Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Monday Morning H-Back

I'm going to keep this short. Merry Christmas. It's been a joy getting to know you guys and you have truly made this one of the most enjoyable parts of my job. You guys rock.

As for the Skins. Hey, they just are not very good. The defense is what it is. They could be on the verge of a 5-11 season, same as the last year of the Ol Ball Coach. That's not progress, folks.

Last place in the NFC East two of the last three years.

1-5 record against the NFC East in 2004; 1-4 record against them this year, with one to play.

3-8 vs. the NFC this season.

Stretches of 2-5 or worse all three seasons.

You can't spin that people.

Alright, hope everyone has an awesome holiday and let's have some fun with the last week of the season. Not much else we can do, eh?

Cheers.

Well, this one was heartbreaking. Even without Marcus, Springs and then even Phillip out for a spell, you would hope that the "d" (little "d" on purpose) could hold a 14 point, 2nd half lead.

Maybe I dreaming, since nearly from the get-go, the Rams were pretty much able to do what they wanted. Jackson is a beast (reminds me of Dickerson and Chuck Muncie with that combo of speed and power). Bruce played like his Pro Bowl days and Bulger proved again why he is a Pro Bowl regular.

Sean missed a lot of tackles, but then did the "d" as a whole. It is pretty obvious that Sean is try to play 2-3 positions at once and overcompensating, since he has had little help in the secondary all season. It also does not help that "g" Williams insists on running a 2-deep "d" in nearly every situation, thereby leaving the deep middle open, where the "d" has been shredded on a constant basis all season.

On the plus side, the O-Line keeps kicking butt and Betts is the real deal. I am certainly not one to pile on him because of the fumble. That was just a great play by O.J. Over 1,000 yards in just 8 starts and 5 straight 100 yard games shows the Skins were smart to sign Betts to a long-term deal, especially seeing that who knows if Portis will be at 100% next year.

Also, I see that some writers at both papers are piling on Jason. For God's sake, this kid was thrown to the wolves in the middle a lost season and all he has done is throw a TD pass in each start and has kept the turnovers to a minimum. He is farther along at this point then Eli was and Eli still plays like a rookie too often. So people should lay off him. He is going to be a fine QB.

Also, with Sweet Suisham, maybe, just maybe, the Skins have found a long-term kicker. He is showing that he is both accurate and can be clutch. He just needs to be a little more consistent on kickoffs.

Merry Christmas, everyone! Outside of a Skins Super Bowl trophy, I hope you got everything you wished for this holiday season.

Merry KwanChrisnukah Jason and Everyone! Can't say I feel very merry this morning, though.

Although we lost, we came close to winning....should have won that games...as well as a few others. Which leads me...an eternal pessimist when it comes to my Skins...as hopeful. I do not think we are as bad as you state, Jason. We need to fix the defense yes but it's not like we are the Raiders (and they have a good defense but keep losing).

I agree with you, NosferatusCoffin, leave Jason Campbell alone. The kid has been poised and he has played much better in his six games than a lot of first year QBs - according to an article I read the other day, he has played better than Peyton Manning did his first 6 games.

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 9:07 AM

We suck. Flat out suck.

We have no defense. We have absolutely no depth. We have no draft picks. We have no cap room, which is probably a good thing. The coaching and play calling is a clusterfart. Although yesterday was a good day, we have way too many penalties. We don't create turnovers. We have too many coaches.

It's mass confusion... but guess what? Nothing is going to change. Gibbs actually thinks that what he's doing is the "right way to go about it UP HERE". There is no accountability. It's just sad to see one of the most storied franchises in the NFL sink to this point. We are back to Steve Spurrier days and I just don't see it getting better anytime soon.

As far as Campbell goes, I agree to leave him alone. In fact, if Gibbs decides to either give Brunell another shot next year OR he goes out and gets a veteran QB to start over him, I may seriously have a stroke. I hate to say this, but you can just tell that this is what Gibby is thinking. You can read that dude like a book.

In any case, enough venting on Christmas Day. It truly is just a game, so I hope everyone has a great Christmas!

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | December 25, 2006 9:27 AM

Ricky Bobby hit the nail on the head. Somehow there will be some cap room made and then every free agent cornerback will be become very rich.

Posted by: Sect 428 | December 25, 2006 10:40 AM

Jeez Jason how about a little Chrismtas cheer. I am back in the DC area for the holidays and was out at the mall and the grocery store yesterday before the game. I was shocked to see how many people were walking around in skins garb. The fans are still on board and for that I am proud of Redskins nation.

Being in Seattle for the last two years I have seen how a city can abandon its team when the don't play well. Sure you see their 12th man on TV and think that must be a great football town but they are not, they had trouble selling out their home playoff game two years ago against the Rams to the point where the Thursday before the game they were talking blackout. Could you imagine?

You are right some things are clear, the defense is in trouble. Campbell is clearly the right man for the job in the future. There is going to be a big push for Nate Clements, if you don't believe that you are kidding yourself. Sean Springs is made out of paper mache, does anybody get hurt more?

One last piece of food for thought: where would we be if we still had Champs and Ladell was the starter for the last three years????

Posted by: PSUAsh | December 25, 2006 10:51 AM

jason, thank you for your candor! but you probly p-ed off some fans. they probly think they're gonna win the SB next year. and that's exactly what snyder and gibbs wants them to think.

nfl isn't the nba where you can win without a "bench" with just your starting 5. you have to have depth. and you can't have depth without draftpicks.

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 11:25 AM

and Merry X-Mas to all! and go iggles! can't wait for that game!

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 11:25 AM

OMG! James Brown is Dead!

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 11:28 AM

Merry Christmas to all. I received an early present from Ladell Betts yesterday but it was not just me it was the wakeup call that all of Skins' Nation received at around the 2 minute warning in the 4th quarter yesterday that should end the Portis Vs Betts debate. I love Portis, there is no one tougher than him and when the game is on the line, there is no one on this team who is more surehanded. From my account, CP's fumbles and they are rare have only cost us one game in three years, really 2 and a half. His blocking is solid and he always gives 110%. Betts also gives 110% but his mistakes in blocking and his fumbles have cost the Skins more than a handful of games in his career in DC. I am not saying that we should get rid of Betts, far from it. But this team needs CP and he is one of the leaders simply because when the game is one the line, he doesn't cough up the ball. Betts' game yesterday was great but I subscribe to the theory that one "oh sh@t cancels out 5 "at-a-boys" and his fumble cost us a game that our defense had no business winning. CP is the man on this team. Betts is the fill in who can take some of the pressure off during the game. Anyone who thinks that Betts is better than CP has already erased the fumble yesterday from their mind. Betts fumbles or screws up in blocking at serious times. I like Betts in the role he had before CP broke his hand. I do not like Betts as a permanent replacement for CP. The Christmas gift Betts gave all Redskins fans yesterday was the moment of clarity that Portis is the starter and finisher for this team.

Other notes: Yesterday was the final answer on whether you need great starters for defense at the expense of depth. The Skins pay way too much money for front line talent in a game of contact and injuries at the expense of decent backup talent. The guys who replace the starters when they get hurt should not even be on the field. The hallmark of the Skins back in the 80's was their backup talent. They could plug a guy into their defense and he could perform. This year the dropoff was not slight, it was more like an abyss. There is a team today that operates like the Skins did back in the 80's and early 90's and it's the Patriots. They are this decade's version of the 80's Skins. Not that flashy but consistent. They too have had a ton of injuries on the defensive side of the ball this year but you wouldn't know it. Why? Because they don't overspend for front line players and leave nothing behind them. If the Skins are going to move forward they have to correct this practice. I am not looking for that big signing in the first day. What I am looking for is several pickups in the off-season that are not going to make headlines. These pickups are usually the ones that get you into the playoffs.

