Portis's Tendinitis Returns

Coach Joe says that Clinton was held out of practice because his knee tendinitis flared back up. He says the team will monitor it closely - of course - and is being extra careful. The problem was aggravated at Monday's practice, and with two sessions Wednesday I would be surprised if we saw Portis at both of them.

This is going to be a daily evaluation I fear. These can become major issues if not allowed to heal all the way - remember Michael Jordan trying to fight through it with the Wizards a few years back and how that minor preseason knee issue became a big deal? - or they can go away quickly.

We'll be watching closely, I can assure you that much.

According to Sportsnet, Buges was really impressed with Stephon Heyer during the OTAs...which is why he stepped in for Samuels today.

Betts

Posted by: Stumped | July 31, 2007 6:47 PM

I guess we will see if Heyer stays... Still doesn't make sense to not keep Wade at guard, even if just to get the reps.

Posted by: 4 skinz | July 31, 2007 6:48 PM

That's it. I'm hibernating until Sept. 9th

Posted by: 4-12 | July 31, 2007 6:49 PM

Clinton hates to practice (second ray of hope)...first ray, see above.

Posted by: Stumped | July 31, 2007 6:49 PM

Yeah, that doesn't read right. What I'm trying to say is that it is good they kept wade at guard and we'll see who ends up on the first team come Aug. 11.

Posted by: 4 skinz | July 31, 2007 6:51 PM

Don't worry. The Skins have a 3rd round pick next year, so we can trade for a backup running back to beef up the inactive list.

Posted by: groundhogdayguy | July 31, 2007 6:53 PM

Sit Portis.

For weeks.

Let him earn back his starting role from Betts once the season gets going and the carries matter. Portis has enough talent to play well on little practice and enough disinterst to get hurt in practice.

The best thing for the team and the player at this point is a few weeks off.

Posted by: mugamack | July 31, 2007 6:54 PM

Have they called Detroit yet to arrange a trade for T.J. Duckett?

Posted by: Thor | July 31, 2007 6:55 PM

Clinton really doesn't like practice.

Tendinitis flares up.

Could there be a connection?

I'm with you, although I will watch the pre-season games.

Posted by: TB | July 31, 2007 7:01 PM

Again...according to Sportsnet, Todd Wade will stay at left guard - the Skins have absolutely no plans for him to play left tackle.

Posted by: Lisa | July 31, 2007 7:09 PM

Donovan McNabb is now bald...and wearing a head band. He looks like an NBA player.

Posted by: Lisa | July 31, 2007 7:10 PM

I wonder how well that tendinitis excuse works - sorry boss I can't type up that report you need I have tendinitis

Posted by: David | July 31, 2007 7:17 PM

I think Portis just doesn't want to practice.

Posted by: Cindy | July 31, 2007 7:18 PM

Portis will be fine but we won't see much of him until the season starts I predict. I am interested to see what happens with Heyer, however I am really interested to see how L2 did in his first practice. Didn't get to see him in OTA's either so I'm excited to see him get on the field. Any word on how he practiced?

Posted by: SkinsfanSC | July 31, 2007 7:20 PM

In regards to the question of Jerseys from a few posts ago, I have Champ and LaVar. Yep, I'm a good luck charm.

This might surprise some people, but I also have a Redskins Whiskey flask! Hahaha

Posted by: kost52 | July 31, 2007 7:25 PM

SkinsfanSC, Laron was interviewed after practice....he said he was tough at first.....a lot different than at LSU...but that he was getting with it by the end of practice. Williams made him do 40 up downs....surprisingly enough, the other safeties joined in to help him...even Sean Taylor.

Posted by: Lisa | July 31, 2007 7:27 PM

SkinsfanSC - I aggre, I'd like to hear how LaRon went, did he look lost, or did he fit right in.

Posted by: kost52 | July 31, 2007 7:31 PM

Thanks Lisa!

Posted by: kost52 | July 31, 2007 7:43 PM

PREDICTION: Portis will be cut next year. Ladell will be the full time starter.

