Guttentag From Hamburg

Finally getting a chance to do a proper blog on my conversation with Casey Bramlet yesterday. As we have talked about, he is tearing up NFL Europa, and hopes to get back in the NFL this season (he was with Cincy in 2004 but has been a nomad since).

Bramlet, 26, was in camp with the Skins last year, but the Redskins already had two veterans who were locks to be on the roster - Collins and Brunell - to go with blue-chip prospect Jason Campbell, so there was no real shot of making the team in any capacity. But this season there is a good chance that Collins could be let go if Brunell shows he is fully recovered from labrum surgery, and the chance to start grooming a young backup QB is there.

Also, Brunell is a great mentor to younger QBs - ask Campbell or Leftwich or Ramsey - and Brunell and Bramlet share the same agent. A season of guidance as an understudy for any of the Skins young passers - rookies Sam Hollenbach or Jordan Palmer - wouldn't be a bad thing for any of them.

So, should Casey's team in Hamburg make the World Bowl, they would play through this month. He is set to report to training camp in July, and while it is always a little gamble to be out of sight during the off season, Casey thought the chance to get some regular snaps in Europe as a starting QB was the best thing to do to prepare for a chance to win the third job in Washington.

Given the way he has played - he leads Europa is almost every passing category - it looks like a wise choice.

"I knew I had a chance to be successful if I came over here, and I just wanted to make the most of the opportunity," Brmalet said over the phone from Hamburg after his practice Thursday afternoon. "After I came over the last time (2005) I felt like I got better as a leader and as a quarterback, and there are so many things that go into this position that you just can't duplicate unless you are actually playing games - leading the huddle, knowing the playbook, the timing of the game - and that's what makes it so great having the chance to play over here."

Bramlet, a Wyoming kid who went to the U of Wyoming, said he got a good grasp of Al Saunders's complex rhythm offense during camp last year, and believes he had a jump start on that 700-page monster playbook already. "It's actually pretty similar to what we were running when I was in Cincinnati ," Casey said. "It's definitely a big playbook, but I was familiar with the concepts, so it wasn't a big change for me."

When the Redskins cut Bramlet last summer they let him know there was a good chance they would bring him back next off season, but, alas, there was no keeping the playbook for winter study. He had to turn it in like everyone else. Bramlet did spend time studying his notes and plays he jotted down during QB meetings while with the Redskins, though, to get ready for his next shot, but otherwise there is only so much a young QB in his position can do.

Yeah, you can throw routes to the neighborhood kids and workout in the gym, but there is no substitute for game action. For Casey that was especially important, because the last time he got any sort of steady repetition of snaps at the position in a pro setting prior to being with Hamburg was back in 2005 camp with the Bengals, when he was cut. (he was also with Hamburg Sea Devils in 2005, his other NFL Europe stint)

Last year as the 4th QB in Skins camp of a team learning a new offense, he was on a very limited rotation.

"There's definitely something to be gained by taking mental reps and watching from the sidelines, but I needed to play again," he said. "If I wanted to go really go forward with my career I had to get reps ."

Now he hopes to get back into the NFL. He sees a real chance to make the Redskins if he continues to perform as he has been in Europe during the preseason, and being the third QB is his goal.

"That's what I am going for," Bramlet said. "I know I am not competing for the starting job or the backup job, and I just want to find a way to make the team. I'm ready to come to Washington and try to take over there where I left off over here."

In the meantime, it is not all work for Casey in Europe. His fiancee visited recently and they took a short trip to Prague, driving from Hmaburg. "What a beautiful city," he said. "It was a amazing." Bramlet's younger brother is also a QB in Europa, so that's pretty cool to have a family member experiences the same thing this spring as well.

I have chatted with a lot of NFL Europe vets over the years, and a lot of them seem to have failed to embrace the cultural opportunities available there, but Casey said he is hitting museums and historic monuments every chance he gets. "I'm trying to see all that Germany has to offer," he said.

