Got an email from Craig, a Skins fan, who is hoping to get his father's ashes spread at RFK or Fed Ex Field. He's in contact with the team trying to work something out, and wanted to share his father's passion for the Redskins with you guys. Maybe somehow posting this will help in some way, and I know it can't hurt.

So I'll turn it over to Craig now:

Dad grew up in Wadsworth, OH and naturally was a Cleveland Browns fan. He graduated from Case Tech now known as Case Western Reserve with a degree in Electrical Engineering during the World War II. He moved to Bethesda, Md in 1947 when I was six months old. During his professional career, he become known as one of the best Consulting Communication Engineers in the US. He was a huge sports fan and was involved deeply with the boys baseball associations when my brother and I were growing up.

This actually spanned over a long period since I am 19 years older than my brother. I graduated from Walter Johnson HS in 1965 and Eric graduated from Springbrook HS in 1984. We both played football and baseball in HS. Dad naturally became a big Senators and Redskins fan during the 40 years he lived in the DC area. He moved to Greenville, NC at the age of 62 to join a small consulting firm and worked fulltime until he retired at the age of 77. Peggy, my stepmother, and Dad moved to outside of Huntsville, AL after they retired to be close to my sister, Mary Beth, and her family (the youngest grandchildren).

When the Redskins moved into RFK, he bought four season tickets in the corner of the end zone, third base side of the infield. Two seats on the front row of the upper deck and two right behind on the 2nd row. Great seats!! I remember several great Cowboys-Skins games with Sonny at QB and the stands were actually rocking. When Dad retired and moved to Alabama, Eric bought him Direct TV and an annual NFL ticket in order for Dad and Peggy to watch the Skins. Every morning he would access the Washington Post website and print the Redskins articles.

The last time I talked with Dad last year he was so excited about the big name free agents they had just signed. Two weeks later he died instantly from a massive heart attack. Luckily he did not have to watch the Skins during this past season. Up in heaven, he probably is just shaking his head.

When the family gathered for the funeral we all agreed that we need to try to get his ashes spread on Redskin property. This is was his greatest thrill in the sporting arena. He lived and died for the Skins. Hence "Hail to the Redskins" was played at his funeral service.

This is the first time, our family has made an attempt to get together in the Washington area to try to spread Dad's ashes on one of the Redskins fields. I have a business conference in Tyson's Corner area starting on March 20 so this event is the one that has spurred this gathering. Eric is the only one still living in the Washington area. So our passion is to have a great celebration on Sat March 24.

We appreciate any help you can give us.

Thanks,
Craig Rohrer

dude you shouldnt have said anything and during a sporting event at RFK or better yet a football game at FED EX, jumped on the feild and ran around like one of those clowns and spread his ashes that way???That would make National news???

Walter Johnson Class of 2007!!

Still going to the school!!!

GO WILDCATS!!

I'm thinking you may have better luck at RFK than FedEx. No reason other than my initial instinct is the Danny wouldn't be super excited unless he could charge.

There are probably a fair number of people who had your dad's passion and have the same request so maybe the Redskins PR dept has a whole set up. My sinking sneaking suspicion is they say no to all requests in which case I say go commando ninja.

Good luck and I hope your dad gets to rest in peace amongst the turf.

Just a suggestion ... why not spread the ashes some place in the tailgate area. This way each game you attend you could "visit" and actually go into the game and bring something back to that spot. His ashes would be around people with the same passion, you have a place to "be around him" and later perhaps you could leave behind your ticket stub, maybe a hot dog etc... I know its a personal decision, but just wanted to add my 2 cents. Best of luck.

Craig, your father sounds like a great guy -a core Redskin. Hopefully everything works out. I lost my mother several months ago (she lived in Alabama as well) and it's been a really sad time.

On a draft note: Path to the Draft tonight (on the NFL Network) focused on defensive players and also put the Skins on the clock. Mike Mayock (who is a great analyst) really likes Gaines Adams - said he is a real playmaker. He also likes Carriker. Did not seem that high or either Alan Branch (said he was a "boom" or "bust" player) or Anderson.

Posted by: Lisa | March 12, 2007 8:29 PM

I'd have second thoughts about spreading the ashes on RFK. Because if Daniel Snyder plans to return the Redskins there, they will remodel the whole place. The seats, the grass, everything will be taken out. Yet if there was a way to spread the ashes in the dirt under the grass, then the dirt wouldn't be touched and the new RFK would be placed over it. That way the memory of the father would truly be there forever.

Don't take this the wrong way, I am trying to make sure the ashes will remain. Placing ashes in a river or a cliff works, the air or the water spreads the ashes to eternity. But if they were on the RFK field now, they might not be there in the near future.

To repeat from previous thread (wasn't sure about etiquette with the guest blog) I'm watching show on PacTime. Gaine Adams holy shmoly really a monster!

