A New Day, A New Thread
This is Cindy filling in for JLaC, who's preparing for Chloepalooza (she turns 2 this week)...
You say you need a new thread like a certain team that shall remain nameless needs a GM? I deliver.
Just wanted to point out a Joe Gibbs mention in Liz Clarke's NASCAR story in today's paper. But first, a bit of context. Remember the last time Coach Joe went back to NASCAR in the offseason and mentioned that he didn't know how much longer he could do the fubball thing and some media outlets didn't realize he was kidding? He had to do a second presser to explain. Well, if you'll recall, the person who rightly understood what he was saying that time was Liz Clarke, who formerly covered the Skins (though not under Gibbs). Because of covering NASCAR when Gibbs was out of fubball, she knows him better than probably anyone at the Post.
I tell you this so that you will take this snippet with something like a grain of salt, since Liz did not go to DEFCON. Breath deeply! Perspective! Context! Still, it's an interesting quote and I figure it's good for about 200 blog posts at the minimum.
Liz writes:
On hand for Tony Stewart's victory was his car owner, Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs.
"It was great to be back and win something again. I got kicked around pretty good this year in football and it was fun being back with the guys. ... I miss the NASCAR family."

Thanks for the new post Cyn Cyty. I take it you are feeling much better.
Posted by: jm220 | February 11, 2007 1:48 PM
Well I doubt he'd say he didn't miss the NASCAR family.
That would not be very nice.
Posted by: Cliff Huxtable | February 11, 2007 1:52 PM
I saw Gibbs make the comment and he was laughing.
Incidentally, although I am not a Nascar fan, it seems to me that whenever Tony Stewart does well, the Skins do well.

He doesn't like winning??? Why do you think MJ came back to basketball for 3 more rings? Why do you think he quickly left the Wiz after he realized he wasn't going to do any winning there (sorry lisa) Why do you think Joe Torre owns racing horses??? Winning makes ya feel good. In middle school, I won a belching contest and to this day am still proud of it.
Thanks for coming through Cindy, Jason have a great week! Hope to hear from you bye and bye. *burp*
Posted by: Dorf | February 11, 2007 1:59 PM
Dorf,
I don't know what you meant by the comment about MJ - he definitely was not going to win here because HE (MJ) did not have it anymore when he was playing....and then he was fired from his management position. I admit to being distraught about that at the time and saying I would never watch the Wiz again....until I read a book about Jordan's Wizards days (and the way he treated Pollin)and totally changed my tune.

What would be a Portis Throwback Jersey??? (From other Post)
Posted by: 4th via Home Floor | February 11, 2007 4:23 PM
Also, did anyone else watch FCP last night. It had the old time Regs and was an a=instant classic, I lie to you not. It was George/Dupree/Wilbon/& TK. George told TK, 'you know you're idea is ripped from this show, don't ya??' and TK gave a little shrug/smirk. I forgot all the details of the show due to my 'short term memory', but again it was classic last night.........
Posted by: 4th Floor via Home Floor | February 11, 2007 4:26 PM
Ok, I remember One thing....
George was talking about the rumors of Garnett going to the Wizards. they started to talk a little, then he said that the rumors are being circulated on this thing called a BLOG. George then said, a blog is this thing where anyone can post comments. Then TK gets RILLED UP, and breaks down even further about BLOGS. George also added that if anyone can post anything on a blog and people around the world can read it, we (BLOGGERS) in essence have just as much power as Wilbon and TK and they are being diminished...
TK says, BLOGS are these sites where anyone can post whatever they want, True or Untrue. Then he said, "if you are hearing Gibbs is retiring next year and Bill Cowher is coming in to coach and the blogger post his name as 'Diesel Man', than you might want to skipp over that one"
Sorry Diesel, but hey - At least TK gave you a semi-Shout Out.....
Posted by: 4th | February 11, 2007 4:36 PM
It's as much fun to kick around various topics with our ad hoc panel of armchair experts up here as it is to watch TK's very public struggle to make sense of the new Technology for opinion dispersal. Which is to say, both are really fun.
'Diesel Man' is an even funnier nickname than 'Diesel.'
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 11, 2007 4:54 PM
Kornheiser also said that "bloggers are people who live in their parents basements." Very mean, Tony!
Posted by: Lisa | February 11, 2007 5:02 PM
Lisa - That was very funny and I was trying to figure out which one of us were living in our parents' basement and are living a total lie on this blog....
Posted by: 4th | February 11, 2007 5:11 PM
4th, TK definitely was not referring to me - both my parents have passed away and we did not even have a basement when I was growing up.
I'm hoping he was referring to the NBA bloggers....I have visited the WashPo Wizards blog and it does seem like most everyone on there wants to trade all the players, fire the coach, and they act like they know how to "fix" everything....and this was when the Wiz were winning and in first place!
Posted by: Lisa | February 11, 2007 5:18 PM
Ohh. I see what you mean. Plus TK and everyone else has to trash the bloggers or they won't have a job in a few years or so since we are becoming 'Pros' at just spitting whateva off the top of our heads.....
Posted by: 4th | February 11, 2007 5:48 PM
No wonder this blog post is so stupid, it comes from a woman who probably doesn't know how many downs there are in football. And Cindy obviously did not watch Joe make these comments on Tv, making her blog even stupid lol
Posted by: BDR | February 11, 2007 6:05 PM
Listen based on some of what I know about my peeps here at RI ahem Diddy I'm guessing some parents basements may be really quite swank.
I always find it strange when journalist/pundits etc get all riled up about forums like blogs where the *gasp* masses get to pontificate and put forth their views. Umm ain't that what a pluralistic democratic republic is all about?
Also it is quite clear to me that most of the core bloggers here are at least as smart if not smarter than 99% of the pundits. This isn't a poke at TK whom I love and think is great but at all the other blowhards.
Posted by: sflancer | February 11, 2007 6:08 PM
We used to refer to Riggins as the Diesel and Diesel Man while he was playing. Are you and TK sure it isn't him that is posting about Gibbs/Cowher?
Posted by: Sam | February 11, 2007 6:11 PM
BDR, I'm sure Cindy knows more about football than you do....and why are you posting here if you think it is stupid....that makes you....stupid, right?
You must be a miserable Cowboys fan that lives in his parents basement.

