Media Day Wrap-Up
If you're anything like me, then one of your top three highlights of this past NFL season was Dennis Green's meltdown after blowing a big lead to the Bears on Monday Night Football.
Remember, when he went on his "Just crown 'em" rant about the Bears and then smacked the microphone while a stunned press corpse fell into a awkward collective silence? Yeah, that one.
Turns out Bears linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo does a killer imitation of Green histrionics. It was so good, I asked for a repeat performance, and he was game. Ayanbedejo said the rant, which implied the Bears may be over-rated, was actually met with sympathy in the Chicago locker room.
"I respected him more after that, because he showed his true feelings and the way he was feeling," Ayanbedjo said. "Everybody would be sick to their stomach after a game like that, but is everyone going to do that, or are they going to try to sugar coat it? He showed the type of man he was and the frustration he had inside of him, and it's pure honesty. Especially for the media you want guys to be honest and true, and so often people duck and dodge the question."
Not to nitpick, but I'm not positive there even was a question in this case. But, overall, Brendon, I'm with you, bro.
Give me a Dennis Green at-the-podium-implosion presser any day, over the usual stuff I get up here.
Other Junk: You know ESPN is taking over the world when media day is filled with ESPN reporters interviewing ESPN analysts and talking-head types. It was out of control and it has to stop. Even with 53 players and a bunch of coaches strewn across the Dolphins Stadium field, the microphones were pointed inward ... Best haircut award goes to Colts reserve linebacker Keith O'Neil, who was rocking a crewcut Mohawk ... I know some of you guys are rooting for Norv to get the Dallas job, predicting imminent doom for that franchise. But his brother Ron, the Bears offensive coordinator, was making the case for Norv big-time during media day. It sounded like this thing was a fait accompli from the tone of some answers, and Ron is convinced his bro will shine in this situation. We'll see. Seems to me Norv is still best-suited to run the offense and not be The Primary Leader Of Men, but you never know I guess ... Party season is almost fully upon us. We had our first real function late tonight - a Sprint soirée on the beach by invite only. By Thursday it'll be bedlam down here. Of course, we'll represent The Washington Post in the most upstanding way possible on all of our party endeavors. (Cindy emailed me a press release from an attorney about how to stay out of trouble at the Super Bowl. Think that was a hint?).

well...here you go i googled what's his face...per request of Old School
Bobby DePaul, in his sixth year as the Bears director of pro personnel, has played an instrumental role to Chicago's two division championships achieved during his tenure with the team. Hired on June 19, 2001, the 17-year NFL veteran came to Chicago after serving as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles player personnel department for four years following an eight-year career as an NFL assistant coach.
DePaul evaluates players in the professional ranks, prepares the club for its acquisitions through free agency or the waiver wire and manages the advance scouting for Bears opponents. In addition to supervising the pro personnel department, DePaul has a hand in day-to-day football operations, assisting with salary cap maintenance, contract negotiations and overseeing the development of scouting football systems technology.
DePaul entered the NFL in 1989, hired by former Bears defensive back Richie Petitbon as a member of Joe Gibbs' coaching staff at Washington where he stayed until 1993 after winning an NFL championship with the Redskins' Super Bowl XXVI victory over Buffalo. The Bowie, Md., native then served on the Bengals coaching staff for three seasons before joining the Eagles as a scout.
Born in 1963, DePaul attended Archbishop John Carroll High School in Washington, D.C., where he played fullback and linebacker on a team that lost only once during his three-year varsity career. DePaul attended the University of Maryland and played linebacker on three Atlantic Coast Conference champion Terrapin squads and made four bowl appearances under former Detroit Lions and San Diego Chargers head coach Bobby Ross. DePaul and his wife, Lisa, have two daughters, Ariel and Ashley.

Ever since Green's presser after the Bears game, I always make a point to use the phrase "crown thier ass" when I play checkers

That one is up there with Mora and the playoffs. Green got fired that very day. Sadly, it was so obvious his team choked. The coaches and the players choked that day. Talk about a team that did nt believe they could win. He had to take the fall, but everyone will remember how the players just crumbled. Urlacher looked like a man playing against toddlers in that game.

1) I am often drunk and looking for a cab on the weekends, sometimes it takes a while....can i just call you?
Hell yeah! But what are your hours of need? before 5pm or after 5pm...
2)can i sample whatever it is that your dealing?
No! this aint maggie moo's ibtch! (just playing...i just HAD to!) but seriously no, you can't. i'm not like the evil pharmas that get you hooked to their shtuff. i believe in the old japanese saying "teach them how to grow their own instead"...
Posted by: dealer | January 30, 2007 5:20 PM
Hell yeah! But what are your hours of need? before 5pm or after 5pm...
Mostly after 5pm....but you never know depending on how long the night goes or how well the poker chips fall. usually between 2-4am.
Posted by: TM | January 30, 2007 5:28 PM
I'm very proud of TM for choosing to take a cab. I'm still amazed that people choose to drink and drive in this day and age.
You could always live in a large urban area and stumble home, but that's too hard, I suppose. Nothing is more satisfying to me than drinking to excess and still having my wits about me to be able to walk home.

whoever dropped that Dennis Green clip, thank you. That guy was pissed. And then he just stared at you with cold, dark eyes and walked away. It gave me shivers. Now we just need that Mora clip and I'll sleep easy tonight.

