LaVar Update
Had a nice conversation with LaVar Arrington's agent, Kevin Poston, this morning to go over some things. There have been a lot of rumors about LaVar retiring, and several of his former teammates have suggested to me they had talked to him and thought it was possible.
Poston says LaVar is about a month away from being able to run and jump well enough to pass an NFL physical, but is making good strides recovering from the Achilles injury that ended his season and led to his release by the Giants. Poston said LaVar is working hard and, while not entirely ruling out a change of heart at some point, said the former Pro Bowler has every intention of playing football in 2007.
"Things could change at some point, but as of this moment LaVar is focused on playing this season," Poston told me while I jotted down notes in the canned-food isle of my local Safeway (thank goodness for cellphones). "I just spoke to him again over the weekend and he wants to continue playing. He's progressing well and LaVar is still young. Injuries are a part of this game and he's getting over the Achilles and there has been some interest in him (as a free agent) already. You look at the money being spent out there on guys who are 33, 34 years old, and LaVar is 28 (turns 29 in June) and has some good years left."
Poston equated Arrington's situation with that of Ty Law a few years back. Law entered the free-agent market late due to health concerns, then ended up making solid money. LaVar has not been healthy since 2003, however, so I doubt he's going to be get anything other than incentive-laden deals.
I told Kevin about some other players saying LaVar seemed down, and he said LaVar has been in good spirits, but, through the course of another tough recovery, had times when he thought more about life after football. I got the impression that coming back wasn't a 100 percent slam dunk for LaVar, and may not still be if he can't pass a physical in another six weeks or so.
The bottom line is that this dude is going to have a lot of possibilities after the game is over, regardless. He has a natural charisma, loves being around people, is articulate and out-spoken. I could see him being on a reality TV show, doing some acting, working in the media as an analyst or heck, if his body was up to it, doing some kind of promotion with the WWE or something.
Kevin agreed that LaVar could go in several different directions when he is finished playing, but said that could be several years off.
"He's got to be able to run and jump and do all the things he needs to do to play football, and we're just not there yet," Poston said. "We're kind of in a holding pattern right now, but we've heard from some teams and right now LaVar is committed to playing football."

Why not bring him back here, and use him only in pass rush situations where he would have only one job...kill the QB. He is a player that must be accounted for on the football field, and if you do not overuse him/play too much coverage, he could be effective.
Posted by: Pass rush? | March 12, 2007 3:52 PM
Pass Rush?
Do you forget the terms under which LaVar left? He burned his bridges with the Redskins. He treated the coaches and management badly. He doesn't belong here.
It sounds like he's never going to suit up again.

He should come back...and play here - I could are less about the other STRUGGALING comments coming from all of the other STRUGGALING idiots who hate LaVar...
It is written...

misspelled 'struggling' twice. officially not a typo. just straight indictment of our educational system.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 12, 2007 4:12 PM
JLaC this doesn't mean your sauces are incorrect. I wouldn't expect Poston to say anything other than what he told you. If he confirmed LA was considering retirement, it would make a comeback more difficult in the event he changed his mind because teams would question his commitment. Better to keep his options open by saying he is committed to making a comeback than closing the door to future opportunity.
Posted by: LH | March 12, 2007 4:16 PM
When is the last time an agent said something akin to "No one's called yet?" I love LaVar, don't get me wrong, but I just don't see teams lining him up. Not after three straight years of injury after injury.
I'd still bring him back, though, as Pass Rush said...Give him one assignment: "Kill the QB" and let him go.
Posted by: duck | March 12, 2007 4:18 PM
Knowing how LaVar can be at times, it is likely he will be the first NFL player to come back too soon from a torn Achilles tendon and tear it again. It is a difficult injury to recover from, and trying to rehab it too quickly could be his worst mistake ever. He should be looking at coming back i 2008 instead of 2007.
That said, I always liked LaVar and the energy he brought to the Redskins, but I don't see him being welcomed back to DC with open arms as long as Gibbs, G. Williams, and Snyder are here. Of course, stranger things have happened, so who knows.

