Let Them Play! Let Them Play!

Who doesn't love the Bad News Bears by the way?

Anyway, if I was calling the shots we'd send everybody home, I'd plug 3 quotes from coach Joe into my story and get home at a half-decent hour. That's just me. That's how I roll.

But I know one dude who must be hoping against hope they start 'er up again ... Baby Brother Palmer.

You know Jordan is rooting for it. First of all, he was slated to get some work. And with the field really rough now you have to think maybe Joe would just pull Brunell if they did begin to play again and give the final 26 minutes to Palmer.

Either way, rough outing from Collins - albeit against a great D - and you can't say he ran away with the competition now. Brunell is up for a lot of action against Jax - I don't think Jason will play - and if he does a decent job you have to think Joe would go back to his guy. At least history would say that would be the case.

Running game stunk again - but I'm still not making too much of that with all of the personnel out right now - and overall in the first half, when it mattered, neither team was great. Baltimore's defense bottled them up and Washington's defense was okay again, but the lack of pressure and inability to force a turnover by the starters is beyond ridiculous now. This is as weird as weird can be and it has to stop if they're going to be good. Takeaway ratio is about as telling of a stat as there is.

Thought Landry looked good, but Fletcher was off and Rocky and Taylor were both guilty on the TD pass. They over-pursued and their youth showed there. Rocky was really tough on himself and sat with one knee on the field for like 10 seconds after Mason scored, kicking himself. He's still a baby, but Taylor was back to some bad habits, and he went for the low-percentage kill shot on McNair on that scramble, too, when he should have just stuck him in the midsection and gone for the ball rather than aim so high.

O Line was overmatched at times - as expected given who is out - and Suggs ate up Heyer three times, got inside of him easily and got at Collins. They attacked the right side with success as well. Samuels and Kendall should make a huge difference - they need Chris back at fullspeed as close to Week 1 as possible - and this line was too good last season to fall apart in 2007. It will take a few weeks to get in sync, though, with a left side that has never played together for a single live snap.

Montgomery looked pretty good in there and I liked the way they were moving Griffin around from the right and left side. With him in there they were tough (the TD came with him off and Montgomery and Golston working together a lot). Not having Springs changes things somewhat, too.

Otherwise, not much to see here. They still haven't called it. Lights have flickered off a few more times. Just a light rain right now. A dude in a Steelers Randle El jersey ran out acrss the field, stopped on the logo at the 50 to drop to his knees and kiss it, then took off into the stands on the opposite side where he ran out of gas.

Dude stopped, panted, turned with his back to face the cop charging from the opposite direction, assumed the universal go-ahead-and-handcuff-me-right-bleeping-now pose and got hauled away in cuffs.

That's all I got.

They should just call the game. No point in playing now. Its preseason, but the owners know that $$$$$$ is made when the game is delayed longer (ie. consessions)

I just want everyone to go home so I can curl up under my warm, dry blankie!

Posted by: FedEx Field | August 25, 2007 11:51 PM

as long as the D makes them punt from their own 20-30...skins have a decent enough special teams to make up for the lack of take aways...

Posted by: littery | August 25, 2007 11:52 PM

Baltimore's defense bottled them up and Washington's defense was okay again, but the lack of pressure and inability to force a turnover by the starters is beyond ridiculous now.

WTF!! JLC this is really getting out of hand. Skins D bottled up your offense as well. You D didn't have any turnovers. Your boy Gaither got run by Carter. Damn man come on be fair if you going to jump on our guys jump on yours as well.

Posted by: jm220 | August 25, 2007 11:52 PM

Great job, JLF! I'm in Cali, so I rely on you for my Redskins updates. Peace.

Posted by: Alan | August 25, 2007 11:52 PM

If the game gets called, League office should give us and the 'morinians an extra week to get down to 75. Only fair.

Posted by: Says me | August 25, 2007 11:54 PM

JLC is totally biased, jm. Glad you are seeing the light.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 25, 2007 11:54 PM

how do they decide where to place the burgundy seats in the club level...there doesn't seem to be any real pattern?

Posted by: Anonymous | August 25, 2007 11:54 PM

Really Jason? Stephon Heyer got beat three times. Well I should take your word since you know a lot about offensive lineman and you've coached in the league before. You studying film is like me saying that I could be the VP of Football Operations as a 19 year old. Shut up. Here's a stat for you: ZERO SACKS!

Posted by: Ryan Hunt | August 25, 2007 11:54 PM

Lack of turnovers? What about that defensive touchdown.
And really, it was/is only half a game.

Oh my god you are such a loser.

Alrighty the storm is bleeding into the blog again so I'm out and gonna watch 300.

Hope they call the game.

Sleep well peeploggers.

Posted by: sfskin | August 25, 2007 11:57 PM

I can't believe a reputable team like the Ravens would start an unproven left tackle in protecting their quarterback. Did you see Anthony Trucks blow by Jared Gaither and bust Kyle Boller in the head?

