Samuels Update (if you can call it that)
Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels had to be carted off the field late in this afternoon's practice with what the team hopes is a mild MCL sprain. Samuels tangled amid a gaggle of bodies and was on the ground for several minutes before being helped to the sidelines.
Samuels appeared to be getting treatment on his left knee, but the team has not yet verified the knee that was hurt. Samuels spoke to teammates and team officials while being carted off, several of whom said that the veteran did not believe the injury was a major tear. Samuels went directly to the training room and the Redskins may not know the extent of the injury until late tonight or tomorrow.
Receiver Mike Espy missed the second practice with a bruised left knee and fullback Pete Schmitt left practice early with a left shoulder injury and did not return. More information on their status should be available later tonight. Rookie linebacker Dallas Sartz (hamstring) missed both practices today. Tight end Tyler Ecker (groin) missed both sessions. Star linebacker Marcus Washington, who is coming off hip surgery, was rested for the second session today.

Please oh please let this injury be minor.

Our Katie Carrera reports that Bubba Tyer just went through the press room and said that they aren't yet certain what degree sprain Samuels has suffered. He'll have an MRI tonight.

Is Gibbs pushing these guys harder this year they seem to be dropping like flys (at least the rookies) - I hope Samuels is fine!
Posted by: David | July 30, 2007 6:57 PM
What an awful way to start the summer. I swear we are cursed as Skins fans.
Do not be surprised if Samuels is not back in time for the opener. I'll 6 to 8 weeks as a best case scenario. Let's hope I'm wrong.
So depressed...
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | July 30, 2007 6:59 PM
Don't forget we have a natural tackle with Wade. Perhaps one of the other lineman will be a good guard. We still have options. It is way to soon to be depressed.

Hope Samuels is alright or the Todd Wade guard experiment could be over before it even starts.

Ricky B we are cursed because they moved the team to Maryland, note how terrible we've been ever since!!!
However I'm an optimist & believe as long as Smoot is ok we're in good shape.

Thanks!

Time for a trade with the Broncos?

Todd Wade has never played LT to my knowledge. If Samuels injury is major and him or Fabini have to play there, we are in a world of hurt.

I'm torn.

Does she wear a beret? Yeah, you don't want The Great Fabini in there if you can help it. What # is Fabini wearing? You're gonna be hearing it a lot.
Posted by: SMACK | July 30, 2007 7:34 PM
I don't think you're torn, Chris Samuels' MCL!
Samuels limped through the room, too, and he also thinks it's minor...the kind of thing that they'll baby along for a couple of weeks. Still, they'll know more around 10 tonight, after the MRI.

CytyBook - a possible joint collaboration business start-up by Cindy and P Diddy.

Do you all honestly believe that the loss of Samuels automatically means a lost season? Where are you all drinking so I can send a cab??? How much is the Grey Goose? He's key but not a dealbreaker.

Cindy,
Can you keep count of SJK use (or, more accurately, abuse)? Which do you think we'll hit first: 100K posts or 100K appearances of "SJK"?
How about this: Whoever can go longest without using "SJK" gets his picture in the Washington Post with Dan Snyder buying him a cherry coke at Johnny Rocket's. And whoever uses "SJK" the most times has to buy dinner at Morton's for the offensive line.

Reports from redskins.com's Training Camp blog is that it's a sprained MCL, but that he's going in for more MRIs tonight.
Incidentally, would we move Wade over (I thought he was more of a mauling RT-type, than a technique-LT type)? If we do, who do we fill the LG with? Pucillo? Tucker? Fabini? Alternatively, do we see what we have in Calvin Armstrong or one of the other young guys?

Vinny Cerrato said after practice that LaRon Landry's contract will get done this evening. Cerrato said that Landry is at Redskins Park reviewing the contract now.
Landry is expected to be available to practice on Tuesday.

Chris Samuels just walked out of Redskins Park wearing a brace on his right knee. He said he has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL. He is scheduled to have an MRI on the knee tonight to further evaluate the injury.
"We'll see how long it takes for me to get back out on the field," he said.
It's likely that Samuels will be sidelined for several practices, if not this Saturday's scrimmage and possibly a preseason game.
Samuels said that when the injury happened, his first thought was that his season was over.
Well, it appears Chris's season is not over. But it's certainly a scare we could do without.

why do i think that samuels going down isn't a big deal? in other years i would've had a heart attack?!

an intern huh? we need a proper introduction cindy. how come jason or you never brought her around to introduce her to us?

hey fake gary, i didn't see an update from you at 1 AM informing us of the landry deal! and you SHOULD have the inside scoop.
so i guess if we want up to the second skins news we should hit pastabelly and not you.
Posted by: dealer | July 30, 2007 8:20 PM
Ummm, I hate to be the bearer of possible bad news, but it is possible to walk almost normally with torn ligaments. The ligaments merely hold the joint in place (they limit the range of motion) so they are only critical when the joint is asked to move in ways that were not originally intended. (By keeping the joint aligned properly, they keep the cartilage from being torn.) The knee doesn't rely too much on the ligaments when walking. A wrap or brace will more or less keep everything in place to make walking possible.
Better hold our collective breath while we wait for the MRI results.
Posted by: Otter | July 30, 2007 8:22 PM
otter, don't worry about it. i just spoke with pastabelly and he said the skins are offering a 1st, 2nd of this year and 5th of 2009 and reaper for atlanta's backup right tackle. i asked lenny if uncle joon knew his right from left...

"hey fake gary, i didn't see an update from you at 1 AM informing us of the landry deal! and you SHOULD have the inside scoop."
That's because there WAS no deal so if you want "fluff" the go read Pastabelly or better yet, this blog. Besides, at 1 AM I'm too busy hanging with the hoochies. Us real writers with close ties to the organization get "fringe" benefits.

so fake gary, what was up with that comment on your blog about "sugarcoating" it? where did you read that and who'd say such a thing?

Next question.

"It's just a sprain," Samuels said. "I think I'm okay. I didn't feel anything pop, but it was definitely my MCL. I'm going to go get an MRI and we'll see how long it takes for me to get back out on the field.
It's likely that Samuels will be sidelined for several practices, as well as this Saturday's scrimmage against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.
Samuels said that when the injury initially happened, his first thought was that his season was over before it started.
"But the good Lord blessed me and I know that I'm fine," he said.
Head coach Joe Gibbs said he is unlikely to move Todd Wade back to tackle to replace Samuels in the lineup. It's possible that reserve lineman Jason Fabini, who has played mostly tackle in his career, could step in for Samuels.

I'm worried about L2's confidence.
How long will it take L2 to work his way out of ArchDeluxe's shadow up here?
Posted by: SCSkinFan | July 30, 2007 8:59 PM
That's ok, they can get Landry to fill Samuels spot!
Oh, that's right he's a safety. This team doesn't draft linemen I forgot. :P

When will we, as Redskins Fans, understand that we suffer from the eternal "Danny Boy" curse! Danny had done so many negative things to this franchise and it's fans that he has doomed the team for the remaining years of his ownership. I've almost resigned myself to understanding that every preseason there will be a debacle like today's. Anyone remember Clinton Portis from last year?? The bottom line is until Danny Boy decides to stop trying to make the world's richest franchise richer and sells the franchise, we are year in and year out going to be the recipient of bad KARMA....GOOD NIGHT NOW!!

Its not preseason yet, but I understand your point. The real problem is that when one starter goes down, we all know our lack of depth will shine through to a losing season.
But I am optimistic, we have players, its just all about coachin em up!
One more to 100k
