Samuels Out A Month Or So
According to the Skins, hot off the email press:
An MRI taken on Redskins offensive tackle Chris Samuels tonight revealed an isolated grade 2 sprain of his right MCL.
The injury is expected to keep Samuels out for up to four weeks.
So we'll see if Fabini or Wade take the reps there.
Also, Landry signed his deal at 8 pm after passing his physical, so he's all set for Tuesday's practice.

Wow. Things seem a bit thin now, don't they? Dockery gone, Samuels and Thomas ailing. What seemed a strength within the course of one weekend, now looks like a major weakness. Funny league. Haha.

It's gotta be Wade moving in to cover at left tackle, right? The devil we know vs. the devil who just arrived from Dallas?
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 30, 2007 10:54 PM
Wouldn't moving Wade kinda kill the idea of using him at guard? I wouldn't think he could spare 4 weeks away from learning that position to play tackle when Samuels is projected to be back by, or soon after, the season opener.
Posted by: JustMe | July 30, 2007 10:59 PM
Just the antithesis of last year's "anything short of the Super Bowl...." Injury reports leaking out probably sound worse than the actual injuries. That way Skins don't embarrass themselves if they don't make it to the Big House.

Four weeks. All he needs is a big plate of Benchiladas and all will be well. Four weeks. I'm thankful it's just a sprain. Big bullet dodged.
It's a sign.

I hate to be DR. DOOM. But this is the beginning of the end. Todd will move over, which means that when CHRIS does come back, WADE will take half the season to adjust. BRUTAL.
Posted by: RANDO | July 30, 2007 11:11 PM
Why do you all think Wade is going to move over? I heard that Gibbs said he will not be moving Wade.
Posted by: Lisa | July 30, 2007 11:17 PM
They are NOT going to move Wade over...there is no point they have a back up to Chris...evryone is over analyzing the situation...I'm a Skins fan but I'm not in the Negative group that loves to look at things with such doom and gloom
Posted by: Leevi | July 30, 2007 11:17 PM
There's a chance Samuels might be back for the Miami game, why would we move Wade just for the pre-season?
Posted by: kost52 | July 30, 2007 11:20 PM
So it's definitely Fabini as placeholder at LT then?
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 30, 2007 11:21 PM
Sorry, I was just responding to the original post up here, "we'll see if Fabini or Wade take the reps there." It was Jasno, he started it!
C'mon, it's not like I know anything!
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 30, 2007 11:23 PM
If they still plan to use Wade at guard, it doesn't make sense to move him to left tackle just for the pre-season. If they anticipate that guard is where he'll play, they should have already had someone else in mind to be Samuels' back-up. While the injury sucks, this situation will provide a good opportunity for that someone to get plenty of reps and get (more) comfortable in the offense in the event that they are needed during the season.
I could see moving Wade if Samuels was going to be out half the season. Not for just the pre-season, though.
Posted by: JustMe | July 30, 2007 11:24 PM
I guess the underlying concern is the left and more critical side of our line being comprised of two new starters, even for the preseason... oh yeah, and the time lost for Samuels to develop chemistry with the dude playing to his immediate right.
But still, I'm inclined to agree with JustMe's hope that this is gonna be all right.
I didn't mean to be a chicken little, just honestly trying to figure out what this injury means for camp and preseason.

Grade II MCL Tear
Grade II injuries are also considered incomplete tears of the MCL. These patients may complain of instability when attempting to cut or pivot. The pain and swelling is more significant, and usually a period of 3-4 weeks of rest is necessary.

There's also a bright side to all this. All the extra 1st team time the replacement will get, whether it's Fabini or a young player, is only going to help them if Samuels is to go down later in the year.

dealer,
I was so glad I had a family thing on Sunday, otherwise I would have been in Ashburn with a disappointed kid too. I had to pick my child up and carry him away to stop him from fighting grown men at the Cowboys game last season. I imagine it would have been a repeat of that if we had gotten all the way there only for him to find out he wouldn't get to see The Reaper.
I don't think I'm going to make it until the end of the week or one of the days next week. For some reason, management has seemed intent on making me earn my salary lately. So, the evening practices this week don't look good for me. :-(

Blah, blah, blah. PLEASE. Ladies and ladies, please hang on to your panties! Reporting of injuries is the ONLY possible true, valid, verifiable news come out of TC. Is ALL of it true, valid, verifiable? Depends on who you ask...
Think back to last season. Skins had NO depth on the O-line and everybody and his cousin-in-common-law knew it. We are entering a season where valid "intelligence" makes the tens of Ks worth of difference. The Skins NEED to determine who their depth is. Randy, knee hurting? Sit back, show me your knee. Anybody up for a shot at RG? Chris! Get up slow, we have no idea how long it might take for a Pro-Bowl tackle to recover from something like a pile up. Any body want to step up and show us you can play #2 tackle?
I'm not saying this is an intentional fake out or fraud, but WHY put your known starter onto field if he feels like a sandwich, [hello Willie Roaf types[, (esp. given last preseason's folly on the #1 RB, when there are PLENTY of guys who MUST prove they can start (if called on) in the NFL? From a coaching standpoint, this is a no brainer. Please resume your seats and move along. Nothing to see here folks.