Of course, you all know I couldn't let this interview pass without talking a little soccer with someone living in Europe. Casey has seen Hamburg SV (the local Bundesliga team who share AOL Arena with Casey''s team), and was blown away by the experience of watching top flight European soccer live. "The crowd is just amazing; I've never seen anything like it," Casey said. "They cheer through the entire game and chant. It's a pretty unbelievable environment." (The AOL is pretty cool from what I remember of it from the World Cup last summer. Kinda standard fare, and not as cool as the Stads in Berlin or Leipzig - which dripped with history - or Munich, which is as state-of-the-art as it gets, but not bad nonetheless. (Stuttgart was the only real stinker from all of the venues as I remember it, but after covering like 22 games over there you tend to get confused looking back. Can you tell I am getting pretty nostalgic for my German Summer of '06? )

And believe it or not, the Germans have truly embraced American football as well. Casey said a crowd of over 30,000 was expected for Hamburg's game this weekend.

So, anyone have an research on what it means to be "leading in almost every passing category in NFL Europe"? How does that translate into NFL success? Have other QB's lead the way in NFL Europe and then come over here and kicked butt?

Posted by: kjh | June 8, 2007 3:26 PM

it just gets better.

LOS ANGELES -- Paris Hilton was taken from a courtroom screaming and crying Friday seconds after a judge ordered her returned to jail to serve out her entire 45-day sentence for a parole violation in a reckless driving case.

"It's not right!" shouted the weeping Hilton. "Mom!" she called out to her mother in the audience.

It takes time to build depth, and it's nice to see the team taking the steps to do so. Similar situation with the Caps, but it's nice to see both teams now building through depth. Hopefully our patience will soon be rewarded.

Hell, maybe Bramlet will be some great trade bait in a couple years. I'm all for building players through Europe, nothing like live game experience, especially for third and below stringers that never play.

Posted by: monkalicious | June 8, 2007 3:35 PM

hmmm. Maybe Casey B. can come back and kick Paris' butt.

The media hatred of the Skins is definitely Snyder and Cerratto related. From Dr. Z's column:

A very long, very carefully thought out question from Jonathan of New Orleans, who wishes I would cover the Redskins in a less negative manner, perhaps as I cover the New York teams, which, ahem, I seem to favor. Interesting, your take on my feeling about New York teams. Pat Hanlon, the Giants' very hard working and capable PR man, accused me of leaning way over, in my treatment of the Jets, while hardly showing his Giants the same latitude. Yeah, I guess he's right. But old feelings die hard, and it probably goes back to my stint as the NY Post beat man on the Jets for 11 years, whereas I was always treated as a felon by Timmy Mara when he was directing some of the Giants' operations, and the club fell into line accordingly. But your concern is legitimate, so I'll try to give you my feelings about the Skins.

First of all, I admit that I don't like the owner, (and the feeling is reciprocal) or the GM, Vinny Cerrato, but I don't think I've ever been unfair to any of the players, do you? I was the only one who picked Chris Cooley to an all-pro team (H-Back, FB), and I picked Cornelius Griffin when he wasn't a popular choice, and I didn't stiff Santana Moss, either. I have faith in Gregg Williams and the defense, if people stay healthy. I think Marcus Washington is a big league performer, and I think London Fletcher will fit right into the system. I haven't been high on Sean Taylor because he's one of those players who I feel keeps both sides in the game.

I don't get any feeling of focus from their offense. I don't see traces of the old Joe Gibbs genius. The quality level of the players on that side of the ball is very little above average, with a few exceptions such as Moss and Clinton Portis. Worst of all, I don't like the deals they've made, the free agents they've signed, since the Snyder-Cerrato twosome has been calling things, or supervising, or whatever they do. I don't get a feeling that they have a definite way they want their squad to look, and then find players accordingly, as the Patriots do. And thank you very much for your kind comments about my work.

Can't he, like, Xerox the playbook? Am I missing something?

The Paris Hilton saga is awesome. God, that girl is fantastic amusement.

My favorite part of Dr. Z's column is his ironic take on Sam Mills' chances at getting into the Hall of Fame. After saying that he's been in Mill's corner from day one, Z says Mills' chances of getting in are "Not too good. I don't think people fully realize how much he contributed on every level."

Funny, that's exactly how we feel about Dr. Z not voting for Art Monk.

