Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Afternoon Update

Dallas Sartz broke out in hives and had a bad allergic reaction to some ointment on a band-aid, and missed practice because of that. Not expected to be out long.

Dee Brown was excused from practice for personal reasons.

Clinton Portis says he is shooting for a Sept. 9 return (big shocker there).

Jordan Palmer says - fingers crossed - he is optimisctic about getting his first preseason work this Saturday with
Jason Campbell all but certain to miss.

LB Randall Godfrey will be brought along slowly after missing so much time and could see a very limited role Saturday, Gregg Williams said, but they will take it day by day. Khary Campbell has been working on the strong side most of camp and seems likely to get the start there with Marcus Washington out.

The library is laminating my skins poster (as well as my JMU 2004 D-1AA Football National Champions poster) I have my Skins bobble head and The Larry King Cardiac Foundation lead helmet paper weight as well as a pack of Skins ball point pens. The guy next door to me is a Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees and Florida State fan. I will not show mercy to him. I need to buy a Skins polo for casual friday and I'll be set.

Jack, can you please recount the 8 sacks given up by THE LEFT SIDE OF THE LINE in two games for me? I would like the name of the sacker and the QB sacked. I am willing to bet that Heyer did not give up one of them. And that was Coach Joe's point. Why heap SJK on Heyer without anything to support it? I think JLaC has staked out a position on this and is doing his level best to find support for his thesis. After the first game, his game story blamed Heyer for the hit on JC that led to a fumble. I said when it happened that the blitz was JC's read. After the game, JC acknowledged it was his read and he missed it because he failed to look back side. In the piece that got the Coach riled up, I thought JLaC was a bit over the top in saying JC almost suffered torn ligaments and tendons. He doesn't even have a severe sprain.

Does the O-line need more depth? Yes. But sacks happen. And they will happen when Samuels is in the game. The real problem with the line is at guard. Not left tackle. And the fact that a guy didn't get drafted does not have a SJK thing to do with his ability to play. Don't believe me. Ask Dick Lane, Larry Little, Willie Wood, Warren Moon, Willie Brown, Priest Holmes, Antonio Gates and our own Joe Jacoby.

Portis is a self-inflated wimp, apparently. I'm starting to wonder what his lockeroom impact is since he doesn't want to play preseason. Even Shaun Alexander has 2-3 rushes per preseason game. Sure, Tomlinson doesn't play preseason either, but I don't think much of that personally. What kind of message does that send to the team?

Harrisonburg's a funny town, huh Dorf?
Seems like everybody is either a Skins or Dallas fan (with some odd ball Raiders fans here and there).

The problem is, EVERY Dallas fan there is the 'typical' Dallas fan that I rant about from time to time here. (they only like frontrunner teams like the Yankees, Florida State, Notre Dame, etc)

They are, indeed, the scum of the earth.

Diesel, good to hear from you... let me know if you're ever in the Burg.

I'm pulling my head out of first week of school and dunking into RI very quickly.

Seems I haven't missed much except usual juvenile sniping about Jasno and his posts. Geez could you all be bigger whinier SJKussies?

I thought my students were the most entitled bunch I'd ever met but y'all beat them by a mile.

To play Captain Obvious once again. . . you are NOT entitled to SHTI from this blog or from Jasno. This is only one part of his job and he doesn't get compensated. The guy has a full time reporting job and a family with two young kids.

Gawd forbid he should spend time focusing on that and them, spending even once milisecond away from this blog.

In order for him to give you duchebags what you want he'd have to crawl so far up every a$$ in the Skins organization he'd need klieg lights to see.

If you don't like it seriously why are you still here? You realize you suck the fun out of this whole place and this is supposed to be just that fun.

Hmmm I think I'm in midseason soap box form. I didn't even need a TC.

All I care about at this point is no more injuries. Getting a good 53 man roster. Having all of our starters ready for the 9th. And if lucky picking up some depth for insurance purposes.

If Portis' tendonitis has not healed since May (or even longer ago; not sure), what makes everyone in the organization so confident he is going to be well by the opener vs. Miami? Either Gibbs is giving him a pass on practice, or he ain't gonna be right for a while. I'm scared he's gonna try to play in week 1, "aggravate" his tendonitis and then need surgery. Let's hope Betts can stay healthy and hold on to the ball, cause we're gonna need him for the long haul......

Posted by: Zebra | August 22, 2007 4:01 PM

Please don't compare Portis to Shaun Alexander. Don't you remember our playoff game against them when he was out in the 1st quarter with a parka on with a concussion. Didn't stop him from smiling and jumping around. I'll take Portis who is a gamer on Sunday any time. Plus he'd be running behind a line that is not creating many holes yet to take punishment he doesn't need.

