LaVarGate 2 - Electric Boogaloo

I got a handful of emails today about LaVar possibly coming back to DC. Gotta say, this would be the ultimate longshot to me. I am still waiting to hear back from a mutual friend I have with LaVar, but regardless of his thoughts I don't see this happening for myriad reasons.

The Skins don't do business with the Postons - even on vet. minimum contracts it seems - and I can't see LaVar wanting to come back here. After the clashes between him and the coaches and training staff and the owner, again, can't see it. It goes way deeper than just Dale Lindsey as well - although he was a central figure in LaVarGate - and I can't see The Snyder bringing him back.

Then there are the health issues as well. And you have to wonder about LaVar coming back here to be the No. 5 LB, even if he was scrounging for a job.

Again, I would be stunned. Nevertheless, Howard and I will sniff around in the weeks and months to come, but, LaVar Lovers, I wouldn't bank on it. As for me, I'm all for it, because I had a blast shooting the bull with the dude and he was a killer quote, but I can't see it happening.

Randoms: Chatted with Mark Brunell for a few minutes today. Will write a short brief about it in the Wed. paper, but basically he said he still has some hope that he could get a chance to compete for a starting job someplace, but knows it will be tough. Barring that, he says DC is the only place he wants to back-up and he hopes his agents can work out a new deal with the Skins in the next few weeks. He figures the process could be resolved in a fortnight or so (some Olde English for y'all) ... From what I have heard, Skins have not approached Daniels or Wynn about a restructuring to this point. Not entirely sure what to make of that, although my gut reaction is that it might not bode well for them surviving March cuts. Again, just a guess there.

Bring Lavar back. If Williams is serious about showing that he's "understood" the mistakes he's made, he should find a role for Lavar. Who else are we going to spend our $$$ on? Besides, doesn't The Danny have all those leftover 56 jerseys to sell?

Posted by: Icarus | February 13, 2007 1:37 PM

Brunell's "chance" of being a starter here again are about 1 in a million. He sounds a lot like Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber... You all know the line.

Unless, of course, JCambell gets on a motorcycle without a helmet and pulls a Cheeselessburger.

I think the 'Skins are ready to part ways with either Wynn or Daniels but not both. They're both well over the hill and have had big time injury problems. Why take the cap hit later for these guys?

Plus, the general consensus is that the skins will take a pass rushing DE. Probably bodes better for Wynn because he is better against the run and will likely be cheaper to restructure.

Posted by: evan | February 13, 2007 1:39 PM

"...he said he still has some hope that he could get a chance to compete for a starting job someplace, but knows it will be tough."

Is he planning on going to graduate school at a DIII college? Or perhaps back to high school for a post-graduate year?

Maybe then... but otherwise we'll see you next year holding a clipboard, Mark.

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | February 13, 2007 1:39 PM

Why are we talking about OLB. That is the only position on the team that actually has good depth. Marshall or Rocky will be sitting the bench.

Lavar will generate interest somewhere and will have a legit shot at a starting job. I just don't see that happening here. You would be stupid to get rid of Rocky and Marshall provides you depth at all three LB positions. Hes invalauable.

Posted by: Skinz | February 13, 2007 1:40 PM

"Why take the cap hit later for these guys?"

Unfortunately, these guys are both huge locker room presences, from everything that I've read. Those are tough guys to cut, for many reasons. I agree though, Wynn can play DT if need be (I think), so he's gotta be more important than Daniels.

Maybe Brunell can go start for the Texans. I hear they're looking for a new QB, and we all know he plays well there...

...against their defense. But that's a minor detail. It'll all work itself out.

Posted by: charlie | February 13, 2007 2:04 PM

If there was a football league which did not allow the forward pass, Brunell would excel.

We have good depth at OLB so long as Marcus Washington recovers and returns to the form of 2 years ago.

On Brunell, when he was running the practice squad to prep the Skins' starting defense against Brees, seemed like he earned a chance to carry clipboard here. [Can't be too many practice squads with that sort of experience behind the center.]

Could someone remind me about when the next cap deadline is, and the reasons for cutting guys before that deadline? Is it that cutting them now (or soon) accelerates bonuses so that it counts against THIS (past season's) cap year? And, if so, aren't the Skins only like a million dollars under that cap?

No Way Lavar can come back. He's still a Rockstar and we draw too much controversary. The 2nd time around is never eva as good as the 1st. Just ask Gibbs 2.4. I would def like MB to stay as a back-up ONLY. .....

Get rid of all these old farts. Bring some young bloods. We need Adalius Thomas as our MLB. Pick up Smoot if he is available, otherwise go for Jamal Fletcher (lions), Phillip Buchanon (TB), or Ricky Manning Jr(C).

Adalius Thomas
Position: Linebacker/Defensive End
Experience: 7

I don't qualify a 7 year vet as "young blood", and as a 'tweener, I don't think he'd make a very good MLB.