Despite the record this year, I have to agree with Coach Joe about this team and that is that these guys never give up. The thing that made me sick about the Spurrier years was that the Skins routinely phoned in their performances at the end of the year. These guys are playing their tails off and while the tackling needs a complete overhaul, you can't fault the effort. As an earlier post said, the fans still are wearing their garb and are still bought in and that is because despite the results on the field, the fans can see that this team is still playing their tails off.

Posted by: Joparks | December 25, 2006 11:50 AM

One glaring flaw of JC, and I can't believe the coaches haven't corrected it...

On screen passes, JC back-pedals instead of doing his normal drop. Every other pass is a sideways drop. If I can read this, you know opposing defenses can.

How about disguising this a little more with a normal drop?

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | December 25, 2006 11:54 AM

whatever. springs doesn't get hurt, jimoh doesn't play, skins win. i'm gonna buy all of y'all helmets, and we'll be the skins next year. merry christmas redskins faithful.

Posted by: tampadave | December 25, 2006 12:04 PM

Again, the negativity on here on Christmas Day is not "merry" - true we lost and the defense looked abysmal after Springs went out...but despite that fact if Betts had not fumbled the ball we would have WON (I'm not saying the loss was Betts fault) and everyone would be singing a different tune.

We do have character guys who play hard to the end....you gotta give them that. The really sad thing is that every team in the NFC East is going to make it to the playoffs except for us....even the lousy Giants - who will beat us as well.

Happy All of the Holidays to You All!
I can only echo what Jason said about getting to know you guys. This truly is a special place and I look forward to reading your comments every day.
I'm here at work; it's very quiet. We're having a buffet soon. Still no "Talladega Nights."

Merry Christmas, Cindy! Do you ever get a day off?

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 12:51 PM

Merry Christmas everyone! I have leftover duck cassoulet, but absolutely no booze. We ran through my entire wine collection in 3 hours, then finished off my secret stash of Dom Perignon, including all of my 1998s and my beloved 1995s. We then kidnapped the tacky Santa Claus in my condo lobby and hit what feels like every bar in town with him.

I left out a glass of soy milk and a plate full of Russian Tea Cookies for Santa. Big guy ate them all and left me a McDonald's Gift Card. Santa hates me.

God bless you all, and may your Christmas be significantly less hungover than mine.

And Cindy, I'm sad that you have to work today.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 12:53 PM

God Bless James Brown. Thank you, old man, for many of my favorite tunes.

Get up! (get on up!)

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 12:56 PM

Hey, guys!
It's not so bad working; the cafeteria cooked us a lovely dinner last night and tonight is the staff potluck.
What can I say? Working Xmas is part of the NFL gig, so I don't mind terribly.
I can't believe the Godfather of Soul has moved on...My pal Hank Winnicki, of Newsday sports, was pulled up on stage to dance with him at a concert. This has to be hitting him hard.
Soon, there'll be some hoops. Oh, and there's some Redskins and NFL copy to edit -- Jason has a nice piece on Reed Doughty and Les has written about The Worst Trade Ever.

>>> "Being in Seattle for the last two years I have seen how a city can abandon its team when the don't play well."

I've been here 10 years. Back when the Mariners were good (uh, 10 years ago), they came up with a term for all the fans who suddenly showed up: "Johnny Come Lattes".

Seattle is not by any means a sports town. People here would rather wear their fleece and pretend to care. The constant whining after last year's Super Bowl made me lose what little respect I ever had for them.

DC, on the other had, lives and breathes its 'Skins football, its high school and college basketball, and (with its government-based transient European and Latino population) soccer. Combine the accessibility and passion for sports with amazing (mostly free) cultural attractions and killer restaurants, and DC is a pretty darn good town overall.

But your weather and traffic stink.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 1:08 PM

Merry Chrishanwanzaasolistice everyone.

Yep we lost but then again that's who we are this season. The bright side is we have some solid areas to build on like Soups and Oline and a running game and WR (not BLloyd) and Cooley and special teams and A Carter coming to life and RockyMac running around. So I'll continue to have Kool-Aid mix in my cupboard.

If you want to feel better read about the Giants in the NY Times today. Talk about roasting and eating your young. Although perhaps if next Saturday goes badly for us the fans should walk out en masse like they did in East Rutherford.

I loved TBoz's column giving the fans credit. He's still gloom and doom but stands up for us - thanks. Maybe the organization will read it and have a 10 second flash of sense.

On a side note not related the NY Times as the year in pictures and the front page of the section has a layout of photos of our guys in Iraq pulling a wounded soldier to safety and treating him. It'll bring tears to your eyes and remind you that there's a real war going on that we have to remember. I'm agnostic at best but god bless our guys over there and I hope they have a safe day today even though it won't be peaceful.

Now happiness and joy and love to you all.

Posted by: sfskin | December 25, 2006 1:22 PM

Cindy - Even though I get NYT delivery, I read the WaPo online since it isn't delievered outside the area so I'm doing my part to keep you in a job. : )

Diddy - west coast fans in general aren't very impressive. There's no city here that is a real sports town. They know how to put on the face paint for game days but beyond that it's kinda lame. The most fanaticism is reserved for college football and even they're annoying.
By the way I'm increasingly convinced that you are the real life incarnation of Jay Gatsby. You don't stand at the end of the dock and watch the green light blink do you?

Posted by: sfskin | December 25, 2006 1:28 PM

Funny you mention Gatsby, I read the book once a month without fail. I've always identified with Gatsby more than any other literary character.

To top it all off, I still pine for the only girl I've ever met who could match my eccentricity. She left me in true eccentric fashion: boarding her jet along with her pal (a princess) and setting off for a far-off island to build a non-profit that provides educational opportunities to orphans in under-developed countries. No kidding.

No green light, though.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 1:46 PM

Jason Are we off the hook for the #1 swap with Denver? What are we going to have to give up in draft choices for Duckett?

Posted by: Redskin Chip | December 25, 2006 1:46 PM

First and foremost, Merry Christmas!

Strangely numb about the OT loss to the Rams. You'd think after being so high after the Saints win, I'd be lower today. Maybe it's the holiday, or the resignation we're all feeling about this grim Skins season, but I can't muster up much outrage or dismay. Yeah, deep down I wish we'd won, but oh well.

I hate the Bettsy fumble but can't forgive the defense for the three quarters prior to that, or for the ensuing overtime drive complete with E-Z end zone access. That's an embarassment.

L.Pasquarelli says several Skins vets have already restructured their contracts as the Skins gear up for their annual spending spree. J-La, do you have any news on this front for us? Methinks any vets who restructure are guaranteed to be around next year, narrowing the field for our speculation about potential cuts. But I don't recall having read about any such deals since the Betts re-signing.

Ho, ho, hum.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 2:04 PM

Nate,

I wish I could feel numb about the loss but I simply cannot. All the sports channels keep showing Betts fumbling the ball on the 30 yard line and I keep hoping that he does not drop it....so close and yet so far! It stings.....then they keep showing Steven Jackson running right by the Reaper to a TD and then doing that hula dance...

