Leftover Draft Story
Yesterday was one of those days in this business where you go in with a plan, write one story, continue your reporting all day and by 8 pm you are completely re-writting everything due to what you have heard.
So the first story I did never saw the light of day and ended up spiked, as we say in the biz. But while I am swamped trying to keep up with the Briggs thing all other draft-related issues, I thought I would post the original story I wrote for any draftniks who might be interested.
After sizing up Landry and Okoye earlier in the week, we had planned to look at DE in Friday's paper, as it is the biggest need position on the Skins in the eyes of many. So I did a story to that end, about some of the trepidation involved in taking even Adams or Anderson that high. The Skins feel it would be a stretch to take any DE at 6, part of the reason they are so into trading up (for CJ) or down (for Briggs or additional picks).
Anyway, some of you might still want to see the info, so I figure what the heck.
Will post more on Briggs or other developments as I get the info. Could be nothing gets done until the Skins are on the clock, but either way it's going to be a long day and night for me. Hell, it's going to be a long weekend.
Anywho, here's the story (warning, this will be a longer thread as I am posting the entire story):
Twenty-four years have passed since the Washington Redskins last unearthed a dominant defensive end in the NFL draft (Charles Mann), and the need for a young pass-rushing dervish has never been greater. Coming off a season in which the club set an all-time record for turnover futility and registered a paltry 19 total sacks one might expect them to invest the sixth overall pick on an end, but even the top rated ends in this draft have caveats attached and the Redskins are among a group of teams hesitant to get burned.
Some believe that when the Redskins' first pick comes up there will not have been a defensive player of any sort drafted yet, and while there could be a few potential gems in the group of ends, and surely enough natural talent to pique scouts' interests, bust warnings abound as well. Arkansas end Jamaal Anderson is viewed by many within Redskins Park as the best of the group, according to sources, with Clemson's Gaines Adams second, but the thought among Washington officials and many others around the league is that it might be wiser to trade down if at all possible and select from a solid group of ends who should still be available.
The Redskins have positive reports on several ends who project outside the top 10 picks, sources said, led by Nebraska's Adam Carriker, who the team has identified as a premium value pick should they be able to trade down from the sixth selection. While the upside on ends like Carriker and Jarvis Moss (Florida) is not as high, they are seen as safer alternatives to some clubs who have shown more consistency and in many cases, better effort, than some of the more gifted alternatives. Defensive line coach Greg Blache left Carriker's workout in Nebraska quite impressed, according to sources, and the player's versatility, mean streak and production in college have made him a viable candidate to go somewhere in the 11-17 range, NFL sources said.
Adams is generally expected to be the first end off the board - Detroit, with the second overall pick, has very strong reports on him with Coach Rod Marinelle particularly intrigued - but for every scout impressed by his speed and sack prowess, others believe his struggles to play against the run, his lack of size (particularly in his neck and upper body) and questions about his desire make them weary. Some at Redskins Park believe Adams will amount a third-down specialist as a pro, unable to contribute much on other downs and non-passing situations, although sources said assistant head coach Gregg Williams has been more positive about him during personnel meetings.
Regardless, it would be surprising if the Redskins took Adams (6-foot-5, 260 pounds), especially with the sixth pick, given their overall concerns. Adams was inconsistent in college, did not impress during interviews with some teams. "There are some real issues there," said a high-ranking college scout from another NFL team. "He might end up as a really gifted pass rusher, but there's no guarantees and I am not sure he's a good fit for some systems. And if you try to move him around, is he smart enough to play outside linebacker? I'm not sure."
Anderson has the potential to be a "freak of nature" type pass rusher, a player who came into college as a wide receiver - with good speed- and played the last two seasons at end. He posted 13 ½ sacks last season, and at 6-foot-6, 280 pounds, has drawn comparisons to Michael Strahan and Julius Peppers by some for his size and ability. But he was a starter for only one full season, also suffered from inconsistency and, although exuding class, manners and good character, has slipped on many draft boards.
"He could be a monster," one college scouting director said, "but he might also have bust written all over him. To me it's 50-50. He's a really nice kid, but we don't see him having that edge you need. I'd be worried about him in the trenches. He's been sporadic in college and we question his toughness a little bit."
Sources said that Anderson, who wowed some at his interviews, even admitted that the nasty edge is something he must develop and he is truly working on it. But the Skins and other teams would worry that it may not be something you can really develop, and one NFL scout said beyond Peter Boulware he could not remember too many impact defensive ends who were not mean and rough in the trenches.
Despite that, Anderson, whose father Glenn is deaf and was a candidate for the presidency of Gallaudet, was clearly a force in what many consider the best conference in college football, he will be just 21 at the start of the season and on a team as pass-rush hungry as Washington might make an immediate impact even if just as a situational player at first. Assessing the future of ends is tricky - there was considerable debate over how well soon-to-be superstar Dwight Freeney would fare in the NFL when he left Syracuse - and Anderson could end lingering through the middle of the first round.
Carriker was originally slated to go in later in the first round as well, but scouts from several organizations said his strong work at his workout, his meetings with teams and the quality of his play in college have helped his stock. He has drawn strong feedback from San Francisco (11th overall) St. Louis (13), teams like Denver might trade up to get him and sources said that if the Redskins traded down below 15 to get him they would likely lose out as Green Bay (16) and Jacksonville (17) have him rated as high as the second-best end available.
Carriker (6-foot-6, 292 pounds) could play tackle and perhaps outside linebacker as well, and while not spectacular in his play, has a steady level of production and should be able to contribute long-term. He lacks panache and more of a straight ahead rusher who relies on power and strength - which is why some teams see him more as a tackle in the NFL - but his versatility and tenacity are assets the Redskins prize.
"We love him," said a top college scout whose team is not in the market for an end but who has watched Carriker repeatedly. "If you watch the film you can see he's a player, and he's somebody who you want to play with in the trenches. If you put him in a phone booth with Anderson or Adams and told me only one is coming out, I'd be willing to bet you anything - I'd bet my daughter - on Carriker coming out of there. If we were in a position to get that kid, we'd be trying to do it."

