Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

No Go For Portis

Well, Clinton gets his wish - doesn't he always around here? - and won't be going. So he enters Week 1 off of 4 practices and that's it. After saying how Portis could have played the last three preseason games if need be, and playing everything down, the guy ends up missing basically the entire preseason save for like 5 practices. We'll see how that works out. I've said and written for a long time that Betts will play a big role this season, and I have to think he gets the bulk of the carries early on.

Also, Khary Campbell not in uniform (UPDATE: With a hamstring injury)

There is a chance they keep most of the defensive starters out of this thing, also save for Landry, and give a lot of work to the backups. With 3-4 jobs still open on that side of the ball (last CB, last safety, etc), it's a good way to go and the starters showed very well in the 3 previous games (sacks and turnovers aside).

Good news people! I've just come back from the doctors. He said that I'm don't have the dreaded Equine Flu which is ravaging the country at the moment.

Luckily for me, the flu only effects horses. Not those who are hung like horses!

Posted by: Littery @ milehigh | August 30, 2007 7:29 PM

Don't be duped - Portis will get 85% of the carries from the get-go.

Love how Buges just said on CSN that they aren't worried about the running game -- whoops, guess he didn't get the memo from Joe Jackson that they are supposed to say that they are very concerned about it.

Can't wait for Week 1.

Out.

Shoot I'd keep LaRon on the bench too.

Let's face it he's first string and has earned his spot (sorry PP).

Just cause a flight attendant leads you somewhere, doesn't mean you should follow her. Although usually it's the right move.

Litery,

I used to fly a lot. I solved the problem by holding my nose and trying to blow out. It equalized the pressure in the sinuses. It worked for me almost all the time. Good luck

Posted by: Cindy | August 30, 2007 8:10 PM

Saw what we needed to see. D held up in the first series and Campbell finishes with a perfect QB rating. Shows over ... time to go home.

Posted by: AL | August 30, 2007 8:10 PM

Portis' approval rating rivals that of President Bush. His reoccurring knee tendinitis has caused his ADP to plummet from the mid-second to the late-third round (31.3 Y! ADP). But don't be imperceptive. Whispers from Redskins insiders have described the injury as "overblown." More than likely, Gibbs has simply exercised extreme caution to ensure his star back is at or near 100 percent for the start of the season.

Don't be obtuse to Portis' saliva-inducing potential. Still only 25, the flamboyant tugboat is a gifted, tough inside runner who showcases electric acceleration through the hole and on the corners.

Outside of his impressive physical skills, the peripherals for a banner campaign are favorable. The Redskins' acquisition of veteran guard Pete Kendall from the Jets bolsters an already formidable offensive line. Also, Washington has a laughable schedule with 10 games against rushing defenses that ranked well outside the top 10 last year. Finally, throw in Jason Campbell's continued maturation and Al Saunders' explosive ground philosophy and Portis has the foundations to be a wolf in sheep's clothing.

Sure, Ladell Betts is a must handcuff. And, yes, he'll likely wrestle away 8-12 carries per game and see an expanded role until Portis proves fully operable. But look at the situation positively. Betts will ease Portis' load, which should keep the cursed No. 26 healthy and more productive. If you recall, the Redskins ran the ball 30.6 times per game last season. Even if Betts carried the rock 10 times per game, Portis would finish with 1,351 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns over a 16-game slate based on his 4.1 YPC and 0.87 TD/G averages from last year. Convinced he'll miss time? Using the same averages over 12 games - not including the likely 200-plus receiving yards he could feasibly rack - Portis would finish with 1,013 rushing yards and 10 scores. That's an average of 13.4 PPG, which would've ranked 13th among backs last year.

Heady owners looking to steal Portis for a six-pack of Mickey's must act now. In recent Yahoo! Plus league trades he's commanded thrifty returns, swapped straight up for Carnell Williams, Ahman Green and Hines Ward. For those yet to draft, he's worth the risk in the late second round in 12-team drafts. Fearless Forecast (13 games): 1,118 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns, 24 receptions, 225 receiving yards.

