I don't know what you meant by the comment about MJ - he definitely was not going to win here because HE (MJ) did not have it anymore when he was playing....and then he was fired from his management position. I admit to being distraught about that at the time and saying I would never watch the Wiz again....until I read a book about Jordan's Wizards days (and the way he treated Pollin)and totally changed my tune.

George also added that if anyone can post anything on a blog and people around the world can read it, we (BLOGGERS) in essence have just as much power as Wilbon and TK and they are being diminished...

I always find it strange when journalist/pundits etc get all riled up about forums like blogs where the *gasp* masses get to pontificate and put forth their views. Umm ain't that what a pluralistic democratic republic is all about?
Also it is quite clear to me that most of the core bloggers here are at least as smart if not smarter than 99% of the pundits. This isn't a poke at TK whom I love and think is great but at all the other blowhards.

P.S. I saw part of the Gibbs NASCAR presser late last night. Gibbs seemed really happy, and was laughing/giggling in that bizarre way he does sometimes. It was a little strange, and may be cause for some worry in Redskins Land (if you are one of those who don't want to see him leave here).

Possible worst case scenario: Gibbs decides to leave without notice; Grilliams gets promoted to HC/CEO for 2007 and someone who is super smart gets to run the defense instead. Grilliams gets fired after 1 year, making room for Cowher or Grimm in 2008.

Sometimes you just have to look a little harder to find the silver lining. : )

I saw the presser as well and Gibbs was joking about the Skins having a lousy season in that funny way of his. I see now why the Reaper does not talk to the press....one can't say anything without it being twisted in another direction.

While I agree with you (and Chris Larry) about ignoring the idiots, sometimes they go over the line and it's simply impossible.

Lisa, it is over the line, but there are only two possible solutions -- have Cyn Cyty monitor all entries (which will kill what's fun about this setup -- the interactivity -- and does it look like Cindy has a lot of extra time?) or shut the whole thing down.

My Five Guys Review:

Atmosphere: 50's look (no, not as nearly as creepy as all of 70's poconos).

Things to rember:
A. TAKE CASH!!!!!! cuz they don't take plastic.
3. They only have beef and potatoe products.
D. Only order ONE order of fries for every 3 people eating.
2. If you're taking out please rember to ask to triple bag it cuz the oil from the fries will ruin your nice seats.

What I had: had a regular burger which includes two patties (but they were thin enough for you to not really notice them). with mayo, ketchup, mustard, FRIED ONIONS, JALAPENOs, green shtuff, tomatoes. and fries.

It was good. Though I can't imagine ever eating it without those ingredients specifically the jalapenos. It's kinda like amWendy's burger. And of course King of All Burgers In-N-Out still stands alone by itself. But it did satisfy my cravings for a burger.

And of course i had this after my terps put a serious beatdown on Duke! woooooohooooo!!!!!! go terps! AND U AND U AND U AND U!

haven't caught up with anything...and have to get up early 5...so better go...see ya.

There is no way Joe is leaving now. They are still working their way up. A couple more pieces snap in place (management and players) and they are a championship team. You just have to believe that Joe can see and implement those pieces. If he does than I would love to pass the torch to Grilliams. The whole team has made mistakes, but if they can overcome and win than you know they have learned from them. Grilliams is brilliant, and I love his disciplinarian/old school style. Knock his ego down with 4-5 years of Gibbs and you could have a great HC. And talk about structure and continuity. That is what dynsasties are built of. I love this plan, Im sticking to it. Trust In Joe!

That contingency in Grilliams' contract -- the million bucks if he's not the next Lancers' HC -- was added when Snyder boosted his package to keep him from seriously considering other HC offers because Gibbs really wanted to keep him around.

And as happens sometimes when dudes who get paid and assured of outcomes, Grilliams went out and had an awful season by any measure (not that it's cause and effect, but that's what happened).

Like some of you, I believe Gibbs stays through the end of this contract barring problems with his own health. So two more seasons, which is an eternity in the NFL.

There is no way to predict what will happen when Gibbs leaves the team. It's all guesswork. The Grilliams poison pill will be of no consequence when the time comes to fill our HC vacancy. A couple of BIG variables are whether team president Gibbs will want to stick around in some capacity other than HC, AND if he'll want to name his successor, but again I don't know how to predict either of those based on what we know now.

4th, a Portis throwback is a Portis jersey done in the old style: dark maroon, w/ spears. I don't think the skins have played in them since the Spurrier days but you'd probably remember them by the helmets w/ the spears on 'em.

