Campbell Update/Sunday Morning

Jasno is off today, but he's still working the phones and spoke to a person with knowledge of Jason Campbell's status this morning...Here's what we know:
Campbell had said last night that he expected the knee to be stiff and sore this morning. The good news is that neither is as bad as they were tanticipating. There is little swelling and he's getting around much like he did last night, when you saw him walking into and out of the press room and climbing those two or three steps to the dais.
The feeling today is that they were incredibly lucky with this injury. They really dodged a bullet.

I'm heading in to work. Need to get me some coffee. I'll check back in later.

Any news on the general feeling around Redskins Park? And is there any lingering issue/injury with Jon Jansen? He just doesn't look right.

Glad Cambell is doing well!

Posted by: Icarus | August 19, 2007 12:04 PM

All he needs is a big plate of Benchiladas and all will be well. Big bullet dodged.

It's a sign.

Posted by: Whodini | August 19, 2007 12:04 PM

And Keisel deserves a date with the Benaconda.

Posted by: Whodini | August 19, 2007 12:07 PM

That is great news. Thanks for the update Cyn Cyty.

Posted by: jm220 | August 19, 2007 12:38 PM

Just watched the game.

Blame the Line, not Keisel. It was betwenn Heyer and Pucillo.

If the LB had blitzed on the line's left side, that would have been Heyer's Man. Pucillo for some reason doubleld Hampton.
It seems that Pucillo should have been able to reach for Keisel and Campbell wouldn't have gotten hit.

We need someone to hold down the left gaurd position or Campbell will be in danger all season.....

Posted by: who is jasno? | August 19, 2007 1:01 PM

Everyone ease up on Jansen...He is fine and when the bullets start flying for real you will see him normal...In the light of the Oline injuries and especially to Chris...I'm sure they have told Jon to do enough but don't do all out in a way you could get hurt...Its all about regular season...Preseason is not the playoffs...and he does not need to prove anything...Now if he looks like that in the first game...then wory....But at this point there is NO NEED TO WORRY and SPECULATE until its for real....IT freakin preseason guys!

Posted by: Leevi | August 19, 2007 1:02 PM

No word yet on Washington...

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 1:03 PM

Nothing on Marcus Washington?? This is a big blow to the D.

Posted by: cosmofla | August 19, 2007 1:06 PM

Cindy, great minds think alike!
I'm in the healthcare field (therapist), whee the elbow is known as a most unforgiving joint, particularly slow to rehab. Have a bad feeling about Washington.

Posted by: cosmofla | August 19, 2007 1:09 PM

Dear Learn to Spell,
Evidently, you are new to our blog. Welcome!
Jasno is not a typo. Nor is it an improper spelling. Instead, it is an affectionate nickname that is deliberate...based on an old typo. It's just a little inside joke that makes us smile. Kind of like SJK.

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 1:12 PM

Did not see yhe game, but sounds like Skins were very physical and outplayed the Steelers despite the score. Running game didn't do well statistically, I see. Anyone analyze the ground game?

Posted by: cosmofla | August 19, 2007 1:13 PM

To the Quinn doubters, name one offensive skill position player from ND that got drafted in the first three rounds of the NFL draft. His top receiver, Jeff Samardzija, a Biletnikoff finalist, is playing baseball as a pro. Go back and look at the LSU game, the LSU players were 2x as fast the ND players. What was the guy supposed to do? Football is the ultimate team game and ND's failures against better opponents was not his fault.

Posted by: LH | August 19, 2007 01:35 PM

Posted by: Anonymous | August 19, 2007 1:36 PM

Maybe Washington could move to the offensive line, where he wouldn't need to use his arms....
I'm sure there'll be some swelling (maybe an inflamed bursa?) with his injury and they'll have to wait till that subsides...Jasno still thinks this morning that they'll allow it to heal and he'll play ASAP. My guess then is that he'd have postseason surgery to tighten things up.
That's pure speculation, though.

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 1:37 PM

My concern is that the Steelers, with a three-man rush, were able to pressure and get to the QB in preseason. What will happen when the games are for real?

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 1:39 PM

Has Washington been diagnosed w/dislocated elbow? Left or right?

Posted by: cosmofla | August 19, 2007 1:44 PM

Dislocated right elbow. They were able to (cringe) pop it into place immediately. He'd had left elbow surgery in the offseason.

i have the perfect remedy for Jason and Marcus to Be 100% in no time.

http://www.chiherbal.com/the-injury-recovery-kit.htm?&key=Speeding+Recovery&id=16&gclid=CMefteaUgo4CFR8sFQodXVy5LQ

This will bring Jason back in 2 days and Marcus in 1-2 weeks instead of the 4-6 that a medical website referred to. Jasno pass this on to Bubba for me.

Posted by: Dr. O | August 19, 2007 2:14 PM

Watching the game on NFLN right now. The offensive line looks good...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 2:23 PM

i think i should start the final two preseason games with the first team offense. i must say i have looked good this preseason. i believe i can lead this team to the nfc east title. what do ya'll think?

Posted by: todd collins | August 19, 2007 2:29 PM

So can I!

Posted by: Jeff George | August 19, 2007 2:33 PM

Me too

Posted by: Danny Woeful | August 19, 2007 2:34 PM

Cyndy,

Please fact check this JLC quote in paragraph 11 of "Redskins escape with a bruise":

"Keisel was penalized for a personal foul and later apologized to Campbell, who said he did think the shot at his knees was intentional."