Lisa, Nate, Dealer, and Crew. As is well on this end. I been following the blog but haven't post. (I get in these moods when don't want to be bothered by anyone)
This is off topic so you can skip if you want. Let me tell you want made me feel better.
Man why people want to f with me today? I am at the gym getting ready to do my squats. It week 4 of my 13 week cycle. So I am still lifting light. So I have all my stuff at the squat machine and step off to the bathroom. I come back and this guy is taking the weight off. So, I am like that's my stuff I am working out here. He looks at me like he wants some action but think better of it and move on to the rack two spaces down. So I start my workout and he looking over at what I am doing and add as much weight as I am. At this point I am like OK f it if you want to play I am going to bust your damn heart. (remember I can squat 510lbs) We get up to 315 pounds and he damn near buckle both his knees. I give him a look like come on girlie boy. Put another 90 pounds on the bar and push out another set of 5. And his b**** ass step off.
Posted by: jm220 | January 30, 2007 6:41 PM
you just made my day jm... now i can sleep easy tonight
don't forget to replenish!
Posted by: dorf | January 30, 2007 6:46 PM
jm220,
Glad to hear you are ok...I was worried.
You can squat 510 lbs??? Whoa!
That was a funny story.....the gym can be a really strange place at times. We have people at my gym who hog the machines....they will sit on a machine and read! A guy used to come in (have not seen him in awhile) and he danced between sets. He was a pretty good dancer but looked like an idiot.
Posted by: Lisa | January 30, 2007 6:46 PM
Thanks for the concern Lisa. And yes I can squat 510lbs. (as stated before the strength is just not in my upper body lol)
Dorf he just didn't know how close he came to getting it.
Posted by: jm220 | January 30, 2007 6:52 PM
JM220 - That's crazy. Why is some dude gonna compare to my 195 lbs of beer belly?
Dennis Green - My fav part is 'They are who we thought they are'. I use that all the time and it fits!
Any follow up on the WTEM 980 chat with CP yesterday? Did anyone catch it?
I'm starting to not like the Riggo show. All they do is talk about where they ate, how bad the hotel is, how drunk they were, and El Riggo sightings. I don't turn into sports talk radio for this. Riggo is fine and everything, but he is like any other drunk person. Laughable at the beggining and you are ready to tell his butt enough already after a while....
Posted by: 4th | January 30, 2007 7:00 PM
That's why we need another SB...To have new memories and stop living 25 years ago....
Even G Clark said it's ridiculous how he and former teamates still get paid to do appeareances 16 years after they won a SB. That is too long. But we still got a good chance to make it 3 decades in a row for SB wins....
Posted by: 4th | January 30, 2007 7:04 PM
You tengo un great gym story... last week I was doing leg presses (sorry jm, I can't do squats) and this lady comes in right outta work, she had on these heeled calf boot things, a long skirt, a silky blouse and a long decorative scarf. She comes up to this high school kid on one of the elliptical machines and I'm thinking mom is picking up son on the way home from the work. NO. She bullies the kid off of the machine and begins to work out. about 5 minutes in she sweating all over herself and ditches the scarf. I leave the gym just as my roommates are going to the gym and they tell me later she was on that machine in her nice work clothes for about an hour. Probably a sure bet she winds up one of those crazy cat ladies down the road.
Posted by: Dorf | January 30, 2007 7:09 PM
Hey 4th. What's good? Man I hope CP doesn't bite the hand that feeds him. I like Betts but don't trust him to carry the load.

JM220 - Did you check out the ESPN the MAg article on ESPN.com? I put the link up earlier today.
Who do you think is the 5 'other redskins players'?
1. Grim Reaper
After that, I'm stuck.....
Posted by: 4th | January 30, 2007 7:23 PM
4th I read the article early this morning. Fist of all I would make damn sure to know everything there is to know about a person before I deal with them. It's hard to believe that they didn't know that he is not a doctor. I don't see a problem with them seeking to take natural healing products at all. Everyone should try to take natural healing products but medicine is big money in this country and the world. Most things people take have like 5 side effects that is going to cause you to go out and get more pills. Think about the hurt players during the season and you might have your answer. Springs would be one I would add to the list.(sorry Lisa lol)
Posted by: jm220 | January 30, 2007 7:39 PM
I agree, there is nothing wrong with this. But I am afraid the local media or Yahoo sports (Ha!) might do a little uneccessary snooping....
The guy has some top flight people, though. Starting with TO. If he is the reason TO was able to play in the SB, he is the MAN. The real doctors said it couldn't be done just like they are saying now that he is a fake doctor.
Posted by: 4th Floor | January 30, 2007 7:51 PM
But you gotta admit, though. CP got built real fast in the offseason 2 years ago. Now we know why. He may not be taking nothing illeagal, but that's because the NFL is not ahead of the curve, no one is.....
Posted by: 4th | January 30, 2007 7:54 PM
No doubt 4th. There are things out there that you can get that won't show up. But you pay a price later on my friend. A price that I am not willing to pay. I like my kidney, liver, and manhood the way it is. lol

