Who's Your Sixth Round Daddy?

So they stuck with LBs and took Blades, like I thought. He comes from a bigtime family - his dad Bennie, was a stud back in the day and his uncle Brian, was a quality player too. He was very productive at Pitt, but is not very big.

Like Sartz, he could come in and be a teams guy right away and gives them another athletic depth guy on defense. Right now they only havce Lemar Marshall and Khary Campbell as reserves, and they want to develop young backups there with the potential to play more regularly if need.

And again, I can't say this enough. Even if the Skins still get Briggs, keep your eye on Marcus Washington's hip and Rocky McIntosh's knee. Both conditions could get tricky.

I'm wondering if it would be wise to go after the kicker from Colorado here? What about the Dline. I know there is a ton of confidence with our guys but youth is an area we need to work on. We could also use a few Olineman. HMMMMMM where do we go?

Posted by: Frank (Los Angeles) | April 29, 2007 2:59 PM

TE, K, OL, DL
all of the above

Posted by: RBD202 | April 29, 2007 3:02 PM

Frank from LA, I'm with you on the D-line situation. Either the Redskins FO have convinced themselves that you can make your vet defensive tackles and ends last longer if you spray them down with Rhinoliner, or they're going to try to pull a trade off to put a slab of beef on the line. It's befuddling.

Posted by: FlimFlam | April 29, 2007 3:04 PM

If the Briggs trade could still be on, whom might we be giving up?

Posted by: Joe The Fan | April 29, 2007 3:04 PM

Still might get Briggs???

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:08 PM

So what you're saying about Briggs is that he will be this year's TJ Duckett -- he panic move we make when Marcus Washington's hip swells during mini camp. I see next year's first, third, Lemar Marshall and Chris Cooley for Briggs.

Posted by: TB | April 29, 2007 3:08 PM

TB,

I was going to say the same thing...

I can't wait for our inept FO to ship off next year's 1st and 2nd for Briggs if Marcus and/or Rocky aren't ready by the pre-season.

You just can't do that UP HERE, Gibby the Clown!

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 29, 2007 3:12 PM

tb and ricky bobby,

i'm curious to hear which players you think the skins should have taken. all i hear is bitc*ing...it's getting old.

Posted by: cosmofla | April 29, 2007 3:20 PM

G is great place to go late in the 6th. Bugel can coach 'em up and the skins lack depth there. Tim Duckworth is available, like Campbell he is from Auburn.

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 3:22 PM

This is the best statment made so far. i'm curious to hear which players you think the skins should have taken. all i hear is bitc*ing...it's getting old.

Everyone thinks they are an all American hero and can pick a team so much better than people that do this professionally. Gibby the clown??? how many super bowls have you led a team to?? I would follow Joe Gibbs into the ocean if that's where he wanted to take this team. Joe Gibbs is the only reason we aren't the Detroit Lions with a pathetic team and no history. Get a clue.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:24 PM

If the FO didn't learn about panic moves after last year, they will never learn anything. If they didn't give up picks next year to move up for CJ I would suspect they wouldn't be giving up picks for Briggs either. Relax.

OL or DL please. I'm down with a G. The Wade/Pucillo combo worry me.

Posted by: cdubb | April 29, 2007 3:27 PM

Really, disparaging Gibbs is moronic. The man deserves respect. He did take the team back to the playoffs - something it took Norv Turner about 10 years to do. Last year was a step back, but let's keep it in perspective.

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 3:28 PM

They will not trade for Briggs period. Hold up let me take that back I forget this Team is capable of making the most bone head plays since D Snyder took over. I think we will ask Bruce Smith to come back to stablize the DL. Deion Sanders will come back to teach C Rogers how to catch. M Carrier will come back to teach L2 and S Taylor how to not get beat deep. Then we'll make the worst trade in history by giving our 2008 draft to get Briggs for one year, because we'll cut him like Arch Deluxe since we won't fit our system.

Posted by: Redskin Born | April 29, 2007 3:29 PM

They need to get line help, o line or d line. Draft or Free agent or trade, they need to find somebody or we will have another high draft choice again. We need to protect our franchise quarterback, and get pressure on oppessing quarterbacks. Line Line Line grrrrrrrrrrr.

Posted by: Ed Wagner | April 29, 2007 3:32 PM

Cowboys just took someone names Deon - that's funny.

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 3:32 PM

cosmofla, we're just delirious cuz the skins still have their first 2 of their 3 picks in '08.

Posted by: dealer | April 29, 2007 3:32 PM

What are the coaches saying about McIntosh and Washington's injuries? Are they on track for training camp or could they linger into the season???

