They Stuck With the Board - It's Landry

The Washington Redskins utilized the sixth pick on safety LaRon Landry today, selecting the highest rated defensive player on their draft board. Landry does not address the club's biggest needs on the defensive line, but the club hopes he will aid in the sagging pass coverage and provide another big-play presence in the secondary.

Landry, who was the second player from LSU selected in the top six, will eventually form a pairing with safety Sean Taylor, who was taken fifth overall in 2004. It is rare for a safety to be selected that high - much less by the same team in a four-year span - but Landry's talent and potential ultimately made him too enticing to pass on. The Redskins believe he could play either safety position and be deployed deep in coverage, or close to the line of scrimmage to aid the pass rush.

The Redskins explored numerous trade options leading up to the draft, including rekindling a long-discussed deal for Chicago linebacker Lance Briggs, and many within the organization were hoping they could trade down to acquire multiple assets to target several positions following a disappointing 5-11 season. Washington has just one pick today - the Redskins' next selection is in the fifth round - and wanted to identify ways to stockpile more. Completing such trades are always difficult, however, and few teams have displayed serious interest about moving up to the sixth pick.

Landry, 22, is a Louisiana native and his brother Dawan, is a safety with the Baltimore Ravens. LaRon Landry returned to LSU for his senior season despite being a top draft prospect as a junior as well. He started 48 straight games to end his college career and had 12 interceptions and eight sacks at LSU. He was a first team All American as a senior and gives the Redskins what may be the first secondary in history with so many top-10 draft picks.

Cornerback Shawn Springs was the third overall pick in 1997 (by Seattle), Taylor was fifth overall by the Redskins in 2004 and cornerback Carlos Rogers was the ninth-overall pick in 2005. The Redskins next pick int he fifth round, then pick twice in the sixth round and once in the seventh round.

We'll see what kind of fit he is with Taylor, how they mesh and if they meld. Also, if Landry ends up with a biggest contract than Taylor - very possible - it would make waves, too, because Taylor has been troubled with his contract since shortly after signing it.

Actually kinda glad they didnt trade down -- I gotta go mow my lawn!

Posted by: HaikuMan | April 28, 2007 1:18 PM

Really? This should be interesting...

Posted by: Mike | April 28, 2007 1:19 PM

2nd!

Posted by: jlin | April 28, 2007 1:19 PM

well, here we go again. not taking a player we need for the sexier pick. lets all just get ready for another sub-500 season

Posted by: blah | April 28, 2007 1:19 PM

they love the flashy "race-car" player -- why they wanted CJ, why they get the big free agents. but the line stinks and the d won't improve until it does. can't believe they failed to trade down. this lined up perfectly for them. i'm sure landry will be good, but won't matter if he is making 10 tackles a game they are going to lose a lot of games...

Posted by: beat cal | April 28, 2007 1:20 PM

Terrible pick, now we have two guys at safety who can't cover. Another year of no run defense and no pash rush.

Posted by: AZ Skins Fan | April 28, 2007 1:20 PM

he should look good on the highlight reels. chasing the opposing receiver into the end zone after a QB with all the time in the world picks the secondary apart

Posted by: dissappointed | April 28, 2007 1:21 PM

He should help our secondary, but what about the other needs? The did not trade down, but at least we cannot fault them for making a boneheaded trade.

Posted by: M | April 28, 2007 1:21 PM

Now if we can add 6 inches and 100 pounds to him then we fill a need

Posted by: craig8 | April 28, 2007 1:22 PM

Herman Munster could slide to the Fish without them even trading up. Damn.

Posted by: SMACK | April 28, 2007 1:22 PM

disaster!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 28, 2007 1:22 PM

At least our secondary is going make lots of tackles!

Posted by: Anonymous | April 28, 2007 1:22 PM

Horrible pick!!! get ready to trade next years draft picks to get a d lineman we should have dafted in the first place.

Posted by: KillinTyme | April 28, 2007 1:22 PM

anybody want my skins tix? they seem to forget that they have no pass rush. They wil suck again this year.

Posted by: jim | April 28, 2007 1:23 PM

L2!