Not a big fan of Duke, but I like this kid's ingenuity. Shows he's put his education to a good use.

Cindy,
It's nice to see that the blog clock is as accurate as the snow cam is well-lit at night.

A quick comment on the previous topic -
The only good reason to bring back Biscotti for 2007 is if the Redskins intend to start Golsten and Montgomery and dump some high-priced DTs on the roster. That will allow for enough cap room to sign draft picks and undrafted free agents.
Posted by: The Mole | March 12, 2007 4:27 PM
Cowboys released Jason Fabini (right tackle). Could he play left guard?
Posted by: dcsween | March 12, 2007 4:28 PM
I think we could all agree LaVar was a straight beast......key word being was.
Not very many, if any can come back from an Achilles tear, and posess the explosion and speed necessary to be effective. His knees were bothering him before the Achilles, so why bother?
I loved the LaVar, he was the Reaper, before the Reaper got here.....remember the hit to Aikman's head? Next to Dexter pummeling Danny White at RFK, that may be one of my favorites.
Posted by: k Squared | March 12, 2007 4:29 PM
Mole, right now the roster has 8 defensive tackles. Other than Cornelius, Big Joe is the only guy with starter time before last season. I don't think, however, that his contract numbers are that big.
Posted by: dcsween | March 12, 2007 4:30 PM
Emmitt to ESPN woohooo! I hope you are all looking forward to spending some quality time with your old buddy on Sundays and Mondays. Then again, I guess Emmitt in and Irvin out is a win even for skinny fans.
Posted by: SMACK | March 12, 2007 4:31 PM
Fabini plain stinks. I wouldn't wish him on, well, my worst enemy. Please just let this guy find a new line of work.
Posted by: SMACK | March 12, 2007 4:36 PM
DC -
If nothing else, it looks like the Redskins aren't looking to draft Branch or Okoye in April. (Or overstocking the DT roster is a disinformation tactic.)
I don't remember what the cap savings would be for letting go Salave'a and Cornelius. Whatever the amounts, electing the June 2 treatment on both of them would spread the cap hit and give them additional signing room. My guess is they will need that extra room.
Maybe Cornelius gets cut and then signs as a player/coach.

Every former Cowboy who gets hired as a NFL network hack brings us one day closer to La Canfora's Customized Commentary program.

SMACK (do you go by Mr. SMACK? Dr. SMACK? Is it short for Smacktacular? When you were little, did your folks call you Smacky?), just checking on Fabini. With the purge of Larry Allen last year, plus the upgrade on Fabini (and what's looking like a maybe non-re-sign of Marco Rivera), I'm wondering whether the Cowboys aren't doing some gradual replacement of an aging line. At some point, the Skins might need to do the same, and in a hurry. Samuels and Jansen are entering seasons #8 and 9, respectively, and Thomas is entering his 9th season. Rabach, entering his 7th season is the new youngster with Dockery gone. Depth is one thing (hello Ross Tucker), but young starters are another. Pucillo is entering his 6th season. I think its time get him (or someone in that range) starting underneath Rabach. Mulitalo, if he came, would be older than Jansen or Thomas.

On a non-related AFC note -
The ambitious UFA signings in New England and Denver this year should make for an interesting intra-conference bloodbath in 2007. It won't be a good year to have to play the Patriots.
Posted by: The Mole | March 12, 2007 4:52 PM
Dang, LaVar is only 28. What a shabingus of a career. I hope the best for the dude, but it sure doesn't sound good if running and jumping are about a month away. Good grief.
He should get as healthy as possible and only then try to test himself. Coming back too quickly bit him at least once, maybe twice with us.
As long as he's not suiting up for, say, the Cowboys or Eagles, I'd love for him to get it together for a comeback. Tough road, though.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | March 12, 2007 4:53 PM
Mole, Skins play the Patriots in Foxboro this season.

