Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

This Week in Redskins

Jasno continues to relax. He was in the office last week in plaid shorts....
There are no OTAs this week because of the holiday. They'll be held next week and the following week (three days each -- June 5-7 and June 12-14). After that, it's minicamp June 15-17.
At the moment, we expect little news at the end of the week on roster trims.

Lamer!

In case anyone's thirsty in enemy lands, I'll repeat:

Anyone ever been down to the Independence Park/Penn's Landing area in Philly? Great bar-hopping area. My favorite, solely because of the name, is a place called Drinkers. I also enjoy Rotten Ralph's.

Jasno?

Posted by: Jasno? | May 29, 2007 2:18 PM

Cindy- I love the fact that you're promoting the Jasno moniker.

Plaid, aye? Plaid Jasno is....

Plasno?

hmmmmmm...

Posted by: D7 | May 29, 2007 2:23 PM

Does anybody know Roger clemens ERA in 1994?

Posted by: Saggy | May 29, 2007 2:24 PM

I thought plaid shorts before Memorial Day are a no-no. (Perhaps a Jasno-no?)

Thanks for the new post, Cindy! Let's see what we can make of this one.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | May 29, 2007 2:25 PM

2.85

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 2:27 PM

Jasno LaPlaidfora?

Posted by: D7 | May 29, 2007 2:27 PM

Plasno! I think plaid shorts are good any time. White shorts, tho.....only from Memorial to Labor Day.

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 2:29 PM

Yes, I'm 6 years old. Sorry! ;)

Posted by: D7 | May 29, 2007 2:31 PM

Sweet, just won a quick $5.

Posted by: Saggy | May 29, 2007 2:31 PM

This is the best: Jasno LaPlaidfora!!!
He looked great. He's always ahead of the fashion trends, like when he wore a pink tie in here years ago, when he was covering the Caps. We gave him grief, then saw pink ties everywhere. Well, almost everywhere....

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 2:32 PM

Cyn Cyty, is 2.85 Clemens ERA in '94? If so, that's hilarious ... and no one can do your job better than you!

p.s. from the last thread: I was under the impression that vaherder was, in fact, a Skins fan who -- like most of us -- is unhappy with the team and -- like about a third of us -- is pessimistic about this season (the second third being optimistic and the final third being insane virtual graffitti artists).

Posted by: dcsween | May 29, 2007 2:33 PM

Who knew plaid was so versatile?

Posted by: Roger Irrelevant | May 29, 2007 2:33 PM

Since there is no news, we may have to settle for malapropisms and typos.

Who is Barno?

Posted by: Stumped | May 29, 2007 2:35 PM

2.85 was clemens' era in '94. his full name is william roger clemens.

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 2:37 PM

With NO Skins news this week, can we assume that its stats week? and other things only vaguely related to football? If so and if this part of this thread is about fashion and Jasno LaPlaidfora, then is it time to notice the size of the knot in Jasno's tie in the upper left hand corner of the RI site? I've eaten watermelons smaller than the size of that knot.

Posted by: dcsween | May 29, 2007 2:37 PM

Hey Nate, what's the best way to score some tickets for our "clash of the titans" in game 1? And how many of the 'real' RI peeps will be there? I'd like to know the skins fans around me are relatively friendly!

Posted by: Redcoat | May 29, 2007 2:37 PM

Redcoat -

I'll be there, but I'm afraid I only barely qualify as a D-list peep.

Posted by: etrod | May 29, 2007 2:39 PM

Good point on the knot. Let's talk stats. Fashion schmashion.

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 2:39 PM

Posted by: jm220 | May 29, 2007 2:40 PM

cindy, without looking what's maddox's (the baseball player not angelina jolie's son's) lifetime OBP?

Posted by: dealer | May 29, 2007 2:41 PM

Stumped, Barno is a real blogger from RI earlier in the season. There was a time when the biggest non-Skins topic for discussion was heavy metal (esp. b/c Jasno is a metal fan and participated alot on that topic). Not sure of the logistics, but Barno got a CD called "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" to JLaC so that he could share it with Cooley in exchange for an autograph. Apparently, Cooley is also a metal head. Of course, Cooley either lost or bogarted the CD, but he never autographed it and definitely never gave it back to JLaC. Barno still blames Jasno for this tragedy.

Posted by: dcsween | May 29, 2007 2:41 PM

Does anyone else pre-tie? I like being able to grab and go with minimal work.

Posted by: etrod | May 29, 2007 2:42 PM

All righty then, question #2 for another $5....Does anybody know John Kitna's QB rating in 1998?

Posted by: Saggy | May 29, 2007 2:43 PM

72.3

Posted by: etrod | May 29, 2007 2:45 PM

Greg or Garry?

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 2:48 PM

Or Tommy Maddox's On Bench Percentage (OBP)?

Posted by: CC | May 29, 2007 2:50 PM

etrod, i got you beat. i don't even do that. i put it on like a scarf. (and for those of you keeping track. yes, cabbies wear ties too).

redcoat, if you really want to go i have some really bad seats. you're more than welcome to get it for face value (actually hold that thought)...

nate-o, you want to do an auction for NoLa trip? i'm thinking the first game tix will be the most valuable ;)

Posted by: dealer | May 29, 2007 2:52 PM

wow! cindy, i'm impressed. i meant greg though.

I'm an actuary!

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 2:58 PM

Cindy, you are startlingly generating amazing statistics (not startling b/c you are a woman -- and Malibu Stacy says math is hard -- but startling b/c you are responding so quickly).

