Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Pete Kendall To The Rescue

The Redskins have acquired guard Pete Kendall from the New York Jets to fill their void at left guard, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Kendall, who has endured a rocky relationship with Jets management in recent years, is a smart, capable veteran who can replace departed free agent Derrick Dockery. He can play all three interior positions but the Redskins have an immediate need at left guard, with tackle Todd Wade struggling to make the transition to that position, and relying on reserve Mike Pucillo in that spot in last week's preseason game.

Kendall, who turns 34 next month, had begin working with the Jets starters again in recent weeks, and over the weekend teams that inquired about his availability were told that New York planned to keep him. However, the Redskins were eager to firm up the left side of their line - quarterback Jason Campbell was nearly lost for the season due to a hit Saturday night and could miss the remainder of the preseason - and Kendall was considered the best option available.

Kendall (6-5, 292) is in his 12th year and spent the last 4 with the Jets and was a first round pick by Seattle in 1996. He has started 156 games.

Three NFL executives who scouted the Redskins over the weekend all came to the same conclusion about Washington's issues at left guard, and time was running out for Wade to make the transition. Now, with Kendall here, Wade could go back to being a reserve tackle if need be - Pro Bowl left tackle Chris Samuels has missed nearly the entire preseason with a knee injury - and Washington's depth on the line - considered a major deficiency by many scouts - is much improved.

The Redskins have been averse to trading any more 2008 draft picks - their 4th rounder is already gone from last year's acquisition of TJ Duckett - and I have not been able to nail down if they gave up a 4th or a 5th in 2009, but it's believed to be one of those two picks. They gave Kendall a $1 million raise as part of the deal as well, so he'll make $2.7 million this season. Kendall has played previously for Seattle, Arizona and New York.

Kendall is not here yet and must still pass a physical, but that looks like a mere formality at this point.

Good move by the Skins and one, frankly, they had to do because of the position they were in. Like people told me over the weekend, they were asking for trouble with the combinations they had.

Bye bye Cooley

ITA

Good move by the skins. I believe in December, we'll look back on this as a coup. We've weakened a team that we play, and have acquired a good player.

Cooley is next to be takin care of

Posted by: Uncle Spence | August 23, 2007 11:52 AM

Great news. At the least we now have improved our depth on the line.

Posted by: Dante | August 23, 2007 11:52 AM

Greg(boston),

I doubt we have that weakened the jets if they thought so highly of kendall as to give him up for a 4-5th rounder in 09

Posted by: Dante | August 23, 2007 11:53 AM

Great!
That should make JC feel a little better.

Posted by: CoSkins | August 23, 2007 11:53 AM

Cooley's not going anywhere.

Left side of the line def needed shoring up.

Dare I say Joseph Jackson Gibbs owes Jasno an apology?!

Posted by: 4-12 | August 23, 2007 11:53 AM

They should've thrown Brunell in there.

Posted by: etrod | August 23, 2007 11:54 AM

The problem here is that future is NOT now. Campbell will take time to develop. By 2009, both Kendall and the 4th will be gone. He's 34 for cryin' out loud. Gibbs is desperate and is indeed mortgaging the future.

Upside - Campbell would have been killed by week 4 without help.

Posted by: GAD | August 23, 2007 11:54 AM

4-12 does this mean you can at least change to 5-11 now?

After Kendall's contract is added to the cap, Skins should still have 3 or 4MM to work with to get Cooley's deal done.

And there's still the possibility (albeit slim in my mind) of the team unloading Brunell or restructuring a guy with a fairly high base salary number like Rabach.

Trust me, the Cooley deal is not being held up because of lack of cap room.

A coup for the front office. How many more of these do they have to pull off before we give them credit for being on a roll?

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 23, 2007 11:56 AM

A 4th in 2009 is like a 5th in 2008 - very good deal for a quality offensive lineman who will only cost $2.7 million in 2008 salary.

I love this deal.

I like the fact that the trade was with the Jets. Deals with them tend to work out in our favor.

Posted by: etrod | August 23, 2007 11:59 AM

Jets get a 4th round pick for an old player who would have been cut = good FO.

Bengals get a starting LB for nothing = good FO.

Redskins give up a starting quality LB for nothing and a draft pick for a player that would have been cut and able to sign for nothing = horrible FO.

Posted by: Our FO Stinks!! / Captain Obvious | August 23, 2007 11:59 AM

Kendall can play for at least 3 years, if would like.

Anywhere under $4 Mil a year salary for a starting interior lineman who isn't in his rookie contract is a good deal now-a-days.......

Posted by: 4th | August 23, 2007 12:00 PM

All I can say is this is a GREAT, GREAT, and did I mention GREAT move. Depth all over the line now. The only thing that could make this move not be GREAT is if for some reason they give him more than 2.7 this year or next. He was signed for three seasons for 6.1 now 7.1 million. Think about it, he is ranked higher than Dockery but Dockery was paid 49 million.

Posted by: Ryan | August 23, 2007 12:01 PM

Dante, in the modern nfl players worth is not wedded to what picks you get in return....ie randy moss to Pats...

this was a contract/worn out welcome issue w/team....i live in nyc and kendell v jets has been playing out in papers for 6 months....

this is a good move, even "hater janso"

It was funny to see coach Joe get worked up about Jasno's article. He was printing the *opinions* of other NFL folks.

Seem to mean coach Joe thought somehow those opinions were represented as his own and he wanted to clarify that. Weird how touchy he was about the subject though.

In any case, in the end the O-line looks in better shape and all this is water under the bridge.

Posted by: Daddy-OO | August 23, 2007 12:02 PM

I have it on good authority that that was not THE Captain Obvious, but some random Skin hater who doesn't know that Rocky was going to be starting instead of Lemar. Doesn't really look like Lemar will start either, but the Bengals apparently need an experienced LB for special teams and Marvin Lewis is the guy who elevated Lemar's play to begin with. Good for Lemar!

Posted by: chris laRry | August 23, 2007 12:02 PM

Hail to em- Yes the article was mostly about Heyer. But it was also about the whole left side of the line. Here's a refresher clip from the article:

"Pucillo was signed with a reserve role in mind, and two league scouts said Wade struggles to keep his body low while blocking even at tackle and question whether he will adequately adjust to guard with just three weeks left in the preseason.