I watched the post-game interview with Soups and am pretty sure he said that he thought the Keisel shot was unintentional. Dunno. Maybe Soups changed his mind or I had one too many glasses of grape.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 19, 2007 09:35 AM

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 19, 2007 2:36 PM

I think a Tom Collins would lead this team to an NFC East title before Todd Collins would.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 2:36 PM

Thanks, SC. "Not" is indeed missing. We'll fix that.

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 2:37 PM

A Tom Collins would be nice right about now. Day shift after a night game stinx!

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 2:39 PM

I am more than ok having Collins in with the 1st team the rest of the preseason. The further Brunell is from playing in a real game the better.

I'd like to hear what the coaches thought of Pucillo after watching the tape. Is Campbell having an MRI done on his knee today?

Posted by: cdubb | August 19, 2007 2:48 PM

Glad to help, Cyndy.

Wow, I just got my first editorial work at the WaPo.

I will print out that "not" and frame it.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 19, 2007 2:49 PM

Cindy, Cindy, Cindy. Complaining about working the day shift? You have a great job that many of us wish we had. Getting paid to watch and be associated with sports? Just grab another cup of coffee and chill...

Posted by: Not Anonymous | August 19, 2007 2:56 PM

Posted by: LH | August 19, 2007 01:35 PM

Samardzija was projected to be a 1st round pick. At worst would have been a 2nd. Anthony Fasano (TE) was drafted in the 2nd round by Dallas in 2006 and Maurice Stovall (WR) was drafted in the 3rd by Tampa the same year. Darius Walker didn't get drafted but was a productive college RB and made a mistake coming out of school early. They were good enough in 1 game to barely lose to USC when Bush pushed Leinart into the end zone. That is the only big game I recall him stepping up. To blame it on surrounding players is a cop out. You think he is good, I think he is overrated. Just opinions we'll have to disagree on.

Posted by: cdubb | August 19, 2007 2:57 PM

Jasno said in his article this morning that Washington was due to be sidelined for two weeks. Basically that means they'll sit him the rest of the preseason.

Posted by: Dante | August 19, 2007 3:00 PM

I'm not complaining at all. I have the greatest job in the world! I wouldn't ever want to do anything else.

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 3:00 PM

So does the game yesterday settle once and for all the questions about whether it matters to have a super physical camp with two-a-days every day a.la the steelers... or a more laid back camp like the redskins.

Seems to me that the redskins were just as physical if not more so than the steelers.

Posted by: Dante | August 19, 2007 3:03 PM

That's what Jasno still thinks about Washington: 10 days to two weeks.

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 3:03 PM

"My concern is that the Steelers, with a three-man rush, were able to pressure and get to the QB in preseason. What will happen when the games are for real?"

The steelers use a 3-4 defense but that doesn't mean they only have three rushing the QB. The vast majority of the time they will rush 4 (three D linemen and a LB) the point of a 3-4 is disguishing which of the LBs is the fourth rushed (or the 5th or sixth in a blitz). Things will be better once Samuels gets in. Heyer is doing fine but helacks the experience to help the left guard. Samuels can handle the defensive end and avoidleaving the guard on an island.

Posted by: Mike H. | August 19, 2007 3:07 PM

I ibviously meant disguising, but I think I like disguishing better.

Posted by: Mike H. | August 19, 2007 3:08 PM

Yep. Getting Samuels back is key.

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 3:12 PM

I'm looking forward to seeing how the Gints play against Jasno's Crows tonight. Well get to see what Eli's got this year without Tiki in the backfield.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 19, 2007 3:15 PM

Ok board's resident radiologist here......

Generally elbows dislocate to the back, in the direction of the point of the elbow. Of the two bones of the forearm, the smaller at the elbow (radius) has a circular head that normally sits in a ring of ligament that lets it rotate, so you can face your hand up and down. It only has a small joint contact with the distal upper arm (humerus).

The other forearm bone (ulna) makes a hinge joint with the humerus. If the dislocation is posterior, the ring ligament is intact, and the front lip of the ulna isn't broken, then these usuall pop back in, and heal pretty quickly., as the hinge is a pretty stable configuration, as opposed to a joint like the shoulder which is a ball and cup type..could even play with a brace sooner

Posted by: Jason | August 19, 2007 3:16 PM

Thanks, Jason not Jasno. I would hope they wouldn't risk playing him before Sept. 9. Let it heal!

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 3:19 PM

okay...new rule! one thing is off limits and that is criticism of Cindy up here. she has been a gracious host to us all.

if you can find something about Cindy to criticize then either you're too young (like 10 and under) or very unhappy with your life. for the first one you're forgiven but for the second one you'll need to go see dr. phil or come see me (i can't give you my phone number up here cuz that'd be a violation of a wapo rule and plus i'm very expensive.).

so Cindy is off limits guys. Jasno on the other hand is all ours and we can say/do as we please with him. cuz he's the one actually doing the reporting.

Posted by: littery | August 19, 2007 3:21 PM

I agree with you dealer, but I get the feeling that Cyndy can take care of herself in a war of words, if it ever came to that.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 19, 2007 3:25 PM

Samuels: knee injury should have put him out for the year, but he will be ready for game 1.
Campbell: knee injury should have put him out for the year, but he will be ready for game 1.

