Run To The Hills - Fan Appreciation Day Is Off
Well, the weather out here at The Park is going bonkers- storms, lightning, bad scene all around. Cheerleaders huddled in the doorway next to the media room here, scrambling to run out to their cars in the rain, with the plastered on make-up going all over the place. The band is trying to get out of dodge and still keep its equipment dry.
So, as a result, Fan Appreciation Day is off. Everyone - save for the players and us media schlubs - is going home.
Should practice start at some point tonight - it was scheduled for 4 - it will be closed to the public. There were droves of fans lined up when I got here a few hours ago, but they were sent back to their cars a while back when the thunder got bad.
The team has a second Fan Appreciation Day set for Aug. 8, so that will be the only date for the event now.
LaRon Landry remains unsigned and doesn't appear he will take part today no matter how late this practice starts. It may end up being a day where they do some brief drills on the artificial surface if the weather lets up for a spell, then call it a day and head back to the dorms.
There is a morning and afternoon session already scheduled for Monday - both sessions will be closed to the public.

Darwin Walker was traded to the Bears? The same team that won't sign Lance Briggs? For an undisclosed draft pick?
Hmmmm do we smell trade bait for the Redskins? OR some other team? Perhaps Briggs AND Walker for ????
Interesting ... ???

So JLA,
What's your gut telling you about the Landry deal now? How long?
Posted by: disappointed | July 29, 2007 3:40 PM
periculum, where have you been? The Bears did make a deal with Briggs.

Jason.. two questions I'd love to see answered.
1. What is the stumbling block in the LARON contract?
2. Why are the skins not interested in RICE?
THANK YOU!

HB noted of Pretty Boy Lloyd:
"According to NFL.com, Lloyd suffered through the worst season for a starting receiver in the Super Bowl era."
And he is slotted number 3???
LOL
Posted by: disappointed | July 29, 2007 4:57 PM
Rando,
The skins should be trying to take a new approach to their team, a build for the future, long term, approach. Signing Rice does not help with that. We are not going to the Super Bowl this year, unless by pure luck. Why not see if we can find a player on the roster to become a leader on our line rather then go for a DE who has a big name in 2003. Rice is too old, too out of shape and too much money. I doubt Rice would want to sign for a vet-minimum.

Great image of the cheerleaders....what a shame!
I'm sure the LaRon contract will get done soon - at least I hope so.

Here is a list of our current DL I sorted by age. Odds are Daniels, Wynn, Griffin and Salave'a will all be out of here in 2 years, either cut or retirement. I think Carter will work out for us, okay he is not the second coming of Bruce Smith but I think we could keep him on the roster for the next few years and get solid production, so long as he is healthy, I expect at least one of the two 1st year DT's to work out, Goldston or Montgomery. I say give one of these other guys with 1-2 years a shot at the team.

Thanks for the post 35332. I agree. I'd love to sign RICE to a 1 or 2 year deal. We've been building for the future for years. The future is now. AS LONG AS we don't pay him to much money. Nothing more than 4 mil.
Posted by: RANDO | July 29, 2007 6:06 PM
Rando,
I think you disagree, I said we should not sign Rice, and that our DL should develope the young talent.
Posted by: 35332 | July 29, 2007 6:16 PM
The skins can go to the super bowl. The skins should perform their own pyhsical on Rice. If he will be healthy soon then sign him. He's a MAJOR upgrade over Wynn and Daniles.
The Bears got DT Walker for a 5th rounder. That is a steal. Now why didn't the skins trade for him. He's one of the dominent DT in the game.
Posted by: jason | July 29, 2007 6:36 PM
35332- If you have decided the Redskins truly have no chance to go to the Superbowl this year (which is typically the ultimate goal of the team each year), then why bother talking about any of this crap, lets wait until you think they have a chance.
There has to be some belief, somewhere, that is it possible before a single game is played. Otherwise, why bother? PS. Don't take any motivational speaking roles any time soon.