"They've got a gaping hole at left guard," one personnel executive said. "They have major depth problems on the offensive line, and they're running out of time."

First Jets get a good deal TRUE! But Kendall was NOT going to be cut.
Second - Marshall is small, hurt, and his best is behind him, he would not have started here.
Third - Marshall does not equal starting caliber anymore, and Kendell was NOT going to be cut.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 23, 2007 12:04 PM

Good move and good value for a 2009 pick which other reports say is conditional so its a 4th round at worst but could be less.

Gives us one of the better starting lines in the NFL with Samuels, Kendall, Rabach, Thomas and Jansen (with Wade pushing Jansen for the start at RT). Depth is decent as well.

One hole on the O' filled - all we need now is a legit #2 WR ........

Posted by: Martin C | August 23, 2007 12:04 PM

Thanks for confirming the trade JLC. Doesn't sting as much if it is a 5th. Good move by the FO.

Posted by: jm220 | August 23, 2007 12:04 PM

Our FO Stinks--

Wrong, dude. Marshall was not a starting quality LB, or he would be starting here. The man was weak last year as a starter and the 'Skins had to upgrade, remember? The 'Skins shopped him, and they couldn't get a pick for him.

As to the guard, he wasn't going to be cut by the Jets -- he was a valuable and cheap starting quality guard. And, he clearly is starting quality -- he's going to be starting for the 'Skins.

KENDELL WAS NOT GETTIN CUT BY JETS MORON, KNOW THE LEAGUE FOOL!!!

He was undercontract, claimed J-E-T-S renegged on promise to restructure. If they kept him, which they would have, he would start...but be cranky...

the jets were sick of dealing and wanted some value before it got uglier or he would have walked after this year....

this def weakens the jets, but if they werent gonna pay him their hands were tied...

REPEAT I LIVE IN NYC AND FOLLOWED THIS STORY...

Posted by: chris laRry | August 23, 2007 12:09 PM

Luckily I'd say boo to giving up another draft pick, but this needed to be done.

For God sakes, if our future quarterback never gets a chance to shine, then we are in deep trouble. I like this move. This is the one major area of concern for me. I like the way the rest of the team has looked so far this preseason, but the O Line has scared me.

The Redskins can make up for it by drafting nothing but O linemen and D Linemen next year.

Posted by: Hail to 'em | August 23, 2007 12:09 PM

This has the makings of a quality move. Anything that shores up the O-line is needed. Everyone agrees that the O-line is our biggest deficiency, so how can ppl be upset???? Remember, Soups is our future and we have to protect him. A future 4th or 5th rounder is not much to give up for a projected starter. With Samuels coming back and Cooley a viable option for Soups again (and the vaunted defense!!), I think 10-6 is easily achievable.

YOU CAN USE THE CAPS LOCK KEY ALL YOU WANT BUT OUR FRONT OFFICE STILL SUCKS!!

Any halfway decent front office would have had Dock signed to an extension by the middle of last year for half the money that the Bills gave him and we would have never been in this situation. Always giving up draft picks, signing old players who are only around for a couple years, not re-signing their own young talent (bye bye Cooley and Taylor), giving up the house for 3 FA's that haven't done anything, etc.

FACE IT - OUR FRONT OFFICE SUCKS AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT!!

"Redskins give up a starting quality LB for nothing and a draft pick for a player that would have been cut and able to sign for nothing = horrible FO"

Captain, I've been critical of our front office, too (I'm still thankful the Bears didn't bite on our offer for Briggs last spring because Rocky will be great at Briggs' position and, if they had made the deal, bye-bye Landry), but with these last two moves, they've gotten it right. According to the Jets' beat writer, there were multiple teams interested in acquiring Kendall, so he wouldn't have been cut. We acquire a quality starting player (albeit a 33 year old one) at a position of great need for a fourth round pick in '09. This pick could turn out to be a good young player in a few years, but could also turn out to be a bust. What has Cerrato's track record been with middle round picks? Not too good, I'll bet. I'm down with this deal.

Re: Marshall, he was part of the problem last year, and after he was out-performed by McIntosh and the rookie LBs this year, the 'Skins probably did him a favor by cutting him now so he could catch on with another team. No big loss.

Posted by: rbpalmer | August 23, 2007 12:24 PM

F'ing great move. They should have done it sooner. I hate our FO and question what they do often but I am not gonna argue with this one to shore up the OL, drafting Landry and giving RockyMac a shot by passing on Briggs. I feel much better about our prospects for this year now.

And it's not just me thinks this way from what I can see. I'll argue ANY point you want on sports with you anywhere you want, and win or lose buy you a beer afterwards. It's the same way I was brought up to PLAY sports - you play flat out and knock lumps out of each other, then you share a beer afterwards.

Frankly all this testy calling out is the 'hand job' stuff to me. I suspect that people would not talk to one another this way in person, so why do it here?

It just goes to show you how people complain about anything. Marshall, although a team favorite. was not that good. He had a sense that he was going to be cut. I don't think he will start but will be used for special teams. It is hard to imagine anyone trading anything for special teams player that is not kicker, punter, or return man. What could we have gotten for Marshall? A seventh rounder? I doubt it. If you think we would have gotten more than that you are smoking more crack than the FO.

Kendall was a necessity. Do I wish he was younger? Sure. Yet, we had a glaring hole at guard position. It would have been a long season with that hole in our line. Cambell might have not made it through the year and even worse may have become shell-shocked. Even worse he could have a Theisman type injury which would hurt each and everyone of us to watch. Several teams were interested in him including the Dolphins. We had to trade to get him. 4th isn't so bad to fix out biggest problem and hopefuilly have decent season.

Posted by: Hail to 'em | August 23, 2007 12:38 PM

Excellent move. Kendall can play, no question about it, and more importantly, Todd Wade goes from being the worst starting guard in the league to the best reserve tackle. And Heyer and Pucillo head to the bench, where they belong.

Also liked the Marshall-for-Godfrey swap. I liked Lemar, but he regressed last year. No, we didn't get anything for him, but don't forget we didn't give up anything for Godfrey. So the transaction was completely neutral in that regard.

