Sean Taylor
Sean Taylor is indeed in the house for today's OTA, according to the team. We'll see what Redskins folks have to say about that and we'll try to get a comment from Taylor.
The Redskins also signed eight players: DB Byron (brother of Brian) Westbrook, DE Alex Buzbee, TE Brian Bell, LB Kevin Jones, FB Pete Schmitt, WR Carl Berman, DB Brandon Register, and G Cornelius Rogers.
In other matters, Jason is taking comp time, so he'll be here sporadically. Guest blog submissions are welcome. And we're currently at 54,603 posts.

Hilton's cap hit was twice as much as our 7th rounder Ecker, so he would've had to be "just a guy ++" to match Ecker's "just a guy" status.

The trollers will be subjected to eternal tackling by the Reaper and Double L
The 3rd, 4th, 14ths will have to listen to Gibbs say they played their guts out over and over again.

Oh my gosh! Sean Taylor arrived at the OTA's! That should mean now (based on Sally Jenkins' theory) that the Redskins now have everything together and that Gibbs is "in touch" with the young players therefore they will be highly successful this season.

Can someone explain why we are signing someone for every position except our #1 need: DLine? I know most of these guys will end up being practice squad or cut, and a handful will actually make the team but why no DLINEMEN?
Posted by: Go Skins Go | May 15, 2007 1:09 PM

I wonder what it would be like to be a fan of a team that wins, just change for 1 year then come back. How much stress would be released...
Posted by: dreaming | May 15, 2007 1:11 PM
So, 100,000 minus 45,700 posts leaves 45,300 to go. Divide that by (say) 200 posts per day, which leaves 226 days to reach 100,000.
Now how far off is opening day?
Posted by: Stumped | May 15, 2007 1:13 PM
It's funny how when I said not to worry about Taylor missing OTAs and enjoy the weather I got flamed on here... oh well.
At least the debate is over for now.
I was watching Sportscenter last night and they were talking about if Favre were to be traded who would pick him up? Of course the name Daniel Snyder rolled out of the sportscasters mouth. Redskins get no respect. I sure hope we turn things around this year!
Posted by: JoeyV | May 15, 2007 1:17 PM
Go Skins Go, I wonder the same thing. Perhaps these depth/practice squad signings are more about filling all of the rest of the holes before going a bit heavier in the free agent market for one or two bigger name splashes on the D line? That's my guess anyway. I don't think we're signing Dwight Freeney or anything, but probably a guy or two who can start on the line.
Posted by: nyskinsfan | May 15, 2007 1:19 PM
Well... I was wrong. Taylor didn't want more mulla, THANK GOD! I'm surprised this situation corrected itself as quick as it did. Sean is a skin, through-n-through, and I can't wait to see him play aside Landry. It will only make him a more mature athlete. The 'Skins' secondary (at first glance) looks outstanding, but I refuse to make any predictions seeing how I had them being one the power-house D's last preseason, "boy was I off".
Hey Williams, you better use these weapons wisely and bring back that hard-hitting, over-powering defense everyone loves. How can you screw this one up with newly acpuired players such as Fletcher, Smoot, and Landry? I get goosebumps just mentioning it.

Posted by: Cindy | May 15, 2007 1:37 PM
nyskinsfan,
Yeah, I hope you're right. I've heard the argument about how LBs are the key to the Williams system and I'm sure the depth at LB and DB will help play of the defensive linemen, whomever they are; BUT, games are won and lost at the line of scrimamge.
An earlier post (pre-draft) pointed out that there are a lot of young defensive already linemen on the roster. Anyone got an evaluation of these younger players?
Maybe we already have the players we need.

I can't wait to see the Reaper hit Moss this year when we play New England. I would put good money on the fact that Moss will refuse to run except for go routes down the sidelines in what will prove an unsuccesful attempt to avoid a career ending hit from the Reaper

Boy that is good news that San Taylor is at Redskin Park. I think him and LaVerne Landry will proof to be the best defensive tantrum in the entire NFL. Talk about bringing the paint! Those guys sure can deliver a blow and I'll bet Tyrell Owen will be afraid to even come out of hte dressing room!!!
Does anyone else suffer from Prickley Heat?

Alex Buzbee is a DE- they signed him. Granted he's only one guy and with a name like Buzbee will either be the greatest end in history or a 3 day sign- but he's still a dlineman.
Posted by: D7 | May 15, 2007 2:15 PM
Too bad Caulley and Marcus Mason didnt make it, I was rooting for them, especially Caulley as I remember his hs career (vaguely). Poor guy was an excellent player at UConn before tearing his knee, came back and wasn't as good, but oh well.......
And I wouldn't worry about the undrafted rooks not being DL....it's not like those guys are going to play this year anyway....the skins are just trying to find any diamonds in the rough, regardless of position. Those guys may still get cut......

That too, was the first time that I saw the ST Probowl hit. What was impressive about it was that he zipped across field through everyone to zero in on the punter. (He went by two other defensive players who were in the area.) Good foresight and ability to see the pattern of movement.

If you wanna talk youth, take a look at Kedric Golston and Anthony Montgomery; I believe both of these young DTs will have a breakout season in '07. I mean, they have to right? People will be suprised. Everyone's disscussing the 'skins "lack of talent at the D-line, but those individuals tend to forget we now have a healthy Griffin, Daniels, and ofcourse Carter. Get ready for the run-defense to make a shocking comeback next season.
Oh yeah... Lemar (at outside linebacker) will finally make the pro-bowl this year, MARK MY WORDS.