This is a sign.
What does it mean: 10-6 and an appearance in the NFC Champoinship game.

Posted by: Thank God | August 19, 2007 3:25 PM

Thanks, Littery, for your kindness! But you guys can criticize me! It's okay.

flimflam, no you weren't piling on. again it's difference of opinion. you think he was being too proud and i think that all NFL coaches are proud and that's why you need a GM to rein them in a little.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 3:40 PM

lh, we don't hate brady quinn. we were up here watching the draft this past april and one thing we all saw was how nice and gracious he was in "defeat". he is a nice guy and by all acounts much nicer than that other guy you mentioned.

he was still picked in the first round like JC so it's not like he is an underdog all of a sudden.

i saw the highlights and his arm strength is suspect. the ball took forever to get to the receivers. and that's how he looked against LSU.

we're just picking him to not be that good. and i used to like ND when lou holtz was there (sorry i just like their helmets and liked the movie rudy).

Posted by: littery | August 19, 2007 3:40 PM

The Pittsburgh broadcast team (shown on second half of the NFLN broadcast) is making fun of all the over-titling on the 'Skins coaching staff: "they have an associate head coach, three assistant head coaches, an offensive coordinator..."

So true.

Sounds like my (soon to be) former company where you have General Managers reporting to General Managers reporting to General Managers who report to a VP who reports to another VP and so on and so forth...

Yeah, I'm sure they told Jansen that if it comes down to him exerting himself, and some DE bulldozing through Jason Campbell, to just relax and let the DE through because after all it's only preaseason and we wouldn't want Jansen to unduly exert himself to protect the franchise QB.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 4:00 PM

I was in Arizona last week. A friend of my brother's brought over their smart car. They are available, though probably not universally.

As for whether they are really smart...Not so sure about that. Having seen them in Europe and now here, I cringe when I think of an SUV on "smartcar" collision. Good for parallel parking though, I'm sure.

Have I missed anything?

Viscount...

Go big and green with the Ford Hybrid SUV. I think it was the 2006 car of the year....

Posted by: chris larry | August 19, 2007 4:05 PM

I feel guilty about not going smart...but I am on the Metro four days a week and barely drive 50 miles a week.

Posted by: Cindy | August 19, 2007 4:06 PM

I am SO not an SUV guy. I know it's practically required here in the Pacific NW, but I don't wear fleece or hiking boots either.

I put a deposit on a new car already, but I'm not sold on it and am still shopping.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 4:08 PM

I think when I go greener than my Hyundai Sonata I'll probably go with a diesel SUV. The new diesels are by some accounts more fuel efficient than the "hybrids". At least that's what I've heard....

Posted by: CaroCanesFan | August 19, 2007 4:09 PM

Smart Car saves money on funerals too. They can bury you in it when you get run over by a semi or and Expedition.

Random musings provided by a fat bald guy....

a) I would like to thank the Redskin's defense for providing the faithful a little slice of hope for the season.
b) For a while last night I thought I had set some sort of record for holding my breathe while Campbell lay on the field.
c) I remember last year's game when the Skins beat the Saints. With that being said, Todd Wade may still get a chance to start somewhere on the offensive line.
d) Is it just me or does anyone else think Sam Huff needs da boot? He rambles, annoys the players during interviews and seems confused at times.

cdubb you are right on the money. Navy, Air Force, Army, Duke. Please tell me when was the last time any of those schools were good in football.

Well, we had that amazing year in 1994 to get to the All America Bowl (loss) and in 1989 we were co-ACC champs under Steve Spurrier before being crushed in our bowl game (Texas Tech running back ran for ~300 years on us while still hooked up to an IV bag/stand due to a life-threatening case of the flu). Otherwise, you have to go back to 1941 (pre WWII folks) when we went undefeated and made it to the Rose Bowl (we lost that bowl game too, sensing a pattern yet?)

Adam

PS Useful bar trivia. Jan 1, 1942 is the only time the Rose Bowl was not played in Pasadena CA; because of fears of Japanese invasion, the game was played at Duke in Wallace Wade Stadium. It's also the only time the Duke campus has seen a national champion football team ;)

Diddy,

The 360 version of Madden 08 is really solid. It has an arcade value with the player weapons which adds some spice the game. The gameplay is very smooth. This version is so much better than the previous 360 installments which have been very disappointing. They have the full franchise modes with fantasy draft. Superstar mode is improved as well which I never really did to begin with. I love the new hit stick 2.0 if you hit down on the analog you can take out their legs and if you hit up on the hit stick it will be a shoulder blow. The defensive AI is turned up. So the DB's actually break on the ball a lot more. There are more interceptions and turnovers but that's why you have to make the right reads and take care of the ball. I like it. It was worth the purchase. The previous 360 versions were not.

CAMPBELL IS OKAY

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that an MRI on the bruised knee of Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell shows that he suffered only a bruise to his knee on Saturday night.

Campbell is now day-to-day.

Schefter also reports that linebacker Marcus Washington has a dislocated elbow, which was been relocated. He nevertheless will miss two weeks.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 19, 2007 6:39 PM

Thanks 4th. I was wondering if he was having the MRI done today. And only 2 weeks for #53 is great news. Let him rest up for week 1.