Two good moves. Comparisons to the T.J. Duckett disaster are unmerited.

Great move. We can move Wade back to tackle were he'll be a quality backup. I hope Kendell get to DC by tomorrow and gets to see "some" action in the B'More game. It'll take a few weeks for the Oline to mess... but at least we now have 5 starters on O Line.

People thinking that Cooley and Taylor won't stick are wrong. They'll sign Cooley with no problem to an extension and this is Sean's make or break year..so to speak. If he has another penalty ridden season with more missed tackles than good plays... they let him loose. I hope he straightens up and forms a great 2ndary so we can use a top pick on a CB next year ... Springs is getting up there.

Caps are annoying and rarely do anything other than make you look like an azz.

CL-Most of the time i agree with you, however, just because you live in NY doesn't mean you know what you are talking about.

Wide speculation was that he was going to get traded or cut. They moved him in the freshman dorms at training camp, made him play center (which he said he hates) and even accused him of muffing those two snaps in the scrimmage on purpose.

This was Lavar times 2 obviously no one else was interested in giving anything other than maybe a 7th round or they'd have taken a 6th round next rather than a 5th in two years.

Great move and if you think this is stupid you are an idiot and should just move to philly because you would fit in great up there.

CW, there's no way they let the reaper go. Everyone says he regressed last year but he didn't, he had to play like a linebacker and he led the team in tackles. Your safety shouldn't be leading the team in tackles. Of course he's going to make coverage mistakes if he has to do things besides cover.

Diddy-

Jasno's Tuesday article (paper, not post) discussed the O-line and highlighted a gap between the Skins' seeming happiness with the left side (read: Heyer and Pucillo/Wade) and the observations of several NFL exec/scout-types, the negative views of the latter stated forcefully but from the safety of anonymity.

Gibbs, in what I think was just a normally scheduled press conference the next day (but don't quote me on that), responded equally forcefully saying that the team was generally pleased with those same guys and that what was being said/written (don't know if he mentioned newspaper articles per se, but it was pretty obviously a pointed commentary) was flat out wrong. Then along comes Kendall today, so make of that what you will.

Back to your regularly scheduled sniping.

How does this trade relate to Coach Joe's outburst about JLaC's bashing of Stephon Heyer? The Skins didn't get a left tackle to replace Heyer. They got a guard to play along side him. Joe didn't say they didn't need line help. He said that the shots at Heyer were unfair. And they were.

And you were not a lone voice in the wilderness on the Oline's problems. Stevie Wonder could see there was a problem at guard.

Gibbs & Co have not denied there was a concern at the "left guard" position. So you are wrong once again, Jack.

They stood up for Heyer who is filling in for Samuels - who will be returning.

Posted by: Lisa | August 23, 2007 12:50 PM

Skinz, they've been looking for a replacement for Dockery since April ... around the time of the new CBA when everyone was real uncertain about what the market was going to be like, and then freaked out when they saw how much three GUARDS were getting paid (Dockery, Steinbach, and someone else ... Gandy?). Everything went into clamp down mode. Leonard Davis of all people got a BIG raise from the Cowboys of all teams to move from tackle to guard. Freak out round two. Working free agency for offensive linemen from guard to guard has been TOUGH and unpredictable this offseason. Like it or not (admittedly, most Skins fans do not), the Skins model is built on free agency. Under the circumstances, INCLUDING some offseason austerity early in the offseason, this was a very patient, deliberate, hopefully successful move by the Front Office.

KENDALL SENT TO 'SKINS

A league source tells us that the Jets have sent guard Pete Kendall to the Washington Redskins. It is believed that Washington sent a fourth-round pick to the Jets in exchange.

Rich Cimini of the New York Daily News reported on Thursday that a deal to an unnamed team was close. Our source says that a deal to D.C. is done.

Cimini also reports that Kendall will get, in his new NFL city, the $1 million raise that he craved for the coming year, pushing his salary from $1.7 million to $2.7 million.

It had become increasingly clear that a divorce was needed. Cimini devoted a recent item to Kendall's history of using painkillers to allow himself to play. Though Kendall stopped short of saying that he wouldn't continue to use medications in order to be able to suit up and perform, a source with knowledge of the situation made it clear to us that Kendall would not be using any pain medication if the team didn't adjust his contract.

The root of the problem, as we understand it, is that when Kendall restructured his deal in 2006 at the team's request, the team verbally promised to re-adjust the deal if he performed well. Kendall's perspective was that he fulfilled his end of it, and then the Jets reneged on a commitment that necessarily was unenforceable.

Kendal and the team traded barbs in training camp, with Kendall being relegated to the second team and assigned initially to the rookie dorm. Kendall loudly complained, piping down only when it seemed that the organization was getting ready to suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team.

Last week, the Jets had him play center in a preseason game, a position that he strongly dislikes. There were suspicions that two bad snaps in the game were influenced, consciously or otherwise, by Kendall's unhappiness.

Folks, just like every organization with more than one person has politics, every organization in the NFL has its share of dysfunction and malcontents.

The only way to judge an organization's ability is ultimately to look at its results. During the seven years of the "Mr." Snyder era, the 'Skins have made the playoffs twice, won a playoff game each of those two times, gone through four head coaches (five if you count Robiskie), and had only marginal success in the draft.

In order to determine whether that's good, bad, or mediocre, you'd have to analyze all 31 other teams by the same criteria and see where the 'Skins rank. That's more work than I have time to do, but perhaps some enterprising young lad can surf The Google and put it together for us.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 23, 2007 12:53 PM

LH, Gibbs responded forcefully about the entire article not just the Heyer part. He did get most specific on Heyer, but he did say they were "happy with the job being done by those guys." And I don't remember a lot of voices standing next to me when I said this was a huge problem, I heard a lot of "wait till Samuels gets back he'll help the entire line" and "they haven't gelled yet" and "its just the preseason they'll be fine" and no one seemed to agree with me that we had a huge problem that wouldn't be fixed just by Samuels coming back. In fact everyone piled on me.

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 12:54 PM

The Cimini article makes it sound like Pete Kendall isn't exactly a mature chap. I wonder how he'll fit in with the rest of the "Core Redskins". Maybe Sean Taylor and Fred Smoot can take him under their wing.

