Freddy Signs With Benfica (Sorry, I Had Nowhere Else To Put This)
Will put a big blog on Samuels up in a second but just got word from Portgual a minute ago that my boy Freddy Adu signed his five-year deal with Benfica, one of soccer's most stories clubs. Freddy will fly back to DC Wednesday, pack some stuff and fly to Portugal for the start of the season on Sunday.
He gets a five year deal worth about $1.2 million (US). Freddy was dying to go abroad, so he waived his 50 percent due to him from the $2 million transfer fee to get the deal done. Freddy and MLS will split 10 percent of any sell on down the road (future transfer fee if/when Benfica sells him).
Freddy is super pumped to be going there. Great team. Cosmpolitan city. Great beaches. And they came after him hard, essentially bidding against themselves to up their contract terms to Freddy over the weekend to get a deal done. Great thing for US Soccer and I wish him all the best in Europe. Now I've just got to find a way to get the Superliga games on the satellite dish, since it's pretty much the only major league I don't have access to right now.

Damnit, no mixing religion with sports. Its bad enough christians decided to pray on sunday and thus televangelism inter-fears with my desire for a 7 hour pre-game show.

JLC, great news for US soccer... hopefully. It'll do him some real good to get beat up on by some real talent on a daily basis.
Now if only Eddie Johnson wouldn't go all Landon Donovan on us, and do the same thing.

seriously, does anyone really care about soccer? I agree with poster.

I love soccer. If, by "soccer", you mean hot size 0 blondes who hang out at the pool all day wearing two-tone lip gloss and pondering how to get a Nieman Marcus card.

i was the one that said soccer is dumb, i played it for 12 seasons growing up. it's just very slow to watch on a pro level. maybe if I grew up in europe watching it, things would be different. there is a reason we are at a football blog, not soccer. just my opinion.

Soccer is the worst.
Posted by: Ugh | July 31, 2007 3:06 PM
World Cup Soccer was extraordinary to watch. When I started watching all the other leagues, I kept falling asleep. MLS is completely unwatchable for me.

In the SJK thread caption he says he's sorry! and this one isn't about soccer ... its about a kid, and also about a city. attention soccer haters: break up your complaints into multiple posts -- we need to drive up the blog count.

Gee I went to a footbal insider site and they were talking Soccer? Soccer?? during the first week of training camp? Oh boy we are in trouble.

I've actually gotten into soccer a bit over the off-season. But now that Lord Football is getting ready to come back, my feeble brain cannot handle more that one love.
BTW--No offense to anyone that may already hold the title of Lord.

well, i don't really know why DC would want to support him, he didn't really do a whole heck of a lot anyway, from what I can recall. Either way, good luck to him. Maybe Snyder should have paid him to be our place kicker:)
Posted by: gregm | July 31, 2007 3:11 PM
Quick aside: I bet you Strahan is at least brought it for a look. No doubt in my mind. They would love to have his leadership here in Washington on the defense.
Also, I watched the entire Under-20 tournament and Adu was naishty. Just naishty. I love "the media ruined him" defense taken by everyone in MLS from commissioners to coaches. The league and coaches ruined that kid. Case closed. But I'm glad he will be tight so we can be competive with other world powers in the future. The Altidore kid is naishty too.
Posted by: The Governor | July 31, 2007 3:17 PM
I don't think we could afford strahan, nor do I think they will release him. Besides, he has to many miles on him anyway. Remember Bruce Smith????

Why talk about soccer when we could talk about a guy being hurt for the preseason! Maybe there is a rumor out there about another overrated, over the hill signing the Redskins are about to make!!!
I don't get why people are so xenophobic when it comes to soccer. Oh no! It's popular in other countries! We can't like it here! Where's my Nascar!
This is good news for Freddy. He looked really, really good at times in the U20 world cup last month. Especially against Brazil. I want to see him in a real USMNT game soon.

"Soccer is the worst."
No BIRD is the WORD, as in the Oriole bird. BUT NOT for long now. The Nationals pitching is improving. New young starters are pouring out all over the place. Jesus Flores will soon be an all-star catcher. Now, if they could only come up with some hitting, not to mention decent fielding in the outfield.
Looks like the infield is pretty set for awhile.
This baseball moment brought to you by your friends from "SJK". Where our only goal is to deride and belittle you with a smile.