If the fans here in DC are this bad, I can only imagine how bad it is in NY.

Thank God the Wizards have been on fire!!!!

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 2:19 PM

Because it's all that we have as 'Skins fans, here's Mel Kiper's big board:
http://insider.espn.go.com/ncf/insider/columns/story?columnist=kiper_jr_mel&id=2703656

I'm pulling for Quinn Pitcock to be in the burgundy and gold next year. Maybe we can draft Fitzwilliam Darcy and Eppie Cass on the second day.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 2:22 PM

Nate - I'm feeling the same way. The game took me on the usual emotional roller coaster when we appear to be competing and then ah well.

I'm officially again jumping on the Saints bandwagon for the post season. I know that their success is a double edged sword for NOLA in that it keeps focus and gives the citizens of the city hope but also may cover up the fact that it's still so f'ed up. But I'm hoping if they go far then maybe some name brand talking heads will put the focus back on the city.

Posted by: sfskin | December 25, 2006 2:24 PM

P - if we get Fitzwilliam then we won't have to pay him a big contract afterall he gets 10,000 a year and has the big house Pemberly.

Posted by: Anonymous | December 25, 2006 2:29 PM

Whoever just posted a message to me without your name, you must be crazy! I will never desert my team!

sfskin, I'm pulling for the Saints as well...would love to see a Chargers/Saints Super Bowl with the Saints winning. However, I'm beginning to think the Ravens will go to the SB from the AFC and that does not make me happy.

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 2:33 PM

True enough, sfskin. His motivation is probably lacking and we'd end up with another country club player who counts his money instead of making tackles. Maybe we should settle for Nick Carraway.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 2:36 PM

So I'm wandering around the condo and have discovered that everything is cleaned and properly put away. Even my laundry is done!

Either I'm the victim of another dastardly drive-by elfing, or I was much more intoxicated than I believed last night.

Hmmmm...

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 2:39 PM

The Ravens do look good but I'm not sure they can pull it off in the post season. They've been under the radar most of the season and so I'm not sure the spotlight will be kind.

Saints-Chargers that would be a good SB - two good teams with great players and decent people. High powered offenses and I think the football fan population would be split pretty evenly and the non fans will be looking for the storybook ending. I like it.

P - I get very domestic when I've had too much spirit. Mopping for example suddenly becomes a must do activity at 2am.

I'm off to gorge on brunch before rooting for the birds. Catch y'all in during Football Afternoon in America.

Posted by: sfskin | December 25, 2006 2:47 PM

Diddy, you're gonna love this. I turned on CNN this morning and there's a Larry King marathon on. Normally, this is just what Christmas needs. Sadly, I happened to catch the interview with Farrell/Reilly in character as Ricky Bobby and Cal Naughton Jr. "Talladega Nights" continues to mock me.

ohh the reason i didn't watch it sooner was cuz i thought it was a comedy...and for some stupid reason i thought it was mathew perry with bruce willis...and ben kingsley...i love you man! morgan freeman being morgan freeman. and lucy liu showed a side that i hadn't seen before. she was awesome...i thought. made the movie...i think all you littery geniuses call that a comic relief...

Watching McIntosh at line backer yesterday showed me just how bad our line backing staff is.He played the possition like it should be played and I dont understand what they are waiting for with this kid. I know we need cornerbacks bad but the safeties are having to make all the tackles and It hurts them on coverage because our starting linebackers are so bad.

Happy Holidays! The war on Christmas rages on. Sitting here watching A Christmas Story. Flick just licked the pole! Honestly, best movie ever.

Wow, that was bad yesterday. They pretty much folded with a 28-14 lead. Me thinks they had no idea what to do with that lead, seems like that hasn't happened this season.

Ricky Bobby, good thing some sucker bought those Giants tickets off you... you made out like a bandit my friend.

Jason, what's offseason going to look like for the blog? Something tells me productivity at certain cubicles around the beltway and beyond will sky rocket.

Posted by: Dorf | December 25, 2006 4:26 PM

Eh, Watching Reaper trying to backpedal to catch the Rams RB and looking like a short bus rider has to be an all time low for me as a Redskins fan. And the Betts fumble was as bad as Steven Davis fumbling on the 1 yard line againt the Cardinals and wathcing it go the other way for 7. The Skins d is so powerless, so sterile, that it just demoralizes the fan.

The fact that any hope of winning seems so far away makes the futlity seem even more real. What the "F" did the stinkin Ravens do to deserve to be 12-3?

That is the question I want to scream from the roof tops of Connecticut Ave (or even in Dannyland-Potomac MD). How do we make wholesale changes and get a nasty, satisfying defense that wreaks havoc, scores, sacks people, gets interceptions (Like the Ravens)? How do they afford it? Why didn't we taget Ed Reed for all that Archu-dough or Ray Lewis or somebody who makes hits and plays? How do we apply for a heart and soul set of players like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. I don't care much for Ray Lewis as a person, but he's a helluva football player and does not put up with a losing mentality.

Bah bag it all *((^%&*@!! I want the Redskins to win and have good players...I mean it!

still...give props to parcells for going for it there. Gibbs, even at 5-10 next week in that situation, will kick the field goal.

Posted by: 4-12 | December 25, 2006 5:47 PM

smack, i'll take visine over anything...cuz this is the second girls game i'm watching and i can't find any alleged probowlers on that team...

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 5:47 PM

and you guys probly hate the fact that stephen jackson, the guy your peeps passed up for barber(?) torched us for 175 yards...what were they thinking? seriously when are these two owners going to realize that this shtuff isn't working. it's as if these teams are their own personal toys....hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 5:50 PM

We're wearing down their offense.

Posted by: SMACK | December 25, 2006 5:51 PM

replace "us" with skins

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 5:51 PM

I believe we ended up with Julius instead of Stephen. Not a great decision, but Julius isn't horrible.

Posted by: SMACK | December 25, 2006 5:52 PM

18 to 8 in TOP...i think they're doing a good job of it...

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 5:52 PM

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 6:00 PM

excuse me...i'll be back in the second half...
diddy, you awake yet?

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 6:02 PM

It was Carrie Underwood, altho I have no idea who she is. She might be the second future ex-Mrs. Diddy.
:)
This game is boring me.

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 25, 2006 6:06 PM

It appears that Tony Romo is dating (or wants to date) Carrie Underwood.....

That's a definite step up from Jessica Simpson.

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 6:07 PM

Cowboys are going to win this game off of Eagles penalties...

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 6:12 PM

God, I wish I was Tony Romo. Carrie Underwood? Lucky dude.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 25, 2006 6:20 PM

This game is making me wish for Jets-Fish.

Cindy, Carrie Underwood won American Idol two seasons ago.....she is a really sweet girl with a very nice voice...but a country singer. She has won several music awards as well.

P Diddy, I've been having trouble with itunes all day.

Okay is there anything better than brunch? I think not especially with champagne and like 10 tables stacked with food.

Okay it may be too soon but I can't help it.

I know all the crap said about Garcia so hey Cowpukes here's a little song for you:

Don't you wish your QB was hot like me?
Don't you wish your QB was good like me?
Don't you? Don't you?

Woo Eagles!