Wait... the other safeties did the up- downs with Landry? Nice to see players making an effort to bond.

Not quite the same thing as all of the Bengal receivers going out to California over the summer for 2 weeks to practice with Carson Palmer, but a start.

Buges was on the John Riggins show today and said the same thing. Also said that they were going to look at the other tackles before making a decision on their next move.

Posted by: CarlTheMadd | July 31, 2007 8:31 PM

Ok, I'm ready to throw up. The NFL Network is showing Cowboys Training Camp - being held at the Alamodome. There are so many people there it looks like an actual NFL game. Of course, Jerry Jones is front and center being interviewed by Deion Sanders. The man NEVER met a camera he does not like!

I think Portis just doesn't want to practice.

Posted by: Cindy | July 31, 2007 07:18 P

Portis was interviewed on channel 4 today and looked a bit wistfull when talking about Sammuels injury.

Posted by: CarlThe Madd | July 31, 2007 8:37 PM

i'm sure portis tendonitis is about as serious as TO's hamstring was last year. he better not break out a tour de france outfit and get on the stationary bike.

Posted by: Anonymous | July 31, 2007 8:42 PM

It would be nice if Deion could shut up for 2 minutes, or at least say something remotely related to what is happening on the field.

Posted by: SMACK | July 31, 2007 8:48 PM

A Riggins-esque move. Relax and don't play until it really matters.

Any info on how much Landry's new contract counts against the cap this year? Is there sufficient room to sign Cooley and maybe even The Reaper to long term deals?

Kost - Unofficially, my eye was ok an hour later. I just didn't feel like going to work.

I don't know who played. But I always watch when I get the chance.....

4-12 - WTF is going on with the tour?

"Wednesday, August 1, 2007; E02

German authorities said yesterday they have received documents from doping expert Werner Franke that he claims show Tour de France winner Alberto Contador was involved in doping.

Franke said he has documents from last year's Operation Puerto doping investigation in Spain that show Contador, a Spaniard who won the doping-marred Tour on Sunday, had taken HMG-Lepori as a testosterone booster and an asthma product called TGN.

"We can confirm we have received the documents, and they will be incorporated into procedures of the district attorney's office," Christian Brockert, spokesman for Germany's Federal Criminal Police Office, told the Associated Press.

Contador, who rides for the Discovery Channel team, missed the 2006 Tour when his former team, Liberty, was disqualified because he and four other riders -- plus the team director and doctor -- were allegedly linked to Operation Puerto. The Spanish doping investigation is one of the largest scandals in cycling history -- at least 50 riders are suspected of getting sophisticated drug services, including blood doping, from a Madrid clinic.

Contador said Saturday his name mistakenly turned up in the Puerto file.

"

Posted by: 4th | July 31, 2007 9:05 PM

The way things are going, I suggest we just let them all dope up for Le Tour and see who has the best ride + best doctor. There is really no way to recover from this scandal.

FYI, that was my unsigned post above at 9:04. My bad.

Randy Thomas must have missed his lunch...juicy? wtf???

"It's a big loss," Thomas said of Samuels' injury. "Especially during training camp, you want to keep everybody together. But the pro he is, he'll be back, he'll be ready for Miami. When he hollered real loud, like a girl, I thought it was real bad. He's so flexible, though, big and bendy and juicy."

And since I started it, I will finish it...

Flag on the play, blog misconduct on gregm;

you stated in your original post, that 'who even cares about soccer" and like me, many retorted that people do care.

Then somewhere along the way you got defensive and started backtracking. How you ask? B/c you started changing your arguement to say that more people care about football than soccer. Well, no one disputed that.

Then you started getting chippy and telling people to 'tell me i'm wrong'... well if you had stayed with your original argument then we all could say you were wrong. Instead you changed it so you wouldn't look wrong.

Look, I understand you trying to make a point, but one thing you will learn up here id that these (and I say these and not we b/c I do not self promote)people on the blog are sharp and we have written record of what you say.