If you really are able to find stats so quickly with your Crazy Eight Ball for statistics, do you know the NFL "average" for QB ratings and completion within the redzone (opponents 19-1)? We had a little discussiona about Jason Campbell's numbers in the redzone last week and I pulled some stuff out of my as-pirations. I'm trying to figure out what it means be better than average in the redzone.

Plan B would be to let us know whether there is some miraculous stats website that firmly establishes you in the category of "best sports editors ever".

Posted by: dcsween | May 29, 2007 3:07 PM

Hi Etrod, maybe I'll see you there then. Dealer, I may take you up on your kind offer.
Whyfor are the seats bad? View or 'locale'?

Posted by: Redcoat | May 29, 2007 3:08 PM

Cindy,

What is the air speed velocity of two coconut laden swallows? Only one right answer, by the way.

Posted by: Larry Bud | May 29, 2007 3:08 PM

Sween, that one is gonna give me pause. (Math really IS hard. It makes my hair hurt.) But surely we can find it on the Internets....

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 3:10 PM

Do you mean an African or an European swallow?

Posted by: Redcoat | May 29, 2007 3:10 PM

Obviously a fraudulent post. Actuaries do not use exclamation points -- it's too risky!

Posted by: cload and daggar | May 29, 2007 3:11 PM

Sween - The guy you are talking about sounded very much like a Giant's fan, so I had to take care of him. I saw nothing redskined about him.

Posted by: Cindy | May 29, 2007 3:27 PM

Apropos nothing in particular, in my early teens they would show a movie in the assembly hall at Christmas. When I was 14 it was "Holy Grail", the next year it was "Funny Girl". I never forgave the system for raising my hopes so high and then crushing them again.

Posted by: Redcoat | May 29, 2007 3:29 PM

Redcoat, apparently you can score good seats in the parking lot before kickoff for five bucks and a bag of weed, to paraphrase a heartbroken Ricky Bobby. There might be a surcharge for Fins fans.

StubHub, the 'official' ticket-scalping partner of the Washington Redskins, has tickets for the Miami game starting at $125 each. Not sure how much that is above face value.

Or maybe someone like dealer holdsclaw will hook you up with a deal on tix up here. You seem like a nice enough fellow, even if you're rooting for the visitors.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | May 29, 2007 3:58 PM

Thanks Nate. I'll let you guys know when I score some tickets (don't think I'll take the weed route though) and we can look forward to a whole summer of trash talk about the game followed by crushing disappointment for one of us..... :)

Got my question answered on an ESPN chat:

Greg(Boston): What kind of year do you see Jason Campbell having?? What about Clinton Portis?? Thanks.

Chris Neubauer: (4:35 PM ET ) I've heard nothing but positive news from Jason Campbell this offseason. I think he could be in store for a breakout season. With the emergence of Ladell Betts last season, the Redskins don't have to rush foot-in-the-mouth Clinton Portis back. That said, Portis injury does not sound good.

May sound like a dumb question but I have already learned my lesson once (cowboys fan)

Its ok to marry a Bronco fan right?

Cheyenne- As long as the video of the 2nd quarter of SB XXII is shown at the reception, then yes, you can marry her

Cheyenne,

My experience growing up in a family of Bronco fans except for me, and in Bronco country (Western Nebraska), I think it will be safe. You have 2 ultimate trumps on all trash talk that they have. 1) We beat them in the SB, bad. and 2) We have more Lombardis than they do.

Its ok to marry a Bronco fan right?

1) They're loud and opinionated but can be quited with a review of superbowl results. A cookie helps, too.
2) They can be cute when they get mad at their team. Comforting them after a loss is difficult, sharing in their triumph is more fun, nudge *wink*.
3)The Doncos do play the 'skins in Denver every 6(?) years. A trip to the "city" is always welcome.
4) They don't take kindly to the names "Doncos, Donkeys, Nags (oops) or any other such dis-respectful refeerence to THEIR team.
5) You'll have to listen to what a great coach Shanahan is (maybe) and great owner Bowlen is (probably).
6)They can look real c-u-t-e in chaps or out of them.
7) I have to ask my Donc's fan what other good reasons there are to marry a Nags fan.

Posted by: cdubb | May 29, 2007 7:53 PM

Okay folks, I need some help.
Life is sad out here in Indiana because the Skins aren't playing in Indy, Cincinnati, or Chicago this year, so I'm committed to going to the closest away game to here (which I think is either at Green Bay or Minnesota) or travel out to D.C. and see 'em.

Been looking at stub hub and it looks like the home games would be the cheapest way to go, so I'm trying to figure out which should be a better game-- Redskins-Cardinals or Redskins-Bills? (those have the cheapest tix so far, some still at $20 a pop) I'm inclined to the latter because I was a kid during that Super Bowl... damn fine memories.

Anyone wanna offer some sound advice?

Posted by: TDawg623 | May 29, 2007 8:08 PM

"All this Portis is not healthy stuff" is probably some smack so he doesn't have to play in the preseason games. Unlike last year.

Posted by: Anonymous | May 29, 2007 8:17 PM

Don't cha think if the injury was about Portis missing pre-season games the injury might occur a little later in the year, say August?

Wasn't it a knee injury (strain) that was mentioned as the issue?