Looks like we got a 'Living out a my Mommas Basement' Blogger....
Bob Dumb-A** Richards (BDR for short) eat your food and go back downstairs to watching the Cartoon Channel so me and Moms can have some privecy.
Posted by: 4th | February 11, 2007 6:12 PM
Sam - TK himself believes that Cowher is coming to the Redskins next year, but with a GM.
Diesel from our blog I believe choose this name because of El Riggo, but I am quite sure it isn't him. I believe Riggo would not care for the Redskins of now if they wasn't paying him. But hay, I'm just a blogger, so what do I know?
Posted by: 4th | February 11, 2007 6:20 PM
I'm in my Mommy's guest room. Does that count?

Hi there, fellow bloglodytes! Just dropped in for a minute to say hello.
I don't really follow NBA basketball, but what happened to Agent Zero and the Wizards today? They didn't look like they could have beaten Duke.
Does anyone know this new basement blogger clown who appeared today? BDR, I am pretty sure that Cindy has forgotten more about football than you will ever know. You may want to remember that the next time you are tempted to type anything up here. In any case, JM220 will be along later to lay the hammer to you, Pal. And that will probably be right after Cindy lays you out with a smack to the back of your head with her trusty sidekick, the official NFL Statistics book.
By the way, it's nice to hear you enjoyed your Popeye's and Pinot evening, Cindy. I hope they cured what was ailing you. If not, here's a link to a decent offering for consideration on your next outing:
Have a great rest of the afternoon (Peeplogger #1) and evening!

P.S. I saw part of the Gibbs NASCAR presser late last night. Gibbs seemed really happy, and was laughing/giggling in that bizarre way he does sometimes. It was a little strange, and may be cause for some worry in Redskins Land (if you are one of those who don't want to see him leave here).
Possible worst case scenario: Gibbs decides to leave without notice; Grilliams gets promoted to HC/CEO for 2007 and someone who is super smart gets to run the defense instead. Grilliams gets fired after 1 year, making room for Cowher or Grimm in 2008.
Sometimes you just have to look a little harder to find the silver lining. : )
Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | February 11, 2007 7:08 PM
I saw the presser as well and Gibbs was joking about the Skins having a lousy season in that funny way of his. I see now why the Reaper does not talk to the press....one can't say anything without it being twisted in another direction.
Gibbs is NOT leaving the team. Why do I believe this so emphatically? Because he is not Parcells or Saban. He is loyal and would not leave Snyder hanging like this. He may leave after this season but whenever he does he will give Snyder plenty of notice.
Posted by: Lisa | February 11, 2007 7:15 PM
I vote for Grimm.
Smack - You are given a pas son this one....
Posted by: 4th | February 11, 2007 7:16 PM
Ocho-Ocho I would give him the hammer. But he is not worth the time. Haven't you guys notice stupid clowns like that don't even get a response from me? It's just Boofer using another name to try and get some love. After JLC gave us the info on this loser (as we all knew he was) there is no need to waste energy on him.
Posted by: jm220 | February 11, 2007 7:32 PM
Grimms HC record with Buffalo is as follows
2001 3-13
2002 8-8
2003 6-10
2004 fired
Grimms D stats with redskins is as follows
2004 3rd in the NFL
2005 9th in the NFL
2006 31st in the NFL
Grimms has a clause in his contract that says he takes over(only way to keep him here) when Gibbs retires.CANT SPIN THIS!!
Posted by: stat of the week | February 11, 2007 7:42 PM
stat of the week that contract also states that if he doesn't become the head coach Dan has to pay him 1 mil. I say pay him the mil, smack him in the back of his damn head, and kick him out the door.
Pulling out the hammer. BDR double smack to the back of your damn head. Show some class you clown. No one here here wants to read your childish comments. Another double smack to the back of your damn head.
Posted by: jm220 | February 11, 2007 7:48 PM
I think the only way St. Joe leaves early is if his health dictates it. Otherwise, he bleeds burgundy and gold and will see his contract through. And "Mr." Snyder would never, ever, ever, ever tell his boyhood idol to take a hike. St. Joe has been a great coach, and probably still is. The playoff run from 2 seasons ago should let you know everything you need to know about his ability to motivate players of this era.
Posted by: P Diddy | February 11, 2007 7:55 PM
BDR? Seriously, what's your problem? Act like an adult.
Posted by: P Diddy | February 11, 2007 7:56 PM
jm220, are you sure its boofer(everyone who busts is going to be boofer)and what did JLC say & how does he know boofer?
Posted by: Cliff | February 11, 2007 7:58 PM
That Boofer is a loser. (OK I said that and not JLC)
Boofer sent him an e mail telling him how he likes pushing people's buttons. He does it with his family all the time. And if JLC wants him to help push the daily number of posts he was more than willing to help. Oh yeah and he is from the DC area.
BDR post and a couple of other post just makes me think it is him. I could be wrong but I don't think so.
Posted by: jm220 | February 11, 2007 8:07 PM
jm220, so boofer has become this urban legend on this blog and even when hes not here everybody thinks he is.I hate to tell you this jm220 but it sounds like he pushed your buttons quite well(hes in your head)and that could get us through the boring months.BOOFER LIVES!lol