Doubt you'll read back this far b/c by the time you troll tomorrow, Jasno would have posted 7 posts about football.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming. Goodnight blogizens

Posted by: Southeast Jerome | July 31, 2007 10:13 PM

I disagree with Cindy and I dunno about you all, but now I am prepared to panic. This is bad voodoo. If Portis was sandbagging, then St. Joe would be "bearing false witness" when he said Portis' knee "looked a little swollen." Gibbs withholds info, but he doesn't speak untruths. The analogy to Michael Jordan not paying attention to his recovery is apt. A hand or a shoulder -- you can work around that, but a bad wheel on a back is bad news.

Dogs go to heaven, even bitey dogs. This is a dog bites man story (more precisely, ghost dogs). And who was sitting next to Portis and giggling when #26 said dog fighting was no big deal? That would be Samuels. This is bad mojo. I'm joining AMTTS on gloom patrol for a little while.

Posted by: dcsween | July 31, 2007 10:14 PM

Probably I should not juxtapose where juxtaposition (SJK) may not be warranted, but is it pure coincidence Portis and Samuels are "down" at the same time a Michael Vick co-defendant pleads guilty and starts cooperating with the prosecution?

Yeah, I guess that is a coincidence.

Both Portis, little injection to swell the knee, and Samuels are in the Tidewater area helping Mike Vick find a new place to set up for more dog fights. Mike probably won't have anything to do for the next year or eight.
Portis...gone next year...baby!
Samuels...watch yourself...you may be with Clinton.

Posted by: Me in Rio | July 31, 2007 10:31 PM

Wow. It feels a bit like Philly in here.

Knee tendinitis is a big issue for a basketball or soccer player because it's aggravated by miles and miles of running. I'm sorry but even in your wildest dreams, CP doing miles and miles of running every weekend. And you've got a capable backup, right?

Everyone relax and take a deep breath...

Adam

I firmly believe that Gibbs is going back to the ame old tricks of the 80s...Acting like they are beat up and weak in areas. I just beleive that all this is to not over work or risk serious injury to key players....how weird is it...Chris and now Portis....looks fishy to me :)

Posted by: Leevi | July 31, 2007 10:55 PM

Good point Leevi.

Another thing is this dag gone NFL tries to keep us involved 24/7/365. But, we in this blog age are so amped, we get down too fast. Way too fast.

Disinformation is key right now.....

Posted by: 4th | July 31, 2007 11:03 PM

Gibbs said only that there was a little swelling. I haven't seen anyone quoted as saying Portis was hurting. Sounds to me like this is precautionary and nothing more. Just like they aren't pushing Marcus. This is all preventative and nothing to cause alarm.

We have a long way to go folks. Pace yourself.

Posted by: R. Bobby Hater | July 31, 2007 11:09 PM

Yeah people panic at the smallest things these days...Years ago before the media all over camps and the interent etc etc etc we would have never heard abot anything unless it was serious. It's no big deal...I'm not saying they are not hurt or dinged a little...But I do beleive after last year they are being cautious. In the old days camp was used to get players in shape. Now adays they are in shape when they arrive...so camps are allot shorter and as you have heard everyone thinks preseason should only be one game. That they don't need all the work as in the past to be ready...They work year round...If it was midseason...Protis would be playing this week....With all that in consideration...do you REALLY think these players are hurt that bad??? I DON'T....

Posted by: Leevi | July 31, 2007 11:12 PM

You guys are nuts....panicking over every little thing! After last season's injuries, it is totally understandable that the team is taking every precaution with the players (especially Portis) right now...during PRACTICE....not a game...not a game....PRACTICE, man.

Posted by: Lisa | July 31, 2007 11:16 PM

Yeah you're right Leevi, if Jansen was to break both thumbs in camp tomorrow, I'm sure he'd sit out and rest through TC, but during the season we know he'd play.

A little note about the Cowboys....

OK somebody PLEASE explain something to me....Is it me or do the Cowboys seem to be trying really freakin hard to self promote that they are going to be really good and nobody knows yet...kinda like a get ready world here we come! I find this very very funny. Lets look at this for what it is...