Kidding, kidding...

Posted by: P Diddy | August 23, 2007 12:55 PM

Sween-I agree with you. However this whole situation was created by them so I'm not going to thank them for solving it at the cost of a 4th rounder.

If someone kicks me in the balls. I'm not going to thank them for getting me an ice pack.

Posted by: Skinz | August 23, 2007 12:56 PM

Shocking. Pastabelly laying praise on a Skins player:

"Washington had planned to use Todd Wade, an offense tackle for most of his career, at guard, but Kendall is a far better option there.

Kendall, 34, should be an excellent fit with the veteran Washington blocking unit."

To Cpt Obvious,

If I recall, the Skins DID try to resign DD to an extension midseason last year. DD rebuffed them saying he wanted to see what the market would bear. I believe he was smart. I am not sure that DD was worth half the money he was paid by Buffalo.

Believe me, the FO has made TONS of stupid moves that i won't list though definitely have fresh on my mind. To resign someone, you do have to have someone who wants to resign though.

Posted by: CaroCanesFan | August 23, 2007 12:57 PM

With regards to Kendall's age, we should be able to find his replacement in the draft next year with our 2nd or 3rd rounder. Kendall should be able to give us 2 good years to get the rookie up to speed.

Posted by: Rob | August 23, 2007 12:58 PM

An old painkiller junkie who threw his team under the bus, deliberately, on the field. (two intentional bad snaps, even in a preseason game - unforgivable). Looks like you guys got your TO after all!

Posted by: SMACK | August 23, 2007 12:58 PM

You can't count the year Snyder bought the team as a year they went to the playoffs under his ownership. He bought the team midseason and took a 10-6 team and signed Jeff George, Bruce Smith, Deon Sanders, and Mark Carrier and completely destroyed it. He's had 1 playoff season and that was because we rode CP like he was SJK Seabiscuit.

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 12:59 PM

If this move helps the Skins win the division and advance in the playoffs, it will be well worth a fourth rounder. The Skins are a better football team today.

Posted by: Stephon Heyer | August 23, 2007 1:00 PM

I completely agree, this was a fantastic (if not way overdue) move and I am now officially optimistic about this season. That's right, I honestly have nothing I want to complain about anymore and I now feel like 10 - 6 is a realistic possibility. Truly!!!! See, I can be happy.....

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 1:02 PM

Posted by: Todd Wade | August 23, 2007 1:03 PM

What is SJK????

Posted by: Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:04 PM

Skinz --

Would you have preferred the Skins to just sit on their hands and go into the season with Pucillo and Wade at LG? I can't imagine your answer would be "Yes." You don't throw good money behind bad money. They needed to cut their losses now.

Hindsight is 20/20. I'm certain they would have loved to re-sign Dock. But it's not like they didn't try. And nobody foresaw Dock getting the deal he got from Buffalo. It's not like Dock was an all-pro. They tried to move their best back-up lineman to LG (Wade) and it didn't work. So they go out and get a quality starter to fill the hole. Seems like a very reasonable chain of events to me.

Posted by: CMoneys | August 23, 2007 1:05 PM

We now have as much depth as anybody on our Oline with 5 starting quality players, we have a starting caliber backup at T if Samuels is slow to get back or Jansen continues to struggle, our defense looks like a beast and our teams appear solid. Now it just comes down to can JC lead us to the promise land and I think he can.

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 1:05 PM

The DD situation could have been resolved when he wanted to be resigned at the end of 05. Buges was too busy insinuating he was lazy.

Again, it was a lack of foresight by the FO not to wrap himup. Who can blame DD for not signing once he had already assumed the risk of playing with no guarantees of future payment.

I guess they were too fixated on getting such great talents as Brandon Lloyd and Archabingus. Good Move.

Posted by: Skinz | August 23, 2007 1:06 PM

It was not only a fantastic move, it was a necessary move. Regardless of whose fault it was, it was clear that the 'Skins offensive line was making too many mistakes and not executing well enough. Kendall is a great stop-gap replacement for the season.

Posted by: P Diddy | August 23, 2007 1:06 PM

Posted by: Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:06 PM

If CP returns to form and Betts can hold on to the football, we won't have to rely so much on JC.

Posted by: LH | August 23, 2007 1:07 PM

it is tru todd wade is also an 85 but that is at the tackle position...if u move him to guard his rating goes down

Posted by: jason | August 23, 2007 1:09 PM

CM,

My comments were directed at those heaping praise on the FO. Until we know what was given up we can't really know whether or not we "overpayed"

My guess is that another guard who would be just as good as Kendall will show up later on after some cuts. We never show the patience to wait and see like other organizations do. Philly and the Pats come to mind. But what do they know...

Jason that's wrong man, I have the game and I'm looking at it, Todd Wade RG rating 85, they don't even list him at Tackle.

Ok Skinz. We all get that. I am sure if we had Doc Brown's DeLoreon we could go back and fix it. You sound like you would complain if someone gave you a $1 million with the bill out of sequence.

Kendall had two years beyond this season remaining on his Jets' contract, at base salaries of $2 million for 2008 and $2.393 million for 2009. The Redskins agreed to upgrade his contract. --espn

I'm a little nervous about what kind of money the skins are committing to a 34 year old guard with a painkiller history. I know the skins are set at 2.7 million for 2007, which is a good deal guards have been getting huge money on the free agent market this year. I hope the Skins haven't agreed to crazy money in 2008/2009.

Posted by: mugamack | August 23, 2007 1:17 PM

Didnt Randy Thomas play with Kendal on the Jets? And what does SJK stand for?

Posted by: Oc Skins | August 23, 2007 1:17 PM

Wow, I've been like the biggest skeptic on here and take the abuse for it, I said the shoulda signed DD and everybody yelled at me, I said we wouldn't go anywhere without a line and everyone said wait and see, but now we got a starting caliber guard early enough that he can learn the offense before the season starts, they screwed up big time to get to this point and I don't forget that, but come on, they made a move they had to in order to have a shot this season! And we can get two or three years out of him and for a conditional 5th rounder in 2009 that's nothing. We can do tons of things between now and then to get that pick back or find his replacement and there is no guarantee a 5th ever contirbutes and you know that he is a vet who will help you for a couple years. Its there fault they got here, but they have at least fixed it.