Sorry to disappoint you Cliff. He is no where close to being in my head my friend. Just think of Boofer patterns and BDR post. The patterns are the same.
As I stated to my man Ocho-Ocho. I don't even respond to those silly post after getting the info from JLC. But BDR post about Cyn Cyty went over the line.

I don't know jm... boofer pushed buttons but it was always sort of clean and childish and for the most part we had fun with him. BDR was over the line big time and cindy needs to limit free speech up here on that comment.
Not trying to jinx anything, but this storm is starting to sound like 1996 all over again! I say this with confidence because yesterday an old lady called the Dept. of Transit in Hburg while I was dispatching and said she wanted to cancel her para-transit pick up because her hip was telling her we're getting a lot of snow.
The ol' Hip never lies. I believe!!!

Posted by: jm220 | February 11, 2007 08:21 PM
Absolutely, but does doing anything other than ignoring it serve only to bring him back? As Chris Larry once said, never argue with a fool -- they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
That Chris Larry -- an undiscovered gem of eastern thought and original commentary. Only on RI...
Posted by: cload and daggar | February 11, 2007 9:45 PM
Clpad,
While I agree with you (and Chris Larry) about ignoring the idiots, sometimes they go over the line and it's simply impossible.
Posted by: Lisa | February 11, 2007 10:05 PM
Lisa, it is over the line, but there are only two possible solutions -- have Cyn Cyty monitor all entries (which will kill what's fun about this setup -- the interactivity -- and does it look like Cindy has a lot of extra time?) or shut the whole thing down.
It's just like the guy that was "funny" yesterday asking for a kielbasa -- ignore him, and maybe he'll go away. Even if he doesn't, if you ignore him long enough, he will.
I check on the blog far too often for my own good, mainly so I don't miss the odd chance to catch Nate lurching in with some brew in the belly and a ready stream of consciousness. It's well worth the odd idiot post...

My Five Guys Review:
Atmosphere: 50's look (no, not as nearly as creepy as all of 70's poconos).
Things to rember:
A. TAKE CASH!!!!!! cuz they don't take plastic.
3. They only have beef and potatoe products.
D. Only order ONE order of fries for every 3 people eating.
2. If you're taking out please rember to ask to triple bag it cuz the oil from the fries will ruin your nice seats.
What I had: had a regular burger which includes two patties (but they were thin enough for you to not really notice them). with mayo, ketchup, mustard, FRIED ONIONS, JALAPENOs, green shtuff, tomatoes. and fries.
It was good. Though I can't imagine ever eating it without those ingredients specifically the jalapenos. It's kinda like amWendy's burger. And of course King of All Burgers In-N-Out still stands alone by itself. But it did satisfy my cravings for a burger.
And of course i had this after my terps put a serious beatdown on Duke! woooooohooooo!!!!!! go terps! AND U AND U AND U AND U!
haven't caught up with anything...and have to get up early 5...so better go...see ya.
and ohhhhh we gonna get like 10 feet of snow in dc!!!!!! on tuesday! so better keep an eye on the snow cam in cindy's backyard! peace my loves!

There is no way Joe is leaving now. They are still working their way up. A couple more pieces snap in place (management and players) and they are a championship team. You just have to believe that Joe can see and implement those pieces. If he does than I would love to pass the torch to Grilliams. The whole team has made mistakes, but if they can overcome and win than you know they have learned from them. Grilliams is brilliant, and I love his disciplinarian/old school style. Knock his ego down with 4-5 years of Gibbs and you could have a great HC. And talk about structure and continuity. That is what dynsasties are built of. I love this plan, Im sticking to it. Trust In Joe!
Posted by: monkalicious | February 11, 2007 10:43 PM
That contingency in Grilliams' contract -- the million bucks if he's not the next Lancers' HC -- was added when Snyder boosted his package to keep him from seriously considering other HC offers because Gibbs really wanted to keep him around.
And as happens sometimes when dudes who get paid and assured of outcomes, Grilliams went out and had an awful season by any measure (not that it's cause and effect, but that's what happened).
Like some of you, I believe Gibbs stays through the end of this contract barring problems with his own health. So two more seasons, which is an eternity in the NFL.
There is no way to predict what will happen when Gibbs leaves the team. It's all guesswork. The Grilliams poison pill will be of no consequence when the time comes to fill our HC vacancy. A couple of BIG variables are whether team president Gibbs will want to stick around in some capacity other than HC, AND if he'll want to name his successor, but again I don't know how to predict either of those based on what we know now.

4th, a Portis throwback is a Portis jersey done in the old style: dark maroon, w/ spears. I don't think the skins have played in them since the Spurrier days but you'd probably remember them by the helmets w/ the spears on 'em.