Posted by: ArtMonkToTheSticks | April 28, 2007 1:23 PM

I'm sure that he will be good for us but it doesn't help us pressure opposing offenses though. Unfortunatly these guys will have to cover WRs for about a minute because we sure don't pressure the qB's.

Posted by: Frank (Los Angeles) | April 28, 2007 1:23 PM

mel kiper thinks taylor can play coverage while landry will play the box...i don't think he's ever seen taylor play coverage..

Posted by: sigh | April 28, 2007 1:23 PM

Oh no, we suck again!

Posted by: Bobby Boucher | April 28, 2007 1:23 PM

Ha-ha-ha. I can't stop laughing.

Posted by: Antonio Pierce | April 28, 2007 1:23 PM

Look at the bright side guys, we didn't make the Briggs trade!!!

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:24 PM

Now the Vikings have their pick between Quinn and Peterson. The other teams probably did not feel there was a player worth trading up for, unless somebody wanted Landry.

Posted by: M | April 28, 2007 1:25 PM

You mean, we didn't make the Briggs trade yet.

And our 2008 picks are definitely in danger now.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 1:26 PM

marshall faulk is a redskin hater!

Posted by: priceisright | April 28, 2007 1:26 PM

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. This management team is the worst in the NFL. Gibbs and company should just go away.

Posted by: JRS | April 28, 2007 1:26 PM

Great pick! We needed better coverage, and the young guys we got on the line last year are up-and-coming. I know some guys aren't happy about it, but look, you can't fix a team with one draft pick.

Posted by: Dave | April 28, 2007 1:27 PM

At what point are the 2009 picks in play? Because we should start worrying about those as well

Posted by: Lee | April 28, 2007 1:27 PM

I'm pushing 50 and can cover better than Taylor and Landry. I'll play for the vet minimum and promsie to stay away from Taylor's ATVs ...

Posted by: Darrell Green | April 28, 2007 1:27 PM

I simply don't trust Redskins management when it comes to personnel decisions.

Posted by: mart | April 28, 2007 1:29 PM

Should hav take Okoye - that is the biggest need. Not a safety.

Posted by: glasgowskinfan | April 28, 2007 1:29 PM

Only entertainment value now left in this will be to see how far Quinn falls. I hope he has to sit there till 5:00.

Chester Taylor and Peterson will run for about 300 yards aginst us next year.

Posted by: cdubb | April 28, 2007 1:30 PM

I'm not mad at the Landry pick. We needed a playmaker, and this guy definitely seems to be one.

Grilliams has been manufacturing pressure (successfully, until last season) from spots other than the Dline. And, Griffin and Daniels should be healthy. Carter, Golston, and Montgomery should be improved. And, Highway 57 of the linebacking corp is gone, which also helps. So, we may be okay -- especially when you factor in that everyone should actually *know* the defense this year.

If we can just teach a couple of our DBs not to bite on play action, we should be much improved this season.

Posted by: JustMe | April 28, 2007 1:30 PM

Is anyone else wondering if the Redskins were offered a chance to trade down and the management team that brought us a 3rd round pick for T.J. Duckett wasn't competent enough to accept it in time?

Posted by: Joe The Fan | April 28, 2007 1:31 PM

he is a game changer....He better start with sean Taylor at the beginning of the season!!!

Posted by: Alexander | April 28, 2007 1:31 PM

Who's the best FA de?

Posted by: priceisright | April 28, 2007 1:32 PM

JustMe - I agree, with those sort of playmakers in the deep, I'm sure Grilliams will come up with all sorts of plans to take advantage of their athleticism.

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:32 PM

The biggest need is at DE, not DT. Okoye would have been a part-time player with the current roster.

Goodbye 2008 picks in the late 1st or early 2nd round to get a quality DE.

Or, Goodbye Springs to get a Day #1 pick for a DE.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 1:33 PM

Can't help but wonder if there wasn't a way to turn that pick into Jamal Anderson plus a 3rd round pick.

Posted by: Joe The Fan | April 28, 2007 1:33 PM

What's wrong with trading next years first round pick every year???? We would have 2 this year and still have one every year hear on out!!!!