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 1:18 PM

The New York Jets have traded disgruntled left guard Pete Kendall to the Washington Redskins for a fourth-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, according to the NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

Kendall has passed a physical, allowing the deal to be completed. Schefter is also reporting that Kendall, 34, has signed a new two-year deal with Washington.

This will be the fourth stop for Kendall, who was drafted by the Seahawks in 1996.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:19 PM

Adam Schefter on NFL.com reports that they traded their 4th rounder in the 2008 draft. Didn't the Skins trade that pick away in the Duckett deal?

Posted by: Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:20 PM

Redcoat,
Since you've been a RI regular and are a Fins fan too, maybe you can give us your thoughts on the season opener.

What should we look for?
What will be the key match ups?

(It might even make a good guest blog, but I honestly would wish that on anyone what with all the cry babies etc)

Posted by: Stumped | August 23, 2007 1:20 PM

its a 2009 conditional 5th round pick that could go to a 4th, which it probably will but its an 09 pick. And its still worth it to have a running game and not get our young QB killed in 2007!

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 1:22 PM

The only concern now is how long will it take for him to digest the playbook and understand the scheme. I don't think the worry will be to get him in game shape, 'cause he's been active in training camp and preseason.

I don't foresee an immediate return on this trade. The chemistry will take some time.

292 lbs is a bit on the light side for an OG. No?

Posted by: Inigo Montoya | August 23, 2007 1:24 PM

Fill the need. Skins had to do this. Good move ... though a bit expensive. After all he is 34 and it is costing yet another pick. Second 34 year old the Skins have brought on board this week.

Posted by: AL | August 23, 2007 1:25 PM

Wow, even I'm not this skeptical, he's been a solid Guard for several years, he's in game shape he's ready to go, do we really think that the skins do anything that drastically different with their oline than everybody else that he can't pick it up in two weeks?

Also, Lemar Marshall just signed a 1 year deal in Cinci. back with old Marvin

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 1:28 PM

"Kendall's addition opposite Randy Thomas gives the 'Skins possibly the best guard tandem in the NFC East."

How nice is it to read things like this today?

Posted by: mugamack | August 23, 2007 1:28 PM

Perhaps with the Saunders and Grilliams systems now more firmly established, Joe G has had time to focus on roster decisions and sort through all the FO intell (and lack thereof).

Maybe...

Posted by: Stumped | August 23, 2007 1:28 PM

I am confused by what the Redskins have traded for Kendall? I really don't care because we needed to do this. But I read it was 4th in 2008 but I thought we traded that for Duckett (one of the stellar moves by FO)? Is it 4th or 5th or both in 2008 or 2009? Is it conditional? If so, on what?

What is SJK stand for?

Posted by: Confused | August 23, 2007 1:28 PM

Outstanding move. Absolutely necessary move, plugging a Texas-sized hole on the line. Is Kendall old? Yeah, he's getting up there, but lots of o-lineman play well into their 30s. The draft pick also doesn't come next year, so we can restock the line(s) with those. Common sense *might* be creeping in to the front office.

Posted by: Keithinator | August 23, 2007 1:30 PM

SJK stands for sorry Jack's Kids, its my kids and its cause I asked a guy to stop cussing on here one day for my kids sake and it is now a substitute for cussing.

And I don't know what the pick is conditional on but it is reported that it is a conditional 5th rounder that can go to a 4th in 2009.

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 1:31 PM

I'm thinking the Jets must have been desperate to add a fifth round draft pick if they'd give this guy away to get one. It's like the tooth fairy left a big, strong LG under Gibbs' pillow.

I've been trying to search the archives because I don't trust my memory. But the memory that I don't trust is that a week or so ago Jasno wrote that the Jets wouldn't trade Kendall to the 'Skins. Does anyone else recall that or am I completely delusional?

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 23, 2007 1:31 PM

Yeah SMACK, but we got Kendall for 2.7 and y'all got Leonard Davis for...how much again?

Posted by: WrongDog | August 23, 2007 1:31 PM

Excellent. We might get 2 years out of him. We need him now, and I'm thinking that offensive line will be the target area next draft.

We can stand to lose late round picks in trades as long as we keep the pics from the first three rounds. We really need those to boost our line, or to trade up to get a top lineman.

Posted by: Dave | August 23, 2007 1:31 PM

I hope this works out for the better...

Posted by: Yesyall.. | August 23, 2007 1:32 PM

to those who think Kendall was going to be cut ... nope. He has value and the Jets were going to get something for him. The Skins were wise to get him now rather than bid later and risk losing him. For the Skins it was too big a hole to ignore. But it does beg the question ... why didn't we get a 2009 5th round pick for Marshall??? That would have been reasonable ...

Posted by: AL | August 23, 2007 1:32 PM

Confused - we all are. Lots of conflicting information out there about exactly what pick the Redskins traded away, but the majority of folks seem to think it's a 2009 pick.

Jack - you seem pretty sure "its a 2009 conditional 5th round pick that could go to a 4th". Where are you getting your info?

Posted by: mugamack | August 23, 2007 1:33 PM

Once upon a time, Kendall did something right suggesting he should be able to pick up the play book. Former first round draft pick. Played on three (four?) different O-lines around the league.

Also, favorite quote from JLaC's LaRon Landry article: "You spend a number six pick, ain't no time to let him [wait]," said cornerback Fred Smoot, who was not surprised by Landry's ascent. "He's not a quarterback. The quarterback's the one you've got to watch him mentally, probably let him sit down a year or two. A defensive player, you've got to throw him in the water and let him learn by himself."

Throw him in the water -- paint ball him in the jewelry -- whatever. I love that Smoot is back too.

Posted by: Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:33 PM

Yeah! I found it, and my memory was right.

Pete Kendall
Got a bunch of emails about him the last few weeks, and talked to some NFL people today (from organizations other than the Skins) who have been in contact witht he Jets. As I have suspected, they are not looking to move the valuable O Lineman now, despite his clashes with the organization.