Posted by: sfskin | December 25, 2006 7:38 PM

love it sfskin!

smack, sorry dude...got a little tied up but didn't miss a snap...also thought it wouldn't 've been right to trash talk since the iggles aren't really my team.

any questions "to" is soooooooo gone after this year? who'll take him that's the question...

diddy, you crazy fool...she's okay. she looked like she was 4 ft. something standing next to romo...

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 7:54 PM

ohh and smack, my rainbow warrior actually won the game for 'em! but was impressed with romo man...he looks good, real good. but with "to" and fatso...no way...no way jose :)

I'm not quite so worried about the Cowboys going to the SB now.....

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 8:06 PM

Smack - you've been a gentleman on the blog so I extend my apologies on your loss. It's galling - we here at the bottom of the NFC East feel it all the time.

Also how sad and lame that I'm actually excited when the birds win? Skins right blow chunder so I'm clinging to other things I admit it.

I'll tell you what though if Soups and COTS keep it up I think we might some humdinger games in the next few years between Paddies and Skins.

TO - what a loser! He is not a great receiver anymore sorry. He isn't even particularly good. Go away loser.

Posted by: sfskin | December 25, 2006 8:14 PM

SMACK: as you said, GARCIA! I think you'd be better off with him than w/ 2-int per game romo. what does that stand for anyway? Ruined Our MOmentum? good luck in the playoffs. if it's one and done you'll see the countup show up again(nate, don't wory b/c no way these guys win it this year).

agree da reap had a bad game, also agree that he seems to be overcompensating, but that last play was on LM. looked like he overshot his gap responsibility and da reap was the only one w/ skills to react and pursue.

hoping we close this one out on a high note . . .

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 25, 2006 8:18 PM

Yeah, any playoff appearance is not gonna be pretty. Thanks for the consolation sfskin and dealer. You all are okay. But I guess it's better than no playoffs at all. So is this that amazing AFC I've been hearing so much about? This game is weak.

Posted by: SMACK | December 25, 2006 9:06 PM

smack, yep nfc will win the SB this year for shure...and i picked the iggles and i'm sticking with 'em. really it looks like their year. everything is falling in place.

JJ and Andy Reid deserve a SB especially JJ. and they would've won it against the pats had it not been for mcnaab.

it's just amazing that they've never won a SB in their history(?)...

watching "elf"...ehh

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 9:29 PM

btw that 2 minute drill the iggles ran with 36 seconds left was a thing of beauty...someone on 980 suggested the skins should hire another assistant coach to be a clock manager at the end of half(s).

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 9:31 PM

You have to respect the Eagles as an organization really. McNabb goes down, and they have an answer. We only love Romo so much because he keeps Bledsoe on the bench. Romo might be okay, if we could block, cover, tackle. I think you know what I mean.

Posted by: SMACK | December 25, 2006 9:36 PM

Elf could have been really great but I think they were trying to keep it to a PG rating right?

Posted by: SMACK | December 25, 2006 9:40 PM

Dudes, so happy somebody is hanging around up here. Merry waning-hours-of-Xmas.

Had a great day with the wife and two-year-old. Terrific weekend overall. Not even as rainy as we feared, our first Xmas in the Pacific Northwest. Apparently we sent the rain east to DC according to the family over there.

Hoo rah ray for the Iggles. And for Elf.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 9:47 PM

I want Jason Taylor to play for us!!

Is anyone going to score in this game?

By the way, can any of you who have played football tell me why the players keep undoing their helmet straps after every play?

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 9:54 PM

Not watching MNF is it worth it?

What I am doing is sitting here giggling like a school girl cause my sis got me surround sound for my TV and well my jaw is dropped my ears are perked and I don't know what to do with myself.

Now I need to win the lotto so I can get the plasma TV.

Posted by: sfskin | December 25, 2006 9:58 PM

lisa, i've never played but just imagine yourself in a helmet and a tight strap under your chin, sweating, wanting to talk...wouldn't you want to unstrap? i would even if i didn't have to talk.

i wonder what gibbs will say after the iggles win it all...will he say "we're lot like them"?

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 9:58 PM

VERY happy about the Iggles win tonight, unabashedly so.

I have a weird relationship with the Iggles. They are my second-favorite NFC team, sort of like a kid brother; sometimes I hate them, and I always want the Skins to beat them badly, but I usually feel okay with them doing well.

(I realize these sentiments are anathema to a lot of die-hards, but please bear with me. And remember I'm talking about the football team, not their generally repugnant fans.)

If the Skins are doomed not to be NFC East winners, I greatly prefer the Iggles over the other two as division champs. One more win and they have it. Nicely done.

I like McNabb, and I like something about Reid as well, and usually like watching their D when they're rocking. And you can only envy their success the past six or seven years as compared to, um, ours.

And I've got to say, every time I think I've found a second NFC team to pay attention to when the Skins are eliminated, I get let down. Nobody seems worthy of even 'situational allegiance.' For what other NFC team are you going to root wholeheartedly? Sure, this year America is rooting for the Saints, but I think that will pass. A lot of people like Favre qua Favre, but I'm not a big fan of Mr. Interception these days. It's definitely not the whining Seahawks, and I'm not convinced about the Bears.

I for one will be happy to pull for the Iggles as they tote the NFC East banner in this year's playoffs.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 10:04 PM

sfskin, aren't you teacher? don't teachers make the big bucks? (that would just make too much sense i guess) also if you go to costco you can get a 42 inch philips plasma for a grand. or a 32/37 inch for 600.

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 10:08 PM

Lisa, I am disqualified from answering your chinstrap question since my only marginally relative experience was a season of freshman football, as a five-foot-tall twelve-year old. I think I was on the field for two snaps all season. But I have to think dealer has it right, that it really is about getting a moment of comfort between plays. Remember, those helmets are super tight now, for maximum protection.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 10:09 PM

sfskin, what are you watching in brilliant surround sound, if not MNF?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 10:10 PM

Thanks, guys for your "insight" into my helmet question.....I was just curious because I notice the players do this alot and then they have to strap it right back!

Nate, I can't agree with you about the Eagles going to the Super Bowl - can't stand any of our division opponents. I was glad the Eagles won tonight because I hate the Cowboys more...and I really wanted Garcia to hand it to TO. The Eagles fans are so evil that it is difficult to root for them. In fact, some Eagles fans came down to DC for the Eagles/Skins game and beat up a Skins fan -pushed him down and he got run over by a car - is probably still in the hospital.

However, I do like McNabb - he called Jason Campbell to encourage him after he was named starter....gotta admire that. And Andy Reid is a good guy. However, he appears to be headed for a heart attack unless he gets his weight under control....just my opinion.

Posted by: Lisa | December 25, 2006 10:20 PM

if the giants beat the skins this saturday(will mean ATL has nothing to play for on sunday thus will laydown like dead dogs against the iggles) iggles will win the division.

so smack you gotta cheer for the skins once again this season.

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 10:22 PM

Lisa, I think most people up here would agree with your feelings on the Iggles. I know it verges on heresy, but again I just can't find the hate for them that a lot of Skins fans have.

8k & others, thanks for the reminder that I can now come in off the 'Dallas threatens deep playoff run' ledge. Their Saints and Iggles games have proven they could very well be one and done, which would be absolutely great.