The List: Top 5 breakout players
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Joe Theismann
ESPN.com
In the NFL, rarely is star status achieved right away. Even the most talented players need time to hone their skills and learn the nuances of the pro game. Here are five players who are poised for big seasons in 2007.
Randy Moss, WR, New England Patriots: It might be odd to some that Moss is on this list because he's an established star in this league, but I really believe the expectations aren't high enough for him in New England. He's going to have a big year for the Patriots and might get his first Super Bowl ring with Tom Brady throwing to him. Expect huge numbers.
Kellen Winslow Jr., TE, Cleveland Browns: When Winslow was selected by the Browns he was brought in to elevate their offense. He has the ability to make the tough catch over the middle and also to stretch the field and take it to the third level. He hasn't fulfilled his potential thanks to injuries that have plagued both Winslow and other members of the offense. This is the season when I really think he's going to insert himself into the conversation as one of the best tight ends in the game.
Cedric Benson, RB, Chicago Bears: The ball is literally going to be in Benson's hands this season as Thomas Jones is now a Jet. Benson has shown the ability to lead this team in spurts, but now he's going to have to have to prove why he was such a high draft pick. The Bears will make it a point to get him the ball at least 20 times a game because of their shaky quarterback situation.
Jason Campbell, QB, Washington Redskins: Campbell has all the natural ability in the world, but it's his intelligence that makes him so dangerous. He understands what he's doing when he's on the field and you very rarely see the panic that shows up in young quarterbacks when the chips are down. I expect Campbell to put it together this year and make the Redskins a playoff contender.
Tony Romo, QB, Dallas Cowboys: His play tapered off at the end of the season, but he has a year under his belt and won't see anything new this season. Also, he should do a very good job of further establishing himself as the leader of this offense"
Posted by: 4th Floor | May 15, 2007 3:27 PM
As for Hilton -- I bet the Redskins no longer have roster space for four TEs, after signing Derrick Blaylock. It's the same situation as last year, where they kept four RBs and three TEs on the final roster. Although with Broughton on IR they now have an extra FB slot available.
The DL was addressed last year with the signing of DE Carter and drafting of two DTs (Golston and Montgomery). The team is obviously expecting better line play this year. The new players have a year of experience in the system and the back seven have been significantly upgraded.
BTW -- did you notice they cut another DT (Vaka Manupuna) who was on the practice squad last year...
The current roster includes plenty of young Defensive Linemen to evaluate during training camp. At most only five DTs will make the final roster -- with Griffin and Golston as the probable starters. So there will be completion for the 2-3 backup/ST positions between Alexander, Boschetti, Clauss, Montgomery, and Salave'a. They're set at DE too -- Carter and Daniels are the most likely starters -- with competition for 2-3 backup/ST positions between Wynn, Evans, Green, Sykes, Wilson, and Hickman.

4th floor (are you going back to your prior handle?) and Anonymous, I think I also read somewhere recently that the 'break out' years for players is Year 3. [except I don't think it was Theesman]. Yet another reason for my unprincipled optimism about Carlos Rogers. He had a rough sophomore year having to (1) step into the #1 CB spot and (2) play the second half of the season with screws in his thumbs. As his roommate (Jason Campbell) matures into a team leader, it doesn't seem unreasonable for Rogers to get his head straight, esp. not taking credit when the receiver misses the catch he had nothing to do with.
Nate: I like the new name for the WaPo beat writer/blog starter ... Jasno. One of the best typos yet (right up there with cload and dagger).

ES/4th floor, reading it closely now, it surprises me that Theesman FINALLY has something positive to say about the Skins, esp. the guy that used to play in his position! I love reading that positive mojo.
That said, I disagree with Thees about Kellen Winslow, Jr. A punk is a punk is a punk. His attitude had diminished his dad, the great Kellen Winslow regular. As a child raised on the Browns, I still want them to do well, but think they are at least two seasons away from where the Skins are continuity-wise, esp. having guys selected by current coach-GM combination.

Cindy, if you're ever at a loss for a new post, just work your way through the Skins' roster. (Shawn Springs and Sean Taylor working just fine as titles for the last two.) One player a day would easily get us through the dog days of June and July. Coming up with something to say about each and every dude... well, who knows about that.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | May 15, 2007 4:07 PM
need a bounce back year from doublemove, needs to live up to 9th pick in the draft status...that would be nice.
hope they find a third down de. but we don't seem to sign the right body type... long arms tall 6'4 or so.light is ok as long they have that upfield move. we seem to get short guys (sykes, hickman)? i just haven't seen the guy in the uniform who has the move.(chris clemmons) i know thats sad but that guy had some pass rush ability, i guess thats all he had in the end plus an injury and your done.
Posted by: Old School | May 15, 2007 4:07 PM
Lisa, reading through Thees' other predictions, my pscychedness about the Jason Campbell point started fading ... 1 out of 5 correct, right? To me, it seemed like Thomas Jones WAS the Bears' running game ... and Cedric Benson was like Maroney, Bush, and Jerious Norwood ... looked great because of the OTHER guy. Randy Moss having a 'break out' year? I guess ... he broke out of Oakland anyway, but his great years were in Minnesota. OK, maybe 2 out of 5 (because Romo seems to be on the same upward trajectory as Jason C.).
mmmmmmmmmm ... priiiiiiiingles ...