Just catching up on earlier the posts about TK and 'Diesel Man'... pretty funny, but I doubt Tony reads this blog and concentrates on anything I post. Would you rather a coach that gets run over like Norv Turner. Biggest difference between Gibbs 1 and Gibbs 2 is that Gibbs 2 is softer, and it shows in the team's play. Nothing wrong with kicking chairs.

Diesel, national TV does count. Unless, under subclause F of paragraph 3 of Section 2, he's asking you what you would do with the #6 pick. That type of discussion is deemed to be 'valueless', and is not deducted.
Unless of course you preface your comments with "long time/first time", and ask how he's doing. Then the minutes are deducted from your overall lifespan.

The difference between Gibbs I and Gibbs II is Playa's. Gibbs I had lots them, there were ones that had talent, and they were over acheivers.Gibbs II almost no talent on (defense) and lots of under acheivers.The coaches are fine they all have track records of success. This is a QB led league, if have one, you have a chance to build something.

Did anyone watch America's Game last night on the network. Fans voted the top twenty all time superbowl teams, 85 Bears were numerio uno. Best single season team I ever saw, that show really captured the ferocity in which that team got after it. I can honestly say that team was and is the only NFL team I ever saw other teams afraid to play. I mean you could tell very early in lots of their games the other team wanted no part of them. The program reminded me of their offical comming out party week 11 national TV against Dallas in Dallas good (team at the time). I remember watching that game and thinking I may actually watch some killed in a Football Game. From the moment the game started until it was over 44-0, you knew you were watching something the league had not seen before.It wasn't just the sacks I think they had 8 that day, it was total mayhem and fear they created in the opponent and the stadium (Dallas fans were probbally thinking like me, someone may die out here today).

In any case, real or imaginary TK, Gibbs 1 was able to get good talent in the 80s, due to :1) the lack of salary cap; 2) Mr. Cooke's willingness to open his checkbook as necessary; 3) B. Beathard's outstanding work in identifying talent in early FA ventures, such as the demise of the USFL/WFL.

Because the UFA system did not yet exist, good talent could be retained at will; i.e. you didn't lose good players after they developed to unrestricted free agency. With Beathard's initial selection prowess, the Gibbs 1 Redskins were a very talented group.

KITTANNING, Pa. (AP) -- A woman pleaded guilty Monday to trying
to cut a fetus from her neighbor's womb.
Peggy Jo Conner, 39, of Manor Township, pleaded guilty to
attempted homicide, aggravated assault and kidnapping in the attack
on Valerie Oskin, which authorities said was a plot to steal
Oskin's baby and keep it as her own.
The plea came as Conner's trial was scheduled to begin Monday in
Armstrong County.
Authorities accused Conner of attacking Oskin on Oct. 13, 2005,
inside her home with a baseball bat, and then driving Oskin to a
remote location, where she used a razor knife to cut open Oskin's
abdomen in an effort to remove her unborn baby.
Oskin and the baby survived after a boy on an all-terrain
vehicle spotted the women in a clearing and told his father, who
summoned police to the scene.
The baby was delivered by emergency Caesarean section and was
put up for adoption, which had been Oskin's intention even before
she was attacked.
Conner initially had been charged with two counts of attempted
homicide, but prosecutors withdrew the charge that alleged Conner
intended to kill the unborn baby.

TW's bringing it strong to the mike -- err, blog -- but I have no additional insight into Gibbs I's success. The only thing that comes to mind is that Gibbs I did it without a marquee QB, and I don't think you can get away with that anymore. It made sense to hedge your bets when the QB was a normal player and could be touched by the other team. Now, a reasonably good QB can be expected to start the whole season.

So TW, give us a topic. You have the conch.

If his LOA only runs until mid March, this isn't a major issue. However, ignoring family/personal issues involved, I'd be very surprised if all of the legal issues of both of son's sons cases would have ended by mid-March, so I'm somewhat concerned that the LOA could stretch out for longer than the initial announcement.

I think what we'd all like to see is a little more of 'old school Joe' from training camp forward. A little more bark, a little more bite. Feeling like he is not just 'managing' but in control of the team, especially the offense.

The fall began once Bethard left. Gibbs began to have a say in personnel and the team started to make bad decisions. Gibbs, like Noah, Moses, Joseph and David before him, knew bad times were ahead and got the heck out of town. I'm voting for the Squire's passing as the turning point for the franchise.