Focusing on a Skins victory Saturday night. A Skins win plus any one of the other 7-8 teams (Rams, Packers, Panthers, Falcons) winning means the Jints keep their dysfunctional butts home in Jersey this playoff season. Though I don't know whether 6-10 would feel significantly better than 5-11. Ugh, did I really just write that? How abysmal this season has been.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 10:38 PM

lisa, i know what you mean. they're vicious. i went to the skins last game at the vet last year. rude people.[awesome stadium btw. was sitting all the way at the top and didn't miss a single play could actually see the ball.]

but JJ has done such a good job over the years. Monte Kifin got one and JJ's gonna get his this year. i like mcnaab personally, classy dude, but the past 3-4 years he's put on so much weight and skips passes way too often and choked in the big game.

i just don't think NO can hang with AFC's elite. it's the iggles and iggles only. JJ will make any QB look bad any given sunday. and they're good at creating turnovers. and if the team only has one offensive weapon he knows how to shut it down (LT, peyton, brady) he made tom brady look awfully ordinary in the SB that year.

let's see what they do.

bears: don't have an identity on the offense,
saints: lost to the skins @ home.
seattle: they lost to the cardinals and just look at their record
dallas: jerry jones' to, parcells defense lost two big games at home.
team X: look at their record...

afc
san diego: marty. and p. rivers is getting on my nerves...i thought he was a cool cat...dude! it's LT's team!
broncos: rookie QB
new england: only team that can win a big game. might make it to the SB...not cuz of themselves but others' inability to win a big game.
baltimore: i haven't seen them play...but from the highlights it seems like this is a complete team. mcnair's health.

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 10:42 PM

dealer, looks like you forgot the Colts... do you think their glaring weakness is the D, Dungy, potential coach-killah BBM or something else?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 10:57 PM

whoa, the Jets-Fins game is a thrilling 3-0 late in the third quarter. is anyone outside of South Florida and North Jersey watching this game?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 11:01 PM

nate, i don't know. funny thing 'bout this season is that the coach killer can finally point to the D and say i thoght dungy was suppose to be a D specialist...but their O hasnt been all that good neither

jets lose? be really cool to see vince young beat him in the po this year
cant type

Posted by: dealer | December 25, 2006 11:09 PM

I'm sorry, Cleo Lemon? That sounds like a cartoon character. This guy is playing QB in the NFL? Wow. Happy times in Miami.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 25, 2006 11:20 PM

I thought it was Jack Lemmon. But then I remembered that would be impossible. Jack Lemmon doesn't have a good enough arm to play in the NFL. And he's dead, too.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 1:22 AM

Great story on Reed Doughty, by the way. Good job, JLaC.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 1:40 AM

Okay just watched 3 movies in a row because I couldn't get enough of surround sound.

I just had my bank account raped for automotive stuff so no Costco deals for me. Maybe in a few months.

I want to stick it to the Giants because even though I think Coughlin is an NFL assistant HC at best I think the team has transformed itself into a bunch of prima donnas. It'd be nice to be their season killer. Plus I'm just spiteful right now.

If I were St. Joe I'd walk into practice tomorrow and tell the guys they're playing for their jobs and that no one is exempt. I bet they'll believe it if they see what's happened to Archie O'verpaid.

Hey where do you guys suppose our FRIEND IS HIDING RIGHT NOW? Under a tumbleweed?

Posted by: sfskin | December 26, 2006 2:37 AM

The Good:

Dallas may not win the East. I hate Philly just as much so normally this wouldn't make me feel better but making fun of Boofer will be fun.

The Bad:

The Redskins.

The Verdict:

Soup has a stellar, just stellar offensive line the last couple of weeks. Not only in protection but in the running game. He needs to start doing better. Period. Kid or not.

Next year if Soup isn't a franchise QB this team needs to be blown up, really. It doesn't play good Defense, the passing game is bad and it's the most expensive team in football.

I walked into a bar in Manhatten and asked for a TV to be changed to the Redskins game and everyone started laughing at me. Not just NFC East people. Football people, all of them.

Hey Gang -
Just wanted to wish everyone a belated Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. Jason, you rock - keep the great material coming.
At least the Skins can play spoiler Saturday night and we can all go home with a sweet taste in our mouths for the new year.
Best,

Whew! What a holiday! Had a mad rush on electronic burgundy and gold clad Santa's who ho ho hoed their guts out...the elves put on a great 2-minute drill and really jollied their guts out and and I made quite a nice bundle on the parking concession at several area churches.

So, did I missed anything? How'd the team do?

Posted by: CrazyDanny'sEmporium | December 26, 2006 9:19 AM

I've been listening to Sports Talk 980 this morning and it just makes me angry - and that horrible Steve Czaban is not even on yet. First Doc Walker (who I really like) was talking about all the talent we have on the team especially the O line but keep losing. Although he did mention we have no depth. The next set of guys are saying that we have no talent (what have they been watching?) and should blow it up and start from scratch. Talk about inconsistency among radio guys.

Posted by: Lisa | December 26, 2006 9:24 AM

Also, I wonder just how much this last guy on 980 knows as he mentioned we have a lot of guys with contracts up.....who besides Dockery? I have not heard of any....certainly not LOTS of them.

Posted by: Lisa | December 26, 2006 9:28 AM

Skinz, never forget that feeling. Carry it with you like a backpack for the rest of your days. I have mine. Its a little ball of shame I call 'Prometheus'. One day, at our Super Bowl Parade, I shall load Prometheus into a rocket and shoot him at the monument to a fictional character in philadelphia.

Nate, me and you should go outside and have some words. Not angry words, just focused discussion away from prying eyes. I want to present you with all the reasons why philly sucks and why you should hate them. We should really take note as that is who we are becoming. We're turning into Philly. We expect to lose now and the cloud of negativity and hate that hangs over that discussing new jersey/pa cesspool is slowly making its way down 95.

I will hold the door for Grilliams on his way out of town. Smell you later.

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | December 26, 2006 9:42 AM

I've watched the skins for the last few weeks and kept my mouth shut. Especially after reading the hopeful staff articles about the defense.

All season I've been dissapointed by the linebacker play. McIntosh looked good for a rookie (even though after sitting on the bench all year he almost forgot to come into the game on a 4th down play).

Several postings have hit the problem on the head. No depth behind the starters. Once Springs went down you could see the downhill slide start and losing Daniels was the absolute end of the line.

The offense puts up 31 points and the defense has to allow the most yards in the last three years to ensure the loss - but they played their guts out to get it done.

Taylor had one of the worst games I've seen him play. Archuleta certainly couldn't have been any worse (and may haved tackled better).

Why is Williams waiting for next year to study the problem of getting beat in the deep middle? That problem has been evident ever since the first game against Minnesota. Williams and his henchmen made Archuleta the whipping boy for their failings and that is coming back to haunt them. He was not the problem - it's the system stupid!

Looking at Archuleta's stats - he was giving us just what he gave St. Louis for the previous 5 years. He never was a great pass defender and never averaged more than one interception per year. He was a good tackler and was going at a rate to be close to the team lead this year until they benched him. They basically signed a slower, older version of Taylor instead of somebody who could compliment what they already had. If Williams and his henchmen provided the input for that decision instead of keeping what we had then they deserve to be gone.

Joe looked and sounded discouraged after the game. I really miss the local skins coverage living in NC. It was nice to be visiting my kids for Christmas and be able to see how he looks and sounds after a game like that again. On the down side I have to use my daughter's laptop to get on this blog and I'm really struggling with the keyboard on this machine. D*** things are way too small for someone with large hands and long fingers. Please excuse any typos.

