Web Chat Today
Hey guys, still trying ot stay hot on the draft trail. I am doing a chat on Washingtonpost.com at 11, so look forward to answering all of your questions (or fibbing my way through the really obscure draft kids I may get asked about).
I'll try to post more stuff this afternoon if I get it. Anything to aid Nate's quest for 50,000. That dude is my hero.
Cheers.

So I have a question for you, Jason LaCanfora, since I won't be able to make it to the LiveChat; I found this quote from your piece on the presser somewhat disturbing:
"Snyder has attended the on-campus workouts for several top players, and said Tuesday that he flew to Louisville in recent weeks to watch Okoye (Snyder was also on the sidelines for wide receiver Calvin Johnson's workout at Georgia Tech)."
So here's the question; how many other NFL teams' owners go on scouting trips?
And why should any skins fan trust his ability to judge talent?
Posted by: Larry Bud | April 26, 2007 7:30 AM
larry bud,
jerry jones comes to mind, and maybe weird al davis.
snyder has zero cred as an evaluator of talent
Posted by: cosmofla | April 26, 2007 7:33 AM
Cosmo (kramer?),
Are there any sane owners that come to mind that scout players?

So it looks like the night shift is clocked out. Poor Nate, moving and questing for 50K. I'm gonna do mest for ya, buddy!!!
After reading the presser article more carefully, I was even more dismayed to hear Snyder commenting on how important character is. Not that I have a problem with character, but I get the sneaking feeling that every time Danny Boy utters the word the forces of Karma set themselves even further against us.
"We're way ahead of that curve." Yeah, right...

And why should any skins fan trust his ability to judge talent?
Posted by: Larry Bud | April 26, 2007 07:30 AM
Snyder? Judge football talent? Surely you jest. Snyder has no such ability. His football talent begins and ends with signing checks for large amounts of money. But his presence at any workout may give some credibility to the Redskins' alleged interest in a player, regardless of whether they are truly interested or not. Is he savvy enough to use such a tactic as a deliberate ploy to mislead the competition? Maybe. The jury is still out.

I think we are in a great position to trade down in this draft. Not to mention the Quinn or Peterson teams that will come calling. But with these two, ultimately the other teams behind us know we do not want these players. However, with these two, there are teams farther down the board who would have to pony up more picks to get to them. We just need teams in between us and them that also might want them.
But Okoye and Landry will get us some calls also. Mainly b/c teams know we will take one of these two players. So ATL moving up could work. But really, this is how I see it playing out.
At #6, Washington Redskins take Amobi Okoye... (cheers form all of the RI fans of Okoye, many posts about how good of a choice it is)
Then we wait, make sure that ATL can get Landry, if he falls to them, we already have a deal worked out with them.
At # 8, Atl takes Landry.
Somewhere down in the middle of round 1 you hear from Rodger Godell;
"We have a trade to annouce. The Washington Redskins Have traded the Rights to Okoye to Alt for the rights to Landry and a 3rd round pick."
THe question reminas, will we be the Giants after Manning, or the Chargers?
Posted by: #6DoubleEL | April 26, 2007 7:56 AM
kost-
Someone suggested "Orca" as the nickname for Okoye, as in Orca Okoye. Orca is a killer whale - perhaps a somewhat apt description.
Okoye is not related to Christian Okoye (Nigerian Nightmare) as is occasionally reported. He admitted to making up that story years ago.
Posted by: Pulp | April 26, 2007 7:59 AM
LL-
Things may be changing quickly. There are reports now of Atlanta moving up to get Johnson, and has the picks to pull off such a deal. Meanwhile, Peterson was re-injured in the Fiesta Bowl and may need minor surgery soon, which will delay his availability to practice/play. Buffalo may be interested in trading with KC for LJ. Etc, etc.
In other words, the trade down possibilities look less certain than ever. It will probably be Draft Day before it all gets worked out. Best hope is that one of the higher teams will do something incredibly stupid. (Detroit is the odds-on favorite.)

I've said this before, and I'll say it again now.... Joe Gibbs, the Great Space Cowboy, had the opportunity to put our idiot owner in his place, BUT DIDN'T.
Napolean worshiped this guy growing up. If Gibbs, at any point, had said "stay out of it or I'm leaving"... well my bet is that Napolean would have stayed out of it, to include attending draft workouts, participating and forcing AWFUL free agent moves and trades, keeping his racquetball bug-eyed freak buddy, threatening players in order to give back cap space, etc.
But now, Gibbs has only created more of a monster by NOT putting his foot down from day 1... and unfortunately for us, he is/was the ONLY PERSON IN THIS WORLD who had the ability to alter Napolean's ways, but he didn't even try. In fact, our legendary turned mediocore to bad coach, actually bought into his reckless ways.
But hey guys, not to worry because Vinny "has a plan" and Gibby "thinks we're going about things the right way UP HERE" and Napolean is "proud of where we are". Just the quotes you would expect to hear following a 5-11 season.

24 hours x 60 minutes = 1440 minutes/day
1440 x 2 = 2880 minutes between now and Saturday morning, 8:30 AM EDT.
One post per minute will get us to the goal and leave time for breakfast and one final mock draft update on Saturday. Simple stuff. The quest begins in 5 minutes.