dcsween, you've introduced quite a conundrum in the specific question of the Simpsons movie spoiler threshold up here and the general issue of what to do with all the not-as-footbally stuff which has kept the blog on life support lo these many moons.
No suggestions from me as yet, though keeping the fresh non-football stuff at the tail end of the penultimate post (as soon as there's a *beep beep* on a given post, thereafter it's open season for anything) might work for a while.
But I do think after we get the "they're back!" euphoria out of our systems and sort out a few of the inevitable trolls and Jason-haters in our inimitable way, the blog will settle in and we'll see the same flow we saw late in the '06 season: HEAVY fubball towards the weekend, peaking the day after game day of course, with the rest of the week a mixed bag of fubball and other shtuff.

Not having a go Cliff, this is just a question for anyone who can answer it for me. Why is there a big difference between LT and RT? Jansen played RT last season for a left-handed QB, why is that any different to playing LT for a right-handed QB?
Posted by: kost52 | July 31, 2007 2:28 AM
Waking up to find out about Samuels is a big blow. Fortunately it is what it is. I remember when I was living in Miami and Jim Lachey blew out his knee in preseason and the local sports guy who happened to be a 'skins fan wrote off the season. I remember being pissed, but it was true - a crappy season.
So with all the positivity with the L2 signing, how could such a blow hit us? Well look no further than the doctor of doom himself, Ricky Booby. Oh, did I spell that wrong? I can't say I've missed his "realism." Truth be told he does have his points, but after catching up on the blog, reading his rants over the well documented shabingus of last season, I felt like after seeing a nice pink scar on my chest, I just pick at it until it oozed with fresh blood because I just plain missed the scab! SJK. Does this guy ever have a sunny day?
I know it would be stupid of anyone to blame C. Samuel's misfortune on Ricky Bobby - call me stupid.

I do miss Megskin. What happened to her? Do I have to send an asian asassin to take care of Mark Brunel to get her to post?
Posted by: stupid | July 31, 2007 3:01 AM
1993, Jim Lachey tears up ACL in preseason. 'Skins go 4-12, Dallas goes 12-4 and wins the Super Bowl for the second year in a row. Pettibone tried to introduce the west coast offense that year and was then replaced by the Cowboy's offensive co-ordinator.
[Bangkokben's scar is now a festering mixture of blood and green puss]
Bangkokben: Stupid, bury the past. Leave it there. Move on.
Stupid: I'd rather reflect on it a little more and blame Ricky Bobby for all negative things.

BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Brady Quinn missed his fourth day of training camp Monday in a contract holdout that shows no signs of ending anytime soon for the first-round draft pick.
Quinn, who figures to compete for the starting job with Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson, has missed six practices so far.
Browns general manager Phil Savage has been in negotiations with Quinn's agent, Tom Condon, but the team said there was nothing new to report.
"I'm glad we've got the other guys out there," Savage said. "If anything, it's given Charlie and Derek the chance to get more reps, and that's a positive."
Savage characterized talks with Condon as "in the same neighborhood, but not on the same street."
A four-year starter at Notre Dame, Quinn was expected to be taken in the first 10 picks in April's draft. However, he slipped to No. 22, where the Browns nabbed him after trading a first-round pick in 2008 to the Dallas Cowboys.
Condon could be trying to get his client money in line with a top 10 selection, something the Browns already had to do to sign left tackle Joe Thomas, the No. 3 overall pick, who signed a five-year $42 million deal last week that included $23 million in guaranteed money.
With the exception of Quinn, all of Condon's picks in the first two rounds are in their respective camps.
Quinn also missed the club's rookie orientation program last week. Frye understands the importance of getting to camp as soon as possible.
"You just want to get here and build relationships with guys," Frye said. "This is the hardest part of the season, being in training camp. You just got to be optimistic and when you get here, you got to learn fast."

25. Panthers Jon Beason, LB

As I was saying in the previous post, we aren't the only team with Pre-season injuries. Frank Gore has broken his hand and will miss the pre-season. That'll be interesting, with Norv at the Chargers, the 49ers have a new OC, and now their best player is missing.
Posted by: kost52 | July 31, 2007 4:13 AM
Kost,
As far as your question re the right and left tackle, your RT traditionally is a better run blocker than a pass blocker thus plays on the right and not on the blindside of the QB. Teams often run right more often, but this could be a chicken or egg thing.
Your point is well taken about Jon playing the blindside for Brunel but guys who have developed long habit patterns playing one side often stay there. This seems like something easily corrected but is seldom done.
I can drive on both sides of the road with little consequence - right in Ashburn, left in Bangkok - so I think switching sides could be done but what do I know?
I blame Ricky Bobby for Samuels injury.