gregm your dumb and obviously you sucked at soccer bro. Did you nbot read the disclaimer: (Sorry, I Had Nowhere Else To Put This) Don't read it if you don't care
Boring you want boring go watch baseball then.
Posted by: say it aint so ade jimoh | July 31, 2007 4:48 PM
playing it is one thing ade, watching it is something else. right wing passes to the center, center passes to the wing, wing passes to the center.....and so on. the players flop all over the place when they come in contact and if you win 3-1, the game is considered a blowout. you are right, i shouldn't read soemthing if I don't care about it....correct you are. I was hoping somewhere in there there was something football (american footbal) related. Obviously, most of the area feels the same way. When DC united won it all a few years back, how many hundreds showed up to celebrate? If that was the 'skins, the entire city would have shut down. I think I echo the sentiments of the dc area, and the US in general. Tell me I'm wrong.
Posted by: gregm | July 31, 2007 4:57 PM
Gregm,
Alright, I'll tell you.
You're wrong.
You could certainly argue that the US in general doesnt care about the MLS. But if you combine interest in MLS, Mens and Womens National Teams, Mexican league, South American/Euro leagues, Champions League, Gold Cup/Copa America, World Cup, Mens and Womens college soccer, high school soccer, youth clubs/travel teams, I would argue that many people in the US care about soccer.
Posted by: the cheat | July 31, 2007 5:20 PM
gregm,
Most people are fans of more than one sport and can appreciate the practice and determination needed to excel at any sport. Jasno works for a sports section of a major newspaper, so obviously he can appreciate multiple sports, because no sports editor would hire a one-sport reporter. A lot of people play football and can't appreciate the intracacies of play calling when watching the NFL, just like you playing soccer and not appreciating the skill when watching soccer. He's not trying to convert you, obviously. If you didn't want to read it then why bother posting so many times? You make yourself look as foolish as freddie does in benfica's sleeveless jersey
Posted by: Anonymous | July 31, 2007 5:30 PM
....so that's why it ranks behind football, baseball, basketball and hockey? I will give you that many parents invest a lot of time with their kids and soccer, no doubt about that. I am simply saying that as a whole, nobody really cares about MLS and to a lesser degree, soccer in general. The world cup might be the only exception. People in general, my opinion is, that the US looks at soccer the way that a lot of other countries look at the NFL. The only reason that LA brought in Beckham, who by the way is overpaid and way past his prime, was to spark an interest in the sport here. Otherwise, they know that nobody cares about it othewise people would be looking at home grown players, not someone from overseas like that. Tell me I'm wrong.

gregm, you are wrong and you are a douche.

"People in general, my opinion is, that the US looks at soccer the way that a lot of other countries look at the NFL."
The present US market for MLS isn't as big as the present market for the NFL, but demographics are changing. Unless we're getting paid for our opinions, it doesn't mean a whole lot. I don't give a damn if you like soccer, just like you don't give a damn that I do. It's not either of our blogs, so we are at the mercy of our host.
Posted by: Anonymous | July 31, 2007 6:54 PM
nice rebuttal k-squared.
not that anyone is left to read this but I must defend myself.
What US sport posts the largest revenue?
What US sport has the largest TV deals?
Which US sport charges the most per seat?
Soccer? No, I don't see how you can argue the point. The irony here is that we are on a skins blog talking about soccer. Granted, I will give you Man U or Realmadrid are going to have a serious following as well as a billion dollar price tag. But that is not here. Nobody can tell me that US soccer is comparable to the NFL. The bottom line in the league proves it. Obviously, in Europe the NFL didn't work, or at least the product they were putting on the field. What's funny anon, I was just agreeing with someone else's comment. I am not trying to insult anyone or the sport. I think most people that know anything about the sport recognize the effort those guys put into it. I just don't happen to like it and beleive that soccer in the US is not very popular because it lives in the shadow of everything else. That's why the Galaxy brought in Beckham. Trying to create a stir. Anon, you are correct, with the shifting demographics in the US and large markets like DC, I would expect it to grow. But I still stand by my original opinion, most people could care less about soccer in the US. Nobody, in my mind gave me a credible rebuttal. Enjoy the preseason everyone, I am sure I will be around to tick someone off. Cheers.

Man, Lucky Freddy.
I love Portugal. Neat place, nice people, relaxing atmosphere. But it ain't for everybody and I'm glad because just because the masses love something doesn't necessarily mean that makes it superior.
Go skins.

I've noticed that most of the soccer bashers are guys who lacked the ability to play any sport at any level, and like to think they're cool by slamming it.
However, if you ask REAL athletes, they'll tell you they might not like soccer, but respect the game and the ATHLETES who play it.
One final note; an old friend of mine who hated soccer told a guy half his size (and who happened to be a 2nd divison pro player) that soccer was gay. The soccer player proceeded to whip his tail...so, those saying soccer is for wimps, go say it to them instead of anonymously on a blog...