Posted by: Rob | April 28, 2007 1:33 PM

If I'm the ATL, I want Quinn because its only a matter of time before Vick is playing with Pacman

Posted by: craig8 | April 28, 2007 1:34 PM

Dont love the pick but its not the end of the world....worries me that they play the same way...

and by the way Taylor covers better than some on here give credit for, last year wasnt full picture, look at three years....the playoff year he covered excellent...

New plan....trade a WR and 08 mid round pick to Bucs for Simeon Rice....

Posted by: chris Larry | April 28, 2007 1:34 PM

Give them a chance. The season has not started. You have no clue what they will do between now and September.

Posted by: SkipInVA | April 28, 2007 1:34 PM

I love Sean Taylor. God knows I do. But, that boy doesn't put in the mental work that he should to optimize his talent, especially with the football instincts he displays when there are people around him who know what they're supposed to be doing. From what I've read and seen, Landry does put more effort into the mental part. The match might work well.

Posted by: JustMe | April 28, 2007 1:35 PM

I figured it out. Mighty Might can market Taylor and Landry, sell more jersys and other merchandise! the sexy pick sells. All about the money, screw the fans!

Posted by: Lee | April 28, 2007 1:36 PM

High-priced contracts for rookies are killing the trade up/trade down action. No team wants to move up and have to write a bigger check for an unproven player. There are probably teams trying to trade out of the 1st round completely, with no takers.

It's time for NBA-style rookie contracts in the NFL.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 1:36 PM

Best way to use the draft. Best guy there. Replaces Ryan Clark where Archuleta failed.

Welcome trolls. Back to Extremeskins.com with ya.

Posted by: dcsween | April 28, 2007 1:37 PM

Think it is time for me to trade away picks in the 2008 or 2009 draft now.

You know, trade a #1 for a rd 2 pick today,. so we can draft a DE or DT!

I'll be dead by the time 2009 comes around and won't have to suffer the consequences.
Let the next coach pay the price then.

Posted by: George Allen | April 28, 2007 1:37 PM

2 Strong Safties Didn't work last year and it will not work this year. They could have traded down to Atlanta, Miami, even the Bills and gotten Jammal Anderson or possibly Okoye. I'm sure they could not have gotten lavish trade offers but to not fall a couple spots back and get the D-Line more explosive is plain clueless. They will continue to struggle against the run and their 3rd and long package ( which is what Gregg Williams invisions with the Landry pick ) will hardly be on the feild because of 4 and 5 yard chunks on first and 2cd. This is a classic Skins pick and its exactly why they will never be a true contender untill a sound GM is in place for 5 or more years. Jason Campbell better be able to sustain drives and keep that Defense fresh or this run defense will cave by the 3rd quarter. Awful Pick. Peace~

Posted by: Jay-Hog | April 28, 2007 1:38 PM

They keep showing Quinn everytime he doesnt get picked, then they showed him and his girl.Too funny.I dont like his Dawson's Creek a$$,he seems too cocky, like he's got this whole NFL thing figured out.Eat him up

Posted by: dawglbs | April 28, 2007 1:38 PM

Ocho-Ocho - The NFL needs to take a leaf out of the book of the AFL (Aussie Rules) Here, all 1st round draft picks have a set contract, all 2nd round have a set contract etc.

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:38 PM

Damned if they do, damned if they don't. Some of you will bash the 'Skins no matter what they do. Our entire defense needs help and we got arguably the best defensive player in the draft. If they had drafted Okoye then Landry turned out to be a beast you would have bashed them for not taking Landry. Maybe they didn't have any good offers to trade down. Unbelievable, some of you obviously only get on this blog to bash the 'Skins.

Posted by: Frank (Maryland) | April 28, 2007 1:39 PM

This was a good pick. The secondary and linebackers are now very stacked with playmakers. Landry can cover while the Reaper plays up on the line of scrimmage. Hopefully the LB's will stay healthy as well. D-Line and Guard will be addressed tomorrow. This doesn't feel like the usual rationalizing I go through every year to convince myself the skins are gonna do well. There is some electricity in the air, and it feels good...

