Help Me, Please!
Hamster that I am, I was already to go nutz this morning with Asante Samuel talk.
But, jeez, then Gilbert Arenas hurt his knee...So much for this being the year the Wizards stepped up and gave Washington something positive on the professional sports landscape. Because I'm not a native, I turn to you -- where else would I go? -- for answers. What is the deal with the curse on DC's pro teams??? Jagr...Jordan...and, of course, the Redskins....Is there some sort of rite we can perform to make this stop? If it's a human sacrifice, I've got a coupla candidates....

The curse comes from all redskins fans seeling our collective souls in 1981 after 40 plus years of wandering the nfl landscape.

Well done, Ricky Bobby! Way to help out Cindy and volunteer to be the human sacrifice!

Well i dont know about a curse but there has been a cloud over DC since Mr. Cook died and someone else took over as far as the skins are concerned. With the other sports, the Nationals are well the Expos and that isnt a good place to start from, give that some time. Hockey and NBA.....who cares?

Ok about Samuels,
For the last few years I have seen Springs always plagued with injuries, so why not get Samuels? We could get Samuels and #24 and #28, and New England would get #6 and Springs...maybe even Lloyd.
Posted by: DCdangerous | April 5, 2007 12:04 PM
We've got this new summer golf tournament thing, Tiger-powered.
And the Nats at least have some spunk.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 5, 2007 12:06 PM
Have you forgotten about DC United? The team won the regular season last year and are the holders of 10 major domestic and internatioanl trophies. The season starts on Saturday and the first home game is on the 14th. Maybe you should should show up at RFK and witness the glory that is United!
Posted by: Confused. | April 5, 2007 12:07 PM
You are correct. I have forgotten about DC United.
Posted by: Cindy | April 5, 2007 12:08 PM
DCdangerous, nice try but no team would make that deal, esp. with the Skins ... and if they won't sign long-term for Samuel, they would never do it for Lloyd. Near the end of the previous post, I vomited out a three-way scenario that would be better for the Bears and great for the Pats (assuming they could afford it) -- my vomit scenario also includes a reasonable karmic slapback at the Skins for poisoning the well on franchise tagging (via their cahoots with NQ!).

Detroit GM Matt Millen really doesn't want Joe Gibbs to trade that sixth-round pick to Chicago. If the Raiders draft Russell, Millen wouldn't mind swapping his choice for Washington's sixth and another draft pick for the rights to Georgia Tech receiver Calvin Johnson.
Owner Daniel Snyder attended Johnson's workout and the word is that Gibbs wouldn't mind acquiring him, believing he would give young quarterback Jason Campbell a truly great target.
Just fanning the flames. Of what? No idea.

Arenas Out 2-3 Months
Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas will be out two to three months with a lateral left meniscus tear in his knee. The injury will require arthroscopic surgery, which will be performed today at Sibley Memorial Hospital by team doctor Marc Connell.

KANSAS city has two parts..
KANSAScity Missouri & KANSAScity KANSAS
I was born and bread in Kansas so!!!!!!!
Rock chalk, Royals ETC. And by the way Chiefs fans are the biggest fair weather fans ever!!
HOWEVER i went to the Titans game in DC last year and Arrowhead is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY louder than FedEx and FedEX had 20,000 more people in it.....get it together guys guve us some home field advantage!!
Posted by: KCskinfan | April 5, 2007 12:26 PM
KCskinsfan, Chiefs fans may be fair weather, but as long as the Chiefs' performance is minimally 'fair' (e.g., when LJ is on the field), I will NEVER pick against the Chiefs at home (regardless of any spread).
Posted by: dcsween | April 5, 2007 12:29 PM
I believe the curse that you speak of is called Free Agency. Ever since it started, the skins and Les Boullez have been in the crapper.
Posted by: etrod | April 5, 2007 12:31 PM
HENCE the homefield advantage i spoke about, they have 20,000 less people in thier stadium and are twice as loud......
But if they go 6-10 Tickets are readily available. I had to get my tickets for the skins game from Gregg Williams himself.
Posted by: kcskinsfan | April 5, 2007 12:34 PM
I grew up a Chiefs fan...I do agree that Arrowhead is a great place to see a fubball game. It's interesting that, as old as the stadium is, HOK got it so very right. Chiefs fans are fair weather...I have to agree.

Hello - We Have 3 SPERBOWLS and 1 NBA Championship!!
WTF is y'all talking about?? Why don't you move to KC, Arizona, New Orleans, Carolina, Cleveland, Cinncinatti, Tampa Bay, Seattle, Portland, etc, etc and ask them if they would like to trade histories. How spoiled can you get?!?!?!
I must be too young because and you guys must be tooo old because I was all of 11 years old when we won our last SB and I was one year from being born when we last won an NBA Championsihp. But at least we won. In the NFL only 1 out of 32 teams can when/year. Be patient.
On baseball - That's what you Learner fans get! They are so damn frugle it's ridiculous....
Posted by: ExtremeSkins | April 5, 2007 12:40 PM
The problem with Fed Ex might be the stadium design. You would think a deep bowl structure would be very loud and have good acoustics.
Also the fact that while at the game, I have to tell others around me prior to the game starting, that I am going to be loud, screaming and cheering my team on. I never cuss, but the stares I get sometimes is wierd. Why am I the exception. Old guys with headphones on never standing up.
That is the problem, high ticket prices take away the rabid fan. People come into Fed Ex high and mighty and cannot stoop to my level. Bunch of stuffed shirt MF'ers.....
Posted by: PDSquared | April 5, 2007 12:43 PM
KC,
Skins fans are pretty fairweather, too. We are, as has been previously pointed out, coked up hamsters who have been raised to believe that Redskins tickets are gold and are genetically predisposed to attend every game.
Although we are compelled to attend, however, we do not have to cheer when they perennially underachieve and blow 2nd half leads agains 0-5 teams with rookie QB's.
Posted by: etrod | April 5, 2007 12:46 PM
Ah yes, Missouri, the State that brought us Gregg Williams (and home of John Ashcroft). I ate one of the best steaks of my life in KC, Mo. Seems like a nice place to raise kids.
Someone said it yesterday, but the best scenario that Skins fans should hope for is that Adrian Peterson is available at #6 ... and that either Buffalo (#12) or Green Bay (#16) feels the need to swap in the first round and throw in the second rounder.
Nothing splashy, just vanilla flavored draft picks (hungry to prove themselves as better than the guy or five projected ahead of them) and solidly within the first and second round. DE first and CB second.
Posted by: dcsween | April 5, 2007 12:49 PM
You should also note that Fedex field week to week probably holds the largest number of opposing fans in the NFL.
Posted by: etrod | April 5, 2007 12:52 PM
That 0-5 team had a pretty good QB that day...ya it sucked that we lost to Tennessee, but my cousin who was with me is a Titans fan and 4 years ago we went to Tennessee to see the skins clash against the Titans there and we were crap and beat them at hom so .....it happens...it was a great experience!!
The skins are my team will always be my team and no matter how crap the F/O runs it i have no choice but to love the skins....
Chiefs fans are pretty rabid, i mean i got spit on at the Chiefs game for rooting at a PRESEASON game 6 years ago And when Santana broke that 60 yard screen pass for a TD when the skins played here 2 seasons ago, lets say i thought i wasnt going to make it out alive LOL.
Posted by: KCskinfan | April 5, 2007 12:53 PM
etrod, the ticket price is not only for the seat, but also for the right "not have to cheer when they perennially underachieve and blow ...."
PDxPD, the ticket also includes the right to scream your head off. I agree that -- minus the cursing (need to protect the ears of the very young and very old, you know) -- the true fan (from the root word "fanatic") has every right to scream for the team and against the other team. Go Skins!
Posted by: dcsween | April 5, 2007 12:53 PM
Agreed. The Monday night opener last year was about as loud as I've heard that place.
Posted by: etrod | April 5, 2007 12:56 PM
I dont think the Redskins true fan base are fair weather fans. We still sit there and watch in horror.
Skins fans I think are some of the most loyal...