Ravens running game has been terrible as well, and Ray Lewis has looked off over the middle in pass coverage.

Just making sure your Ravens bias is pointed out.

Posted by: Jason LaCantWrite | August 25, 2007 11:57 PM

guys, you can't call jasno biased in the friggin preseason! when the team he's critiquing hasn't won a single game yet.

let's just wait and see. only 2 more weeks to go!

14-2!

Posted by: littery | August 25, 2007 11:57 PM

Jason you are the worst NFL analyst...oh wait you are a writer who is supposed to report facts instead of you "proffesional opinion". Joe Theismann said Collins looked pretty good and he played QB in the Super Bowl. Did you with your geeky glasses and your Boston Red Sox cap ever play in even a backyard game of football? No, you were the one everyone picked to hand the ball off to just to laugh at you when you got pummeled by the other team. Negative reporting makes for a better story but I think I will continue to stick with reports from NFL experts and analysts who have insight on how the game's supposed to be played.

Posted by: Ryan Hunt | August 25, 2007 11:58 PM

Gosh, Jasno, no mention of the monster hit on Boller or the fact that the starting D, on the whole, looked solid again or that Heyer (who looks a hell of a lot better than Gaither, by the way) and Pucillo held the vaunted Ravens D line and backers out of the backfield so Collins could thow the ball? Not that you're bias is showing, but the team you cover has a few things to report on, I think.

I don't expect you to pull punches but the blase thing is starting to get to me.

I have been a supporter of yours in the past but the post should pull you off when the skins have anything to do with the Ravens.

I just referred to tonight's storm-delayed game as a shabingus of a game.

Hey Jason, no one likes you!!! Which you are you used to no doubt. Firejlc.com is up and running. We want Howard Bryant back.

Posted by: Ryan Hunt | August 26, 2007 12:00 AM

Whatever are you talking about Littery? We won our first preseason game. And I agree with everyone who posted about the bias - it must stop!

Posted by: Lisa | August 26, 2007 12:01 AM

Maybe I missed a play while I was in the bathroom or something, but I thought Collins looked pretty solid. A couple of good passes down the sidelines (not all completed) and he looked calm in the pocket. Not outstanding but definatly not a "rough outing" from what I saw.

And with Samuals, Kendell, and Portis out, you can't really expect much from the running game vs the Ravens starters.

Posted by: Paul S. | August 26, 2007 12:01 AM

Cyndy,

Jasno's bias is getting to be intolerable. Please, is there an email address for someone we can contact?

Posted by: Anonymous | August 26, 2007 12:02 AM

Ryan Hunt stop with the personal attacks. That is so not cool.

Just keep doing what you're doing.

...and you come here? I mean, my most cogent analysis of the skins is that the girl in the car commercial is hot.

Posted by: cload and daggar | August 26, 2007 12:04 AM

I'm not exactly seeing negative bias. Mostly factual information. Skins starting D allowed an offensive touchdown. Ravens' starting D did not allow a touchdown. Skins won the game, but the points were from two FGs and a defensive turnover/defensive TD, from the combined efforts of three guys who are not on the starting D: Prioleau, Trucks, and Sartz.

Anthony Trucks, an undrafted free agent, who is most likely to be cut, but could possibly end up as a back up on special teams, blew by Gaither and delivered a crushing hit on Kyle Boller that led to the winning touchdown. Anthony Trucks is not known as a pass rushing linebacker. The Ravens gave up a 5th Round PICK in the 2008 draft for Gaither, who was declared ineligible for the draft because of poor grades.

One NFL Executive I've spoken to said, "Gaither has the size you dream about to be a left tackle, but, he is very slow off the ball and has no football intelligence. No one would put him in the lineup yet."

Posted by: jason lacantwrite | August 26, 2007 1:16 AM

This actually should have made a problem for the coaches ... cut downs to 75 occur on Tuesday. I guess it means their minds were already made up. Of course the key cuts aren't going to happen until after the last exhibition game.

Making that game all the more interesting after this one. Particularly given Jason's comments about Joe going back to Brunell. I don't see that happening. Brunell has had a terrible exhibition and training camp. Last time he stunk up the place like that Ramsey ended up starting before long. Last year it was Campbell. Gibbs knows he has gone to that well far too often. Sorry Jason but ain't going to happen. What may happen is that they may surprise everyone by signing some veteran from the final cut downs next week.

Posted by: periculum | August 26, 2007 1:16 AM

Jason what game were you watching! If the Skins had another minute they would have had a TD at the end of the half. Sorry but you have an issue with the LT...your seeing things that arent there!

Posted by: Anonymous | August 26, 2007 8:48 AM

I'm not here to attack, but it is frustrating for those of us who come here to get info and all you read is negative. I don't know if there is a bias or not but it is very disappointing. Most "hometown" writers at least try to highlite the positive.