Nate -
That's a great idea about posting a new player each day as a new thread. It will give us all a chance to talk about each player on the roster. However, it is probably a good idea if Jasno posts a warning notice at Redskins Park, letting the players know NOT to read the blog, lest their subsequent hurt feelings cause them to play poorly and get cut.

Yeah, now I want some Pringles. The power of suggestion.
I also want Double Move to catch the damn ball. Here's hoping the power of suggestion works for him as well.
If KK can get the Reaper into offseason training activities with some kind of Jedi mind trick via this blog, anything is possible.

Old School, agreed on the DEs (surprised?). They do have some new guys who are taller, but only by a couple of inches. The problem seems to be size in terms of inertia. Wynn and Daniels are in the 280-290 range. The only one close is Demetric Evans (and he IS 6'3"). I like Evans. Seemed like he came in on passing downs. Hopefully, one of these new guys can step up to compete for his spot. They all look like they need to put on some weight to do it though. Alex Buzbee got his team's award for MVP (though MVP of Georgetown football has to be right up there with having the highest GPA in a fraternity).

Here's a link to what appears to be a very recently updated roster for the Redskins. Please note that LL is now listed as being #30 and Broughton is #36 and on IR.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this or not but there is an interview from Redskin Park today with Sean Taylor on Redskins.com
Posted by: CC | May 15, 2007 4:24 PM
CC, for some reason, I've never been able to get those videos on the Skins site to work on my machine. What did Sean Taylor have to say?
Posted by: dcsween | May 15, 2007 4:26 PM
I heard Theismann on a radio interview in the Bay Area in July 2005 where he gushed and gushed about how phenomenal Patrick Ramsey was. The interviewers (The Razor and Mr. T) really weren't interested. Theismann refused to shut up about what a star Patrick Ramsey was going to be.
The man can't be trusted on any assessment of the Redskins.
Posted by: mugamack | May 15, 2007 4:26 PM
mugamack, don't SAY that! My worst fear is that Theesman is a bizarro reporter and the opposite of what he says is true ... meaning that our QB of the present is DOOMED (via the Theesman curse).
I take comfort in Jaworski's assessment of Campbell based on film. [Even if Jaworski still has that problem with feminine whimsy in his eyewear.]
Posted by: dcsween | May 15, 2007 4:29 PM
Remember, sween, Jaws' silly glasses are only part of the problem. The biggest, clunkiest frames out there wouldn't stop the encroachment of those massive cheeks.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | May 15, 2007 4:32 PM
not only did they NOT sign any D-linemen, they actually CUT one -- Vaka Manapuna, DT -- to make room for the guys they signed.
Posted by: dcsween | May 15, 2007 02:12 PM
I think that the Redskins cutting Manapuna is a really good sign regarding the DTs. He was a big-body type, but that alone was not enough to make the final squad. That tells me that Golston and Montgomery have improved, as well as possibly Biscotti and the rest of the remaining DTs. Maybe year #2 is the step-up year for defensive lineman, and the youth movement will be led by players like Golston, Montgomery and maybe someone like Sykes. Add a healthy group of gritty veterans and a career year from Demetric Evans and who knows what might be possible.

People need to stop demanding a retraction or apology from Sally Jenkins.
Negative Redskins articles by Sally Jenkins are a good luck charm. Positive Sally Jenkins articles are Redskins killers.
Sally wrote a glowing review of the Redskins and Mark Brunell in early 2006. She even APOLOGIZED for having no character and dismissing the Redskins 5 weeks earlier. The Redskins and Brunell haven't been the same since.
We all need to send Sally a big RI thank you for this past weekend's negative article. We should pray that Jenkins doesn't write a glowing word about the Redksins all season.
Each Redskin should take a copy of Sally's last article, create a shrine for it in their locker, and offer it fresh chicken blood once a week.
Sally Jenkins is our Jobu!

Sween - They basically asked ST questions about his contract, the drafting of LL, moving to free safety, etc. He actually said that there are no contract issues and that is his happy with his contract right now. The other questions were answered by a typical Gibbs type player. "Anythng to help the team", "We here to win", etc. etc. etc.
Overall, he seems excited to be with the guys and ready to get to work which is good!

When did Sean Taylor become press-friendly at the same time as he became boring and predictable (a la Gibbs)? (Or did some Redskins PR hack make up the interview?)
We need to send KK to Redskins Park so KK can ask Sean where the hell he was last week.

Hello everyone.
One first post since last year.
The post on dcoptimist was hilarios. I liked this part:
This is sure to pain the Washington Post and noted optimism-hater Sally Jenkins, who sensing a possible shot opportunity of the cheap variety, never fails to levy 872 rounds at the braintrust. Wonder if I can come up with a space metaphor that describes this piece? How about a knowledge black hole, where tiny particles of insight vaporize into a massive gap of blathering, never to return.

Also, after having drunk a fair amount of Kool Aid, i'm making a prediction as to which 'Skin makes the pro-bowl:

WTF on Philly's anniversary unis? Holy Shti are they heinous! They may give the Eeegs an unfair advantage because their heinosity will distract opposing teams.

sfskin, I just sent the team an e-mail asking for any inside dope. All they have on redskins.com are a couple of lame hats. Well, they're not super lame, but they don't give any idea whether we're going to have throwback unis. (I hated the 70th anniv throwbacks, but I know a lot of people liked them.)
I actually kind of like the Philly throwbacks for this year, just because they are so incredibly ugly. Like, record-breaking uglitude. It will take a lot of courage to put that on and run out of the tunnel.