YOu must be the golden child. Before the NBA championship in 78, the DC area had not won anything in in almost 40 years. That is patience. Fom 1981 until 1992 we had an excellent run. Maybe if you had not aged during that 14 year window, we would still be winning. Thanks for being born.

Posted by: KCskinfan | April 5, 2007 1:00 PM
Sween - The packers will not trade up to get anybody. I say this because they have a million holes to fill and need evry one of their draft picks this year.
Buffalo might be another story, but I haven't read too much about them yet.......
Skins Fans are NOT fair weather. Only the ones on Cap Hill are. I live .25 miles from Redskins stadium and yearn for one of those no shows to just give me their DAMN ticket vs. just letting it go unused. I have plenty of friends that feel the same way.....
Posted by: ES | April 5, 2007 1:01 PM
True fans are never fairweather. That's why there True fans.
I say we have a lot of fairweather fans due to the fact that week to week, our stadium is 25-30% full of fans of the opposing team because ticketholder give them up so they don't have to watch the train wreck.
Posted by: etrod | April 5, 2007 1:02 PM
if we win and win consistenly it will get loud, its also an offensive town, unlike NY or Phila. we like to see big plays and over the years in general (last 10 or so) we have been medicore to poor on O.
Posted by: Old School | April 5, 2007 1:02 PM
At the Titan's game last year there were hardly ANY Titans fans......very small amount where i was at.
Cant speak for the whole stadium but i saw more at Arrowhead(skinsfans) than Titans fans at FedEx
my two cents.

Posted by: CC | April 5, 2007 1:31 PM
Etrod,
Dont you think part of the problem with filling our 90K seat stadium has to do with a lot more than whether or not Skins fans are fairweather? For instance, the fact that it is so freakin huge! And DC happens to be a place where people come from all over the country and live there, mostly for jobs. I am a native Washingtonian and you know I brought my loyalty with me!!!
Posted by: Inigo Montoya | April 5, 2007 1:31 PM

Heard an interesting interview on sports radio in providence yesterday with Scott Paioli. The Pats draft board is done and has been done for awhile. they pay zero attention to the scouting combine and scouting services. They only care about can the player play football, and can he play in our system, thats it.They rely on their own scouts and coaches and no one else only people who truly know thier system and what kind of player will fit. That is their system, along with the philospy that each position has a dollar value, in other words a ceiling. a center is only worth x guard y linebacker z... etc, the players are just employees (temps), they are all just temps and all are replaceable, therefore we will not pay above x for that position,. we are confident in the backup or the next guy we pick will play just as well or better for the money we are willing to pay at his position. That works when you win rings on a regular basis, players are willing short term to take less to win, ... but eventually they all want to get paid, Pats system is being tested.
Winning is the only system that will ultimately work. I think thats why the other owners hope we don't start to get it right, because if you think about it, our way potentialy is the best ie we have an owner that will pay sick money, we have a fanatical fan base, we play in a high profile city, we have a rich and storied history just.... add the winning
I'm not say'n.

Posted by: Old School | April 5, 2007 1:42 PM
The Ravens do it that way, too. Not say'n, neither.

Inigo,
How long is the season ticket waiting list? I don't think filling that stadium is a problem.
I'm torn between NC and KC barbecue. I grew up on Carolina sytle, but Mrs. etrod is from Omaha, a short (kind of) hop from KC and we have on occasion made a road trip down to just for the food. I can't delcare a winner. there.
Speaking of awesome BBQ, I recommend that anyone in the DC area make the trip down to Dixie Bones in Woodbridge.
Posted by: etrod | April 5, 2007 1:50 PM
Here's how we settle this: the Etrods swing by KC and bring some Gates to DC. Joe drives up from Raleigh with some NC Q. I'll make the call.
Posted by: Cindy | April 5, 2007 1:53 PM

first blog from an avid reader of this blog...
for starters KCskinfan, fed ex field did explode on cp's first run for a td. we couldn't believe it. surely a holding penalty after the ol' counter trey? no. whew. there was a beautifully sustaining mayhem all throughout those newly installed metal rafter seats (before danny douchbag installed the hanging flat screen tv's). st. joe had returned in all of HIS glory that day.
as for all of this Reaper business from the last posting, i truely hope the skins give him whatever ridiculous amount of money he wants when the time comes...cooly as well. every team needs at least 1 player on the defense who EVER player on EVERY team fears, and ours is the Reaper. It makes me think of the play in the 05 dallas game when the Reaper gave terry glenn aligator arms and made him look like a scared little boy because he knew he was about to get lit up. or unloading on patrick crayton in dallas. wow, i'm getting all hot and bothered.

Kornheiser's got it right. Its the curse of Lez Boulez. And its spread to the Redskins. Change the name back to The Bullets, and watch the Lomardi trophies start rolling in (as they once did).
Posted by: kirkiez | April 5, 2007 2:16 PM
I hoping that little trip to Hawaii will wake up the reaper and get him all fired up for the season.
I truely belive his skills are lacking when he has to turn and run. When he can come down field on a crossing pattern or a ball carrier is when he is best.
Last year our D-line gave QB's 6 - 8 seconds to throw the ball, and we looked stupid in the coverage game.

From the ESPN story...
Both Gene Upshaw, who played in the game for the Raiders, and Steve Grogan, who threw the pass for New England, said it was a collision, not a hit from behind. There was no penalty on the play and Grogan's objection was that the hit came in a game that didn't count.
"That hit probably was not necessary in a game with no meaning," Grogan added.
For the whole story:

Lez Boullez changed their name in '97. The Skins were well into their ineptitude at that point.
I believe it is the curse of bad management that has led to the situation in DC.
I'm pretty sure the Bullets team name had anything to do with them trading Ben Wallace for Ike Austin, Rashid for Rod "the alarm clock" Strickland or the host of other ridculous personel moves they made with Wes Unseld running the show.
They will be fine, they just had some bad luck this season.
Nor did it cause the Skins to pick up Jeff George, Bruce Smith and Prime Slime and ruin the chemistry of a team that looked like it had something going.
The jury's still out on the Nats. I kind of like the approach their taking, though.
I could honestly care less about Hockey so I'll just chalk that up to Jagr cutting off the Mullet before he came to DC. (The curse of lez mullet?)
And don't forget the United, they're pretty good year in and year out and their games are a blast to attend.
Posted by: etrod | April 5, 2007 2:35 PM
i should stop flirting with the thought that the skins will somehow draft calvin johnson AND address the d-line. addressing the d-line has GOT to be more important after last year's debacle. so unless we trade away a lot of next year's pics to get cj, (nudge), draft okoye b/c he's very smart, a beast, only 19 years old, and will be even more of a beast once he bulks up for the nfl.
Posted by: heyron | April 5, 2007 2:37 PM
You're welcome, Cindy. I'll try anything to break this post-apocalyptic (5-11), pre-draft tension.
Posted by: Smokey Joe | April 5, 2007 2:37 PM
Hey PD, calm down. I've been going to games since '82. At RFK we HAD to stand up because the front row in our section was blocked by the bench. They stood up, so every row after them stood up. I pay a small fortune for my SEAT. And I like to sit in it now that FedEx makes that possible. Are you one of the guys who thinks he's God's gift to fandom because you had 12 beers in the parking lot and therefore have the right to stand the entire game, blocking everybody's view? For what it's worth, I do stand when it's called for: an important defensive stand, a big play, you get the idea. But when the other team has the ball on 2nd and 2 at their own 38? Sit down. Try and act like you understand the game.
Jack Kent Cooke wasn't the nicest human being, but he knew how to run a pro sports franchise. Nothing's been the same since his passing. As smart as some say Snyder is, I'm amazed he hasn't tried to emulate The Squire.
Posted by: Mike Diamond | April 5, 2007 2:38 PM
Cindy,
Curse, smurse. There is no curse, no jinx. It's poor management, both of the 'Skins and the Wiz. The former will give anything to win now, and the latter -- aside from the Michael Jordan fiasco -- will give anything to win (much) later.
We've got DC United to disprove the curse thing. The Nats? Well maybe next year.

Re: Amobi Okoye
Am I the only person in the country who doesn't believe this kid is only 19? I was married to a Nigerian and met many of them, there and here in the States, and I can't remember ever getting to know one who emmigrated here who used their real age on their passport and entry documents. They have invariably shaved a couple of years off of their age, and subsequently that of their children as well.
I just wondered because people always mention Freddy Adu's (I know he's not Nigerian) age with a wink and a nod, but never this kid.
Whatever... If we stay at #6, I'd love for us to get him. With some push from the middle of the line, the ends should have an easier time getting at the QB.

The schedule is prob being delayed because the coaches prob HATE the schedule. They are prob going back and forth on the issue right now...
Just like they wanted to schedule a Cowboys and Indians game last Thanksgiving for the night cap game. But Gibbs vehetmenly (sp?) resisted, so the NF of L still threw us into the the new 'MNF' on Sunday in week 2 which was still a shame. Gibbs is like 2-7 all time on MNF, which is now Sunday night......

For sweet and spicy BBQ come to KC
If you want runny vinager crap BBQ go to Carolina.

Mike Diamond. You make a lot of assumptions in your reply. I never said I stand the whole time. And you assume I dont know the game. So read my post before you retort.
And I said the old person with the headphones (specfic person a few rows ahead of me, not all) never stands, which may be because he is old. But as you state, I stand when it is needed.
All I really ask is that I dont get stares because I stand or yell. Making me feel like I am doing something wrong. I dont stand the entire time, and I am always conscious of other sitting around me if they don't stand, because it would piss me off if the situation was reversed.

As a Skins, Orioles, Wizards, and Caps fan, what have I done to deserve this? Aside from that "blind squirrel finding his nut" for each team once or twice (okay, never for the O's), what have these teams really accomplished over the last decade?
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 5, 2007 3:17 PM
We've got 3 super bowl trophies to disprove the curse of DC.
I think it's more of a curse on big name players coming to DC, which has resulted in poor performance by our teams.
Big Names who came to DC and sucked:
Jordan
Stackhouse
Jaeger
Albert Bell
Sosa
Dieon
Spurrier
I'm sure I'm missing a few here.
Point is, we do better with the less glamourous player (Rypien, Monk, Green).
We will get back on track once our owners realize they should leave the pretty boys to teams in Dallas and NY.
Sadly, that learning process may take another few decades.

I really enjoyed Arthur Bryant's, but for me Carolina BBQ is best. Heading to NC this weekend and salivating at the thought of the Q which awaits.
Best BBQ I ever had: Bridges Barbecue Lodge in Shelby, NC. Freakin' incredible.
In the interest of fairness and balance, I recommend this delicacy of the great plains: the sliders at Cozy Inn, Salina, KS. Get a dozen in a little bag and be on your way. That is some good, good stuff.

You gotta admit that even if a name change for the NBA team was 'justifiable' due to the local murder stats, the Caps and River Dogs going away from red-white-and-blue unis really sucked. Especially because the replacements were nothing special, IMO.
The Caps are righting this wrong for next season, returning to the red, white and blue. Can a return to annually breaking out hearts with thrilling annual playoff series defeats far behind? I think not. The Boulez would be wise to follow suit.

When you guys talk about BBQ - Are you talking about Pork or Beef?
Posted by: ES | April 5, 2007 3:24 PM
KC vs NC bbq. It's all good. For pulled pork I'd take NC. Ribs and brisket - KC. My two cents anyway.
Posted by: skinswest | April 5, 2007 3:35 PM
In D.C., it's gotta be about the pork!
Posted by: charlie | April 5, 2007 3:35 PM
Hey Lou Diamond Phillips, zip it or I'll break your hip! Just kidding.
I'm with PDS. I don't stand the entire game... not even close. But to get the evil eye or "down in front" comment during a 3rd and long for the D OR a big play for the O, is flat out ridiculous. Frankly, those folks need to stay at home and watch the games in their recliners.
I just think it's funny because here we are complaining (me included) that the crowd noise at FedEx is about as loud as mass at the ol' Jericho Church, yet there are so many fans who literally get angry when some of us get excited during the game.
I mean, I agree with you guys about standing the entire game. That is ridiculous and something SHOULD be said to those people. But, and I'm sure PD can concur, I have received the ol' "DOWN IN FRONT" (in an angered tone) after approximately 2.2 seconds... and sometimes it's just to take off a shirt or something in between plays.
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 5, 2007 3:38 PM
Not with me buddy. I am a chicken and Fish Meat guy. With beef on the side......
I have never had pork in my life, save for the time I was really really hungry when I was 10yrs old and the bacon was just staring me in my face.
Posted by: ES | April 5, 2007 3:39 PM
Yes I can concur Rickey Bobby. THere used to one drunk guy in that same old section, lower level just under the over hang, who used to cuss and stand the entire game. I looked back at him once and he started ripping into me. Then all those I was with stood up and we let him know either he leaves or dies!!
Not in so many words, but you get the drift. I hate ignorant peeps, and hate those who do not know what a football game is about. Down in front, etc. I actually almost got into a fight in the bathroom with 2 cowboy fans over them cussing. Very funny story. Some other time maybe. Time to punch out.
I will look for your reply Mike Diamond tomorrow, if that is your real name.
Posted by: PDSquared | April 5, 2007 3:48 PM
Well, I have never been to NC, but I'm from Omaha and I can say that the KC Q is excellent, it puts Chicago to shame, which is supposedly another well known BBQ location.
No Pork ?!?! I feel sorry for you, its like you haven't even lived yet.
Posted by: gethanr13 | April 5, 2007 3:55 PM
skinswest, great point about the general dichotomy that it's pork in the deep south and beef from Texas up through the midwest.
charlie, nicely done.
There's a little neighborhood Q place which just opened in North Portland, and it's doggone good, reminding me that you can get good Q anyplace that knows how to cook the meat (low and slow) and has good sauce. But for sheer concentration of places with high-quality Q, I'll take NC.