Am I the only one who HATES Comcast??? I just got a notice in a mail today about them charging me extra for the NFL Network. The thing I hate is how they keep saying that by adding them to their sports entertainment package it stops those who are not NFL fans from having to pay more because the NFL Network was part of the regular digital cable package, but removing it from the regular digital service will not decrease my bill at all. It only INcreases it if I want to keep the damn channel. I am not a happy camper at all.

ok guys, that's cool...ignore me completely. it's not like it hurts my feelings or anything...or that Im thinking about...cuz im not!! im just gonna sit over here in the corner or something, but really guys it doesn't hurt my feelings at all. seriously

Posted by: Macaca Johnson | May 29, 2007 9:20 PM

Anyone, anyone? Cards or Bills?

Posted by: TDaeg623 | May 29, 2007 9:23 PM

Comcast double talk...it's all about siphoning more cash from subscribers.

If what they said was true they would then reduce the rates for regular digital cable. Don't hold your breath.

I had digital cable about 5 years ago and pulled the plug on it and asked to get just basic cable channels. A few years later, I find out that they have a product called Basic Cable, which is not the minimum service level at all.

We now have sub-basic cable, whatever that is, which here in the PDX is less than 20 per month.

Posted by: Stumped | May 29, 2007 9:25 PM

I'd go for the Cards, they're suppose to have a team on the rise. There is something to be said for the climate too.

Actually, while I'm a lifelong Redskins fan I've only seen two games in person (one against the Cardinals at RFK as the Glory Days began to fade...and since the Skins lost to the Cardinals, clearly they were fading fast) the other game was in Phoenix (because you can get tickets and cheap airfare). They lost that one too (alas).

Posted by: Stumped | May 29, 2007 9:33 PM

If any of you subscribe to comcast and have other cable alternatives like Verizon Fios, give comcast a call. Tell them you are thinking about cancelling their service because the rates are too high. They may hook you up. I got 30 bucks off my monthly bill for the next year doing that and heard of others doing the same thing. But yeah Comcast pretty much sucks.

Posted by: cdubb | May 29, 2007 9:41 PM

Do yourself a favor and get Directv you will not regret it. I dumped Comcast this past year and haven't looked back.

Justme,

I'm fed up with Comcast as well. Have not received my notice yet but I expect it any day.

Not only that but my service was out last night from 6:00 pm until ?. Not sure what time it was restored since I finally gave up and went to bed at 11:30. Every time I called a recorded message said the technicians were working on the problem. Yeah right! Had to miss the Spurs/Jazz game.

Keep track of when your cable is out. Then call and complain and ask for them to refund the prorated amount of the outage. I did it a couple of times with my Internet with them, both in the DC area and now in NM. They never even argued. Then again, it was out for days and I called every day to complain...

Def. the Bills dude. Cuz like u said, '92 was a good year for me as a 7th grader too.

Speaking of good games....anyone remember a few years back when the Cowgirls came to town, and we hadn't beaten them in something like 5 years?....and we won a fairly close game. And LaVar was bad ass? Thats the last game we won that I got to go to....ah...sweet clubs seats....we were living the dream....sigh...

I must say, you guys have really been blogging your guts out and I'm proud. We'll get out of this lull. First we have to examine where we are and figure out where we want to be. When you figure out where to go then you figure out how to get there. So we need to figure out where we are, where do we want to go, and how do we get there. That way we can get to where we want to be.

Is anyone else alarmed by Captain Chaos or Pan-Hands Llyod choice of practice attire?

Posted by: JonTP007 | May 30, 2007 9:40 AM

chamiquealer, so is this cross-naming thing just for role-play and innuendo? Underwhelmed by the single entendre.

Jon, I'm trying to be optimistic about Lloyd (or if not glass-half-full, at least glass-at-half-capacity). I'm much more troubled by the size of Jasno's tie knot and plaid shorts than I am by Lloydwear. At least its an improvement over last preseason's tights (which immediately became unfashionable when Jimmy Farris tried to copy Lloyd).

Posted by: dcsween | May 30, 2007 9:47 AM

I'll go on record as one who does not agree with short-shorts on men. If you look closely at Cooley, you'll notice he's rocking a polo shirt under his jersey with the collar popped. That's not even to mention the Adam Morrison like growth on his upper lip.

Posted by: JonTP007 | May 30, 2007 9:53 AM

The other thing that strikes me about those OTA photos is the size of Lloyd's quads (#19), esp. in comparison to Todd Collin's bird legs (#18). The caption on the last photo (#34) says H.B. Blades is working on this "technique". From that photo, what technique? Assisting a cow in delivering a calf?

Posted by: dcsween | May 30, 2007 9:56 AM

speaking of tights...what's up with little kids wearing underarmor stuff? kids=under teen. they look ridiculous. where are the parents?

should i post that under "onBalance"? it'll be like stoking a beehive...

chamique, I'm just goofin on ya, no offense. I know it has to be a hard for a woman to post on a sports blog.

justme, lisa, et all, yep! comcast sucks! i pay $150+ a month. all i have is internets and hbo with them. but i will NEVER EVER go to dish. been there done that. i paid them $199 out of my pocket to get out of the contract.

Here's why i said no:

1. No OnDemand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. $300 up front for an HD DVR.
3. Bad Weather=loss of signal (football is played in bad weather...sometime)
4. Ugly Dishes
5. No OnDemand!

btw, i didn't know nfl network was offered by comcast. do they offer Oxygen as well?
i kinda miss my girl Oprah (after show).

also verizon is THE WORST in customer service. so i'm hesitant to go to fios.

chamique, if you can't tell, i'm trying to pick a blog fight, like chris Larry vs. jm220 (of course, i pick a blog fight with a woman ... er ... identity).

