More Depth At CB - Jerametrius Butler Signed And Other Stuff

Skins add former Rams CB Butler. They tried to get him three years ago when Coach Joe returned, but their $15-million offer sheet was matched. Since then Butler has been oft injured - knee and hamstring problems - and was no longer in the Rams plans and he was cut Tuesday.

ALERT - Felt like I should add this after checking my email. Don't take this as a Shawn Springs replacement move. No freaking out, people. It's just depth. No one thinks Butler could replace Springs and they want the best backfield possible. It's just another guy to push for a roster spot.

Okay - back to the original blog.

Coach Joe said the Skins acted quickly to get Butler. despite already adding Smoot and Macklin this offseason to go with Springs (still excused today to tend to his pregnant wife) and Rogers. Obviously, the defensive backs were a major area of concern this offseason, and the Redskins want strength in numbers.

"When you get a chance to add there (at corner), we're going to do it," Gibbs said.

As for Butler, he just hopes to make the team and realizes that special teams is his best bet off the bat (unless a bunch of other corners get hurt). Butler, 28, missed all of 2005 due to injury and appeared in just six games last season. If healthy, he might be a good depth guy and would maybe push Ade Jimoh for a spot on teams, but it's been a long time since he's played regular football. Certainly worth taking a shot on.

The plethora of other quality CBs on the roster did not deter Butler, and he said the Redskins' attempts to sign him to an offer sheet three years ago made them his desired destination.

"I think here I might get a chance to play special teams," Butler said. "I just want to do whatever I can to make the team ... I've just got to stay healthy."

The Skins cut DB Chip Cox to make room for Butler on the roster.

-0-

Springs was excused again, and were London Fletcher and Sean Taylor to tend to other business.

LB Marcus Washington was rested with a sore back, but Bubba Tyer said it was just a precaution. He hurt his back lifting Wednesday, but it is very minor and not in any way related to his hip and other injuries. G Randy Thomas has a swollen knee and left practice a bit early as a precaution.

WR Brandon Lloyd ( minor hamstring issue) did not practice but is fine, Bubba said. WR Santana Moss (groin/hip) worked out on his own on the sidelines, and could get involved in a drill or two during mini-camp, Tyer said, but is aiming for a full return for training camp. DE Justin Hickman (knee) will report for mini camp and be evaluated then.

QB Mark Brunell (labrum surgery) said he is progressing ahead of schedule - as did Coach Joe - and feels good stretching out on deeper throws. He is not 100 percent yet but will be there by camp. As we already know, RB Clinton Portis (knee) is out until training camp.

Also, Coach Joe has decided to keep the guys off the field next week until mini camp on the weekend. They were scheduled to OTA practice on Tues. and Wed. but will do light work and walkthroughs instead.

Okay, I think that's pretty much it.

Oh yeah, had a great conversation with Bramlet this afternoon after his practice in Hamburg. Will post it tomorrow.

Hope you all have a great weekend.

Cheers.

Wonder if this means Springs gets dealt, maybe as part of a package for Schobel?

Posted by: Jason | June 7, 2007 2:26 PM

Third!

This Butler has potential; he was highly-touted back when the 'Skins tried to sign him away from the Rams. If (and that's a big IF) he can make an ideal comeback, I think he has the talent to at least be a #2 CB. Let's hope so, in case Double-Move doesn't work out and in case Smoot doesn't return to form.

In other news, fans are still waiting for a DL or two...

Posted by: jcabana | June 7, 2007 2:45 PM

Butler will be lucky to make the roster, we seem to have a real logjam now at corner.

Posted by: RedskinsWarpath.com | June 7, 2007 2:55 PM

With Jason's comments earlier this week about Springs conditioning, wonder if they may be preparing to use him some at free safety?