F Z.

I'm not a big Dr. Z or LenP fan, but you have to give them credit for their longevity on the job. They are, of course, columnists and not beat reporters, so bringing their personal biases to their work is within reason. But still, I'm not a big fan of their vitriol and negativity.

That said, as much as I respect "Mr." Snyder, I wish he would just sell the team and go ride rollercoasters and eat cotton candy for a living.

Posted by: Redcoat | June 8, 2007 4:09 PM

It's like an old-timers reunion here on the RI blog. I'm getting a bit weepy . . .

Posted by: stevie in gp | June 8, 2007 4:10 PM

kjh, the success story that inspires every almost-NFL player to try at NFL Europe is Kurt Warner, and that was about a million years ago.

Objectively, Bramlett looks like he has a better shot at #3 than draft pick, Jordan Palmer. The thing Palmer has in his favor is that he was a draft pick (which on SOME teams has value to the team). Bramlett seems better positioned that Collins based on real-time game experience alone (and I don't feel enough love for Hollenbach from Terps fans here to do more than hope that the Skins ultimately keep the best 3 guys).

Still, it seems like (near) game speed playing experience in NFL Europa at LEAST gets you game film (for study, as well as personal marketing), but also seems like the way to improve your skills. This is why I think Lefotu has a good shot at the last roster spot at depth on the O-line (that and the fact that the Skins spent a draft pick on him). It would be great if another 7th round QB (other than Tom Brady) could have some real success in the NFL in this day and age.

If it's any help, Drew Henson looked pretty good in NFL Europe.

Posted by: SMACK | June 8, 2007 4:15 PM

The rumor mill at pft.com posted an open letter from the Falcons' owner and their GM to season ticket holders, essentially acknowledging that things look bad b/c of the bitey dog matter, but that they can't say anything till everything comes to light and runs its course. The letter does point out some positive things about other players and one particularly stood out in my mind as a really generous gesture from an NFL player: "And, 2004 Walter Payton Man of the Year recipient, Running Back Warrick Dunn has touched the lives of 69 single parents and a collective 181 children, helping them to become first-time homeowners by making down payments on new fully-furnished homes." NFL players, esp. stars, make tons of money, but even for a highly paid player, the down payment on 69 new homes must be a BIG chuck of change. Kudos for Dunn.

Ellis is on the outs in Dallas, it seems. Is our front office paying attention? This guy is a lunch-pailer, and could be a great Gibbs guy.

Unless everyone thinks we are in great shape at end, why don't we go after Ellis?

J-La C, can we stir it up?

Posted by: Ellis Bandwagoneer | June 8, 2007 4:51 PM

Sigh, I guess the prove is in the pudding. That means the record at the end of the year. Otherwise this looks exactly like Joe Jackson Gibbs at work.

Most important position to Gibbs, the offensive mind. The man who groomed QBs such as Doug Williams in TB, Dan Fouts in SD, Theismann, Schroeder, Rypien, and Stan Humpheries. First Brunell to help tutor and mentor Ramsay. Then Campbell. Bramlet, and Palmer. He likes to have as many in the pipeline as the league allows. For good reason.

Good running talent, an experienced and effective offensive line.

Solid special teams.

This time around he did not have Richie Petitbone to manage the defense for him. He allowed Williams to do that and special teams. A bad thing perhsps? Because now he must manage this area of the team due to its recent lack of success.

He has had to manage a difficult owner, a ravenous fan who like to make headlines and likes sexy high priced talent. And likes to be "hands on" intricately involved in every aspect of the team.

Certainly more politics and fewer brilliant half-time adjustments as a result.

Posted by: periculum | June 8, 2007 4:56 PM

Skin Patrol, to be more precise, I should have said drafted by the Skins. [I noted further down he was a 7th rounder.]

Posted by: dcsween | June 8, 2007 4:57 PM

Ahh, I see now. My fault.

Posted by: Skin Patrol | June 8, 2007 4:59 PM

Jake Delhomme, Kurt Warner, and Brad Johnson all played in NFL Europa before coming over and leading their team to the Super Bowl (with Warner and Johnson winning it). If Bramlet gets a shot maybe he can show Gibbs something. Don't knock him for getting game experience and keeping his NFL hopes alive. Bramlet is 1st in TDs, 2nd in yards and passer rating, and has thrown the least picks of starting qbs in Europa. Plus his team is in second place.