Maybe we should call you 'Dr.' 220.
I see you prescribing stuff to alot of peeps on this blog (Lisa, JLaC/Tony/Maske/Wilbon's Editor, etc, etc). Maybe we need to do a ESPN the Mag article on your so called 'Gym and Protein Shake training'??

ohh cindy, re: barbaro i heard andrew beyer on riggo today. and i just have to say one thing: how come people who cover horse racing and boxing are completely different from people who cover everything else(sports)? in that they don't take themselves so seriously. cool dude.
and 4th, yeah i know what you mean about riggo. but what is there to talk about? look at this blog.
whomever wanted to know about Depaul...old school mentioned that he heard a rumor that Skins were looking at Depaul and FORCED us to "google Depaul"...or whatever his name is...so i did. i can't imagine bears letting him go without some serious compensation like 5 first round picks :)
Posted by: dealer | January 30, 2007 8:43 PM
As you can see. I am still at work, but I am about to leave.
Where are all the WC 'Skins @ today? 8K? Nate? San Fran? Skinswest? Was there a Blackout on the left coast today?
Oh well. I'm heading home to a bunch of people who will be sleep by the time I get home. This is one reason my son believes I am a Super Hereo since I appear never to be home in the evening/night time. But I magicall am the one that wakes him up in the morn after saving lifes. Priceless.
I am who think I am.
Posted by: 4th Floor | January 30, 2007 8:43 PM
Dealer - He was doing this during the season, though. Some days they wouldn't even talk about the Redskins. Riggo is here because we (the Media really) keeps feeding him $$ like I do to this one girl at my favorite gentleman's club spot. As long as I'm giving them, she keeps on coming and smiling at me (Al Bundy moment and yes, my wife knows about my adventures)...
But Riggo was who I thought he was since I he was on once a week with the 'Sports Reporters'...
Beyer was on B Mitch earlier and was saying the owner was a Rockefella Kin-folk, so he wasn't trying to keep him alive for the $$$.

LMAO!!! I am in tears over that one Lisa. What is going on with the gyms back home? lol

I'm not sure what was up with that lady, jm220, but I kinda wanted to have what she was having :-) My elliptical machine "experience" is not on the same level.
Posted by: Lisa | January 30, 2007 10:18 PM
my favorite 'elliptical lady' was one that apparently was a runner in a former life, hopped on to the elliptical next to me, and started pounding away at it. I glance over and it looks like she's doing over 100rpm, that the flywheel is about to come off, and that if anything goes wrong she is going to be wearing a mouthful of exercise equipment.
Pointing out the resistance control made everyone breathe more easily.

Lisa... the Wiz looked good tonight... I will not comment on anything else you may have said or not experienced. Good grief.
is there a word or phrase for when you think you see a pretty girl across the gym and then she comes up to where you're working out and sits down on the machine next to you and she turns out be like 45??? That was my experience today.
Posted by: Dorf | January 30, 2007 10:51 PM
Dorf, the Wiz did look good tonight....especially since Jamison went down....I was so worried we would lost that game without his points.
So what's wrong with 45? Older can be better.....
Posted by: Lisa | January 30, 2007 11:08 PM
awww man... yeah 45 well... geez..Diddy, isn't there some kind of mathamatical equation that can help me get my foot out of my mouth?
25 45-25 = 20
something like that

(old news, but my attempt to post this yesterday failed)
Stopped over in Bears-crazed O'Hare yesterday and found that marketing-mail-planted 'story' about Urlacher's fishing show + cookies + heavy water regimen in the Tribune. This was vaguely cited as 'heard on the street' under the byline of Fred (not Fred-Ex) Mitchell. I combed through the Sun-Times and did not see this 'story' 'reported.'
Boston sports radio (and I listened to a lot in my travels yesterday) is acting like a SB without their beloved Pats is not really a big deal. What a bunch of sore losers.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | January 31, 2007 8:10 AM
OK,OK
reminds me of a story. I was working out at the GMU fieldhouse about 8 years ago when I wanted to find a 10 pound dumbell off the rack. I start walking down the rack looking for my weights when I cross in front of this guy lifting huge weight. To my surprise, he throws his weight in front of me and screams "GODDAMMITT!!! Don't EVER break my concentration again or I'll kill you Be-itch."
I couldn't help it ... I burst out laughing in hysterics. I laughed so hard my gut hurt. All these gym rats saw this, heard this, and saw me laughing at this geek. He walked away and wasn't seen again.
*hugs*