Posted by: Rich from Salisbury | June 7, 2007 3:02 PM

Ok, lets say we go with 5 CBs on the roster this year and 4 safeties. Who will be our corners? We've got:

Shawn Springs
Fred Smoot
Carlos Rogers
David Macklin
Jerametrius Butler
Ade Jimoh
Byron Westbrook

That's 7 CBs and I can't pick which two shouldn't be on the active roster. Sure, you can suggest we move Westbrook to the practice squad, but from everything I hear, he has WOWed the coaching staff and I seriously doubt someone wouldn't snag him up in a heartbeat. A good number of the other corners are older and/or have a history of injuries. We can't let a young rookie like westbook just slip away from us. IMO Westbrook and Jimoh will battle for a spot and Macklin and Butler do the same.

I'm terribly excited that this could finally be THE YEAR we finally get rid of Ade "bad penny" Jimoh!

Or maybe if the Redskins trade springs and Butler for schobel. OKAY GUYS LETS START THE SPECULATING.

McCray move pending

The Jaguars might soon have to take a hard line in trying to motivate defensive end Bobby McCray to rejoin the team by the start of training camp.

Unhappy with his contract, McCray did not report to minicamp or any of the club's offseason activities.

The Jaguars have until June 15 to send McCray a letter warning him that they will lower his original restricted free-agent tender offer ($1.85 million) to 110 percent of his salary from last season, which would place his 2007 base salary at approximately $480,000. McCray has refused to sign the $1.85 million tender because he wants a long-term deal.

"Internally, we've had discussions. There's only so much we can do," Del Rio said. "Ultimately, you hope to find that common ground where the player decides to be a part of the team and the team is happy to have that player."

Posted by: Jags Junkie | June 7, 2007 3:05 PM

Jerametrius Butler is the best Roman cornerback playing today and could work out very well for the Skins. And for all of you conspiracy-minded people who claim that Gibbs loves Brunell because their shared religious beliefs, etc., etc.; you can throw that thinking away right now. We all know that Romans are pagans and Gibbs is clearly excited to have this gentleman on the team. Good luck, Jerametrius!

Posted by: Goldenfried | June 7, 2007 3:08 PM

C'mon guys, it's so simple. Maybe you need a refresher course.

CB: Springs, Smoot, Rogers, Macklin

S: Taylor, Landry, Prioleau

That's a solid freakin' secondary.

Posted by: Mike | June 7, 2007 3:14 PM

Posted by: Anonymous | June 7, 2007 3:19 PM

Can we please get rid of Ade Jimoh once and for all! Any time he is in the game (on defense) the other team goes after him and he is toast. Please get rid of him.

Posted by: Frank | June 7, 2007 3:19 PM

Don't tell me my business, boy!

Posted by: stevie in gp | June 7, 2007 3:22 PM

Butler is Ade's competetion. As you see, Butler is only worried about making it on special teams. Excuse me, that's Ade's spot. O, well then the Butler signing is a good thing.

Also guys, you should know that teams are going with more 3 and 4 wide receiver sets more often and defenses are compensating by having more afformidle CBs and Safeties on the roster to cover these WRs.....

Posted by: 4th | June 7, 2007 3:25 PM

We all know Springs will get hurt in training camp.

So basically, Butler is the #3 or #4 corner.

My bet is he'll be #3 (if healthy) because the 'Skins have wanted him a long time, surely more than Macklin.

Posted by: Cliff Huxtable | June 7, 2007 3:26 PM

4th, did you just crunch together 'affordable' and 'formidable'? That is awesome.

And it does accurately describe what we're looking for at this point, given our cap situation. Anybody afformible out there who wants to play DE for us, right this way.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 7, 2007 3:28 PM

Posted by: Smooot27 | June 7, 2007 3:43 PM

re: that Bobby McCray situation -

Where did the NFLPA get their contract lawyers? Off the PUP list?

The Jags make a high tender offer to McCray (as a RFA) to keep other teams away. No team tries to sign him. Then, when McCray tries to use that leverage to get himself a better deal, the Jags are allowed to lower the offer (after the market is closed)?
What a crock!