Wow what a strange couple of blog days. Some outstanding fubol stuff and then usual hilarity with peeploggers and then there is all the random crap from newbies who apparently have anger/aggression/boredom issues.

Okay so I confess my research (that hopefully none of you actually remembers cause well it's not that cool) was limited, severely.

Last year's sixth pick was Vernon Davis TE to 49ers and he got a $25 million contract after a holdout. So it strikes me we have to shell out at least that much for our pick. So what does that mean for our cap and FA signings?

Posted by: sflancer | February 13, 2007 4:02 PM

Would peeps take back LaVar if he agreed to play for a vet minimum? Brunell should campaign for an AFL team in DC so he can start there. Or that new spring league the AAFL that they are gonna start in 08.

He also said LaVar is taking the release in stride even if he is somewhat stunned by it.

Drafting is an Imperfect Science, Part 14

Charlie Casserly proved once again in the 2000 NFL draft that identifying future NFL stars is probably not his best skill set. A review of this list will prove he has lots of company in that regard.

1 Cleveland Courtney Brown DE PSU
2 Washington LaVar Arrington OLB PSU
3 Washington Chris Samuels T Alabama
4 Cincinnati Peter Warrick WR FSU
5 Baltimore Jamal Lewis RB Tennessee
6 Philadelphia Corey Simon DT FSU
7 Arizona Thomas Jones RB Virginia
8 Pittsburgh Plaxico Burress WR Michigan State
9 Chicago Brian Urlacher MLB New Mexico
10 Baltimore Travis Taylor WR Florida
11 N.Y. Giants Ron Dayne RB Wisconsin
12 N.Y. Jets Shaun Ellis DE Tennessee
13 N.Y. Jets John Abraham DE South Carolina
14 Green Bay Bubba Franks TE Miami
15 Denver Deltha O'Neal CB California
16 San Francisco Julian Peterson OLB Michigan State
17 Oakland Sebastian Janikowski K FSU
18 N.Y. Jets Chad Pennington QB Marshall
19 Seattle Shaun Alexander RB Alabama
20 Detroit Stockar McDougle T Oklahoma
21 Kansas City Sylvester Morris WR Jackson State
22 Seattle Chris McIntosh T Wisconsin
23 Carolina Rashard Anderson CB Jackson State
24 San Francisco Ahmed Plummer CB Ohio St
25 Minnesota Chris Hovan DT Boston College
26 Buffalo Erik Flowers DE Arizona State
27 N.Y. Jets Anthony Becht TE West Virginia
28 Indianapolis Rob Morris MLB BYU
29 Jacksonville R. Jay Soward WR USC
30 Tennessee Keith Bulluck OLB Syracuse
31 St. Louis Trung Canidate RB Arizona

Just a few other notables from that same year:

2nd Round

47 Oakland Jerry Porter WR West Virginia

5th Round

149 Green Bay Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila DE San Diego State

6th Round

186 Baltimore Adalius Thomas OLB Southern Mississippi

199 New England Tom Brady QB Michigan

Imagine having Brady, Urlacher, Adalius Thomas, John Abraham, KGB and Porter as Redskins for the past six years.

It could have happened.

that $25 million is his total contract. probably quite cap friendly in the first couuple years. same way skins do contracts with lots of guaranteed money, and big base salaries at the tail end that the player will never see

Hello, lancer. Agree that there is lot of anger up here, an unpleasant new undercurrent. I hate to call someone with the good taste to choose the moniker 'riggo' a troll, but so it is.

LaVar ain't coming back. I was joking when I posted about him coming back. Wrong on every level: owner, agent, player, coaches, injury history, position needs... I loved LaVar's first few seasons before the injury/doghouse period, even when he made maddening mistakes, but he's not coming back here, and we don't need him.

A torn Achilles tendon may be one of the most difficult injuries to come back from in the NFL. Most careers are ended by this injury.

Even if LaVar can come back from it, it will probably be 2008 before he is back to his previous form. That is probably why the Giants cut him.

How much you wanna bet they sign a MLB (Fletcher) and CB (Samuel) with skills below that of Pierce and Smoot, and pay them more than Washington and Springs?

Only Vinny Cerrato could come up with a plan like this... geez it pisses me off just thinking about it.

Regarding Brunell, I believe Jason said Brunell "hopes that he could get a chance to compete for a starting job someplace" - he did not mean with the Skins. If that does not happen (and it won't) he is content to stay with the Skins as backup.

Posted by: Lisa | February 13, 2007 4:56 PM

That was one of my unspoken points, Greg (Boston) - some teams do draft much better than others, year after year. The Jets also drafted L. Coles that year in round 3. A pretty good year for them overall.

What's interesting is that some teams that drafted poorly in 2000 seem to do so consistently. For many of them, the saying, "even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn" seems to be the rule. No one may ever reach the new standard set by Matt Millen in recent years, however.