Here's what some chump from Yahoo says about the 'skins and 'boys:
VINNIE IYER'S TAKE
Poor investments in the nation's capital have damaged the team's chances of winning. Unless it can successfully lobby to get out of one of the NFL's toughest divisions, the struggles will continue.
Prediction: 5-11 (fourth in the NFC East).
Parcells laid the foundation for both Romo and the 3-4 defense to grow, so Phillips is well positioned to make the silver star shine much brighter this season. Prediction: 13-3 (first in the NFC East).
If the Cowboys go 13-3 I'll eat my head.
Posted by: stupid | July 31, 2007 4:47 AM
Thanks Bangkokben (I'm not calling you stupid!)that's about what I thought.
Majority of QB's are Right-handed so, the left tackle is more important because he protects the blind side on most occasions. The once a guy 'grows up' as a LT, he gets a Zoolander complex and can't go right.
Which makes me wonder, in a training camp, and you're trying to develop young players, and get some depth, wouldn't it be a good idea to train them to be bi-tackles (they go both ways). That way, if an injury occurs to one of your starting tackles, it doesn't matter which one goes down, because you have your depth regardless.
Posted by: kost52 | July 31, 2007 4:55 AM
I also read Don Pierson's "predictions" for this season. He recaps what we know about the 'skins and then predicts that they will be fourth in the division. He also predicts that all the 2005 division winners in the NFC will remain division winners. Way to go out on limb. Do you have a sack? Of course the last time this happened was... a long time ago.
Don Pierson writes regularly for MSNBC.com and covers the NFL for the Chicago Tribune. His "Ask the Expert" column runs every Wednesday. For more of Pierson's work, visit http://www.chicagosports.com/.
He's also a spineless writer that has no idea about the NFL.
Posted by: stupid | July 31, 2007 4:58 AM
Previous post should read 2006 division winners.
I take it back. Don Pierson, by predicting that last year's division winners in the NFC would again be division champs this year proves that he has indeed a big pair. Not since 1978 has ALL of the division winners in the NFC recaptured the division crowns when the Cowboys, Vikings and Rams did it for the third year in a row.
Posted by: stupid | July 31, 2007 5:16 AM
Kost,
I understand your thoughts about the tackle. Generally football coaches want continuity. There often is one guy on the line who can't start but could play a number of positions(T,G, maybe C) - both sides. This was why Ray Brown was so important to the 2005 team.
Another thing to note about playing the line is its complexity. Depending on what the defense does often changes the blocking assignment in both run and pass situations. Knowing too much can mix up younger players.
Posted by: bangkokben | July 31, 2007 5:24 AM
Since the realignment to four divisions, here are the division winners:
2006 Eagles Bears Saints Seahawks
2005 Giants Bears Bucs Seahawks
2004 Eagles Packers Falcons Seahawks
2003 Eagles Packers Panthers Rams
2002 Eagles Packers Bucs 49ers
So way to go Don. By playing the odds, you correctly picked two of the divisions winners this year. The question is: which two?
My money would be on Saints and Bears.

From the News Star
Wide receiver David Patten owns three Super Rings, all won with the New England Patriots and is now vying for a roster spot with the New Orleans Saints.
If early practices are any indication, he'll win one. Patten was one of the most impressive performers at any position in Friday and Saturday drills.
"He's going to contribute and compete," Saints coach Sean Payton said of Patten, who turned 33 last week and will be in his 11th NFL season.
Patten is by far the most experienced of an extremely young group of wide receivers. He is the only one of the 11 in camp who has more than three years of pro football experience.
Patten has played in only 14 games over the past two seasons with the Washington Redskins, but he has shown little rust thus far. Asked after Saturday afternoon's practice if he thought he still has what it takes to help the Saints, he replied, "Without a doubt."
I think I might have a fantasy team this year of only former 'skins. It should suck, but then again.

Ask Coach Gibbs when he is making the announcement his NASCAR team will be fielding Toyotas next year? It will throw him off and the expression on his face will be priceless. Now a more important question is how to Lindsay Czarniak's legs look in shorts and does Joe Bugel still get a woody everytime he see her. He pressed all the wrinkles out his shorts or pants everytime she interviews him.

Kost,
What do you know about form AFL player Saverio Rocca? Sounds like a distant relative to JLC - he aparently is the punter competition in Eagles camp.
Posted by: bangkokben | July 31, 2007 7:26 AM
You guys are hilarious. I love JLC's blog, as it's a great place for information, as well as a great place to vent. Call it my "serenity now" forum.
For those of you that say I'm completely "doom and gloom", I actually have a lot of hope for this year's team. If ALL goes right, I'll say 9-7, possibly 10-6, with a shot at the wild card.
It's just so hard not to look at the reality of the situation sometimes (okay, most of the time), which includes 16-17 years of horror, minus 2 seasons. Compound that with Dan Synder and his "fan friendly" approach to everything he does, and it makes it terribly hard to be optimistic. But believe it or not, I am every year. Again, I just find it hard not to look at the situation and realize that it didn't have to be this way the last 2 decades. We aren't Cardinals fans, but that is the situation we've been put in for 2 decades. Reality folks.

bankokben - I've been preaching about Sav Rocca and Australian Punters all off-season. The only thing which may have stopped him from being in the NFL is the adjustment to the different shaped ball, and from all accounts he's done just fine. He'll win the job at Philly, if we're not happy with Frosty the Snowman, Dirk "Digler" Johnston will be on the market soon.