Oxygen? Oprah? This is a SPORTS blog, so no more "women's issues" (e.g., inability to parallel park, hard time getting credit, not having a THING to wear, etc.).

PSF, the Grilliams' pic does indicate a slight decrease in the moob area, seems like his ankles are swelling. Maybe he should rest for a while, put his feet up, and have someone fetch him his linament.

Is it ok to call you 'my favorite transgender cabbie'?

Posted by: cload and daggar | May 30, 2007 10:18 AM

chamique, bold move on jumping from the dish. I've been equally frustrated by Directv, with no On Demand, and the unacceptable delay in providing more HD channels.

Like a sucker, I bought into the whole spiel. $300 somoleons for the upgrade receiver, only to find about 6 channels in HD. Worst yet, I could not watch the Skins in HD, because Directv told me there were contractual difficulties in getting HD from the local affiliates, which of course cost an extra $5 every month.

I'm stuck with all these receivers, special Tivo box, as well. At least the NFL Network is free.

Bucky Brooks, si.com, showing some love for Cooley ...

"Washington's Chris Cooley is the perfect example of the modern H-back. He has the speed and athleticism to be a major threat in the passing game, but is also powerful enough to be an effective lead blocker on running plays. He allows the to present several different looks out of their base personnel group."

Posted by: dcsween | May 30, 2007 10:25 AM

Not that we want to think about how things could be worse or as bad as last season, but I can think of two players -- either of whom, if injured, would be REALLY bad for the Skins. First, Jason Campbell. Second, Chris Cooley. The Skins were eventually able to muddle around the loss of Portis to injury. They need to find one of these new guys to step up and be the Duckett we never had just in case (i.e., to fill in for Betts if Betts needs to fill in for Portis). Having Santana out due to injury also is very tough, but hopefully the "year two" of the Saunders700 means we can expect more from the WRs are a corps instead of individuals. If Campbell goes down due to injury, well, I don't even want to speculate how bad that would be. Same with Cooley, mostly b/c of the misdirection opportunities he has learned to create (not to mention his actual skill set). For better or worse, Yoder is the ONLY spare TE with a second year in the Saunders700.

listen you guys. you better start watching oprah. cuz that's where your women get their info from. oprah makes them go "aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!". and you gotta watchout for these lightbulb moments.

seriously. no joke. it's all about being proactive. i can see a fight coming 24 hours ahead of time now.

and sometimes i miss an episode...and i get blindsided. i don't say nothing. i just keep my mouth shut. then i go back and watch my missed oprah and THEN i start my comeback.

EVEN if your woman don't watch oprah she knows someone who does. and let me tell you...these women talk.

Posted by: chamique | May 30, 2007 11:11 AM

k, the only thing dish has is a better (in tivo) dvr software. i'm a former adelphia customer so i'm hoping comcast has a better dvr software than what i have. there was even talks of comcast getting tivo software.

but these days, as busy as we are and no time to program stuff and all the movies available on demand. it was a no brainer. also onDemand saves me money on these movie subscription services like netFlix as well.

Posted by: chamique | May 30, 2007 11:15 AM

Dealer, you a smart one. I learned this curve a while back and have been doing good ever since-- try incorporating some Dr. Phil in there too, that works wonders.

As for comcast, we get that on a limited basis in Indiana, but the WORST part of having digital cable (notwithstanding the lousy service and outages from time to time) is its incessant self-marketing. If I hear another jingle I'm going to shoot myself.

P.S.- I'm leaning towards Redskins-Cardinals. Any Redskins Insiders gonna tailgate/ meet up? We could all wear plaid shorts to be recognizable in a crowd.

Posted by: TDawg623 | May 30, 2007 11:17 AM

Oh yeah, and OnDemand isn't all its cracked up to be. Most of the time that I get something it is full of blips, bloops, and black screens, rather than a solid viewing experience.

Posted by: TDawg623 | May 30, 2007 11:18 AM

And now we know what dealer's internal monologue is... a lot more detailed, and a lot more refined than sean taylor's.

But I'm kind of attached to "POW!"...

I know its been said before, but I'd LOVED to have him miked up for a game. They probably have to run it on HBO.

Posted by: TDawg623 | May 30, 2007 11:25 AM

Been outta town recently, but I would like to chime in on Comcast Versus the Dish.

I moved and needed to get the Sunday Ticket to see my beloved skins. So I got the Dish just for Sunday Ticket. I paid the $265 dollars to get the subscription. THe first two weeks were great, saw every game in HD, except for the two or so a week that CBS did not have a HD camera THERE??!! (Obligatory WTF).

So after the second week, the HD Sunday Ticket does not work. Called, biutched and moaned and after 3 hours I got the reason. HD upgrade of Sunday Ticket is an extra $99. That was just a promotion for the first tow weeks.

So they relented and gave me a $120 credit for the year as well as the HD upgrade. So an extra 21 dollars. But they could not take that away from the subscription, so they just lessened my account $10 a month.

Which was fine. The only problem is the same problem I had like K squared. Being that Baltimore is #1 in the area, usually you cant see Skins games. But i moved far enough away where that restriction is lifted... so I got every game on regular TV, but alas, there were not local HD channels yet, again like k squared.

But the kicker is that those games broadcast locally are blacked out on Sunday Ticket. But I found a wierd loophole where they were still available on HD Sunday Ticket, I assume because they were not available in HD locally.