Trade for Briggs and draft the best available lineman at 31. It is the only scenario that makes any sense. You get one proven commodity in Briggs and potentially a nice complement on the line at 31. A win-win scenario.
Posted by: Rick G. | April 27, 2007 12:28 PM
What are we gonna do with ROCKY? If we trade for Briggs we also have to throw in Rocky and get the Bears 2nd round pick also to make this deal.
Posted by: G | April 27, 2007 12:29 PM
Whew, definitely a strange year for the skins and the draft. Seems like half a dozen scenarios they could follow. Trade up/down, stay put, trade for Briggs, etc... Glad I don't have to speculate on what they'll do as part of my job.
Posted by: skinswest | April 27, 2007 12:31 PM
I hadn't heard all those negative comments about Adams before.......after his workout people were saying he was solidified as the top d player in the draft..........so sounds like if we move back, Anderson and then Carriker are the options
nothing too new there, Anderson is upside and potential bust, Carriker is a safe pick with a lot less upside. I haven't watched Anderson play at all, so can't really say much.

"To the best of Jonathan Vilma's knowledge, a Redskins fan began a blaze of speculation that spread to Weeb Ewbank Hall, where Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum last week was asked about Vilma possibly being traded. Tannenbaum said Vilma, who led the league in tackles two years ago but struggled last season in the new 3-4 defense, remains a Jet and added, "I'm glad he's here" and "I expect him to be here." In trying to douse the flames of conjecture, Tannenbaum managed to fan them by saying that no player, with the exception of punter Ben Graham, is untouchable. So it is that Vilma, the 12th overall pick in 2004, goes into tomorrow's draft faced with the prospect that he might again hear his name called."

Jason,
What do you think of the theory that this is part of the lying game and that they're making you the mouthpiece to tell people that Chicago is interested in trading up to 6 so they can increase the value of the pick?

Does it sound like JLaC sees the Briggs deal as near-completed?

Well, how else is Vilma going to hear he's been traded; after all, he spends all off-season on the roofs of New Orleans.
Oh, that and pushing kids on swings.

In terms of a new linebacker, Antonio Pierce relayed a great line he lives by that he heard from Gilliams. Shows his respect for good coaching. (We should not have let him go)

At least he has a sense of humor. Maybe he can replace Vinnie.

Just my take, but I'm sure the Skins have not divulged what they are going to do with Jason - or any member of the media. It's all total speculation.

JLC,
Leftovers taste better anyway...
Again it looks like the team will try to acquire players that will have an immediate impact (Briggs). The Skins are better than their record, but really the team doesn't seem positioned to take it to the show.
Carriker sounds like he might attack in the opposite direction a la ST.