The first game I went to was a dallas/redskin game. I was six, so that would be in 1990 i believe. I remember we won 21-14 and there was only one dallas fan in my sight and he got booed out of the game. Thats when I knew this is my kind of team.
Posted by: dyin for consistency | April 5, 2007 4:10 PM
My first was a Monday Night game against the Indianapolis Colts at RFK. I remember being scared about the way the whole stadium seemed to sawy from side to side.
Posted by: Cheyenne. WY | April 5, 2007 4:15 PM
Unfortunately, I have never been to a game in DC, the only one that I have been able to go to was the game in Denver a couple years ago. There were LOTS of skins fans there, but that wasn't a surprise to me. It seems that there are skins fans every where, and its not too often that the fans in the midwest get a game that is relatively close, so when there is we invaid that stadium. Or at least the upper deck that I was setting in.
Posted by: gethanr13 | April 5, 2007 4:18 PM
Exactly my point. If you want brisket or ribs or whatever, I'm sure KC is just fine. But it's just cooked meat covered with sauce, like any of us could do on our Weber grills. It's not BBQ. The real deal is in North Carolina.
Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | April 5, 2007 4:23 PM
Ok, I admit I jumped to a few assumptions, probably because of something I experienced at a couple of games this year. And because there's this one guy about 3 rows in front of me who insistst on standing virtually the entire game.
I jump up and yell and scream with the best of them. But I also enjoy sitting when it's time.

I was born at Sibley Hospital, but parents made the move to LA when i was 5. One thing we never stopped hearing about growing up on the left coast was our beloved Skins.
I am now 32 and have a 3 1/2 year old boy who yells touchdown when we score and bull poopoo when the other team scores(really says bull poopoo. hasn't learned the word Sh*t yet).
I just want my boy to be as rabid a fan as my father and i have been and too see the true nature of a Redskin fan... Loyalty, Grit, and Courage to face all forms of obstacles, i.e. difficult times, blitzing linebackers, whatever they may be.

Worst fans are in LA. That's why the NFL can't quite get a team in there, no one cares.
I was wondering if anyone was going to remember the indian curse. But here is my take which I consider "original" : )
We started sucking in 1994ish. What happened? What was new? What was different? Republicans took Congress. We've sucked ever since. Especially since major power brokers were from Texas.
Notice for example that Soups was a starter around election time. Andre Carter started getting better around election time. Betts played exceptionally well around election time. We seemed to settle our kicker problems around election time. . . .

There are two problems LA fans have.
First problem is traffic. I've seen your so called "Beltway Traffic". Thats like Sunday morning traffic here. To get anywhere in LA you need at least 1 1/2 hours and thats just to go 10 miles.
Second problem is most of the people here are gang-bangers or worse gang-banger wannabees. That means they love the Raiders and always start a fight at Dodger games. And dont get me started on Laker championship rioting.
The real fans in LA stay away and watch the games from home or a bar. It safer than getting in a fight or car accident.
Posted by: LosAngeles Skins | April 5, 2007 5:04 PM
The dish frequently referred to as "BBQ" in the Southeast is pulled meat (usually pork) slow cooked to tenderness in sausy BBQ-like juices. For this, the Carolinas are king.
Common references such as "Let's have a BBQ" typify cooked meat fillets (usually beef) basted with a sauce thicker than its Southern cousin. For this, the Mid-West rules.
Then there are ribs, which are often referred to as BBQ ribs. Rib BBQ sauce has similarities to both the Mid-West and Southern BBQ sauces and was perfected in the Jazz/Blues region streching from the MS Delta to Chicago.
As a general rule, linemen like all of the above -often during the same meal. Just ask Randy Thomas.
Posted by: Pasifikawv | April 5, 2007 5:10 PM
Yo gethanr13, I'm just happy to talk about BBQ and not a bunch of change-the-name silliness.
I've had cooked meat in KC but it was a long time ago. I remember liking it, for what that's worth.
Good summary by Pasifikawv, except what you refer to as "lets have a BBQ" should more correctly be called a "cookout." If you're having a BBQ, there should be a pig in the ground and beer on ice.

My 1st game was the Sunday Nighter in the Gibbs 2.1 era (2nd time around 1st season) when we played philly and still had playoff 'hopes'.
We were actually in the game, until Ramsey overshoot Cooley on like 1st or 2nd down and threw a freakin interception to Dawkins. F*CK!

Posted by: mugamack | April 5, 2007 5:43 PM
Sometimes, the voice of Joe Gibbs can have a great impact.
Macklin
That had to be the case Thursday when Gibbs, head coach of the Washington Redskins, talked Cardinals cornerback David Macklin into accepting a one-year deal with the Redskins over three more lucrative deals with other teams. Macklin agreed to a one-year, $760,000 deal Thursday.
The Chiefs, Eagles and Saints had better financial offers on the table, but Macklin agreed to fit within the Redskins' cap restraints and accept a deal for the NFL minimum, along with a $40,000 signing bonus. The Chiefs were offering him two years of security.
Instead, Mackin, 28, decided to compete against three other veteran Redskins cornerbacks for playing time. Macklin had seven starts last season for the Cardinals and played 41 percent of the defensive plays.

I wonder if that means that Springs is gone...certainly would make sense that he might have a little trade value. Its hard to say after his injuries.
Posted by: Cheyenne, WY | April 5, 2007 5:51 PM
I see it this way.
Double Move gets thrusts into the #1 Spot since this is his 3rd year and GG has told him this is basically gonna be make or break buddy.
Smoot goes to his natural position of #2.
Macklin serves as #3.
The only way this guy decided to sign with us is if Gibbs 2.4 PROMISED playing time so he could get an even better contract elsewhere or with us next year. The guy wouldn't sign here if he wouldn't get any playing time, point blank.

An historical article snapshot:
"Updated: March 10, 2004, 1:26 PM ET
Arizona signs cornerback to three-year deal
Associated Press
National Football League News Wire
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Arizona Cardinals signed free agent
cornerback David Macklin to a three-year contract on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old has started for the Indianapolis Colts 37 times
over the past four seasons.
He was the Colts' third-round draft selection in 2000.
The 5-foot-9 Macklin was in the Colts' starting lineup for the
final four regular season games and three postseason matchups. In
the postseason, he had two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and
14 total tackles. "
But, he didn't too much w/ the Cardinals. His from Newport News, so maybe that's the reason he decided to come to the Redskins. He's a Fan???
Posted by: ES | April 5, 2007 6:00 PM
Damn this news...it's taking me away from the Masters.
Nate- Springs still has about $7.5 mil of bonus money to count on the cap at 2.5 mil/year for the next 3 years. Traded or cut June 1 means $2.5 mil on the '07 cap and $5 mil on the '08 cap.