Hello all. My grandfather used to be a photographer for the Redskins back during the Sammy Baugh era. My father had some of those pictures, but he "loaned" them to Sam Hough and Sam never returned them. I found a few more pictures recently. I plan to go to a photo shop (if they still exist) and have some copies made for the Redskins organization, Snyder, Gibbs, etc.. I have them on jpeg and if anybody wants copies, you can email me at midniterc@aol.com. I don't know who any of the players are. They're just old pics that my grandfather took.

Posted by: midniterc | March 12, 2007 8:51 PM

sfskin,

If we stay at #6, I hope we pick Gaines Adams....like you said - he's a beast...and he seems like a good guy.

Posted by: Lisa | March 12, 2007 9:11 PM

Saw that draft show a couple people mentioned about. It's a real shame that Branch looks to be a player who doesn't bring full effort on every play. Sounds almost exactly like a Leonard Davis type on the other side of the ball. All the size and physical tools but tends to be lazy. He'd be the guy who could help the Skins the most but they would be wise to stay away. Gaines Adams looks to be a good pass rusher but they showed a couple plays in 1 game against BC that he was getting manhandled against the run. We need to get this pick right, unfortunately it doesn't seem to be an easy one.

Saw JLC had something about Archuleta's bonus payment being pushed back. Highly doubt its possible but interesting stuff. Lovie Smith high on Arch and a disgruntled player from Chi-town.

I would love to have Briggs. He will probably get traded to the Giants. Antonio Pierce was pushing for him to come there a month or so ago.

Posted by: Lisa | March 12, 2007 9:48 PM

Yeah NFLN dissects the players to expose good, bad and ugly. But I think I'd take Gaines over Branch in terms of immediate impact. Gator player (blanking on the name right now) who can play DT or DE seems like an option although haven't heard any word about us going after him.

The more I look at the mock draft the more I think we nned to trade down for extra picks. There are enough DEs that we drop a few picks we can still get one whose pretty good.

Look at me ma I can say the same thing over and over and over again with no hands!

Posted by: sfskin | March 12, 2007 11:18 PM

Gator Player - Ray McDonald, DE/DT

Nice call, sfskin.

For the record,

my in-laws looked into this for my grandfather in law who had been a season ticket holder since the Grifftih Field days starting in 1947. He didn't miss a home game till he hit 80 and it was nixed based on the the idea (false in my opinion) that it would set a bad precedent. They went through the DC Stadium Authority, I think, as they have basic property control over the site.

So, I think your best bet is something unbeknownst to anyone. I like the idea of a tailgate spot only I'd be afraid of drunks inadvertently relieving themselves on me.

Your dad sounds like a die-hard, though and I wish you all the best.

Posted by: evan | March 13, 2007 6:19 AM

I wish you all the best Craig and hope things works out for you.

Macaca Johnson I watch the clip. They don't make music like that anymore.

Posted by: jm220 | March 13, 2007 6:40 AM

Craig,

If the stadium thing doesn't work out, you may want to ask about Redskin Park as an alternative.

Best of luck.

Posted by: etrod | March 13, 2007 6:42 AM

craig, sorry to hear about your dad. someone told me once that you never really "grow up" or stop being a "child" until your parents pass away. sorry you had to grow up.

i hope skins org. complies with your dad's wishes. and may he bring good luck to the skins and their fans (us) in '07-08.

go jason campbell!

Posted by: dealer | March 13, 2007 7:53 AM

Craig, sorry for your loss.

The comments about the impermanence of RFK sound right to me. I also think FedEx is not going to be the home of the Skins for more than about a decade. After some time goes by and people forget about the baseball stadium, something tells me Mr. $nyder will be building a new stadium within DC limits. I recommend waiting till then. As for the commando guerilla techniques, that makes sense too. Instead of trying to get an urn past security and onto the field, though, just wait till they are building the next stadium and find a construction worker. Slip him/her some cash to come on-site when they are pouring the concrete, and mix the ashes into the aggregate. Your dad's ashes would then have the permanence of Jimmy Hoffa in the Meadowlands. Good luck.

I laughed when I saw the latest mock draft from MSNBC. I think you all will too. Jamaal Anderson is at the bottom of the draft to the Saints.

6. Redskins Adrian Peterson RB 6-2 218 Oklahoma

If Peterson remains on the board with the No. 6 pick, Joe Gibbs won't be able to let him pass. Look for the Redskins to trade Clinton Portis and get a high pick for him. Portis is an outstanding back, but Peterson has too much value to let him get by. The key to Gibbs' offense has always been the running gamem, and Peterson is a sensational looking prospect.

Posted by: L'Ville Skins Fan | March 13, 2007 8:43 AM

L'ville, doesn't look THAT far out of the range of possibilities, except for the Clinton Portis part. Its not impossible to see them drafting Adrian Peterson and trading Ladell Betts. More likely, however, if Peterson is available at #6, seems like it would be a trade of #6 to someone who wants Peterson (in exchange for their first round pick and something else, either a player or more picks).