Posted by: kost52 | July 31, 2007 8:32 AM
Kost,
As far as Rocca, how far can he kick it. It hasn't been since the beginnings of ESPN that I've watched and AFL game so what does he have to work on - other than the shape of the ball? Is catching it an issue, hangtime - soccer goalkeepers can punt far but the trajectory is a lot lower, what about technique? Don't you kick it a bit closer to the ground or is that rugby?
Posted by: bangkokben | July 31, 2007 8:37 AM
bangkokben - That's rugby. The biggest adjustment is the shape of the ball. An Aussie Rules football is a bit rounder on the ends, so there is a bigger 'sweet spot'. He is a massive kick of a football. These are some highlights of Sav and his brother Anthony, who will be in the NFL in the next 2-3 years. Sav is #36, the arc you can see on the ground, is at 50m out from the goal posts, so you can see that he is routinely kicking the ball 70-80 metres.

Ricky Bobby,
I figured you had a sense of humor. I'm with you on the time frame with Samuel's injury. 4 weeks for a Brett Farve injury is probably a day and a half while for any Redskin player you can pretty much double it. Should I mention S. Springs, C. Portis, or L. Arrington? Hell,(SJK)did I mention M. Barrow? When was the last time a Redskin came back from injury early completely healed? Help me out. I need some hope.

Seriously, take Smoot's appreciation for grandmothers and multiply that by a billion forty-three and got close to the same feelings the Thai people have toward their monarch.

But seriously, the NBA has caught on to the European basketballers, when are NFL teams going to realise that if you want to find a punter, you'll not only get him here, but you'll get him cheap!

From footballoutsiders interesting take on ranking the 'skins LB's.
14. Washington Redskins (18)
According to our metrics, Washington's defense was the NFL's worst in 2006, but the problems were primarily with the linemen and defensive backs. Strong-side linebacker Marcus Washington was a bright spot for the Redskins, finishing seventh in the NFL in Success Rate against the pass. Lemar Marshall was decent in the middle last year, but his spot has been taken by London Fletcher-Baker, who led Washington defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' squad when Williams coached the Bills. Fletcher-Baker is a superlative player; he led the NFL in Defeats with 40 and finished fourth in Stop Rate against the run. He's never missed a game in his nine-year career. The hope is that second-year man Rocky McIntosh will mature into a full-time starter on the weak side. If that happens, the Redskins will have a great group of starters and quality depth.

Anyway, I better head to bed before Redcoat tells me off for another late night! hahaha

Great news on Samuels. Now Fabini better at least hold it down somewhat and not get Campbell killed in the preseason.

Kost it's Singapore with the gum. We love มันฟรัง.
Some hope from Football Outsiders about our secondary.
14. Washington (2006 Rank: 7)
This wouldn't be the rank of the Redskins' secondary based on performance in 2006, but we're not ranking based on 2006; we're ranking based on expectations for 2007. Shawn Springs was one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL in 2005, and the injuries that cost him most of last season were the beginning of a cascade of injuries that destroyed the Washington defense. If Springs can play again this year -- and he is cleared for training camp -- this unit will be much better. Carlos Rogers is fine and getting better. Kenny Wright was bad, Mike Rumph was worse, and now both are gone. The Redskins are hoping Fred Smoot can capture past glories now that he has returned to Washington, and he'll have to start if Springs can't go at any point. At safety, the Redskins have the fifth overall pick from 2004, Sean Taylor, and the sixth overall pick from the most recent draft, LaRon Landry. The only problem here is that the two have similar strengths and weaknesses, and the Redskins have to figure out the best way to use them together.
This goes past just the secondary, but Washington's 2007 defense will not be anywhere near as bad as it was last year. The 2006 Redskins had the worst third-down pass defense we've tracked in our 11 years of play-by-play breakdown, and when defense on third down is much worse than defense on first and second down, that almost always means a big improvement the following season.
Posted by: bangkokben | July 31, 2007 9:19 AM
Some reality from Football Outsiders about the D-line. Ranked 26
The Redskins had the worst pass rush in all of the NFL a year ago. Based on last year's play alone, the Redskins maybe deserve to be last. Still, these players have more talent. Cornelius Griffin is a fine player at defensive tackle, but he has never matched the level he displayed in 2004. Andre Carter, despite a sizable contract, is merely an adequate defensive end. Phillip Daniels is now 34 years old and no longer a productive player. The one hope for the unit is the continued development of Kedric Golston, who was impressive at times as a rookie. Still, this is an aging unit whose best days are behind them.
Posted by: stupid | July 31, 2007 9:22 AM
the defensive backfield has 4 top ten picks... fletcher can shut down the run with griffin in front of him... I agree the defensive line is the weak link but could be adequate if they stay healthy... offense finished strong last year, see NY giants and Rams and New Orleans games...all 11 starters were here last year... campbell will have gained one more year of experience and portis and moss will hopefully be healthy all year.... if the line can stay healthy we will be ok on offense, possibly dominant.... We cannot suffer any injuries to key players such as taylor, springs, griffin, washington, moss, portis, thomas, jansen, and samuels. Then again what team in the NFL could other than San Diego or Indianapolis or New England.... 10-6 not out of the question...neither is 6-10 if they suffer injuries...yesterday was not a good start with Samuel getting hurt...
Posted by: bethesdaboy | July 31, 2007 9:30 AM
the article about the defense confirms my feeling that they will rebound this season..just by subtracting guys who could not play (holdman and arch, rumph and wright) moving marshall, the players and coaches have more confidence in the group they have put together and are going to let it fly.
its all about the offense.