So now I have the local channels in HD, FINALLY, so I cancelled the sunday ticket and will get to see the Skins play every week except possibly two games, when the Ravens host an NFC team and that game is on Fox the same time as the skins.

I dropped Comcast after they offered to send someone out to fix my cable in a week. I told them they could come out and pick up their cable box if it was going to take a week. Directv does have issues during major storms, but I put a cheap Radio Shack antenna on the roof (the best HD antenna there is) as a backup and have never missed anything I wanted to watch as a result.

The Comcast tech was stunned when I handed him the box at the door. They've never really made any attempt to rectify the situation.

Dish Network has qiute a few HD channels which is $20 per month. Right now I get 31 or so HD channels w/o locals in HD which I use an antenna for. For those of you who live in bigger cities, they most likely have locals in HD, but you can find out for sure on their website. I just wish that DirecTV didn't have a strangle hold on the Sunday Ticket. I have had Dish Network and DirecTV and DTV was interrupted during rain and stuff where Dish Network is hardly ever affected. Being in TN I usually can't get any other games but the nationally televised games. On all the others I have to sit by a computer or listen on Sirius. There is my 2 cents on the TV stuff. Anyone know a way I can pick up more skins games from TN?

We don't have a teevee at home, as part of a quixotic plan to grow children who aren't ready-made media addicts awash in brand recognition, so as cload noted, each game day I invest in accommodations at a friendly sports bar in the PDX.

With a little one due in November I am probably going to miss a bunch of games, which will qualify as a worthy tradeoff.

Cooley dosen't play H-Back any more since we converted to Saunders offense last year. He plays as a normal TE now and we use Sellers as the primary blocking/full back.

Crazy........

Posted by: 4th Floor | May 30, 2007 12:40 PM

JustMe,

Comcast hasn't offered you the $129 per month deal for cable, phone and internet for two years (two year commitment)? If you want more premium channels it's $159 a month for two years. I live in PG and took ComCast up on the offer but cancelled when the service guy failed to show up to switch my phone during the three hour window they provided and no one called to let me know what was going on.
My parents switched to Verizon. I'm waiting to hear their her review before I make the switch.

Posted by: LH | May 30, 2007 12:43 PM

Oooo.

Rocky - What part of TN do you live in. if you are close to the eastern part, it may be possible to get a really huge HD antenna to put on your roof pointing to DC and you maybe, (i repeat)maybe be able to get their games over the air. Those anteannas run generally from $150 - $200. My antenna (since I'm in the area) only cost me $15 Bucks since I am local (Landover/Palm Park)

I'll look up this website real quick that may help!

Posted by: 4th | May 30, 2007 12:45 PM

4th.....yep, defintely live in the area.

Sorry, I missed your info. last time, but would love some knowledge....thanks.

My biggest gripe is not getting local channels in HD, despite the schwanky disclaimer: proudly broadcasting in HD.

Posted by: k Squared | May 30, 2007 12:48 PM

Sup LH?

While dropping my kids off this morning I noticed a bunch of Verizon folks working on the phone lines (so I thought). So I stopped by and asked the guy (the question I have been asking for a year now) "When are we getting FIOs?!?!?!?

He told me that's what their working on and it'll take a month to be up and running. I gave them my # and address so they can call me when it's up and running.

Does anyone else have FIOs and can you comment on what you think about it?? (TV, PHone, AND Cable). Thanks.

Posted by: 4th | May 30, 2007 12:50 PM

I know this is Dolphins news, but I heart Cleo Lemon!!! How can you not like a player named Cleo Lemon?

DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- The Miami Dolphins have re-signed quarterback Cleo Lemon to a one-year contract.
Lemon agreed to the $1.3 million deal Tuesday. He's entering his fourth season and third with the Dolphins, for whom he started last year's finale at Indianapolis.
Lemon has completed 38 of 68 passes for 929 yards and two touchdowns in his NFL career.

Posted by: Cindy | May 30, 2007 12:53 PM

One of our columnists has FIOS and loves it. Or he did until the gardner cut the cable....

Posted by: Cindy | May 30, 2007 12:56 PM

4th,
I was just talking to my mom about FIOS. She's had it for a little over a week. She likes having everything on one bill - $99 for phone, cable and internet for two years. She has all premium channels except Cinemax. We have FIOS in my area of Upper Marlboro. I may have to give 'em a call.

Posted by: LH | May 30, 2007 12:58 PM

All you haev to do is go to Wal MArt/Best Buy/CC/etc and get an antenna that says on the box itself that it broadcast TV in HD, or something close to it. If you are not in a wooded area or live where the buildings are super tall you can just buy the one of the cheaper ones ($20 or under) and hook it up to your HD tv as you would have any TV pre HD tv and Pre cable years (if you still remember those days :-)).

Then, I don't know if you have to, but I think you would need to reset your channels. When I do a search on my tv for channels it asks me if I want to search for analog, digital, or both. If you have this option, choose both (HD are digital channels). Then, you should be set.

Ch. 4 in HD = 4-1 (On my remote I literally press 4,-(dash),1.

Ch. 5 in HD = 5-1

Ch 2 (BMORE ABC) = 2-1

Ch 9 = 9-1

Ch 7 = 7-1

TNT = 127-5

Versus = 132-3 (I think)

PBS is somewhere in the 20s

Ch 13 = 13-1

Ch 50 = 50-1

Once you do it, you basically would want to search channel by channel (pressing up or down without skipping channels) to see what else you can get digtally. Also, just because the channel is in HD dosen't mean the programming is since not all programs are not filmed in HD, yet.