Posted by: Uncle Heyron | April 28, 2007 1:39 PM

And the Medicine Woman continues to slip! I'm loving it. Too bad the damn Dolphins will put him out of his misery and steal my remaining joy.

Posted by: JustMe | April 28, 2007 1:39 PM

Atlanta just likes to have players named Jamaal Anderson.

The new Jamaal will have to have a new nickname and dance, however.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 1:39 PM

How's the Irony, Atlanta took Jamaal Anderson, can anyone say Dirty Bird??

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:39 PM

This may be a great player, but it is another example of why Joe Gibbs should relinquish his position and let a real GM run the personnel department and not the coach, which has NEVER proven successful. Joe is a great coach, organizer, strategist and good at evaluating in camp players...but he has not demonstrated the ability to work the personnel system off the field. Bring in a GM and get rid of Cerrato.

Posted by: Edgar | April 28, 2007 1:40 PM

Hurray! The pick is in, we got Landry, no crazy Briggs trade, we can rest now.

We even hit the 50k mark... it's been a good week!

Congrats to all!

Posted by: JoeyV | April 28, 2007 1:40 PM

J LaC,

Could they still trade Landry and pick later in the round? Perhaps swap with New England's two picks and use those to draft one guy and get some later round picks? Rodney Harrison is getting up there in age and I can't remember who there other safety is? Or now since they drafted Landry, the six spot is not seen with the same value? We have stockpiled safeties for some reason.

Posted by: straubjmu25 | April 28, 2007 1:40 PM

I worked so hard to win back in the day.
Now my time is running out; I feel tempted to trade next years choices to move up and trade for a DE or DT!

I need to pray I will not give in to this temptation. I must do what is best for the team for the longhaul, but I feel the pressure to do what I can to help me win now.

Posted by: Joe Gibbs | April 28, 2007 1:40 PM

Interesting choice. I would have liked to see them take Brady Quinn just for the pure entertainment value. We suck anyway right?

Posted by: Tom | April 28, 2007 1:41 PM

The Pats other safety is Eugene Wilson.

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:42 PM

disappointing. Everything fell into place to pick up a couple of extra picks today. Maybe they should have consulted with Bobby Beathard. Leading up to the draft either ESPN or NFL network did a shoot on the Beathard years and the great draft picks they made. Look at the success his years as GM equated to.
Heard a rumor on ESPN that Danny's b$$ch Vinny is gone after the draft? Can anyone confirm. He should have been gone a long time ago.

Posted by: candy | April 28, 2007 1:42 PM

ugh. ugh ugh ugh.

Posted by: burgundy warrior | April 28, 2007 1:42 PM

What if Miami take Okoye?? How far will Brady fall??

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:43 PM

I think the Redskins were trying to ensure they could sew up last place in total sacks and run defense again. Looks like they are well on their way to accomplishing this. :)

Posted by: skinsfanno9 | April 28, 2007 1:43 PM

I agree with JustMe and kost. Williams will use this guy to get pressure on the QBs and with his size and speed he could cover or help stop the run. There could be a problem with he and Taylor recklessly committing to big hits but I don't see much of a downside here.
The key again will be health on the D-Line. They will now have enough depth in the secondary but with early injuries on the line some of the same problems could occur.
I don't think the skins are done yet, and I see a free agent on the line coming in the near future.
Was I the only one considering the pickup of Quinn as a temptation?

Posted by: Ian | April 28, 2007 1:44 PM

kost,

I hadn't considered that. You just put a smile back on my face.

Posted by: JustMe | April 28, 2007 1:44 PM

Frank I feel ya! The team can only change the feelings that the fans have by winning. I hope they team continues to make positive changes and turns this think around. They are nto going to winit all this year. So why not give them a shot to try an build a great defense. Maybe the add another Dlineman later this summer and go into the season with a nice D squad and players hearthy that were not last season. '

Perhaps someone can fix the Dano-copter to crash when Dano's aboard? Hopefully, Vinny-the-nit will be aboard too, which is likely since he's always attached by the lip to Dano's extremities. Snyder's made a joke of the franchise, He should change the name to Snyderskins!

If the fins take Okoye here, Brady coule drop all the way to 23 at KC!