Posted by: Icarus | March 12, 2007 4:54 PM
Nate, not hating on LaVar, but I'd be just as happy if he suited up for the Eagles or Cowboys as I was when he suited up for the Giants. Not a problem.

DC -
Maybe the Redskins trade way down in the 1st round, draft Ryan Kalil at center in the 1st, move Rabach to OG, and draft a DE in the 2nd or 3rd round. Takes care of lots of issues at once.
Posted by: The Mole | March 12, 2007 4:56 PM
What a sad conclusion to the story of the one who was supposed to be the second coming of LT in Washington. I had such high hopes for him.
Posted by: Anonymous | March 12, 2007 4:56 PM
star-crossed, that's the word I was trying to remember to describe LaVar's career to date. Damnable sad.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | March 12, 2007 4:56 PM
Nah, keep Rabach in the middle, QB of the linemen. Put the rookie at LG. Still thinking that starters are available in the second and third rounds, esp. at guard. Nope, I still think that, after a trade down, the first pick should be a DT or CB, then the second rounder a DE. The roster just seems SO heavy at DT right now. Still liking Aaron Ross (Texas) at CB, even though other CBs are projected higher. He's last year's Jim Thorpe winner, plus lots of picks (more than the other highly ranked QBs).
Posted by: dcsween | March 12, 2007 5:01 PM
The dude should be down. He has been hurt about 3 or 4 seasons in a row and had not been the star player he was projected and wanted to be. I hope he can play and make a comeback. Trust me there are places for him, like KC for instance that need defensive help.

Hey, Mole! We wanted to light the snow cam, but the neighbors complained. :)
We've alerted the fine folks at Loseable Type about the time change. It should be updated by early November.
Posted by: Cindy | March 12, 2007 5:15 PM
I don't disagree with the needs at DE and CB. Both positions are critical and need future stars. My point about Kalil/Rabach was just that it would address two areas on the line (age, LG) and Gibbs always thinks about the offense first, regardless of how much he talks about drafting defensive help.
The only reason I can think of to stock up at DT is if the defense is going to change to a 3-4. Then you would have Golsten, Cornelius, Montgomery and Carter rotating up front with Washington, Fletcher, Marshall and Rocky at LB. Sure it sounds crazy - it is crazy - but with G. Williams running the defense, anything is possible.
Posted by: DC | March 12, 2007 5:17 PM
Damn! Sorry, DC - that was to you from me.

As for the blog time stamp, did Loseable Type mention early November of which year?

I got the perfect solution. Trade Springs and Lloyd 4 Bly and sum picks. Draft A Guard.(not to many guards get picked in the draft I bet we ccan find a starter.Trade Adam Archuleta andsum picks ion 08 4 Randy Moss and with the first pick selcect in the 07 draft select either Branch or that DE from clemson. I have no problem with Lavar comin back I feel that he and the staff could amend things. We went 5-11 without him. He brought the fans in the gm. Fed Ex Field is the largest stadium but it sounds like the smallest.
Posted by: Devin G | March 12, 2007 5:24 PM
Devin that is the perfect solution for us but the only thing about is... is it possible.