Old School asked about greatest moments in our rivalry from the opposing point of view. It was easily 12/16/1979...
If they needed extra momentum, Riggins provided it with just under seven minutes left to play. Breaking outside at his 34, Riggins outran linebacker Mike Hegman, bounced off a tackle attempt by Harris 10 yards downfield, then won a footrace with Dennis Thurman for a 66-yard touchdown dash which upped the Redskins' lead to 34-21.
That lead held until Randy White's recovery of Clarence Harmon's fumble with 3:49 left. Suddenly, the Cowboys were no longer playing dead.
Staubach needed only three plays - a 14-yarder to Johnson, a 19-yarder to Hill, and a 26-yard scoring shot to Springs over the middle. Springs took the pass at the five and literally dragged cornerback Ray Waddy into the end zone as 2:20 remained. The 59-yard scoring march left Dallas trailing, 34-28.
Then the defense came on to give the Staubach-led Cowboy attack one final chance. It was all the Eastern Division champions needed.
Good times!

thanks guys for the advice on what to do with my built up 3 hours of goodwill.
what i did to get those three hours:
i got up at 5:30am for 8 weeks.
when i came home at 5:30 PM i take over the kids, play with them, feed them, give them bath and put them to sleep.
on the weekends i take over the kids completely.
even when i'm working out, doing yard word i'm watching the kids.
actually i haven't taken a shti by myself for about 6 months.
haven't been out with the guys in a year. while she goes to get her manicure, pedicure, massages every 2 weeks and hair every 3 months and is routinely going to dinners and lunches with the girls.
[and yes, she's smoking hot. why else?!]
and i think i'll take 4-12's advice and go play 9 and maybe listen to ESPN radio while playing.
skins want CJ but they can't get him because ATL, and Tampa are more desprate to get him than the skins. So i think Briggs is happening.
BTW, those of you concerned about Mcintosh's role here when Briggs comes. Mcintosh is included in that deal. What skins are negotiating is getting something in return for Mcintosh. like a 2nd or a 3rd round pick.
Sfskin, welcome to the east coast! flying back sunday or monday? tough. i hope you flew jet blue. with directv and all...

#2, game 1, 1992
Winning the battle on offense, defense and special teams, the Cowboys' 23-10 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday night was stunning in its efficiency. The big plays came from everywhere, from Alvin Harper and new millionaire Michael Irvin, from Danny Noonan and new Cowboy Charles Haley, from Issiac Holt at one end of the punt team and Kelvin Martin at the other.

In that 1992 game, I was landing at National Airport and got in trouble because I refused to turn off my portable TV during landing, and then they discovered the six pack of Heineken I'd smuggled on and consumed. I was met by two FAA agents in the concourse who said I was at risk of arrest. I said "who cares, we're up 9-0 already!".

With Briggs you get a proven commodity who also is able to help when you need to cover the Eagles Brian Westbrook. He along w/McNabb make the Eagle offense go. If the Skins get Briggs they finally have a LB to cover and possibly shut him down. With that #31 they could draft DE Anthony Spencer who most Big Ten Lineman have voted as the Toughest Lineman to block. Spencer is not high on a lot of boards b/c he's a tweener 6'3" 260. The Eagles used one of their tweeners this year a LB named Cole who recked havoc and was a big reason they improved even w/o Kearse.
Posted by: SKINSRULE | April 27, 2007 1:02 PM
I don't see that Briggs would help that much. We need DT, DE, OL and DB help. WR, RB, and LB are all set. I really hope this is all just a game.. If they take Briggs, HE WILL DO WORSE IN DC THAN CHI TOWN B/C HE WON'T HAVE THAT GREAT SUPPORTING CAST.
Let's hope to move down from 6th.

No, no, no Briggs. He's overvalued as a result of playing on that D where every play funnels guys away from Urlacher toward him. We can't lock up a ton of salary at LB and ignore D-line & secondary. We already have enough salary tied up there -- look at how well pouring endless cap space into WR has worked out --let Rocky play and spend the money elsewhere. Trade down from 6, pick up a second round pick so you might have guys in 2 years who can fill in for the overpaid guys who break down with age. Sigh.

Bruce was awesome. got home at 3am,
hit play on the vcr and watched start to finish, wild scramble in the endzone touchdown danny copeland.... andre collins picks aikman at the goaline. great game, great night.