Did any of you all see how the Broncos were crying that Dallas was being too aggressive in their game yesterday. Not sure which is worse - Denver crying like some little SJKes or Wade Phillips coaching his D up like Spurrier did with the O in the preseason. And if he was trying to prove something from getting fired from Denver 12 years ago makes him an even bigger loser. F Dallas.

Thanks caleb, just ordered Madden online :-)

Last year's version was really disappointing...

I think I mentioned it yesterday...but as much as I will cherish my childhood memories of Frank, Sonny, and Sam, I couldn't believe how doddering and old Sonny and Sam sounded on the radio yesterday. I've never liked "The Other Guy", so I'll just keep not remembering his name.

It may be time for new blood. I wonder if "Mr." Snyder has the guts to can Sonny... Does anyone in DC have the guts to can Sonny? I don't think so...

Jasno takes the day off and the Post gets scooped by Schefter. Cindy, haven't you guys learned never to let Jasno leave The Park?

Cute that The Post is running a Flash slideshow of White House weddings. I didn't think Jenna Bush announced a date or venue yet. I wonder if the president will show up in blue jeans or if the First Lady will make him wear a tux again :-)

Diddy,

Last week I was listening to the game against Tennessee and someone accidentally "locked" Huff out of the booth at half time....

He was banging on the door and finally some page let him back in, but only after the third quarter already started.

Guess Huff didn't take the clue.

I would post something football-related, but I got nothing and I'm taking a break from creating PowerPoint decks.

I could offer my one word review of Timbaland's "Shock Value": stellar.

I think 'Skins Nation is breathing a huge sigh of relief right now. JC is going to be okay, Marcus is going to be okay. Hopefully they'll both be held out of the rest of the pre-season (and maybe Cooley and Moss can join them, too).

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 7:21 PM

Cyndy,

Good thing you fixed the missing "not" in JLC's column, because some Steeler bloggers (e.g., Die Hard Steel) were angry...they have caught on that the error was fixed, but still don't like JLC's article, which is described as "sensationalism" and not objective:

"Addition: since this blog was written, the Washington Post has printed a correction stating Jason Campbell said the hit was not intentional. They have since removed the headline on the article as well. It now reads "Redskins escape with bruise; Campbell takes hit to knee in loss"

This greatly changes the complexity of the story, and in the faith of ethical and objective reporting, this is the more appropriate wording. I will stand by my statement that they put objective reporting second to sensationalism, and as their correction indicates, it came at the expense of the integrity of the story. My entry was written based on the first-run of this article, and since this is what is in the printed copy, I will not alter it and support their poor ethical decision."

Diddy, I was going to purchase Timbaland's joint but The Post's reviewer killed it and I haven't heard anything good about it.
I will say that the latest single sounds a lot like JT's Sexy Back. Tell the rest of the album doesn't sound recycled.

Posted by: LH | August 19, 2007 7:30 PM

To those of you who want to know....

Gibbs said in his presser that they may perform an MRI on Jason tomorrow but that he is doing well so it did not appear to be necessary today. He also said that Marcus is a tough guy and he expects him back sooner rather than later.

Sportsnet showed Jason walking into Redskins Park without a limp and without anything on his knee (or leg).

Posted by: Lisa | August 19, 2007 7:36 PM

Thanks for the update, Lisa. Good news.

The Football Gods are smiling on the Redskins this preseason.

By the way, I suppose Espy was the sacrificial lamb this week. I feel bad for the kid.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 19, 2007 7:39 PM

I also feel terrible for Espy. He was playing his guts out and I think he had a real chance to make the team.

Posted by: Lisa | August 19, 2007 7:43 PM

Cool man hit me up when you get it.

I agree with all the breathing a sigh of relief comments. Let's get out of this preseason quickly.

Is Pinkston the former Eagle who was the loudmouth who said some really stupid things a couple years ago?

What are his chances of making the team?

Posted by: CaroCanesFan | August 19, 2007 7:47 PM

Sounds like T.O., CaroCanesFan. Supports the idea that all Iggles receivers are loudmouths.

Guess that's why Thrash never fit in over there.

Posted by: SCSKinsFan | August 19, 2007 7:49 PM

I believe the Eagles WR you are referring to is Freddie FredEx Mitchell.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 19, 2007 7:50 PM

Freddie Mitchell is the former Eagle player you all are referring to. Pinkston is a humble seeming WR.

He has also appeared at a press conference wearing oven mitts to protect his hands. At the press conference he said "I'd like to thank God for giving me these hands."

He didn't know the names of the Patriots DB's. Rodney Harrison called him out.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 19, 2007 8:02 PM

That's right. It was Mitchell. Knew it wasn't TO. He gonna make the team?

HOLY SHMOLY! I am in a full panic at this moment so much so I haven't taken the time to read ANYTHING. I've been MIA due to school and friends. All I see is Campbell "okay" but hurt his knee and Washington injured?

WHAT HAPPENED IN PRESEASON GAME? Bullet points are fine.

Posted by: sfskin | August 19, 2007 8:26 PM

The G Men don't look good at all. The D don't look good against the run

Posted by: jm220 | August 19, 2007 8:29 PM

Mike Anderson just broke a 25 yarder on the G-Men. Yes, old man Mike.