Just catching up on earlier the posts about TK and 'Diesel Man'... pretty funny, but I doubt Tony reads this blog and concentrates on anything I post. Plus, I NEVER posted anything about Cowher coming to the Skins. (I live in Raleigh and personally believe he will be coaching the Panthers in 2 years)
Anyway, I use the name 'Diesel' as a tribute to my fav skins of all time, John Riggins. Every now and then, I go with the name '70 chip' (the play Riggo ran on 4th down to win the Superbowl against the Dolphins).
Maybe TK was joking that the REAL John Riggins spends time blogging here and making predictions.

Would you rather a coach that gets run over like Norv Turner. Biggest difference between Gibbs 1 and Gibbs 2 is that Gibbs 2 is softer, and it shows in the team's play. Nothing wrong with kicking chairs.
Posted by: monkalicious | February 12, 2007 10:10 AM
I heard a rumor that TK was leaving MNF, getting a sex change, and joining The View. And during football season he will be the head cheerleader for the Redskins.
(couldn't resist posting something ridiculous under this name, just in case TK really reads this blog looking for posts from 'Diesel Man')
--Diesel
Posted by: Diesel Man | February 12, 2007 10:10 AM
No way TK reads this -- the signal to noise ratio is too low. But I can believe that when TK and Cyn were chatting during the playoff/superbowl blogging adventure, that she mentioned the name 'Diesel' to him, and he recalled that...
Blog law says that this moment of fame cannot be deducted from your fifteen minutes.
Posted by: cload and daggar | February 12, 2007 10:18 AM
Thanks, Cload and daggar... good to know any attention from the blog does not count against my 15 mins of fame. In high school I was interviewed by the local TV3 news team during football season... that was maybe 3 minutes long, so I still have 12 mins left at this point. What if TK wants to spend '5 Good Minutes' with me on PTI? Would that count?
Posted by: Diesel | February 12, 2007 10:25 AM
Diesel, national TV does count. Unless, under subclause F of paragraph 3 of Section 2, he's asking you what you would do with the #6 pick. That type of discussion is deemed to be 'valueless', and is not deducted.
Unless of course you preface your comments with "long time/first time", and ask how he's doing. Then the minutes are deducted from your overall lifespan.
Posted by: cload and daggar | February 12, 2007 10:33 AM
Thanks for clarifying, Cload. I agree with and accept you terms.

The difference between Gibbs I and Gibbs II is Playa's. Gibbs I had lots them, there were ones that had talent, and they were over acheivers.Gibbs II almost no talent on (defense) and lots of under acheivers. The coaches are fine they all have track records of success. This is a QB led league, if have one, you have a chance to build something.

I dunno if this got covered in yesterday's LONG thread, but Cyn Cyty was on the money about the Pro Bowl and our very own Reaper last Friday. This is from ESPN.COM:
>>>>>>>>
Defensive players typically don't deliver their hardest hits in Hawaii, and Brees -- who throws right-handed -- didn't appear to get hit particularly hard while throwing a fourth-down incompletion on the NFC's second offensive series.
Washington safety Sean Taylor ignored those rules of decorum in the third quarter when he hit Buffalo's Brian Moorman hard enough to knock the punter's legs at least 2 feet off the ground. But Moorman, who had been attempting a fake run, popped up and ran onto the field to say hello to Taylor.

Taylor's best years are ahead of him. He needs that confidence back, which I think comes in the form of trusting his teammates and trusting the scheme. Assuming we make some improvements in both areas, like the Terminator, he'll be back.

Did anyone watch America's Game last night on the network. Fans voted the top twenty all time superbowl teams, 85 Bears were numerio uno. Best single season team I ever saw, that show really captured the ferocity in which that team got after it. I can honestly say that team was and is the only NFL team I ever saw other teams afraid to play. I mean you could tell very early in lots of their games the other team wanted no part of them. The program reminded me of their offical comming out party week 11 national TV against Dallas in Dallas good (team at the time). I remember watching that game and thinking I may actually watch some killed in a Football Game. From the moment the game started until it was over 44-0, you knew you were watching something the league had not seen before. It wasn't just the sacks I think they had 8 that day, it was total mayhem and fear they created in the opponent and the stadium (Dallas fans were probbally thinking like me, someone may die out here today).
Posted by: Old School | February 12, 2007 11:05 AM
They showed the hit I talked about the other day. The one when Wilbur Marshall laid out Lion's QB Joe Fergusson, He was out in mid air taken off the field on strecher, didn't move or twitch, thought he was dead. Ditka on the show when speaking about that 85 defense said he was at times awestruck just like a fan, and started naming guys Dent, singeltary, Otis Wilson, then he says Marshall shakes head "scary".

Chronic prostate irritation, or prostatitis, can result in pelvic discomfort as well as problems with urinating frequency and urgency. Doctors often recommend routine sexual activity to men with prostatitis because ejaculations help flush the prostate clean. The gland's function is to contribute to the production of seminal fluid, and regular evacuations represent a pleasurable bit of self-care.

old school, one thing gibbs II has that gibbs I did not is the ability to pick playas with NFL experience(FAs) and an owner to pay them like kings!so not having playas is a terrible excuse.