Posted by: Stumptown Chris | August 30, 2007 9:03 PM

I think there were three standout players among the question marks. First was Marcus Mason. He was running against a scrub defense, but what I liked about him was his ability to make a bunch of cutbacks to hit holes. I think he will at least make the practice squad, especially with Portis health questions. Second was Ryan Hoag. He had nice footwork when he made the catch in the end zone. But what I really liked about him was when Mason had one of his good runs, it was Hoag that was blocking several yards downfield. That's the sign of a player that wants to make the team. After blocking his man out of the picture, Hoag turned around and started blocking someone else. It was great work. I had no idea who that #18 was, so after that play I came back and found it was Hoag. The third player was LB Anthony Trucks. Always seemed to be around the ball. He actually made a good pass defense downfield like a CB. Grilliams likes those LBs that are quick enough to cover downfield. Overall, I'm pretty happy after the first half.

Posted by: Inigo Montoya | August 30, 2007 9:37 PM

got to agree with jm220... people will eat some crow in regards to Portis this year... at least I hope so, I drafted him in the 2nd round for fantasy football.

Bram said he spoke with JC after halftime. The knee feels great.

Chatting with Jon Wile, who does layout for us. He caught the latest epi of "Hard Knocks" last night...the one that features Rod Gardner getting cut. Sounds like must-see viewing....

redskinfan666 trust me he will have a big season. People (most who never played the game) are making way too much over this. He will be really sore come Monday and Tuesday but other than that. There really is nothing to worry about.

Well, Ini, if you took CP in round 2, I assume you went either RB or top-notch QB in the first. Either way, that's a great value pick.

RMilot,

A bunch of other dudes I know nothing about. LOL I thought I remembered them looking at that TE Ben Patrick, though, who was taken 10 picks after Palmer (and just before the Skins selected Tyler Ecker). Maybe they should have taken him with the LBP pick.

RMilot if you played then you would know you can go without playing in the games. It's not like CP forgot how to run. So, it's really silly for people to sit and say he is done because he didn't play in pre season.

Posted by: jm220 | August 30, 2007 9:56 PM

Let's compare ....

Jacksonville...Q. Gray 14/19 147 2 0
Washington ....J. Palmer 2/7 10 0 1

It's not missing the games that worries me. I'm talkin' bout . . . practice

Posted by: RMilot | August 30, 2007 9:57 PM

Nice pull Inigo. I grabbed Peyton first, and picked up CP early 3rd round. Nothing but laughter in the draft room.

I point to their schedule, half the teams had bottom tier ranked run defenses last year, so nice value pick? I like.

I am with you and old school baller jm220, CP is gonna light it up this year, it just feels right.

Posted by: Wes Mantooth | August 30, 2007 10:00 PM

RMilot he has practice. Remember practice is closed to reporters now. (go back a couple of post and read JLC words yourself) And the limit access that JLC did have he said CP was out there doing drills.

Posted by: jm220 | August 30, 2007 10:01 PM

Sure 'Palmer the #3' was dumb before this game, now it is just plain assinine. Collins getting no action. Huh?

QBs

1. JC
2a #8
2b Collins

Pratice squad Palmer

Posted by: bangkokben | August 30, 2007 10:01 PM

Wes....here's a question for you.

Does CP break 100 yards? What's CP's over/under?

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 30, 2007 10:01 PM

Has anybody seen rookie DE Justin Hickman do anything this preseason? He had nice stats at UCLA and I remember reading that his college coaches thought he had a chance to catch on.

Nah, I'd say under 100, especially against the Dolphins D. But we'll see. I'll put the o/u for CP at 80 total yards. Betts will get his.

Okay, only 3 NFLteams have had two backs with 1,000 yards...is this the year??

1972 Miami Dolphins
Larry Csonka - 1,117 yards on 213 carries
Mercury Morris - 1,000 yards on 190 carries

1976 Pittsburgh Steelers
Franco Harris - 1,128 yards on 289 carries
Rocky Bleier - 1,036 yards on 220 carries

1985 Cleveland Browns

Patriots sign punter Hanson, release Baugher

Aug. 30, 2007
CBSSports.com wire reports

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have signed veteran punter Chris Hanson and released first-year punter Danny Baugher.

The 30-year-old Hanson has 428 punts for 18,347 yards with the Green Bay Packers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has averaged 42.9 yards per punt.

He was released earlier this week by the New Orleans Saints.

The 22-year-old Baugher was signed to the Patriots' practice squad in October, then assigned to NFL Europa after the season.