Look here and determine for your self on Cap Savings....
Posted by: ES | April 5, 2007 6:03 PM
5'9"! He's like Darrell Green minus the speed and interception ability.
NFL Career
In his six NFL seasons, David Macklin has appeared in 96 games and started 68. Macklin spent four years in Indianapolis before signing a free-agent contract with Arizona in 2004. He was released by the Cardinals in March, 2007. Macklin reached the 2004 AFC Championship Game with Colts, but the team lost to eventual Super Bowl champion New England Patriots in that game. He scored his only NFL touchdown on a 60 yard interception return for the Cardinals in 2005.
College Career
Macklin was a three-year started at Penn State. He was selected an All-Big Ten player as a junior in 1998, the year when led the conference in interceptions with six. As a freshmen Macklin briefly played point guard for the Penn State basketball team, after the football season had ended.
Macklin studied business logistics at Penn State.
Personal Information
Macklin attended Menchville High School in Newport News. He played football and basketball for Menchville. As a freshman he guarded Allen Iverson in a basketball game, a game which Iverson scored well-below his season average.
Macklin runs a foundation named 27 Reasons (27 is his college and professional number) which aids underprivileged kids in Arizona and Virginia.

No prob Wyoming! The link has been posted previously before (to the larger site with all the cap details but the web address is complicated to remember).
After June 1st, that is..
BUT, we can cut him now and treat it as a post June 1st cap hit! Not that I am a fan of getting rid of Springs, but I am thinking from purely a business decision, which we have to do in a slary cap era.....
Posted by: ExtremeSkins | April 5, 2007 6:13 PM
Forgot, we need to trade him because he would too valuable of a comodity on the open market.
When trading him, we need to make sure he goes to an AFC team, unless we are sending him to get CJ, which might be very intersting. Do not, though, trade him to Tampa Bay. We seem to play them every freakin year since Allstot had that ridiculous TD against us in the playoffs back in 01/00. I can still picture that freakin run to the right and back to the left!
Posted by: ES | April 5, 2007 6:17 PM
Bringing in Macklin to replace Springs is just plain crazy! 7 starts last season? I'm hoping Gibbs just wants depth....after last season we definitely need depth. As I've stated many times before, having Smoot and Rogers as your starting CBs is just asking for another year like 06-07.
Posted by: Lisa | April 5, 2007 6:27 PM
sfskin -
Bad news for you (and many others here) - There has been a Republican as President each time the Redskins have won the Super Bowl. That's right - Reagan, Reagan, Bush Sr. And Reagan and Nixon were in office when the Redskins made their other two Super Bowl appearances. So, Democrats in the House and Republicans in the White House seem to be the ticket.
The last time a Clinton was in the White House, the Redskins hired Norv.
Posted by: The Mole | April 5, 2007 6:28 PM
The Redskins went south in 1993, which was Clinton's first year in office. Richie Petitbon led them to an awesome record of 4-12.
Posted by: The Mole | April 5, 2007 6:31 PM
Carlos Rogers had better be getting his game ready for next year. Springs is gone. This is shaping up to be the Skins trading up to #2 to take CJ with Springs going to Detroit along with #6. Only thing that may screw this up is Al Davis deciding to take Johnson instead of Russell.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 5, 2007 6:39 PM
Well Mole, nice theory. But like everything else associated with Bush Junior, things aren't exactly working out as planned.
Personally I think the problem is the Indian curse put on the team.
Posted by: Corkczar | April 5, 2007 6:40 PM
cdubb that is a totally stupid idea - and hopefully not what they have in mind. Al Davis has just as much interest in Calvin Johnson as he does in Russell - and he is a strange dude so might just go for Johnson and worry about their QB situation later. Then where would the Skins be? Hopefully, they remember that most of our losses last season were because of the defense....
Posted by: Lisa | April 5, 2007 6:43 PM
#1 CB - Carlos Rogers
#2 CB - Fred Smoot
#3 CB - David Macklin, playing nickel.
Strong Safety - Sean Taylor
And introducing your new Free Safety, Shawn Springs!
Posted by: The Mole | April 5, 2007 6:51 PM
Didn't say it was a great idea Lisa but that is what I am reading from this pickup of Macklin. Your bias is obvious and great. From things I have been reading it sounds like Detroit likes Brady Quinn and he will likely be there at #6. This is definitely going to downgrade our CBs if this is what they are positioning to do. Calvin Johnson better turn out to be the can't miss WR prospect so many are making him out to be if we do in fact trade up for him. I have long been an advocate of only drafting defense or a guard with later picks.
Posted by: cdubb | April 5, 2007 6:51 PM
I don't think signing Macklin means Springs is gone, necessarily. Macklin is talented, but has a history of injuries. He's not a guy to rely on.
Furthermore, he might have picked the Skins because they were the team willing to give him a one year contract. Talented CBs tend to command big bucks, but Macklin has to prove he can stay healthy and play at a high level. If he does that then he could cash in a year from now. Could be the other teams wanted to tie him up for two or three years.
Posted by: skinfanman | April 5, 2007 6:53 PM
The curse was put on us during the game? So the curse is that we would win the Super Bowl and utterly crush our opponent in that game, but then stink for most of the next 15 years? That's a sweet curse. I hope we get cursed like that this season, too.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 5, 2007 6:57 PM
Lisa -
There seems to be a lot of experienced but unemployed quarterbacks hanging around this year. It wouldn't be too difficult for the Raiders to grab one and draft Calvin Johnson.
I can't imagine that any team would try to trade up for Detroit's #2 pick until the Oakland pick is settled.
Posted by: The Mole | April 5, 2007 6:58 PM
When you put a "curse" on someone or something, what makes the curse work is the belief by the people it is supposed to affect.
Good luck trying to find 5 Redskins players who even know the curse exists, much less believe in it. (Except for Carlos Rogers maybe, whose hands and feet seem to be cursed in tandem. Double-Move/Hands of Stone.)

Posted by: skinswest | April 5, 2007 7:14 PM
Ok..the NFL Network (Adam Schefter) just reported that Calvin Johnson "quietly" visited the Raiders today and was rated an "11". They stated that if the Raiders pick Johnson it could spin the entire draft in a totally different direction.
Schefter also mentioned the Skins signing of Macklin. He said that Macklin turned down more lucrative offers because he is from the DC area and has always wanted to play for Joe Gibbs.
Posted by: Lisa | April 5, 2007 7:21 PM
Just saw Scheffter on NFL Network. He says Macklin grew up in the DC area and has always rooted for the Skins and Joe Gibbs. He turned down better offers from the Chiefs and Eagles.

great signing and GREAT manuevering by Coach Joe. Especially for the vet minimum. I think SS IS GONE and could be traded to the bucs for their #4 overall and our 6. Then again if springs is stays healthy he and Barber could form a top CB tandem.

Dave, it has been reported that Gruden loves Calvin Johnson (who doesn't?) and is very excited about drafting him. Why in the world would he give him up the best player in the draft for a CB? That makes absolutely no sense to me.
Posted by: Lisa | April 5, 2007 8:18 PM
Well, I think we can all see the writing on the wall with the Macklin signing. Springs is gone. I guess I can now hang up his jersey next to Ramsey's in the closet. I really need to get a throwback.
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 5, 2007 8:22 PM
I don't see Springs going anywhere, not without getting another #1 CB. If it does happen then it would show that everything bad that anybody has said in here about the FO and off-season decision making was completely accurate. As people already posted he is a skins fan and it seems we got the benefit of that. He is not being paid like a top tier CB, so there is no reason to cut him. We were going to sign some CB for depth at probably around the same price. Just got lucky that we got a player like him for that amount of money.

