Carson's Baby Brother

So they take Jordan Palmer, QB, UTEP, continuing the day's trend of drafting people who have relatives who played pro sports.

Sartz was a teammate of Carson's at USC.

This kid will be a project to battle Casey Bramlet for the No. 3 QB spot. If Brunell gets thru minicamp healthy and shows his shoulder is alright, Collins is likely to get cut. Otherwise Mark would be gone and Todd would be the No. 2.

Bramlet is in NFL Europe and the Skins are eager to find a young potential backup QB with Brunell and Collins closer to 40 than 30. We'll see. He's got the right genes, I'll say that much.

they showed some highlights on ESPN. looks like the prototype QB in terms of size. needed more time under mike price. sounds like a reasonable project.

Oh man, shades of Heath Shuler and Gus Frerotte...

Posted by: P Diddy | April 29, 2007 4:10 PM

The day that Mark Brunell gets cut is the day that Gibbs converts to Islam.

Posted by: Joe The Fan | April 29, 2007 4:11 PM

Nice job addressing a need position! Oh wait, just kidding. Don't we already have 4 QB's on the roster? Oh well. No sense in getting upset over a late 6th round pick...

Posted by: Rich in Tampa | April 29, 2007 4:12 PM

So are the Redskins using their late-round picks to fine tune their practice squad?

Posted by: Colin | April 29, 2007 4:13 PM

Ok...why no d-line help...are they in denial or are they going to play four linebackers?

Posted by: jimmmbobb | April 29, 2007 4:14 PM

Guess Gibbs and company fail to realize that the people that block and tackle make the difference in the game? When is the last time this team drafted a decent lineman???

Another QB

pleaseeeeeeeee

Posted by: dc | April 29, 2007 4:14 PM

I gotta admit, I was surprised as hell. But you know what, it's an extra pick we picked up from the Bears, and he's Carson Palmer's little bro. I actually am intrigued by this pick. He's a project, sure, but maybe he's a better prospect here than a DE. (That being said, how about getting that VT DE Burcherette in the 7th?)

Posted by: cynic | April 29, 2007 4:16 PM

...at this point, I just give up. Forget trying to figure this team, NO FREAKING DIRECTION! Seriously, JASON PALMER!? Why not just unload Mark Brunell if we're going to accumulate driftwood.

Posted by: Zach | April 29, 2007 4:17 PM

I heard he has played WR and has decent size. Anyone think they have have him in mind as a WR? Think Randel El or Matt Jones.

Posted by: Rich from Salisbury | April 29, 2007 4:17 PM

watch em go RB in the 7th... or trade up to get the Delaware TE and give awahy next years 2nd rounder

Posted by: txskin | April 29, 2007 4:17 PM

Say what you will, Vinny Cerrato is a GENIUS. An Evil Genius!

Posted by: I'm Just Saying | April 29, 2007 4:18 PM

I believe Tom Brady was a 6th rounder...

Posted by: Wagman | April 29, 2007 4:19 PM

This young kid will play his guts out and give us 110% of what he's got. Were going to plug him in on the D-Line and he's gonna make a heck of a lot of plays for us. You guys should just trust me on this one.

Posted by: JJ GIBBS | April 29, 2007 4:19 PM

No he is slow.

Posted by: Frank (Los Angeles) | April 29, 2007 4:19 PM

cynic - as for getting bruchette... the guy was a damn good player in college, but I'm not sure if he's big enough for the pro's.

Big fan of him though, he's got a strong motor, and was a leader on last years VT team.

Posted by: Go Skins Go | April 29, 2007 4:19 PM

the nfl networks coverage of the draft has been terrible at best.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:20 PM

Okay, a QB this late in the draft is not such a waste. Besides, with the help the skins need on DL, do you really think it's available in rounds 6 or 7? These picks are really projects or special teamers. At this point, they have a better shot getting a D-lineman in FA or trades. Oh that I had the confidence that they can pick the right one without a new mortgage (an interest only mrtg at that). Oh well...

Posted by: FW | April 29, 2007 4:20 PM

Evil Genius is the funniest line I've ever read on this blog. Good one!

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 4:20 PM

This has got to be a value pick. If all of the lineman that they have on their list project to last to the 7th round, why not take the QB? Maybe down the road he'll have some trade value... ala Matt Schaub.

Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | April 29, 2007 4:21 PM

Oh c'mon guys. Guys that block and tackle? After drafting another all-pro safety and 2 linebackers? Are you guys crazy?

YES ANOTHER QB. They do really need this. AND yes they do really need some defensive ends. That will come in next year's draft unless silly Snyder sells them down the river for other teams' troubles. What they have now will do if they can cover the receivers one-on-one. They need shut down cover corners right now more the DE's. Why do you think they have been shopping their best CB Shawn Springs?

Pray that Snyder learns the patience to rely on the draft selecting free agents carefully and sparingly.