It's going to be so sweet when Uncle Al finally cuts the offense loose in Week One. Remember in Rocky IV, when Drago's fighting Creed, and in the early rounds Drago is stumbling around the ring like an uncoordinated oaf? James Brown is singing, everybody's happy, America rules. Then Drago's trainer screams something in Russian and Drago transforms instantly into a killing machine? Yeah. Uncle Al's practicing his Russian, and the hammer drops September 9. Be afraid, NFL.

Wow does BBP suck. Brunell and Collins aren't going anywhere. I don't care who is #2 or #3 between them, as long as it's not the rookie.

Marcus Mason and Ryan Hoag...good chances to stick around.

Kost- I did many seconds of research earlier today for the fantasy football draft. To save you and your mates the hassle...don't bother drafting: Peyton Manning, LT, Steven Jackson, or Larry Johnson in the 1st 4 rounds. They're worthless. Won't help your team at all. No point wasting a pick on any of them. No sir. Hope that helps your planning!

Well, I'm glad the pre-season is completed.
Up 14-3 I was feeling pretty good about tonight, but then the bottom seemed to fall out... goodness, those last two quarters were ugly.

but my main concern was answered positively.
I did not want JC in there long, nor CP in there at all.

I really liked the first team D not in there at all. GW probably said "My starters are set; I know what I want and got. Let's rest them and play all reserves and make evaluation for the last 3 or 4 roster spots on D.

Posted by: Redskin Ray | August 30, 2007 10:35 PM

Why have the Skins' second/third teamers and free agent players performed so poorly over the past 3 years?

That, to me, is a troubling sign. They appear to be poorly coached and prepared.

Granted, 95% of them will be cut. But that 5% can, for some teams, be an important part of a team.

And the Skins just aren't getting that 5% help.

Posted by: SteveMG | August 30, 2007 10:35 PM

Pretty pathetic performance by the 4th string QB. Obviously the season is lost after a 31-14 drubbing by a mediocre Jville team. There's always next year......

Posted by: Fredskins | August 30, 2007 10:38 PM

just considering how badly I felt after last year's pre-seaon.
Now compare it to this year.
At least I know we will be competitive again as opposed to last year.

Heads up everyone, things are looking much better than last year.

It is a WUSA exclusive JLaC dosen't know about it yet....

"All you CP haters. What are you doing to do when he start balling like before? Some of you are such fair weather fans. You guys will be the same one praising him"

If he does, and he may, he will screw up fumble drop passes etc first. Just like Jordan Palmer with his very first action ... again
Portis is NOT LaDamian Tomlinson. NOT, NOT, NOT. He is not a Larry Brown, he is not a Riggins he is not a Byner. He needs these preseason games to tune up and get in synch with his offense. Without that he becomes a huge risk.

Posted by: Uncle Spence | August 30, 2007 10:51 PM

Stop with Larry Brown stuff. Larry Brown is no Clinto Portis! He had a few great seasons, like Terrel Davis but is no where near the top ten Redskins! Be his fan but stop making CP out to be some chump because he missed preseason. The dude doesn't fumble.

Posted by: bangkokben | August 30, 2007 10:51 PM

Collins cleary beat out Brunello for #2 veteran backup status, so getting a late round draft pick for Brunell is prudent...but the problem is the #3 looked really bad tonight... possibly have to burn another draft pick next year on QB

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 30, 2007 10:52 PM

They must have drugged and tied up Gibbs to make that trade. I like it. Something for nothing.

Posted by: Fredskins | August 30, 2007 10:52 PM

I am curious to see how JLC spins the Brunell trade into another FO shabingus

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 30, 2007 10:54 PM

More goood news. Getting rid of that weak t*t arm Brunell AND picking up a draft pick ...Shrewd move.

Posted by: k Squared | August 30, 2007 10:55 PM

I personally believe the U.S. Americans do not support Mark Brunell because some people out there in our nation don't have Mark Brunell and I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq everywhere like such as and I believe they should our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S. or should help South Africa or should help the Iraq and Asian countries so we will be able to build up our Mark Brunell for us.

Posted by: Miss Teen South Carolina | August 30, 2007 10:56 PM

Anyone know what the cap implications would be if Brunell is shipped off? More $$ for Cooley?

Posted by: LaRon | August 30, 2007 10:56 PM

Trading Brunell would be a stupid move - after Collins we have NOBODY! Poor Palmer just ain't ready....