Mr. Bill leaves a bit late for them to hire a big time serious coach. They scramble a bit and hire Wade Phillips.....All of a sudden this guy is the cats meow...since when????? He has a 50% winning pct as a head coach with 2 playoff appearences and no victories...Hell this guy could not even win in Denver with Elway as his QB!!!! The Cowboys lost how many games down the stretch last season and barely made the playoffs and we know what happened there. This team has not won a playoff game in 11 years! And now with Jason Garret as the O. cord and wade Phillips as Head coach..they are going to take this team where Bill Parcells couldn't???? Are you kidding me???? LOL Geez man...what are they smokin? Like I said seems ol Jerry is really reaching with this one... or am I missing something?

Posted by: Leevi | July 31, 2007 11:52 PM

Well, that's unfortunate with Portis. Good thing we have Ladell.

Posted by: duncan | July 31, 2007 11:54 PM

Portis was not carted anywhere...just sitting out practice. They are taking every precaution with Portis, Thomas, and Washington.

Jasno,

Thanks for the post about Freddy Adu. But why Portugul? Sure Benefica is a storied team but I can't watch Super liga and I can watch even the Scottish league here. I mean there is so much soccer here even gregm might just have to watch.

This must be a spring board to the EPL or La liga.

Once again thanks. I would rather hear any football (futbol) news over anything with a puck, a slider, or a LaBron.

Posted by: bangkokben | August 1, 2007 1:47 AM

It's automatically done by the competition the night before our draft, so we don't really find out where we draft until the last minute.

As far as I know, we only use Draught in reference to Beer.

Here is the end of the world in Big D. OK, not really but misery loves company so here it is.

SAN ANTONIO (July 31, 2007) -- Dallas Cowboys receiver Terry Glenn will have arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, a decision that was made when Terrell Owens got a break from practice to rest his sore hamstring.

While an MRI showed no serious damage after Glenn hurt his knee in practice July 29, the decision was made to have the procedure after he kept having pain. He is expected to be out about two weeks.

"There's a little positiveness here because if there's a little something loose there, we can get it out," owner Jerry Jones said. "There was something loose, some little cartilage or something in the joint. They thought they'd get it out now. We don't think it's serious."

Jones said after practice that Glenn, the 33-year-old receiver going into his 12th NFL season, was in Dallas having surgery. The procedure was scheduled for today, but the team later said it was delayed and would be done Aug. 1.

Owens was at practice, but was on the field without shoulder pads or a helmet after being told by coach Wade Phillips to take it easy.

"He's not complaining about anything. There is some soreness; why not keep him out," Phillips said. "He's worked awfully hard and has done everything we've wanted and more."

Owens didn't respond to questions from reporters while walking off the field after practice.

"We just felt we needed to give him a day off. He's been working hard all week," receivers coach Ray Sherman said. "We needed to take care of him a little bit. He wanted to practice, but we felt that we needed to do that."

Asked if Owens would practice Aug. 1, when the Cowboys have two workouts scheduled, Phillips said, "Probably. Don't hold me to it."

Without Owens and Glenn, both 1,000-yard receivers last season, there was more time to work with quarterback Tony Romo on the practice field for Patrick Crayton and other young receivers like Sam Hurd and Austin Miles.

"It really isn't all bad, especially with the young receiver situation," Phillips said. "It gives them a chance to show what they can do. I think a couple of them are going to step up."

Glenn won't play in the preseason opener Aug. 9 against Indianapolis.

52 cyclists were named out the 144 athletes in Operacion Puerto. Out of the rest of the 92 tennis players and track athletes, NONE of their names have been released. So does this mean that all tennis players and track athletes are dopers???

People, every sport has it's dopers. Cycling is no worse than any of the others.

Stik wid da Skins please.

Posted by: charlie | August 1, 2007 5:55 AM

Oh yeah, if you think the majority of all cyclists are doping and you think that it's only a small problem in all other sports, you know nothing about doping in sports.

Happy B-day to the blog...

Flag on the play, on mugamack, 15 yard personal foul for 'sipping' beer...