Wedding day = draft day can be okay. On my wedding day we pulled off the Ditkabingus and landed Champ and Jansen. That was awesome.
And there's some kind of subtle moral message about what's Really Important.

All you guys dumping on Briggs, how many times did you watch him play? Here's what Peter King wrote about the trade:
"the Redskins don't have a crying need at linebacker, and I don't expect them to make a trade, swapping the sixth pick in the first round and either MacIntosh or Lemar Marshall for Briggs and the 31st pick in the draft. But I think you need to realize why the Redskins would ponder this move. The one thing you must remember is that Lance Briggs is an excellent football player, one of the five or six best linebackers in football. Last fall, watching the Bears, I saw how they used Briggs and Urlacher interchangeably at both middle and outside linebacker, and Briggs was every bit the factor in many of their big games that Urlacher was. He can take on guards in the hole and he can play side to side as well as almost any linebacker playing today. I think he's worth the big money. If I were the Redskins, I would certainly trade my sixth pick for Briggs and the 31st, but throwing in the good linebacker would kill the deal for me."
Mind you, it wouldn't be my choice, either, but Peter King's rarely endorsed anything the 'Skins do and he can see the logic in the trade.
Posted by: KK | April 27, 2007 1:23 PM
I was wondering about that 'small neck' comment--can someone tell me how that would relate to football skill? Or is it just a stand in for 'not beefy'?

Have you seen Tawny lately? Unless I'm mistaken she was on a 'reality' show recently, and I wasn't impressed. Now back in the day, she was very attractive.
As far as Carriker is concerned, we need the mean sum-b*tch on this team. Trade back to #9 and get him.
Why #9, because Atlanta wants him, and combined with this:
"Industry sources in the Minnesota area tell us that the Vikings are strongly believed to be planning to pick safety LaRon Landry with the No. 7 overall selection in the draft."
Posted by: Greg(Boston) | April 27, 2007 1:26 PM

KK, it just smells fishy to me. We made MLB a priority and landed London School of Economics. Then NOTHING on the LB front, and we all shift our focus where it belongs, on the D line (followed by safety and OG). Then Next Question created a possible trade out of thin air, and suddenly we're engaged in a serious trade discussion?? Come on already.

Posted by: jm220 | April 27, 2007 1:34 PM
Nate,
It's only 1:30. You back from lunch already?
I think it's just pre-draft lying game noise, myself, to try and get some action going. Make the others think we're going to trade with Chicago so that they'll pay more for the pick.
But, if it does happen, Peter King's on record saying that we've gotten a good deal. When was the last time that happened?
He thought that Campbell was one of the five best in that draft, but said the 'Skins paid too much to get him. If he really was one of the five best -- and we'll know in a few years -- then he was a steal.

I like that MV Dame is kind of ambiguous.
Especially because 'dame' is an archaic term that no woman I've ever known would use to describe herself.

From Peter King's Mock Draft:
"What Matt Millen wants to do is trade down, obviously. He might find a partner in Washington owner Dan Snyder. They talked at length Thursday. The most likely scenario has Millen taking Johnson even if he can't deal him. Who should I give you guys in my mock draft?" I said to Daniel Snyder on Thursday. "Give us Calvin Johnson," he said with a big smile. OK. Now, sir, you've got to go get it done. If not, don't be shocked at a rekindling of the Lance Briggs deal, or this 19-year-old Louisville phenom."

The word 'dame' makes me think about noir, tough guys, gumshoes. Jim Thompson, James Ellroy, that kind of stuff. I really dove headlong into that genre for a while and dug it immensely, though I would catch myself doing tough guy talk sometimes.
If any of you like to read books and stuff, I read an awesome book called "Berlin Noir" by Phillip Kerr.