Posted by: cdubb | August 22, 2007 4:01 PM

Jack, I am not picking a fight. I directed that at you because you have repeatedly stated that the left side of the line has given up 8 sacks in two games. You've also stated that 32 teams, including the Skins, didn't draft Heyer as if that had some significance. I am asking you to show and prove. Support your contentions with some facts.

IMHO, Heyer is not the problem that JLaC and apparantly you want to paint him as. He was a steal. And the FO should be given credit for that at least. Like I said, guard is where the problem lies.

Posted by: LH | August 22, 2007 4:03 PM

don't get me wrong, I'm glad Portis is playing right now. I must say I'd feel better if I heard he was at least practicing, but frankly, established vets don't need to play preseason games. I honestly wish we weren't playing any of our starters......college teams don't have a preseason and they play in a league where more than likely if they lose one game their season is done, yet they seem to do just fine without a preseason. I'm just nervous Portis isn't as "OK" as we've been led to believe.......

Posted by: Jack | August 22, 2007 4:06 PM

SMACK is a rare exception... although I don't think he's a Florida State/Miami/ND, Yankee, Michael Jordan, etc. fan, which makes a difference.

Dorf, I'm trying to make it to the burg this fall for a JMU game. I'll let you know if the plan ever materializes.

Posted by: 4-12 | August 22, 2007 4:09 PM

I totally agree that Heyer was an incredible find and I'm happy we got him. And I agree guard is where our problem is. I just don't think an undrafted rookie should be covering JC's backside in his first preseason. I think when Samuels went down JC shouldn't have taken another snap till we sstraightened out our line issues. This team only has a chance if JC has a good season, if MB or Collins are our QB's were SJKED!

Posted by: Jack | August 22, 2007 4:09 PM

Not questioning CP's game ethic; he is definitely a stud. I'm with Jack...Just very worried about knee problems that seem to last longer than team doctors anticipate. I do agree that letting him run behind our pre-season line is risky, but I think it looks like Gibbs may be using his tendonitis to keep him out of games rather than admit he wants to sit him (after last year's Cincy game)......I would rather hear that he is practicing. Some guys don't need the work in pre-season games, but when they are only running by themselves in straight lines I tend to worry.

I have a job too, a family, responsiblities. Why defend below average? Oh cause you are use to it. This blog is for opinions and like it or not I have decided to give my two cents.

earlier you said you "appreciate what JM220 said about you and your wife"

Than you say "I am glad Portis is playing right now"

We know what you mean, but its funny/ironic.....

Posted by: chris laRry | August 22, 2007 4:15 PM

JAck;

That is 20-20 hindsight. Now my arguement is to put help over there. But you cant play in this league with that type of fear. Who knows, Heyer could have been a beast right there and we would have hailed Gibbs for it.

My point is that you do not stop a young QB's progression into his first season as a full time stater b/c one guy goes down. You dont sit him... you coddle, protect, but you dont sit him

Would it have been nice to have an all-pro back-up, sure.. but once again, samuels going down is hindsight.

Anyway, just know that we dodged a bullet and JC knows to look for the blitz on his blindside now... and that Heyer may be good, but LG is an issue.

Posted by: Zebra | August 22, 2007 4:16 PM

Sorry Diesel, I am a fan of The U. Grew up on that campus, both parents were professors there. We used to get about 8 guys into the games at the OB on one guy's school ID. The last guy to go in would drop it off the upper deck in a cigarette pack. Great times.

In 11th grade I went up to Tally for a game. I was drunk on tequila sunrises by 10am, fell into a ditch, and got my ass kicked for yelling It's great to hate Florida State. Even better times.

I became a Cowboys fan before I ever met another Cowboys fan. Maybe that explains it.

JASON LA CANFORA IS A HACK. Anyone who reads his articles and his blog can see plainly that this is no mere objective beat reporter. He has the mistaken idea in his head that he is free to editorialize when in reality, he shouldn't ever make his opinions known.

Now, some will say it's hard not to let your opinions known when you write so much about such an arbitrary topic like sports. But give me a freakin break, how La Canfora still has a job this morning speaks way more volumes about the Washington Post's irresponsible practices than it does about his quality of work.

ONE LAST TIME: Jason La Canfora is a hack. He should be fired. But the Washington Post is too gutless to make such a move.

Posted by: jm220 | August 22, 2007 4:29 PM

Jack,

So you think Jason Campbell should be taken out of the game because Samuels is hurt? How is Jason going to learn his job if he doesn't get a chance to play? Part of his job is avoiding sacks, and it's better to learn it in preseason than in real time. You heard Gibbs yesterday saying that some of the sacks Campbell's taken have been his fault.