Anyone else watch that Sean Taylor interview on Redskins.com? Did The Reaper go to charm school? That was a polished interview.
Sean Taylor saying he's fine with his contract and the Redskins are one big happy family this year? Sean Taylor saying he's not a mentor to Landry, but all of the safeties would work together to get Landry up to speed? Did anyone have hopes that things could be this good?
All hail Jobu.

Learned (Don't Call Me Leonard) Hand in the house!
Back to the idea of expanding the regular season schedule to 17 games -- which I realize is just a trial balloon idea at this point. How would they match up teams for that seventeenth game? Has anyone seen proposals on this?
The 32-team league scheduling already has such symmetry: 6 intra-division games, 4 games against another division in the same conference, 2 games against teams from the other divisions in the same conference, 4 games against a division in the other conference.
So... how would they pick that oddball game? Regional rivalries, where possible? A random team who's not already on the schedule? You guys have any ideas?
I like the idea in general, but I have a bad feeling that this 17th game would guarantee that we play Tampa every damn season. Maybe even play them TWICE like we did that awful season in the 90's. Aaaargh.
Going to get some Pringles.

Yeah, Otter, but I did like those helmets with the feather that reached from the back to the front. It was an awful thing when George Allen re-designed the helmets ( and sat Fat Sonny down , too)
Posted by: Neil in Durango | May 15, 2007 5:25 PM
Nate -
Since the foreign fans will probably want the big name/successful teams to win, the easiest way to accomplish that is to use the draft order for the current year. Then the schedule can be set up like this -
#1 (Oakland) plays #32 (Indianapolis)
#2 (Detroit) plays #31 (Chicago)
#3 plays #30
#4 plays #29
and so on.
It doesn't matter if division rivals have to play each other a 3rd time - just make the foreign games not count in the end-of-year tie-breakers. The response for any lower team that complains about the system? "Play better."

Picking the matchups for the 17th game should be a complete nightmare, but I heard another suggestion to change the universe that I like better than the 17th game.
Let teams pick where they want to draft. The team that normally has the first pick of the draft can instead pick where they want to be in the draft order. Perenniel (sp?) losers like Oakland and Detroit can select where they choose, instead of having to overpay a guy who is expected to change the entire team. The result is that they can spread around the money more effectively. This year, Skins wouldn't have had to pick #6 if they didn't want to ... they could have picked higher or lower depending on what would remain available.
Posted by: dcsween | May 15, 2007 5:35 PM
KK, Otter, that's why I posted it, it just occurred to me I didn't really have any idea how they'd pick that 17th opponent. Man, playing the Ravens every year, and TWICE when we play the entire AFC North, would be INCREDIBLE.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | May 15, 2007 5:37 PM
If we have a 17th game I vote we play Dallas. Then I can foam at the mouth THREE times a season!
I vote Huff helmet.
Posted by: sfskin | May 15, 2007 5:39 PM
So here is the complete foreign schedule, according to my system -
Oakland vs. Indianapolis
Detroit vs. Chicago
Cleveland vs. San Diego
Tampa Bay vs. Baltimore
Arizona vs. New England
Washington vs. New Orleans
Minnesota vs. Philadelphia
Houston vs. NY Jets
Miami vs. Seattle
Atlanta vs. Kansas City
San Francisco vs. Dallas
Buffalo vs. Denver
St Louis vs. NY Giants
Carolina vs. Tennessee
Pittsburgh vs. Cincinnati
Green Bay vs. Jacksonville
Many of them are matchups you rarely see.

Allen redesigned the uniforms. Gibbs fixed his eccentric taste. I liked the only ones with the spear on the helmet.
To the novitiate troll hunters: Who is the best running back in redskins history?
NO it isn't Riggins. Its Larry Brown. When Gale Sayers was an analyst (he is considered the best running back ever ... BGOS (Before good orthopedic surgeons) ) once was asked to compare OJ Simpson and Larry Brown at their height. He picked Brown because of the way he ran. He never stopped, he struggled for every inch, every yard. And he would sometimes break away when least expected. Came from the tough streets of Pittsburgh where he had to struggle for everything. Including a place on the Redskins roster. Had a disability in which he could not hear in one ear. Lombardi found a way around that.
Both Brown and Sayers suffered knee injuries that ended their careers. Now they fix those things and send them back for a while longer.

Posted by: Stumped | May 15, 2007 6:26 PM
You could also see Sonny on the end of the bench having a smoke. They played a different type of football then. it wasn't the smack hits of today, the palyers weren't sheathed in muscle, which isn't a criticism of either era.

Lisa,
I thought you might like that Sean Taylor interview - he reminded me of Shawn Springs. I couldn't believe how easily Taylor fielded questions. Now we know why he missed last week's OTA's: The South Florida ToastMasters convention is the first week of May.