Hey kids. Been WMGO (working) trying to make it look like I've been doing so for the last six months. Kind of like flossing 8 times before going to a dental cleaning. We have layoffs coming at work on Monday, and I hope not to be a victim. Can't help but think of Mora Sr. Layoffs? LAYOFFS? You are football people, what do they call that guy who comes around, takes your playbook, and tells you you've been shticanned? Speaking of the formerly employed, anyone seen 4th floor around lately? A sad farewell to Darryl Stingley too. I know I never forgot that day. (Sorry I'm sure that's been addressed, haven't had a chance to read yet).

I gave up on buying current skins jerseys a while back. Went to nfl.com and had some made. 17 D. Williams, 81 Monk, 43 L. Brown and the latest, 51 M.Coleman. At least this way Danny does not get his hands on those $$$. (A small protest)

Why would you all think Springs is gone? Macklin is no Springs, he is a backup at best... look at what they paid him. Don't forget GW likes to use 4 and sometimes 5 cb packages.
Springs is gone if they bring in someone like Samuels. For now he is here. Remember he is the #1 CB not Smoot, not Rogers... it would make more sense to get rid of one of them.
Posted by: JoeyV | April 5, 2007 9:29 PM
We may keep Springs. If we do we've just replaced Wright and Rumph with Smoot and Macklin. Huge upgrade times two. The Redskins have four starting caliber CBs. This is a good thing. If they get Briggs they'll have five starting caliber LBs. Now let me see, they'll have how many starting caliber DLmen? One, two...
A question on Macklin is, did he just start seven games last year because he was banged up, or are his skills slipping? I think it's the former, but I'm not sure. We might have to worry about his health as much as Springs'.
Posted by: skinfanman | April 5, 2007 9:46 PM
Depends on where you get the Macklin info... Looks like he played in 14 games with seven starts according to SI.com:
ASHBURN, Va. (A)P) -- The Washington Redskins signed cornerback David Macklin on Thursday, adding depth to their defensive backfield.
Macklin is entering his eighth NFL season. He spent the past three years with the Arizona Cardinals after four seasons with the Indianapolis Colts.
Last year, he had one interception and 33 tackles in 14 games, including seven starts.

Interesting article. Thinks Pucillo will win the job at LG. Interesting take on London, also.

The biggest question about Macklin or anybody who wants to join our secondary -- and I am certain Gibbs and Grilliams include this in their evaluation process -- is whether the dude can walk it out.

why do the old folks even bother coming to the game if they dont want to stand up and cheer. take a look at any other stadium in the league that has a reputation for being loud and having a substantial home field advantage. what do they have in common? rabid fans foaming at the mouth trying to disrupt the other teams offense. look at the colts, 80 % of the plays are called at the line of scrimmage. if you can be loud enough to make them use hand signals for audibles to the backs and wrs then you have an advantage. it limits the plays they can call and gives the d a chance to pick of the signals (see recent espn story). if you can make it loud enough so that the line cant hear then you really have them. watch when teams play at KC or denver. the tackle and guard have to hold hands so that the tackle knows when the ball is snapped. that is a true homefield advantage. i understand you dont want to stand for 3 hours but the team is actually only on the field on d for like 35 to 45 minutes of those 3 hours. you say you pay alot for your seats well if im in your way that means i paid as much if not more than you did so that is bs. if you dont want to support the team by making noise while on defense then sell your seats and watch from home. the reason why fedex sucks is because of the people who always yell "down in front". does anyone ever remember hearing that at rfk?
Posted by: STAND UP ON D! | April 5, 2007 11:47 PM
Amen STAND UP ON D! The folks who were lucky enough to get seats at RFK would never think of not yelling on defense. 3rd and long, second and 2, it didn't matter. We took pride in rocking those stands and our rep. as a rowdy stadium. Since the move to "The Cooker", people are more worried about their Smirnoff Ice not spilling than the game. Stand Up is right, if you don't want to support the team on defense then sell your seats to one of the 200,000 (is that really true?) on the waiting list who will.

Why dont the Redskins get real and stop going after other people's franchise players. It would be one thing if they had some draft picks to bargain with but I think they already traded them all for a box of CHEEZ-ITs. And if they continue to try to overpay other teams problems why not go for Freeney. He is a Franchise Player at a position where they are worse than warm Pabst Blue Ribbon. His contract will be similar to the one ASSante gets and he has proven himself for 4 years. Another example of a terrible management.

Hey Cindy,
Is there a curse in KC? The chiefs haven't been or won since'69, the baseball team is awful, and the basketball team left town in 85 for Cali.
Posted by: bison4me | April 6, 2007 3:07 AM
Agreed stand up and skinabego;
It is the one way for us lowly morsels to affect the game. I am always emploring people to stand up.
Springs is not gone. Grilliams loves players to play multiples roles. Springs can play 3rd safety, in the middle of the DB's, 1st corner etc. Having a dime package with Rodgers, Smoot, Macklin, Reaper, LANDRY and Springs... match up prob's for the offense everywhere!
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 6:53 AM
WASH TIMES:
Although they appear set at cornerback, the Redskins are expected to call New England about Asante Samuel, who expressed disappointment Wednesday about not getting a long-term contract and would be open to a trade. Samuel shared a tie for first in the NFL last year with 10 interceptions and was designated as the Patriots' franchise player.
Unable to complete a major trade this offseason -- talks with Chicago for linebacker Lance Briggs broke down earlier this week -- the Redskins might make a play for Samuel.
Posted by: Rob | April 6, 2007 7:09 AM
...Morsels... must be breakfast time.
As you can gather form my post above, I think we are going after Landry. The more I hear about him, the more I like him. The anti-taylor we need... speed, coverage and hops.
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 7:18 AM
Rob, now that we have great depth at CB (signing Macklin) I really dont see us getting in a bid for Asante Samuel. (but with the Danny you never can know)
Posted by: Dave skins 87 | April 6, 2007 7:28 AM
again... i mean CB speed.... Taylor is fast for a safety
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 7:33 AM
I like this Macklin signing. Instead of buying one big name and having it flop, we are picking up solid players and expecting one of them to raise their game.
Of course now that I have said that we will trade for Samuel.
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 7:35 AM
The thought of us calling NE about Samuel is absurd. So that means we'd have Springs (you guys seem to think he's staying), Rogers, Smoot, AND Samuel all on our roster... not to mention this new guy Macklin and Jimoh. Did we sign Smoot to be a reserve?
Please don't contact them, please.
Why are we the only team in the league who believes in shelling out mega deals to your #3-5 WR's, #3-5 CB's, etc? That's what the draft is for. And that's why we'll always be within $2 of the cap max every year and have to beg our players to restructure.
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 6, 2007 7:46 AM
The Samuel thing is ridiculous! Hopefully they are just covering all the bases.....
Posted by: Lisa | April 6, 2007 7:52 AM
RB;
Until we sign Samuel I think we are doing it right. Macklin was vet min. Smoot was higher, but I think he will be #2. Rodgers is still in his rookie contract and Springs deal is good for his experience.
So # 1 - #3 are high, but you need 3 cb's this day and age. Until we get CJ, if we do, then our 1 - 3 wr are paid. You also need 3 good wr's. But after that? Patten is gone, Thrash is not highly paid.
If this Offseason stays to form, I would say we have learned. The fact we tried to get Briggs miff's me a little... but it has not happened.
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 7:54 AM
PDS,
I hear ya... I'm definitely putting the cart before the horse.
But even the thought of Calvin Johnson infuriates me. Before you guys fly off the handle, hear me out. It's not about CJ, because I think he's going to be an incredible WR in this league, it's the fact that we'd have 4 WR's on our roster with 10+ mill signing bonuses. Moss, ARE, CJ, and Lloyd...
With a salary cap, you just can't put all of your eggs (pun intended, Easter) in one basket, especially on a team with 2 stud RB's, a coach who loves to run, and a QB with 7 starts.
Look at our Dline. Look at our depth in other areas. Doesn't it make you angry that the Skins are willing to spend 30/10 mill on a #4 WR on this kind of team? Even the most passing oriented teams don't pay their #3-4 WR's that much loot. Those teams actually draft guys and let them prove their worth at the #3-4 WR position under their rookie deals. We go out and sign a Lloyd and a Patten, when a 3rd or 4th rounder out of the draft would have been just as effective, and about 1/20th the cost.
Again, it's not CJ, it's the way we operate as a whole. It's honestly sickening to watch sometimes... okay most of the time.