1 PLAYMAKER DOWN!Now go find some more. Here Vinny, here Vinny, That's a good boy! Go find me another Playmaker.

Posted by: SKINSRULE | April 28, 2007 1:48 PM

Here' something interesting:

CZAR'S FRONT OFFICE TAKE: Owner Daniel Snyder kept telling folks he would have the ammunition to trade up in order to get Calvin Johnson. Well, it hasn't happened yet and probably won't. The Redskins were offering aging cornerback Shawn Springs in a package to move up for Johnson and found no takers. I love Landry as a productive player. He hits and he can cover. But a lot of scouts downgraded him because they didn't believe he had the smarts to make the defensive signal calls at safety. Yes, Landry and Sean Taylor will be a fierce safety tandem, but they are a pair of Jack Tatums and not a Larry Wilson or a John Lynch. Washington is also considering a trade with the Patriots for one of their low first-round picks. The Redskins would swap their first-round pick next year in order to take a pass rusher like Jarvis Moss of Florida.

Posted by: bangkokben | April 28, 2007 1:49 PM

It's funny to hear Mayock busting on Quinn.

"I could make that throw!"

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 1:50 PM

Also interesting take:
SCHRAGER ON THE SCENE: LaRon Landry, my favorite player in this draft, goes six to Washington. To watch a Landry highlight reel and not wince at some of his hits is one of the harder feats around. A rousing "LSU" chant starts. With Sean Taylor and Landry manning the middle for Washington, the NFL may see it's first head decapitated next year. Not sure if that's a good thing -- could create a few worse headlines than the whole "Make It Rain" stuff. Between those two guys at the safety spots, there may be very few NFC East opposing receivers running crossing routes. Landry's a four-year starter and the brother of Ravens safety Dawan Landry. At LSU, Landry was the star of one of the country's top-rated defenses, recording over 300 tackles in his college career. 4.35 speed -- strong as an ox. Now all the Redskins fans go home. They don't have another pick until the fourth round. Kinda like getting all your gifts on the first night of Chanukah for them today.

Posted by: bangkokben | April 28, 2007 1:50 PM

The pick is in and Quinn isn't on the phone. Wow...

I agree 100%.

STUPID!STUPID!STUPID!STUPID!STUPID!STUPID!STUPID!STUPID!STUPID!STUPID! Pick!

No offense to the Landry kid, but this team NEEDS!NEEDS!NEEDS! a D-lineman in worst way and they draft a saftey?!?!

With the SIXTH pick even!!

Someone tell me, did the kid at the Skins draft table make this pick?

This organization is SO freakin disfunctional, I'm SO ashamed to be a Redskins fan. :(

How in the world is a safety going to help add a pass rush or stop the run? If you don't have the horses up front it doesn't matter who is behind you.

Why are they so stupid??

Glad you liked the ecard Jason and sorry I'm ranting. I can't take this organization anymore, they deserve to lose.

Will someone PLEASE slap some sense into Snyder and Gibbs??

PLEASE!!!!

I can't see guys, is Brady crying????

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:52 PM

Yes, Brady Quinn is crying.

Let Ginn come across the middle with Lando and the Reaper there - LMGO!!!

I didn't realize that Wes Welker meant so much to the Dolphins that they used a 1st round pick to replace him.

Good morning, P Diddy. : )

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 1:55 PM

kost,

He's not crying, but he looks like he wants to. LOL

Posted by: JustMe | April 28, 2007 1:55 PM

Don't get all excited over all this...3/4 of these guys will never contribute in a meaningful way in the league anyway.

Double G gets two big safeties back in the secondary...along with Smoot, Springs, and Double Move, they've addressed a huge weakness. It frees him up to go back to his blitzing game.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 28, 2007 1:56 PM

The funny thing is the look on Quinn's girlfriend's face. She's not saying a word. Just kinda staring forward with a blank look on her face. She's probably mentally calculating the declining bonus for each slot he drops. LOL

Posted by: JustMe | April 28, 2007 1:57 PM

"Williams will use this guy to get pressure on the QBs and with his size and speed he could cover or help stop the run." -- Ian

Wait a sec... that sounds awfully familiar. The Skins'll definitely sew up spending the most guaranteed dough on the safety position over a two-year span. Wonder how long that record will last?