Speaking of blind squirrels, where did ESPN find Mel Kiper? It's hard to believe a guy can be so wrong so often and stay employed.

Diesel/70 chip -

"the grass is always greener"

Pierce was obviously a major evaluation error by G. Williams, whose "plug'n'play" concept just doesn't work consistently. (Neither did Microsoft's.)

It's debatable whether Smoot is better than Asante Samuel, but Smoot hasn't shown much with the Vikings. He lost his starting job there, and has been shown to be "not worth the price". Who knows - that may be a scheme issue and he might have done much better staying in DC. But thanks to G. Williams and Vinny, we will never know.

Based on recent past performance, it is almost a given that any FA who signs with the Redskins will be a bust, and any FA who leaves the Redskins will be a star. There is no greater argument for the Redskins to ignore the Free Agency period every year and concentrate on re-signing their own players.

One thing to bear in mind with all our talk about the very necessary defensive personnel work this offseason: we have reason to believe the offense will be better at the start of this season than it was at the start of last season.

Soupy is the entrenched starter, Saunders has a year under his belt working with all the key guys, and Gibbs and Saunders we hope have reached a handshake agreement on what constitutes Redskin football. And if we sign Dockery our whole veteran line will be back.

I am assuming that if our offense is just a bit better at sustaining drives and scoring points -- and we have every reason to hope it will be -- our defense will "improve" accordingly since they won't have as much pressure on them each game.

With the poor job of player evaluations done by Vinny C, we are better off keeping what we have... at least that way we can build some continuity... I think continuity is the key ingredient to success on the o-line, so here's hoping we see an announcement soon saying that we re-signed Dockery.

I'm late on this but I think Marty Schotty got the boot because of the playoff curse. He never even made it to an SB much less having a chance to lose one.

Also my conspiracy theory personality leads me to believe they must have someone waiting in the wings whose more or less unofficially agreed to take the job.

Posted by: sflancer | February 13, 2007 5:38 PM

Holy shti! 1" of snow!! It must be full mayhem!

Cyn Cyty are you under your desk with a hurricane lamp, a sleeping bag, a bucket of Popeyes and some Thuderbird?

Posted by: sflancer | February 13, 2007 5:46 PM

sflancer, I agree, firing Marty right after the loss (a month ago) would have been fine with me, firing him now after both coordinators and other top coaches have left looks like a tantrum. A Snyder-esque tantrum, I might add. Unless they have a Secret Plan, that is.

I bet they don't have a secret plan or coach-in-waiting and hire someone un-inspiring like Norv Turner. That means flushing a lot of momentum (however frustrated) down the tubes.

Wait, who was left over after the hiring spree? Ron Rivera? Other guys?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 13, 2007 5:49 PM

I heard today that Marty got the boot because he told AJ Smith he wanted to hire Kurt as DCoord and Smith said no. Marty took it to Spanos who turned all Donald Trump in the board room on Marty.

Firing Marty at this point makes no sense whatsoever. That team has no coaching continuity. They have a young QB who is now likely going to have to play in a new system. Will the new defensive coach run the 3-4? This seems pretty mindless to me considering they could have done it a month ago.

Posted by: Lisa | February 13, 2007 5:58 PM

I guess I figured SD had to have a secret plan because this is a colossally dumb move, even dumber than what Snyder has ever done except . . . Jeff George and Spurrier. Again no way to verify my awesome sagacity but I said to anyone who cared that hiring Spurrier would be a disaster.

Those two are on my shark jumping list for the franchise along with not bouncing Westbrook after the Davis incident, Howard draft, Cooke family feud and I gotta say building FedEx.

Posted by: sflancer | February 13, 2007 5:59 PM

sflancer, following up on two of your choice ignominious moments from Lancers' history...

If Westbrook doesn't humiliate Davis that day on the practice field, maybe Davis doesn't redouble his efforts to become a top-flight player. Within a few years he was a great rusher for us!

New stadium outside DC was also Sharon Pratt Dixon Kelly Fletcher-Baker's fault, not just Cooke's. He paid for the stadium his own self! DC gov't should never ever have allowed a little tiff to result in the team leaving. For shame!

Hey everyone North Korea has agreed to shut down nukes program!

Tune in tomorrow when Daniel Snyder agrees to hire a GM!

Oh and cake and ice cream for everyone!

BTW - Happiest of happy birthdays to Chloe J-La!

Nate - agreed on both counts. I think you bounce Westbrook because he's wasn't a proven asset and that's gotta be locker room poison.

The whole stadium thing still makes me sick to this day. Stupid DC politics!

skinswest- what type road bike did you get? I've been riding my hybrid for a while, but it's about done with it's usefulness. I do all my miles on paved roads now, so it's time to upgrade. any suggestions?