Gene Upshaw should resign - the only thing he is taking care of is himself.

Jason,

A little premature on the weekend wishes there... unless it skipped to Friday while I was asleep at my desk during lunch today (Thursday, right?)

Posted by: Gibby | June 7, 2007 4:05 PM

They shouldn't even play Springs at all in the preseason. When he inevitably gets hurt it should be during a real game at least and hopefully not for long. I love the overkill in the secondary, why are they not doing the same on the DL.

Posted by: Anonymous | June 7, 2007 4:07 PM

I totally forgot about Vernon Fox.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 7, 2007 4:08 PM

Maybe the Secret Plan for this year is to go 'small ball' every defensive down. Two linemen, three LBs, six DBs.

Yeah, we might give up a bunch of yards, but our D line rotation should stay super-fresh.

I'm just sayin'

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 7, 2007 4:12 PM

I was chatting it up with one of my friends who happens to be a Vikings fan. He mentioned their need at corner and I mentioned our need at DE. He's usually pretty knowledgeable with his football stuff although he may have been delirious at the time. He suggested that the Vikings trade DE Darrion Scott for Carlos Rogers. Sounds like a good plan to me. Big DE that can rush the passer and stop the run. Both guys are young. How do we get this idea up there to the FO?

Posted by: bigfish | June 7, 2007 4:20 PM

Sounds like everybody is touting a defense geared to stop a Spurrier offense????????

Redskins Who Should Not Play in Pre-Season Games:

Jason Campbell (keep him under wraps and surprise the league)

Clinton Portis - let that shoulder heal.

Ladell Betts - save his legs for the real thing.

Santana Moss - rest that groin.

ARE - surprise element.

Brandon Lloyd - heal that hamstring.

Chris Cooley - he has no real backup, so don't waste him in meaningless games.

Jansen and Samuel - it's a long season; don't wear them out.

Philip Daniels - we already know what he can do when he is healthy.

Cornelius Griffin - ditto

Marcus Washington - let the healing be complete.

Shawn Springs - reduce wear and tear on old guys.

Sean and LaRon - we know what they are going to do; let it be a surprise to the league.

Who does that leave to play pre-season games?

1) Backups who need to prove themselves.

2) Rookies who need to prove themselves.

3) NFL Europa guys - to see if they are any good on this side of the ocean.

4) Brunell and Collins, who need to prove they are worthy of roster spots.

Sure, the team will probably suck during pre-season (as in 0-4), but who cares? If the games don't count, why risk your good players needlessly? Why not let backups perform under game conditions and see if they are worth the price of their league-minimum contracts? And maybe a few gems get uncovered in the process (as well as a few frauds exposed).

Finally, just think of all the worthless videotape our early season opponents will have on us to prepare with.

Come on, Gibbs - let's see how really "super smart" you are. Bench all your starters during pre-season!

Dr. Kildare,

Weren't you paying attention last year? The Redskins tried your approach. The starters were on the field, but they didn't take it seriously. The coaches didn't take it seriously, preferring your approach of "worthless tape." The result was that they weren't ready for the first game and lost to worthless Minnesota.

This is the NFL and there is a point to pre-season games. You don't play not to get hurt. You play to win and you play to win every game.

Posted by: KK | June 7, 2007 4:54 PM

You made my point. The starters (even the veterans) have to get use to Game Speed. You can't afford to wait until the season starts.

But, the pre-season is too much of a good thing. I think it's a good thing to lose at least one pre-season game.

I read that sports champions like to win, but are really motivated, not by the laurels, but because they really HATE to lose. Losing is a bitter pill. What better way to start the season?

Gibbs knows that Pre-season is more about the depth chart than winning.

It will be interesting to see how they do against the Titans. Maske's column sizes up their off-season moves if you haven't read it yet. The comments nail this post to the wall.