He continues to practice with the first team and is playing well in camp and looks like a starter for them. It's awful tough to find quality linemen at this time of year. My best guess is maybe they try to find a half-decent guard off the scrap heat in a few weeks after the first round of cuts, but the trade market could be stale.

Cmon guys...the Skins did what they HAD to do to insure this team can make a run....It appears from moves made thios week that is is "The Future is NOW" and I'm all for it.....This guard is good and a great fit with the Skins...I'm so happy and I believe this team is going to do some serious damage this season...

Glad to see they finally recognized the debacle that was their LG guard experience.

Good fix to a serious problem. However, this should have been done last week to give the guys 3 weeks to work with the team before the start of the season.

Posted by: C-A-P-S | August 23, 2007 1:38 PM

So we got Kendell who wants a new contract one year after getting a new 4-year deal, a guy who intentionally snapped two balls over the QB's head last Friday because he was pouting the Jets put him at center, a guy who claims to be one of the smartest players in the league yet negotiates a lousy contract. Last year he wanted his money up front so the Jets took $1 mm from this year and gave it to him as a bonus, so now he's complaining he's underpaid
$1 mm. His attitude got him run out of Arizona, now it got him run out of NY. Soon it will get him run out of here.

Posted by: WrongDog | August 23, 2007 01:31 PM

First of all, Buffet Davis could swallow Pete Kendall like so many 10g oxycodones.

Second, Kendall is PO'd at the Jets, so he is willing to hike the ball over his QB's head and leave him to be killed by four 300 pounders who are trying to earn a roster spot.

What happens when he doesn't like where his locker is, or can't get his usual jersey number? Maybe he'll whiff on a few blocks. What a SJKing SJKhole. He obviously holds the sport and his teammates in very little regard.

Posted by: SMACK | August 23, 2007 1:39 PM

Wise move and he gets at least one preseason game under his belt. Who cares what we gave up as we HAD to have a left offensive guard. Since he can play other positions, he will be invaluable. Hopefully the rest of the line can stay healthy.

A quality acquistion for the next two years. Look for the Skins to draft a guard in the 3rd round next year.Kendall is a great short term solution, which is what the Skins need. I liked Dock but he wasn't that great, he just looked beter with the talent around him. Now you have a smart, quality lineman to go with a talented O-line, the results will be sweet. This was a smart move and it was funny because I mentioned to my buddy the other day that either Faneca or Kendall would be a senseable acquistion.

littery, I'm with ya on the wagon, but I won't relax until the final whistle blows in FedEx against Miami. ONLY then would I be willing to consider winning a "trend". [Philly in the Linc the next week is going to be brutal. Miami is a MUST win.]

Posted by: dcsween | August 23, 2007 1:57 PM

these are exciting times. i haven't felt this good about this team in such a long time. really. when was the last season this team had so much going for them?

even jasno's nfl annonymous execs are saying that the only problem skins have is/was on their o-line. and they took care of that a little and hoping to get samuels back.

let's go people! buy that big skins flag to put on your front yard every sunday, get your lucky jersey ready, clean your lucky seat and move that big screen in the perfect spot. cuz we're goin to the superbowl!

Posted by: Anonymous | August 23, 2007 1:58 PM

WOW. Just read the bio on this guy and you couldn't ask for a better pick up. Can play all spots on Oline including Center! Plenty of time still to develop chemisty with the guys. Guess the only question is will he last all season? Could take a little time but look for the Skins to develop another pounding running attack.

The only remaining ? now is will Brandon pick it up on game days? We hear how good he is in practice. Maybe a sports psychologist can help get his head in the right place for game day.

Posted by: congero | August 23, 2007 1:59 PM

It's a little disconcerting that it took until August for the Skins to recognize that they had a hole on the o-line. It's not like
Wade and Pucillo were unknown quantities to them. Both were on the team last year.
I guess the trade is pretty even value-wise but the Skins do need to start getting younger and trading draft picks isn't the way to do that.
Also, I don't like the perpetuation of the legend of the pot of gold at Redskin Park. I think it was Shawn Springs in the offseason who said that around the league, players just think of D.C. as the place to get paid.

Posted by: jfriday66 | August 23, 2007 2:03 PM

Lloyd, Brandon will come into his own.
Wait and see.

>>>

CUT? He was a starter for the Jets. He was unhappy with his contract.

>>>

STARTER? He is an undersized backup who is past his prime.

Captain Obvious | August 23, 2007 11:59 AM>>>>

Can't have it both ways Cap'm. The skins got younger and faster at LB by cutting an old vet. By ALL accounts they are loaded at LB, and the trim won't be felt.

On the other hand, the skins and their franchise QB were getting KILLED by the offensive line where depth was non-existent, and a guard was DESPERATELY needed.

By the way, the FO does stink. Just not in these two instances. Nor did they stink in their low round and FA LB picks. Ironically, despite themselves, they are building for the future with guys like Heyer and Blades and one or more of the young LBs.

WHat stunk was Bugel and Co. thinking Wade could play OG, and having no backup plan in place. It will still take half a season for the line to get any cohesion.

The pick is for 2009, which means the Skins have 1-2-3 to pick up linemen next year, and another year, perhaps for them to learn under a vet like Kendall.

Posted by: Stumped | August 23, 2007 2:05 PM

I will never totally let the FO off the hook because they shouldn't have waited until halfway through the preseason and after JC get his knee folded until they addressed the Oline issues.

But I will say, this was a great move and he is better than any guy who would have gotten cut and he should have enough time to be ready by week one. I have no more major complaints about this team and now am fully in the Kool-aid line and am excited about the season. 9-7 or 10-6 and the playoffs BABY!

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 2:05 PM

Also, it sounds like the Jets may have reneged on a promise to take care of Kendall after he took a below-market-offer last year. If that's the case, he may not be an attitude problem. In any event, even paying $2.7 million for a quality, starting-caliber guard is a good deal.

Stuck in PGH,

I spent two 'skins deprived season in PGH while in Grad school and there was nowhere to catch a skins game in the city of the terrible towels. I searched High and Low with no luck. Couldn't afford the DirecTV NFL package as a starving grad student. Best bet is to buddy up to someone who has the DirecTV NFL package and beg to visit when the 'skins play.