Posted by: worstSeat | April 28, 2007 1:57 PM

Suspicious about this pick.

Posted by: straubjmu25 | April 28, 2007 1:58 PM

Exactly, Diddy. The more I think about the Landry pick, the more I like it. If he can become the signal caller back there, it will be perfect.

Posted by: JustMe | April 28, 2007 1:58 PM

Did you see the WTF look on Dawsons Creeks face when the Dolphins made their pick?Priceless.

Posted by: dawglbs | April 28, 2007 1:58 PM

Thanks Ocho! I'm a bit fragile today, but it's sunny and warm, so my ass is out of bed and I'm heading out to go enjoy all the little sundresses. They're like tulips out here in the Pacific Northwest...all the women hibernate all year, and then, poof!, they pop up out of nowhere once Spring rolls around.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 28, 2007 1:58 PM

I reckon Brady should've gone fishing with Joe Thomas.

Posted by: kost52 | April 28, 2007 1:58 PM

Not to be redundant but...

"With Sean Taylor and Landry manning the middle for Washington, the NFL may see it's first head decapitated next year. Not sure if that's a good thing -- could create a few worse headlines than the whole "Make It Rain" stuff. Between those two guys at the safety spots, there may be very few NFC East opposing receivers running crossing routes."

Posted by: bangkokben | April 28, 2007 1:58 PM

the best entertainment of this draft now is watching the look on Brady Quinn's face as he slides down the board and loses money! It serves him right being so full of himself. I think he will be a big bust anyway.

Posted by: candy | April 28, 2007 1:58 PM

I know it's mean, but I have to say I'm enjoying watching Brady Quinn tumble through the draft. And no, I don't feel sorry for him. He'll get his millions yet. There's nothing quite like hype to make you root against a guy. In fact the only thing more overhyped than Quinn is his alma mater, Notre Dame.

Posted by: Joe The Fan | April 28, 2007 1:59 PM

I thought the same thing about Quinn's girl. Though she has to be relieved that he is not going to South Beach. I am not sure she would be around very long if he had. DC maybe, but not SB.

Posted by: Ian | April 28, 2007 1:59 PM

Maybe Quinn's "gal pal" is a rent-a-babe and he is upset about the cost of the additional hours he is having to pay her.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 1:59 PM

this is such a sad day in skins history. it's become a brady quin show.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 2:01 PM

Wake up Ray. You take the best player available with a pick that high, and Laron Landry was at the top of their board defensively and was available. That is the pick to make if you can't trade down, and obviously they couldn't trade down.

If MLB, LFB, does his job; everyone will be lined up to make plays.

Posted by: bangkokben | April 28, 2007 2:02 PM

Hey, where's Nate?

I'm willing to take Brady's girl off his hands.

TK is bloviating.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 28, 2007 2:02 PM

hahaha...brady quin will drop another 10 spots hahahah

Posted by: Alexander | April 28, 2007 2:02 PM

chit you should wish something like that on people. Have you been hurt somewhere in life?

Posted by: SkipInVa | April 28, 2007 2:04 PM

Nate hasn't been in yet. I thought he said he was going to be here. So who knows? But he did just move in to his new place, and he had trouble with getting Comcast installed. Maybe the wireless bars don't open early enough in his new neighborhood.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 2:05 PM

Before we bash Redskins for not trading down, we should ask how many teams traded down today. Landry is one of the safer picks at 6. If you want to talk about a bad pick, talk to Miami fans.

Posted by: M | April 28, 2007 2:05 PM

Thank goodness there are other teams to make our picks look less moronic. Thanks Dolphins!

Posted by: Lee | April 28, 2007 2:08 PM

M,

Agreed. I think it was Ocho-ocho who hit the nail on the head about the salary devaluing the top spots. Harder to trade.

Posted by: bangkokben | April 28, 2007 2:09 PM

Hey, ESPN is listing Adam Archuleta as a "Key Addition" for the Bears.

Posted by: P Diddy | April 28, 2007 2:09 PM

Brady Quinn, Clipboard Holder.