Jasno,
Why do the skins continually disappoint on fan appreciation day? Last year I took the day off work and took my son to a regular practice and only one of players was allowed out to sign or interact with fans, plus Gibbs, who was mobbed and we could not get through. We tried to go to the team website this year and ended up at an autograph convention in Chantilly, only to find out after paying the entry fee that you have to pay an additional $50 to $75 per item that you want Portis or Taylor to sign.
We prepared all weekend for the session on Sunday, my two sons getting Jerseys on, a few cards they wanted to get signed, everything is rained out with no provision for the rain, the make up day is the other fan day.
Why is the team forever not planning for its fans comfort and enjoyment? Why are we always crushed? Aggravating business this sport situation has become in Washington.
Posted by: Suburbia Dad- Dismayed | July 29, 2007 6:49 PM
Suburbia -- Agreed. They should be smart enough to have some sort of backup. Just putting CP and Moss in a room [with a roof] signing autographs would go a long ways to helping make fans who did make it out feel better. Grabbing some pizza and throwing a few passes to fans in some covered practice area would be even better. The Skins have enough QBs, don't they?
So is the artificial turf outside? Do the Skins not have a covered practice facility? If not, it's time to invest in one with a few rows of bleachers, I think.
Posted by: worstSeat | July 29, 2007 7:26 PM
I don't think the Skins made it rain. Though Dan Snyder does own that team of mad scientests, never know when they could develope a weather controle machine or a deathray on the moon aimed somewhere between Dallas and Ft. Worth, or the 50 foot vinnybot that shoots lazers out of the eyes that turn good players into bad.

Todd Yoder keeps getting mentioned for making plays on the http://www.redskins.com practice blog. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm he's a big target. 6-4, 250. but isn't cooley 6-4?

never mind. i just checked out todd yoder. he aint chris cooley...

Hoping for a Superbowl, is a big difference compaired to thinking you can get one, every team has a 3% chance of winning the big game right now. I am old fassion about my Redskin support, as long as they beat the Cowboys I am happy.

excerpt from http://www.redskins.com blog:
this is today around 6 pm...joe in quotes:
What about the status of unsigned rookie LaRon Landry? "I'm hoping any second. I know I've been saying that. I think we're getting closer and closer. Now I'd be disappointed if it weren't tonight. I keep moving it closer and closer."
don't you love it when joe does stuff like this. hee hee lol...
Posted by: dealer | July 29, 2007 8:10 PM
Suburbia, I got four autographs on fan appreciation day last year. There were plenty of players out there. I have no idea what you're talking about on that one.
There's nothing the 'Skins can do about the rain and lightning....anyone with a clue should know that's always a factor in training camp. Keeping fans out there in a major storm is not good policy and the 'Skins were smart to clear it out and wait for a better day.

this situation with Landry is sad.oh sure....it's a business. Are we talking about millions or just a few hundred thousands? The agent is playing this game because he owns the 5th and 6th pick.Clearly this is self interest on his behalf. And for the extra cash......look at the trade off. Most support that he must do what he gotta do.give me a break.First of all.....he should be in Sterling at a hotel waiting to drive in.second....he should be telling his agent.....hey man....I need to be there.....get this done.As a fan and I speak on the behalf of all skins fans......I'm hopeful that we NEVER have to pick in the top ten again. Not only because it is a reflection of our previous record, but also because these players don't truly have perspective and the NFL needs to adopt the NBA system. They are slotted and that's the deal boy. That said.....Get this thing done because the fans are eager to see what this guy truly has.old fart

Good God, I hope not. Marcus is one of three critical players on defense that they can ill-afford to lose. The others, in my opinion, are Griffin and Springs.
Posted by: Matt | July 29, 2007 9:55 PM
Landry will sign, the d-line is fine and Soupy will lead the charge. now is the time to embrace the next sleeper squad!