Make sense?

Posted by: 4th | May 30, 2007 1:02 PM

4th: I live in Northeast Tennessee prolly 10-20 miles from the TN-VA line. I live near Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN. The antenna I have now is just a cheap indoor one. If I try a bigger antena, hopefully I could take it back if it didn't work. I don't know of any bars or places that show the games b/c this is kinda Cowboy country b/c Witten went to high school around here. Anyway, thanks for the idea!!

Posted by: RockyTopSkin | May 30, 2007 1:03 PM

as part of a quixotic plan to grow children who aren't ready-made media addicts awash in brand recognition

nate, then you better cut off those internets. kids don't watch tv anymore.
they get all you fear from computers.

on a sader note...i just checked verizon's web site and i don't have fios. :(

but can someone tell me how is it that verizon can deliver cable tv when i thought the cable companies had a monopoly?
and how's the HD on fios?

Posted by: dealer | May 30, 2007 1:10 PM

So Cleo Lemon is on the brink of joining the list of 1,000 yard career passers. Hmmm. How long is that list?

I got FIOS internet this winter -- a huge upgrade over satellite internet, very reliable, faster than my connection at work. I have DirecTV non-HD, but haven't tried to switch -- I have DirecTivo receivers, and since the full power and functionality of the D*Tivo cannot be replicated [were Ben Franklin alive today, he would claim that D*Tivo, like beer, was proof that god loves us and wants us to be happy], I won't be switching to FIOS TV anytime soon.
I haven't had any difficulty with DirecTV reception. The only times the weather interfered was when the storm was so strong that you don't want the TV on...

Posted by: cload and daggar | May 30, 2007 1:12 PM

RokyTopSkin and K Sqrd - This is a good website for you guys to look at (and anyone else thinking of buying an HD TV or if you have one and didn't know about the atenna thing):

http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx

Rocky - I would think you could buy it, try it out that night and if it dosen't work, repackage it and return it the next day or so. I would check with the store before you do though. Good Luck!

Thanks LH and Cindy! I will def be a FIOS customer one month from now!

Posted by: 4th Floor | May 30, 2007 1:12 PM

Thanks 4th..as my man Denzel said, let me get this straight, tell me again like I'm a 5 year old.

This additional HD capable antenna, for about $20...is simply connected to the back of the HD TV, just like the old days, and I'm good?

Posted by: k Squared | May 30, 2007 1:14 PM

C&D - You had a T1 connection before FIOS internet?

Posted by: 4th | May 30, 2007 1:15 PM

You will be good my brotha from anotha motha......

I paid $15 for my antenna.

If you don't believe me just click on the website above I gave you. It is the reason I am a genius at answering this question. Seriously!

Posted by: 4th | May 30, 2007 1:18 PM

I have DirecTv, but it would be much more convenient to have everything in one bundle. Love the bundle!

Posted by: Cindy | May 30, 2007 1:20 PM

4th -- no, satellite -- used to be Direcway, now HughesNet. Bandwidth was not too bad, but since you're sending the signal 44,000 miles to/from the satellite, there's a built-in latency of 500ms or so that is -- as the man says -- "a fundamental law of physics".
Better than dialup, but cable/dsl/FIOS are all much better alternatives.

Posted by: cload and daggar | May 30, 2007 1:20 PM

dealer -- Verizon has to go to your local/county/whoever controls the cable franchise and ask to be allowed to serve your area.
they usually do this before starting to build out fiber in your area, so the rule of thumb is that if you see the trucks in your neighborhood, you're 3-6 months from being able to place your order.

Posted by: cload and daggar | May 30, 2007 1:23 PM

4th...again, thanks for the knowledge and link. Mrs. k Squared doesn't know it yet, but something is about to get bumped off the honey do list this weekend.

Posted by: k Squared | May 30, 2007 1:25 PM

Cindy -- I know that Verizon had a deal pre-FIOS that included phone, DSL, and DirecTV on a single bill; I don't know if you saved any real money, but you only had one bill to pay (I think it is part of their plan to target you for FIOS eventually).

Posted by: cload and daggar | May 30, 2007 1:28 PM

Thanks, Cload. I may check that out.

A blog post saying there is nothing to post about is lame.

Let us know when there's actual news.

Posted by: Kim | May 30, 2007 1:38 PM

Kim - HAve you not been reading the last 2 hours worth of post? Plenty of news buddy. Just not about the blog's main topic (that shall not be named).......

Posted by: 4th | May 30, 2007 1:40 PM

Whenever I hear Cleo mentioned it reminds me of the old Meat Loaf song, "my life's a lemon and I want my money back".

Still the fact that we've re-signed "2 TD's Cleo" should strike fear into that fragile Skins D. :) Wow, what a choice I have this year as a Fins fan; one-legged Daunte, Cleo or "not her eyet" Trent Green.....

Posted by: Redcoat | May 30, 2007 1:41 PM

Longtime poster, first time lurker. Hey, thanks Kim. Of course, we could go one step further and say it's lame to post that posting nothing is lame, but then it would just go on all day, and that would get really tiresome. But thanks for helping Nate's quest for 100K. Now, I'm back to work and lurking for the rest of the day.

Posted by: 4-12 | May 30, 2007 1:43 PM

4-12, its lame to post about how its lame to post about how its lame to post about nothing.

Kim, in THIS post, this guy gets hit by a car and the Judge orders the driver to be the guy's butler. There. Something?