Incidentally, it was not the Redskin O-Line that injured Campbell. It was an illegal hit by the Steelers' DE that did it.

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 22, 2007 4:30 PM

TDawg, I was thinking about that last night, I think he good do just as good as anyone else we have there and he's young, if he works out maybe we find our guard for the next decade of the scrap heap. I don't like him as our starting LT protect the edge, but on the inside, with samuels next to him and all he has to do is hold the line, I'd be ok with that experiment, not like we have overwhelmingly better options right now.

Posted by: Jack | August 22, 2007 4:34 PM

You know, that outburst by Gibbs at Jasno seems a bit out of character. I would have thought Gibbs would take him aside and talk to him in private. I'm wondering whether Gibbs didn't try that approach and then get some back talk from Jasno that motivated him to take it public.

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 22, 2007 4:34 PM

We were talking about Dock being improved with Samuels by his side... Heyer has shown great talent for an undrafted rookie. I think he could definitely be a starting left tackle and I think that he is doing a great job filling in all things considered.

I think that he could be a great guard under Samuels tutelage. That would put the line at Samuels-Heyer-Rabach-Thomas-Jansen. I could even take Wade over Jansen, too-- then I'd be feeling better. We'd have some play room.

Thoughts?

Posted by: TDawg | August 22, 2007 4:35 PM

While Heyer IS shorter (2 inches) and heavier (about 20 pounds) than Wade, they should focus him on learning the tackle position. Supposedly Wade's problem is getting leverage b/c he's so tall (and maybe b/c he has had major knee surgery). Heyer is not that much shorter and also seems to be standing up a little too much as a tackle. I like the guy as much as anybody, but he currently does have plenty to learn where he is. I say that, if we can't fill the position with someone on the roster now, then wait till next Wednesday (after the 75 man cut) or the following Sunday (after the 53 man cut).

"Does anyone think that Heyer might move to guard once Samuels comes back?"

NO, he is a tackle, as is Armstrong. He will not move to guard. That they will only risk with a veteran. Rookies have enough to learn, enough on their plate.

Its Pucillo, Tucker, Whitley, or Lefotu. Those are your guards.

I 100% agree, although I do think it helps playing next to a good tackle like Samuels I'd be willing to bet that Samuels isn't really tutoring anybody about being a guard that's probably more Buges and Randy Thomas/Ray Brown last year. Still I like the idea, Heyer can't do any worse and then you have Wade back at his position as a backup if Samuels doesn't make it back full strength or Jansen continues to struggle.

Posted by: Jack | August 22, 2007 4:39 PM

periculum-- don't forget Joe Jacoby. i think a little switchero could be okay next to Samuels.

Posted by: TDawg | August 22, 2007 4:41 PM

"Bring on the new 34 year old LB slowly ... cuz he is not in shape!!! Duh. How long is it going to be before he pulls a hammy?"

Ahmm I think this guy is a good one. I don't think he will be a bust. Of course there was Barrow. Not sure but I think this guy will do well here.

Posted by: TDawg | August 22, 2007 4:43 PM

That's true, Priest Holmes reminds me of a feisty Tre Johnson. I think when he's not cut from KC, we should sign him and try him at guard, he's short enough to stay low and he knows weird Al's system so well.

Posted by: Jack | August 22, 2007 4:43 PM

I like Heyer at guard because I think Samuels would rub off on him. Plus we'd have Wade as back-up to him or Jansen. Problem solved.

If Samuels went down they could plug Wade in at LT too. Though, I dunno if that would be so great...

Posted by: TDawg | August 22, 2007 4:45 PM

If the 'Skins could have gotten a pick for Marshall, they would have. You can be sure they made some calls, probably to Denver first. No one's going to pony up for an indistinguished LB who's about to get cut.

again, no logic whatsoever, it we already are trying one tackle as a guard anyone, so its not like it would be that strange a thing and blocking is blocking. Its not like a career old RB trying to be a full-time WR.

Posted by: Dorf | August 22, 2007 4:50 PM

As much as I'm not a big fan of Art, a mod at extremeskins, he posts an interesting thought about how Grilliams might play to his players weaknesses, i.e., for the purposes of evaluation, training, motivation, and thus the Skins' D will get run over by the Ravens on Saturday night ... on purpose. http://www.extremeskins.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207238

Makes sense to me, both b/c that seems like the kind of coach Grilliams is and b/c the D has shown that it CAN get the job done (building confidence) in the first two outings, so it seems like smart coaching.