stupid,
Yeah, I tend to go for the dramatic most of the time in an attempt to get a few laughs. That's just the way I am.
The news on Samuels is encouraging to say the least. He certainly isn't deserving of top 2/3 tackle money like he gets, but he isn't some terrible slouch either, especially when you factor in our lack of depth.
I know this is unrealistic, but I honestly wouldn't mind if they focused on conditioning for most of camp and avoided any kind of tackling, blocking, or pass rush situations. These guys are professionals and should know how to do that by now. Focus on timing (especially for QB's), technique, positioning and coverages, and conditioning, and let the contact come in scrimmages and pre-season minutes. I know this is football, but it's scary to think your team's season could be over in late July/early August when it could have been avoided. Think about Indy without Peyton, the Bolts without Tomlinson, and us without Brandon Lloyd... oh wait.

Washington Redskins 2004 season Preview
From Curtis Gray - Washington Redskins Correspondent
(Continued from Page 2)
Jul 26 2004
Something Old, Something New (page 3)
Going into the season, the DL still appears to have some holes, a legitimate pass rusher being the most obvious, so there will be a lot of attention paid here. Gregg Williams proved last year with the Bills that he can craft a powerful defense without a dominating line, but he will be hard-pressed to repeat that success this year.
"SAME OL SONG"
Folks, all the D-line needs is just to hold their ground, The linebackers and Secondary are a much better unit than in 04. This will be a special year if the "O" can score so please dont hate what you dont understand! Grilliams "D" is going to ROCK this year.

as far as the injury to samuels ... it hurts us from a continuity standpoint the group together is better than the individual parts, so thomas and smauels being out not getting reps together durring camp... you just have to hope these injuries don't linger get it over with now, rest and be ready to go
Posted by: Old School | July 31, 2007 9:49 AM
RB
agree on smauels, his pro bowl rep is larger than his play ... good not great, but again our line as awhole is a strength, not the individuals.

If Samuels was a 2nd or 3rd round pick, we would all be ticked that he doesn't get the pub he deserves. Instead he was picked 3rd in the entire draft and we expect perfection. Dude is solid. LT is maybe to 2nd most position on the offense and we have a guy who is real good. Defenitely top 10. That position is a high paid position. Partly because it near impossible to replace it. It absolutely breaks the bank. He is worth every penny we pay him. In 2005 he was the 15th highest paid tackle. You know who was 2nd? Davis - the clown who just signed with the Cowboys as a guard.

Left tackle Chris Samuels suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee during Monday's practice and he will be sidelined up to four weeks.
Samuels underwent an MRI on Monday evening and it was determined that he has an isolated grade 2 sprain of his right MCL.
The injury occurred late in practice when a lineman inadvertently rolled over Samuels' leg.
After practice, Samuels walked out of Redskins Park towards the team bus wearing a brace around his right knee.
"It's just a sprain," Samuels said. "I think I'm okay. I didn't feel anything pop, but it was definitely my MCL."
Samuels will likely be sidelined most of preseason. He could be available for the Redskins' preseason finale against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 30.
It's likely that coaches will be cautious with Samuels's injury until the regular season opener on Sept. 9.
Samuels said that when the injury initially happened, his first thought was that his season was over before it started.
"But the good Lord blessed me and I know that I'm fine," he said.
Head coach Joe Gibbs said that he is unlikely to move left guard Todd Wade back to tackle to replace Samuels in the lineup.
It's possible that reserve lineman Jason Fabini, who has played mostly tackle in his 10-year career, could step in for Samuels. Fabini has lined up at guard since signing with the Redskins in March.

To quote Ricky Bobby - "Hang on Baby Jesus it's going to get bumpy."
If you're super duper worried about the Samuels injury start burning the sage and sacrificing the tofurkey.
It sucks but I'd rather have him rest it now and be ready for late preseason and the season opener then go back too soon and end up with a CP situation like last year.

The way I figure it we're not expected to do anything good so all we hamsters can do is start foaming at the mouth with insane certainty that we are going to blow up all expectations and hope that the team feels and acts the same way.
Sure we could lose more games than we did last season but not many more and so really we can't go down, we can only go up up up.