As an antenna guy myself, I was too embarrased to participate. [DSL from Verizon, and phone service through Vonage.] NOW, thanks to the knowledge dropped by 4th floor, I am BACK IN BUSINESS. I'm rushing out to get a directional device. I can already get the DC and Balto stations (3 public television stations ... that's a lot of telethons). Now I'm gunning to get beach reports -- broadcast from the beach.

As long as Jasno doesn't wear socks and sandals, it's all good.

On DirecTV...been a subscriber for 11 years. I'm what they call an "A-1" customer. Any time I have a problem, they send someone out lickety split. No questions asked. You would have to pry my DirecTV from my cold, dead hands.

The new DirecTV HD DVR is okay...there were lots and lots of problems early on, but they seem to have vanished.

Programming-wise, they're behind cable on HD channels, but that should change this fall. The parent company that owns Starz! now owns DirecTV, so they are introducing all HD for the Starz! networks. You can also expect a few other HD channels. Strangely enough, there is no NFL Network HD on DirecTV yet. Hopefully that will change this fall. (though, I should add that they broadcasted all major NFL Network events such as games, the Combine, etc in HD on the "special" channel 95)...

How are things here in blog-land? I've been super-busy getting my next startup up and running, so haven't had much time to come back and post. Hopefully we can get out of the funding process unscathed...

ohhmy! look at all them sistas up here! i think we out numbering the boys on this thread!

nate, it's cool (not that you were looking for an affirmation or anything). i watched very little teevee until i was 13. and we try not to let the older one watch. as much. but i do fear the internets more than i fear the teevee. imagine freddie crougar jumping out of tv screen and grabing you in your living room. that's how i feel about internets.

i like cleo too. reminds me of the fortune teller. and the movie spotless mind sunshine jim kate

I had Comcast (TV & internet) and switched to DirecTV. When I called to cancel, I asked them if I could keep the modem for a couple months in case I changed my mind and wanted to switch back. They said it was a good idea to keep it just in case. Two months later, I get mail from a collection agency saying that I owe them $50 because I refused to return the modem. I took the modem to them immediately and thankfully no more letters. I just think that was in bad taste to do that.

Overall, I'm much happier with the dish than cable because I don't lose my reception every time somebody hits a utility pole. The only time I lost dish reception was during a snow last year. I just wiped the snow off the dish and everything was back to normal within a few minites.

So should my daughter be watching my son play Smackdown vs. Raw on the PS3? Everytime someone gets slammed she goes 'ooooohhhhhhhhhhh'. She came with us a few months ago when I took my soon to see Raw ate the Verizon Center a couple of months back, too.

I know the answer to this, but now I feel bad after reading a few of you non-tv watcher's post (well only one, but that's enough to make this father feel bad for the exposure I am giving)......

Posted by: 4th Floor | May 30, 2007 2:06 PM

4-12, I'm a folklorist and grad student (so take this with a grain of salt), but I just took a children's folklore class, which covered child psychology and we had a long talk about the TV debate.

In short, the research shows that less TV produces generally higher individual creativity in children, but also sometimes limits their social abilities. On the other hand, television in moderation (less than 7 hours a week) shows to improve cognition and all of that other good stuff.

As a product of the Mr. Rogers age and Sesame Street, I'd say that watching that is completely okay. We all need a little Fred Rogers in our lives.

Posted by: TDawg623 | May 30, 2007 2:10 PM

I am convinced that professional wrestling (when viewed as a child) helped to make me who I am today.

Plus, Hulk Hogan's threats of violence against me for not taking vitamins and drinking milk contributed to my tall stature, I'm sure... because I took them out of fear.

Posted by: TDawg623 | May 30, 2007 2:13 PM

Good stuff TDawg. I also grew up with the Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers, and think I turned out ok. (Other than for my fear of mean green animals in trash cans, and my bad taste in sweaters.)

I see another TV commercial coming, with some movie outtake (name the dead scene) dubbed to look like the actor is talking about DirecTV.

Hey dealer,

I actually love the surface computer. It's a good first effort. I'm a huge fan of multi-touch interfaces (see, iPhone)...

In any event, I'm retiring from this gig in September, hopefully with my startup ready to go before then. I already own 2 Macs, and I'm happier than a pig in shti.

From the previous post:

dealer/chamique,
what would be the point about writing a story about a girl who is being oggled over the internets because of her looks without letting readers see what the fuss is about. How does it hurt her? She's all over the Net already. Plus, her name is in the article so a simple google search would lead the reader to a picture anyway. By using her photo, non-perv curiosity seekers didn't have to add to the views or hits of the various sites where her pictures are posted.
I feel for her dad because I know he'd like to kick that sports blogger's azz but as an officer of the court he can't do so without risking the loss of his license.

Posted by: LH | May 30, 2007 2:29 PM

lh, i figured that out on the way home. especially that blog picture. because you have to see it to know, as you say what the fuss is about.

yep, as a father of a daughter i hear you. i really wouldn't know what to do if that happened to one of mine.

4-12, re: teevee. we followed a very simple rule. no teevee until the age of 2. as there've been number of studies, and personal observations that suggest a link to ADD and starting watching teevee when they're under 2.

we love our teevee. so it would've been very hard for us to have them stay off teevee for too long. we've found that now she doesn't like it as much as she likes playing. unlike other kids who started watching from day 1. of course there's nothing scientific about this conclusion, just a personal observation.

we're trying very hard to not let the younger one watch (now 6 months) but it's more difficult with her than it was with only the first one.

honestly i really don't care about what they watch/content. it's the amount of time they spend infront of tv that worries me. so we try to control that as much as possible. most of the time limiting her to 1 hour a day.