Not to poison the draft discussion but we have not discussed the special teams and kicking game at all. This is one of those spots that can provide you with a few more points a game and a good one alsters your playcalling. What is our feeling about Sashimi? Is he our mean? Hall has missed 26 games over the last 3 seasons ad is not relyble injury wise.
Posted by: MrSpartan | April 26, 2007 8:26 AM
Forgot about punting. We give frost a lot of ribbing but the dude punted over 80 times last year. That is a pathetic offensive effort. Think he is solid...at least until he his not. Regarding kicking, I agree with dcsween, we can always pick up a marginal kicker midway through the season but very unsatifying.
Posted by: MrSpartan | April 26, 2007 8:29 AM
It's too bad that Snyder apparently decided to emulate Jerry Jones rather than Jack Kent Cooke on "How to be a successful NFL owner". When Gibbs leaves, Snyder will probably name himself as General Manager, figuring that all those player workouts he attended will qualify him for the job, along with all of Vinny's expert advice.

Then I get on the scale and I'm actually up a pound. Look for this season to be VERY similar, ie "4-12" doesn't have to change the name yet.

Hall is gone; Suisham appeared to be an improvement during his late-season trial. It would be great to get some kicking competition for training camp, but it's hard to justify using a pick on a kicker. The one exception might be Nick Folk, if he is available in the later rounds. He can punt and place-kick. Forget that Crosby kid - he seemed seriously overrated and shaky under pressure when I saw him.

Don't mind Orca at all.
Posted by: kost52 | April 26, 2007 8:40 AM
I can't remember the last kicker the Skins had who could actually put it in the endzone on a consistent basis. And no, I don't mean kicking it out of bounds on the 5 yard line and having it skip beyond the end zone. Lohmiller? His strength naturally tailed off as he got older but he's the only one I can think of. Even if we can't draft a kicker, I'm sure there will be some undrafted kickers (sleepers) that the Skins could bring in to at least look at.

It would also be good if some of the later round draft picks had good ratings on special teams work (blocking, gunning, etc.). Teams filled with older players are at a disadvantage during punts and kickoffs.
Posted by: Pulp | April 26, 2007 8:42 AM
I agree that we don't use a pick on a kicker and Sashimi was an acceptable kicker. He only had 11 TD kicks (made 9) last year so an unproven commodity. Here is another sad statistic...in 8 games only 14 XPs. WE NEED MORE TOUCHDOWNS!!!
Posted by: MrSpartan | April 26, 2007 8:44 AM
Punters? Oh yeah - Matt Turk will probably be a free agent again soon, if St Louis hasn't cut him already. (It's a joke, people.)
Posted by: Pulp | April 26, 2007 8:45 AM
Ahhh, Matt Turk. Brings back memories. One punt would be 65 yards and the next...6 yards. I couldn't watch the TV when he was punting out of our endzone.
Posted by: CC | April 26, 2007 8:48 AM
Frost likes to mix up his punting yardages also. Seems like Redskins punters always have that issue. When was the last time the Skins had an All-Pro punter?
Posted by: Pulp | April 26, 2007 8:50 AM
The name Turk will bring back bad memories of the Tampa Bay game.....
Posted by: Nightmares | April 26, 2007 8:50 AM
They should bring in the DC United and see who can kick a football. Yeah, a solid kicker could add 2-3 wins per year easy.. especially for the Skins. Wouldn't be a waste to use a late round pick on a K.
Posted by: cwprice | April 26, 2007 8:51 AM
Reggie Robey? Jeff Hayes? Curt Knight? Sammy Baugh?
Posted by: Pulp | April 26, 2007 8:52 AM
To steal one from the great Frank Costanza, "serenity now... serenity now"
I agree completely on our kicking game. There is nothing worse than seeing an opposing team take the kickoff at the 15 or see the Space Cowboy send in the punt team (e.g. touchback team, do we know how to down a punt inside the 20?) on the 29 because 46 yards is "out of our range" and/or a punt was the best "way to go about things UP HERE at that point in time".
In all seriousness though, I was wrong about Frost. I thought he punted A LOT better than '05, minus the Indy meltdown. I also think Suisham was a solid addition last year. He could kick some 48-49 yarders and seemed to get kickoffs inside the 5. I hope that continues, b/c nothing irks me more than losing the field position game. Okay, fine, maybe a Space Cowboy presser, but that's it.

Didn't we have an Aussie punter 2 years ago? Laurie or something like that? But the Space Cowboy didn't like it that he didn't have 100 years experience and cut him loose.

we are stuck with snyder its the bug eyed racquetball player i hate. Danny liked and wanted santana and we picked 50 50. so maybe he has an eye for top talent. I doubt he gets involved in latter rounds (No splash) so thats where vinny and the scouts and gibbs must do a much better job.