The talk about Bangkok and Thailand's monarch reminds me of the single greatest billboard I've ever seen...in Bangkok, near the American Embassy if I recall, was a big yellow sign with a picture of the King. To the right, in big, huge, massive bold letters was the caption: "The Greatest King Ever".
Gotta love that.

If 'Skins fans have learned anything in the "Mr." Snyder era, it's that holding the lowest possible expectations for the team's performance is probably not a bad idea.
I find it amusing that 'Skins fans still get all worked up over this franchise. The glory days are over a decade away. Some of you have kids who weren't even born the last time this team was remotely consistent. Heck, some of you posting here during the offseason weren't even born the last time this team was remotely consistent.
The 'Skins are the Arizona Cardinals of the east coast. The last 15 years have proven that much.
Just relax, wait until they start playing the games for real, and start dreaming about what life would be like had our beloved team a real front office with a real master plan and a real knack for evaluating talent.

Existential question: if you remove a friend from Facebook, can you also remove the memories of said friend from your head just as easily? I just deleted my ex (who pulled a Sloan on me and casually mentioned that she was dating someone else). I'm approximately 13 years too old to be taking this Facebook thing seriously, I think...
Back to your regularly scheduled venting...

Re-reading the nonsense I posted about Samuels last night (I was BUI), I still think there is no real reason for concern. Samuels has the starter spot ready and warm for him whenever he feels like it. Multi-year vets, esp. Pro Bowl versions, and really esp. O-linemen, can safely get a bye on the brutality that is training camp. Seems like every year there are one or two solid starter vet O-linemen who sandbag on whether they want to retire, sit out camp, and then return to the game after the miserable part is over. I'm not saying that Samuels is sandbagging, but even if he just got a scare ... even if it doesn't even rise to the level of a "mild" sprain ... sitting him out for the rest camp is a no-brainer. He is a gamer and will be fine when we need him. This is actually a fortuitous opportunity for evaluation and preparation of the depth on the roster.
The Simpsons Movie. Last night, someone asked me to rate it on a scale from 1 to 10. I had to respond with a question, "Rate it as a movie or rate it as an episode?" [Hint: Rates VERY high as an episode, not as high as a movie.]

Difference between us and the cards
A. We have 3 super bowls
B. I beleive we have been to the playoffs twice since the cards
C. Our owner is bad but at least he is friends with tom and katie and owns an amusement park so he can go on rollercoasters anytime he wants since he looks like a little kid every time the skins win jumping up and down.

Diddy, one of my fave photos in Thailand was of the King posing with the other King (Elvis). I'm a little hungover so let's just assume some light ridicule in your direction about Facebook. [Also, what is "Sloan"? Is that like "its not you, its me"?]
When are we going to hear about the legs? Are Suisham and Frost even in camp yet? What do they do when everyone else is practicing? Isn't camp competition necessary to get "the edge"? I see they cut Frederickson to make room for a new undrafted rookie TE.

"The Redskins had the worst pass rush in all of the NFL a year ago. Based on last year's play alone, the Redskins maybe deserve to be last."
I think its all about injuries and depth. Noting that Superbowl runner up Chicago picked up Darren Walker from Buffalo and signed Briggs to a 1 yr.
I think many look at the defensive backfield somewhat different from G. Williams and J. Gibbs. Springs thinks he will start but I doubt that will happen. I suspect that as groin and hamstring injuries creep back in you will see him playing the nickel. Smoot was brought back to start. If he can prove he's up to it. The same is true for Rogers. Springs comes in to start only when they falter. Macklin, Jurevetius (if he has recovered from injuries) seem competent backups on paper.
Linebacking should be much, much better and there is depth. Which is why you are now seeing more 3-4-4 schemes in practice. Probably more like the old Miami 56 defense. Where Washington is a pass rusher, but could also drop back. In that sort of scheme you would find Griffin, Montgomery/Golston, and Carter lining up. Injuries on the line could be crippling but the brain-trust have decided its better to wait for more draft picks than to do something about this now. That is probably a good choice.
In the end its all about injuries or lack thereof. The depth just isn't what you really need it to be. Injuries will determine whether they have a good season on defense or not.

There used to be a good little Thai place in Leesburg VA which had a huge blown-up pic of King Bhumibol on the back wall... just him in plain dress, sitting down stirring food in a wok. (Apparently he's quite the cook, on top of all the other great stuff about him, hence this picture's appropriateness for a restaurant wall.) It was such simple understated elegance.
I wanted to make a copy of this pic for my kitchen wall, but for some reason they didn't let me.

I have this great black & white picture of the King and Queen walking the beach sometime in the 50's. They're walking close together but not touching - inappropiate for the opposite sex in public. In the background are two security guards walking hand in hand about 25 meters behind them. Perfectly OK for persons of the same sex to do this.

Training camp is not looking promising so far.

It just sucks that he's going to miss the time to gel with Wade on the left side -- that's almost as important as missing a regular season game. Hopefully he can at least get back to practice in 2 or 3 weeks so they can get that chemistry going, which is so vital to solid O-Line play.