He is the kind of guy who would lay you out for asking that...And he will do fine when he signs. If he holds out next week, I got your back...
Posted by: Anonymous | July 29, 2007 10:09 PM
matt, i'd disagree with you slightly...the top three on defense are griff, springs and seantay. marcus is a good player, an excellent player but his position doesn't warrant that much importance. in other words if i was starting a defense i'd first build the line then the DBs and then the LBs. my experience is only as a fan.
also they have some depth at LBs. they got rocky and london. if all three are healthy then it's gravy.
Posted by: dealer | July 29, 2007 10:14 PM
re: the rainout
i along with my 3 year old too were disappointed about practice being cancelled. BUT it was pretty bad out there.
it wasn't the rain. it was the lightning that scared the hosts. even if they set up tents to accomodate the fans you'd still have people walking as much as 1/2 a mile in the rain and lightning to get from the cars to the tent.
and i for one am very very against an indoor practice facility. cowboys practice at indoor facility:). like gibbs i love the rain.
yes, it sucked.

Will be interesting to see whether the Skins get Landry for one of those prized six year deals (and whether they will have to pay a premium for it) or whether they will be allowed to get one of the cheaper five year deals. Looks like the agent is feeling the Arizona OT client should be easier (and thus more important) to figure out b/c the Browns already signed their OT to one of those six year deals ... and b/c Landry was the second defensive player drafted ... and Gaines Adams and Okoye both signed to six year deals (Jamaal Anderson who got picked btwn Landy and Okoye signed a five year deal).
Posted by: dcsween | July 29, 2007 10:56 PM
dealer, agreed. The addition of London was huge. Hopefully Rocky takes big strides this season. But Marcus is stout in coverage and a great pass rusher too.
I guess you can either way with saying ST or Marcus.

although "the future is now" has been an oft repeated mantra at The Park for the past . . . decade? I must disagree with 32553's contention that we are not going to the superbowl so we should build. for an organization like this one, winning anything of consequence (like a playoff game) is a big deal and a worthy objective in its own right. once we start winning some games things will start to fall into place.

also, I am no longer on the Skins season tix waiting list!

sichuan, you're right that there's no reason to give up on the season after the first half day of training camp... there are no teams without holes or questions. Even the Pats have an issue with their thrid-string tight end and a real lack of depth at trainer.
Congrats on the tickets, but it leads to a question -- does sichuan refer to your location, or are you right now in the middle of a tasty platter of #14 with white rice? 'Cause I'm thinking that the commute might be a challenge -- sure you can make the games, but with enough time to tailgate beforehand? I think not...
Posted by: cload and daggar | July 30, 2007 12:08 AM
C&D,
The Pats do have a problem at Corner if Asante doesn't play. However, they are solid at the front seven that you or I might be able to play corner for them.
Posted by: bangkokben | July 30, 2007 12:31 AM
sichuan is the current location and I will be watching the games on black market saterllite so Ma & Pa kettle will be going to the games in my stead. Luckily this is a lifetime contract . . . also, Im pretty sure I saw LaRon Landry eating dumplings in Peoples Park this morning.
Posted by: Skins in Sichuan | July 30, 2007 12:55 AM
The important thing is that you're Peking at the right time.
Wow I stayed up for that?

Redskins sign sixth pick in draft, LSU's Landry
By Len Pasquarelli

Updated: July 30, 2007, 1:40 AM ET
Working all through the day Sunday, the Washington Redskins were finally able to strike an agreement early Monday morning with first-round choice LaRon Landry of LSU, the sixth player selected overall in this year's draft.
The deal, negotiated by agent Joel Segal, came just shy of 1 a.m. Monday, and will be signed later in the day after both sides review the final document.
The five-year contract has a maximum value of $41.5 million and it includes $17.5 million in guarantees.

And when you click on the article, it says "The Bog Goes To Camp"
I'm guessing it's meant to say BLOG!