Nate, as for the Pace Of That There Everlovin' Race (POTTER), I'd rather not share at this time. Suffice it to say, we have slowed mightily in the last three and a half weeks. I know a lot of it was due to the tremendous amount of negative energy going on up here, and also to the tremendous lack of real "news" going on up here, and also to the tremendous lack of Jasno going on up here, so I'm just trying to sit back and be patient and see what happens. When the time comes, I'm sure we'll all blog our guts out up here and really come through.

Having said that, we're just about to go over 59,000. About 35 to go...

F negative energy!

DCSween,

Warrick Dunn has been doing that deal with buying houses for (single) women and their children since he came into the NFL. More or less, it is a way for him to thank and remember the efforts of his own mother. Do a little Google research and you'll get the entire picture, including a very sad story behind the story.

If I remember correctly, Dunn was also the first announced NFL player to make a sizable cash pledge for relief efforts in NOLA after Katrina, and challenged all other players to match his contribution.

Warrick Dunn definitely has his heart and his head in the right place.

Posted by: Otter | June 8, 2007 5:29 PM

Dunn is an absolute good man- you'd have thought he'd rub off a little on MV, but maybe not. Perhaps brother Marcus was not such the aberration everyone thought.

Great to hear Bramlet is doing well- having been Franchise Qubeless for a long time, glad to hear we have some developing options.

07 QB wish list:

Campbell
Brunell/Collins (1, not both, and I don't care which one)
Bramlet
PS Palmer

08 QB wish list:

Campbell
Bramlet
Palmer

why not???

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | June 9, 2007 6:55 AM

I agree with that list for 07 with the fact that Collins will be taking his slip sooner than we think with Bramlet killing in Europa.

Posted by: dave | June 9, 2007 8:46 AM

I agree, couldn't Bramlet or any player cut from a team just take the playbook to Kinko's and get it copied? I doubt the NFL or Redskins have rules stopping that because it would be hard to enforce.

Anyway, Dr. Z is generally an idiot or moron. **I think he got fired from ESPN way back in the day.*** Anyway, like someone else said on this blog already, he's pretty much on the mark about his latest comments regarding the Skins unfortunately. It disgusts me that "Dr. Z the Idiot" gave me a balanced view for a change.

Posted by: Baller4Life | June 9, 2007 9:59 AM

I don't know that copying your playbook is "illegal" but it's definately unethical. One of those unwritten rules.

Like when I got fired from Burger King last week for getting caught bobbing for french fries. I didn't have to turn in my paper hat, but I did.

Posted by: etrod | June 9, 2007 10:17 AM

How can you not care which one between Collins and Brunell. Can you even make a case for Collins? Brunell is an excellent player/coach, mentor, leader etc. He understands the system, he understands Gibbs, and if Cambell goes down he can atleast run the offense with a power run game and smart passing. Something Collins demonstrated that he could not do last preseason. Brunell is def your #2 guy, unless Bramlett completely shins in camp and then Brunell's experience would still probably win out.

They've only got four games to play with, so they figured they'd better stretch em out. Sorry LeBron, but you were supposed to lose to the Wizards anyway. To think it could have been the Wizards being swept in the Finals, i.e. Washington Capitols.

"Warrick Dunn has been doing that deal with buying houses for (single) women .."

That is a Joe Gibbs player. I wouldn't be surprised if the Duckett deal came about because Gibbs inquired about Dunn. For Gibbs Dunn would be the perfect RB. Talent and tons of character. The perfect Redskin.

Posted by: periculum | June 9, 2007 4:30 PM

New QB coach: Mark Brunell. Campbell, Bramlet, and Palmer. If Collins had shown in camp they wouldn't have drafted Palmer. They have to have a competent backup for Campbell. Today you are lucky when a QB lasts an entire season. I can't think of one in recent years that has lasted an entire season and played every game for the Redskins. That's why Gibbs likes to collect them if he can. Norv looks at the position the same way I think.