Re Briggs, sure, he may be ok. There are views other than Peter Kings, for what it's worth a dc paper other than post has had the following views:
"He wouldn't be as productive in their defense," the scout said. "Chicago's defense is designed to have the weak-side linebacker never be blocked and make every kind of tackle and play known to man. In [the Redskins' defense], the weak-side linebacker is taking on offensive tackles. He's not going to be the player for them as he was or will be for the Bears."
also:
"Nothing against Briggs, who is a two-time Pro Bowl player who has never missed a game. But he's a perfect fit for the system he currently plays in; he would be a square peg in the Redskins' round-hole-type defense."
and:
"I watched a tape of the Redskins-Giants game (Week 17) when word broke the team was interested in Briggs. The Redskins used three linebackers on 39 of the Giants 61 offensive snaps, two linebackers on seven plays and one linebacker 15 times. Rocky McIntosh, in the spot Briggs plays, was on the field for only three of the 22 plays where the Redskins didn't use three linebackers.
London Fletcher in the middle will be an every-down backer and Marcus Washington, because of his threat as a pass rusher, will also be on the field on third down. The way to keep Briggs on the field is to use a look on passing downs that uses Washington as a stand-up defensive end/pass rusher. Not an ideal scenario.
2. Acquiring Briggs will add a solid tackler, but it won't solve two big problems: Creating turnovers and pressuring the quarterback. In 64 career games, he has 3.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles and six interceptions.
3. How little confidence do the Redskins have in McIntosh? Can they possibly be giving up on him after one season and two starts? My take is that they weren't thrilled with McIntosh's development last year (I mean, he couldn't beat out Warrick Holdman) but the coaching staff still thinks he can play. The Briggs pursuit has been led by The Danny.
4. Doesn't the owner remember what happened with Adam Archuleta? He thrived in Lovie Smith's scheme in St. Louis, but didn't fit Williams' scheme in D.C. That should scare Snyder away from anybody with ties to the 'Tampa Two' philosophy, especially linebackers and defensive backs. "

It is a sign that the 'skins are taking the draft more seriously that they are putting out so much misinformation about what they are doing.
Doesn't anyone notice that the 'skins have put out at least three separate "news items" saying they are interested in Johnson, Landry, AND Okoye?
Only one pick, so they can't take all three, folks. Most of that is misinformation in an attempt at stirring the pot for trading DOWN.
They either trade down OR pick Okoye. You read it here.

It certainly wouldn't be the biggest mistake the FO ever made.
Posted by: Stumped | April 27, 2007 2:03 PM
Setting aside the likelihood of this happening, but would you be happy with the following scenario? Redskins trade down twice. First, to a 8-14 range, picking up a second or third round pick. Second, they swap that 8-14 pick and Rocky M. with the Bears for Briggs and 31 pick. I read that the Bears would like to move up, but not as high as #6. The gains for the Redskins: Briggs, 31st pick in the first round (D Line or WR), and a 2 or 3rd round pick (D Line, O Line, Corner, Safety). The gains for the Bears: a higher first round pick (the best available player), Rocky M (currently a downgrade from Briggs, but a decent prospect that may flourish in the Bears' system) and no need to worry about Briggs sitting out the season.

i am no genuis. We have done well at the top bailey, samuels, arrington, jansen betts, smoot, cooley, dockery. but have gotten zero out of the bottom way to many misses or guys that are ok at best. need to come up with some players from the bottom portion of the draft. and we simply throw away picks in deals giving us fewer turns at the crapshoot all together.
that being said we are not a draft only team and will continue to look at all avenues of getting players, which i am on record as saying is not a bad thing. its not the strategy, its the execution of the strategy.
It makes sense to get players who are in their prime already playing in the league, yeah you gotta pay them but its not my money, we get around the salary cap colapse every year. its just really hard to pay top dollars to a boy to play a mans game you just don't know if he can. in alot of ways i would rather give it someone you know can play, then wait for this years draft crop to develope and 5yrs from now grab some one from a team that can't or won't pay them. in the meantime you have to make sure you getting real good players of your own from the middle and lower rounds. top down and bottom up.

Old School, there is a persistent notion that under Gibbs 2.0 there is heightened pressure to 'win now,' over and above what is expected in the NFL. He may not stay the full five years, has had serious health problems before, not wanting to tarnish his legacy, and so forth.
Have you perceived any difference in the team's conduct vis-a-vis personnel which you would attribute to this pressure?

Posted by: MrSpartan | April 27, 2007 2:26 PM
Actually, given his ever present-ness here, Sean Taylor should post the 50,000th

LB, I wanted to point out that you missed sfskin. She's a great dame.
Speaking of sfskin, and in response to calebt17 and others...
There's no rest for the weary. Once we hit that 50K mark, sfskin has already bellowed the war cry for 100K by Opening Day.
Oy.