Posted by: Lisa | August 30, 2007 10:57 PM

I'm sure Jeff George would be available if it came to a choice of him or LBP

Posted by: Dante | August 30, 2007 10:58 PM

Lisa - half the teams in the league only keep 2 QBs on the 53 man roster

Posted by: 4th via Home Floor | August 30, 2007 10:58 PM

"Why have the Skins' second/third teamers and free agent players performed so poorly over the past 3 years?

I'll take the glass-half-full stance here. NO they are actually performing much, much better this year. We note that one of the TDs was by baby Palmer and not the defense. Baby Palmer also helped put them in bad field position. It was all okay truth be told.

Now the coaches know what they have absorbed and what they still need to work on with the youngsters. They also know they have vets like Cornelius Griffin, Philip Daniels, Randall Godfrey,
London Fletcher, and Shawn Springs to help them get there from here. The Redskins defenses of the past have always thrived on the right mixture of youth and veteran experience to be effective. Its the same now, and there will be much better added depth.

On the offense. They now have an inkling of where the line is with its new configuration. Heyer continues to improve. Now it comes down to the subs. Who will end up backing up the starters? At wide receiver it looks like Ryan Hoag made a statement to pull away from the pack. Maybe that was enough?

At running back they've had a good look at Marcus Mason.

At quarterback it looks Brunell proves to be the better man despite the agile brain of Todd Collins. Did Jordan Palmer show
enough to be kept around? He threw a lot of int's in college too.

At tight end we saw some new guys in there.

So now its up to the coaches to look at what they've got versus what they might find on the waiver wire.

Posted by: periculum | August 30, 2007 10:58 PM

I am watching the Raiders/Seahawks game right now and Seneca Wallace is at QB. They also haven't mentioned the trade yet, but I certainly can see why they would want to get him involved with the offense more, as he will probably be a great TE.

Posted by: Stumptown Chris | August 30, 2007 10:59 PM

Lisa,

If Campbell AND Collins go down...well, let's not go down that road.

I shudder everytime I think of the "Body Bag" game.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 30, 2007 10:59 PM

Let's be honest, any team that gets down to their 3rd string qb is not going anywhere anyway. Getting back a pick for one you just gave up to get a better player (Kendall), who will start, is a must.

Posted by: k Squared | August 30, 2007 11:00 PM

It's really strange to me that Sportsnet has mentioned nothing about the Brunell trade rumor - since they are practically in bed with the Skins....but maybe that is why.

Posted by: Lisa | August 30, 2007 11:00 PM

Brunell to Seattle? We need recon, JLC!

Posted by: Bryan | August 30, 2007 11:00 PM

Can we keep Marcus Mason? That dude can play.

Posted by: JustMe | August 30, 2007 11:02 PM

I agree with Miss South Caribbean...we should all believe in the fourth string forward to help eliminate racial geographing. That would make not voting that much easier.

Posted by: Fredskins | August 30, 2007 11:02 PM

Brunell to Seattle, No way? Unless it its a 3-way with Atlanta.

Posted by: periculum | August 30, 2007 11:02 PM

Palmer was terrible, but the good news is that it's been years since we've ever had to use a third QB. Even under a worst case scenario and both Campbell and Collins gets hurt, we can still go with Randel El before Palmer.

Posted by: Uncle Spence | August 30, 2007 11:06 PM

So now Bram Weinstein says that Joe Gibbs has firmly and flatly denied that the Brunell trade is on. JLC, where are you?

Posted by: LaRon | August 30, 2007 11:07 PM

Brunell to Seatle makes sense for the Seahawks. They have no one behind Hassleback, he's a local guy (UW) and they have a good chance at the post season.

Atlanta makes no sense, have two journeymen and no expectations. Coach can get a pass for this year and his guy (the guy from Louisville) next year.

Peri, admit it. You are out of you mind.

Posted by: bangkokben | August 30, 2007 11:08 PM

A dark day in Redskins history...

The Body Bag Game (November 12, 1990, Washington Redskins vs. Philadelphia Eagles, Monday Night Football)
In the days leading to the clash, Eagles head coach Buddy Ryan threatened a beating so severe that "they'll have to be carted off in body bags." Ryan's words were prophetic. The Eagles defense scored three touchdowns in a 28-14 win and knocked nine Redskins out of the game, including two quarterbacks. The Redskins finished with running back-returner Brian Mitchell playing quarterback.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 30, 2007 11:09 PM

Hmmm I wonder? I wonder if the Danny pulled the rug out from under Gibbs the way he has so often done with all of his past coaches.