In any case, real or imaginary TK, Gibbs 1 was able to get good talent in the 80s, due to :1) the lack of salary cap; 2) Mr. Cooke's willingness to open his checkbook as necessary; 3) B. Beathard's outstanding work in identifying talent in early FA ventures, such as the demise of the USFL/WFL.
Because the UFA system did not yet exist, good talent could be retained at will; i.e. you didn't lose good players after they developed to unrestricted free agency. With Beathard's initial selection prowess, the Gibbs 1 Redskins were a very talented group.

KITTANNING, Pa. (AP) -- A woman pleaded guilty Monday to trying
to cut a fetus from her neighbor's womb.
Peggy Jo Conner, 39, of Manor Township, pleaded guilty to
attempted homicide, aggravated assault and kidnapping in the attack
on Valerie Oskin, which authorities said was a plot to steal
Oskin's baby and keep it as her own.
The plea came as Conner's trial was scheduled to begin Monday in
Armstrong County.
Authorities accused Conner of attacking Oskin on Oct. 13, 2005,
inside her home with a baseball bat, and then driving Oskin to a
remote location, where she used a razor knife to cut open Oskin's
abdomen in an effort to remove her unborn baby.
Oskin and the baby survived after a boy on an all-terrain
vehicle spotted the women in a clearing and told his father, who
summoned police to the scene.
The baby was delivered by emergency Caesarean section and was
put up for adoption, which had been Oskin's intention even before
she was attacked.
Conner initially had been charged with two counts of attempted
homicide, but prosecutors withdrew the charge that alleged Conner
intended to kill the unborn baby.

TW's bringing it strong to the mike -- err, blog -- but I have no additional insight into Gibbs I's success. The only thing that comes to mind is that Gibbs I did it without a marquee QB, and I don't think you can get away with that anymore. It made sense to hedge your bets when the QB was a normal player and could be touched by the other team. Now, a reasonably good QB can be expected to start the whole season.

Eagles Coach Reid to Take Leave
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/12/AR2007021200533.html
If his LOA only runs until mid March, this isn't a major issue. However, ignoring family/personal issues involved, I'd be very surprised if all of the legal issues of both of son's sons cases would have ended by mid-March, so I'm somewhat concerned that the LOA could stretch out for longer than the initial announcement.

I think what we'd all like to see is a little more of 'old school Joe' from training camp forward. A little more bark, a little more bite. Feeling like he is not just 'managing' but in control of the team, especially the offense.
Just hoping we've seen the last midseason awakenings, 'returns to Redskin football', renewed commitment to the running game, etc. I want to see Gibbs football from the first snap of the first doggone game.

Possible topics:
Has the Wizards' recent implosion doomed them for the season?
Best possible uses for Redskins who are dead money but can't be cut. (For example, B Lloyd becomes Sean Taylor's personal tackling dummy.)
In the later rounds, should the Redskins pick by need or for best available player?
Maybe one of those will be fun for awhile. I have to get back to work, so I will try to catch up on them later.

The dog owner is in the wrong if this is 'third incident.' I'm a dog lover, and it's the owner's responsibility to keep that bull mastiff under wraps, especially if it has a history. The Green Beret defending himself is not the issue. No reason for you to be involved in this at all unless you absolutely have to. Jeff HAyes - That was me.
I was saying that he and Andy Polly was on the same plane back to DC from Miami. They got to talking and Vincent says Gibbs is very Hands On on the offense from what he observed. He also said the both Assistan HCs report directly to him.
Posted by: 4th | February 12, 2007 1:02 PM
Dorf, your awesome 'dead salary' post reminded me of a funny quote from Olie the Goalie about an offensively challenged Cap who got a goal. Olie's joke was that the dude's shot is known to be very weak so the opposing goalie wasn't expecting it. The euphemism employed about his notoriously weak shot -- and hopefully the Brunell tie-in makes sense now -- was 'throwing muffins.' I guess if puck=biscuit, weak shot=throwing muffins.
So yeah, Brunell throws muffins. On the field, they gently float towards the bench or skip on the turf. Off the field, they delight waterfowl.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 12, 2007 1:05 PM
The Troy Vincent 'interview' was that Andy Pollin of WTEM shared a flight -- down to Miami? or somewhere else? -- and sat right behind him, so they killed some time on the plane.
Shockingly, he wouldn't name Deep Cover.

"The Vikings still are banking on Tarvaris Jackson becoming their starting quarterback next season. But a little birdie says that if Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn is available at No. 7, chances are better than not that he'll either be chosen by the Vikings or the pick will be traded lower to a team that covets Quinn more than Minnesota. Quinn's draft status, for Minnesota, is still to be determined by workouts and extensive film study. But the Vikings will have an entourage of scouts at Notre Dame for his personal workout on March 4."
So, we rell the Vikings we are trading our pick to someone else so they can get Brady, and we will make them surrender their #7 this year, a 1st next year and this year's 3rd Rounder. Whaddaya think?
Posted by: 4th | February 12, 2007 1:11 PM
4th, would the Vikes trade that much when they know we're not drafting a QB at #6? In your scenario would they trade up to avoid someone else from trading up to our spot? Hmm... sounds like we won't know that one until draft day. But I like where your head's at.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 12, 2007 1:23 PM
Then the Vikings will take too long to make their pick at #6 and their time will run out, and the Skins will jump up and use #7 to take Quinn anyway, and then trade him back to the Vikings for another pick or two.
Posted by: The Mole | February 12, 2007 1:32 PM
Yeah, but the Redskins can send a little 'birdie' over to the Vikes and tell them about a potential trade the Redskins may get involved in which may entice the Vikes, who are more desparate than us to switch spots in the draft........
Posted by: 4th | February 12, 2007 1:32 PM
Mole, nicely done.
Didn't the Vikes screw up their first rounder two years in a row? That's the good stuff. Nothing to fire up your tortured fan base on draft day like screwing that up.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 12, 2007 1:46 PM
In our attempts to fix the franchise, have we ever pinpointed an exact moment when it broke? Something like trading up to draft Desmond Howard in '92, or Gibbs leaving in '93, or drafting Shuler in '94, or Westbrook in '95 or....wait, I think I answered my own question.