"Sean Taylor would eat the phone booth with all 3 rookies inside of it" AMAZING!!!! This draft is deep at spots we need major help at. I know it's hard, but resist the splash. Trade with miami or buffalo...drop a few slots. Then trade with denver who wants to get in that range..they over pay like we do. Grab more picks even if you use the extra picks to get your taget players in the rounds 2-4 range a la Cooley. Grab 3-4 D linemen and a Gaurd maybe...Take a flyer on a big reciever. Our QB is young, all our skill position players are young, Rocky, ST, CR, KG...We have some youth. Keep up the trend and maybe we can be 8-8 to 11-5 every year for 5 years and pick up a piece here or there get on a run and get back to the big game...this boom or bust is getting so old.....As for what will actually happen? We will pick Quinn and trade Campbell to the Dolphins who will pick Okoye at 9 who will sack Quinn 3 times and concuss him in a 35-9 week one loss....Cheers

NFL CONSIDERING ANOTHER REGULAR SEASON GAME
Mark Maske and Cindy Boren of the Washington Post report that the NFL is considering the possibility of adding a seventeenth regular season game in order to accommodate the league's desire to play overseas games.

After starting my work day 3 hours late (after SWEARING to myself not to post until I finished some things), I forced what I have to get done into the next four hours.
I'm all draft-talked out. Spent. Rumor-talked out, even rumors I made up myself. Seems like we've been through the best-case scenarios and the worst case scenarios (though something tells me there is always something worse waiting to happen out there).
I really really really really don't want them to screw this one up. I can be happy with whoever comes in (trade, draft, whatever). I will embrace idea of the newcomers whoever they are -- whether its Briggs, Vilma, Anderson, Okoye, Branch, Landry, Anderson, Adams, Carriker, whoever. That part is all good.
The "screwing up" part means letting someone get the better of them this weekend, esp. Bears, Broncos, or even the Lions. JUST MAINTAIN CURRENT PLAYER/PICK VALUE. For cry eye loud, just break even on the weekend and hang onto next year's picks!
At this point, I'm happy to talk about the current roster, games over the past season, upcoming games. I might even ignore that the draft is happening ... just to make my last mojo push so that cooler heads prevail. I don't want The Owner picking guys. I don't want Vinny picking guys. I'm not even sure I can trust St. Joe to exercise some skepticism. Frankly, I want happy if BUGES had the final word. Better yet, a coin toss. Just DON'T SCREW THIS UP!

Boris,
I'll trade you next years 50,000 and this years 48,000...
Posted by: JoeyV | April 27, 2007 2:32 PM
I think the Redkins may finally have this right. You cant draft a DE with the 6th pick. Get a solid LB and a couple of picks and end up with a serviceable DE anyway.
We may not be the prettiest girl at the dance...but at least we're dancing

One other draft comment. Please look out for Buster Davis, the LB from FSU. He is so tight and angry. He goes unmentioned because he isn't that tall, but he is ridiculous. Whoever gets him, is getting one of those Pro Bowlers that everyone wonders why he didn't go high in the draft. He is awesome.

Nate
no change, skins have never been a total rebuild type of franchise.failure to secure the franchise QB to build around and the with exception of the ritchie/early Norv years we have been borderline + - 8-8 type of team which reinforces the we are close type thinking
being really really bad for a strecth 3/4 yrs? would or could change the thinking because it might be apparent even to them that we are not close. but as soon as you think that at least based on recent history we make a playoff or near playoff run
so gibbs as coach /president doesn't change the franchise in the way they have allways gone about each offseason. the big (potential difference is Campbell)

MrSpartan, the subtle innuendos follow, there must be something inside ...
Next week, we will have a lengthy period of bloggery, both "good catch" and crying/gnashing of teeth like Sean Taylor tackled our familes.
Then nothing ... till maybe the June 1 cuts and release of the Simpsons movie. I'm prematurely nostalgic.

Governor, in response to criticism about his height, Fletcher had a great quote -- something like "last time I checked, the running back comes through a hole in the line that's wide, not high."

Questions for all you techno guys. Wife and I want to set up our computer, and her laptop, with the whole video/audio capability thingy. I know about Skype. Is that the best? How about web cams? Which ones work well? Someday I'll learn how this whole technology thing does what it does.

Actor Robert Conrad spoke menacingly in a battery commercial, "I dare you to knock this off". Then Sean Taylor suddenly appeared. No one has seen Robert Conrad since.

Buster Davis of FSU is the new incarnation of London Fletcher. Similar size, similar motivation.