The Vikings did mess up their draft twice. The second time they did it intentionally when they drafted the DT Kevin Williams. The next 2-3 teams were not going to draft D-line so they figured they could sign him on the cheap at the #10 spot rather than #7. I think you are right on target. The protracted Estate issue combined with With the Danny and His Tazmania devil approach to ownership (fire all longterm employees, bring lackees and minions to do my bidding,since i can't fire the current coach i will give him an ultimatium chew him out within earshot of the players, him fire him when are 7-6 tell the interium coach to play Jeff George, hire Marty (ESPN FAV.) give him total control then fire him because he took total control,

Here's a potentially interesting question: the 49ers fell from grace in a very similar fashion to us, not identical but very close: legendary coach retires after leading team to lengthy period of greatness, team undergoes painful ownership tussle, team more or less fades from relevance and suffers salary cap hell. The problems started before the Squire's unfortunate demise. There were three seasons between Gibbs' departure and JKC's death. The Skins stunk in all three. Gibbs had to have Desmond Howard. It was immediately apparent to all who saw him that he couldn't play WR. Gibbs then bails. Pettibone inherited a team with a bare cupboard courtesy of JJG. The Skins have been roaming the desert ever since.

Nate, good question. I've often posted my frustration with the media bias AGAINST the Redskins... seems very un-balanced... we're talking Fox News un-balanced here.
I think Snyder has pissed off too many key members of the media. He must have done something politically incorrect to all of ESPN (especially Len P), Peter King, Dr Z, Jimmy the Greek, etc.
This negativity in the media against the 'skins is probably the only thing keeping Monk out of the HOF.

LH, I see your point, but I think that's giving Beathard way too much credit. Sure, he gets a ton of credit, and I wish he'd stayed forever, but I don't think his leaving was the tipping point. I dunno, you make a really good argument.

But every team goes through ups and downs -- just like every team misses on draft picks, sometimes spectacularly -- and we had to expect a few down seasons after the great Gibbs left... but it seemed to me that we had no chance of arresting the post-Gibbs downswing and righting the ship because of the ownership fight, and we haven't had consistent success since then.

It's revisonist history to suggest that Beathard's departure was the Jump the Shark moment for the franchise.

I believe the '91 Team was assembled largely through Plan B Free Agency, which was Casserley's work. Regardless, the '91 and '92 teams were the last gasp of the Gibbs era. St. Joe had to realize that had he stayed in '93, with a salary cap and free agency imminent, he would have lost many of the guys he built the team with. My guess is that if St. Joe had stayed, the '93 year would have been a rebuilding year anyhow (not that there wasn't precedent for that in the Gibbs I era: 1988 and 1989 were also rebuilding years).

It doesn't surprise me that it took a false start coach (Petitbon) and a rookie coach (Turner) four years to rebuild a team assembled by and for St. Joe's pre-free agency and salary cap philosophy. The 1999 team began something special, but in my mind the true Jump the Shark moment came in that offseason when "Mr." Snyder decided to bet on Jeff George, Bruce Smith, Deion Sanders, et al. I thought Turner had built momentum and that 1999 squad really was fun to watch.

Coaches, quarterbacks, kickers, and front office folks have come and gone. There is one constant from 1999 onward. Guess who that is. As I've said before, I like "Mr." Snyder. As a businessman and a marketing guy, he is quite impressive. I love eccentric people, from any profession. As an NFL owner, though? Not so much.

For the 1 cent that it is worth, PFT is stating that the Giants have cut 3 players, Luke Petigout, Chad Morton, and the artist formerly known as Lavar. Take it with a grain of salt, and don't shoot the messenger.

Desmond Howard is a red herring. He was the Heisman Trophy winner, a true St. Joe character guy, and a college football icon. Passing on him would have been equally ridiculed. In retrospect, it was a bad draft pick. But at the time, it made total sense. Teams have bad draft picks all the time, and the 'Skins record with first rounders since Gibbs I is probably average in the League (I'm sure someone can quote stats here, but I'm too lazy today)...

Beantown Greg- good stuff. I think there would have to an injury settlement with the Eastern Motors star to cut him because of his achilles tear.

Nate, he made the playoffs with players selected by someone else. He didn't bring in anyone to whom those guys could pass the baton. Gibbs choices are his legacy so him leaving doesn't absolve him of their lack of talent under someone else. My point is this: Gibbs saw the writing on the wall and bailed. He came back thinking with Snyder's fantasy football ways that he could buy a championship. The problem has been that he has done a terrible job at picking talent and that's what wins ballgames. 1983 through 1992 is gone and never to return as long as Gibbs is here. That's just my humble opinion.

On Ryan Leaf: epic disaster in the NFL, no question about it. Hindsight is 20/20 though. Was there any indication during his college career that he would be a problem child in the pros? I'm asking, I don't know.

The kid could play. But he was a basket case. Just as with any profession, talent is only a modicum of what it takes to achieve success. Sure, you can't get to the top without talent. But you also can't get there without hard work, dedication, and the right attitude. Leaf failed on that second part, and failed spectacularly.

Same goes for Marinovich, though my memory is pretty fuzzy there...