NOOOOO!!!! Portis NOOOOOOO!!!!!
Posted by: mugamack | May 15, 2007 7:03 PM
It's ok. Good players like Portis can make predictions because they have the ability to follow through on them. Crappy players like Mark Brunell can not.
That interview was the most that I have heard Taylor talk. Very different from what you see on the field and read about him.
Posted by: cdubb | May 15, 2007 7:24 PM
> You could also see Sonny on the end of the bench
> having a smoke.
Was it a cigar? Shows your ignorance. Billy the "K" Kilmer was once a scrambling QB. Brody was the passer in SF. He lost that ability in a car accident (likely a DUI).
These were tough guys. The lines Brown ran behind were really small and slow. Rock, Schoenke, Hauss, and even Starke. The defenses were BIGGER and STRONGER. AND the rules were different. Ever see a clothes hanger tackle? Everything they outlaw today was legal then. Ever watch Pat Fischer grab a receiver by the gonads?
Poor Sayers was a target both on KO returns, Punt returns, running and catching the ball. He was so good they used to go after him in pile ups. He didn't last long. Brown was tougher. That's why James Brown's record was so amazing and lasted so long. HE WAS TOUGH, but then HIS FAVORITE SPORT was LAX (lacrosse to you novitiate troll hunters).
He was the best LAX player in the world while at Syracuse University.
Kilmer and Jurgenson were both a lot tougher than they looked. Theisman learned to be "tough" and never come out from them. As was the dancing bear Ron McDole, Diron Talbert, Vernon Biggs, Bill Brundige, and the rest of the "Over-the-Hill" gang. Deacon Jones is still considered the best defensive end ever. He, like Bruce Smith, played for the 'Skins at the end of his career.
Posted by: periculum | May 15, 2007 7:26 PM
George Michael was interviewed on SportsTalk980 last week and he commented that Sean Taylor is a very nice young man and that he likes him very much. After Sean's interview today, I can see why.
Posted by: Lisa | May 15, 2007 7:31 PM
Portis is right Gibbs is going to kill him.
But its a decent possibility. IF Jason Campbell steps up as Theismann predicts then it stands to reason. If they had been able to draft CJ who knows? But for now Detroit looks like a lock if they can get a handle on QB. They have 4 excellent wide receivers they can put into a 4 WR spread ala' the 3 amigos of Redskins past. Or the posse. And they have a decent running back to boot.
I think the 'Skins will surprise people on defense but injuries (yes admittedly due to age) will likely hinder them toward the end. The offense should be much improved.
Their toughest battles and the telling tale will be in their own division. If they can win 5 out of 6 then they may get to the championship game. If they can win 6 out of 6 the superbowl might be feasible.

ESPN Chat:
Kevin (Manassas): How good can Laron Landry be, and what are your thoughts on the Skins going into the second year of Saunders offense with Campbell?
Dan Arkush: I think he can be very good, Kevin, but here's the biggest question: HOW MUCH ARE THE SKINS GOING TO PAY HIM???/ You can bet your bottom dollar that Sean Taylor is waiting for an answer to that question. As for the offense under Saunders in Year Two, I see substantial improvement. I also see a big bounce-back year for Clinton Portis.

Posted by: kost52 | May 15, 2007 10:16 PM
I think that if the NFL is going to go ahead with these international games, first thing they need to make sure they don't do, is price themselves out of the market. If the point of the exercise is to bring the game to the world, they shouldn't be aiming to make a profit from it, in the short term anyway. They need to understand, that whichever country they are going to play in, there will already be existing sports which have ingrown roots. The NFL isn't going to break those roots by charging an arm and a leg for a ticket. Of course there will be die hard fans, such as myself, who would pay almost any price just to see a game, regardless of who is playing, but if they want this experiment to work, they're going to have to appeal to people who have little to no interest in the game. Cheaper tickets, equals bigger crowds, which enhances the atmosphere/experience which then in turn increases the chance of repeat customers.
When the Broncos and the Chargers came out to Sydney in 2000, they had a very poor turn out, because tickets were just to pricey. I could go to 4-5 Aussies Rules games for the price I paid for my ticket.

Posted by: Sam Adams | May 15, 2007 11:06 PM
Let me tell you young folks something:
I still see the images of Charley Taylor catching those clutch TD passes vs. Dallas in the '72 NFC championship game. It was Charley Taylor who helped create the rules against the crackback block because he was so deadly with it. He could catch a pass anywhere on the field, and run with the ball afterwards.
If you want to see footage of a true passer, find some stuff on Sonny Jergensen. THERE WAS NO BETTER PURE PASSER THAN #9, and I don't think I've seen anyone throw the ball since better than he did. Eyeblink release, could make every throw, fearless competitor, and that beer belly to go with it! Billy Kilmer may have been the inspirational leader, but a healthy Sonny would have found away to move the ball against that Miami defense in Super Bowl VII, as he proved the next year against them in that great come-from-behind 1 point victory (that TD pass to FB Larry Smith crossing the end zone by inches).
Jergensen-Taylor was at least as deadly as Manning-Harrison or Bradshaw-Swann, and that was back when receivers could be chucked and bumped all the way down the field. Two legit HOF'mers as well as 'Skin legends.
As for the team's uniforms, where's the campaign to make the 70th Anniversary uni's permanent? Nothing looked better than that classic burgundy and gold, and the spear on the helmet would certainly mollify the PC crowd a little

adinasi, maybe it was the gold pants that put me off the 70th anniversary unis. The only yellow pants that 'work' for me are Green Bay's. I think the Skins should have gone with white trousers to go with the dark throwback burgundy jerseys, which were okay.
Maybe my opinion of the unis is colored by my memories of that awful year, Spurrier's first season, the horrible Ramsey/Matthews/Woefful shabingus. And another miserable season of the Bruce Smith me-first sack record death march. Ugh.