Posted by: dcsween | March 13, 2007 8:45 AM

The Redskins will NOT be drafting Adrian Peterson. There is just no chance of that happening. Running back, or the running game was not the problem with this team last year.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | March 13, 2007 8:56 AM

Craig,

Best of luck. My suggestion, contact another whose has tremendous fans like our, in this case I am thinking the Packers, and see if they would allow it as well. Some times if you tell the Danny that some other team beat him to it, he would want to do it better than the others.

JLC, read your article this morning. "They extended the deadline to pay Archuleta's bonus which could indicate the desire to trade or cut him." Is this why they have gotten so far under the cap? From what I read before, if Springs gets traded it would only cost us another $500K this year as he already is counting $7.3M against the cap. Could this be a draft day deal or potentially a situation to trade him to the Bears and get Lance Briggs in return?

Posted by: straubjmu25 | March 13, 2007 9:02 AM

Peterson is a great player and a good kid, but he has been plagued by injuries his entire career (injured thumb, knee and hammy probs in H.S. as well as ankle, hammy and shoulder probs at OU) That said, he is one of the toughest kids I have ever seen play. I think if he falls to #6 the skins would be wise to trade down and get more picks. Team has plenty of needs and RB doesn't seem to be one of them.

Posted by: NC skins fan | March 13, 2007 9:05 AM

We will not be trading Arch to the bears for Briggs. Thats just foolish to even think that will happen. The Bears put the Franchise tag on this guy, so the LEAST they expect to get in a trade is a FIRST ROUND PICK, but somehow we're going to dangle Arch, and they're going to take the bait? Lets be realistic.

Posted by: Greg(Boston) | March 13, 2007 9:11 AM

straubjmu25, I tend to agree with Greg(Boston) that, though it would be sweet if we could trade contract obligations of Archuleta for Briggs, I don't see it. At least, not as a two way trade b/c the Skins just made their offseason splash with Fletcher.

I could, however, see a three way trade (assuming the Bears were willing to accept Archuleta's contract) and someone else had a need for Briggs. That level of player/contract could be something really sweet for the Skins, whether at LG, CB, DE, or DT.

Still, for as much as Briggs wants out (apparently yesterday he said he would NOT play for the Bears next year, even if it meant sitting out for a year), it seems like too much wishful thinking.

Posted by: dcsween | March 13, 2007 9:18 AM

As it has been REPEATED repeatedly on this blog, Portis is not going anywhere! Jason even stated it...Gibbs loves Portis. How many times do we have to address this issue?????

Posted by: Lisa | March 13, 2007 9:21 AM

new post up about Yoder signing.

Posted by: dcsween | March 13, 2007 9:21 AM

First, Craig - the best of luck to you in your efforts in getting your dad's ashes onto the fields. Hopefully, the Skins organization will help you and your family out.

The MSNBC.com D'oh!-raft - Boy, they sure do know how to put the 'mock' into 'draft', don't they? I'm pretty sure the Skins are happy enough with PortiBetts as to not mess with that combination. I'm with dcsween on this one - it'll be a trade-down for picks rather than trade out for a player. I also get the feeling that the number of Redskins games the MSNBC analysts watched last season rides on the low end of between '0' and '1'....

Archuleta - Trade bait? We'd likely have to hand over another pick to go with him for anyone to make any sort of blockbuster deal. If they trade him to the Bears, it'll be for maybe a mid-draft pick, at most. Briggs would be wishful thinking run amuck.

Posted by: FlimFlam | March 13, 2007 10:07 AM

Now we know the Redskins secret draft and trade strategy for 2007:

Draft Peterson at #6. Trade Portis and Lloyd to Minnesota for their #7 pick. Draft Brady Quinn at #7. Trade Quinn to Texas for their #8 pick + a second-rounder. Draft Laron Landry with the #8 pick. Trade Sean Taylor to Atlanta for their #10 pick + a 3rd rounder. Trade the #10 pick and Ladell Betts to Denver for their #21 pick, Dre Bly, and their 2nd rounder and the 3rd round pick they got from the Redskins last year. Trade the #21 pick and Adam Archuleta to Chicago for their #31 pick and Lance Briggs. Trade Springs to Detroit for their 2nd round pick (#34).

Net result is the Redskins get Adrian Peterson, Laron Landry, Lance Briggs, Dre Bly and the #31 pick, plus three 2nd round and two 3rd round picks. Redskins use the #31 pick for a defensive tackle and their 2nd round picks for a guard, a cornerback, and a defensive end. Third round picks are traded to other teams for 2nd round picks in 2008.

Redskins lose Portis, Betts, Springs, Taylor, Lloyd and Archuleta.

It's all so clear now.

Ah yes!, that leaves the team one RB short. No deal.

Posted by: dcsween | March 13, 2007 10:44 AM

doesn't he have a better place to fertilize the grass than there... what a wuss!!!

Posted by: scoop | March 13, 2007 12:17 PM

Craig - sorry about your loss.

If you want to go really commando try having the ashes spread via air-drop ... except do it at Dallas ... after everybody gets a fresh beverage.
