Justin Skaggs

Should have posted about this sooner, but as many of you already know, former Redskin WR Justin Skaggs passed away this weekend from brain cancer. It's a horrible story, as the receiver, who was playing in the Arena League, was 28 and was just diagnosed with the disease Jun 1.

According to the Salt Lake paper, he went into the hospital 5 am Thursday with severe headaches, and was on a respirator by Friday. Just hard to imagine. Obviously a terribly sad story.

The Redskins put out a statement from owner Dan Snyder yesterday:

"All of us at the Washington Redskins are shocked and saddened by the death of Justin Skaggs. During his two years with the team no one worked harder to make himself better and to make his team better. His family is in our prayers during this terribly tragic time."

Skaggs joined the Redskins as an un-drafted free agent wide receiver in April 2001 and spent parts of two years with the organization.

That's unbelievable. What a horrific loss. A sad day indeed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Amazing. How absolutely horrible. To be diagnosed and then die 15 days later. I simply can't imagine the shock his family must be going through.

It's so cliche, but you really do have to live every day like it's your last.

Jason
Thanks for posting. This hit me pretty hard. He reminded me of Rudy. This kid tried so hard. He would have done anything to make the team. Any true skins fan pulled for him to make the team. It was good to see him dress for one game during his career. He always excelled in the pre-season games.

How many former redskins died this year?

Just a thought...

Oh wow. That's awful. I had absolutely no idea. That poor poor kid. He seemed like such a devoted guy when he was here. There's definitely a lesson in there about living life to the fullest, which it seems that Justin did. He pursued his dream and he got to play in the NFL. I'm happy that he experienced success before he died, but still, any time someone dies at 28, it is a tragedy. He will not be forgotten.

That's just terrible...he was so young and had so much life ahead of him. My prayers are with his family and friends.

By the way, Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there.

Jason,

There's just nothing to say after this. Can you please put up a new post -- anything would do except this. It's just so sad and deflating, especially on Fathers' Day.

Justin Skaggs was one of those underdogs that we rooted for because he worked so hard. It seems like every year, we have one of those kind of guys. If cancer had given Justin a chance, he would have beaten it. I know a boy that was diagnosed with brain cancer and leukemia at age three. He fought it for nearly six years and finally won, thanks to the great doctors at Johns Hopkins and stem cell therapy. Eventually we will beat cancer.

This is unbelievebly sad news. I always pulled for Justin to make a play. He seemed like he wanted to succeed more than anyone else at times.

I almost bought his jersey this year. They had game worn jerseys at fedex earlier this year. I was torn between Justin Skaggs and Darnarien McCants. I ended up getting the D Mac jersey. These were the only affordable ($159.00) jerseys that were not old practice squad players. I am going to inquire about the Skaggs Jersey

RIP Justin

Sad.

Is the death related to football concussions?

God Bless him and his Family...

I went to school with this guy and he was the most stand-up guy ever. He loved everyone he came in contact with in his own way, he loved his family and he loved God. His life will be a testimony to the strength and power of God.

I loved the way Justin played. I have been a Skins season ticket holder and have been to every preseason game since 1997. I have seen many receivers come and go, but none made the impact he did. He contributed and hustled in every way even busting the wedge on special teams. I also remember a fantastic game winning catch that I thought for sure would guarantee him a roster spot with the Redskins. He came back a second year only to be disappointed again. This guy was all about effort, and as a football fan I respected his commitment and perseverance. He has my complete admiration hearing how he dealt with his tragic diagnosis. He said he wanted to increase awareness about his disease, to help others. Good bless him and his family.