I watched the Reaper video and was stunned. He seems like such a nice, personable dude. Why was I stunned? I guess all the demonizing of him up here has made me think he's some kind of unrepentant thug. Shame on me. He seems like a great guy, and now that he's taking part in the Activities and saying the right things, maybe we can put all that ugly speculation and character assassination behind us. And just get back to the funny jokes about the Reaper's legendary prowess...

Taylor's absence for the first week of OTA's was planned by the coaching staff. After he attended all the OTA's last season, they found that majority of the players struggled all season, (especially Lloyd) since they were constantly expecting a hit from ST. Joe Gibbs spent the entire first week of the OTA's trying to get his team to understand that he's on their side, by using this mantra:
"Don't fear the Reaper"

TAYLOR NOT PUSHING FOR NEW CONTRACT, YET
A league source tells us that the decision of Redskins safety Sean Taylor to skip the first week of offseason practices (known as Organized Team Activities) and to show up for the second week of workouts is unrelated to his contract, or any lack of satisfaction therewith.
Though Taylor was unhappy with his contract not long after it was signed nearly three years ago, he is confident (we're told) that the deal will be renegotiated at the appropriate time.
There is some thought that a new deal could come after the 2007 season.
Taylor was the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft. In the past, he has spent most of the offseason in Miami. The team was under the impression that he would show up for the first week of OTA's, and some players reportedly concluded that his absence was related to unhappiness with his contract."
Posted by: 4th floor via PFT | May 16, 2007 6:53 AM
I'm sure the Skins made some assurances to Taylor about his contract getting redone. Otherwise I dont think he shows up. We all know it is was in his best interest to show up regardless after what happened the last time he skipped OTA's.

Not sure if this has been posted by someone else but check out what Clinton Portis had to say about this upcoming season (from Wash Times)...
I got an interesting e-mail late last night about Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis' upcoming appearance on the BET sports talk show "Ballers." Portis taped an episode that is set to appear Tuesday at 11 p.m. The show is hosted by former NBAer John Salley, former NFLer Hugh Douglas and comedian Guy Torry.
A partial transcript was emailed out last night and here is the one quote that jumped off the page. Asked about the Redskins' outlook in 2007, Clinton said ...
"I think this year we're going to make a lot of news. We went out and got what we needed. I actually think this will be our year. We're going to be in the NFC championship game. I guarantee that. Whatever that takes, we're going to get there."
Translation: Portis is back to being his usual confident and loquacious self. But the NFC title game? Probably shooting a little high, but I like his candor.
Portis, who missed half of last season with shoulder and hand injuries, was also asked if the game had passed Joe Gibbs by.
Portis said: "Time is knowledge. I think Coach Gibbs is one of the most knowledgeable people you'll ever meet. I think there's a lot of people when you are losing, they are going to point the finger at everybody. Coach, myself, Mr. Snyder and anybody else they can point it at. Once you are winning, Coach Gibbs is a genius. So we just got to win for Coach."
Posted by: Rob | May 16, 2007 7:20 AM
Too bad Portis can't carry the team on his back -- an RB can't do it alone.
Was last year Portis' first major injury? If so, I gotta believe that he is just chomping at the bit to get back on the field.
Portis can help Soup a lot, but Soup and Soup alone controls how far the skins will go.

Chris Leak states that "the Bears are the best situation for me".
Because Rex freakin' Grossman is the freakin' starter! I mean, c'mon -- talk about a no-brainer.
Next thing you know, he'll come out in favor of free beer.
Posted by: cload and daggar | May 16, 2007 8:03 AM
sween,
I absolutely love your idea about the draft. I still wish the NFL would limit these rookie deals though...
Otter, as far as the 17th game, I like your idea, but I wouldn't mind seeing the 17th game be a permanent, annual, rivalary game against a non-conference team. Ravens-Skins, Jets-Giants, Raiders-Niners, etc. Each team would link up to a rival in the other conference and they would alternate home and away every year.
The game overseas would be one of your other non-conference games. If it occured in year that we were already playing the AFC North, we would play the Ravens twice.
What do you guys think?
Oh, and speaking of the Ravens, I'm suprised I didn't seem them more on people's hate list. I despise them, but maybe that's because I live closer to, and went to school near, Baltimore.
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | May 16, 2007 8:09 AM
Thank you Portis!
I can't get enough Redskins optimism, that's exactly what this team needs. (Assuming those are his exact words), It's obvious he's ready to make a statement this season; not only due to the fact he was injured almost all of last season, but also because Betts is making his talent known (1000 yrds in 8 games).
With the double-team of Portis and Betts, look for Clinton to have fresh legs everytime he touches the ball. Think about how the Saints use McAllister and Bush, that's the way I see the coaching staff working out the Betts-Portis combination.
Oh yeah... and we finally have a feared QB in Campbell. "Feared" in the sense teams are hesitant to underestimate his long-ball, and at the same time, afraid to give him space because of his strong rushing game. And he will have a had a complete off-season learing the Saunders system (as a starter).
I can't wait!