My biggest concern about the upcoming season isn't the secondary, or the d-line, or if Clinton Portis returns to his costume-wearing form. It's the offensive line.
Think about it-- what made Mark Rypien so successful? What has been the key to most Super Bowl-bound Skins? Hogs. An O-Line that can give our QB all day long to pass, or our RB an opening to tear up the gut. It seems like we don't have that this year, and Samuels' injury worries me all the more.
Does anyone else feel like this is a big weakness now?
I'm looking ahead to the draft, where some college prospects could develop into some nice hogs.

Hogs are skill players.
They must be big, they must be quick, they must be strong, they must be fast, and they must be smart. And they must work as a team.
With the rule book tipping things in favor of the offense, and with a salary cap, building a beastly offensive line is the foundation for success.

Is the crazy tatoo guy in the TC photos a peeplogger on RI?
That is indeed a "fanatic". He saving a spot for when Monk gets in. . . .I hope he can ink it in soon.
Looking at the photos of TC yeah okay there is a part of me that would go even if it were a million degrees.

I wonder when J Russell is going to sign in Oakland. Talk about having a whole franchise on your shoulders.
Considering who the QBs on the Raiders roster are I predict Russell will be playing by game 2 at the latest even if he misses half of camp.

My only dream is that it is Napolean, Vinny, or one of his henchmen down at Six Flags, I mean Redskin Park.
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | July 31, 2007 01:06 PM
Come on RB I dont think Vinny can read. That would best explain why the man does what he does.
Do we ever have any players, coaches or FO guys reading this site?

Just adding to 100k - Oakland opens with Detroit so it's the #1 v. #2 and both are holdouts.
By the way whoever cried for Vinny to do something up above please don't cause he just might and we'll end up with gawd knows what.

We have some young guys. Let em get the reps, Samuels is now 30 and we need to be grooming a predicessor to take the spot in 2-4 years. I know many of these guys will not work out but we should still give em a shot. Pucillo was at Auburn with JC for a while I am guessing. Does anyone know how they played together? What about this UMD kid on the list, anyone see any Terps games? In Pre-season and practice these are the guys I want to see taking on the load, not portis or any of our pro bowl guys.

Nevermind just answered my own question.
Pacman hasn't been convicted yet right?
So why is the NAACP backing Vick on the basis of "innocent until proven guilty" but not Jones?
(Just trying to create side conversation while we wait for next Skins hit.)
Posted by: sfskin | July 31, 2007 1:23 PM
Ricky Bobby is a true skins fan, just of the gloom and doom variety.
I'm taking my 2 year old to training camp today and couldn't be more excited by his excitement.
I'm still waiting for chris Larry to invent the FJK (sjk).
Posted by: WrongDog | July 31, 2007 1:23 PM
4th - sorry my question wasn't clear I meant did the league suspend Pacman or did just the Titans suspend him (although I guess the league would have to be involved).
Anyhoo I spent the energy and time of 10 seconds looking it up and found the answer.

Okay here is a topic to eat up the tally.
What Skins jerseys do people have, how many jerseys does it take to make someone a super skins fan? for self purchaces does anyone here prefer home vs away?
Personally I have 2
1: 2005 home custom jersey with my own name and the no. 13
1, 70th Aniv. Throwback-- Cooley home
I don't see the point in buying away jerseys, the team color is always going to be Burgundy for me
PS, They have a Clinton Portis jersey now with the tight sleves

Do we think or care anything about Troy Smith in B'more? McNair is on his last legs and the Kyle Boller experiment hasn't gone well. Geez Billick (sp?) is not much of a QB evaluator
I figure Jasno has the purple and black in his veins somewhere so must have some feeling.
Posted by: sfskin | July 31, 2007 1:28 PM
From the other paper across town:
- "You can only learn so much watching film and standing on the sideline getting mental reps," Bramlet said. "Playing well over there helped my confidence. It helped that my offensive coordinator in Hamburg, Ron Hudson, had worked with Coach Saunders in Kansas City.
- "I had a chance to sign with a couple of other teams, but the Redskins went out on a limb when they drafted me because I was pretty much unknown," Lefotu said. "I didn't have any bitterness towards the Redskins when I got cut. It's good to be back. And it helps that I know the offense and that my offensive line coach in Europe, Tom Lovat, worked with coach [Joe] Bugel in Arizona. ..."
Doesn't this make it look like getting to go to NFL Europe was like getting an apple from the teacher (who was sending you to train under one of THEIR jedi knights)?
Posted by: dcsween | July 31, 2007 1:28 PM
On Rome is burning yesterday they mentioned how Kobe's jersey did not get yanked. Ray Lewis' jersey did not. So they were suggesting a little unfairness.
The question became is it b/c Vick is most likely going down for this?
Also, sfskin, that tattoo guy is on Elliot in the Morning on DC101... he is actually crazy. But I digress. And I think he left two spaces, Monk and Green.