Breaking news from Channel 9 Sports: Gibbs resigns.

Posted by: periculum | August 30, 2007 11:09 PM

I still don't get why they cut Bramlet so early. He didn't count against the roster since he was Europa and he can't have been all that expensive. Given that Palmer has always been considered a project and Bramlet had experience, I'm really surprised. Wonder if there is a story somewhere there. He seemed to catch on quickly enough down in Atlanta...

Posted by: NewMexSkin | August 30, 2007 11:10 PM

Wanted to give him a chance to catch on play somewhere. He clearly wasn't in their plans.

I'll give u that when louisville had 70 8 min into the 3rd quarter

Posted by: Uncle Spence | August 30, 2007 11:16 PM

I actually think there may be something to the trade rumor. While Sportsnet has not mentioned anything about it in the Post Game Show (and they are on top of everything Skins) they were talking about cuts and mentioned "will the Skins keep 3 QBs?" Will Mark Brunell still be here? Which leads me to believe they know something but have been asked to keep quiet by the Skins. Gibbs would never trade Brunell away unless Brunell wanted to go...and Seattle is where Brunell is from and would want to go.

Posted by: Lisa | August 30, 2007 11:20 PM

Wha' happened??

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 30, 2007 11:20 PM

the skins don't own comcast by the way
they probably just haven't confirmed it and are waiting to do so
but chick did refer to "whether brunell would be here or not"

Posted by: Anonymous | August 30, 2007 11:22 PM

Well, on Channel 9 they did say Brunell was aware of the move and that he was happy about it. They mentioned him going to college in Washington, of course, and that he still had lots of family there. Plus, there would be no competition there for him if Matt Hasselbeck was injured. Seneca Wallace is a good athlete, but not such a good QB.

NOT BREAKING NEWS
There is no trade in the works involving Brunell. Earlier in the day there was an inquiry by the Seahawks. Sources close to Brunell said the veteran had been told nothing about a trade being completed, or even close, after the game. Collins has outplayed him this preseason, but the other option for a third quarterback -- rookie Jordan Palmer -- is nowhere close to being ready for the NFL and went 2-for-8 for 10 yards with an interception (returned for a touchdown) and a rating of 0.0 in more than a half of work.

Posted by: Cindy | August 30, 2007 11:34 PM

As for the anonymous person who wonders where Jason is...he's working the locker room, refiling his story and making some calls.

Posted by: Cindy | August 30, 2007 11:35 PM

Bramlet was cut because not only was he 'not in their plans,' but because they had FIVE QBs. You can't keep a guy on the roster to just stand around in practice.

Posted by: bangkokben | August 30, 2007 11:37 PM

A quick thanks to those who blogged the important first quarter plays - I just got home and ran through the comments and don't even need to read a recap.

As for Brunell, still just a rumor, so Jasno won't give us any firm info. PFT, unreliable as they are, isn't even reporting the rumor yet.

I'm still wondering about that flight attendant who stuck Littery in an airplane toilet for an hour. How bad would that headache have to be for you to stay in there?

Posted by: mugamack | August 30, 2007 11:37 PM

I said this earlier today -- about eight threads back, I think -- but the dropoff from Campbell to anybody, anybody, is so severe that I think it hardly matters who the #2 and #3 QBs are. Just like the Colts and a handful of other teams, our eggs are in one basket.

Here's hoping Soup stays upright. Man, do we need him.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 30, 2007 11:39 PM

Wow, Seattle is a bit out of left field isn't it. But seriously, if the Seahawks plan is to get an athletic guy like Seneca Wallace into the game more, (which makes sense)don't you think it would've been a good idea to start putting that process into place during the start of the pre-season? It's not like they didn't know how good he was, didn't they use him as a WR against us in the playoffs more than a year ago??

Posted by: kost52 | August 30, 2007 11:39 PM

Actually, refiling two stories.

I love littery/dealer like my crazy cousin who makes me kind of nervous at family reunions. But I can totally, totally see a flight attendant suggesting he take a seat in the loo for the duration of the flight.

Guessing there wasn't an air marshal on board who could take him down with a tranquilizer dart.

Aha!

Mike Holmgren, formerly known as a genius, sees the utterly brilliant magic that Gibbs, formerly known as a genius, and Saunders, known more recently than either of them as a genius, have cooked up with ARE! And he wants a piece of that!