So since the blog is slow, and it is good friday, I will tell my story of Fed_Ex run in's with Cowboys fans that I alluded to earlier.
So we are losing to the Cowpies... 3rd quarter... go into the bathroom. First thing I notice is a lot of young children in the bathroom. Also I notice the fathers holding their sons ears.
Why, because two drunk cowboy fans were acting real ignorant. Cussing to each other in line, some S I wouldnt say to Lucifer himself. (Including Lisa's Fav... The C Bomb).
So we were losing, I was a little inebriated, so I decide to do something.
I walk up to the first one, tap him on the shoulder and said quietly to him.. "Hey man, I know you're kicking our ass, but could you not cuss? (As I point to all the little kids with hands over thier ears) There are a lot of kids here.". The guy was cool. He said defiantely, sorry, and yes they were whipping us. We joked about it a little. Very good example of a fan.
Then I went to his friend who had started jawing with a redskins fan. I did the same exact thing. Except this time there was a different reaction. He pushed me away, told me to get the F outta his face, and the funniest line anyone has ever accused me of "What, you got a 'S' on your chest"? ( A reference to Superman, also an slang term used in that year - 2001)
This fan continued screaming at me, his friend had to hold him back, said he would kill me.... blah blah. I was pretty taken a back by his rection, only b/c of his friends reaction before him was so different.
Now they were close to 40. I was 22. But the best thing was when I turned around to go back to getting in line, There were three redskins fans behind me who decided to stand with me in that situation. Also, after it had calmed down a bunch of the fathers/ people around me thanked me and said that I did the right thing, and it was good to see someone stand up for things like that... etc.
I didn't really think I was doing something out of the ordinary. I would think that most people would do the same. Especially in THAT year, when all had gone on.
Oh well, pretty interesting. Luckily they have Metal detectors at stadiums b/c I believe that guy would have tried to do exactly what he said he would. I prolly should never go to Philly for an Eagles - Redskins game, cause I might get killed there!
Happy Good Friday to those who celebrate. Happy Friday to those who do not.

Once again...I hear a lot of fans clamoring for a stud defensive lineman. We DO need defensive line help, but what makes you all think they will be so bad this year? We have a young solid player in Kedric Golston and Andre Carter in his second year. I would be in favor of the Skins trading down for a low first rounder and a third rounder to pick up D-Lineman. If they can get Calvin Johnson...I say go get him. He's a special player. We can pick up D-Lineman in the later rounds, a la Kedric Golston (6th Round).

I know I'm late, what do you all think of the skins signing Macklin
Posted by: Go Skins Go | April 6, 2007 8:55 AM
sic;
I want to know what is going on with the scouting dept. We heard they all might get canned? I wonder if that was just a fleeting report.
It also makes me wonder if they did their homework on the draft so we can find another late round player. I think that Golston was a good find. I want to see Montgomery get some more playing time. I agree that Carter will finish his comeback and play well this year. If Griff is healed, and Daniels can get some relief, then we could be okay without a first round stud. I also always worry about DL busts. I do beleive they are high in the bust category.
So yes, our D line should be okay. But we need to blitz. Grilliams did not have much D-line pass rush 3 years agoi when our D was 3rd, but he blitzed from all angles and confused the protection. Otherwise our Db's will get burned all day long.
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 8:59 AM
PDS,
Yeah, I worry about the other idiots more than I worry about me and my friends. We may enjoy some verbal debates, but we would never let it turn physical. Obviously that is not the case with a lot of people out there.
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 6, 2007 9:03 AM
"Once again...I hear a lot of fans clamoring for a stud defensive lineman."
Because we need one.
"We DO need defensive line help, but what makes you all think they will be so bad this year?"
Ah, we agree... somewhat. The fact that they had 19 sacks as a defensive unit last year, and are all a year older makes me think that they may not be much better next year. We have two young guys (1 starter) on the line and the rest average somewhere around retirement. This unit, more than any other on the team, needs help... especially after the David Macklin signing.
"We have a young solid player in Kedric Golston and Andre Carter in his second year."
You named two players out of four starting positions. That's not good. I too believe that AC will be much improved this year, but it is yet to be proven. We can't bank in it because other than a game or two, he was pretty miserable last year. And Kedric is great, but he's one of two DT's on the field at a time, and you really need at least three decent DT's to rotate. Corn is very good, but struggling to stay healthy. Saliva is a solid fill-in at best, and Anthony Montgomery is still young and rough around the edges. Our other DE spot is a HUGE question with two senior citizens rotating in over there.
"I would be in favor of the Skins trading down for a low first rounder and a third rounder to pick up D-Lineman."
We agree wholeheartedly on this one, as does just about every other regular on this blog.
"If they can get Calvin Johnson...I say go get him. He's a special player."
Very true, but we cannot afford him, nor should we. There is a special player in almost every year's draft. We've screwed the pooch too many times (in free agency) to be able to trade up again and again and pay out huge rookie contracts at the expense of depth. Think about the number of draft picks that we have tied up in single players... and then think about how many of them have been almost useless to date: McIntosh has great potential, but has been a special teamer and situational player to date: two second rounders, bLloyd couldn't catch a bus at a bus stop: a second rounder and exorbitant amounts of money, TJ Duckett: a third rounder AND he's not even on our team, etc.
"We can pick up D-Lineman in the later rounds, a la Kedric Golston (6th Round)."
Doesn't happen every time, and very hard to predict that we can get someone like that. Reference Montgomery, Anthony. Still a project, and picked a round ahead of Golston.
"Why is it that so called "fans" never want the Redskins to make any deals ever again?"
Because the Skins Front Office stinks at making deals. We MAKE them for whoever we trade with by not playing hardball. Lance Briggs!?! We have two WLBs on the roster... Calvin Johnson!?! We have one pick in the first five rounds of the draft, and something like 30-40mil in signing bonuses tied up in our WR corps already.
And we're supposed to be a run-first team!?!
Sorry to vent on you sicwidit. No disrespect meant. I just can't stand it when Skins fans (a) forget that this Front Office has done nothing but put together sub-par teams for the last 10 years and (b) feel as though critical analysis makes you any less of a fan.
If I didn't care about the team and franchise, I wouldn't give two shtis about what they did.
Don't forget Redskins Nation... don't forget.