RB- the Ravens play in the wrong conference, and never play the skins; have they ever played an important game together -- particularly one that we lost?
Posted by: cload and daggar | May 16, 2007 8:27 AM
Let teams pick where they want to draft. The team that normally has the first pick of the draft can instead pick where they want to be in the draft order. This year, Skins wouldn't have had to pick #6 if they didn't want to ... they could have picked higher or lower depending on what would remain available.
Posted by: dcsween | May 15, 2007 05:35 PM
Sween, Ricky Bobby--
In fact, this is exactly how the draft works already. Any team can use its assigned pick or pick as much lower as it wants. If the 'Skins had wanted to pick, say, tenth then all they had to do was use up their time on the clock without picking. Once you use up your time, the next team picks. The fact that no teams ever do this on purpose (Minnesota did it by accident a few years ago) makes you think that they'd all rather pick high and pay the money. "You pays your money and you takes your chances."
RB--Rookie deals are limited by the rookie pool. You may want a different type of limit, but they are already limited. And, I love the Ravens. Very classy organization. But, I love the 'Skins much more.

Sean Talyor attends OTAs!!!
What does it mean now that he is attending??!!??
There must be hidden meaning in here somewhere...
I know! Sean Taylor showed up to these OTAs because he secretly hates the 'skins and wants to destroy the team - yeah, that's it! And of course, Sean Taylor showing up really reveals how dysfunctional the 'skins front office is, right? Anyone? Jenkins? JLC? Bueller?
Posted by: Jenkins is a Hack | May 16, 2007 8:35 AM
Sween, Ricky Bobby,
The interesting question is what would happen if all 32 teams decided that there was no player worth "first pick money"? All thirty two would use up their 15 minutes on the clock. Eight hours of watching the draft, and not a single pick.
What would Mel Kiper and Chris Berman be left to say after eight hours with no picks? Now, there's some must-see TV. Like watching C-SPAN.
Posted by: KK | May 16, 2007 8:46 AM
KK -- the rookie cap only applies to the first year of the player's contract. Double Vision, for example, sounds like he'll get $15-18M guaranteed; the question will be how long will that be spread over? That's how Taylor got a 7-year deal (might say "stuck with"). Big signing bonus, small 2007 salary, guaranteed roster bonuses in 2008/2009/2011 -- does that mean a 7-year deal too?
Posted by: cload and daggar | May 16, 2007 8:54 AM
Cload,
I understand. You may want a more stringent limit, but this is what the league and the union negotiated.
The rookie pool limits the first year pay and shapes the rest of the years. The reason Taylor got as much guaranteed money as he did was because he was willing to spread it over a seven-year contract. If he'd wanted a three-year contract, he would have had to take much less guaranteed money. If Landry wants $15-$18 million guaranteed, he will have to take it over a long contract to fit it into the 'Skins $3.4 million rookie pool. Or am I missing something?

Old School, my same thought about Portis. It's time to start talking big b/c his audience right now is the players. He is a team leader, if not THE team leader, and a motivator. It wouldn't surprise me if Taylor's Week at Bernie's was something Portis and he discussed ("Sean, just take a week off, you make your point, but show up the next week all smiles like nothing happened."). Guys from The U and all that.

Reggie Bush signed a six-year contract with the Saints in 2006 that guarantees $26.3 million with a $51 million total. Additional incentives, if met, increase the deal's value to $62 million.
New Orleans had 8 picks in the 2006 draft for a rookie pool of $5,220,174. So where is the alleged rookie cap? Nowhere to be seen, because the system is a joke.
Posted by: DD | May 16, 2007 9:38 AM
kk - that nails it as far as I can tell.
Note that the max length of contract for a non-first rounder is four years, which gets you out of restricted FA -- but will tend to limit the amount of any signing bonuses to early-second rounders...
Posted by: cload and daggar | May 16, 2007 9:43 AM
Vernon Davis was selected sixth overall in the first round by the San Francisco 49ers. He signed a five-year, $23 million contract (including $15.2 million in guaranteed money).
San Francisco had 9 draft choices in 2006 and a rookie pool of $5,646,962.
Posted by: DD | May 16, 2007 9:47 AM
So what was Davis' 2006 cap hit?
Posted by: cload and daggar | May 16, 2007 9:50 AM
Cload, DD--
How much do you think they would have gotten if there hadn't been a rookie pool? Less or more?
Vernon Davis's deal is consistent with the cap, and about what Laron Landry will get. His rookie number is about $3.3 million, leaving plenty of space for the other eight.
Bush's I can't make sense of.
Posted by: KK | May 16, 2007 9:57 AM
You got $3.3M by dividing $15M guaranteed by 5? Possibly, but it makes sense to divide the bonus into two parts -- like we did with Archie, or just did with Jansen this year -- $7.5M in 2006, $7.5M in 2007 or 2008. His cap number for 2006 would be 1.5M or so ($7.5M / 5) + min salary ($300K)...
Cash-up-front (or guaranteed cash anytime) gives you a lot of cap flexibility...