Seneca Wallace is his ARE, the 'good' Hasselback is his Soup, and now Brunell can be his Todd Collins!

Or something!

It's all making sense!

Nate, I came close to giving my first Thumbs Down last night! It was called Blowhard Pale, was a very different taste, my g/f said it was very sweet. Only just passed. Maybe I should be giving them a grade out of 10.

Posted by: kost52 | August 31, 2007 12:07 AM

Just watched the game highlights on Sportscenter. A thing of beauty. They just showed Campbell going 5 for 5. All 5 passes. No other plays from the game. Just an "oh, yeah, they got beat, but so what, Jason Campbell went 17 for 27 in the preseason." The end.

Jags fans won't be happy, but the Skins starting offense looked like a force. Now i'm rooting for a Top 10 for the ARE pass.

Posted by: mugamack | August 31, 2007 12:11 AM

I'm sure this has been discussed already up here, but I have to talk about the ESPN Monday Night Football ad.

Hearing that music as they show a shot of Landry and Samuels getting ready to run out of the tunnel out on to the field gets the blood pumping.

But where did they get that shot from?

Posted by: mugamack | August 31, 2007 12:18 AM

5 for 5 for six. Anyone else think Soup might not be ready? Doesn't mean he won't have some bad games, but did you see the 3 step drop and the touch he had to lay that ball right in ARE's hands? Man oh man, this man can play.

Posted by: Willie | August 31, 2007 12:30 AM

Marcus Mason reminds me of Emmitt Smith. Great feet. Great eyes. Does he have to pass thru waivers before being put on a practice squad? If so, I'd worry that someone's going to claim him.

Posted by: patrickhenry | August 31, 2007 12:34 AM

#26 will carry this offense again in '07 like he did in '05, in my very humble opinion.
Clinton Portis is a MAN.

Posted by: Willie | August 31, 2007 12:43 AM

As ARE said after the game, Soup just put the ball up there - ARE went in got it.

That pass was actually pretty dangerous.

Did Pretty Boy play tonight?

Posted by: mugamack | August 31, 2007 12:50 AM

So at the end of the Seahawks/Raiders game, they interviewed Seneca Wallace since he played a majority of the game.

And the final question, from Warren Moon, who does the broadcasts with the local network, asked Seneca if he would love to play a position other then QB. The smile that spread across Seneca's face was more then a simple: "Sure-I'll-play-anywhere" look. It looked like he knew something more and the tone in Warren's voice seemed like he knew something more too...

Just saying...

Trey: "Alright, here we go, Redskins at Jaguars, Jason Campbell starting at quarterback"

Sean: "Yeah, he was hurt, but NOBODY puts Baby in the corner, Trey"

Trey: "Well, I didn't know his nickname was Baby!"

Sean: (hearty laughter at his own cleverness)

Eric: "You know what? I like what he's doing right now."

Trey: "Well, you find Cooley, that's going to help ya... And then, second and 7, Campbell avoids the pressure..."

Sean: "Niiiiice!"

Trey: "...out to fullback Mark [sic] Sellers, and a - FIRST DOWN!"

Trey: "...ANTWAN RANDLE EL!!!"

Eric: "Nice call!"

Sean: "That's good"

Trey: "In his only series, Campbell perfect, 5-for-5, meaning..."

Sean: "Get him out!"

Trey: (muttering) Jags win.

NEVER MIND: Adding intrigue to injury in the first half was an erroneous report by a Washington, D.C., TV station that said the Seahawks had completed a trade for veteran quarterback Mark Brunell, the former Washington Husky.

A Seahawks spokesman denied that a deal had been made and the TV station later retracted its own report. (Seattle P-I)

Posted by: The Crickets | August 31, 2007 3:14 AM

Harumph. I was watching the Haber interview Brunell after the game, at work, with the sound on mute, but I thought I read Brunell's lips to say something about "I've been proud to wear this uniform" as he tugged on the front of his jersey. Thought that meant it was curtains or crickets.

Nate,

Tell it like it is, Reverend Nate. Amen.

They could trade Brunell AND Collins and it wouldn't affect where the team ends up (provided they make Randle El the #2). It's a big drop off after Campbell, but partly that's because Campbell's so good. There's no dropoff from Brunell to Collins or Collins to Brunell.

I think it's hilarious that people were calling for JLC's head last night for not posting on the blog 30 minutes after the game... ARE YOU SERIOUS?