Posted by: 4-12 | February 9, 2007 08:05 PM

Sorry, it's been hectic out here. I hit a sale at REI and got a 2006 Novara Divano - a decent slightly above entry level road bike. Had been doing all mountain biking out here (Colorado) which is great but wanted to get into road riding also. Now if Spring could just hurry up and get here.

LaVar will never come back - but if he were so inclined maybe they could stick him at MLB and just tell him "Go kill the guy with the ball!" Of course there's no way Double G would want him organizing his D. Fun thought though.

Way to bring the draft data Mole.

We manage to keep the wrong guys, let the wrong guys leave, draft the wrong guys, sign the wrong guys, and still keep the people doing all these wrong things.

Does that cover it.

Why he's the Man ...
The Pro Bowl ... it's without question the dullest, most godawful of All-Star events, and that's why most of America barely even bothers to watch the highlights.

On Sunday, however, there was one isolated moment of awesomeness in this year's Pro Bowl. In case you missed it, in the third quarter AFC coach Bill Belichick called for a fake punt on fourth and seven. Punter Brian Moorman swept right with the ball, and Redskins free safety Sean Taylor laid a hit on him that rattled teeth all the way back to the continent. Of course, words fail when trying to impart the viciousness of this blow, so why do you just have yourselves a look?

Ouch, right?

Props to Moorman for popping back up and even congratulating Taylor on the hit. But most of the props must go to Taylor himself for managing to do the impossible -- make the Pro Bowl compelling, even for a few seconds.

Heck, that wasn't that only dose of punishment Taylor administered that day; in the first half he rattled the bones of Reggie Wayne and Andre Johnson, both of whom, it must be noted, are former teammates of Taylor's at Miami.

So for becoming possessed with the spirit of Jack Tatum and for making the Pro Bowl somehow tolerable, we call Sean Taylor the Man for this week.

Posted by: 4th | February 13, 2007 6:10 PM

What he's done ...
Yeah, Taylor's been doling out the punishment for years. That's why his 'Skins teammates have nicknamed him "Meast" -- which is drawn from the incontrovertible fact that Taylor is half man, half beast.

Since being drafted with the fifth overall pick of 2004 and signing a seven-year, $18-million pact, Taylor has emerged as one of the best DBs in the league. So it's little surprise he was named to this year's NFC Pro Bowl squad.

As mentioned, he's a product of the U, but before that Taylor was a standout running back for Gulliver Prep in Miami. His senior year, Taylor rushed for 1,300 yards and set a Florida state record by tallying 44 rushing TDs on the season. Coming out of Gulliver, Taylor was one of the top recruits in the country, but opted to stay at home and attend Miami. Such were his abilities that Taylor became one of only four true freshmen to play for Miami's 2001 national championship team. After three season at the U, consensus first-team All-America honors and a Big East Defensive Player of the Year award, Taylor took his act to the NFL.

Wide receivers have been smarting ever since.

Thanks for all the nice words fam. Got to laugh at everyone trying to hook Lisa and I up.

Posted by: jm220 | February 13, 2007 6:12 PM

What he'll do ...

Taylor will continue dishing out the vigilante justice, and he and uber-annoying agent Drew Rosenhaus will continue agitating for a new contract. But no matter what happens, we'll always be fond of Taylor for a certain act of senseless violence in the Pro Bowl.

Viva la senseless acts of violence in the Pro Bowl! Viva la Sean Taylor!

"The Dolphins have long admired Brady Quinn, who is working with Shea in Phoenix. Under former coach Nick Saban, the Dolphins spent time looking at Quinn last year before he opted to return to Notre Dame for his senior season. Though General Manager Randy Mueller now calls the shots in regard to personnel, the Dolphins remain intrigued. Quinn will likely be gone when the Dolphins make their first-round pick at No. 9. But there is talk among NFL scouts that he could fall in the draft because of his lack of success in big games. The Dolphins, who also might consider trading up in the draft, likely know a lot more about Quinn's strengths and weaknesses."

We gotta sucker these guys into trading up.....

More on Marty: Apparently Smith didn't want to give other teams permission to talk to SD's assistants but he left it up to Marty and we all know what happened as a result. Smith got a case of the ass about this and said he was going to have a say in assistant hires. Marty said on ESPNews that given the timing that his wanting to hire his bro played a role in his termination.

I just saw Sport Center's take on the 2007-08 Skins. They think our season will depend on Campbell and overall were positive - which can be scary since they predicted us to possibly go to the Super Bowl this year. However, one of the guys said we will be better but will not win the NFC East.

4th, the thing that leaped out from your Dr. Quinn, Medicine QB post was that the Fins are picking three spots behind us. Three spots!

How were they three spots better than us? They had a horrible year, they were one of the biggest busts of the season, relative to pre-season hype!

Oh, right... we had a horrible year and were also one of the biggest disappointments of the season.