So, technically, it is a throwback Redskins' Jersey with Portis' #.......
Posted by: 4th | February 12, 2007 2:03 PM
Maybe they're going to wear the throwbacks again this season since it's the franchise's 75th anniversary. They were originally unveiled for the 70th season.
In other words, maybe Jersey Bob is 'intecepting' jerseys bound for the Skins store for sale in anticipation of this season. But I don't know anything about any of this, just making conversation, as usual.

The fall began once Bethard left. Gibbs began to have a say in personnel and the team started to make bad decisions. Gibbs, like Noah, Moses, Joseph and David before him, knew bad times were ahead and got the heck out of town. I guess we're now living the new testament Redskins style and Joe is John the Baptist rather than the true savior.
Posted by: LH | February 12, 2007 2:35 PM
I'm voting for the Squire's passing as the turning point for the franchise.
Yeah, it sucked when Gibbs left and the FA era began; we had a tough time with that. But the long ugly fight about the Cooke estate, with the NFL letting us and Littlejohn Cooke dangle, and then the failed bid (Was it Milstein?), and then of course Snyder getting the team...
that ugly sequence really really hurt us. And we're still recovering from the Snyder hire, of course.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 12, 2007 2:37 PM
Not Snyder 'hire' but you know what I mean
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 12, 2007 2:38 PM
The Vikings did mess up their draft twice. The second time they did it intentionally when they drafted the DT Kevin Williams. The next 2-3 teams were not going to draft D-line so they figured they could sign him on the cheap at the #10 spot rather than #7. Funny as hell with teams sprinting up to the podium with their picks.

I think you are right on target. The protracted Estate issue combined with With the Danny and His Tazmania devil approach to ownership (fire all longterm employees, bring lackees and minions to do my bidding, since i can't fire the current coach i will give him an ultimatium chew him out within earshot of the players, him fire him when are 7-6 tell the interium coach to play Jeff George, hire Marty (ESPN FAV.) give him total control then fire him because he took total control,
that is the short version. Needless to say we have been a mess since the squire passed. The only sensible move Snyder has made has been to hire Gibbs. I am hopeful he can do what he said he would do put the franchise back to contention and respectibility.

2. Keeping Norv, firing Casserly

Here's a potentially interesting question: the 49ers fell from grace in a very similar fashion to us, not identical but very close: legendary coach retires after leading team to lengthy period of greatness, team undergoes painful ownership tussle, team more or less fades from relevance and suffers salary cap hell. Why aren't the Niners a national media punching bag the way the Skins seem to be?
Is it the success of the Bill Walsh coaching tree and 'his' West Coast offense? Is it that Montana and Young as photogenic posterboys make their memories more vivid somehow than those (apparently) anonymous Skins who won 3 of 4 SBs in a decade? Is it the annoying Skins fans like us? What's the deal?

My Top 5 Snyder Mistakes:
1. Having Vinny Cerrato as 'GM'
2. Firing Marty
3. Hiring Spurrier
4. Jeff George
5. Being a complete a$$ in general (this includes firing the long term employees, breaking stadium naming promise to Cook family, parking at FedEx, etc)
Posted by: Diesel | February 12, 2007 4:13 PM
The problems started before the Squire's unfortunate demise. There were three seasons between Gibbs' departure and JKC's death. The Skins stunk in all three. Gibbs had to have Desmond Howard. It was immediately apparent to all who saw him that he couldn't play WR. Gibbs then bails. Pettibone inherited a team with a bare cupboard courtesy of JJG. The Skins have been roaming the desert ever since.

Nate, good question. I've often posted my frustration with the media bias AGAINST the Redskins... seems very un-balanced... we're talking Fox News un-balanced here.
I think Snyder has pissed off too many key members of the media. He must have done something politically incorrect to all of ESPN (especially Len P), Peter King, Dr Z, Jimmy the Greek, etc.
This negativity in the media against the 'skins is probably the only thing keeping Monk out of the HOF.
Posted by: Diesel | February 12, 2007 4:18 PM
LH,
I disagree...not that those years werent hard, but that most teams ebb and flow especially after the run we had...I think if John Cooke had kept control he would have hired a football man to take over and right the ship...
The problem is snyder bringing in a certain culture and menatllity...and that has lead to the years of dispare...not the normal up down cycle of NFL franchises...
How did I forget hiring Spurrier in my list?!?!...Nice work Diesel/70 chip
Posted by: chris Larry | February 12, 2007 4:21 PM
LH, I see your point, but I think that's giving Beathard way too much credit. Sure, he gets a ton of credit, and I wish he'd stayed forever, but I don't think his leaving was the tipping point. I dunno, you make a really good argument.
But every team goes through ups and downs -- just like every team misses on draft picks, sometimes spectacularly -- and we had to expect a few down seasons after the great Gibbs left... but it seemed to me that we had no chance of arresting the post-Gibbs downswing and righting the ship because of the ownership fight, and we haven't had consistent success since then.

