Haiku Man Is Back
Not much intro needed here. The Man Is Back.
Here's his guest blog:
I challenge the Peanut Gallery to a Haiku-a-thon. Subject: A Pre-Season Issue Facing the Redskins. If you want to remind RI of the format, it is 5-7-5 for a total of 17 syllables -- bonus points if you can actually get a traditional image of nature in it while still making it topic relevant! Here are my entries to kick things off:
Redskins' Space Cowboys:
A saint, chief, genius, and hog.
One last chance at moon!
Lax camp doomed last year
Toughness versus risk looms large
Just win safe, baby!
New system, year two.
Does familiarity
Bred contempt...or wins?
Does Soup satisfy
Or will offense go hungry
On watery gruel?

SMACK, the reason I posted the Irvin article is that Lisa mentioned that Irvin's speech was "great for anyone going through challenges in life."
I'm going through a rough patch right now (nothing like Ahmad's, fortunately for me), so decided to see if the Playmaker had any words of wisdom for me.

Like I said after the draft, I hope Landry can play D-line because everyone is going to be running right up the middle just like they did last year.

"Like I said after the draft, I hope Landry can play D-line because everyone is going to be running right up the middle just like they did last year."
I think if that happens Snyder will fire Williams in the middle of the season. They did go and get his middle linebacker from Buffalo just for that purpose.

I agree, we should get rid of Collins at all costs-- keep Brunnell in there at #2 for now, and keep Bramlet and Palmer for development. To me, it looks like the Chiefs and Vikings both need some depth at QB to help out.

great, a guest post. I've got an idea. How bout a post about the scrimmage.
Posted by: Anonymous | August 6, 2007 9:10 AM
Sometimes no news is good news for this team.
Yes, I agree a post about it would be great, but we know Jasno is not lazy, so if he hasnt posted, or called cindy with something to post, then there must be a good reason. And knowing Jasno, he will make up for it with many posts.
Does it really affect us if he posts nothing on sunday, or even monday, and then posts a lot the rest of the week? Does having whatever info he has really make a difference if we know it today or yesterday?
Posted by: Zebra | August 6, 2007 9:18 AM
And, correct me if I am wrong, but Jasno is not required to do this blog, no?
So why do people feel entitled that he should post things that they want to know?
Maybe asking nicely is the way to go. Hopefully I dont raise my son to be so prickish (SJK)
Posted by: Zebra | August 6, 2007 9:28 AM
I'm not sure what was worse, watching the scrimmage, and having to listen to Wally Williams, the broadcaster, who also just so happened to be a former Ravens player, or having to listen to people heap praises on Mike Irvin all weekend. I guess the whole thing about cocaine, and hookers, is water under the bridge?
Not to mention that every time the NFL Network had a player interviewed during the scrimmage, it was a Ravens player. Hello?? There were TWO teams playing out there.

All you haters - chill. JLC's bringing some good info. Besides that, no news is to a large extent good news in training camp..or would you prefer that exclusives about CP's knee tendinitis being season-ending, Jansen tearning his Achilles again, or Taylor decapitating a rookie WR? Well, the last...that would be kinda cool....sure yeah, we want good insider info, but I like the poetic change of pace.

How hot was it in Baltimore Saturday night?
Peter King wrote "3. I think I'm dying to know how the players functioned in the Baltimore-Washington scrimmage in Maryland on Saturday. Temperatures reached 141 degrees on the field."
I'm betting he Jasnoed and that he meant to write 114.

Clip from the Balto Sun:
Ravens wide receiver Devard Darling and Redskins safety Sean Taylor tangled with each other on a few plays during an 11-on-11 series. The tensions led to Darling's ripping off Taylor's helmet. Darling said the feud began two years ago when Taylor decked Darling after the receiver caught a slant pass during a seven-on-seven passing drill. "I've been waiting years to get him back," Darling said. "If he wants to be physical, I can get physical. That's my game."
>>> You have to believe that Mr. Darling just happened to have been very, very, very lucky, for example, that Sean Taylor only obliterates when temperatures fall below 105 degrees Farenheit.
Posted by: dcsween | August 6, 2007 10:27 AM
Sween, would you say that Darling's was a bit hot-headed Saturday night?
Posted by: KK | August 6, 2007 10:30 AM
KK;
Nope, 141, saw it on the broadcast... of course that was the on the ground. The sun radiates hottest closest to the surface, maybe a couple of inches.. but it was prolly around 110 heat index up around the players torso and head
Posted by: Zebra | August 6, 2007 10:30 AM
Zebra,
Thanks. Of course, didn't a lot of players end up on the ground. Amazing they didn't melt.
Posted by: KK | August 6, 2007 10:32 AM
Yep, but a couple of inches of 141 doesnt feel that hot. Now if you were barefoot on the field you would have a nice burn on the bottom of the feet.
Same prinicple with fire walkers, it takes a little time to burn skin.