Sorry, I never got that, I sip Port or a good cognac, I tend to 'down' beers as it takes more of them to get me drunk than my drink of choice, Jack Daniels, which I drink, or more accurately enjoy thoroughly and quite quickly.

I will try to be a stenographer for the mouth of the south... but he speaks quite quick so it might be choppy.

E: Do you know, you were going to the skins, or were the skins the only choice? S: He broke a deal to get released from the vikes, then agent called the skins and that was it. Saints came calling, trying to be happy, not about money so came back here

E: Never heard about you in Minny?
S: Over there is not like over here with the media. THey are not professional like DC.

S:Vikes fans compared to skins fans completely different. Here fans bleed 'maroon' and gold.

E: Was boat cruise overblown?
S: Yes, wasnt worse thing that happened while I was there. Injuries and loss of brother.

S: Rolls Royce that he had, he did not drive that. He had a friend to do that.

GOING VERY QUICK, TRYING TO HIT THE HIGHLIGHTS

S: Everybody welcomed him with open arms. When he came as a vike, people still cheered for me.

S: In love with the mind-frame of the team. How everybody feels, putting their mind to it. It was great this year b/c people are sleeping on the skins.

E: Will Shawn and Smoot be like Champ and Smoot?
S: It is not a forgone conclusion. But he has the confidence, that the team needed.

E: LaRon missed 6 practices, is it that big of a deal?
S: Everyone plays football. It matters and it doesnt. More so for the comraderie.

E: Players angry about his holdout
S: NFL is good at that. Players do not invlove themsleves in others financial matters.

kost,

What's your take on the quality of Australian swill these days? My impression is that it's become blah and aside from Cooper's and a few others, it's not much better that the pizz they serve us at, say, Busch Gardens.

4-12;

I am personally a Miller Lite man. For good beers I go Molson Ice. Beach beer is corona all the way. Bud products give me a headache no matter how many I drink.

Now, there might be a flag. Is he using it for beer pong? If it is for a drinking game of some sort I will let it slide. However, if he is sipping it, he might as well pee in his own mouth(SJK) ;)

Posted by: Zebra | August 1, 2007 8:45 AM

I am a Coors Light man myself.

Posted by: jm220 | August 1, 2007 8:49 AM

not good... so far our injuries have been samuels, thomas and portis... lets see 3 of our best players on offense.... lets hope none will be too serious...

Posted by: bethesdaboy | August 1, 2007 8:55 AM

Haha jm;

I know that must be a joke.

Posted by: Zebra | August 1, 2007 8:56 AM

First I read that jm220 drinks beer! Then the clarification arrives. Coors Light is not beer. Whew. That's a relief. My image of the man of steel (and wheatgrass) remains untarnished.

Posted by: dcsween | August 1, 2007 8:56 AM

Miller LIGHT? Coors LIGHT? I'm shocked. What kind of fans do the Redskins have these days?

Posted by: KK | August 1, 2007 8:57 AM

I just wanted to feel like one of the guys. LMGO Oh well.

Posted by: jm220 | August 1, 2007 8:58 AM

Smoot should have explained how Skins fans are more reactive (and reactionary) than other teams' fans, like the Vikings. Notice the quick reaction from fans here in response to my dire warnings of shamanistic bitey dog curses. REACTION (or course, the reaction was equal and opposite). I consider my overreaction last night to have served as blog valium. [You're welcome.]

After seasons of this, peeps HAVE to know that the purpose of training camps (or at least media coverage of it) is injuries. So far, as far as we know, the Skins have suffered no broken bones or soft tissue injuries requiring surgery. Jags lose their center with a broken angle. Glenn goes under the knife (a very small one, but still a knife) for camp ... Glenn ... who was Bledsoe's security blanket ... the Pukes' Moss. So far, Skins have been lucky.

In other bits, I read somewhere (Gary Fitz?) about how the undrafted rookie tight end picked up a couple/few days ago, Jack Nordin (pronounced nor-DEEN) is already lighting it up his FIRST day on the field. Mr. Nordin expresses his gratitude to Tyler Ecker's groin for his chance to shine.