Posted by: Rich in Tampa | April 29, 2007 3:33 PM

Does anyone that posts to this site actually like the Redskins? If so the constant crying and trashing of the team could have easily fooled me? If this is what you say about the Skins I would be scared to hear eveyones views on teams they don't like.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:33 PM

We traded Arch, why does every say we cut him? We are about to pick in the late stage of round 6 in Chicago's spot.

And who cares if we paid Arch a bunch of money. The 'Skins are the world's richest franchise......money is not an object.....

Posted by: Big Murf | April 29, 2007 3:35 PM

I said absolutely nothing about their draft picks, you turd burglars. In fact, I love the Blades pick.

All I said is that I can still see our inept FO making a panic trade like we did last year with Duckett.

As far as Gibbs goes, the only place I'd follow that man is off to see the Wizard so we can get him his brain back. I'm sorry, but the man has lost his touch. I probably shouldn't call him a clown, but right now that's exactly what he is. Sorry.

P.S. Have fun drowning in that ocean.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 29, 2007 3:37 PM

Mark May is an A-hole.

Posted by: cdubb | April 29, 2007 3:38 PM

May is trashing the Skins - AGAIN!

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 3:38 PM

i hear you, dealer. i would love to have picks in every round. but what would really shock me is if we don't address d-line before/during camp. the draft gurus are suggesting there are a lot of quality players who will go undrafted. we'll see.

Posted by: cosmofla | April 29, 2007 3:38 PM

Anonymous one, if you think trashing is bad now, wait until the season when they lose (hopefully that will not happen often). Last season it was like a war zone.

Sad.

Posted by: Lisa | April 29, 2007 3:38 PM

They are just hardened and miserable after years of bingus, that brought them to a draft without 2nd, 3rd, 4th round pick. Don't mind me, I'm just 'the other Eagles Fan' lurking quietly here.

Posted by: Gonzo, MD | April 29, 2007 3:38 PM

Why's May so awful? Because he doesn't agree with what the Skins did? I know Washington and McIntosh may be hurt, and those injuries may carry over into the season, but this biggest need is still the defensive line, and drafting two LBs in two rounds doesn't really address that need. Now, they have another pick in the sixth, so they'll probably take a DL there, but May is right. They have yet to tackle their largest problem as of now through the draft.

Posted by: Colin | April 29, 2007 3:41 PM

Lisa seems to be the only one that enjoys the team. What is Mays problem? Seriously he needs to chill out.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:42 PM

Wow, is the draft still going on???

Why even bother with the second day? Just do two rounds and be done with it.

What would happen if they did away with the draft altogether? I know, I know...it's become a television event that the NFL would never give up. But what would happen if college players were free agents from the onset? I think the first two years would be land grabs by the big money teams, but at some point it would even out as front offices (not the 'Skins, though) realize that it's better to build a team for the long haul than to constantly redo the roster every year...

Posted by: P Diddy | April 29, 2007 3:42 PM

If you are an Eagles fan why would you be chatting in here?

Did you want to stop by and see what a Super Bowl Trophy looked like?

Posted by: Big Murf | April 29, 2007 3:42 PM

ricky bobby, i guess we disagree. but c'mon man...turdburglars?? wtf...

i don't see gibbs as over the hill from a coaching standpoint. clearly, he is not able to manage free agency and drafting to provide us with a good future. he needs to get help...a gm of course.

that said, quit all the crying , give up your tickets and go root for the friggin ravens!

Posted by: cosmofla | April 29, 2007 3:43 PM

Diddy, The whole point of the draft is to give the weaker teams a fighting chance ... that applies to the second day too. Plenty of good players picked today.

Posted by: Gonzo, MD | April 29, 2007 3:43 PM

Hey I think all Redskins fans are bitter. But to continue to be pessimistic and act like every move is the end of the world is a poor way to look at things. If the Redskins continue to suck, life will go on. It will just be annoying to watch every September-December.

Posted by: cdubb | April 29, 2007 3:44 PM

A crap 6th round defensive lineman with no ability or exp is not going to help them. Picking the best available athelets that can back up players and play special teams will.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:45 PM

One game away from the NFC championship a year ago. Gibbs has lost it. Last year the defense fell apart, Williams pushed for AA and pushed out LaVar. Sean Springs was hurt all year and we had a lousy secondary in general. Let's blame the right person

Posted by: skinsrule | April 29, 2007 3:46 PM

The reason May is an idiot is that he want the Redskins to fill their needs with 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks. That doesn't work, in the late rounds you draft development and depth players. Rarely do you find a first year starter that late. The Redskins were not going to be able to fill their holes with this draft. Not enough early picks.

The good news is they don't want development players because they think they can win now. They are not the Raiders, who are having a great draft, but it will not pay dividends until 2009.