It doesn't matter, but the Skins pre-season schedule is a tough one.

Posted by: Stumped | June 7, 2007 5:29 PM

KK-

You didn't mean that, right?

Play to win pre-season games? As in use your best players/plays to win the games?

Pre-season is to get players and coaches ready for the start of the real season. Players should play to win the play, coaches should scheme to win each drive, but star players should not be used to win games that don't count towards overall record.

Should take pre-season more seriously than 2006, but playing to win is a recipe for Spurrier-eqsue disaster.

O.W. - great to have you in the house - loved you in Clear and Present Danger.

Jason - Love the Alice reference!

Larry Bud - Yeah I sleep mate, it's just the time difference!

The past few years, we've generally had 9-10 DB's on the roster, so that being the case, you'd think we'd be looking at keeping -

S.Springs
S.Taylor
L.Landry
C.Rogers
F.Smoot
D.Macklin
J.Butler
P.Prioleau
V.Fox

That's a good 9 players, all bar Landry have starting experience.

If they decide to go with 10, it'll be between Westbrook, Jimoh and Stoutmire. Hopefully it's Westbrook who makes it through.

Posted by: kost52 | June 7, 2007 6:48 PM

They sign Butler and everybody raves about Westbrook.

Are you sure Prioleau and Macklin are in the mix? They're getting older and you have to develop the young blood.

Posted by: Stumped | June 7, 2007 7:18 PM

Stumped-

You're right, who knows, maybe they intend on keeping Spring, Rogers, and Smoot as the #1/#2/#3 will let Macklin and Butler fight for the #4 spot, and save the #5 for a youngster like Westbrook.

As for Prioleau, Grilliams loves his versatility and knowledge of the system, but I haven't heard anything about how he's recovering from his knee reco. Ultimately I think his status will rely on his recovery.

Any news on PP J-La?

Posted by: Hot Carl | June 7, 2007 7:28 PM

When we all fell in love with Reed Doughty last season, it was because of his personal story, right, not particularly because of his play?

Speaking of which, J-La, would it be possible to get an update on Doughty's son?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 7, 2007 7:33 PM

Does tea bagging mean the same thing over there as it does here? Over here it's generally something that gets done to the first guy who falls asleep when drinking with the guys.

Posted by: kost52 | June 7, 2007 7:45 PM

kost52-

Versability probably plays a big part too (Nate: that's versatility and play-making ability contracted together, if you're fallowing).

The quandary: whether tis better to hold on to veterans or perchance to develop the younger ones... it comes down to versability and the ever present salary cr@p, and of course, King Danny.

Posted by: Stumped | June 7, 2007 7:45 PM

Westbrook sounds like practice squad material to me. He's too young to master the defense before the start of the season, not a true stud-prospect, and the Redskins have too many inexpensive vets willing to play special teams.

My guess:

S.Springs
S.Taylor
L.Landry
C.Rogers
F.Smoot
D.Macklin
J.Butler
P.Prioleau
V.Fox
O.Stoutmire

I think Jimoh has burned the coaching staff a few too many times and if Butler and Prioleau are healthy, Jimoh is the odd man out.

Posted by: mugamack | June 7, 2007 7:49 PM

So basically what we're looking for, if we had to sum it up, is afformidable versability.

How I would love to hear Sam Huff pronounce those words.

ESPN CHAT -

Mike H (NYC): KC, the Skins continue to add bodies at CB...how were the metrics for Butler (When he last played) and Macklin?

ESPN's KC Joyner: Bodies is a good way to describe some of the CBs Washington has picked up. Butler's metrics have been poor since his injury a couple of years ago. Macklin's metrics were actually quite good last year, so I'm all for that pickup.

Posted by: mugamack | June 7, 2007 8:19 PM

I don't see what was done to really help out the d-line. The sacks and interceptions for the Redskins last year were abysmal. It won't matter who's the cornerback or safety if a QB has all day to throw.