Posted by: jm220 | August 19, 2007 8:32 PM

sfskin, the D was FIERCE! Rocky Macintosh was a beast!

Campbell was sacked low (in the knee) by a Steeler player named Kiesel (?) and the lights went out in DC (I'm just being dramatic here). But it looks like a bruised knee....at least we hope so.

Marcus Washington also dislocated his elbow and poor Mike Espy is done for the season. Injury laden night but we looked pretty darn good!

Posted by: Lisa | August 19, 2007 8:33 PM

sfskin it was a cheap shot. The guy went right for his knee. Cooley had a great game. The D played really hard. Rocky Mac was a straight beast.

More criticism of JLC and this morning's article:

SCSkinsFan Says:
August 19th, 2007 at 6:41 pm
I notified La Canfora's editor of the mistake around 2:30. They changed the error immediately.
Mistakes happen when the beat writers/editors are crunching out stories at 1:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning.

"As a sports writer, I empathize with La Canfora, and I know first-hand that mistakes can be made while under deadline after a night game. His mistake is understandable, and it clearly was not intentional. However, La Canfora has an obligation to point out the mistakes of the subjects he covers, therefore, is in a position to receive the same sort of criticism. I felt his choice of words strongly pushed the boundaries of objectivity, and would have been better suited as a column. The fact a mistake was made in quoting Campbell is beside the point, in my opinion.

This is not to say La Canfora does not have the right to his opinion. The guidelines set by the Society of Professional Journalists say newspapers should mark subjective columns or articles as such; the most common indication is a picture of the writer, or the word "commentary" labeled somewhere on the page or column. Because it is not labeled as such, and the Post cannot fix the mistake in the print version of their newspaper, I feel it's only fair to point out the error, while clearly making a note the Post has since acknowledged it and have done what they can to bring it to the attention of the reader.

sfskin,

JC dropped back to pass, Heyer whiffed on the block, some guy name Keister or Keisel or something hit JC low. JC lay on the ground in agony. We all nearly died.

Turns out JC was doing his best impression of a World Cup soccer player and it was only a bruise.

The bloggers got together and took Keisel to a special place in South Jersey.

Marcus Washington made a tackle, dislocated his elbow, the trainers popped it back in place, and it looks like he'll be back for opening day.

Mike Espy tore up his knee. We all feel sorry for the kid. But if Senator Clinton wins next November, his dad will probably score him a job as the VA's Assistant Associate Undersecretary for Filing the Assistant Undersecretary's Fantasty Football Picks. You're doing a heck of a job, Espy!

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 8:34 PM

P get it right. North Jersey. lol

Posted by: jm220 | August 19, 2007 8:38 PM

Collins looks like the #2 with a nice performance and the Receiver got his 1st TD as a Skin.

The defense was meastly.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 19, 2007 8:39 PM

Thanks peeploggers. I've read through the coverage stuff too.
I'm assuming all of you had much larger heart attacks watching it live.

Sounds like the D has put up another great effort and RockyMac is playing out of his head.
Running game apparently didn't exist? And do mine eyes deceive me "the receiver" caught a TD? From Todd Collins?

MB sucked again? I guessing everyone is calling for him to go #3 or be gone all together.

Cooley played a bigger role.

You know what I don't think I can take the preseason anymore. Not sure what's worse. Seeing this stuff live or reading about it and then freaking out and then getting answers.

Posted by: sfskin | August 19, 2007 8:41 PM

Looks like LBM is in mid-season form.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 19, 2007 8:42 PM

I got to call my baby out. Sorry. Lisa you are totally wrong about LBM. He just fumble with no one around him. LMGO! The G-Men are so going to suck this year without Tikki

Posted by: jm220 | August 19, 2007 8:43 PM

On a separate note I'm pleased to report that I played in a 7x7 soccer tournament yesterday (the equivalent of our preseason except we don't practice or anything else) and we successfully lost all 4 games meaning we got to go home early and we cracked open our beers after game 3.

Several areas of my body are reporting muscles that I had forgotten existed today. I did come within 3 attempts of scoring a goal which for a gal who plays defense, has very few ball skills and when running at full speed looks like D. Green in super slo mo was nice.

Yes I am talking about soccer AND I'm talking about ME playing soccer.

Posted by: sfskin | August 19, 2007 8:46 PM

Yes, the receiver did get a TD from Collins.

MB didn't move the ball till the end of the game had a chance to win it but WR's kept dropping passes, tripping and making stupid penalties.

Best offseason move for the Skins, Tiki Barber retiring from the G-men.

Posted by: calebt17 | August 19, 2007 8:47 PM

Does Espys' injury (poor guy) mean Pinkston can legitimately compete for a spot?

Posted by: sfskin | August 19, 2007 8:48 PM

What the hell are the Gnats and Blackbirds doing??? I feel like I've seen 20 flags thrown so far. Hell, I was afraid that they might cream JC on Saturday after the way they destroyed Philly last week, but the Ravens *AND* the Giants look like crap so far.

Posted by: jm220 | August 19, 2007 8:57 PM

sfskin, Brunell did not suck. As someone mentioned before the receivers kept dropping the balls - and his arm actually had a lot of zip....so maybe he threw too hard. But he completed some nice passes as well.

Posted by: Lisa | August 19, 2007 8:57 PM

This game is slop. We are better than NY and right with Baltimore. NcNair is past his prime. D and running game is all they got.