If we can finesse a 2nd rounder from the Bears on top of #31 and Briggs in exchange for Rocky and #6, we have got to do it. The people who have seen Rocky perform on a regular basis (Gibbs, Grilliams) since drafting him seem to lack confidence in him. He didn't exactly light up the field when he finally got on it. Briggs is unquestionably a significant upgrade over Rocky, and there is the potential to get two very productive players at #31 and #63, compared to only one quality player (albeit a potential superstar) at #6.

JLC, before we hit 50,000 I'd like a contract extension and don't use the franchise tag on me or I won't post!

4-12 Logitech has pretty cheap cameras that are adequate for what you want to do. They also take pictures in the 1.3 megapixel range. Once you have selected the camera almost any chat program will work: skype, AOL, Trillian, MSN Messenger, CamFrog.
www.newegg.com has a good selection.
Peace.

Has there been any speculation of the skins adding a player to the trade with the Bears.

This might be a dumb question, but can the Skins actually afford signing Briggs (to the big $ he wants) and sign another first round pick without restructuring some current roster contracts or cutting a veteran player or two in June?
Posted by: CC | April 27, 2007 2:55 PM
OK, serious up, though.
We won't get anymore out of the bears than what they offered the first time. Why, if they had agreed in principal to do the thing and then thought they could get Rocky too, would they give up anymore tha the original offer.
Hey, Rocky too, Yo' Adrian.
See, spent I tell ya
Posted by: Larry Bud | April 27, 2007 2:55 PM
we'd have to cut some folks, CC. Like prolly Springs and mayhap Washington.
Most likely Washington actually.
Posted by: Larry Bud | April 27, 2007 2:57 PM
Hey, are we going to have to change the SMOOOOOOOOT thing at games this year? GIIIILLLLIIIIIGAN just doesn't roll off the tongue.

CC,
"This might be a dumb question, but can the Skins actually afford signing Briggs (to the big $ he wants) and sign another first round pick without restructuring some current roster contracts or cutting a veteran player or two in June?"
Of course, they can afford to...mortgage the future, amp up the signing bonus.
But when you're only looking ahead to the next season, where does that get ya?

So I'm just walkin down the street mindin my own bidness, mindin my own bidness walkin down the street and BOOOOOM, Sean Taylor dropped down out the sky and killed the M-Fer.

Move on over to the new post, my man...

"Don't screw this up", these are the Skins on draft day, I expect nothing less!!! I'm trying to figure out ways we can squander next years draft picks because we don't have any this year. Until the "brain trust" at Redskins Park can run the team like big boy franchises do (Eagles, Pats, Colts, and Bolts)and build through the draft with young players over high priced free agents nothing will change and 8-8 will look good.
If you can move the pick for 2-3 round picks, do that because getting Briggs who is surrounded by really good D and system could be another Armstead or Trotter. If there are no bites make the pick and pray.

My kids will be done with testing next week and if the school board hasn't let me go by then I may not see you chaps for awhile. I'll actually have to teach and what not.
May see you all this evening though. Depends on Larry Jr. and Mrs. Mellman
Posted by: Larry Bud | April 27, 2007 3:06 PM
Larry Bud -
The Bears cheapness has been exposed once again by the Briggs deal. Now they have a very unhappy player who wants to leave and other team members siding with him publicly. They have created a situation where they are almost forced to do something that they said they would never do - either pay Briggs with a new contract or get rid of him for the best available price, even if that price continues to go down.
The alternative is to keep an unhappy player who sits out half the season. That's not much of a choice.
Posted by: Otter | April 27, 2007 3:11 PM
Do you guys know there is a new post by Jason on the Briggs deal? Time to refresh and move to the new thread.

you mean to tell me that if we didn't have this glorious blog that we never would have read that story? sweet tuxedo-t-shirt-jesus... thank goodness we have the blog. that was good stuff!
and is there any chance that after the draft or a year from now we can find out who would bet his daughter on that phone booth fight? hahahah great quote.
Posted by: Treehorn's Notepad | April 27, 2007 4:31 PM
Terrible pick! The Skins will lead the league in sack futility for the second consecutive season in 2007. Why is Gregg Williams the true head coach of the Skins? 2004 - Taylor; 2005 Rogers; 2006 McIntosh; 2007 - Landry. Ridiculous. We need talent in the trenches on the defensive line. I'm outraged.