Expect Brad Johnson to start for Dallas. Which is why I think the Skins will win both games. In the end I think the Skins will win the QB contest in the NFC east. Eli will be no match for Campbell. Only McNabb will be better. But with his recent history of injuries ... Andy Reid is as good a coach as you could find and he went for QB high in this year's draft. Expect you might see the same next year.

literally ran into james thrash today...both of us were holding infant daughters...he's taller than me and looks like he's in shape...got me thinking how everyone loves this kid and wonder why every player can't have the same mindset as him

"I don't get any feeling of focus from their offense."

Despite the Coryell connection, Gibbs admitted he didn't realize it would be that difficult for the players to absorb the new system. In spite of this, things did start clicking towards the end and if the defense hadn't been dead-last-horrible, they would have won quite a few more games--possibly even made it to the playoffs. Watch this year Zee!

"I don't see traces of the old Joe Gibbs genius."
Dr. Z must've been copping some Z's in 2006 when Coach Gibbs practically willed the team into the playoffs with a five-game winning streak. Offensive genius is not the only factor. (Vince Lombardi, anyone?) Joe Gibbs is also a great uniter of men.

"The quality level of the players on that side of the ball is very little above average, with a few exceptions such as Moss and Clinton Portis..."

He forgot to mention an elite offensive line that made Ladell Betts look like a perennial Pro Bowler.

Posted by: Guy Mandude | June 10, 2007 8:47 AM

Dr. Z is a complete jackass. As long as Wade or someone else can capably fill that guard spot, the only thing the offense is missing is a QB which we may finally have and a 2nd quality WR. He admits bias so of course that will skew his opinion. Hopefully his flaming redhead wife drank too much wine he recommended last night and gave him the John Daly treatment.

Worst QB situations in the NFC:
Minnesota
Washington
Detroit

Posted by: Per Mike Golic | June 10, 2007 11:27 AM

Props to Rags to Riches, who from now on will have to tell guys in bars that she's an actuary.
More details, please, on the SportsCenter discussion....

Posted by: Cindy | June 10, 2007 1:47 PM

Cindy,
Golic said that the Saints have the best Qb situation based just on Brees. Hard to argue with that. Minny is the worst with Tavaris Jackson and no experience. We are second to worst. Said Campbell has potential but if we have to rely on Brunell at all we are in trouble. Detroit was 3rd worst with Kitna and the dude Stanton they just drafted.

Personally I agree with the previous post. Golic is an idiot. Always associated garlic with him. Looks like he would smell like an italian hoagie.

I'd rather have the chance of Campbell being good than being stuck with Grossman or Eli who we know both suck. Or Vick who can only run and may get suspended. The only QB's I would take in the NFC over ours right now would be Brees, McNabb and maybe Bulger. Who knows how Campbell, Leinart, Alex Smith are going to pan out. Its all speculation.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 10, 2007 3:34 PM

Why is everyone clamoring for Mark Brunell to be the quarterback coach here? Not sure I get this at all -- Bill Lazor is, from what I understand, an excellent QB coach.

Posted by: Mike | June 10, 2007 3:41 PM

Brunell will not be the next QB coach for the Redskins. His next job will be as a member of the Joe Gibbs Racing Team pit crew.

He will be in charge of changing left side tires during races. They were originally going to put him on the right side, but he couldn't throw the tires far enough.

I didn't recall seeing anyone reference Maske's blog entry from a couple of days ago:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com/nflinsider/2007/06/redskins_wisely_tone_it_down_t.html#comments

Posted by: JustMe | June 10, 2007 8:54 PM

from Maske: "The sixth overall pick in the draft perhaps should have been used to address a more pressing need on the defensive line, but it's difficult to quibble too much with selecting a player as talented as LSU safety LaRon Landry"

Difficult, but dammit on RI we do the difficult with ease.

And the impossible without breaking a sweat.

Posted by: cload and daggar | June 10, 2007 9:14 PM

"from periculum are coming from a only partially functioning brain."