Pinkston may have a shot at #5 but I doubt he will make it in the end. Moss, ARE, the wide receiver, and Thrash are locks. Then I guess the best out of Stinkston, Corey Bradford and Jason McAddley will stick. McAddley plays special teams and had a nice tackle on a KR last night.

Posted by: cdubb | August 19, 2007 9:01 PM

Brunell is a more than capable backup. In the NFL, if your top guy gets hurt, your hopes of a division championship are in jeopardy no matter what team you're on. Brunell is more than capable of handing the ball off to Portis and completing third down passes to Cooley to keep the 'Skins in contention for any (hopefully none) weeks JC is out. We should lay off the guy. He got demoted after an entire career as a starter and has been nothing but gracious and classy in the process. A lot of guys would have pouted.

Campbell Update: His Status Is 'Day to Day'
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
August 19, 2007

Still recovering from a bruised left knee, Jason Campbell was feeling better on Sunday, one day after a Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman lunged into him.
His status is day to day, according to head coach Joe Gibbs.

"I don't know [if he'll be available to practice this week]," Gibbs said. "It's day to day. It will be based on how sore he is. We'll just have to see how it goes and how he feels."

Added Gibbs: "Our medical team--they have seen these types of injuries before. And I think Jason probably has a real good feel for it, too. If he's sore, then he won't be out there."

Gibbs said Campbell would "probably have an MRI" at some point in the next couple days so that team doctors can get a full evaluation of the injury. There may not be a need for an MRI should Campbell's knee continue to feel better.

The injury occurred midway through the first quarter of the Redskins' 12-10 preseason loss to the Steelers on Saturday at FedExField.

Campbell dropped back to pass and threw a 29-yard pass to tight end Chris Cooley. At the same time, defensive end Brett Keisel lunged for Campbell's left leg in an attempt to sack him. He rolled into Campbell's leg, and the knee buckled.

Campbell fell awkwardly and immediately grasped his knee. Athletic trainers hurried onto the field to attend to him. Keisel was called for a roughing the passer penalty, a 15-yard infraction.

Campbell was able to walk off the field under his own power, but with a noticeable limp.

He said after the game that he was able to move his left foot just after Keisel made impact, and that may have saved him from a knee ligament injury.

Campbell played in two offensive series and finished with 6-of-8 completions for 75 yards.

If Campbell cannot play in this Saturday's preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, then the Redskins would likely start either Todd Collins or Mark Brunell.

Against the Steelers, Collins was solid in leading the Redskins' first- and second-team offense, completing 10-of-13 passes for 74 yards and one touchdown, a 7-yard pass to Brandon Lloyd.

Brunell completed 5-of-12 passes for 56 yards and one interception.

Gibbs downplayed the possibility that Campbell's absence would be a setback for the third-year quarterback and the Redskins' offense.

"He has an opportunity to see Todd go in and Mark go in," Gibbs said. "What it does is get other guys more work. How that would encumber the offense? We'll just have to wait and see."

OK I may hafta eat my words next week...but is anyone else sick of Janso's "PITT and Ravens really know how to run a camp" BS!!!!!

Last night the "2 a day can't wait to hit somebody" Steelers were sloppy and hardly ferocious

Tonight the Ravens are pathetic, sloppy, penalties all over the place. NBC said that Captain Snow Job Billick had some fire and brimstone speech about coming out strong tonight blah blah blah....whoops!!!!!!!!

Enough!!!! Just like the playoffs last year Ravens are ALL BLUSTER AND NO BITE HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

F THE RAVENS, F THE STEELERS, F THE GIANTS

So, if they hold to form, and JC is held out, Brunell will start against the Ravens. That's probably not the team I want to face without an etablished running game trying to show something positive to earn the #2 spot.

Posted by: littery | August 19, 2007 9:21 PM

Based on past history -- I believe the offensive line will perform much better during the regular season... First, they will have Chris Samuels back at left tackle. Second, the first team will play the entire game. And finally, the coaches will game plan against the opposing defense.

Posted by: siris | August 19, 2007 9:26 PM

Based on past history, a painful, shouting, late-October meeting where St. Joe reminds the Oline that he had hoped to have a running attack will be required.

Madden just picked 'Skins fourth in the division "going in to the season." Basically said that the division is the same, Eagles, Girls, Giants, Skins.

Way to go out on a limb, Madden.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 19, 2007 11:05 PM

Madden is really brain dead if he thinks this Giants team is better than the Redskins.

He might be right about Philadelphia being the team to beat in the NFC East, but please.

Posted by: Stumped | August 19, 2007 11:06 PM

Well, the almighty John Madden just predicted the NFC East will end up in this order: Eagles, Cowboys, Giants and Redskins on the bottom. Can someone tell me what he saw tonight that makes him think the Giants are better than we are?

Posted by: Lisa | August 19, 2007 11:07 PM

It just goes to show you that most talking heads just look at what you've done lately and look no farther.

I was amazed to see how many NFC East teams are playing on Sunday night. Isn't it suppose to be a weak division?

Sorry, LH, I was just having fun with Webster's "correct wording" 9:56 post.

Correcting the corrector is always funny.

Plus the whole idea of correcting writing foibles/peccadilloes on JASNO's blog is silly, of course. . . .