Another day closer to the draft, another post closer to 50K.
Played poker with some NE Pats fans last night. They really believe the Pats are willing to package their 1st round picks to move up. Don't know if I see that happening. ATL also has plenty of ammunition to move up. I really think ATL is going to make a strong move to trade with either OAK or DET to take Johnson.
I truly believe the Skins are in a great position to trade down & still pick up either Okoye or Landry.
Can't wait until Saturday!
Posted by: JonTPK126 | April 26, 2007 9:39 AM
we also need to keep more picks so we have more turns at bat. the whole draft top to bottom is crapshoot.
maybe if i repeat myself 50,000 times we just get 100,000.
we been shooting our guns from a moving platform instead of a foundation. the stability comes from QB/coach.you have that then you got something.
Posted by: Old School | April 26, 2007 9:45 AM
Rumour from GBN:
Chicago and Miami may work something out over franchised Bears' LB Lance Briggs involving a swap of the 9th and 31st picks. And like the Broncos, the Bears may make this move a stepping stone to go even higher as Chicago is rumored to be interested in moving up to get Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn...
This rumour makes no sense just as it is, since the Redskins were willing to offer the #6 for Briggs and #31. But the bottom line, if the Bears want The Mighty Quinn, there could be a deal. But then, Quinn probably goes to Cleveland.
But maybe the Bears really have in mind to take Willis at #9. And they might figure they'll have to pay Willis less if they take him at 9 rather than 6.
Posted by: skinfanman | April 26, 2007 9:45 AM
"Kid" Okoye has a great story, but if we pick him he's going to get manhandled his first year. He still is a kid, and will have to grow up to be able to handle the NFL caliber O-Lineman that will be swallowing him up. That being said, maybe he grows into it and becomes a straight up beast for 5-10 years? Then we'd be in the proverbial catbird's seat....
Posted by: Pulldownclaw | April 26, 2007 9:48 AM
Whatchoo talkin' bout Willis?
Posted by: Pulldownclaw | April 26, 2007 9:50 AM
Jon, the idea of the Pats trading up for the best player available that two first rounders can buy ... makes complete sense to me. The don't seem like a 'need' team right now (except to replace Dillon ... and Peterson and Lynch both have some risk factors at play). They have played the offseason like they are the Skins; win now and win big.
In the kicking game, I agree that Frost got himself together before the season ended, but I still think the guy is not mentally stable (or only stable when heavily medicated). Kicker is a stress job -- punting should be less so, but quotes from him sound like he is one whiff away from a complete meltdown. The only thing that maintains his sanity is not whiffing. Skins cannot afford having a punter going into a psych out slump.
Last season, I was pro-Lonie, but my vote didn't count. I still like the idea of Travis Dorsch, but think I have to wait till training camp. Kickers and punters REQUIRE a controversy to be at the top of their game, esp. youngish guys. That said, I'm good as long as Frost stays on his meds.

repeat theme toward 50k
Jeff george is the single worst move the team has made since snyder has been in control.
It undermined a good solid QB (Johnson) and the head coach (Norv). Norv would've been gone likey anyway, but we would have done it like everyone else... After the fking season.

Hey, what do people in Providence know about the Pats and the draft?
If you read it on Redskin Insider, you can bet it in Vegas.
Posted by: KK | April 26, 2007 9:56 AM
Old School, I don't recall the Pats ever playing the disinformation game -- they seem like they work on their silence is golden game.
The interesting bit about the Bears-Fins-Briggs-Quinn discussion is that it might be that the Bears may well take the original Skins offer after all (i.e., not require another player), esp. if Quinn is there at #6, which could well happen assuming Russell goes first.
Posted by: dcsween | April 26, 2007 9:56 AM
Guys - What is intergoogle???
Posted by: ES | April 26, 2007 9:57 AM
I'm all for medicated kickers!
NE Pats 2 1st round picks (24 & 28) equate to 1400 points or the # 8 pick on the draft value chart. Texans are currently at # 8 and with all the holes in their roster I could definitely see them trading down.
The question is would the Skins be interested in such a trade & what else would be included in such a swap given the 200 point difference between picks # 8 & # 6.
Posted by: JonTPK126 | April 26, 2007 9:58 AM
Sween, If Russell goes first, then I think it is less likely that Quinn will be there. Cleveland is the most likely top 5 team to take QB (dont count out Detriot yet). So is Russell is gone at , cleveland would take Quinn.
Of course maybe the lions want only Russell, so if he is there then they jump in and take him. But it seems Marinelli wants Defense.

If the Browns take Quinn, then Peterson falls to #6. If the Browns take Peterson, then Quinn falls to #6. If the Raiders take Russell, then all he\_\_ breaks lose b/c the bidding war to trade up for CJ starts and Peterson and Quinn are casualty picks b/c everyone freaks out to get them sooner than they hoped based on the uncertainty. If the Raiders take Russell, then everyone's plans unfold according to pre-draft prep. Its like the stock market, as uncertainty increases, so does panic, which skews rationality.
The Cards don't want Quinn/Peterson b/c they have Leinart/Edge. Who they PLAN to pick might not be available if panic breaks loose, so they could freak out and trade UP to make sure they get they want, opening up their pick for someone who otherwise would be the Skins trade partner for the #6 availability of Quinn/Peterson (whoever the Browns don't take).

exactly. snyder brought back the face of the franchise . Gibbs goal was to resore the franchise, restablish the idenity and win.
Posted by: Old School | April 26, 2007 10:16 AM
JoeyV- Yeah, Gibbs was brought in not only in an effort to win, but also to bring stability to the organization. Put the right people in the right place. Bring in "Redskin" type players. Players that play hard and are humble to wear the uniform. You're right, it was a good move by Snyder. Now, we just need to Win!
Posted by: CC | April 26, 2007 10:16 AM
we expected a fast start but its taken joe longer to adjust.
I posted yesterday , That Joe only now feels comfortable with where we are and where we are going. so even though he brough stability we (in his mind) weren't until now.