Yeah I guess it must be why I'm psychic like John Smith. I predicted they wouldn't draft Amobe from Muskogee. I predicted they would draft a QB. I predicted they would go for defensive backs. It looks to me like they still are ... hmmmm.

Just call me Periculum the Medium ...
My wife is an neurotic engineer ... ~smiles~

Posted by: periculum | June 10, 2007 9:58 PM

And its not difficult at all to see why the drafted Landry. Good pass defense in the NFL = BLITZ + excellent pass coverage. Good run defense in the NFL = good up the middle MLB and tackles + RUN BLITZ. For Grilliams I guess that means lots of good linebackers. FAST linebackers = great safeties = Landry + Taylor. Followed by Washington, Fletcher, Blades, McIntosh, Marshall, etc.

What I can't get is why no one else seems to be able to see that?

Posted by: periculum | June 10, 2007 10:03 PM

my first reaction to sopranos finale: beautifuly done!

Posted by: dealer | June 10, 2007 10:07 PM

i really hope that double G aint too over confident with his ability to "coach 'em up" the d-line like he was with the linebacker corp of last year.

Posted by: dealer | June 10, 2007 10:10 PM

i just crapped my pants. wait it was the sopranos ended that stinks like that. as worthless as the nba finals.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 10, 2007 10:31 PM

It is interesting to see who Grilliams holds onto for his D. They've turned LB from a weakness last year to something between reasonably strong to outstanding. How many teams would look at McIntosh/Fletcher/Washington/Marshall as an upgrade? Add the rookies (Sartz/Blades) and you have a lot of options coming from the edge. Might be the plan to give Daniels a spell on passing downs...

Posted by: cload and daggar | June 10, 2007 10:48 PM

One time with enthusiasm... panties!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 10, 2007 10:53 PM

Cleveland truly sucks. Why did they even show up? King James? LeBron doesn't even look like a Duke.

I might not watch much pro ball, but I'm truly ticked that it should be our Wizards down there in San Antonio getting their a$$es handed to them.

Posted by: JustMe | June 10, 2007 10:58 PM

"How many teams would look at McIntosh/Fletcher/Washington/Marshall as an upgrade?"

Hmmm well the Bears for starters. I think McIntosh was the Briggs trade breaker. Then there is Denver who looks to start Warrick Holdman.

The Redskins now appear to have plenty of good depth at linebacker and safety. And let's face it Grilliams is going to look at safety as the true "generalist" linebacker. That is they really can cover receiver, make tackles, and blitz. If I were a defensive coordinator with Grilliams background I would be imagining a defense that featured Ken Houston and Jack Tatum when I look at Taylor and Landry. In the 70's and 80's that was what some teams built their defense around. Dominant LB's like LT and defensive ends like Reggie White changed all of that. More flash than function perhaps? How valuable were Ronnie Lott, Larry Wilson, Paul Krause (first a Redskin), Willie Wood, Ken Houston, Jack Tatum, etc to their teams?
And how many defensive lineman have played at Reggie White's level?

Look at what the classic safety was supposed to do. He (not the LBs) are supposed to look at the offense and call the defensive play. He goes to the football on running downs and passing downs. He is the guy who covers against the deep threat. He uses his speed to blitz the QB. He is the QB of the defense. Except he does more for a defense than a QB does for an offense.

Things may have changed today ... apparently not in Grilliams mind. Now the thing may be to see just how cerebral the 'Skins safeties can be. Can they replace Antonio Pierce in that arena?

Posted by: periculum | June 10, 2007 11:10 PM

No d-bag, that's just what I could put out there without spoiling it for anyone. Though it was great. Your logic, wow, that's top shelf stuff.

Posted by: SMACK | June 11, 2007 12:05 AM

i'am going to tell you like this unless the Cavs attack not only Duncan but the Spurs bigs and force them to get into foul trouble early like the suns did there is no way they are going to have a chance in this series and the problem the Cavs have is that they don't have enough weapons on offense to be deadlyin the playoffs yes they sweeped the Wizards but if the Wizards had Butler and arenas the Cavs would be out of the playoffs right now.