Posted by: Steve | June 7, 2007 8:22 PM

muga - Not only that, but I'm pretty sure the Giants are trying to convert a Guard to a Tackle (Diehl), a DE to a LB (Kiwanuka) and a Deer in Headlights to a QB (LBM)

I was off on the weekend thing - felt like Friday to me all day. ever get off by a day and just can't shake it?

I once saw a dude get fully teabagged by a stranger while passed out on a park bench in the Canton Square right on O'Donnell St. while all the bars were emptying out at 2 am on a Friday. some dudes were walking past the drunk kid, one of them did the teabaggoing and the other took a picture with his phone - almost like they set out that night to perform a random teabagging on an unsuspecting subject. Weird but true.

Nate, been meaning to catch up with Reed. Really hope everything is cool with his son. With 90 guys running around it's tough to see everyone but I will definitely get an update next week.

Cheers.

what a difference a year makes.last year we had no depth and some guy named Archuleta.now,we are all jacked up over the wealth of depth.More important,Williams has his stable of DB's required to run his defense.I'm convinced, that if we did have a great front four, that it would only help to justify sending more corners and safeties to the QB.What we need from the boys up front is to stop the run and keep the o-line off his backers so that he can........send more corners and safeties.I'm not expecting us to be top 5,but it is reasonable to expect top 10.One more point about our warriors up front, they have tremendous pride and everyone, including us has written them off.It would not surprise me if this unit takes that negative and turns in a solid year.basically, that's all we really need. They are not done guys, but they must stay healthy.

Maybe RT will post some scoop on the OL. Of course, he'd have to use a pseudonym...like maybe....THE ROOSTER.

I can't obsess over DE or the secondary anymore.

Do the 2007 Hogs have the horsepower?

(better watch those caps, Stumped or Zebra may throw a flag!)

I'm posting in the third-person...it does seem like Friday.

Posted by: Stumped | June 7, 2007 8:59 PM

In terms of a DE pick up (i.e. Schobel) when would this have the potential of happening? Do trades still happen so late in the summer? JLa keeps mentioning it and I get overly anxious about the possibilty but haven't herd it anywhere else. Could we expect a move before training camp?

Posted by: Anonymous | June 7, 2007 9:02 PM

I wouldn't worry too much about the Thailand fixture. I'd say that it's only been organised once they've found out they weren't fixtured to play a qualifier. Probably could've tried to find some better competition.

I think I would like to see Ruud back, our strikers just don't seem to be putting the ball in the back of the net as much as I'd like.

He should probably be in the team simply for his penalty taking ability!

Posted by: kost52 | June 7, 2007 9:08 PM

I'm thinking it's getting too late to add high skill players to the mix, but the play book for a single purpose DE (get the QB) may not require a lot of finesse.

Jasno? Lisa?

Are you telling me that men tea bag each other for sport??? Good grief. You learn something new every day. LMGO

Posted by: JustMe | June 7, 2007 9:11 PM

JustMe - When I'm with my mates, it results in some very late nights, because nobody wants to be the first asleep!

At my birthday last year, one of the guys fell asleep on my couch. This time though, rather than tea bagging, one of my mates got creative, let's just say it involved a cocktail frankfurt and some de-pantsing.

We all have the video footage on our phones, and bring it out whenever he gets out of line! He didn't find/notice the frankfurt until he was in the cab on the way home! Haha

Posted by: kost52 | June 7, 2007 9:25 PM

LMGO Men certainly entertain themselves in very different ways than females do. LOL

Posted by: JustMe | June 7, 2007 9:30 PM

I think teabagging is a frat-boy sort of thing. Never teabagged anyone. I have written all over a few passed out people, and piled some shti on top of them. Innocent stuff.

Posted by: SMACK | June 7, 2007 9:34 PM

i have a droopy sack and can teabag myself.

Posted by: old man river | June 7, 2007 9:39 PM

I've never tea bagged anyone either, I'm just the guy who encourages the ones who do tea bag!