Posted by: dealer | May 30, 2007 2:49 PM

yep, i love sesame and rogers too. i can't stand the new stuff (wiggles, doodlebops...). ohh and she likes dora and diego. also as a minority i think it's important for her to watch non-white shows where the leading character(in a leader role) isn't white. and have non-white dolls...to HELP prevent any insecurities that she may have later on...

Posted by: dealer | May 30, 2007 2:57 PM

Sorry, chamique, but I think this place will always be dominated by the harrier gender. Not that I would mind more sistahs.

Maybe I could come up with female persona just to hone my narrative voice?

Posted by: Larry Bud | May 30, 2007 2:57 PM

my 3 yr old boy really likes Dora and pretends to BE Dora sometimes. Should I be worried that he'll grow up to be a trans-ethnic? You know, a white kid that thinks he's Puerto Rican?

Posted by: Larry Bud | May 30, 2007 3:01 PM

Spot on Dealer. We had grandiose plans to stress non tv activities with baby 1. Yet by the time baby 3 arrived, it was plop 'em down in front of Nick or NOG when you want a brief respite.

But as you said, it's not so much what they are watching, cause if you limit it, they will be happy with Animal Planet, but the quantity of viewing. Less really is more.

When all else fails, and/or the satellite goes down, we head to the basement. I don my Priest Holmes jersey, my 3 boys (8,6,3)put on their #21 Taylor jerseys', and take turns flying off the furniture, clothesline style as I try to get out of bounds.

They love the Reaper!

4-12, mrs dr dcsween says the American Academy of Pediatricians last year revised their TV recommendation to NO TV until after year 2 (for the same reasons intuited by dealique, esp. ADD).

dealer, I hear ya on the implicit acculturation of TV programming ruining kids to be solid humans. That said, my personal fave (which I enjoy perhaps more than my daughters) is Backyardigans. My older knows the Dora 'formula' so well, she started to make up her own maps and story lines. She has since given that up.

On a related note, I would love to see Swiper on the Jumbo-Tron after someone in the Skins secondary (finally) makes an interception ("you're toooo late!").

Me, my 17 month old daughter, and 7 yr old son watch about an hour of Saved by the Bell each morning while we are getting dressed and I'm preparing their lunch meals for the day. Is that sooo bad?

Also, we play music videos sometimes and sing and dance and clap to it. Is that sooo bad?

What about that new kids video that's made for children as young as 1 and 1/2 years old? I forget the name off hand.

I think all of this is relative to what the child encounters overall. Example - They may not watch TV, but they see their parents fight and/or argue all of the time........

4th, again it's not the content (especially at that age) it's the amount. because at that age they really can't comprehend what's going on. it's the way their brain is spoonfed the information (via film) that is so bad for the brain at that age.

re: the parents fighting...i think my girl oprah had something on her show about this...she said or one of her frriends said that it's important for the kids to see you argue (non-violent fighting) so that kids know that it's not always happy-go-lucky. but of course if you're fighting all the time you might as well end it...cuz you're setting a bad example that way too.

oprah doc also says: "your kids will treat themselves the way YOU treat yourself and NOT the way you treat THEM."

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | May 30, 2007 4:06 PM

Yes, yes, Mr. Holdsclaw, it's the passive nature of the medium which is a big part of the problem. Sitting on your duff absorbing sights and sounds from that window frame. Yeah, I love it, and I know my kid(s) will love it someday, just want to delay the inevitable addiction.

The other big bugaboo is the pervasive branding which is everywhere on the teevee, it's not always obvious but it's everywhere -- even in the most inocuous shows -- and it's all intended to make even the tiniest of tots into obedient little brand-aware consumers.

Okay, that was soapboxy.

dealer, hadn't occurred to me to have ANOTHER reason not to like Wonder Pets. Good point. WP came off our netflix queue after my older one replied to a reasonable question of mine with "duh". She picked that up from Wonder Pets. We try to avoid cartoons/shows where characters aren't kind to each other. They'll get enough of that later. For me, I also love Spongebob, but won't let my kids watch it b/c its toooooo frenetic. Visual espresso. I do, however, love Spongebob's optimism.

According to Foxsports:

The NFL may be the most successful league in the country, but that doesn't mean it's without competition.

Bill Hambrecht, a Wall Street businessman, and Tim Armstrong, a senior executive at Google, have decided to start up a rival football league, the United Football League, according to a report on the New York Times web site Wednesday.
For those worried that the UFL will lack name recognition, Hambrecht and Armstrong already have one owner lined up: Mark Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

And though the league is having a difficult time finding other owners, it appears Cuban is committed to the plan. The league intends to play its first preseason games in August of 2008.

And where will the league find the talent necessary to attract fans?

"(Former NFL coach) Bill Walsh used to tell me that the last 20 players cut from every team were almost interchangeable with the last 20 players to make the team," Hambrecht says.

So far, the UFL has decided to put teams in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Mexico City. Cuban, unsurprisingly, is considering buying the team in Vegas, according to the report.

Did I mention that FiOS has On Demand as well....

Ahhhh, On Demand and NFL Network HD and Discovery HD. Ahhhhh.....

Is the Deadlist Catch in HD? What about Man vs. Wild? Did anyone see the Guy eat a dead Zebra after the Lions and Vultures devoured it. That was awsome!!