PDSquared, in November 2005 some dude got stabbed in the bathroom at a Jets game at the Meadowlands. A random guy at the urinal was making fun of another guy's Chad Pennington jersey. So in return, the jersey wearer stabbed the heckler.
Wanna know who the heckler was there rooting for?
The Jets... yeah, they were both Jets fans.

I know they have metal detectors there. I guess they dont do such a good job. I know I have been able to sneak baggies of liquor into the stadium.... but I digress.
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 9:29 AM
Jets Nation... classy.
Anyhoo, I would say that Buck's breakdown above is spot on. The Mole (farther up) said something about the matchup problems our putative dime secondary would pose to the offense... but that won't amount to much if the QB can hang out in the pocket indefinitely, waiting for something to develop downfield. It's the matchup problem our D line faces that is the one big problem yet to address.
We need D line help so we can stop the doggone run AND collapse the pocket. Our guys last year were not good enough. One or two more solid pieces in the rotation and we'll be much better off.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 6, 2007 9:30 AM
Baggies of liquor??
Definitely voting NO on blowing up our plan for Calvin Johnson. That is not a position of primary need at the moment and we should be dedicating our meager draft picks and remaining cap space to D line, in my opinion. And we better not be thinking about a game of chicken where we trade UP and then expect to trade DOWN, that's too fraught with risk. And we better keep our 2008 draft picks in a lock box, durn burn it.
There was a coach in my middle school and high school who I'm almost sure was named Calvin Johnson. He was a gigantic dude, really massive, and the rumor was he had a short NFL stint as a lineman, maybe with the Iggles. This guy was tall but really overweight and a smoker, as I recall. (Terrific role model for the kids in gym class, no? Eh, it was a small town in Arkansas, they were probably happy to have him.)
Anyway one time Coach Johnson good-naturedly challenged the fastest kid in our class to a race -- this kid was really fast -- and absolutely smoked him in a sprint. Incredible to see.

"..blowing up our plan in order to get Calvin Johnson"
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | April 6, 2007 9:38 AM
If the skins stay pat at #6 and pick d-line or are able to trade down and pick d-line. Our defense should become solid again. We should be a playoff team.
We would give up to much to trade up and get cj. Plus he will be expensive. Who knows mcintosh could be the next lance briggs and is several years younger. We already gave up alot to get mcintosh it only makes since to play this kid and see what he can do instead of bailing out on him.

Just don't see any logic in Calvin Johnson. Especially since the roster already has, moss, ARE, lloyd, thrash and probably some that I am forgetting-What is the point.

Hey StandUp, unless you're in a suite or club level or "dream seat", your seat didn't cost more than mine.
For the record, I stand up and scream until I can't talk for two days. But I do it when it's time, when stadium noise can make a difference.
Back to the real subject at hand: Draft day is going to be nuts.
Posted by: Mike Diamond | April 6, 2007 9:57 AM
If the Redskins try and trade for Samuel, then I would say that Springs is probably gone. But who knows.
The Briggs deal is starting to make more sense to me. I know I'm in the minority here on this. But I'm thinking about stopping the run. Having LF in the middle helps, but he may not be the complete answer. Briggs would give us 5 starting caliber LBs - three pro-bowl caliber. Might be the best LB corp in the NFC. We'd have depth, and you know GW likes to rotate players. And we can bring Rocky along more slowly - wouldn't have to force him in there. And Marcus has a hip injury; when is that not a cause for concern? Then we can take a DLman at 31. It may be they think there'll be someone they really like at 31.
Posted by: skinfanman | April 6, 2007 10:00 AM
I don't know why everyone is so down on Johnson. If i learned anything with picking up Bruce Smith, Andre Carter, Deion Sanders and Lloyd it's that you go out and pay too much for people and ignore present needs at less flashy positions.
I mean the Patriots, Steeler and Colts don't do that and you see where it got them.
Posted by: Skinz | April 6, 2007 10:04 AM
Skinz;
I am a little confused. Lloyd is at the same position as Johnson. So what is the need/less flashy position with Johnson.
More to the point b/c we still have Lloyd, we should not go after Johnson and have 10mil+ wrapped up in bonuses for the 1 through 4 WR on our team.
Get rid of Lloyd, which is a cap hit and a half, then get Johnson. But as many have stated, the cap hit for releasing or trading Lloyd, plus the bonus for Johnson would kill our cap for years to come.
Posted by: PDSquared | April 6, 2007 10:12 AM
"But I'm thinking about stopping the run."
You don't stop the run at the LBs. They are 5-10 yards off the line of scrimmage. The D-line should be stopping the run, with LB support. Besides, Rocky's biggest (reported) asset when we drafted him was his ability to stop the run. Good thing he never started.
Fact: in Rocky's one start (against STL) he had more tackles than Warrick had in any single game the whole year (10-7).
Posted by: Bucktown Skins Fan | April 6, 2007 10:20 AM
The redskins signed CB David Macklin - we need a new thread.
Posted by: Max | April 6, 2007 10:24 AM
Johnson is not a need. Besides, this is a run heavy offense that we use. We don't even get S. Moss or ARE enough touches per game. We are fine at WR. Defensive line is our primary need, and we should draft a DT or DE at #6, period.
I love the signing of David Macklin (CB), this guy is a player. We might actually have some heated competition for the starting CB spots.
Posted by: Max | April 6, 2007 10:30 AM
If your cornerbacks are good enough to cover man-to-man you can load up the box and stop the run. Just about any NFL team can stop the run when they commit to it. Our problem last year was that we couldn't stop the pass, so it was to risky to commit to stopping the run, because then they would throw 80 yd TD passes. Suring up our CB position will indirectly help us stop the run.
Posted by: Max | April 6, 2007 10:33 AM
this should set in stone the focus of the redskins draft is the d line, as it should be. The redskins have a history shying away from drafting d lineman on the first day ever since bobby wilson, especially Defensive ends.
Posted by: macklin | April 6, 2007 10:54 AM
The Washington Redskins signed veteran cornerback David Macklin yesterday, adding depth to a cornerback position that was victimized last season. After trading safety Adam Archuleta and releasing cornerback Mike Rumph, Macklin is the first defensive back the Redskins have added this offseason.
Macklin, 28, began his career with the Indianapolis Colts after being selected out of Penn State in the third round of the 2000 draft. He spent the last three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, and has long been eyed this offseason by the Redskins' coaches to challenge cornerback Ade Jimoh.
-- Howard Bryant
I guess Howard was on vacation when they signed Smoot...
Posted by: Anonymous | April 6, 2007 10:59 AM
I think the point is WR is the one position that doesn't drastically change a team.
I still say we pick up that monstrosity that is Branch. If not, trade down and get one of the Top 5 DE.
You want to upgrade your LB's? Let them run run free without having to shed blockers. It's not a coincidence that the Pro Bowl LB's of the Bears stand behind the Pro Bowl DLman.
Posted by: Skinz | April 6, 2007 11:02 AM
I doubt seriously that even if we wanted Calvin Johnson that we would be able to draft him. The Raiders are already looking at acquiring McCown(sp?) from Detroit... I think CJ will go in the #1 or #2. We would have to get the #1 or #2 to have a shot. I don't see it happening. Especially since the Bucs at #4 want him. They would probably be able to trade up before we could.
First