30 minutes, heck 90 minutes, after the game, the dude is still in the locker room, talking to players or writing his article for the morning paper, etc. This blog is probably #43 on his list of priorities, yet he and Cindy still make it a point to give us "insider" news on a pretty regular basis.

Give the guy a break. PLEASE!

As far as Brunell goes, I'm 50/50 on a trade. 99% of the time a team never makes it to their 3rd string QB during a given season, plus we have BBP/Randle-El as emergency QB's. On the flip side, I'd be interested to see the pick Seattle is offering us, as well as the cap ramifications of a trade. I know that is not going to pretty.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | August 31, 2007 7:51 AM

I know, I know, easy for me to be an armchair GM and all, but cap space be damned!

I'd sweeten the deal by sending the Shehawks our third round pick in '08, two ham sandwiches AND a maple bar, if that's what it took to get Brunell into someone else's uniform this week.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 31, 2007 8:20 AM

Had an interesting time at Champions last night... at least it used to be called champions in Rockville.

Watched the game, then there was some house poker going on. So I sat in on the low table, and then won to the next table.

First hand I pull a card on the river all-in, and drop this other skins fan to a couple chips.

Man I felt bad doing that to my bretheren. So I asked him if he blogs, and he said yeah... on ES.

Now I dont feel so bad. I got busted out later but I tried to sway him to switch sides... we will see.

Posted by: Zebra | August 31, 2007 8:20 AM

I find it utterly staggering that anybody, anybody would even consider trading anything for Brunell.

Do these people not have access to game footage from the 2005 and 2006 seasons?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 31, 2007 8:23 AM

Nate I am 50/50 on trading Brunell. After watching the game highlights on redskins.com. LBP look really bad but the other side is when was the last time a team lost 2 qb's in a season.

Posted by: jm220 | August 31, 2007 8:27 AM

Zebra, it's been so long since any of our teams were or even looked like champions that DC can't even have a sports bar called Champions anymore?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 31, 2007 8:27 AM

On Mike & Mike this a.m., they were briefly discussing the NFC East and both thought that the 'Skins were still 4th in the division. Weren't saying they were awful, but they just don't see them stepping up this year. I say nice to fly under the radar for awhile....

Posted by: Montana'Skins Fan | August 31, 2007 8:28 AM

Gotcha, jm220, right as usual. I'm just stunned that anybody, no matter how dire straits they may be in, would consider trading for this guy.

And us getting anything for him in return? That would be simply incredible.

In any event, it hasn't happened yet, but I did pack a ham sandwich with my lunch just in case.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 31, 2007 8:29 AM

Nate
If they are willing to give a draft pick for him is the only reason for 50% for trading him. Face it this is his last year. If we could get something for him makes you want to pull the trigger.

Posted by: jm220 | August 31, 2007 8:34 AM

Yeah Nate;

It is called Winston Billiards and Cafe.

Do not go there.

There were two pull down screens for projectors to watch the game. With the poker tourney there, only one was right in front of the table peeps were eating and drinking at.

So about 12 people were buying food and beer to watch the game right in front of them.

All of a sudden, they change the channel to the Tulsa UL-Monroe game. We asked what was up and they said one guy at the bar wanted to watch it.

Now the other pull down was still on the skins. but it was across the way, with the poker tourney in between us and the screen. So peeps were blocking the screen frequently.

They pulled down another screen that was less obstructed, but not in front of all of their patrons.

So, long story long, we asked the bar manager why one person overrides 12, and he said that the TV in front of us is linked to the one at the bar in front of the guy who wanted to watch tulsa. Bull Shti...

So that place can go f itself, never go there.

Skins looked good last night. JC looked very confortable out there.

What I liked best he was hitting his second and third option in Cooley and Sellers.

What I don't like is he was hitting his second and third recievers.....hopefully our WR's can get open more often like ARE did on the TD.

Those Dink and Dunk will serve us fine provided our running game takes off. Gibbs cut his teeth with power running and short passes then bombs over the top when the D cheated.

Oh man, three and out then TD got me fired up.... Now for the games that count.

Brunell, fighting for the No. 2 quarterback job, was the subject of an inquiry by the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday, sources said, but no deal was completed after Washington's 31-14 loss to the Jaguars at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. The Redskins could still deal him with roster cuts looming Saturday -- Atlanta expressed some interest weeks ago -- although the market for the 36-year-old is not deep.