He did a good job overall and we won a championship with players he largely drafted or aquired. But it was a team built to win now, older and expensive, left us probbally in the worst position in the league heading into the new era of free agency.

We are all right on the demise of this team, the fall began shortly after that 91 season. The big point is we a legendary coach and owner go within a short period and we made many, many bad management and personnel decisions in a row with very few if any positve moves over the same period to offset them. long and short, all negative no positive from 93 to begin Gibbs II.

A league source tells us that the New York Giants have cut linebacker LaVar Arrington, offensive tackle Luke Petitgout, and running back Chad Morton.

Arrington gave up $4.4 million in earned but unpaid bonus money from the Redskins last year at this time for the ability to hit the free-agent market early. But his agents, the Postons, overpriced him, and he missed out on the early cash rush.

Arrington eventually signed a trumped-up seven-year, $49 million deal with the Giants, which was low on guarantees and high on incentives. A chronic knee problem marred the early stages of the season, and then he popped an Achilles' tendon and was lost for the year.

Petitgout, the team's starting left tackle at the start of 2006, fractured his leg on November 5 against the Bears and didn't return for the season. The Giants' first-round pick (19th overall) in 1999, Petitgout was under contract for the next two seasons, at salaries of $5 million per year.

Morton tore an ACL late in the season, the second such injury he has suffered in three years. He was signed through 2009, and was scheduled to earn a salary of $720,000 in 2007. "

I agree with most here that the skins don't get the credit they deserve for the Gibbs I run. There are many factors we have hashed over, the non descript 3 QB's low profile coach,etc etc. We may have had something to argue the "Disrespect card" had we beat the Raiders, that would have given us back to back. But we got humiliated, and losing the way we did is huge.

So we were the second best team of the decade and rightfully nobody really cares about the second best team except redskin fans.

Marty had this team turning in the right direction. That was a very hard first half of the season. He literally had to beat the Norv out of this team, and he did, and they won 8 straight, and the players respected him after that. There are a lot of jump the shark moments in the past 14 years, but that is definitely one of them. And of course the subsequent worst head coach hiring in NFL history. Spurrier was a joke.

No, not Snyder. He has made his mistakes, but he is a brilliant business man, and he has learned to step back and let the football guys do the football. The one negative constant here since 1999 is Vinny Cerrato. Bad management, decision after decision, and this guy is in every single decision. From George to Spurrier. It is time to see Cerrato go and major GM hire. Keep everything else constant.

Re: Desmond Howard. Gibbs has always taken the blame for that one. He wanted Howard badly. After his very 1st practice with the team, Gibbs went to JKC and said something to the effect of: I blew it. He can't play WR in this league.

They talk about who's on the team, how they did, identify free agents and top draft picks, and let you vote. Today's article is about tight ends. Might make good discussion fodder for the RI blog.

On tight ends, I have two thoughts: (1) sign Cooley to a long term deal now and (2) sign Yoder again as the #2 so he can be the reliable Robert Royal-like goal-line target. OK another thought ... nothing Fauria did impressed me. OK another thought ... I did think Buck Ortega had an impressive preseason, should have kept him. Closing thought ... Skins are good at TE, so search undrafted free agency for Cooley version 2.0.

I have alwasy felt bad for Lavar and other great players that have wasted their career on the late 90 early 2000 Skins. Lavar probably being the biggest casualty. The team never settled around him. Different D coordinator every year. Different coaching situations constantly, different schemes. He never settled in. A big waste of what could have been a HOF player for the skins.

Old School, since posting about tight ends, I've been doing a little research on the Skins' recent signing of FA TE, Eric Edwards. He might be interesting ... until Leonard Pope stepped up, he was slated as the starter for Arizona (yes, I know, Arizona), but still, could be interesting b/c at 6'5", 257 lbs. and three years out, maybe HE could be ready to play ball.

Disagree on Lavar, I was a big fan when we drafted him. But saw right away that would follow him throughtout, occassional big play but often the big mistake or the subtile (to us fans ) blown assisignment.He really didn't have any pass rush moves, easily blocked one on one he wasn't good in coverge. He could really stuff the run when he was in position and he made some bone crunching hits. he didn't provide any leadership, didn't lift the play of his teamates didn't work hard, didn't study. So the excuses about different coordinators is nonsense, he is LB play your assignment, tackle the ball carrier, simple in any defense.

The hype was bigger than he played. We all expected LT and he wasn't even Wilbur Marshall. He just never had that big an impact.

Personally, I would love to see Lavar come back....but like everyone else has stated...it ain't happening.

Funny, though....Lavar made remarks at the beginning of the season last year about what a classy organization the Giants were....wonder what he thinks now?
