Wow. pretty surprising. I am sad to see him go. I thought he would be able to come in when Golston/griff get tired and be a force. On the other hand, I'm gald to see were giving some younger guys a chance to grow/produce.

I haven't seen push from our dline in ages, so it makes sense. He will be missed.

This frees up some decent money on the cap (1.8 mil). NOW can we get Cooley and Taylor both signed.

Too bad. I have a soft spot for guys named Joe.

Why didn't JLaC mention him. as far as line depth, I think we are 'good enough' to go into the season with Heyer, Wade, and Pucillo as our primary back ups....

We are thin at TE very, very much.

Have you been watching Griffin, Montgomery and Golston? I wouldn't exactly call any of them "weak".

Salavea only counted $893K towards this year's salary cap.

Still, the younger guys will be cheaper since most of them are low rounders or UDFA in their 1st 2-3 years of NFL experince.

We def need to sign Cooley. Taylor can wait until after the season.......

GAD, I think we're banking on the LBs and safeties bringing extra pressure, so the D line just has to be competent, not world-beaters.

Last season they weren't even competent, they were a big part of everything collapsing on our D. Now the key guys appear to be back healthy (Griff, Daniels) and the youngsters in the middle are coming along... it's not going to be a liability this season, mock my words!

Joe had his time in the sun. But the past few years have been one injury after another. Unlike Griff, Joe was never a game changer. The D-line is the weakest unit on the Skins and if Joe doesn't get signed elsewhere, I can see him coming back if depth is needed.

This is, of course, sad for Big Joe -- but it's a good sign for the Skins' D-line if the coaches feel that Montgomery can play a significant role this year.

Montgomery can be a beast. And played well against the Ravens.

Very sad to see Big Joe go. Real core Redskin and a genuine tough dude.

That said, I have been pleasantly surprised by the play of the d-tackle rotation of Griffin, Golston, and Montgomery. Only Griff is really a penetrator but then again Big Joe was not a penetrator either. He played the nose spot and tried to occupy blockers.

This would seem to bode well for Scarface Lorenzo Alexander.

Didn't Wiggins stink the place up the last couple of years?

What's wrong with Todd "carbonated" Yoder? I thought he caught at least one TD pass last year?

Bummer. This coming on the heels of ESPN reporting just days ago that the Redskins D-line would be much improved, partially because Salave'a looked like he was all he way back.

I think I agree with Jason on the guard situation. But I think they really want to keep Armstrong. I think Fabini is gone along with all the others. Lefotu still has an NFL Europe exemption at least for another week. Practice squad again that is rather disappointing I think.

Overall, the Skins have made pretty good efforts to fill their holes from last year. The O-line was pretty good and they added Kendall after losing Dockery. They already had good RBs one WR and TE.

On defense, they upgraded at LB and added talent in the secondary, both big problems last year. What they didn't address. The D-line and the 2nd WR. The biggest question mark is the QB. But that one has to play out.

They also didn't really address the age issue and the cap is still going to be a challenge going forward. But I don't think they made it much worse either

AL--Good recap. Another area of progress was in keeping future draft picks. They only gave up one future pick this off season. They've got all their day 1 picks next year, and are missing only 4 and 5 next year.

There is a difference between a game changer and a guy who has a good game. I said Joe had his time in the sun. He was a good player. And I also said he could wind up back in a Skins uniform if injuries bite us.

But Griffin is the person that requires double teams, gets into the backfield, disrupts play after play. No one else on the D-line is a game changer. So its worth it to keep Griffin, even though he seems hurt every year.

getting younger while keeping a balance of key veterans who can still play....the key is continue to find younger guys ( i don't care how) to push the vets out the door when thier play begins to slip or can't be counted on to stay healthy....our roster is somewhat younger and much deeper than last year....expect that to continue next yr as well as some vets that make this yrs squad almost certainly will be gone next...root for the uniforms

Well that's a real shame. I thought of Joe as a "Core Redskin." I guess the only solace is that this indicateds they're putting some sentimentality aside and only going with their best players. To that effect, Collins should be the second string QB with Brunell dropping to 3rd string. Also, Todd Wade should be permitted to earn his way into a starting tackle spot if he in fact deserves it.

Someone needs to pick up and carry the ukelele from here on out.