Big Murf - I'm a Baltimore resident who prefers the Post to the Sun, so I read it online. That's how I first came - and I stayed because it's a good blog.

And, yeah, you have the trophies, earned before I came to this country. May they keep you warm as you sit out the postseason again.

anonymous poster:

There are two types of fans... realists and homers.

For the latter, I really wish you guys would pick up the record books and look at the last 17 years. WE ARE THE LIONS NOW!

In addition, some of us were too young to really appreciate the good days, so this is all we know. So that point is garbage. Look at now, Richard Head.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | April 29, 2007 3:48 PM

gonzo, look at the eagles history, dude...no trophies...at least when we get there, we can close it out.

Posted by: cosmofla | April 29, 2007 3:51 PM

Ricky Bobby if you really feel the the Redskins are the Lions you must feel very alone all the way out there on your own planet.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:51 PM

cosmofla - I hear you. I'd love to make that final step one day. Perhaps if we can keep our QB and tailbacks healthy for a whole season.

Posted by: Gonzo, MD | April 29, 2007 3:53 PM

perhaps if you could keep the healthy... or what may be even better would be if you could get real ones

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:54 PM

Here we go, who's it gonna be?

Posted by: ce1782 | April 29, 2007 3:56 PM

Believe me, they are real. I know you'd love to be in our QB shoes ... and your backs seem to get hurt up too. Gotta give respect to a healthy Portis, though.

Posted by: Gonzo, MD | April 29, 2007 3:57 PM

Duckworth is still there. He is an Offensive Guard and one of Kiper's best available.

Posted by: Skins fan stuck in Philly | April 29, 2007 3:58 PM

yeah i would love to have a qb that is horribly over paid and can be replaced and betterd by a man that is 40 years old and a woman

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 3:59 PM

Jordan Palmer, wtf?

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:00 PM

WTF?!?!

Posted by: ce1782 | April 29, 2007 4:00 PM

i also would have loved to use my first pick on a qb that was a 7th rounds pick on most peoples boards

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:00 PM

staying healthy?? how about all the other
teams who have injuries...this is the big boys league...it's rough up here

Posted by: cosmofla | April 29, 2007 4:00 PM

Why did we draft a QB?

Posted by: Redskin Born | April 29, 2007 4:01 PM

You're gonna tell me about overpaid players?

Posted by: Gonzo, MD | April 29, 2007 4:01 PM

Let's get Kris Jenkins from Carolina. For...Ladell? Give them Brunell back?!

Posted by: froggie | April 29, 2007 4:02 PM

i agree the redskins overpay for people however the eagles won't open the purse strings for anyone so his being overpaid is much more drastic

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:03 PM

True, I didn't expect that. But I trust our management when it comes to picking QBs. Ideally now we can cut or trade a QB before the season starts.

Posted by: Gonzo, MD | April 29, 2007 4:06 PM

They gave the same money to Kevin Curtis (who would be a starter on a pop warner team) that they would have had to give to stallworth to keep him.

Posted by: Anonymous | April 29, 2007 4:06 PM

I really don't think being frugal is a point of strength for you to argue from.

Posted by: Gonzo, MD | April 29, 2007 4:09 PM

A QB? Couldn't they have filled that need by signing an undrafted FA - doesn't make sense. On the positive side maybe he's a little like his brother Carson potential wise. Maybe Todd Collins is on his way out as well.

Posted by: skinswest | April 29, 2007 4:13 PM

I thought May's points were on the money.

I think Landry was a good #1 pick, but I don't see the Skins having done enough to strengthen the D-line. They have some good injury prone talent up front, but still we're talking about a team that had only 19 sacks and 6 INTs last year. Those numbers are worse than bad. Plus, on the other side of the line, they lost a pretty good OG in Derrick Dockery.

Realistically I think this team is probably at least another year or two away. The 2006 off-season gambles pretty much went bust--Antwan Randle El excepted--and we are paying the price in the 2007 off-season. It's hard to replace an early 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round pick. Although it's likely that we may have that opportunity again in 2008. I hope I'm proven wrong, but I doubt it.

And no, Lance Briggs is not the answer to anything (unless that answer is: "Would you trade a 3rd and 6th round pick and some cap space to us?" And then, of course, yes).

Posted by: JP | April 29, 2007 4:24 PM

Anybody think that maybe Arizona got the skins' guy just ahead of them so the skins panic and grab the TE from Michigan? Sounds like he can block and definitely played against tougher competition. Man, it was rehashed over and over how the dline was their biggest weakness and they didn't address it at all. Hope they can sign a couple UFA's as stopgap - Michael Myers anyone?