35332, when Gibbs came back I retired my beat-up old #28 burgundy replica and bought a custom white jersey with #44 Riggins. It's not exactly what Riggo wore for 70 Chip, but it's close enough for me (this was before the Riggo throwbacks were available for purcha$e at redskins.store).
I only have one jersey in the closet at a time since I have so few opportunities (game day and RI meet-ups) to wear the colors.
We gonna have a throwback uni this season or just the patch? The patch alone would be kind of lame, IMO. But they'd already be selling the new throwbacks if we had one, right?
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | July 31, 2007 1:33 PM
sfskin, Troy Smith got shafted when drafted for want of 2 inches in height. He will be a starter -- and a good one -- for a long time. He just needs one season under McNair and he will be ready for prime time. Ravens (specifically Ozzie Newsome) were not stupid to pick this HEISMAN TROPHY winner in the FIFTH round.
Posted by: dcsween | July 31, 2007 1:34 PM
Lastly,
NFL network did a special on the HOF sunday, and mentioned that Monk should be in and that it is rediculous that he is not.
They listed all the players before and after him who are in that did not have the stats he did.
Its small but it is progress.

ArtMonkToTheSticks was wearing a Skins polo shirt last week in the NYC, and while we were sitting on a sidewalk patio a young woman walking by hollered out that she loves the Redskins.
Stumped, Willie and I also met a young lady Skins fan the last time we were out for beers.

I have no clue whats up with the 75 aniv. thing. We 180ed this year with the Eagles when it came to a new uniform, they made their big deal about theirs, it was crap, and we were quiet. Nothing has been said officially, the team is only selling the patched uniforms. I agree though LAME if thats all we do. I would rather us do a Uniform through the ages thing. 1 game in every old uniform... minus the lether head gear.
Posted by: 35332 | July 31, 2007 1:38 PM
Look, Zebra, let's not get all riled up about Monk right now. It will be hard with the stupid Hall of Fame induction coming up, especially with Irvin sniffing coke off the podium at the end of his speech, but we have to swallow our pride and focus on other things, not get bogged down in this disgrace. We gotta rise above it and keep moving forward.
Let's make a date to start SJKing about Monk/HOF after the Skins are eliminated from the playoffs.

35332;
I have a 70th Champ, A Burgundy LaVar, A white Santana, and a Storm Cooley.
My son has a burgundy Santana onesey, almost to big for it. My brother got him a 2T Lavar burgundy before we met him, so I dont know what I will do when he grows out of the Santana.
My wife has a unique womans jersey. I got it for her during the 70th when I got my champ jersey. Dark gold on shoulders, that 7oth burgundy on the rest (think titans where the whole shoulder is gold. Single gold stripes on the inseam. #1 - Redskins with the spear on the shoulder.
I also have a Ramsey white which will never be worn again, and I dont like white since then b/c the red bled through from the collar and it looks pinkish. Although I got Santana in white cause that is the only color they had then
Posted by: Zebra | July 31, 2007 1:42 PM
35332, wearing the leather helmets might prove to yesyall that our dudes are in fact tough and not as soft as Twinkies.
But the union might not be crazy about it.

Things look worse for Vick.
RICHMOND, Va. (July 30, 2007) -- One of Michael Vick's co-defendants pleaded guilty Monday to his role in a dogfighting conspiracy he says was financed almost entirely by the Atlanta Falcons quarterback.
From what I remember reading about this case, one lawyer said if one co-defendant pleads guilty then it makes things much much worse for the rest.

I am actually starting to feel better about the season. I think the O will be much better with Campbell, a healthy Portis and greater use of Sellers. Campbell is going to have his rough spots for sure but if the team is running the rock well his job is going to be much easier. I also think the D will be much improved (it couldn't possibly be worse could it?). Carter should continue his late season surge, Griff should be healthier and with the retooled LB corps and secondary, I see a top 15 defense and 10-6 or better baby.
No jerseys. But I do rock hats, hoodies and a custom burgundy and gold Polo rugby. Did I just channel P Diddy?
And i don't wear jerseys i'm thirty plus

Well, T-shirts. Well, you can always beat on the new dead horse, and put on a t-shirt "Who Shot The Sherriff (But Did Not Shoot The Deputy)?" along the bottom hem of the front of a t-shirt, right along with a #30 on the back of the shirt.
Another option would be to have a 'Redskins Insider: 1 Year Anniversary' tag on the front, and on the back, have a big picture of the Kool-Aid Man on the back with the words "SUPERBOWL! OH YEAH!" printed in bold right under that.
Heh, maybe I'll even ask Kevin McCarthy himself for an idea, when I pop by his store this weekend, if he's not going nuts at Ashburn.

btw, while i don't personally own any jerseys, i have bought three for my son (yes, i raised him right, he's rabid skins fan).
it all started with a burgundy jersey, many years ago. number 9. he wore it so long and so often that the decal wore down to where the 9 looked like a 3.
he now owns a 24 Bailey, which he displays on a wall in his house. and an 81 which he wears proudly.
prayers and good vibes for Thomas and Samuels and divine guidance for Soup.
