Joe Salave'a Cut

Heard that DT Joe Salave'a was cut. They are looking to add youth there.

he had a decent camp and seemed to be over his injury problems, but didn't get much work with the first team.

They like Montgomery and Golston and have a healthy Griffin, But Big Joe was a real core guy and pretty well liked around here by all. He was a another great 2004 success story - a la Lemar Marshall - who is now gone.

Pete Schmidt is also gone - he, like Ross Tucker, has an injury issue. Wr Jason McAddley, who was hurt Saturday, is also cut.

Hate to see the good guys leave, but this is what we've been looking for -- get younger, faster, stronger. Eat your Wheaties!

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 28, 2007 2:06 PM

Whoa! I feel better now.

Posted by: Mark Brunnel | August 28, 2007 2:07 PM

damn I like Big Joe!

Posted by: herb | August 28, 2007 2:07 PM

So;

Griff
Golston
Monty
Boschetti

I guess Wynn is safe as the 5th?

Was the guy who cut his head, #77, a DT?

Posted by: Zebra | August 28, 2007 2:09 PM

Stumptown Chris, are you there?

here comes gerrard warren

Posted by: badnewz | August 28, 2007 2:10 PM

Wow. pretty surprising. I am sad to see him go. I thought he would be able to come in when Golston/griff get tired and be a force. On the other hand, I'm gald to see were giving some younger guys a chance to grow/produce.

Posted by: Dman | August 28, 2007 2:11 PM

FIRST!!!!

P.S. Gerard Warren also has a new team now (not Denver). Can't remember who.

Posted by: anyone say first yet | August 28, 2007 2:12 PM

Weak on the D-line and they are cutting experienced vets?

I don't get it...!

Posted by: GAD | August 28, 2007 2:13 PM

That sucks. Any chance he gets scooped up by someone else? I assume we'll keep his number if we need him.

I haven't seen push from our dline in ages, so it makes sense. He will be missed.

Posted by: WaPoLiveFan16 | August 28, 2007 2:13 PM

This frees up some decent money on the cap (1.8 mil). NOW can we get Cooley and Taylor both signed.

Posted by: HELLOOOO | August 28, 2007 2:14 PM

Too bad. I have a soft spot for guys named Joe.

I bet Scarface Alexander makes the squad now.

Posted by: jjmat84 | August 28, 2007 02:01 PM

I mentioned this yesterday.

Why didn't JLaC mention him. as far as line depth, I think we are 'good enough' to go into the season with Heyer, Wade, and Pucillo as our primary back ups....

We are thin at TE very, very much.

JLaC - What's up with Wiggins?

Have you been watching Griffin, Montgomery and Golston? I wouldn't exactly call any of them "weak".

Sad to see Joe go, he's a dude I really liked, but I think more than anything this is a clear endorsement of where the young'uns are -- Goldstone and Muntgummry are ready to play.

I do hope he enjoyed that last Wegmans run with Grilliams...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 28, 2007 2:17 PM

Yea - they're weak.

No pressure on the passer - EVER.

That's weak!

Posted by: GAD | August 28, 2007 2:18 PM

I thought McAddley might be the #5 WR. Who gets the fifth spot now? Bradford? Hoag? Someone not currently on the roster?

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | August 28, 2007 2:19 PM

Salavea only counted $893K towards this year's salary cap.

Still, the younger guys will be cheaper since most of them are low rounders or UDFA in their 1st 2-3 years of NFL experince.

We def need to sign Cooley. Taylor can wait until after the season.......

Posted by: 4th Floor | August 28, 2007 2:19 PM

They might use the 5 WR spot to carry a backup OL-man.

Posted by: Stumped | August 28, 2007 2:21 PM

GAD, I think we're banking on the LBs and safeties bringing extra pressure, so the D line just has to be competent, not world-beaters.

Last season they weren't even competent, they were a big part of everything collapsing on our D. Now the key guys appear to be back healthy (Griff, Daniels) and the youngsters in the middle are coming along... it's not going to be a liability this season, mock my words!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 28, 2007 2:22 PM

Joe had his time in the sun. But the past few years have been one injury after another. Unlike Griff, Joe was never a game changer. The D-line is the weakest unit on the Skins and if Joe doesn't get signed elsewhere, I can see him coming back if depth is needed.

Posted by: AL | August 28, 2007 2:25 PM

This is, of course, sad for Big Joe -- but it's a good sign for the Skins' D-line if the coaches feel that Montgomery can play a significant role this year.

Montgomery can be a beast. And played well against the Ravens.

Posted by: CMoney | August 28, 2007 2:26 PM

Very sad to see Big Joe go. Real core Redskin and a genuine tough dude.

That said, I have been pleasantly surprised by the play of the d-tackle rotation of Griffin, Golston, and Montgomery. Only Griff is really a penetrator but then again Big Joe was not a penetrator either. He played the nose spot and tried to occupy blockers.

This would seem to bode well for Scarface Lorenzo Alexander.