Anyone see the surreal Bush in Albania footage? First, why do these people worship this man? Secondly, how does the SS allow some Albanian guy to get both his hands around the head of the leader of the free world. Man that's even better than that popediving guy last week.

re: james thrash...i didn't say anything to him other than "excuse me"...he was getting on and i was getting off the ele. it took me a second to figure out who he was cuz his face looked familiar but he was so light. players usually are before the summer i guess...

anyways i would just say "hi" or a nod if i see "someone". unless of course if i run into mr. spurrier. then i would go ga ga...and act like a monkey

but the reason i mentioned jungle fever was because it was on (hbo) as i typed my comment...and couldn't believe the cast...and i'v never seen it before. not a big spike lee fan though enjoyed the air jordan commercials, do the right thing and the inside man.

Sopranos SPOILER ALERT!

i guess we can talk sopranos now...that our WC peeps got to watch it too.

i don't know about you guys but i was like CREDITS PLEASE!!!! at 9:50...i was like i'm happy, mr. chase. i'm content. stop it. stop it. i was so very afraid. like the fbi dude said "i think we're going to win"..."i think we're going to win"...end the game already! just hold on to the ball!

I'll be blogging from home today. My daughter's temp was at 102 earlier today. She is not feeling well at all.

Anyway, why is everyone making a big deal out of Gilbert opting out of his contract next year?!?!?!? It only makes sense. Sense he signed his contract with the Wiz he has become a max contract player and no one can deny that.

The only reason they had a player option is because if Gil didn't live up to his expectations he could at least exercise that option if he thought he needed another year to prove himself or he thought he was going to get any real $$ on the market.

That being said, I'll trade Gilbert for Kobe.

SPOILER ALERT!!! SOPRANOS

Flag on the PLay

On David Chase of Sopranos fame. Horrible ending. After 8 some odd years ago asking everyone to take a trip with him as he explained the life of this mobster, and basically saying it would not end without closure, then... it ends without closure.

On a related note, my wife said she heard there would be a movie to show the true ending. Anyone else hear that?

Posted by: Zebra | June 11, 2007 8:53 AM

SPOILER ALERT!!! SOPRANOS

Also just heard the stretch of the year. It faded to black because the whole series was from Tony's perspective, and he was shot and killed so everything went black.

Yeah, they expect everyone to make that connection? Sorry, this series was never LOST, and should stop trying to be if that is truly the case.

Posted by: Zebra | June 11, 2007 8:58 AM

Worst... ending... EVER

These "choose your own adventure" endings are fine for a 2-hour movie, but not for an 8-year, 80+ episode, show... what a crock of shart.

The fans of this show deserved better. We deserved some type of closure, no matter what the ending happened to be. I can't tell you how disappointed I am.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | June 11, 2007 9:09 AM

Sorry Zebra, that's how I saw it too. Tony's brains are in the onion rings. But then my favorite part was the cat. And my second favorite part was the bottle of ketchup.

All in all, I'd rather be watching Sunday Night Football.

Posted by: SMACK | June 11, 2007 9:14 AM

My take on it was that it doesn't end. Their lives continue, but we are done seeing how it continues.

I feel the tony was killed angle is for those who really want closure, and are trying to find that in the fade to black.

I am just of the mind that the writer wanted to make a point that not everything has closure. And he amped us all up by showing this sketchy guy, but really it was b/c AJ was walking in behind him. And then the crap with meadow was to make you think something was about to happen.

Chase was getting his jollys knowing he could jerk us around like that. The joke was on us.

Posted by: Zebra | June 11, 2007 9:26 AM

That was anything but a "fade to black".

Posted by: SMACK | June 11, 2007 9:50 AM

JLC/Cindy can we get a Sopranos thread up in here??!?! Would love to hear both your takes and get some chattin!!!

Posted by: chris larry | June 11, 2007 9:51 AM

I thought my tivo F'ed up when it went to credits. I thought I missed about ten minutes or something.

The sketchy guy looked familiar, like part of Tony's crew. I thought maybe he is protection and they all live on.

Definitely no closure. The whole show was weak. I predict this isn't the last we hear of the Soprano family.

Posted by: monkalicious | June 11, 2007 10:07 AM

The show's been weak for a couple years now. But Tony's dead now, and it's over. Chase could have included a gunshot, a thud, hysterical screaming. But really, what would that have added to the ending?