Posted by: The Mole | March 12, 2007 5:30 PM
Nothing's actually changed at DT.
They've got the same 5 guys they had last year: Griffin, Salave'a, Golston, Montgomery, and Boschetti.
Usually only three of them were active on gameday.
If they carried 4, it was always Montgomery who was active.
I don't think Boschetti was ever active once the entire season.
That's why JLC's saying the dude has to make the team. He's the last DT on the depth chart.
He's going to get some competition, probably from a couple rookies or something, for that 5th spot.
That's why he's not a lock to make the team in August when they have roster cut downs.
Posted by: Leon | March 12, 2007 5:32 PM
No one would take Lloyd.
No one would take Archuleta.
No one wants Moss.
LaVar is not coming back.
Gaines Adams? Waste of a pick.
FedEx will not be the biggest much longer. (Just ask SMACK.)
Maybe not so perfect.
Posted by: The Mole | March 12, 2007 5:35 PM
dcsween - thanks for the Kitna reminder at Detroit from previous had totally forgotten he went there but now it all comes back. So if Detroit doesn't take Quinn he could be there at 6 for us to trade with.
I know Cleveland has some QB issues so they're a possibility. Also I wouldn't put it past Oakland to randomly draft an RB especially if Al Davis is involved. Although his new HC is a QB guy so indications are they want a rookie to develop. JaMarcus Russell we hardly knew ya.
dcsween - loved the beer launcher but 2 things 1. clearly a college dude as he's drinking pi$$ water beer and 2. how do you solve the shaking problem that leads to beer all over your clothes problem which is a waste of beer?
Posted by: sfskin | March 12, 2007 5:38 PM
Defintely Mole. Denver has already proven that they are smarter than that. As needy at WR that Denver is, they ain't that desperate.
F Moss, he is a cancer. A perfect solution is getting a GM.
Posted by: k Squared | March 12, 2007 5:39 PM
I just had a thought - crazy crackhead thought - but still a thought.
Let's say Quinn is still there at 6 and both Houston and Minny want him. I know I've been advocating trading down for more picks but what if we traded 6 for a DE or o-line guy. Houston has Mario Williams and he's still too soon to declare great or not but hey we could use him. Or Hutchinson in Minny? I realize that is not an even trade per se and the contracts wouldn't fit our cap issues but it's silly season so I'm thinking silly.
Posted by: sfskin | March 12, 2007 5:43 PM
Regardless of anything I love Lavar. He is a great guy. It may not of worked out with the Skins but He did have some solid years left. And last year with Giants he played well till he got hurt. I think a good playoff team should sign him for a one year deal and let him do his thing and I think he will get a big deal once again.
Posted by: Tommy Z | March 12, 2007 5:46 PM

I think that trying to drink beer with you would also result in the "much beer all over clothes" problem, considering the amount of laughing that might take place. : )
Also, always remember: Not even Al Davis knows what Al Davis is thinking.

So in Newfoundland right now, it's turning 9pm. How f'd up is that?

Nate,
I started reading your post and at first, thought Loco Mullin had struck again.
There are several places in the world that have those weird half-hour time zones. South Australia is one. I think Afghanistan or somewhere close to there in Central Asia is another. I don't really get the point of it.
Done for the day at this end - have a good evening in the west.

La Var will always be remembered fondly in my eyes for ending Aikman's career as a player, and starting his in broadcasting, where he has become, arguably the best color guy on sundays- where he never seems to say anything petty or snide against the skins (actually Joe Buck seems to have more of a prejudice agaist us oddly -a hole)Unlike his teamates who really don't have a place in broadcasting (Deon, Emmit and Cokehead)all of which never hesitate to take a shot at us- very professional.
ANYWAY, my orig point was La Var was coming along nicely in NY then started mouthing off 'bout JG, then BAM! done for the year. Dont these fools realize JG has a Pope-like connection to the man upstairs? Maybe he should have consulted Buddy Ryan, or Jerry Glanville bout running his mouth. Joe Gibbs is God around here and God is rathful. :)

Anybody up for an early week happy hour, raise your hand so we can put a pint glass in it. Please indicate your preference for Monday, Tuesday or both. 7pm or so?
Any suggestions for meeting places? Lower Manhattan or midtown works best for me.
P Diddy, you oughta find some excuse to fly out so you can show 'em how it's done in Belltown.