Posted by: dcsween | August 22, 2007 4:50 PM

"If the 'Skins could have gotten a pick for Marshall, they would have. You can be sure they made some calls, probably to Denver first. No one's going to pony up for an indistinguished LB who's about to get cut."

They were trying to give him the best shot at hooking up with someone he felt comfortable with, rather than becoming a last minute pick up at the end. Its a sign of respect.

Waiting to see if they could get a draft pick would only make it harder for him later on if he were cut.

Portis is a self-inflated wimp, apparently. I'm starting to wonder what his lockeroom impact is since he doesn't want to play preseason....
Posted by: Dave | August 22, 2007 03:48 PM

The "self-inflated wimp," as you call him, blew up his shoulder making a tackle 99% of the star backs in the league would have passed on. And just what IS a "self-inflated wimp"? Or are you confusing a running back with your prom date?

A number of really good players don't play in the preseason, including perhaps the best OLT in the league and definitely the best RB in the league. Backs have a short life span and smart coaches should not waste that finite number of carries they have in them.

And while we have you here, just how exactly would Portis, or the team, benefit from him running behind Heyer and Wade that would make a potential season-ending injury worth the risk?

And don't answer "blocking the guy who hurt Campbell, because Campbell didn't keep a back in on that play.

I'm a little cranky today because I just learned we could have won the Vietnam War if we just listened to the guy who didn't think it worth fishowing up for at the time.

I just think there is more to the story, if there wasn't why would he feel the need to update us that he is targeting Sep. 9th? Isn't that what has been said all along, seems to me that if he were fine that wouldn't need to be said.

Posted by: Jack | August 22, 2007 5:02 PM

After the preseason opener last summer, there was about a 0% chance Portis was going to do anything to put himself out there this summer. Portis knows what he is doing, Gibbs is playing along, and stuff like him seeing Dr. Andrews makes the story look good.

For all those who expressed such deep and probing concern about my hemmy, I offer this update. I had a flexible sygmoidoscopy (it's just a "peak" compared to a colonoscopy)and a couple of rubberbands attached. It worked for a few days and then the darn things, the hemmys, acted up again. I'm gonna let the MD try again. If it doesn't work on the second go round, then it's actual surgery. In the meantime, I am keeping my low back somewhat loose and my hammy seems to be responding. I guess I was wrong in thinking that there was a connection between the hemmy and the hammy, though I do feel the pull all the way to the inside of the pelvic bone when my hammy is acting up.
Any questions?

Would anybody say a negative word if they were just like "you know after last year we just want to be careful and not risk him before the real bullets are flying." Nobody would find that objectionable after last year. But they are doing that, and he isn't even practicing, you guys really think he's not practicing and going to see the Dr. as part of an elaborate scheme? honestly?

I would venture to guess that by going public with LT's intentions not to play any preseason snaps, the Chargers are losing preseason $'s.
By playing up Portis' 'injury', the Skins leave the door open for a possible preseason appearance, which equals more preseason $.

Portis was legitimately pissed off when he got hurt last year. He railed against the team and the coaching staff for having him out there in the preseason. Maybe he doesn't need to play this charade, but you can bet he's playing it to make sure he doesn't sniff a whiff of playing time before September 9. Gibbs ultimately may not endorse it, but he's along for the ride. It'd hardly be the worst thing he's done in his second spin.

Wes, I totally agree, I just don't see why they'd need the charade. Gibbs this time around has struck me as almost to player oriented, and has been criticized for it. (the whole CP can come out of the game whenever he wants thing) So why wouldn't he agree to not playing his star after last preseason and that whole mess, and then why would CP not be practicing and say he is "targeting Sep. 9th" if he's fine. I have been hearing all offseason that they are just trying to "lighten his workload" and if it were a regular season game he'd be playing. Gibbs has said that, so why no practice and a "I'm targeting comment." Just smells fishy to me.