Posted by: SMACK | June 11, 2007 10:13 AM

Flag on like the last ten posts for not starting with SPOILER ALERT!

Posted by: dcsween | June 11, 2007 10:19 AM

Smack...the show has not been weak for awhile now, go slurp Romo....

Posted by: chris larry | June 11, 2007 10:22 AM

David Chase could have made up for the last few weak seasons by ending the show with some closure. The quote from last week "family doesn't get touched". Did they just kill Tony or wipe out the whole family? Who ordered the hit if he was killed? His only enemy we knew about was now dead. To have a draw your own conclusion to a show that spanned that much time was awful. If you compare the first 3-4 seasons to the johhnycakes like soap opera it changed into is like night and day.

Posted by: John | June 11, 2007 10:25 AM

It's been a lousy soap opera for about the last three years. I don't think the last dozen episodes could live up to the opening sequence. Go back and watch the first few seasons, when it wasn't as weak as Scott's arm.

CL watches The Young and the Restless.

Posted by: SMACK | June 11, 2007 10:33 AM

I actually do love Young and the Restless......

Posted by: chris larry | June 11, 2007 10:37 AM

Is Lavar Arrington crazy, a pathological liar, what? He's on Sportstalk 980 intimating that he will actually play again, and that there might be some interest from the Ravens. The RAVENS??? You've got to be kidding me.

Posted by: JustMe | June 11, 2007 10:38 AM

CL that better be a joke!

Brunell 'Close to Full Strength'
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
June 8, 2007

Mark Brunell has resumed throwing, five months after he underwent surgery for a labrum repair in his left shoulder.
Brunell has steadily increased his workload during OTAs.

"[Thursday, June 7] was the first day that I had a lot of reps," he said. "I'm real pleased with how I felt."

It's expected that Brunell will be limited in the June 15-17 mini-camp. He anticipates being fully healthy by the start of training camp in late July.

Said head coach Joe Gibbs: "Mark has had a couple good days of work. It was good seeing him the last few days out there. We felt like he wasn't going to be ready for [mini-camp] originally, and then we kept getting good reports.

"He started throwing out here until he finally got the clearance to get a couple good days of work."

Brunell underwent the surgery in January. He suffered the injury during the Nov. 5 game against the Dallas Cowboys at FedExField.

Brunell started the first nine games of the 2006 season, completing 162-of-260 passes for 1,789 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He had a QB rating of 86.5.

This year, Brunell enters the season as the backup to starter Jason Campbell.

Brunell has been a starter most of his career, but he has served as a backup at various times during his three-year tenure with the Redskins.

He understands his role.

"As a backup, you have to be ready and you have to work real hard," he said. "You don't get the reps [during practices], but at the same time you understand that your number could be called. I expect Jason to have a great season."

Asked about Campbell's development, Brunell said: "He has spent as much time, if not more, than any other player in this offseason, studying film, working on the field and in the weight room. You couldn't ask for a better attitude and he has improved dramatically.

"He's developing leadership and he carries himself really well. And he is just getting better as these [off-season] practices go on."

Posted by: Breaking News | June 11, 2007 10:47 AM

I think Arrington will miss most if not all of this season and end up with the Skins either at the end of this season or next.

Posted by: Periculum | June 11, 2007 11:01 AM

Worst QB situation in the league? Can't be any worst than it was under Spurrier and Schottenheimer? LOL I guess we'll just have to wait and see ... this is usually where they usually end up attaching the 'genius' tag to Gibbs ...

Posted by: periculum | June 11, 2007 11:06 AM

At least that is one thing we can actually thank the cowboys for, getting Jason Campbell in the starting line-up.

And sween, sorry about the no Spoiler alert. I did on my first two, and not on the last one.

There is only about a 10 minute section of the show worth watching.

Posted by: Zebra | June 11, 2007 11:06 AM

sween,

You couldn't realistically expect to make it through today without hearing about the Sopranos, right? That would be like missing a Skins game on Sunday, then hoping to catch it on DVR Monday night after work without knowing the result.