That's all. Chalk it up to being chipper after a good game. Go Skins!

Pretty sure it was ME who coined the term 'Jasno' up here. A rare, small moment of glory.

Perhaps MV Dame could look it up and confirm.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 20, 2007 12:09 AM

I coined Man Boobs... anyone still call him that?

Posted by: Dorf | August 20, 2007 12:10 AM

He's trimmed down a little so maybe now he's just got side boobs (I learned that one last night courtesy of TDawg).

Posted by: LH | August 20, 2007 12:16 AM

Dorf - welcome back. You in school yet? The kiddies come tomorrow for me. . . woo!

I thought maybe Man Boobs wouldn't be appropriate with all the weight loss but watching the Titans game I concluded it is absolutely still okay only now we may say more often with affection than derision.

So since I've edged onto this blog after just reading it for a long time, let me add some words from glory days of yore, to brighten up a late night.

This was from a Denver newspaper article after Super Bowl XXII (it's always fun to hear the lamentations on the other side). I carried it around in my wallet for years:

"The Redskins ground the Broncos into the shimmering green turf of Jack Murphy Stadium like grapes beneath the toes of pachyderms."

The article pithily summed things up from the Broncos' perspective:

"The second quarter was a new experience in pain."

Ah, good times. May we experience them again.

Posted by: farstriker | August 20, 2007 12:21 AM

Madden may have made his predictions based on nothing but the news coming out of camps etc. I think a lot of people still think LBM is the real deal despite little evidence.

Whatever - I'm happy to be on the low expectations list for anyone and everyone cause it only means we can go up.

My real contribution to the blog is probably my high non-redskin related comments percentage. It's towers at an unsightly 83%.

Posted by: Dorf | August 20, 2007 12:24 AM

Seems like there are a few more smiling faces after the game this weekend. Good to see!

Glad to hear that Rocky is killing it, hopefully he can keep it up!

I'd like to see our offense get some semblance of a running game.
And even though the defense has looked good, I'd still like to see an extra sack or two, and an INT.

Not complaining though, very happy with the progress we've shown.

Posted by: kost52 | August 20, 2007 12:25 AM

"11 Hurt During Filming of Cruise Movie

BERLIN, Aug 20, 2007 (AP Online via COMTEX) -- Eleven extras were injured when they fell out of a truck during filming of a new movie starring Tom Cruise, police said Monday.

The 11 were taken to hospital as filming stopped on the movie, provisionally titled "Valkyrie," which stars Cruise as Germany's most famous anti-Hitler plotter, Col. Claus Graf Schenk von Stauffenberg.

Police said in a statement that a bolt on a side panel of the truck apparently came loose as the vehicle turned.

The accident happened during filming of scenes around the Finance Ministry in Berlin, which was once the Nazis' aviation ministry.

Cruise's casting has attracted controversy in Germany because the actor is one of the best-known adherents of Scientology, which the German government considers a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of vulnerable people.

"the German government considers Scientology a commercial enterprise that takes advantage of vulnerable people." These are the people who brought us the holocaust, and they're down on Scientology?

Lisa,

I think what Madden saw last night that led him to pick the Giants over the 'Skins was an offense: the Giants showed one last night and the 'Skins are still working on theirs.

Posted by: KK | August 20, 2007 8:24 AM

KK a QB that fumbles without even being hit really shows signs of a offense. There D couldn't stop the run.

Posted by: jm220 | August 20, 2007 8:27 AM

And don't forget about the 20 flags that were thrown in the first half.

Posted by: jm220 | August 20, 2007 8:29 AM

Two good things about Campbell's injury:

1. It's not serious and he should be ready for the opener.

2. It will most likely keep him out of the next game against the blitz happy Baltimore Ravens. So he won't take a bunch of unnecessary hits.

Hope Marcus is going to be ok. With Rocky, Marcus, and Fletcher, we may have the best LB crew in the NFL.

Posted by: Max | August 20, 2007 8:46 AM

jm220--

Neither team has shown much so far, but it's not unreasonable for Madden to pick the Giants over the 'Skins. Manning was 10 for 13 for 114 yards and the Giants had 298 yards of offense. The 'Skins? 229 yards of offense. Their longest run was six yards.

An offense that can't run the ball or put points on the board in the preseason is dubious. Based on what we've seen so far, it looks like the 'Skins will lose a lot of games by low scores like 10-7, 13-3, etc.

Posted by: KK | August 20, 2007 8:47 AM

Of all of the guys that played in the 3rd and 4th quarters DE Chris Wilson impressed me the most. They had to hold him double team him and whack him in the head a few times to stop him from getting to the QB. Could he end up coming in as a roll playing pass rushing DE for us?

Posted by: Max | August 20, 2007 8:48 AM

Max,

It's not a good thing if Campbell is out of the game Saturday. He needs to learn to handle the blitz, and it would be better if he learned in preseason. Don't you think the 'Skins will face the blitz in the regular season?

Posted by: KK | August 20, 2007 8:50 AM

Neither team has shown much so far

KK I will agree that neither team has shown much on the O side of the ball. However, since I am in Jerz. I watch all of the G Men games and listen to the Skins game on XXX. Our D seems to be way better than theirs.

Posted by: jm220 | August 20, 2007 8:52 AM

jm220--

I like our D, bunches. They've made great strides, more than I was expecting or hoping for.