If no draft deals come along and we hold around where we are (which I think will probably be the case)... what should we take at #6.. a DT or DE ? I say we need a DT more.. we've had constant injuries there, too many people running on us, and we have andre carter who should benefit big time from having a havoc raiser in the middle.. having all the pass rushers in the world aren't going to help if they're running right up the gut on u.. let me know what u think,,
Posted by: vpar | March 12, 2007 7:57 PM
jm220, I would love to come but it would need to be a weekend day for me :-(
Path to the Draft tonight focused on defensive players and also put the Skins on the clock. Mike Mayock (who is a great analyst) really likes Gaines Adams - said he is a real playmaker. He also likes Carriker. Did not seem that high or either Alan Branch (said he was a "boom" or "bust" player) or Anderson.

Posted by: dcsween | March 13, 2007 9:12 AM
I just hope that we (the skins)don't do anything stupid and trade away another ? rounder next year. Since we are all paid in full for our draft picks, next year we should have all of our draft picks where we can build from the draft.
I would trade the 6th pick to trade down for multiple picks but for atleast a 1st and a 3rd this year for the 6th pick.
Posted by: scoop | March 13, 2007 10:10 AM
Theorizing on our draft situation,
I think we desperately need a Pass Rushing beast on the end.
The Arguement - Less time for the QB to sit back and pick apart our coverage. That equals quicker passes, shorter routes, more predicatble offense. Even the best cover corners cannot keep with a WR after 5-6 seconds unless it is a straight go pattern.
That in turn forces a team into longer down and distance sittys (my short word for situations) which of course is Grilliams bread and butter. 3rd and long and release the dawgs!!
Sean taylor will be a beneficiary off the bat since he will not have to turn and run with WR;s, instead attacking the RB or the poor sap who catches the ball over the middle. Running down hill and crushing fools.
With this rush upfeild by the DE's the tackles, assuming Golston keeps progressing, can just hold up the line, no need for them to penetrate, just not let the running qb's escape.
Now LBF doesn't have to turn and run with the TE deep down field and can just cover the 1st down marker. Or attack the ball carrier with 156 tackles per year. In this scenario #98 would still be an effective cover MIKE. (He got burnt after 10 yds down field everytime last year).
Leaving the ability for Marshall and Washington to come through the gaps against a runner or the passer if teams double down our two pass rushing DE's
Any rebuttals to this airtight case?
Posted by: PDSquared | March 13, 2007 11:09 AM
PDSS, sounds good to me, but Washington shouldn't be reliable till midseason at the earliest (hip surgery is right up there with sport hernia re: injuries not rush back on).
Seems like the consensus has been for the pass rushing beast DE. The question remains, which one?
Posted by: dcsween | March 13, 2007 11:14 AM
Can we all agree to retire the word "articulate" from any description of a black athlete?
Posted by: Wordy | March 13, 2007 11:31 AM
PDSquared - good DTs who can push the pocket make DEs much more effective. We need one of each.
Everyone - when are you going to learn that LaVar has stunk since he joined the league? For every big hit like the one on Aikman, he's looked lost on 10 plays. The man has bad technique and slow feet. Only once since he's been the league has he been a consistent threat...see the second half of Marvin Lewis' year here. Otherwise, he's been a complete bust. Oh, he's good on the Eastern Motors commercials, I'll give him that.
Posted by: Chris W. | March 13, 2007 11:33 AM
I 2nd that wordy.
As for Chris W, his feet were not too slow, he overran many plays before they developed. That is why when he originally hurt his knee and was going to only miss a couple of games, I said good since it might just slow him down a bit.
LaVar has no football brain. Maybe not entirely his fault. Everyone has only used him for his athleticism (see Joe Pa letting him be a freelancer). So all he knows is athletics. You could see that when we lined him up as DE. He would just run straighgt into blockers. No technique, no faints. Just bull ahead. Problem is he is 255!

If LA comes back - wherever that may be - rest assured, he will repeat the same tired mantra we've heard every year from him. That he's a new man, that he's gonna prove people wrong, blah blah blah...and then he'll end up on IR as usual.
Some of you actually think Gregg Williams or Gibbs would want to be in the same room with that guy again?