So it's just a coincidence that JJG's player personnel decisions during his current run have been bad also?
Here are the picks after Bethard's departure:
'90 - Andre Collins and Mo Eliwonibi (Brian Mitchell only impact pick)
'91 Bobby Wilson & Ricky Ervins (no impact picks)
'92 D Howard & Shane Collins (no impact picks)
'93 Tom Carter & Reggie Brooks (no impact picks unless you want to count Wychek who did his best work elsewhere)
The Super Bowl winning core was aging and moving on and Gibbs and Casserly didn't add anything to keep the team improving. More than an ebb was ahead.
This site has all of the 'Skins' drafts. Feel free to find a single difference maker chosen by Gibbs & Casserly.

LH, are you blaming Gibbs for everything that happened while he was away from the team? As I recall, he won a Super Bowl and then went back to the playoffs in the two seasons before his first retirement. Are you blaming him for what other people did with 'his' players after that?

It's revisonist history to suggest that Beathard's departure was the Jump the Shark moment for the franchise.
I believe the '91 Team was assembled largely through Plan B Free Agency, which was Casserley's work. Regardless, the '91 and '92 teams were the last gasp of the Gibbs era. St. Joe had to realize that had he stayed in '93, with a salary cap and free agency imminent, he would have lost many of the guys he built the team with. My guess is that if St. Joe had stayed, the '93 year would have been a rebuilding year anyhow (not that there wasn't precedent for that in the Gibbs I era: 1988 and 1989 were also rebuilding years).
It doesn't surprise me that it took a false start coach (Petitbon) and a rookie coach (Turner) four years to rebuild a team assembled by and for St. Joe's pre-free agency and salary cap philosophy. The 1999 team began something special, but in my mind the true Jump the Shark moment came in that offseason when "Mr." Snyder decided to bet on Jeff George, Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, et al. I thought Turner had built momentum and that 1999 squad really was fun to watch.
Coaches, quarterbacks, kickers, and front office folks have come and gone. There is one constant from 1999 onward. Guess who that is. As I've said before, I like "Mr." Snyder. As a businessman and a marketing guy, he is quite impressive. I love eccentric people, from any profession. As an NFL owner, though? Not so much.

For the 1 cent that it is worth, PFT is stating that the Giants have cut 3 players, Luke Petigout, Chad Morton, and the artist formerly known as Lavar. Take it with a grain of salt, and don't shoot the messenger.
Posted by: Greg(Boston) | February 12, 2007 4:55 PM
Desmond Howard is a red herring. He was the Heisman Trophy winner, a true St. Joe character guy, and a college football icon. Passing on him would have been equally ridiculed. In retrospect, it was a bad draft pick. But at the time, it made total sense. Teams have bad draft picks all the time, and the 'Skins record with first rounders since Gibbs I is probably average in the League (I'm sure someone can quote stats here, but I'm too lazy today)...

Beantown Greg- good stuff. I think there would have to an injury settlement with the Eastern Motors star to cut him because of his achilles tear.
Posted by: 4-12 | February 12, 2007 5:03 PM
Nate, he made the playoffs with players selected by someone else. He didn't bring in anyone to whom those guys could pass the baton. Gibbs choices are his legacy so him leaving doesn't absolve him of their lack of talent under someone else. My point is this: Gibbs saw the writing on the wall and bailed. He came back thinking with Snyder's fantasy football ways that he could buy a championship. The problem has been that he has done a terrible job at picking talent and that's what wins ballgames. 1983 through 1992 is gone and never to return as long as Gibbs is here. That's just my humble opinion.
Posted by: LH | February 12, 2007 5:03 PM
On Ryan Leaf: epic disaster in the NFL, no question about it. Hindsight is 20/20 though. Was there any indication during his college career that he would be a problem child in the pros? I'm asking, I don't know.
The kid could play. But he was a basket case. Just as with any profession, talent is only a modicum of what it takes to achieve success. Sure, you can't get to the top without talent. But you also can't get there without hard work, dedication, and the right attitude. Leaf failed on that second part, and failed spectacularly.
Same goes for Marinovich, though my memory is pretty fuzzy there...

If the Jints cut him, it's time for LaVar's redemption song: coming back to the burgundy and gold, sign for us with an incentive-laden contract that only guarantees vet minimum.
I don't see any potential issues with that, no issues from Gibbs, Snyder, Grilliams or LaVar himself.

Nate, even at vet minimum, an outside linebacker with no cartilage left in his knee is not going to be in good shape to compete with Lemar (yes, Lemar) and RockyMac at the the weak side position. Something tells me the Skins will have a new guy in the middle (not named Lemar).