JLC - There's been much talk about the way our coaches and the front office treat the "core" 'Skins players in light of how the recent handling of the releases of Marshall and Trotter compare (I'm sure you read all the articles about the emotional departure and the mutual love between Reid and Trotter). Granted, Marshall wasn't a 4 time pro-bowler, but he more than proved himself on the field to earn the respect and admiration of his fellow players, coaches and fans. The 'foot-noted' announcement of Marchall's sudden release sheds a lot of light on our beloved team. I think that "axe-to-grind" JLC could do some good with a published article about the attitude towards the players from the heads at FedEx Field, and how it compares to the other top-notch organizations in the league. It's clear that the self-imploding 'Skins suffer from front-office and coaching shenanigans. There's entirely too much talent on this team and too much coaching talent (or is it too many chefs in the kitchen) for them to find themselves at 5-11 last season. An attitude adjustment is in order to create the "identity" that they desperately grappled for and found late in the '05 season. And that adjustment MUST start from the top and work its way down to the way the Suits treat the Players. Gibbs and Company need to put their money where their mouth is when they talk about the "Character" and the "Core" that they claim to hang their hats on. When the team starts jelling emotionally and mentally, it's going to show on the field (which we've started to see on the defense by adding stabilizing forces like Fletcher and Williams conceding some of his strict "my way or the highway" methods to let the players play to their abilities). Your recent article on Marshall's release I think rubs against the surface of this undercurrent - and I'm certain you could probably see it in the faces and hear it in the voices of the players whom you interviewed for it. Please do our Capital a great service and get out an in depth - quoting coaches (who would probably decline to comment), "inside sources" and "key players that have chosen to be anonymous", and maybe Marshall himself, that can help open up their eyes to whatever internal mess is going on in the organization. They may hate you for awhile, but in time, they'll thank you.

Damn. No one else played.

Posted by: 4-12 | August 22, 2007 5:43 PM

My other long shot (other than Pete Schmitt) to make the 53 is John Eubanks, but mostly b/c of ONE play against the Steelers -- taking a straight arm and getting the guy out of bounds ... and because the Skins seem to need a recharge in the return game, esp. with Espy out. I think the reason Eubanks got picked in in the first place was his special teams returns stats from college. The other bubble guy for me is Leigh Torrence ... but that's too many CBs. I think some of the CBs that get cut by the SKins get snatched up right away.

BIG SMILE, HUGE SMILE on Grilliams face discussing Randall Godfrey's first day in practice. Apparently he knocked some guys on their keyster and many heads back on the pass rush. The way he looked and talked if I were Rocky I'd be worried about my job.

Dcsween said, "Closing thought on the English language: the suffixes -ful and -less indicate opposites and work fine for the root word "use" (like "useful" and "useless"), but not for the root word "help" ... "helpful" and "helpless" are not opposites. The opposite of helpful is unhelpful; the opposite of helpless is, well, not helpless. [THIS is my problem trying to explain words to a 4 year old.]"

Dcsween, buddy, there is your opening to talk about the beauty of language, how mutable it is, and how creative a person can be with language without cussing. Remember, your kid is going to learn all the irregular conjugations and colloquialisms and think that they're just a fact of life. Just talk to her/him as an adult, which you most likely do anyway, and your scion will be miles ahead of her/his peers. Language and all its subtleties are what make us human. Jr's ability to appreciate them are a sign of his/her intelligence and fine up-bringing.

Posted by: 4-12 | August 22, 2007 5:50 PM

Seems like most of the guys who made the team last year should make it again this year, except for some of the vets. Something tells me that there really won't be much roster space for ANY of the new guys. Everyone who started last year should start this year with season-long replacements at MLB, WLB, and SS (which we've known since the spring), and short term replacement at SLB. There's still an opening at LG (duh). The special teams guys from last year have a leg up (but alot of those guys already were regular starters like Cooley and Sean Taylor). Draft picks get SOME advantage, but not much (who other than Rocky, who really is around from the past two drafts? Lefotu? is that it?). There are lots of good 1st year guys and rookie guys who just won't make it b/c the SKins are an FA-built team where the starters are IT.

http://www.miamiherald.com/614/story/211804.html

Looks like Cam Cameron is relying on an over-aggressive Redskins D in week one.
Most telling line: "practices have been punctuated with screens and reverses."

Posted by: mugamack | August 22, 2007 7:08 PM

Wes Mantooth is absolutely correct. Portis does not like preseason games, he got hurt last year, and he has no desire to play until the season starts. Gibbs is in his corner about this as he does not want to risk him getting hurt either. Nothing at all wrong with that. Portis was laughing about it today - said he is fine.

Griff has not been playing many snaps - even Ladell has been limited. Point blank - the Skins do not want unnecessary injuries. No need to keep droning on and on about this.

I'm not sure about moving Heyer to Guard, like dcsween said, if one of his problems at Tackle is that he plays with his backside too high, then playing at Guard he'd suffer the same issues that Wade is going through. But as DanO said, I'd be interested in finding out how Whitticker is coming along with his injury. If definitely wouldn't surprise me if we re-sign him when he's recovered from his injury.

1) If he plays to our guys weaknesses, he'll be showing them to the entire NFL.

e) If we get smashed, we could lose the swagger we are currently playing with, drop our heads and think, oh no, here comes last season all over again.