Posted by: Zebra | August 1, 2007 9:08 AM

The only serious downside to Samuels' injury is the negative effect on Todd Wade, e.g., the timing, instinct, and synchronizing muscle memory with the guy to his left. Subbing for Captain Obvious here.

Q: Really, you never thought about buying something for your parents?

LL: OK, yes, I have, but why should I have to open my wallet just b/c I got picked at No. 6 when Dawan didn't do anything for them when he signed with the Ravens? You know what the chump got them for Christmas? Another stupid red tie and a rolling pin! Our mom doesn't even bake!

Posted by: dcsween | August 1, 2007 10:04 AM

Wow. Culpepper, McCown, Walter and Russell. Think the Raiders are a little paranoid about their QB situation this year?

Posted by: charlie | August 1, 2007 10:07 AM

can't get to worked up over some sprains, no one is out for the year and the guys in question are not irreplaceable we have depth at those positions.

for those who want to panic here are the players we can't lose for extended periods because the drop off is very very deep.

Campbell moss cooley griffin springs

Posted by: Old School | August 1, 2007 10:09 AM

charlie, I think the Raiders got what they were hoping for when they drafted Russell, specifically, Culpepper. He signed a one-year contract. Other than Al Davis and Kiffen, the two happiest people in Oakland right now are Culpepper and Russell. [McCown and Walter less so, but to date they have both demonstrated what they are capable of ... being a back up QB.]

Posted by: dcsween | August 1, 2007 10:11 AM

Old School, if they criteria you used for that list of "can't lose" players does not include Portis, then the list also should not include Moss, Cooley, or Griffin based on the reported TC performances of ARE, Yoder, and Golston/Montgomery, respectively.

I would agree, however, about the QB and #1 CB spots though.

[That said, I do think Portis and Samuels belong on that list!]

A big hurrah to David in a letter to Peter King.

KEEPING IT REAL. From David Floyd of North Carolina. "You are a great writer and I enjoy your columns on a regular basis. But I just have to ask you something. When the average American struggles on a daily basis to get by and faces real challenges daily, how is it one should look upon some of your musings? I mean, you've spoken of what a wonderful daughter or two you have, and you probably have just as wonderful of a wife. You live the life probably any man would dream of, covering the NFL and getting paid for it all the while. So when we see you complain about whichever Starbucks is nearby and the price of working out at a hotel gym center, and the cost of parking in Manhattan or hear any of the other rumblings which seem awfully miniscule to the average person trying to get by, what is one to think? Poor, poor pitiful Peter. How about this Peter? Every day you awake and look in the mirror, tell us how you hit your knees and thank your maker for gracing you with such a rich life."

Charlie,

I agree with you on the Peter King smackdown, but Peter also deserves credit for (a) publishing the smackdown and (b) a fairly gracious response:

"I'm really glad you wrote that and knocked me down a peg or two. I need to hear stuff like that sometimes. Thanks for the wakeup call. The reason I told the story about the airfare and parking fare is that I found the comparison insane and I thought that you might too."

Posted by: charlie | August 1, 2007 10:30 AM

yes, it's true that we can use the team name. BUT a. i don't want to anyway. cuz it is shamefully offensive. 3. I want a burgandy t-shirt that says "WASHINGTON" on it in gold.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 1, 2007 10:47 AM

I have been a loyal reader of this blog since day one, although I did not start posting until sometime after the season ended. Even now, I do not post very much. But I must say I thoroughly enjoy reading the blog and appreciate the great diversity of skins nation, or should I say skins world, since we have bloggers from all over this planet. It's like having friends in every corner of the world.

Because I am a full time telecommuter (it has its pros and cons, more pros than cons), I do not have any one to talk to about my favorite team (the people I "work" with are in NY and New England). This blog fills that need 100 times over. It also has filled the void between the end of the season and training camp. It has been just great.