Last night, Lisa and sfskin remarked about how, in the face of actual Skins' news, the blog traffic increases, including the possible onset of trolls.
Given the 50k goal, this might be a good time to remind people about ITA (Ignore The @ssclowns), esp. new posters or lurkers thinking about posting. As traffic increases, trolls appear and post to disparage the RI blog and/or specific posters. Its gets real negative.
The appropriate response is to ITA. If you respond, they don't go away.
In order to get to 50k, peeps need to be mindful of remaining positive, relevant and/or hilarious. Thread killers, like troll posts and responses to them, should be avoided.
Positive mojo is important, not only for getting to 50k, but also to maintain positive off-season karma so that Skins' FO maintains its composure and doesn't F*$K UP this draft. SHOMER SHABBOS. SHOMER HAIKU. SHOMER ITA.
We now return to your regularly scheduled blogging.

Yep! We need to win! I think we will, but if we don't I am going to try and enjoy the last couple of years that Gibbs will be the Head Coach.
How much longer do you think he has? This year and next, max? If Joe sticks to his commitment that's about it. Of course after that I am hoping he will be part of the organization but you never know with Gibbs, he retired completely from football once before - and the stress of the job definitely weighs on folks, especially when you are over 60!
Posted by: JoeyV | April 26, 2007 10:23 AM
big part of that was brunell. Joe knew he was only a transition QB, a bridge to get to campbell. Joe just picked the wrong bridge.

There should be constant updates here on our progress towards 50k, makes for a some easy posts

DC-
I think all hell will break loose personally. Good amount of talent on defense, 2 decent QB's, and a potential gamebreaker in CJ. I hope everyone has a 40oz within arms reach on Sat at 12:11AM eastern time, cause it's gonna be a show.

I think with all the $nyder bashing, it is easy to forget that at heart Danny is a true Skins fan & with all his ca$h and youthful exuberance, some mistakes were bound to happen. At the end of the day, I'd rather have an owner who is aggressive about building a great team then one who is afraid to $pend.
Posted by: JonTPK126 | April 26, 2007 10:26 AM
I care about the record. I dont watch this team to try and remember when I was younger and we were winning. I want to win now. Call me selfish but I root to win, not to watch.
Posted by: #6DoubleEL | April 26, 2007 10:26 AM
And forgot who wrote it a bunch of posts ago, but I agree, Jeff George was the worst thing to happen to this franchise.......he killed that very good team by playing instead of Brad Johnson when Johnson was hurt and then still playing when BJ came back from injury.
The only comparable move was Archuleta, except we cut ties with that joke relatively easily this offseason.

Google has become a verb ... to use google.com to search the Web. A (very) senior senator from Alaska referred to the Internet as a series of "tubes". Browsers and search engines have increased in number and utility ... in some cases, faster than entire population of users can adapt. The Prehistoric Caveman Blogger gets frightened and confused by these new tools.
Intergoogling the webtubes is a short hand word (that can be used as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb ... depending on how these terms are transformed) to describe any of those terms. Just check the intergoogles for what you're looking for.
Posted by: dcsween | April 26, 2007 10:27 AM
here is a guess.
I think joe signs an extension and coaches longer than the original contract.
Again it depends on JC and how things look to joe this year and heading into next. if he thinks we really have something, i think odds better 50% he extends a couple years.
Posted by: Old School | April 26, 2007 10:28 AM
JonTPK126 - I agree. Snyder loves the Redskins and wants to win but some of his revenue tactics turn the average fan against him despite his spending ways. I wish he would just let other people spend his money. I know it's tough for him to do but it would save him a lot of flack from fans (as if he cares anyway) and in the end he would probably have more to show for it...ie rings.
Posted by: CC | April 26, 2007 10:32 AM
You could be on to something Old School. If Joe gets on a little run and it looks promising, who knows? Winning solves everything, and certainly makes it easier to watch.
Posted by: Pulldownclaw | April 26, 2007 10:32 AM
Old School,
No way. Shook Joes hand in Indy last year. He's exhausted, overwhelmed, and frankly outmatched by todays game (yes, I am a psychic and could tell all that from one hand squeeze). He'll fulfill his obligation and ride a stock car off into the sunset.
Posted by: Pub Golf | April 26, 2007 10:33 AM
Is it just me or do you sense that if we still had Norv around as head coach, he would find at way to screw up reaching 50K in the last two minutes before the draft (and then somehow spin it positively in the post-game?). Man, I miss him ... :-)
thanks sween for the great reminder on ITA.
Posted by: Paps in Manila | April 26, 2007 10:34 AM
Sween - You confused me even more. Is inter google a website? Or is it just a new word to google stuff. I don't google, but I yahoo. Does that mean i really inter-yahoo?
Man, the Inet is confusing.......
The thing a coup of years ago was the 'have you ever google yourself" thing? Now, are you supposed to 'Intergoogle' yourself????????????????
Posted by: ES | April 26, 2007 10:35 AM
At this point St. Joe is just looking to restore his HOF aura and ride off, leaving behind a restored team of "true" Redskins. I think if he makes the playoffs this year, he hangs it up. Unless he decides to hang around just to be the team spokesman and lets Saunders and Double G take over.
Posted by: Paps in Manila | April 26, 2007 10:37 AM
If you google yourself too much, you'll go blind

One more positive thing about Snyder, at least he doesn't come down and pace the sidelines for the last few minutes of the game with a dramatic look on his face!
#6DoubleEL : Don't know how old you are but having Gibbs on the team is comforting and believe me we all want to win. He will make it happen or at least right the ship which he has already started with quality players like: Moss, Portis, Cooley, Washington, Taylor, ARE, Smoooo0oot, Campbell.
Good ol' buges has got the line clicking too... just a matter of time!

maybe Cindy or some web geek can answer this - was Wash Post blogs set up to handle 50,000 posts in such a short time? I think we will all take great pride if the Wash Post had to buy another web server because of us.
I think Nate would be very very proud.