Posted by: kost52 | June 7, 2007 9:43 PM

Anyway, is it just me, or is there an abnormal amount of players who are potential holdouts or unhappy with contracts this off-season? Briggs, Samuel, McCray, Burgess, Schobel, Ellis etc.

Posted by: kost52 | June 7, 2007 9:56 PM

Le Fraud is getting punked! hey le Fraud,
Sike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's what the spurs are saying to le fraud. BAMF! wizards better get lucky in the draft and get a monster blocker/rebounder...

btw, this has got to be the deepest draft in...as long as i can rember...

Posted by: dealer | June 7, 2007 10:55 PM

Anyone up for an Abe Lincoln?

And props to JLC for the story, I enjoy it when you join in the fun.

Posted by: Hot Carl | June 7, 2007 11:07 PM

Good grief. Is San Antonio trying to *give* this game away? I don't like them, But I like the Cavs and LeBron (ugh) even less.

Posted by: JustMe | June 7, 2007 11:33 PM

and the spurs cover! how do these vegas people KNOW???? the line was 7 or 7.5 points...

yeah, justme, i never liked the spurs either but don't like cleveland cuz of le pawn and his coach...

lePawn is good but i don't know there's something about him that rubs me the wrong way...

and how about larry hughes sitting during crunch time...losing his job to a rookie!

knock on wood but ernie grunfeld hasn't bad a bad decision yet...

Posted by: dealer | June 7, 2007 11:40 PM

I agree, dealer. There's just something about that kid that I don't like. Yuck.

And, every time I see Larry Hughes chillin' on the bench, I'm grateful the Wizards didn't overpay to keep him here. Great decision. Kinda like letting Dockery go will prove to be for the Skins.

Posted by: JustMe | June 7, 2007 11:47 PM

Hopefully Grunfeld can work his magic when he deals Haywood. If we can anything for him it would be a bonus. Does anyone else think Varejo(sp?) is Michael ruffin with hair? I mean his offense is poo poo.

Posted by: tmac | June 8, 2007 12:17 AM

I feel so bad for that nice Curt Schilling that he didn't get a no-hitter today.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 1:07 AM

We actually managed to have a conversation about teabagging up here, didn't we? Wow. And wow.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 1:13 AM

Boy, this bitey dog story just makes everybody involved look good, doesn't it?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2897066

So let me get this straight: the sheriff of Surry County, Slowpoke McFootdragger himself, is practically accusing the Feds of racism because they're taking over the investigation. Unbelievable.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 1:17 AM

Marketing genius Snyder had to partner with another station just to get Skins games broadcast to the whole DC area?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/07/AR2007060702510.html

Zebra, it would be beautiful if you could find a way to throw a flag on Red Zebra for this.

Since 100.3 is a quasi-oldies station, maybe they can bring Frank back for play-by -play.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 1:39 AM

Not even crickets? I can't even get some frickin' crickets in here?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 2:23 AM

Speaking of safeties, remember this dude? Ifeanyi Ohalete (I can so vividly remember Sam struggling with that name), late of Washington, Arizona and Cincy, has shown up as a participant in the Arena League. Dang.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 2:50 AM

Whoops forgot to include the link. That's my signal that it's time to hang it up.

How are we doing on the march to 50k?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 2:54 AM

It shocks me that some people would throw Springs and his previously injured tummy under the bus for a guy with bad wheels.

Our least favorite writer writes:

"Butler's career began to spiral, however, when he suffered a season-ending knee injury in the team's 2005 training camp. After Butler rehabilitated the surgically-repaired knee, he sustained a serious hamstring injury last summer in camp."

Shawn Springs isn't going anywhere. There is no one in Ashburn or out there that can replace him save Samuel in NE. But, Asante would cost the team big time not to mention the 2008 cap hit to cut or trade Springs.

Stop the lunacy.