LH,
Casserly added many good players to the team in plan B FA agency.
Fred stokes Starter
Tim Johnson Starter
Eric Williams Starter
Danny Copeland Starter
Brad Edwards Starter
Martin Mayhew Starter
Jumpy Geathers (best inside Pass rusher inthe NFL)
Thats most of starting D of the domminant 91 Team.
He did a good job overall and we won a championship with players he largely drafted or aquired. But it was a team built to win now, older and expensive, left us probbally in the worst position in the league heading into the new era of free agency.
We are all right on the demise of this team, the fall began shortly after that 91 season. The big point is we a legendary coach and owner go within a short period and we made many, many bad management and personnel decisions in a row with very few if any positve moves over the same period to offset them. long and short, all negative no positive from 93 to begin Gibbs II.
Posted by: Old School | February 12, 2007 5:13 PM
Nate- I think I remember an interview with Lavar where he said the coach he'd most like to play for is Marty. When asked what coach he'd least like to play for, he said Joe Gibbs. Lavar will live in this area, but he ain't gonna play for the 'Skins

"POSTED 3:47 p.m. EST; UPDATED 4:02 p.m. EST, February 12, 2007
GIANTS CHOP THREE
A league source tells us that the New York Giants have cut linebacker LaVar Arrington, offensive tackle Luke Petitgout, and running back Chad Morton.
Arrington gave up $4.4 million in earned but unpaid bonus money from the Redskins last year at this time for the ability to hit the free-agent market early. But his agents, the Postons, overpriced him, and he missed out on the early cash rush.
Arrington eventually signed a trumped-up seven-year, $49 million deal with the Giants, which was low on guarantees and high on incentives. A chronic knee problem marred the early stages of the season, and then he popped an Achilles' tendon and was lost for the year.
Petitgout, the team's starting left tackle at the start of 2006, fractured his leg on November 5 against the Bears and didn't return for the season. The Giants' first-round pick (19th overall) in 1999, Petitgout was under contract for the next two seasons, at salaries of $5 million per year.
Morton tore an ACL late in the season, the second such injury he has suffered in three years. He was signed through 2009, and was scheduled to earn a salary of $720,000 in 2007. "

As a kick returner not as a WR, the position St. Joe drafed him #4 to play.
And Diddy, Howard was all those things you said except he wasn't an NFL WR. He also had a terrible work ethic.

Nate
Many 49er factors
Walsh "genius image" and league influence, coaches he mentored kept his name in the game after he retired
Back to back HOF QB's, Greatest football player of alltime (rice)kept them high profile nationally.
Winning two more Bowls after walsh. retired
Their run was a pretty continus streak from 1981 thru 1995/96 thats like 14 yrs they were right there.
They had maybe two of the greatest teams of all time 84 & 94?
I agree with most here that the skins don't get the credit they deserve for the Gibbs I run. There are many factors we have hashed over, the non descript 3 QB's low profile coach, etc etc. We may have had something to argue the "Disrespect card" had we beat the Raiders, that would have given us back to back. But we got humiliated, and losing the way we did is huge.
So we were the second best team of the decade and rightfully nobody really cares about the second best team except redskin fans.

Posted by: dcsween | February 12, 2007 5:34 PM
Marty had this team turning in the right direction. That was a very hard first half of the season. He literally had to beat the Norv out of this team, and he did, and they won 8 straight, and the players respected him after that. There are a lot of jump the shark moments in the past 14 years, but that is definitely one of them. And of course the subsequent worst head coach hiring in NFL history. Spurrier was a joke.
"There is one constant from 1999 onward. Guess who that is."
No, not Snyder. He has made his mistakes, but he is a brilliant business man, and he has learned to step back and let the football guys do the football. The one negative constant here since 1999 is Vinny Cerrato. Bad management, decision after decision, and this guy is in every single decision. From George to Spurrier. It is time to see Cerrato go and major GM hire. Keep everything else constant.

The redskins.com website has started the "roster review" articles, which was one of the features I enjoyed this year. They talk about who's on the team, how they did, identify free agents and top draft picks, and let you vote. Today's article is about tight ends. Might make good discussion fodder for the RI blog.
On tight ends, I have two thoughts: (1) sign Cooley to a long term deal now and (2) sign Yoder again as the #2 so he can be the reliable Robert Royal-like goal-line target. OK another thought ... nothing Fauria did impressed me. OK another thought ... I did think Buck Ortega had an impressive preseason, should have kept him. Closing thought ... Skins are good at TE, so search undrafted free agency for Cooley version 2.0.

I have alwasy felt bad for Lavar and other great players that have wasted their career on the late 90 early 2000 Skins. Lavar probably being the biggest casualty. The team never settled around him. Different D coordinator every year. Different coaching situations constantly, different schemes. He never settled in. A big waste of what could have been a HOF player for the skins.

Old School, since posting about tight ends, I've been doing a little research on the Skins' recent signing of FA TE, Eric Edwards. He might be interesting ... until Leonard Pope stepped up, he was slated as the starter for Arizona (yes, I know, Arizona), but still, could be interesting b/c at 6'5", 257 lbs. and three years out, maybe HE could be ready to play ball.
Posted by: dcsween | February 12, 2007 6:05 PM
Monk
Disagree on Lavar, I was a big fan when we drafted him. But saw right away that would follow him throughtout, occassional big play but often the big mistake or the subtile (to us fans ) blown assisignment. He really didn't have any pass rush moves, easily blocked one on one he wasn't good in coverge. He could really stuff the run when he was in position and he made some bone crunching hits. he didn't provide any leadership, didn't lift the play of his teamates didn't work hard, didn't study. So the excuses about different coordinators is nonsense, he is LB play your assignment, tackle the ball carrier, simple in any defense.
The hype was bigger than he played. We all expected LT and he wasn't even Wilbur Marshall. He just never had that big an impact.
Posted by: Old School | February 12, 2007 6:09 PM