JoeyV, love the optimism!!! I too think Gibbs still has something in the tank.
Question is Gibbs' something better then most coaches everything? I think so... I'm also a blind homer in like with a 60 something year old man.

So, can anyone name an owner that actually has some degree of sanity that goes on scouting trips?
Guess not.
And isn't it Cindy that wants the 50K or was that Lisa? Nate's just a no limt souljah.
Posted by: Larry Bud | April 26, 2007 10:47 AM
"...Darrel Green used to do that. His speed can also make up for others "mistakes". Darrel Green pulling down Tony Dorsett from behind. So now the top RB will just go 10 yard instead of 50 for the TD, Okoye won't stop that."
Posted by: Periculum | April 25, 2007 06:29 PM
Holy s**t! If you are relying on your cornerbacks & safeties to stop the run, you are in big trouble. Run support yes, but not to compensate for the defensive line & linebackers. Darrel Green was a gifted athelete & one of a kind. But he was not superman and the defense did rely on him to stop the run.

JoeyV --
I think your sentiment was right the first couple of years of Gibbs 2.0 -- it was comforting to have him back on the sidelines. But at this point in the comeback, its time to have everything click. There are really no more excuses. I want to keep St Joe on the pedestal like everyone else, but I am first a fan of the team rather than any particular player or coach. I'm not throwing him under the bus, just a bit of perspective.
Posted by: Paps in Manila | April 26, 2007 10:50 AM
Also trying not to be an @ss clown today. But did anybody catch the Phil Spector Perp Walk Shot on the front web page of wapo.com?

Posted by: JoeyV | April 26, 2007 10:43 AM
That dramatic look coupled with a horrible face lift. Speaking of face lifts, has anyone seen Gary Shandling as of late? YIKES! Jerry, Gary & Burt Reynolds ought to start a club. I think Gene Simmons might want to join.
Posted by: JonTPK126 | April 26, 2007 10:52 AM
Larry Bud: I guess I don't pay attention to other owners too much so I wouldn't know. I don't care if Snyder goes on trips or not, he isn't making the decisions on the talent to pick - it is clearly Gibbs. If it wasn't Gibbs would be out of here.
I view Snyder as Gibb's apprentice.
Again, I rather have an owner that scouts than one that scouts, paces the sidelines and deems his team America's team.
Consistency in the NFL is gone, you can only hope for staff consistency now, such as the Steelers (they just changed) and Patriots

I don't think that worked...
It was sposed to say "just doing my part to reach 50k."
I like how Barry Svrluga of the Nationals Journal gets pumped about 50 comments on a thread... and you guys are pushing for 1000 a day.
You'd be proud though, the 8th grade social studies classes all know when the homework board says "SYGO" you're supposed to study your guts out.
I can't believe the draft is finally here... remember back in January when we were all wondering what would become of the RI?
Posted by: Dorf | April 26, 2007 10:59 AM
what's Danny pay out to double g if he doesnt get the head job? $1 million? Guess it depends on if double g turns around the D this year.
But could be a very small price to pay if Russ Grimm or Cowher is available.

I know its not redskins related but did you hear about the famous bloody sock of Curt Schilling from the 2004 world series.
Supposedly Doug Maribelli (sp) told Gary Thorne that it was a publicity stunt and that the red was actually painted on the sock. Thorne brought it up l;ast night during the O's game

like snyder's aggresive nature he was (is) misguided I agree i think Gibbs is showing him team building.we have been an aggressive franchise since the early 70's a veteran win now team, thats not gonna change.QB/coach, then be balls out aggressive. thats the model. thats what all other owners fear.
Best combo is to win and be overpaid.

J-La has already posted that he thinks the online chat counts towards the 50K. I think we should refer this ruling to the ref in the booth. I'm throwing the red flag on that one - it ain't RI.

IT seems as if JLaC has everyone over there in another place on this website I shall not mention. JLaC dosen't know what we will do in the draft, so what good can come out, other than bashing how we add players to our team.......

Paps in Manilla - Yes, Man Boobs gets $1M if he's not the head coach when Gibbs retires. But, who would run the defense if Man Boobs is head coach? Jerry Gray? I almost would rather have Al Saunders as head coach and in control of play calling duty and have Man Boobs keep the defensive coordinator job with an extra $1M in his back pocket.
Posted by: CC | April 26, 2007 11:20 AM
oops, he answered it:
Saint Louis: JLC,
Do you get the feeling that Gibbs is tired? Or do you think he still has something left in the tank?
Jason La Canfora: I think Joe is plenty driven. he works very, very hard. No doubt about it. Some would say with the current front office structure that hard work won't be enough to get it turned around, but we'll see

JLC is talking about the possible and illusive long term contract for COOOLEY. Is there anyone else here who loves Cooley as much as I do? That man is a football player and probably my favorite since D. Green wore the B&G.
Posted by: Inigo Montoya | April 26, 2007 11:37 AM
I may or not have a crossword puzzle competition with the social studies teacher every day. I may or may not have played softball yesterday with the PE class and went 2 for 2 with a HR, a RBI and 2 runs scored.
My middle school may or may not be accredited.
NCLB may or may not be the most awesome thing to ever happen to the education system.
JLC is working it on the chat. We need to throw in a few fake questions to keep it lively.