A quote from London Fletcher in the other DC paper on Saturday AM before the scrimmage:
"It will be special," Fletcher said a little more than five months after he left Buffalo for Washington. "This will be my first live contact as a Redskin. I guess people will be looking at me because I'm the only new guy on the defense with the exception of [rookie safety LaRon Landry]."
Question: What did Fletcher really call the first round draft pick? The brackets are the reporters.
My guess: Numbnut (SJK)

People will be looking at London School of Economics because, as noted above, he's expected to shore up not just the middle of the LBs but to somehow make our D line better as well. That seems like Grilliams' gamble, anyway. No pressure, LFB.
"Name?"

"Full name?"

Another bit from the other DC paper re: Wade sitting out practice this past Friday:
"Left guard Todd Wade sat out the 65-minute practice because he lost too much weight in the heat -- 17 pounds Wednesday and 12 pounds Thursday."
Fact: In one day, Todd Wade sweat nearly three times my third child's birth weight. My wife has nothing on Todd Wade (except that she probably was in labor for twice as long as he was in practice). Thatsalotasweat.

McFarland's season over
Colt's defense hobbled
(Aug. 5, 2007) -- NFL Network's Adam Schefter is reporting that Indianapolis Colts defensive tackle Anthony McFarland has sustained a season-ending knee injury.
According to sources, McFarland suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Indianapolis Star is reporting McFarland's injury is believed to be to his patella tendon. Either injury likely would end McFarland's season.
The Colts have said McFarland is still undergoing an evaluation and his status has not yet been determined.
McFarland's injury comes one day after the Colts terminated the contract of defensive tackle Corey Simon.
The Colts acquired McFarland last October in a trade with Tampa Bay. They sent the Buccaneers a second-round draft pick.

In the few months I have participated or read the topics on here, I certainly wouldn't consider anything "Insider" about this blog.
I know, I know... bash me, tell me to take my ball and go home... but seriously WHERE IS THE INFO? I realize Jason has a new kid, and a "real job", but why call it Redskin Insider, why not "Redskin happy hour" where you can put out cute Haiku's and debate whether B. Lloyd is going to get the job done.
What I expect from a Washington Post Sports Writer who describes himself as an Insider. Uh I don't maybe some information that the average Joe either doesn't know or couldn't find out. I sure your loyality to Jason and his crew is going to be strong and rightfully so... but for those of us who are interested in receiving actual information, or maybe a interview from a player or two it certainly would be a change in the right direction.
I can't for the life of me think, why there isn't any "new" news? Redskins Blog seems to be a more suitable title. Until we get some INSIDE info.
Am I not getting something here? This is training camp, where there are underdogs on the team fighting for positions, what are some of the players saying about the new guys? How are Gibbs and Saunders working together? Why is there no competetion at either of the kicking positions and how do they look?
Give us some news man
Insider News would be good
enlighten us please

Hail to M, yes, you are missing something.
The RI blog was hijacked by the RI bloggers some time around Week 1 last season. There is no particular loyality toward JLaC, but people here understand that he does this thing w/o compensation from the WaPo, and that no one is entitled to any 'insider information' by simply demanding it.
There is another blog that is very popular with Skins fans -- the one paid for by the team. There is alot of overlap, but here, the sense of "I want it now and I deserve it" is as yesterday as The Owner's "I want it now and I deserve it AND I paid for it" attitude that ended with last season's performances of the previous off-season's free agent acquisition. The newshounds on that site are very, very good at finding timely media clips with the latest information.
This is a friendly and welcoming place; roll with it and be grateful when there IS a nugget of insider dope ... and like other peeps here, feel free to develop an addiction to it, as well as the attention span of a hamster on booger sugar. The begging for and complaining about the absence of it ... well, that gets the sympathy of someone who tries to buy the booger sugar with a personal check at 4 in morning. SERENITY NOW!

Right there with you, Hail to 'em. I rarely stop by here anymore because of the shortcomings you just mentioned. But every now and then I give it another try, only to find a blog of haikus. Now I actually write poetry on occasion, and enjoy reading it. But if it's going to be called "Redskins Insider", there should be some useful nuggets of information abou the Washington Redskins.

Read the friggin' paper. The Washington Post is in the business of selling newspapers. This blog and all the others on this site are an extension of that. They're designed to reach prospective readers and help sell papers. I cannot believe that anyone comes to this page looking for "inside" information that no one else has. If its truely newsworthy, it's going to be in the paper. And there are other outlets if this doesn't satisfy. Sheesh.

I buy the paper. I read. My point was... Redskin Insider? Come on... I have just as much access playing Madden 07. I am fine with the info on here if this is indeed what information is provided... example Haiku's or what to call Sean Taylor Meast or The Reaper. Like I said, the title alone leads you to believe you will get SOME news.

I agree with dcsween, JLaC does this on what amounts to his own time. You see Hail to 'em, the great thing about this country is that you have the freedom and right to NOT read this blog at all...