As far as the DB's, wouldn't it be better to keep 10 or 11 and have one be this year's TJ on the sidelines? (On the roster; not dressed.)

Posted by: bangkokben | June 8, 2007 3:31 AM

Red Zebra...sounds like one of those bad new cocktails made from Red Bull.

Posted by: Stumped | June 8, 2007 3:56 AM

Sorry, Nate - we are very late in arriving tonight.

*****************************

Funny that you should mention Frank. I actually saw him this past Saturday. I had taken the boy to a Pow Wow, and we saw Frank entering the event as we were leaving. He appeared to be in good health and even better spirits, and looked to be ready to take a million pictures. It was good to see that he seems to be doing quite well.

Posted by: JustMe | June 8, 2007 5:19 AM

JustMe, that is awesome. I was only joking above, of course, but it will never be better than Sonny, Frank and Sam.

I do think it's Riggo's fate to be the color guy when Sonny steps down, unless his teevee work (sports or soaps) takes off.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 9:34 AM

And I want to make it clear that I welcome Riggo to the booth, when that day comes. He's only going to be more of a loose cannon, and more salty, as he gets older.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 9:52 AM

Does anyone remember that old show that Tony McGee and Doc Walker had years ago?
I haven't lived in the area for years, so I don't even know if it's still on. That thing was hilarious. Home Team Sports channel or something?

Posted by: Goldenfried | June 8, 2007 9:54 AM

Where are you now, Goldenfried? Sorry if you've mentioned this before and I forgot.

I think HTS became Comcast SportsNet a few years back. Still on the air, still doing their thing. And they have Strawberry Shortcake. (Old RI blog reference.)

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 10:21 AM

I'm in New York City. And it's just like I pictured it. Skyscrapers. And everything. So Tony McGee is still broadcasting? That's great. I think that his fearless use of the bow-tie is one of the hidden keys to his success. Is Doc Walker still with him? While Doc is also good, my best memory of him is catching a swing pass in SB 17 and running up field -- all elbows and knees. Those guys were funny together, but then they had this female correspondent -- man, when she came on, the real comedy started. (And I don't mean that in a cruel way... I've noted some sensitive types around here recently...)

Posted by: Goldenfried | June 8, 2007 11:04 AM

Ah yes, New York City. It's a real neat town.

I didn't mean to suggest that Tony McGee is still on the teevee, just that HTS is still around under a different name. I know Doc Walker has parlayed his bit part in Gibbs 1.0 to a role as ubiquitous media figure in DC.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | June 8, 2007 11:12 AM

I just hope Doc isn't Big-Leaguing T. I know Doc's all over the place, but he's got to pull my man up! T has got talent that, while not as "mainstream" is quite effective and very entertaining. They're a dynamite team! And I tell you what -- I wish we had a Tony McGee on the team now. That guy could rush the passer.

Posted by: Goldenfried | June 8, 2007 11:28 AM

This is where my 'trust coach Joe' factor kicks in; With the relative 'non activity' in acquiring D-linemen I have to respect Gibb's strategy in showing some trust in the people they already have. One year of poor play is an aberration (on the D-line, that is), two years means you really have a problem, and if that happens then we'll really know how much the front office's philosophy has changed if the approach prioritizes draft picks vs. flashy ( = $$$) free-agent acquisition.
I like the Butler pick up: a quality person that injuries made more affordable. Again, the Gibbs factor: since he puts such a premium on character, toughness, and intelligence I think the Skins stole one in Butler. As bad a reputation that he has we have to trust, for example, that Gibbs sees things in Brandon Lloyd that we don't, and when a coach shows that type of faith in you ultimately you perform, which was a true hallmark of the Gibbs I era.
Doug Williams was a cast away coming here, and look what he brought us. Smoot came back (which means he really shouldn't have left).
Of course, how we let the best cover corner in the league (Champ Bailey) get away falls at the feet of Danny Boy....