Posted by: SMACK | May 16, 2007 10:16 AM
Vernon Davis - These are the best numbers I could find. There is no guarantee they are correct, since the numbers available did not add up to the guarantee or the total of the contract.
5 years - $23,000,000
Guaranteed - $15,200,000
Signing Bonus - $11,650,000
Pro-rated - $2,330,000/yr.
2006 Cap Hit - $2,605,000 ($275,000 salary)
2007 Cap Hit - $2,690,000 ($360,000 salary)
2008 Cap Hit - $3,230,000 ($900,000)
2009 Cap Hit - $3,770,000 ($1,440,000)
2010 Cap Hit - $4,310,000 ($1,980,000)
Total Cap Hit - $16,605,000
There is approximately $6,500,000 unaccounted for, likely to be in some combination of incentives and additional bonus money. If they were to cut him or lose him to injury, they would be on the hook for most of the cap money listed above.
Posted by: DD | May 16, 2007 10:55 AM
To stay with in the rookie cap pool, teams usually have an option bonus that is usually bigger than the original signing bonus that is gaurrenteed in the 2nd year.......
In the 1st round, you can stretch out the length of the contract up to 7 years and make the last 2 voidable, such as Sean Taylor's......
Posted by: 4th Floor | May 16, 2007 11:04 AM
So a hypothetical contract for Landry might be 5 years with $15,000,000 signing bonus. His 2007 cap number would be $3,000,000 + 285,000 (rookie minimum) = $ 3,285,000. All of the signing bonus would be guaranteed money and would count $3,000,000 each year against the cap for 5 years. Additional bonuses and incentives could increase the total value of the contract but would not be guaranteed.
Posted by: DD | May 16, 2007 11:05 AM
I'm glad to see Portis' optimism. I'm also hoping we start seeing those costumes again!
I remember when Brunnell went on about how "anything less than going all the way would be a disappointment." Hopefully the second time's a charm. At the very least, we have a better shot without cautious-McHasBeen at the QB position, but what do I know?
Campbell looked really good in that Giants game last year, I think it was a preview of whats to come.
The worst part of living in Indiana: no regional Skins games (but the only one I got last year, and boy it was a good one, was the Cowboys-Skins game that ended with Taylor running, getting facemasked, and the winning kick. Ahhh... glorious).
Posted by: TDawg623 | May 16, 2007 11:12 AM
Wow. I am starting to think Sally is a reverse good luck charm for the Skins. She puts something out there and they have something positive happen. I am unclear why the Post has such a consistent negative spin on this team. They won a playoff game two seasons ago. They were heavily injured last year and were rotating rookies on the D-line. Defensive backfield was w/o 3 starters for most of the season. Rogers had pins in his thumb and Sean Taylor had an injured shoulder. Marcus Washington was injured most of the season and missed the last couple of games. Though admittedly slow to do so, they switched to Jason Campbell. Growing pains there, which should pay dividends this year. No Clinton Portis for the second half of the season. The one thing Gibbs needed to learn is to realize with the cap, he can not have depth at all of his positions. However, to question his ability to work with and manage people is ludicrous on her part. She needs to understand what he is trying to do with these guys. He is very reserved and is not one to work things out in the media. If he says something I think it is measured and not for controversy. Other than the Eagles, who in the NFC East has a winning record in the playtoffs this decade? No one since the Giants went to the SB in 2000. I look at it like a new CEO that takes over a struggling company. You heard of Louis Gerstner? He took over IBM when it was in the tank and brought it back to prominence. Gibbs has changed a losing culture and brought an identity. He was never a front office guy and has made some mistakes like with Archuleta. Unfortunately, his owner this time around does not have the smarts to get a guy like Beathard for him. Question that, not the coach that is an absolute master with people, in the NFL and NASCAR...
Posted by: Csquared | May 16, 2007 11:15 AM
Am I the only one who thinks Portis going on a media campaign to announce the Redskins will make the NFC Championship is a bad idea?
Why give other teams bulletin board material?
Why give the a-holes on Around The Horn ammunition to rip the Skins with?
I'm fine with confidence, but why not show quiet confidence (hard for Portis, I know) and attempt to sneak up on the rest of the league?
I blame the coaches on this one - it should have been drilled into the players from day one - NO TALK ABOUT THE PLAYOFFS.
Posted by: mugamack | May 16, 2007 11:23 AM
Squeeze the "hemmy"? Been watching Charter commercials? Nah, need something for the
plantar fasciatis though. And the odd hernia.
Bottom line on Portis prediction. If Gibbs can pull yet another miracle (Theisman, Schreoder, Rypien, Humpheries) and Jason Campbell becomes a more effective QB than Eli Manning and not too far from reaching Donovan McNabb ... then, yeah, they could do it. A lot of pressure on the young guy though and then there are always injuries ... especially at QB.
I think the defense has some "hosses". However, at this point playing a 3-4-4 might make more sense given the situation at end. They could then field reasonably talented and younger "packages". A problem would still persist at corner where Smoot and Rogers would be expected to rise up to previous expectations. Right now, "snapshot in time", they look a lot like the Ravens. Linebackers: McIntosh, Marshall, Washington, Fletcher. Plus lots of depth at LB. DL: Carter, Golston, Griffin backed by Evans, Montgomery, and ???. You could then release Daniels and Wynn. They still need a receiver to go with Moss and Randle El. Thrash is the closest they have and will likely be the one. Maybe Espy will step up. Don't expect anything from Loyd ... unless Gibbs pulls yet another miracle and turns him into Gary Clarke. Unlikely but possible I suppose.
Posted by: periculum | May 16, 2007 11:26 AM
mugamack, I also wish Portis had not mentioned going to the NFC Championship game. However, in the interview I saw Portis said "Why not? We have the talent and need to go for it now. If we do not win this year the organization will probably be blown up...." or words to that effect. He did say he likes what he sees so far.

I really want to like Brandon Lloyd. I really do.
I also want him to drop the attitude and BE the next Gary Clark. Some of those catches in San Fran were amazing, he just needs to cool out and PLAY. I think he has the potential to be an elite player, but not until he stops being a whiny baby.