Posted by: periculum | April 29, 2007 4:21 PM

What a silly, albeit inconsequential, selection.

You can pick up a project like this on the free agent list. This is absurd.

Again Gibbs with his own personal likes or hobbies over against the more important needs of the team. Although at this stage, every pick would be a project; not much to help a team in the next two years.

But a wasted pick, nevertheless.

Posted by: HobbyHorse | April 29, 2007 4:21 PM

Nice to see the Skins add help on the D line and depth on the O line and a WR that could compliment Santana. Cuz the alert brain trust mgmt is on top of what this team needs to improve. I mean they will probably spend almost as much time teaching the game to Palmer as they did to Jason. Now its time for me to get a burger at Johnny Rockets to support this wise wise franchise and its wise wise owner

Posted by: AL | April 29, 2007 4:22 PM

Guys, we need another QB. Brunell and Collins could be out of here by training camp and we've got to think of the future anyway. Both of those guys are getting old. And it's a 6th rounder! Unless we get lucky, we're not going to fix the dline at this point.

Posted by: Dave | April 29, 2007 4:22 PM

collective mind meld. Guard Auburn Duckworth

Posted by: skinsrule | April 29, 2007 4:22 PM

Sounded like Jaws likes him.

Kiper said that he has all the physical tools but is just inexperienced.

Posted by: Cliff Huxtable | April 29, 2007 4:22 PM

As if the skins are deep at QB. This IS a need position people. We have one, count em ONE future quality QB on the roster. This was an extra pick. And yes, Brady was a 6th rounder. They are not going to address their DL need in the 6th round. I like the pick.

Posted by: monkalicious | April 29, 2007 4:23 PM

Landry and the 2 LB's made sense to me, but I'm a little surprised by this. i'm all for taking a QB every couple years hoping the constant influx will provide solid starting and backup QB's in the long-term (at a crucial position). but i'm not hearing a whole lot that's positive about this guy. maybe the redskins see something in him that others don't. might not be bad grooming a good backup QB now rather than when it's too late. still the skins need depth at other positions more than at QB right now.

i wonder who in the Redskins organization makes these decisions? i'm sure many give their input, but who makes the final call?

Posted by: Johnnie Futbol | April 29, 2007 4:26 PM

who do they have to replace Dockery? No one there is a huge whole on the O-line and they did absolutely nothing to address this problem.

Posted by: dc | April 29, 2007 4:27 PM

AZ just took the TE from Del.

Posted by: [cc] | April 29, 2007 4:28 PM

TE Patrick went one pick before.... Redskins on the clock. Go Duckworth.

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 4:28 PM

Arizona just took Ben Patrick - TE - Delaware

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:29 PM

Palmer is a project pick. The sad thing is due to the lack of picks we had this year we are arguing over a late 6th round pick. Funny thing is he's probably better than Rex Grossman before he takes a snap.

Posted by: skinsrule | April 29, 2007 4:30 PM

The QB is a position they could've filled after the draft. They didn't need to waste a pick on one. It's just ridiculous. Offensive line depth, WR depth and DL help are all more important at this point.

Posted by: Colin | April 29, 2007 4:30 PM

Tyler Ecker?

Posted by: Mike | April 29, 2007 4:32 PM

The Redskins will definitely have a top 5 pick next year - if they don't trade it away fro Briggs or a D-Lineman.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:32 PM

looks like AZ took our pick.

Posted by: [cc] | April 29, 2007 4:32 PM

Need a Colley backup. Makes sense.

Posted by: I'm Just Saying | April 29, 2007 4:33 PM

Something tells me this could be a redzone guy. He's 6'6

Posted by: Frank (Los Angeles) | April 29, 2007 4:33 PM

Need a Cooley backup. Makes sense. Wolverines-turned-Redskins. Bet the trend.

Posted by: I'm Just Saying | April 29, 2007 4:33 PM

"Need a Cooley backup."

Kid can't run. He's a two tightend player in short yardage situations.

IOW, he's a tackle playing tight end with zero chance to make it in the league.

Two wasted picks.

What an organization.

Posted by: HobbyHorse | April 29, 2007 4:35 PM

You're missing the point here guys:

Tyler Ecker: two-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference (2005-06) and Michigan Athletic Academic Achievement (2004-05) recipient

He's super smart and will probably practice his guts out during the week.

A CORE Redskin.

Posted by: Dorf | April 29, 2007 4:37 PM

Ecker is huge. Make him eat all his meals with Thomas and the Skins have their new Offensive Guard!

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 4:38 PM

By Cooley backup, I am referring of course to Ecker's Mormon background. I think this guy could really break out in this League, assuming he follows Cooley's blueprint: hook up with a couple cheerleaders and become a solid player.

Posted by: I'm Just Saying | April 29, 2007 4:39 PM

Saunders had Jason Dunn in KC.

Big blocking tight end.

That is what Ecker is.

Cooley is playing the Tony Gonzales spot.