Posted by: tommy | August 26, 2007 9:30 AM

Jason,

I went back and watched the game after reading your blog. Your a dope your observations are so off. I dont know where to start your whole blog is far off. By the way the sun thought McNair was under alot of pressure last night here is the link

Posted by: Doodle | August 26, 2007 10:03 AM

There in lies your problem Doodle, you actually watched the game to come to a conclusion. I don't know why anyone would watch the game and not have their own agenda!!! That makes no sense.

Posted by: steve | August 26, 2007 11:03 AM

Jason your coverage is getting a little too biased, the ravens defense was no better than our defense. We shut down their running game, you need to STFU!

Posted by: Anonymous | August 26, 2007 12:07 PM

Anthony Trucks ate Gaither's Lunch on that Sartz Touchdown. ANTHONY FREAKING TRUCKS. Gaither is GARBAGE. Give the Heyer thing a rest already, he's an undrafted rookie and hasn't allowed a sack all preseason. He's not the starter Jason, he's the backup because Samuels is injured. There aren't many backups that are pro bowlers, in fact i don't think there are any. Leave the kid alone and let him develop. Stop being a Ravens homer and stop rooting against the Redskins in everything that they do. More importantly stop being such a jackoff harping on garbage like this. You know you can talk about positive things, you aren't required to be negative all the time. We're not asking for fluff, we're asking for unbiased reporting. We understand that things aren't perfect, but you don't need to severely play up the negative side of things and severely downplay the positive.

P.S. You know absolutely nothing about football.

Posted by: Roy Harrison | August 26, 2007 12:17 PM

I agree with the above poster. What is all the hype around Gaithers. Why arent you bashing the Ravens for using a 5th rounder on this clutz. I have seen him twice now, last night and last week and he looks like bigfoot trying to play tackle. I think bigfoot would move better! Yet all you can do is pick on our LT. Question Jason.....doesnt Suggs give veteran good LT problems yet you have been harping on this kid for weeks. GET OFF THE SKINS BEAT! With this post it is obvious you cant write articles because your not seeing and understanding the game.

Posted by: Doodle | August 26, 2007 12:59 PM

JLC time at the post is limited. He has alienated almost the entire fan base for the team he covers. You write for the WASHINGTON Post, that does not mean everything has to be happy and good, but we don't want to hear GLOOM every time. Good bye Jason.

Anyone want the digits of that girl in the car commercial?

Posted by: got the digits | August 26, 2007 3:35 PM

With Springs out it becomes difficult to judge the secondary. Maybe the coverage isn't as bad as I thought before I realized he was not playing. Theres still hope for us

Posted by: congero | August 27, 2007 1:29 AM

Jason, I have never commented on here. However, I read your blog and your articles every day. I am trying to understand why you feel the need to be as negative as you are in your comemnts about the Redskins. I am a life long fan, and despite the previous years efforts, I truly believe that every year the Redskins have a chance to compete. Do I agree with every move they make, or personnel decision - no. However, I love the team and want them to do as well as possible. There are plenty of places to find all kinds of negative comments about the 'Skins. The last place I want to see it is in the Post. I think all anyone wants from you is information and insight - not overly negative opinions.

Posted by: lespaul | August 27, 2007 8:51 AM

I have to agree with jm220 and others that Jason's comparison of the two defenses is odd at best. He wrote:

"Baltimore's defense bottled them up and Washington's defense was okay again, but the lack of pressure and inability to force a turnover by the starters is beyond ridiculous now."

The game tape tells the following about the first-string defenses that played the first half:

Ravens gained 122 yards and had 7 points
Skins gained 120 yards and had 6 points

Additionally, the Ravens (and especially their defense) were flagged for many penalties leading to additional yardage not counted above which might have resuled in more points had we actually had our starting qb in there.

The defenses played to about as close to a draw as you could get. They were within 1 point and 2 yards of each other.

Lighten up, people! Back off!

I'm a hardcore fan, but I like hearing Jasno's opinions in his blog, even if they're not all supportive of the Skins.

Also, this is a BLOG, not a COLUMN. There is still a difference. I like hearing about the experience of being a reporter through the blog. If this were the column in the paper, I'd probably feel a little differently , but it's not. Relax folks!

Posted by: starbuck | August 27, 2007 4:39 PM

Thanks, Doodle, for the link to the Preston article in the Baltimore Sun -- which provides evidence that Jasno's not the only one who writes negative things about the hometown team.

Maybe that's part of "reporting," or the difference between working for the Redskins (writing for Redskins.com) and covering them.

Posted by: starbuck | August 27, 2007 4:47 PM

Starbuck,

You idiot..I never stated anything about JLC writing anything negative about the skins and I know the difference between reporting and redskin.com. My point was that his observations of the game were completely wrong...which they were!