In the early seventies, I spent two years and eight months in a small town in Texas, courtesy of the USN. I subscribed by mail to the Washington Post so that I could keep up with the hometown news and so that I could have a good newspaper to read. Because the delivery was delayed, I read the paper a week late. However, I read every skins article and column as soon as the paper arrived.

This is so much better.

Posted by: Mark (in 21132) | August 1, 2007 10:49 AM

dc

you seriously think that some one like todd yoder could fill in for cooley over the course of a season and give us what cooley can.

My point is a certain positions, rb and ol they have nfl game proven options (depth) at others they do not like TE and obviously QB.Again extended period not a game or two.

I feel overall our depth is better, hopefully we have a good year health wise so we don't need to test it

Posted by: Old School | August 1, 2007 10:52 AM

Know I haven't been around in a while and that this is going to be a very tardy comment, but; Stephon Heyer will make this team. I predicted this on a much earlier thread when he was signed. I'm a terps season tix holder and have seen many of his games including spring games. His technique is solid. He's rangey (sic) and big. His big issues are his knees.

Oh, I also predicted Hollenbach would be cut before camp started, just for a little cred.

Posted by: larry bud | August 1, 2007 10:52 AM

charlie, its all good. Its just that Art Monk should be in the Hall of Fame and Peter King was a big obstacle to that happening when he was in a position to help make it happen.

Posted by: dcsween | August 1, 2007 10:53 AM

larry bud, welcome back. Credit awarded.

You gotta love the straight talk from Joe Bugel:

"We have to build his lower body up. He worked out with Randy Thomas, and Randy's a maniac in the weight room. So [Heyer] is starting to get a little muscle structure in the legs. He's a load."

A load???? Really pulling your punches there, Joe.

Posted by: dcsween | August 1, 2007 10:56 AM

Yeah, I think Heyer was in rehab on his knees while he was playing. He usually wears braces on both knees and has a permanent screw in one. Kind of an impediment to lower body building. He is quick in spite of that though. He was always the lead blocker in the terps' option and pulling packages. The ravens got the other half of that tackle combo with Jared Gaither, also a beast but not as quick as Heyer.

If I'm right, Heyer was one of those guys who came out of High School as a TE, kind of like Samuels. He's tall, a little on the thin side for his height, actually. He was a notorious blocker. Tore some guys up pretty good when he pulled. He was a little weak when he had to block from a standing position. Lower body issues, no doubt. Still think he'll make the team.

He has some intangibles as well. He played through a good deal of pain and I had a buddy who knew him pretty well who said he was a locker room leader that had his priorities straight. He was supporting his mom, I think, throughout college.

Anywho, I'm spent for now.

Posted by: larry bud | August 1, 2007 11:06 AM

dc

i mean extended period, not a game or two... yoder couldn't give us the production we would get from cooley over say season, same with ARE he is not Moss.

I think overall we have better depth in lots of places, but like the rest of i would rather we not have to "test it"

Posted by: Old School | August 1, 2007 11:07 AM

"When Washington signed its first-round draft pick, LaRon Landry, to a five-year, $41.5 million deal that included $17.5 million, it became the most lucrative deal ever given to a safety."

This gives The Reaper the ammo to ask for an even bigger deal when it's his turn to re-sign. I get the feeling that we won't be able to keep him. Unless the cap goes up significantly next year, look for a long hold out or a trade comparable to the Portis/Bailey trade.

Posted by: Hmmm.... | August 1, 2007 11:36 AM

Could there be a connection?"

Yeah he's a whimp, plain and simple.

Posted by: Ray | August 1, 2007 11:39 AM

Reaper's going to have to improve his play this year if he wants to be paid like the best safety in the league.

But isn't Polamalu's deal bigger than Landry's?

Posted by: KK | August 1, 2007 11:42 AM

Sween--

What a small world! I think that Peter King wrote a few weeks back that Elsinore is his preferred swill, too! That is, when he can't find a Starbucks.

Posted by: KK | August 1, 2007 11:44 AM

Landry's deal is the biggest of ALL NFL Safeties and he hasn't even set foot on the field yet. Whay wouldn't Reaper ask for more?