That said I think that the skins can beat the Giants this week - we really owe them a pasting and their defense looks as bad as ours. Game should boil down to who wants it more. Maybe Williams should start Doughty at safety - he couldn't do any worse than what were playing now. On second thought; move Vincent to corner and start both Archuleta and Doughty.

Unfortunately, I'll be back in NC and watching on the good old NFL Channel. No good pregame or postgame shows.

Happy Holidays to all - keep this blog going it has been great this year.

Posted by: Oldskinsfan | December 26, 2006 9:48 AM

AM, Don't worry I have my rage, it's been building for years. Last year it dissapated a bit but sitting in that bar having to listen to Ravens, Bengals and Bears fans talk junk it all came back.

I really don't mind the people jawing to me. The only thing that bothers me is that it's all true. That's the worst part. So you really can't say much back. The only good part was there was a Cardinal fan there. He didn't say a word.

Posted by: Skinz | December 26, 2006 9:56 AM

Cindy and JLC, if you guys see Les Carpenter today, please pass along a high five-follow through-to buttocks slap for his article today. That story should be talked about every day.

This is reason # 1,349 why I hate the SI sportswriters. Think about if the Redskins had done this deal, how these guys (King, Dr. Z, Banks) would have KILLED them. But, because that idiot Ernie Accorsi answers all their phone calls and emails, they won't grill him on the worst NFL trade of the last 25 years.

Emanning.com = joeyharrington.net.

Skinz...(nodding slowly and solemly because I know it to be true)

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | December 26, 2006 10:20 AM

We know the defense sucks, but Betts has 2 4th quarter fumbles this year. Portis never fumbled in the 4th quarter. When they say hold the ball with 2 hands, they meant it.

The defense...well why is anyone surprised that they stink?

The Rams double teamed Carter and the other 3 linemen couldn't generate a pass rush.

Daniels and Wynn have to go...time to draft a d-lineman.

This team gets on a high horse after one win, and now they have sunk back down.

BUT, they will beat the Giants because that's one team that has quit on themselves.

Posted by: vman | December 26, 2006 10:37 AM

I haven't seen much tape on the guy, but if he's available, I think this team needs a guy like Alan Branch, from Michigan. He's a stud, and would give us a lot more size on our line. If he's not there, I'm all in favor of trading back, and picking up more draft picks.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | December 26, 2006 10:47 AM

We need Quinn Pitcock. I'll giggle everytime he makes a play.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 11:11 AM

i just read the les carpenter piece "worst trade ever made"...

worst trade ever made

i came out with one question: was AJ smith as stupid as Accorsi in wanting to pick archie's boy's brother or was he a genius by picking him and called the giants' bluff??

if anyone knows/read that AJ Smith didn't want archie's boy's brother before he said "ummm no, thanks" to SD...please let us know...

diddy, i love Quinn Pitcock as well. but with a name like that i doubt he'll be any good...rember "god shamgod"?

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 11:24 AM

i'm sorry God Shamgod shouldn't have been in quotes...

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 11:26 AM

The super tight DE from Clemson (Gaines Adams I think) will be gone. After that, there is a huge dropoff. The Governor and I have given you the answer: Laron Landry.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvKaO78Ov2I

He hunts men.

After that, a steady diet of DL draft picks would be super.

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | December 26, 2006 11:30 AM

one more thing...Hershal(sp) Walker trade, ricky williams trade, and this trade...

only one team has won a SB (3 of them) because of a trade and ya'll know who that was.

and mr. casserly got us chris samuels and lavar arrington, 1 division title, 1 playoff win

the archie's boy's brother tade value(in SB wins) has yet to be determined...rivers' first year starting, merriman was out for 4 games for steroids, they have yet to win a playoff game...

now i want to see the colts play the chargers in the first game! one of the two chokers(marty and archie's boy) will HAVE to win...:))))))))))))))))

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 11:32 AM

Jason,

It's been 20 long weeks, and the time has come for you to own up to the contest you held and give the winner his due. You promised you'd come through before the season is over...well the season is over for the redskins in exactly 5 days.

Wake me up before you go-Joe!

Posted by: Barno | December 26, 2006 11:34 AM

JLC, your story this morning on Reed Doughty was wonderful. Thanks for reminding us what's really important in life, and for putting a real human face on a guy who is out there giving it his all every week, regardless of how the game ends.

Every team should have more Reed Doughtys and less Terrell Owens's.

Posted by: Gack | December 26, 2006 11:53 AM

from the clown's mmqb:
I see the [philladelphia eagles] bubble bursting because of a great game from Tony Romo, and no drops from Terrell Owens. Dallas, 27-17.

Hey gang! Hope Santa was good to you all, since you got a gigantic lump of coal this fall.
Thanks, Art Monk, for the kind words for Les on the trade story. I'll pass them along.
And thanks all for the compliments on Jason's Doughty story. He did a great job with it. Gotta hope that guy sticks with an NFL team, hopefully this one. That is one sweet baby.

AMTTS, it's just one man's opinion. I knew it wouldn't be popular. But I should make it absolutely clear that I'm not becoming an Iggles fan for the playoffs, I'm just admitting that with the Skins out of it, among the NFC offerings I have no shame in being okay with the Iggles' succeeding. They are way behind the Cowboys and Jints on my passionate dislike scale. But I'm solely talking about what happens on the field.

And as far as becoming Philly, I think any of us would trade their recent run of success for our past few years. If you meant we Skins fans are becoming Philly phans -- fatalistic, battery-tossing, Santa-booing hatemongers -- it's never, ever going to happen.

This is going to be a slow week at work. Plenty of time to dream up new and exciting ways to embarrass the Jints on a cool, rainy Saturday night at FedEx. Let me count the ways...

dealer,

That site's a crock. It says Elvis is dead: http://www.deadoraliveinfo.com/dead.nsf/pnames-nf/Presley+Elvis

Say it ain't so!

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 12:15 PM

The beauteous thang about playing the Giants Saturday night is that, really, they don't need any help. They embarrass themselves quite nicely.

Posted by: Jason's editor | December 26, 2006 12:16 PM

Also, I wonder just how much this last guy on 980 knows as he mentioned we have a lot of guys with contracts up.....

lisa, "he no good". i have no idea why they didn't just use/hire jason (of this blog) or howard.

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 12:16 PM

Come to think of it, maybe that site is confusing The King with Elvis Grbac, whose career is, in fact, dead.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 12:17 PM

It says Elvis is dead:

We definitely need a reset from J-La and those in the know, to help sort out who has already restructured or re-signed (aside from Bettsy) and who is still dangling.

Count me among the Reed Doughty fan club. Great story, Jason.

TO has to be the worst teammate in sports history. Its amazing that he blames people for not getting him the ball when he consistantly drops them.

What a joke he has become...

Posted by: BT | December 26, 2006 12:27 PM

AMTTS - I think that there is a slight chance that your DE might still be there. You have to figure that two of the top picks (at least) will be QB's. I think Smith and Quinn are locks as top five. It just depends on where we end up drafting. I agree, though that we need some help on the DL and DB.

Posted by: Anonymous | December 26, 2006 12:33 PM

sorry diddy regarding my response to your very very funny response to my comment. you got me real good.

anyways...i was just thinking that wouldn't it be cool if the girls played the skins on november 5th and that game was won by the skins in humiliating/demoralizing fashion to the girls franchise and we as fans could always use this line to ward off boofers of this world "REMEMBER REMEMBER THE 5TH OF NOVEMBER"...