But still, three spots better! Ugh. Last season sucked.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 13, 2007 7:10 PM

Lisa, they're playing right into our hands. No hype, no expectations, no coverage... and then POW right in the kisser! We go 12-4 with a huge chip on our shoulder, and march into the playoffs once more!

They're not booing, they're saying "Sooouuuuupy!"

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 13, 2007 7:13 PM

Lisa, if that to you was positive, after what you saw of them this yr and you think it all depends on Campbell then you are Queen spin.31st in D and at the bottom in most categorys not a player or 2 away!

Posted by: cliff | February 13, 2007 7:14 PM

Take Salisbury's comments with a grain of salt. Guy is a jakeass.

Michael Smith was the last guy who said they will be better but not win the East. What's that mean 6-10, 7-9??? I can see 8-8 unless JC turns out to be the shti.

In my humble opinion these guys don't know anymore than the majority of people who post here.

Dorf,

You had a day off for snow? Gotta be kidding me. There were only light flakes this morning that died and melted when they hit the ground. My office got off early (3:00 pm) due to the "wintry mix" but it blows my mind that any place of business was actually closed today.

I for one am glad that Sports Center did not have us winning it all. Truth of the matter is....they don't know anything. Especially at this point. Last season they had Carolina, Miami, Redskins, etc. as contenders with NO and the Jets as bottom dwellers.....

Posted by: Lisa | February 13, 2007 7:18 PM

cliff, cdubb, I joke around up here with goofy predictions (12-4) but I'm with Lisa in the guarded optimism for '07. We're choosing to focus on the possible positive outcomes rather than the possible negatives. It's refreshing.

Lads, I suggest you join us among the Pollyannas. Just try it. It's easy to mope around and act like all is lost before the season has even begun. Challenge yourselves to be positive and upbeat about the next season. Come on, join us on the light side.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 13, 2007 7:21 PM

Next year, the Skins defense will be better if only because 1) Gggrrr is at the least a half decent/good defensive coord. and 2) with all the players that remain, they have learned what to expect from the coaches and there just won't be the drama (as long as they don't bring in too many divas) like there was last year.

Anyways, if you're at the bottom the percentages say that you can only go up.

Posted by: charlie | February 13, 2007 7:25 PM

charlie, don't forget the other possibility... you can stay at the bottom.

But again, I'm choosing to focus on the positives, and I agree that our D should be better in '07.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | February 13, 2007 7:35 PM

Actually, I reverse my earlier position about SD being stupid about letting Big Schott go so late. If they fired him earlier then he might have gone to Dallas. (Sigh of relief!)

Posted by: charlie | February 13, 2007 7:35 PM

charlie what makes you think Wade going wasnt worse, since AJ Smith wanted him all along.AJ is considered one of the best GMs.

Posted by: cliff | February 13, 2007 7:44 PM

Lemar loosk to bea situational guy next year, with Marcus coming off majhor surgery he will get alot of work ont he strong side in the spring. They want Fletcher to solidfy the D at the Mike spot and thing Rocvky should be ready to play Will.
Lemar will have a role on passign downs in some pass rush situations, but Flecther would be their guy in the middle.

Posted by: Jason La Canfora | February 13, 2007 7:46 PM

Earth to Cliff! Did you even read what I wrote??? I NEVER said that our 06-07 season was positive. I said that the ESPN guys were somewhat positive about NEXT season - said we would have a better season but would not win the NFC East. I was quite happy with their comments because they were high on us before the season began this year and we stunk. So if they say bad things about the future, perhaps good things will happen.

In the future, read my comments before reacting.

Posted by: LH | February 13, 2007 7:54 PM

cliff,

My mentor told me long ago, "If you want to know how someone is going to do, look at their record."

Big Schott consistently did much better than Wade.

Of course, no one can predict the future so who really knows. All I know is right now, I'm happier that Wade is their coach and not Schott. My prediction is that Wade will take them to the playoffs but after that, a downward slide.

Looks like JLC has had a few beers before posting!

Adam, my new locale of Portland has become the poster child of bad driving thanks to that video. About a dozen people sent me that video after the storm, which I'm sure was the case for most Portlanders new and old.

So I really appreciate your bringing it out of the vault to mark the approximately one-sixteenth of an inch of accumulated ice which will keep Dorf snoozing into his pillow until tomorrow afternoon.

Not driving was the right call during that Portland storm (video being exhibit A for the alternative) and I hope all you DC/VA peeps can make the same call if there's any chance of bad conditions out there.

Look at me, channeling Bob Ryan up here. Not making any predictions, just hoping the best for all the bloggies.

J-LaToucanfora, catching up from your post at the end of the last post...

There are some Johnny Thunders mentions in 'New York Doll,' as well as the two Doll drummers who passed, but the focus is really on Arthur and then David and Sylvain when they reunite. Johnny Thunders was great, you have that right. His "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory" features prominently in the documentary and is about as poignant as punk can get, given his early demise.