Thank You Father!!!!!!! after last Saturdays game and thinking there is no way we could go into the regular season with the BIG hole on the o-line and the lack of depth. Big ups to management and the staff for getting this one right.
Now maybe we can start running the ball again.

"Dare I say Joseph Jackson Gibbs owes Jasno an apology?!"

I think Gibbs took exception with Jason over his unassailable expert's critique of prospect Stephon Heyer. It wasn't about the
guard. As I recall they thought Pucillo would do well there. There are many in Redskins park who apparently would like to see Wade start at right tackle and learn the left tackle position to backup Samuels. This is apparently not something that Jansen can do.

The other point made was that people inside Redskins park agreed with his 3 NFL executives. That made Gibbs angry I should think. These experts are happy with the move the Redskins made ... but they still haven't explained how onegoes about training a new NFL left tackle without at least seasoning him in preseason games.

On the guard front, you get 1 or 2 years out of Kendal, and you draft his replacement. Pucillo returns to center/guard. Wade, Heyer, and Armstrong to tackle. After that its a toss up as to who gets to be the other guard. I suspect that Kili Lefotu is out. They had to give up another draft pick to get a decent guard. Killi was supposed to be there by now and he now has caused them to have wasted 2 draft picks. That can't make people happy.

Typically you aren't going to keep more than 3 - 4 backups behind the starters on the OL so ... assuming that Wade is in, Pucillo is in, and Heyer is in ... perhaps they will teach both Heyer and Wade to play guard at a more leisurely pace.

To Captain Obvious:

The Redskins don't have a front office. They have a coach, an overzealous owner, and his yes man. I agree with you on Cooley and Taylor. Those two cats need to be extended IMMEDIATELY, or risk losing both. Especially Taylor; With the contract Landry got, I can see him pulling a Dockery and deciding to hold off on negotiating to test the FA market if they put it off much longer. I think he's got another year maybe two before his contracts up, but NOW is the time to lock him up. Hopefully they'll get it through those dense skulls that they need to take care of their own before going after Free Agents that never pan out. They may as well have taken that money and passed it through a wood chipper for all the return they've seen from last years three...And one's not even on the team anymore!!! Blows my mind every time I think about it

HE DAMNED WELL BETTER! We watched them show the door to a popular player in Lemar Marshall because they want to win this year.

If he starts up with his immature antics again he will be cut so fast he won't know what hit him. And nary an NFL team will touch him for a few games.

Posted by: periculum | August 23, 2007 2:24 PM

Are you kidding me? Proven, reliable starter at guard for a 4th round pick?? What are the odds on getting a starter from 4th round? Or for that matter getting someon who is on the roster the next year? Plus it's cap-friendly. This is a rare great move by the Skins FO. You have to love this move.

Posted by: Avar | August 23, 2007 2:24 PM

To the idiot that said trade for me, I would retire before coming to play for this pathetic joke of a francise.

I have, and will only play for teams that own 5 Super Bowl rings so Pittsburgh is the only other team I would consider(Dallas and San Fran are the only other teams with 5 rings for the many idiots on here that don't understand what I'm saying)

And retire in burgundy and gold? No thanks, I would not wear those disgustingly ugly uniforms for $20 million per season.

Posted by: LARRY ALLEN | August 23, 2007 2:26 PM

You all are funny, the FUTURE is always now in the NFL (Not For Long league). Rarely do teams repeat super bowl wins any more. So with the parity in the league just about every team tries to catch lightning in the bottle for that season.

When other teams do what we do, they are usually praised. We just have a negative rep.

THEY KNOW and apparently AGREE! They have been negotiating with Cooley's agent. They are going to wait out this year with Taylor to see if he makes fewer mistakes compared with last year. AND they will compare him to Landry. But they know they screwed up trying to pair him with Archuleta and paying the guy those big bucks. They corrected that by drafting Landry FIRST and foremost. NOW IT LOOKS LIKE THAT MOVE WILL PAYOFF.

So, its not like they didn't know they had screwed up and did nothing to correct it. They have done a lot.

I thought they'd use Brunell and not a draft pick to get a guard. Its a shame ... they need those picks.

Posted by: periculum | August 23, 2007 2:28 PM

I find it funny how people are immediatly praising this as such a great move by the gibbs/lil danny/bug eyes clown show. These redskins-jets transactions have brought so much success in the past---john hall, jason fabini, chad morton, etc.

And trading away a draft pick for a player that will probably not even be on the team when that draft pick is used is not really the way to build a winner.

But what do I know, I have only won 3 super bowls and have the most talented team in the NFC with 9 pro bowlers and only 4 starters over the age of 30.

Posted by: Jerry Jones | August 23, 2007 2:30 PM

Santana Moss, Randy Thomas and Coles oh wait those didn't appear in your list - wonder why :-)

Posted by: JoeyV | August 23, 2007 2:34 PM

and to the comment that the redskins got pete kendall for $2.7 million this season but Dallas paid $18 million for Leonard Davis, you get what you pay for.

Leonard Davis is 28 and his best years are ahead of him and he is 10 times the player that pete kendall is, ever has been and ever will be.

And you are all so quick to forget that the redskins wanted Leonard Davis but did not have the cap space for him due to all of their stupid mistakes and contracts in the past.

Dallas signed him and we are still $13 million under the cap.

That is how to run a successful franchise.

Posted by: mugamack | August 23, 2007 2:59 PM

its a 2009 conditional 5th round pick that could go to a 4th, which it probably will but its an 09 pick. And its still worth it to have a running game and not get our young QB killed in 2007!

Posted by: Jack | August 23, 2007 01:22 PM

Jack, I completely agree. It's a no brainer to give up a future fourth rounder to protect a starting QB. We got a starter plus this move should also improve our depth at OL. I think the tackle rotation could be Samuels, Jansen, Wade, Heyer. We are still a bit thin at the guard position, but not as thin as we were before the move. As you stated, our running game should improve too.

Posted by: M | August 23, 2007 3:06 PM

Apparently, I made a mistake by posting anything here (dik & mugamack)! Whatever! By the way, signing Pete Kendall is an attempt to fill a glaring need. Makes sense to me, after all, it is the NFL, which I agree w/fellow poster who defined it as "Not For Long"! Sure, I'm no GM so will just roll with the punches. Guess every other NFL franchise does a great job with personnel decisions? Things that make you go hmmm...