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 12:52 PM

some idiot on espn show on XXX radio was going on and on about how romo's hype isn't warranted and he's only won 3 games and so on...and he was an iggles fan, who persumably thought that letting "to" go was a franchise destryoing move...and did i mention that this guy was the host of this show?

anyways...as much as i hate the girls...i don't think romo is that bad of a qb. i can see him becoming the next jeff garcia. which is better than the rest of the nfc east...and

skinz, regarding JC i couldn't have put it better. the line is playing ummmmmmazing. and with that running game? i really don't care about his completion percentage (to me in this run and shoot type of offense it doesn't matter how many he completes...and that'll come in time) but his yardage should be a lot higher. and maybe they do need to get him a taller #2. dunno

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 12:59 PM

All I wanted for Christmas was Jessica Simpson and Carrie Underwood. Santa sent them to Tony Romo's house for his Famous Ribs, and gave me a McDonald's Gift Card.

There is no justice in the world.

Oh, and Cowboys suck.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 1:14 PM

Oh, and let me also add that if Tony Romo starts dating Keira Knightley, I'm going to quit my job and become an NFL quarterback. I'll practice audibling in line at Starbucks. If I see two bartenders behind a bar I'll yell "Cover 2" to everyone within earshot. I'll work on managing the elements by standing for hours in the freezer aisle at the Safeway. I'll practice my hook slide at Yoga class. Heck, I'm even willing to practice taking snaps with the girl who gave me her number two nights ago.

Call it the "P Diddy Workout". Adam Archuleta, eat your heart out.

AMTTS:

LL looks like he could fit in . . .

my only concern is that we need some depth in secondary and d-line and a real Mike backer. we may be better off trading down and picking up a few 2nd/3rd round picks. the broncos have found some solid DBs in that range and I think we can as well. . .

also, I know how badly rumph has played, but what round s he drafted in? just curous.

Posted by: skinsfan@8KaboveMSL | December 26, 2006 1:22 PM

Keira Knightley? ehhh she'd have to have a couple of kids for me to think she's alright...if you smeLLLLLLLLLLLLLL what the rock is cookin!

i'm soooooo friggin bored...i can't even find anything on the web to buy...no skins rumors to investigate, no nothing...ahh well it all ends this SATURDAY (thank god! don't have to wait the whole weekend!)...

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 1:27 PM

Oh well. With the Skins going to 5-11 and matching the Ol' Ball coach's last year in DC, it becomes apparent the the Skins have basically run in place (a not very good place) since Saint Joe came back to right the ship. Except that key players are either too old, too fragile, or too overpaid. Problems certainly indicate no immediate solution can be put in place to make the team a consistent winner in the near future. Looks like we needed Bobby Beathard more than we needed Gibbs at this point. Look at how Saint Joe has been outcoached this year and realize that maybe his past success was due more to the excellence of the Redskins front office, not necessarily the coaching. (Or maybe, Gibbs 2 just isn't as good as Gibbs 1). Next year does not look that promising. Better, perhaps, but still a laggard in a field of up and comers.

Posted by: Almazar80 | December 26, 2006 1:31 PM

I stood next to Keira at an event in LA last year. She's positively radiant in person, with the most amazing personality: very bubbly and vivacious, effervescent like a Diet Sprite. Sadly, I'm a bold man, but not bold enough to talk to her. Besides her publicist looks like the Dog Cerebrus and might have tackled me if I were to get within a picture frame of the gorgeous Ms. Knightley.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 1:34 PM

This is definitely the most boring work week of the year. Trying to find a movie to stretch out the lunch break until almost quittin' time. The tiniest shreds of necessary work are getting done, yes, but come on, it's dead in the office.

I found some concert tix to buy, that was something to do. Mose Allison. Good times.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 26, 2006 1:40 PM

No BIG MOUTH BOOFER!!! SWEET!

Said Cowpokes were going to win the division. Looking less likely now.

"Parcells said, adding he told the team the same thing. "There's nothing good to say. We just didn't make any plays at all, either side of the ball. Just awful."

HEE, HEE, HEE.

"We had a couple chances there and just didn't get the job done," Romo said.

Ain't looking like possible SB winners this morning. Sweet as Christmas candy.

Posted by: charlie | December 26, 2006 1:44 PM

Diddy, I know a gentleman doesn't kiss and tell, but do you have any stories where you get the girl? We've only heard about these wistful missed connection/missed opportunity/she got on a plane sort of things. Just hope you aren't as rueful as you could be in the wake of all these attempts which have come up short.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 26, 2006 1:46 PM

Almazar80,

I get so flippin' tired of people saying that Gibbs has been "outcoached" (who came up with that word anyway?) when he has not been calling the plays!!!!! I think he has recently integrated his playcalling with Saunders and there has been definite improvement with the offense. But before that it was all Saunders. And it's not our offense that has been losing us games this year...it's the D (or lack of).

I just hope the guys will muster everything they can to beat the Giants. The Giants are due for a win (since it is rare for teams to lose 4-5 in a row) no matter how badly they have been playing but it will truly suck for us to open the door wide for them to get into the playoffs.

Posted by: Lisa | December 26, 2006 1:50 PM

Lisa, dealer and I touched base separately and agreed to wear official Skins helmets during the Jints game. we have spared no expense, this is the real deal. this comes under the heading of mustering everything we can. we will each post feedback on the chinstrap issue by Sunday morning (Pacific time, in my case).

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 26, 2006 1:57 PM

Several points:

1) I played against God Shammgod in high school. His name was 'Shammgod Wells' at the time. He was named MVP of the Gonzaga DC Classic over at AU. His team beat out Roman Catholic from Philly with star center Larry Ketner. 'God' had a triple double against us in the first half. He actually laughed outloud once when I guarded him. His team, Lasalle Academy from NYC had 5 division 1 players on it. We did not have as many.

2) My boy is one of those 'actors' in LA and he informed me that there are 2 women who you have to see in person to believe how hot they are: 1) Jessica Biel 2) Keira Knightly-AMTTS (We are going with the joint name).

3) Nate, I hear you. In fact, because they have never won a single superbowl, philly is 3rd on my most hated depth chart. But, I think as human beings, we owe it to the rest of humanity to never root for philly. Further, we should never be OK with their success. I read somewhere on the internet, that for every philly 1st down, 1,000 kids run away from home. Do you want that on your conscience? I don't.

What I meant by us becoming philly is that they lose. You know they are going to lose. They know it too. No matter what. We've been losing too my friend. The memories of wins trickle further to the back of my brain with each passing season of discontent. We're never going to throw batteries but we can become a losing culture. We can be like Red Sox fans and have eternal hope doing a tango with crushing pessimism from being scorned and lied to; by being teased and tormented by promises of brighter days.

Laron Landry will be a star on Sundays.

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | December 26, 2006 1:58 PM

Lisa,

Gibbs may not call all the plays, he has the power to call timeouts and such. The clock management on this team has been abyssmal all year. Besides, if you hand off responsibility to your subordinates, you need to make those guys perform. Which really has not happened this year. Besides, most of the team has been selected by Gibbs and as such he bears a certain responsibility for the performane (or lack thereof) that he has been able to get from them.