Amazes me that so many of those original punk dudes had tragic early deaths, and now it's all these years on and Lou Reed, Iggy and Bowie -- the granddaddies of punk and brilliant, weird rock, the Big Three as far as I'm concerned -- are still around. Better living through chemistry, I guess.

OK, OK

here I am up late on the blog again, talking to myself. Yes, I am having a drink for medicinal purposes but am not inebriated. I want to try and say something here so please bear with me.

Happy Valentine's Day, blog peeps.

Yes, it's a frivolous holiday for the most part, and yes, I'm going to stretch to make a typically goofy point: let's be a little more loving here on the blog. Please.

Let's not have any more of the unpleasant, un-funny and uncharacteristic meanness we've seen up here the past few days.

As Mark says above, if you come across an unkind post, just skip over it, don't respond. And as The Mole reminds us, ignoring the unwelcome negativity is better than any response.

Just felt the need to post this because this day is about love (it's past midnight on the west coast), and I love this damned blog, and I want to look forward to reviewing conversations I've missed, rather than dreading the meanness and obscenity I might find there.

There have been a lot of great conversations woven through the past eight months, featuring terrific and unique personalities, on and off the subjects of the Skins/Lancers, and I want that sort of thing to continue unabated and unmitigated by clouds of ill will.

I don't want this recent spate of negativity and ugliness to drive away any of the peeps who have made this blog such a delight to read and participate in.

That's my Valentine's Day address.

Seriously, much love to my blog pals from the PDX. Especially to Jason and Cindy for keeping this wonderful, silly thing going.

Yeah, where is HaikuMan anyway?

Posted by: jm220 | February 14, 2007 7:43 AM

Due to the many negative post the last couple of days. (and since I am the only one here right now) I think this is in order.Enjoy.

At some point in our lives, many of us find ourselves overcome with the desire to become better people. While we are all uniquely capable of navigating this world, we may nonetheless feel driven to grow, expand, and change. This innate need for personal expansion can lead us down many paths as we develop within the context of our individual lives. Yet the initial steps that can put us on the road to evolution are not always clear. We understand that we want to be better but have no clear definition of "better." To ease this often frustrating uncertainty, we can take small steps, keeping our own concept of growth in mind rather than allowing others to direct the course of our journey. And we should accept that change won't happen overnight--we may not recognize the transformations taking place within us at first.

Becoming a better person in your own eyes is a whole-life project, and thus you should focus your step-by-step efforts on multiple areas of your existence. Since you likely know innately which qualities you consider good, growing as an individual is simply a matter of making an effort to do good whenever possible. Respect should be a key element of your efforts. When you acknowledge that all people are deserving of compassion, consideration, and dignity, you are naturally more apt to treat them in the manner you yourself wish to be treated. You will intuitively become a more active listener, universally helpful, and truthful. Going the extra mile in all you do can also facilitate evolution. Approaching your everyday duties with an upbeat attitude and positive expectations can help you make the world a brighter, more cheerful place. Finally, coming to terms with your values and then abiding by them will enable you to introduce a new degree of integrity and dignity into your life.

As you endeavor to develop yourself further, you can take pride not only in your successes, but also in the fact that you are cultivating consciousness within yourself through your choices, actions, and behaviors. While you may never feel you have reached the pinnacles of awareness you hope to achieve, you can make the most of this creative process of transformation. Becoming a better person is your choice and is a natural progression in your journey of self-awareness.

jm220,

Unfortunately, I'm supposed to be doing a major software release for my institute this Friday and I simply can't do all the things I need to do working remotely. Believe me, if this weren't the case, I wouldn't be moving from my couch today. Driving in snow isn't fun, but I've had enough practice to know how to do it reasonably safely; driving in ice scares the crap out of me.

Thanks for the kind words.

Very good, jm220...I for one will try to take your words to heart. There was definitely too much negativity yesterday and I contributed to it and feel bad about that (sorry, Nate, for giving in to the Trolls but I am after all a "bama" girl :-)
Happy Valentine's Day, everyone....

I, also, am at work today. My office follows the government schedule (although I do not work for the government)so we were running two hours late. I debated whether to go to the gym before heading to work but decided against it. Seeing that I am one of only 3 people here I wish I had gone to the gym instead.

JM220,

Well said, thanks.

I was hoping for others to join in because I don't know the words either.

Fredericksburg didn't get hit as bad as up north, but that didn't stop everyone else in my office from not coming in. I feel like a shmuck all alone here. I think I'll go make snow angels in the parking lot.

J-La writes about Brunell-in-the-head today. Coming attraction of the offseason drama -- which coach gets to keep his elite practice team standout QB versus cable guy QB who helps "install" the offense, respectively?