I like Cooley because he plays the game the right way. Doesn't complain to the media about teammates, coaches, etc. He doesn't over-do-it with touchdown celebrations. He's also hilarious and keeps the team loose. Hopefully, he is a Redskin for a long time.

If we end up w/ Landry or Briggs, the FatHead comes down from my basement wall. You've been warned, Danny Boy.
Bears linebacker Lance Briggs wants a trade out of Chicago. If a trade is struck with Washington, at least the Redskins reportedly have agreed to terms with Briggs on a new contract.
Posted by: FatHead | April 26, 2007 11:54 AM
A little local flavor in the mix...
Mel Kiper: You want a sleeper? Towson's Jermon Bushrod. He's an offensive tackle who has great athletic and physical ability. He's also a left tackle, and there are very few quality left tackles after the top four in this draft. There are three first-round left tackles, and another one that is a borderline. You could have four left tackles go by pick No. 36. After that there is a big dropoff. That really helps a guy like Bushrod.
I wonder if he can play guard? If not, a little more depth on the OL wouldn't hurt.

ES, would love to visit FedEx for the draft, unfortunately the metro doesnt run to St Louis :(
And the last time I was at FedEX, the Skins lost to the Vikings and embarassed themselves on MNF.
Posted by: Inigo Montoya | April 26, 2007 12:17 PM
I would like the Skins to get a taller receiver too, but we DON'T need to f up the draft by picking CJ. As of now take Okoye.
Posted by: RockyTopSkin | April 26, 2007 12:19 PM
Let's say the Skins take C.Johnson - what number does he wear. #21 in college, but Taylor owns it and NFL receivers can't wear # in the 20's. He can't wear #81.
11 - Espy
80 - open
81 - Monk
82 - ARE
83 - Thrash
84 - open
85 - Lloyd
86 - open
87 - Yoder
88 - open
89 - Moss
My guess is 11.
Okoye - #90
Landry - #30 (sorry Nemo)

HUGE Cooley fan- loved the nickname Captain Chaos, but I guess it didn't really stick. You gotta appreciate his tough YAC. I met him at a charity event last year when he had the afro going (which, by the way, is hands down the best look in my personal opinion); he's a real laid-back cat. I also briefly "met" GGrilliams. Having recently signed the 2-yr extension, he made some kind of off-handed comment about how he was previously thinking of rounding up Saunders and heading for a head coaching gig. Nice. At least lie to me and tell me how Jonesd you were about staying w/ my team.

Sween, regarding the resumption of the Briggs trade, if the Bears call the Skins asking to go back to the Skin's original offer that the Bears previously rejected, the Skins' front office should tell the Bears that the offer went down and that the Bears should add an extra pick to make the deal work. The Skins are holding the cards now and their LB position is not the most glaring need. In contrast, the Bears have a disgruntled player who is ready to sit out 10 out of 16 games this upcoming the season, while they are paying him a hefty "franchise tag" salary. But I am afraid the Skin's front office is too inconmpetent when it comes to negotiating.

I'd be for a briggs deal if we got a heckuva lot more from the Bears than the last 'deal.' He's clearly got a huge super-potential upside. The chance to show his old team what they lost alone should be worth it.

I do not think that we need another LB the only way that we trade is for more picks or if a trade is involved then we must get a Dlineman in the trade

All has been pretty quiet on the Briggs front, although someone a few posts backs mentioned we agreed to terms with him should the trade be completed..........source?
I also assume everyone's heard about Adrian Peterson hurting his collarbone, which could make him a slide a little more and hurt our chances of trading down, yikes

I phrased that incorrectly...anyone else besides me want to know what he said? only J-La-Soul can spill the beans. Sorry.

Also heard that Mike and Mike this morning were discussing how Raiders taking Calvin Johnson is gaining steam, and where that leaves Russell, as Lions would probably take Thomas #2, then Quinn still might go #3
Posted by: Jon | April 26, 2007 1:16 PM
How did the Peterson's collarbone story not leak before yesterday? He told teams about it at the combine? I am shocked by this.
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 1:16 PM
You know Al Davis wants CJ.
Posted by: raider fan | April 26, 2007 1:18 PM
Although I haven't experience it...I feel like a collarbone injury is minor. Just a small, fluke injury if you will. I don't think it'll affect his draft status. Of course, I could be totally wrong.
Posted by: CC | April 26, 2007 1:20 PM
Mugamuck - All of the team knew this at the combine. It's just getting to us regular folks now. An attempt by another's player's agent to be picked in front of him, perhaps???