Posted by: J-DUB | August 23, 2007 3:57 PM

I'm afraid I'll have to go with Captain Obvious on this one; 'Skins Front Office stinks on ice: Dockery should have been signed very early (e.g. the Ravens don't wait for their players to get into the last year of thier deal; generally, good, young talent is signed to an extension as soon as possible - while they're cheap); also Cooley is G-O-N-E; if not him, then Sean Taylor is definitely gone, (I think Sean hates it hear kinda like Champ Bailey did; Champ did his time quietly, but when his contract was up, there was no way he was staying here. I'd look for Sean Taylor to be gone in 60 seconds); luckily we still have Landry; I think the 'Skins know Taylor wants out that's why they drafted Landry. As for all of that "we want the two safties to work together - build chemistry" crap, that's just more stupid coach-speak horse-crap!

Posted by: guisher | August 23, 2007 3:58 PM

why is it that the skins ALWAYS give players a raise when we acquire them? ...and they wonder why we have cap issues.....

Posted by: vinnymustgo | August 23, 2007 4:10 PM

Great move...FO Let's summarize the off season....

1) Locked Sellars, Thomas and Betts to long term deals
2) Brought in a run stuffer in London Flecther
3) Lost a good Guard to free agency for 18 million and got and equally capable one for 2.7 million
4) Picked up some good young talent at LB and OT (Heyer)
5) We have all but one of our 2008 picks and lost a 4th rounder for 2009.
6) Resigned Omar Stoutmire
7) Resigned Fred Smoot
8) Cut a mediocre LB and replaced him with what could be another mediocre "old" linebacker
9) engaging in talks with Chris Cooley's agent

Not a bad offseason...

MAJOR SCREW-UP...Not cutting Mark Brunell.

Posted by: sicwidit | August 23, 2007 4:12 PM

Everyone saying we'll get Kendell for 2 more years, in the meantime draft his replacement. With what picks do we draft him? And if we knew how to draft we wouldn't need to trade one of our few remaining picks for a 34 year old, undersized (except for his mouth) left guard.

Posted by: Bob H. | August 23, 2007 4:18 PM

Is it just me or does a St. Joe presser sound eerily similar to a George W presser? Lots of generalities and descriptive verbs.

Check out 'Coach Gibbs: 8-23' on Redskins.com TV @ 9:43 mark. Most 'W' like moment "Pittsburgh...pretty studly!" (Also, who the SJK is that howling in the backround during the 1st few seconds?)

Posted by: JonTPK126 | August 23, 2007 5:35 PM

I'm a frequent Skins critic but this is a very smart move - for once.

Posted by: NativeDC | August 23, 2007 6:02 PM

What everyone seems to have forgotten about Dockery is that, prior to last year, he wasn't that good. In fact, even looking at last year, he was probably the weakest link on that offensive line. He led the unit in penalties, and couldn't master certain blocking schemes.

Did it ever occur to the members of Dockery's fan club that Bugel just might have been right about the kid? That maybe he is in fact lazier than he should be? The Redskins haven't done much to inspire confidence in recent years, but Bugel has managed to cobble together decent offensive lines that have been good in pass protection (even last year).

Finally, I've noticed that a lot of people act like a player should automatically re-up with the team that drafted them, and if they don't it's because the team did something wrong. Not necessarily. It takes two parties for a player to re-sign. Sometimes players just don't want to come back -- Champ Bailey being a prime example. Other times, players want to test the market. Dockery being an example.

And occasionally, players like it so much at a place they are willing to sacrifice potential dollars to sign or stick around as a backup. See Betts, Ladell and Macklin, David as examples. Both turned down more money elsewhere (literally or figuratively) to sign with the Redskins.

And to the Cowboys fan that claims Leonard Davis is '10 times the player' that Kendall is, you're either a fool or a troll. Davis is known for one thing: wasted potential and not working very hard. He's never been a consistent quality starter in the NFL, and Dallas is praying that changes.

Nobody has ever accused Kendall of underachieving. So yes, I'd rather have Kendall, even at 34 years of age, than a huge monetary gamble on a career slacker like L. Davis.

I heard all the reporters had to be down wind of Gibbs this afternoon. Seems the old codger let one go in his Depends. Gibbs just gets more and more pathetic trying to field at least a respectable 8-8 team. But even that wont happen. Rumors from Birmingham, AL on Vick's best buddy on the Skins aren't promising. Just got back from there with my girlfriend who was having her shoulder looked at. 4-12 maybe a stretch the Deadskins may have a chance at the no 1 overall pick!

Posted by: sheepherder | August 23, 2007 6:46 PM

Respectfully, I think all the naysayers to this deal are missing the boat. Pete Kendall isn't just a very good offensive lineman, but according to a host of Jets players, he was a fantastic leader in the locker room and one of the team captains. The Jets, in my opinion, got fleeced in this deal. They have no one on their squad with Kendall's skill and chops to replace him with, and all they get is a 4th or 5th round pick.

Redskins fans should be thrilled, because this guy is a steal. The O-Line just got a major boost, and should be considered among the best in the league once Samuels returns. Not only that, the Skins have nice depth at all O-Line positions now. This was an excellent trade for the Skins. Kendall is a better lineman than Derrick Dockery and Leonard Davis combined, and at only a fraction of the cost.

Why the Bills overpaid for Dockery and why the Cowpies overpaid for an underachieving bench player like Davis is beyond me, but that's how they roll I guess. They'll choke again this year I am sure of it. This deal is by far superior in comparison. My only worry is that Kendall needs to pick up the playbook asap. But I think he has enough time.

Begrudgingly I have to tip my hat to the Skins braintrust for making this deal and not stubbornly standing pat as I expected them to. Also congrats to JLC for helping to rock the boat a bit and bring a critical issue to light. Now if we could just unearth a reliable #2 receiver...but I digress.

Skins won out on this deal, plain and simple. We got an established veteran, and a leader, with 156 career starts. Thats 1-5-6 career starts! Anyone who really thinks this is a bad move should reconsider.