Prediction. Neither. Both become position coaches, the former in Jacksonville and the latter in college. Instead, we learn about who Casey Bramlet really is ... with another year allocated to NFL Europe, will he be the next Mark Warner? [By that, I mean whether he can become an NFL starter, rather than another vet QB pushed out as the scapegoat for his team's crappy performance in favor of younger talent.]

Posted by: dcsween | February 14, 2007 10:18 AM

I'm not sure I'd vote for Casey Bramlet if he ran for Governer of Virginia. I don't know his stance on the car tax.

The smart move would be letting Brunell go. He's no expert on Saunders' offense, and him being on the team only gets Coach Gibbs all curious about his ability (while nobody else is).

Campbell starts, Collins backs up and helps Campbell develop and if they are serious about sending Casey Bramlet to NFL Europa for some playing time. Then maybe he's your 3rd stringer/project guy. Young kid, 6'4'. Who knows if he's worth a roster spot. But I know Brunell isn't. Let him figure for a job with the Texans.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I propose a blaw: JM220 and Lisa get five free passes to flirt on RI and after that they will be forced to go on a real date. Let's start the counter at zero.

He's gone now.

Posted by: etrod | February 14, 2007 10:33 AM

This would be (at least) a second season in NFL Europe for Bramlett, but I think he was one of the leading QBs there. While he is young, he was in the same draft class as Sean Taylor. He was a 7th round pick by the Bengals that year (maybe the next Tom Brady? By that I mean a guy who complains about how the media disrespects him, and not a lead round gem who blossoms when he finally gets a chance to start ... wink, wink).

Posted by: dcsween | February 14, 2007 10:36 AM

typo alert ... I said 'lead round gem' but meant 'late round gem'

Back to some football topic.

Anything can happen in The NFL today. Parity has made it possible and likely that a team or more than one team can rise from the depths to at least contend and maybe go all the way.

No reason the skins can't be one of those teams in 07.I have said before, the difference between bad teams and good teams is very thin. I like alot things we do that I think are fundemental to all good football teams Namely we can run, we have very good depth at RB, and we don't at least so far turn it over much. We play good special teams, most times getting good field position. On Defense I think we are actually a better run D than we showed last year (at least decent) so that part of the defense doesn't concern me as much.

What is a concern.

Pressure on QB front D-line
turnovers (related To pressure)
Kicker (maybe we have one maybe we don't)
SS and nickel corner

I admit those are important areas to fix and may not all be solved this season, but 2/3 of the team offense/special teams is in good shape. We have very good coaches and continuity.

I not saying I'm just saying.

Posted by: chris larry | February 14, 2007 10:47 AM

Old School, amen brother, but you forgot one of the other factors affecting the width of (and a team's position) on that very thin line ... injuries. With depth that is actually competitive (and allowed to compete so as not to threaten the ego of the overpaid), injuries become less of a factor.

With advanced apologies to Lisa, I'm thinking about Shawn Springs and that thin line. Seems like the buzz on Clements makes his signing a foregone (and presumably expensive) conclusion ... so I'm still wonder about the fate of guys like Springs, esp. if a contract re-do doesn't work out ... in the same way Wynn and Daniels must be wondering about that.

In other news, Dre Bly (CB), a starter for the Lions, wants to be traded. The buzz is that he doesn't do the CB position right under Maranelli's Tampa 2 D (which makes me think that, even if he comes cheaper than someone like Clements, he wouldn't work in the Double G Two D). Mock the Lions if you will, but I continue to think the Skins got value out of V. Fox.

Posted by: dcsween | February 14, 2007 10:53 AM

Dre Bly sounds nice, but who do we give up? I'm pretty sure even Matt Millen would pass on Archuletta at this point.

etrod, a trade doesn't need to be position-for-position. There might be spots where the Skins FO thinks we are plenty deep (for example, tight end, as in, "Fauria, see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya"). Kenny Wrong used to be the starting nickel on the Panthers and GG seemed to THINK he would work in a Cover-2 type defense. There would be no love lost there (though I think Bly might command more than Kenny Wright alone ... maybe toss in Posey, esp. given the anticipated redundancy if they bring in a new MLB).

Just saw on a Minnesota paper that rumor has it that Smoot is going to be cut. Could we do worse than bringing him back? For a cheap price, I mean, instead of dropping loads on the Bills players....

Posted by: 'canes fan (not Miami) | February 14, 2007 11:12 AM

Nobody expects anything from their 3rd stringer. But there is no point in having 2 Vets like we have.

You have one Vet, and a project guy. For all I care, you find some tweener who can be your 3rd QB and also 6th WR.

Posted by: AEE | February 14, 2007 11:12 AM

Actually, Screw that.

Forget a #3 QB. I would prefer to use that spot for somebody useful on gameday like a LB or DB.

Let Randel El be the #3. He throws better than Mark anyways.