I broke my collar bone playing football in high school. I didn't let it heal and rushed back to finish the season. It broke again. However it only needed 3 months to heal the second time and I never had any other problems with it. (granted I didn't play in the Pro's, but I also didn't have all the tools to make it heal faster.) I thin the story was leaked just to create some info to make him slide to certain teams. For all we know the leak could have come from the Bills who despartely need a RB.
Posted by: hail to 'em | April 26, 2007 1:26 PM
ES-
Just impressed with the ability of 32 teams to keep knowledge of a top-5 prospect's major injury from going public for 2 months.
If that's what happened.
I'd love to know the evolution of this, from the intital injury, to the decision to hide it until the combine, how each team was told, what each team did with the information. Even after the draft, would make for an interesting story.
Bad news for the Redskins though - hurts the chances of trading down. With Peterson possibly out of the top 5 it makes trading with Arizona more appealing to teams in the 7-12 range.
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 1:28 PM
I also always thought it was a relatively minor injury, but consider Charles Rogers, who had it recurr and missed the last 12 games of his first season, and all of his 2nd season.
Posted by: Jon | April 26, 2007 1:30 PM
hail to 'em, thanks for the perspective. The fact that the story stayed under wraps for so long makes me think the re-injury isn't that big of a concern for most teams.
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 1:30 PM
Makes me almost glad to hear that something didn't leak out of a major sport for once........but how did this not leak while the pot smoking info did?? I would think this Peterson info is a much bigger deal
Posted by: Jon | April 26, 2007 1:31 PM
Raiders - Russell
Lions - Thomas
Browns - Peterson
Bucs - Johnson
Redskins - Okoye
I have a feeling thats how it it will shake out.
Posted by: hail to 'em | April 26, 2007 1:32 PM
A poll for anyone who is reading this:
Say Gaines Adams falls to 6, the Redskins don't get a decent offer to trade down, and the choice is between Okoye, Adams and Landry.
Who do you take?
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 1:33 PM
It seems to me that CJ is a luxury Oakland can't afford... they have so many problems on offense, and a WR can only have so much impact... even a RB can't touch the ball enough to change the entire complexion of a team. QB or o-line have to be where you start, at least then you play every down.

With Oakland having so many leads and CJ clearly the top prospect they should trade back and get as much as they can for it to stockpile the picks for all of the holes that they have.
Posted by: SSWest | April 26, 2007 1:41 PM
F the Cardinals! - ha - just kidding I sure did. Sorry. ( I could have said, I meant to so I would have to re-post it to get to 50k)
Raiders - Russell
Lions - Thomas
Browns - Peterson
Bucs - Johnson
Cards - Adams
Redskins - Okoye
Posted by: hail to 'em | April 26, 2007 1:41 PM
Sounds like Skins would take Okoye over Landry or Adams. If all 3 are there, also wouldn't be surprised if we could trade back, as Atlanta loves Okoye and Landry, and Adams is the top Defensive player in the draft for a lot of teams. So i'll go off the board and say try to slide back and still get one of those guys.
Personally, I love Adams, but he doesnt fit. I'd still take him over Okoye though, with Landry being my 3rd choice based on his position and the presence of the Reaper
Posted by: Jon | April 26, 2007 1:41 PM
cload and daggar, I think most folks agree the Raiders only take CJ if they pick up a big name at QB, probably Culpepper. I think it's killing Al Davis right now because he KNOWS CJ will be great, but he NEEDS a QB prospect, and Jamarcus Russell has had excellent offensive line protection at LSU, so no one knows how he'll handle the lack of decent protection at Oakland.
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 1:41 PM
Anyone else wish the problems on our D would just go away so that we could mortgage our future and draft CJ???
If I had to choose between Okoye/Landry/Adams,
Adams- not even a consideration
AO & L2, I would take either of them and probably lean towards L2.
Posted by: Inigo Montoya | April 26, 2007 1:42 PM
muga;
Dont need another Carter type, so Adams is out.
I say we will take Okoye, which I will not like. We spent two good late 2nd day draft picks on DT... we dont need another.
If we cant trade out of our 6, I say, ad naseum, L2

I dont think AL Davis is even considering CJ... he is absolutely loving the big, strong-armed QB. Russell is going to be fun to watch.

Jon, I agree with you on each and every point - I'm really hoping Quinn falls to 6 and the Redskins can pull off a trade with Miami and also get pick 60.
What do you think the Redskins would get from Atlanta if they agreed to drop to #8? And who do they pick at 8?
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 1:45 PM
again repeat theme in the quest for 50k.
i like all the possibilities the skins have at the top of the draft and don't think we will mess that up. but of equal or greater importance is to find some players in the 5th ,6th ,7th . that has been our problem for a long long time.

When is Wilbon's NFL Draft chat?
Posted by: SMACK | April 26, 2007 1:46 PM
"Redskins -- Amobi Okoye. Team loves him but doesn't love him enough to warrant them taking him over a safety like LaRon Landry or even Jamaal Anderson. The team will still try, try, try to get out of this slot. I still believe they could get a deal done for Lance Briggs before Roger Goodell takes the podium. "

I'm still hoping the Redskins can drop to 9 and get Anderson. If that happens, I suggest they take this guy with one of their late picks:
Kyle Young
OC | (6'5", 350, 5.52) | FRESNO STATE
Possesses excellent size. Is tall with good overall bulk and adequate strength. A technically sound player with great awareness. Makes all the line calls and shows a terrific understanding of his offensive scheme and opposing defensive alignments. He has the size to engulf smaller defenders at the point of attack. More of a mauler than anything. Takes good angles, knows his physical limitations and stays within his boundaries. He does a good job of knowing where the blitz is coming from in pass pro. He shows the size and base to anchor versus the bull rush. A bit of a mauler in the running game. Maximizes his physical tools. Is a durable and experienced prospect that has not missed a single offensive play over the past three seasons (2003-'05). Shows outstanding leadership skills, instincts and football intelligence. A hard worker on and off the field.