He probably doesn't realize how lucky he will be if he gets drafted by a team that already has a starter. Sure, he could have started at Cleveland, but his bronze bust would have been in the mud near the 15-yard line.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 2:11 PM

Since we didn't draft a pass rusher, perhaps the logic is now to kill all the opposition receivers.

Posted by: Throwback | April 28, 2007 2:12 PM

hey long time no blog p diddy...welcome back...were the black activists after you?

Posted by: chris Larry | April 28, 2007 2:13 PM

Mayock says maybe 14, 17, or 23 for Quinn.

Posted by: Ocho-Ocho | April 28, 2007 2:13 PM

Maybe Brady will be available when the Bears pick. Then this would all work out for him. Of course, his girlfriend would be long gone by No. 31....

Posted by: Cindy | April 28, 2007 2:14 PM

Sounds like a plan, Throwback. I'm not saying it's a good plan but a plan.

Kinda reminds me of the body bag game where B. Mitch had to be QB.

Posted by: bangkokben | April 28, 2007 2:14 PM

And they listed AA as the key loss for the Redskins. Should've listed Dockery.

People bashing the pick need to take a step back. We are probably not 1 player away. Okoye would have taken some time to develop. None of the DL prospects were worthy of #6. Coverage next year will be so much better allowing blitzes from all over. Landry would look a whole lot better if we had picks in the 2nd and 3rd to get a DE/DT and a G to replace Dockery. So you can blame the FO for that but lets not bash this kid till we see him play.

Posted by: cdubb | April 28, 2007 2:16 PM

Great pick!
With all the talk about the D-line needs, I think you forget how bad our secondary was last year and had ZERO depth. This is just as much of a need as our d-line.

You guys laugh all you want at me slipping. At he end of the day I'll still be a millionaire with a hot blond by my side while you are all dating the Palm Sisters.

Posted by: B. Quinn | April 28, 2007 2:37 PM

Actually, they could have done a lot worse (like trade for Briggs). Contrary to what some posters here have said, this does fulfill a definite need. Fox is a good special teamer, but a backup safety at best. Stoutmire is older than dirt (in NFL terms), and is also no longer starter-calibre. And Prioleau is coming off major ACL surgery, so he is a question mark. They actually did what most teams that draft well do--imagine that--which is take the highest rated guy on their board when their turn came up. Hopefully, they will still address the D-line, either by trading one of next year's picks for another pick today, or with tomorrow's picks, or by trade or free agency. Maybe it's a case of low expectations on my part, but staying where they were and taking the best guy on their board was probably the best that I could have expected them to do.

Posted by: rbpalmer | April 28, 2007 3:21 PM

This was a good pick! You idiots are never satisfied!!! They didn't trade away next year's picks, and this was the best defensive player and at a position of need!!! You can find solid lineman in later rounds (Golston,Montgomery). Give the Skins some credit...they didn't pay 18 million for a guard, they held the line with da' Bears, and they got the player they wanted.

Let's just wait and see...damn

What time is Gibbs due to helicopter into Fedex for the party?

PS: How does Snyder make money off the draft day party?

Posted by: Roger C | April 28, 2007 4:12 PM

Hey JLC, you think they did this with the intent of trading Taylor? If Taylor is unhappy with his contract, given his off-field troubles and what was written about him last year about not communicating with other team members and the need for team mates to contact Ryan Clark to see how to get through to Taylor... why not trade him?

Posted by: Redskinrex | April 28, 2007 10:16 PM

"You take the best player available with a pick that high"

Drafting a safety on the 31st worst defense at #6 is like drafting a FB at #6 on the 31st worst offense.

Safeties are a dime a dozen, there's only like 3-4 in the whole league that are dominate.

Either way, if you don't have a defensive line it doesn't matter who behind them. The Redskins did NOT improve with that sixth pick. They could have taken any of those d-lineman and have been better, but not a safety.

Sean Taylor is a really good safety, but without a d-line in front of him he was toast last year.

Also remember G.Williams defense was exposed last year. Yet again everyone will be running right up the gut on the Skins.

I'm plenty awake, thanks.