But, I like the Giants O, at least over ours. Manning had a 128 QB rating last night. Their O line stepped up, and they had a running game. And they did it against one of the best D's in the league.

I'm glad we don't have their injury problems, though.

Posted by: KK | August 20, 2007 9:03 AM

Following Saturday's game, Joe Gibbs indicated that Pucillo had played himself into the mix for the starting job at left guard.

Posted by: jm220 | August 20, 2007 9:04 AM

Honestly, why does the NFL insist on continuing to risk injury to it's players by maintaining this ridiculous pre-season schedule? I don't see how it benefits anyone!

Easy answer there man. Money in the owners pockets charging full price for tix as a regular game along with concessions, parking, etc.

Glad to see Eli can play ok in the preseason. Once the real games start he will revert back to the deer in headlights we all have come to know. I am way more comfortable having Campbell long term than a QB making his fame on his last name.

Posted by: cdubb | August 20, 2007 9:24 AM

Jon....

The preseason benefits the owners and that's it. They get to charge full price for 2 extra games in their season ticket plans plus get all the TV ad money. It's all about economics, literally.

Posted by: CaroCanesFan | August 20, 2007 9:24 AM

Something positive to focus on: (and I hate to call out a regular, but would love to hear from Nate on this). Laron Landry, could we have made a better pick at 6? This kid could be Def. Rookie of the year. I was at the game Sat. and he is a BEAST. He still has a lot to learn about where he needs to be but man his size and speed was overwhelming. We had a lot of regulars wanting Jamal Anderson or Okoye. We made a great pick in L2. He and Mac52 will be a blast to watch!

Posted by: C2 | August 20, 2007 9:26 AM

KK,

Have you forgotten that Campbell was injured early in this game? He had a very nice drive going and if he had stayed in the game we probably would have had more yardage - and more points.

Eli played longer than Campbell and the Giants only scored what 12 points - 2 more than the Skins?

Posted by: Lisa | August 20, 2007 9:32 AM

Posted by: JonTPK126 | August 20, 2007 09:16 AM

To get the players into game shape and to see which players have lost it, which players still have it, and which rookies can contribute. It allows the coaches to try new things.

The preseason is not a new invention and it is much shorter now than it used to be. Do the owners make money off it? You bet, but that's what allows them to pay the players so well.

What do you propose? That the players show up on a Monday and play their first game the following Sunday?

Posted by: jm220 | August 20, 2007 9:40 AM

Lisa,

Is that a trick question? How could I forget that Campbell was injured? Collins replaced him and had a good outing -- he put up reasonable numbers, 10 of 13 for 74 yards.

The problem was that the 'Skins couldn't run the ball. They had 42 yards on 20 carries, and their longest run was six yards.

Posted by: KK | August 20, 2007 9:42 AM

But Campbell can throw the deep ball....I don't believe that Collins can.

I agree that our run game is dismal - hopefully that will improve when Portis and Samuels return.

Posted by: Lisa | August 20, 2007 9:46 AM

seems to me we are a team with lots of depth....a good team overall, not great talent in lots of places but certainly good talent lots of places and the fall off between starter and backups is not much.

Mornin y'all.

Greetings from tha 305. It seems like things are comin' along how you'd expect. Yes the Washington injury is tricky. But with some new talent there too, by the time he's truly ready - lookout!

And as far as the pundits go - let 'em pick us last. I love it! Two years ago they picked us last all the way to Seattle where we coulda won that one too!

Remember - "there's a fine line between cleverness & stupidity".

Posted by: nah | August 20, 2007 10:07 AM

LH, You know, I was asking myself the same thing. I try to be more tolerant on RI, but this "everything-bad-is-good" line of reasoning has me stumped. Whatever happened to "bad is bad and good is good?" I think I'll go out and hope it passes.

Posted by: KK | August 20, 2007 10:07 AM

"Does Espys' injury (poor guy) mean Pinkston can legitimately compete for a spot?"

Not unless he has had a miraculous recovery from his injuries. If KC releases Priest Holmes expect the Redskins to consider getting his services.

The offensive line looks like it is still having serious problem still. Wade could end up at right tackle when Samuels comes back. The guard position is still up in the air.

Posted by: periculum | August 20, 2007 10:16 AM

Kk - I'm not even sure you're makin' sense there, buddy.

You weren't thinking the Spurrier pre- season was good, we're ya?! I believe the skins have done well as underdogs. Les'see - everyone thought Miami had us in '83.. Everyone thought Buffalo had us ... everyone thought the Broncs had us too. I like our records there...

Sleepers, buddy. Sleepers.

Kk - you sound more like a Dallas fan to me anyway...

A friend of mine mentioned yesterday that LT (v2.0 in SD, not oldschool NY) has a clause in his contract stating he doesn't play in the preseason. Is this for real? I haven't had time to catch any Chargers highlights, so I can't confirm. Anybody have any knowledge?

Posted by: D7 | August 20, 2007 10:20 AM

D7 - I don't think it's written in, but he's only played 14 snaps in preseason his whole career. They just don't risk him, and trust him to be ready. Guess it works.

What's the plan at guard now, is Gibbs serious that Wade is still the starter?

Wade = sucked against TN
Pucillo = played well against Pitt

of course that would mean that Wade is still the starter......wait what? This staff amazes me sometimes.