Oak - Jmarc
Lions - Adams
Clev - Peterson
TB - Johnson
Ari - Thomas
Atl - Okoye
Vikes - Quinn
Wash - Landry

"Miami -- Trade down with Chicago, who moves up to six with a Lance Briggs deal, and take Brady Quinn. This is a very hot rumor running around the league and, in fact, league sources even say the two teams have had some minor exploratory talks about such a move. I think even if they trade for Trent Green, it's a solid move for the new Cam Cameron Era. Side note: the Chiefs equipment guy has already sent Green's shoulder pads and other equipment he uses down to Miami thinking that deal will get done. Do I think that Chicago moves up and then trades with Miami? Not really. Not sure they think they'll have to move for him if Quinn gets out of the top four. Miami is also shopping Marty Booker to pick up additional picks in this draft. "

Smack;
Read wilbons chat form monday. He despises the draft and will never cover it.
PG - Cooley is divorced from his wife and is with the Cheerleader that caused all the drama.
During the season he calls in every monday to Elliot in the Morning(or tuesday for the mon night games) and discusses the game. At the end of the season, he and (whats her name) went to the Bahamas. They are prolly close to marrying.

Would obviously love this scenario!!! How many trades actually happen on draft day though? There are a million "rumors" right now and I bet 10% of them dont happen. We should all get used to the idea of either Okoye or L2.

"Defensive end Jamaal Anderson is falling. It had been true a week ago but is no longer true today. Seriously, one week ago nearly every team who chimed in had something negative to say about this young man. Today he's linked to at least one team in the top six and a couple others inside the top 15. "
What team could he be talking about in the top 6. (For the answer read my original posting from Glazer)

I bet not even 10% of them happen. Sorry been BMGO

Yeah ES, I know Wilbon is an NFL Draft Dodger. I was just pointing it out in my usual comedic non-genius kind of way. I'd rather watch the Cardinals draft 3 times in the 7th round than watch another Wiz/Cavs game.
Posted by: SMACK | April 26, 2007 1:56 PM
Atlanta would take Okoye or Landry at #6, so assuming Adams is gone, we take whoever Atlanta doesn't...
Now if we drop to #9, it gets interesting. If Quinn is there, Miami has to make a move to jump Minnesota, so my guess is:
6-Quinn (Miami)
7?Landry??trade? (minnesota)
8-Landry/Okoye (Atlanta)
9-Landry/Okoye/Anderson (whoever is left)
Now, for who we take with #60 (or any 2nd round pick for that matter). I say not an OG unless Grubbs is somehow still on the board. A WR who falls wouldn't surprise given the scouting attention to Bowe. Maybe Weddle? If we draft Okoye, a DE (say Charles Johnson) wouldn't surprise me either.

NBA fan here, and although I am a die hard Bulletes fan, the Wiz will be swept and are not even worth watching.....Fortunately, these playoffs could be even better than last year, with 4 great series in the west, and 2 good ones in the east......next round will also have 2 good matchups out west, and 1 good one in the east...can't wait!
Posted by: Jon | April 26, 2007 2:06 PM
I watch the NBA playoffs. I've become convinced the refs in the NBA conspire to keep the highly touted teams in series. I know it's paranoid, but the NBA seems like the most corrupt of the big leagues - 85 draft, Orlando getting a second 1st rounder after MJ retired so Shaq could move into the spotlight, the crooked refs... but I still watch...
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 2:08 PM
Given the choice between trading up to 4 and gettng Calvin Johnson, but losing next year's 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks, or staying at #6, what would you do?

Mugamack- nice blip on Kyle Young- I'd heard someone mention he'd be a great later round steal. Anyone know of any other O-lineman we're looking at? Definitely on the top of my list in the next year or 2.

If the Redskins drop to #8 in a trade with Atlanta and pick up a 3rd rounder, here's who I'd pick in the 3rd:
Paul Soliai
DT | (6'4", 344, 5.1) | UTAH
Strengths: Is massive, plays with adequate leverage and can occupy multiple blockers at the line of scrimmage. Has adequate upper body strength and flashes ability to shed blocks. Shows good body control for size, wraps up upon contact and is an adequate open field tackler. Has adequate lower body strength, drives legs and flashes the ability to collapse the pocket. Shows good awareness and generally gets hands up when isn't going to get to the quarterback. Flashes the ability to change directions quickly and is capable of developing a wide array of pass rush moves. Times jumps well and blocked a kick during senior season.
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 2:14 PM
Count me among NBA Fans. The Wiz are my team as well, but they are toast. They just don't have the Juice to beat the Cavs without their top 2. But hey, as skins fans we are pro's at saying 'Wait till next season'
This time we mean it.

KK - none of us KNOW anything! This is all just about killing time until Chicago accepts the Briggs trade.
Posted by: mugamack | April 26, 2007 2:17 PM
I'm betting on the Briggs trade to still happen, so we'll be picking at 31 boys and girls. No need to discuss Okoye, Landry or anyone else
Posted by: bornskinsfan | April 26, 2007 2:17 PM
Who would the T-wolves take off our roster (That we'd be willing to give up) for KG?
If you say Antawn, I'm going to need to borrow jm220's hammer.
Posted by: etrod | April 26, 2007 2:18 PM
The Briggs trade will NOT happen. I keep having to tell myself that. Maybe I'll believe soon.
Posted by: etrod | April 26, 2007 2:20 PM
Now I'm confused. Are we trading with Chicago for KG? I suppose it's a better deal than that trade for Duckett but somehow Briggs would make more sense than KG.
Posted by: KK | April 26, 2007 2:21 PM
Haywood, Hayes & Blatche for KG