Posted by: Almazar80 | December 26, 2006 1:58 PM

Come on, AMTTS, it's spelled LaRon. You're his promoter, so get it straight. Heh heh. For the record, I would be very happy if we drafted this young man, despite his inherently evil surname.

Cornerback, D-line, O-line, safety and linebacker are my top concerns for the offseason, in order. And adding DEPTH in general is a concern, seeking that blend of quality and quantity which has evaded us of late. Not looking for any coaching changes except the dismissal of one of the superfluous secondary coaches.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 26, 2006 2:13 PM

Nate & Dealer, thank you very much for your upcoming "mustering" on Saturday night....we really need it :-)

Posted by: Lisa | December 26, 2006 2:16 PM

Rooting for Philly (or any NFC East Team for that matter) is like taking your best friend's girlfriend out for a steak dinner and then never calling her again: You just don't do it.

If we can't get a great DE or DL, then I agree L-squared hurts peoples feelins' and would be a good addition to our squad.

AM, I have seen Mrs. Skinz (you may know her as Jessica Alba.) You want to add her to the must-see list. I would have talked to her, I swear, but I tripped on my lower-lip and hid in shame screaming "Look away I'm hideous." I was intimidated, think Todd Pinkston going over the middle with the Reaper intimidated.

Yeah she's that hot.

Posted by: Skinz | December 26, 2006 2:21 PM

diddy, found out what slingbox is:
slingbox

i really don't care how good laron or sharon's gonna be...they need to clean up upstairs first before this team is any good.

amtts, i was taught that if the skins don't make it then hate on the girls. then root for the nfc east teams(besides the girls) to do well and in the SB to root for the NFC.

also it's personal how you rank the hatred in my view...i actually can't stand the giants fans around me more than the girls fans. the girls fans are mostly uneducated and low income people so...i've never met an iggles fan outside philly...i don't know why...so i feel no hatred towards them other than a divisional rival...but the people who i don't like like the giants...and they're soooooooooooooooooooooooo annoying. unlike the girls fans i know.

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 2:26 PM

All right, I have been officially voted down, by acclamation no less, and will hereafter shelve all discussion of throwing even one iota of 'support' towards the Iggles.

I will join most of you on the Saints-Chargers SB bandwagon. And I will try to cheer enthusiastically for Favre if he makes the big dance one last time (whoopee).

Having been thus rebuked, I will now trudge off into the driving Portland rain to catch a matinee. Happy Boxing Day/Feast of Stephen, y'all.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | December 26, 2006 2:33 PM

Uneducated and low income! That's great stuff. I feel like the Geico caveman here.

Posted by: SMACK | December 26, 2006 2:38 PM

okay nate.

dudes & lisa,
ummm the slingbox only costs $150????WOW! you mean i can travel anywhere, anytime during the season?! woohoo i'm free!

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 2:38 PM

smack, not all the girls fans are like that i just happened to be surrounded by these unfortunate(cuz they're cows fans) people...

oooooooohhhh new post!

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 2:45 PM

I am not a strong speller...I do know this: I think the only person on this blog with enough sand in his barrells to capitalize the 3rd letter of his first name is JM220 aka 'Shang-Tsung the Soul Stealer'...and he doesn't even do it. LaRon is just so nasty.

Skinz, that list was of ladies that were way hotter in person than you would otherwise think. I would expect Jessica Alba-Skinz to be 'nucular' (W voice there) in person. This was more like, 'yeah, Biel and Knightly-AMTTS are hot, but they are extraordinary in person'.

Lisa, sorry to be awkward. I know that's annoying when dudes talk about how other chicks are hot. When girls do it, I'm like: 'great point...so are we gonna make this happen or what?'

Dealer, you're right to hate jints fans. They're as brutal as can be. Image: Norther Jersey suburban dude of 25 who gets off of work early to hit the tanning bed, take a GNC shake before working out, putting on open shirt that barely conceals a shaved chest, lots of hair gel, and a pair of designer jeans. He calls the squad 'G-men' and roots identifies with Shockey...yeah, hate away...

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | December 26, 2006 2:46 PM

I'm swinging back and forth on what I think we're going to do Saturday. One minute it's a win next it's a stupid humiliating loss.

Ugh

So just to introduce a new topic where do we think the coaching vacancies are going to be?
Here is my list in no particular order.

Oakland
NY Giants
Cardinals
Indy - unless they get to SB
Cleveland

Long shots
Dallas
Tampa
Pittsburgh

I have dated an actress (two, actually). One was shallow and narcissistic, the other was and still is a sweetheart. The latter is more or less out of the biz now. The former is probably face down in a pile of blow (she never "made it" as far as I can tell).

Both were in my younger, thinner days, sadly. LA is a cruel, cruel mistress. Especially when it throws you to the curb because you're a senior citizen in Hollywood Years.

Not many actresses in Seattle. Basically just tree huggers who have disdain for the things I love (red carpets, Giorgio Armani, Dom Perignon, American sports) and ditzy airheads whose affection is for sale like a Blue Light Special. I miss NYC, Paris, and Sydney with all my heart.

Keira Knightley, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, and Natalie Portman are all drop-dead gorgeous in person, indeed. And with the exception of one, all seemingly very nice people. But of those four hotties, which one would you bet would have a legendary, admirable career like Merryl Streep or Katharine Hepburn? My money's on Portman.

Posted by: P Diddy | December 26, 2006 2:50 PM

portman takes herself a bit too seriously sometimes...
liked her in garden state but not in star wars and V

i'll go with knightley...if she wants to work more than 5 years...

alright...i'm out see ya when i see ya

Posted by: dealer | December 26, 2006 2:57 PM

My $$ is on Portman too. First movie I ever saw her in was "Beautiful Girls"... she was young, but her performance blew me away. And I told Mrs. ICU that she was gonna be a huge star someday. One of the few times I was right about anything I said to Mrs. ICU..

Glad there's some other talk going on here, cuz after losing on Sunday... I really got nothin...

Posted by: FromTheICU | December 26, 2006 3:08 PM

AMTTS, it's ok....I think the Jessicas (Alba and Biel) are very pretty young women.

So now I would like to state for the 1000th time how HOT I think Shawn Springs is...a few others.....Idris Elba (Stringer Bell from the Wire) Isaiah Washington (from Grey's Anatomy)...and I even think Santana Moss is hot.

Posted by: Lisa | December 26, 2006 3:30 PM

Skins News: Rumph Era Ends
From JLaC
The Washington Redskins placed cornerback Shawn Springs on injured reserve, ending his season with a fractured scapula, and waived depth cornerback Mike Rumph as well, while signing cornerback John Eubanks from the practice squad and signing free agent defensive back Leigh Torrence. Springs expected to be out five-to-six weeks with his injury; Rumph has been inactive six of the last seven games.
Eubanks has spent the season on the Redskins' practice squad after being signed as an un-drafted free agent out of Southern Mississippi in May. Torrence, 6-0, 183 pounds, is in his second NFL season out of Stanford. Originally signed as an un-drafted free agent in 2005 by Green Bay, he was waived by the Packers and signed with Atlanta prior to the start of the regular season. He saw action in 10 games in 2005 with the Falcons, playing on special teams and in the secondary. He was waived by the Falcons prior to the start of the 2006 season.
The Redskins also signed tackle Calvin Armstrong and wide receiver Ryan Hoag to the practice squad.