Posted by: AEE | February 14, 2007 11:14 AM

I think Detroit would probably want a draft pick as compensation for someone like Dre Bly, probably a second or third rounder, which we don't have (But there's always next year!).

Hopefully Coach Joe has learned his lesson about trading away picks. I think if Smoot becomes available, he would be the best option. I understand he has been humbled a little bit and may be willing to accept a nickel back role in a familar place.

Unfortunately that's not the way things are done in the nation's capital. Reserve your Nate Clemments jersey now.

Springs was injured most of last season and replacing him with Clements could have the same effect on Taylor as cutting Ryan Clark did. Skins FO - please think about the Reaper!

Also, I think both Wynn and Daniels need to stay - at least in a backup role. They are "core" Skins and we need depth.

Every roster up grade you make makes your team stonger. We have tossed about all the obvious names of people we would like to see no longer part of the lancers current future latest long term short term plan.

how about some not so obvious names who in my opinion have to to be upgraded and shouldn't be hard to find with younger faster stronger potential impact types even if a couple of them are brought in as future ("projects). My list

Boschetti
Jimoh
yoder
Posey
evens

Boschetti been around 3 seasons nice story yr 1, but now inactive week after week Hello
Evens versitile but again DE is an impact position, suppose our third or fourth de is a 6'4" "tweener college linebacker who can rush the passer and maybe in a year or two puts 15 or 20lbs. My point, Evens is what he his,not going to emerge into anything but a guy.Same for Jimoh, possey.

doesn't seem like much of a risk here cap wise or on the field. we know what these guys can do. move on.I guess this is one of the things i really can't stand is the sentemenality of "we really like these guys" that works for a year maybe two if you think there could some "developement potential" But improving the bottom of your roster is almost as important as cutting the big name, Big$ stiffs at the top.

Posted by: Old School | February 14, 2007 12:03 PM

If we had any inkling that Todd Collins can play football aside from what Saunders believes, I would suggest we keep Collins as second stringer and de facto QB mentor. But we don't have any inkling he can play, because Collins has thrown like twelve passes in twelve years. Not the guy I want to see warming up in the event Soupy goes down.

I think Brunell is the better choice as backup, as long as his cap number comes waaaaaay down. He's already talking about his willingness to accept the backup role. The receivers know him, they know to run their routes shorter and slower when he's in there throwing muffins, and they know to always, always come back to the ball, to keep it from skipping on the turf.

And Gibbs is sticking with Soupy barring disaster, so no QB controversy will result from keeping Brunell around. This isn't like Grilliams finally, grudgingly agreeing to play Rocky Mac (no surprise to me if Rocky isn't starting on opening day).

Gibbs knows that having made the switch, he needs to focus on nurturing and developing Soupy. This I believe.

Lisa- agreed on Wynn and Daniels, but as we have speculated, and LaToucanfora also touched on, neither one has been approached about redoing their contract. Combined, they're going to count more than $7 million on the cap as it stands now. No way they're coming back with those numbers.

Great post above about the bottom of the roster, Old School.

You hate to see guys like Jimoh kept around because they are 'great special teamers' or 'great locker room guys' and then see them getting pciked on and burned whenever they show up in a nickel or dime package. Guys like that need to shine whenever they get a chance in a regular package. Yeah, this is about having quality depth, a sore subject up here.

Here's a paste from an ESPN Draft Chat with Eddie Munster... I mean Mel Kiper

D. Snyder (DC): I need help, Mel. Anderson/Gaines or Branch?

Mel Kiper: (1:32 PM ET ) In that scenario, I'd have Anderson over Adams at DE. And Branch and Anderson is too close to call, because we don't have accurate measurables on these juniors. After the combine and we see how they fit in, it comes down to one of those two. The team that could take Anderson before Washington is Arizona, which would leave Branch and Adams for Washington...and I would take Branch. He is a rare physical talent, but he needs technique work. He could be a big-time force in the future, with his physical prowess.

Posted by: etrod | February 14, 2007 1:51 PM

Can't remember, was Smoot's parting with the Lancers particularly contentious?

I loved Smoot when he was here. Not really a #1 corner, but he was the last young'un who got to play alongside Darrell and learn from the master firsthand.

Damn, he was a smack-talker, too. But in a good way.

Jason has forsaken us. Without our leader we have become a bitter, fractious group consumed by hatred. All is lost...

Ok now that that is over. Wouldn't it be hilarious if that really was Danny who posted that. I can't say i'd be suprised.

I'm suprised he picked Anderson over Adams. I was under the impression that Adams was the best DE in the draft hands down.

Posted by: Skinz | February 14, 2007 1:53 PM

Nate, I don't remember Smoot's departing being contentious...skins didn't match the offer and when the dust settled, he said something to the effect of "I have nothing but love and respect for all the Redskins fans out there...but it's 2005 and I'm playing for the purple and gold."