Posted by: Cliff Huxtable | April 29, 2007 4:40 PM

Strengths:
Has a good frame and there is room to add weight...Excellent hands...Knows how to get open...Hard worker with a good motor...Will high point balls...Still has some upside...Real nice body control and ball skills...He's naturally athletic...Aggressive.

Weaknesses:
Does not have the ideal bulk that you look for...Needs to get stronger...Was not very productive...Provides little in terms of running after the catch...He is not fast, quick or explosive...Lacks a burst...Older than most prospects...Average blocker.

Notes:
Took a redshirt in 2000 and then he left school for two years to serve a Mormon mission...Was not given many opportunities to shine in the Wolverine offense...A bit of a sleeper...Hails from a program known for sending tight ends to the pros.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:42 PM

This guy is a college tackle with a little pass catching ability that Michigan moved to tight end because they didn't have anyone else. Wonderful.

Great, a college tackle-cum-tightend who's too small to play tackle in the pros and too slow to play tightend.

He'll be among the first cuts. But with his resume, he'll make a fine accountant.

Knuckleheads running this organization. Nice, gentlemenly, hard working knuckleheads; but knuckleheads at that.

Posted by: HobbyHorse | April 29, 2007 4:43 PM

No they didn't! Oh, man.

I caught one of Palmer's games this past season and he looks like the second coming of Dan McGuire. Actually, he looked OK against second tier NCAA talent, which isn't saying too much. This isn't exactly Tom Brady leading a top division I program against top division I talent.

This is a second tier QB who performed so-so against second tier NCAA talent. He does have size, good arm strength, and a famous last name. And there is also a strong family resemblance at least off-the-field.

Yeah this is a late pick. Still the last name shouldn't have even entered into the grading criteria. But somehow, I suspect it was given a great deal of weight by Dan and Vinny.

Posted by: JP | April 29, 2007 4:46 PM

This Palmer will not amount to anything as a QB in the NFL. I would rather have Hollenbach from MD. They should have used this pick to get a big reciever in hopes of him becoming the next Colston and then they could have signed Holenbach as an undrafted rookie. Also - Our FO better have something up their sleeves between now and the beginning of the season to address the D-line needs or we will have close to the #6 pick again next year.

Posted by: BIGfish | April 29, 2007 5:03 PM

All in all a pretty sh1tty draft, after a sh1tty season. Hardly any changes this offseason to a bad team, I think irony will win out and put us in the playoffs. Also, I dont care what any of the so called draft experts say, remember LT (The SD version) was supposed to be a bust. That mel kipper is a genious.

Posted by: Who needs a D-Line | April 29, 2007 5:04 PM

The best thing gregg williams can do after this draft is move to the 3-4 on defense if not after all the old veterans go down we might not have enough players!

Posted by: 3-4 | April 29, 2007 6:52 PM

not that we harp on grammar on this blog, but misspelling "genius" is probably not the way to make your point, "Who needs . . ."

Posted by: stevie in ct | April 29, 2007 6:53 PM

does anybody here have real experience in nfl front offices?..cause all i'm hearing is a bunch of arm chair owners pissing and moaning about our picks.

maybe that's what the blog is all about, but i'm so sick of the negativity i may have to double time on es!

Posted by: cosmofla | April 29, 2007 8:55 PM

cosmofla, you could look at this another way:

Why is it that the average fan seems to have a better grasp of player personnel decisions than the guys who actually get paid to make the choices for this team?

If you answer that question, then you might begin to understand why this team has only gone to the playoffs two times in 8 years during the Snyder era.

I'm still hopeful that this team delivers, but I worry that they still have big gaps to fill on both sides of the ball. They still have a lot to prove.

Posted by: JP | April 29, 2007 9:56 PM

I agree with Zach and others we seem to lack direction. Vinnie Cerato has completed his full circle display of incompetence. He comes to us runs up the cap, Marty comes fires Vinnie and gets us under the cap. Marty gets fired by Dannyboy and brings Vinnie back. We are over the cap again.

Now we come to this years draft. Why do we continue in this miserable fog of not making wise decisions on draft day. A QB?? Why?? We have no pass rush and we cannot stop the run so our answer is to pick up a safety? What happened to pressure from the edge (Which we cannot execute) and a tackle. For crying out loud yesterday when we picked the QB and the WR afterwards there were still several big tackles on the board. If nothing else draft them and cut them if they fail to perform but you might find an over achiever. I am so sick of this crap I could scream. When we drafted the QB I did. OBTW the guy who said Palmer is a big physical guy, this guy is much thinner and from what I have seen lacks the arm of his brother. And our 5'11" ILB is more like 5'9" and will get crushed...... Wow what a formula for improvement........

Posted by: mike | April 30, 2007 9:08 AM

Give Palmer a chance. He might surpise some people. He is not ready to start now but with time(like Carson), he has all the potential to shine in the NFL.