Posted by: JamesTuthill | August 28, 2007 2:26 PM

Didn't Wiggins stink the place up the last couple of years?

What's wrong with Todd "carbonated" Yoder? I thought he caught at least one TD pass last year?

Posted by: Redcoat | August 28, 2007 2:26 PM

Bummer. This coming on the heels of ESPN reporting just days ago that the Redskins D-line would be much improved, partially because Salave'a looked like he was all he way back.

Shows you what ESPN knows...

The U.S. Americans can not find the Samoa U.S. on the map because the "Joe South Africa [say it really quickly]" was cut from the Native America football. And the football is not on the map where the Samoa is, and therefore the Americans from the U.S. don't know.

2004 Playoffs, Wild Card Game, Begining of the 2nd Half.

If it wasn't for Salavea, we wouldn't have won that game......

Posted by: Anonymous | August 28, 2007 2:28 PM

badnewz--Gerard Warren was traded to Oakland. If you want to blast the 'Skins for something they're not going to do, at least make it something that they're not going to do but would do if they were as stupid as you think they are.

Posted by: 4th | August 28, 2007 2:29 PM

Stumped, if they only keep 4 WRs then I assume they'll want 3 TEs. I'm not sure the depth there is any better.

Cooley, Yoder, end of list.

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | August 28, 2007 2:30 PM

As I thought they wanted to spend some time breaking the news to the guys who have been through the mill here. Like Joe Salave.

I think I agree with Jason on the guard situation. But I think they really want to keep Armstrong. I think Fabini is gone along with all the others. Lefotu still has an NFL Europe exemption at least for another week. Practice squad again that is rather disappointing I think.

Griff
Golston
Monty

Boschetti is gone I think.

Posted by: periculum | August 28, 2007 2:30 PM

Jasno, I still want to know what you think of our scouting department. Seems like they're doing a better job. What say you?

Overall, the Skins have made pretty good efforts to fill their holes from last year. The O-line was pretty good and they added Kendall after losing Dockery. They already had good RBs one WR and TE.

On defense, they upgraded at LB and added talent in the secondary, both big problems last year. What they didn't address. The D-line and the 2nd WR. The biggest question mark is the QB. But that one has to play out.

They also didn't really address the age issue and the cap is still going to be a challenge going forward. But I don't think they made it much worse either

AL--Good recap. Another area of progress was in keeping future draft picks. They only gave up one future pick this off season. They've got all their day 1 picks next year, and are missing only 4 and 5 next year.

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 28, 2007 2:43 PM

There is a difference between a game changer and a guy who has a good game. I said Joe had his time in the sun. He was a good player. And I also said he could wind up back in a Skins uniform if injuries bite us.

But Griffin is the person that requires double teams, gets into the backfield, disrupts play after play. No one else on the D-line is a game changer. So its worth it to keep Griffin, even though he seems hurt every year.

Posted by: AL | August 28, 2007 2:48 PM

Say it ain't so, Joe!

Posted by: rb | August 28, 2007 2:50 PM

getting younger while keeping a balance of key veterans who can still play....the key is continue to find younger guys ( i don't care how) to push the vets out the door when thier play begins to slip or can't be counted on to stay healthy....our roster is somewhat younger and much deeper than last year....expect that to continue next yr as well as some vets that make this yrs squad almost certainly will be gone next...root for the uniforms

Posted by: Old School | August 28, 2007 2:58 PM

Well that's a real shame. I thought of Joe as a "Core Redskin." I guess the only solace is that this indicateds they're putting some sentimentality aside and only going with their best players. To that effect, Collins should be the second string QB with Brunell dropping to 3rd string. Also, Todd Wade should be permitted to earn his way into a starting tackle spot if he in fact deserves it.

Posted by: Joe the Fan | August 28, 2007 3:00 PM

Someone needs to pick up and carry the ukelele from here on out.

Big Joe will be missed. He was a warrior. He was a real Redskin. My guess is this is a Blache/triple G move and not a Gibbs move.

Poster that says no pass rush ever is weak is, sadly, correct. When the goal is to beat the Eagles, you have to be able to rattle McNabb. Otherwise, we are fighting for second in the East this year.

Posted by: Ukelele | August 28, 2007 3:23 PM

Posted by: Dik | August 28, 2007 3:51 PM

to the comment of "fighting for 2nd place in the east"----the only fight the redskins will be involved in is a fight with the giants for last place in the east and fighting for top 5 draft position. Things may look ok now but wait until there are 3 or 4 key players get hurt and there is absolutely NO DEPTH behind any of them. That is what 3rd, 4th and 5th round draft picks are for----depth

I'm sick and tired of us cutting locker room guys and blue collar guys taht do anything they are asked. Yes, Salave's was old but when he was healthy he was awesome. If Griffin can't stay healthy this yeah then that means we have 2 kids starting at DT. I can understand letting Golston start over Joe but don't release him. Get rid of Blaylock We don't need 10 RB's on the Roster we already have Portis, Betts and Cartwright.
