Welcome Home Luncheon

Just got home from the Ritz in Tyson's. Pretty much the same old stuff here as every year..

Former WR Roy Jefferson stole the show with a strong rendition of the anthem, sounding like Harry Belafonte (Gibbs called it "awesome").

Coach Joe did the usual routine, thanking the fans, talking about how hard the team worked in the offseason but offering nothing close to a prediction for 2007. "We don't know what the year has in store for us," he said, essentially the cliff's notes version of the morning.

Chris Samuels was names the Offensive MVP from 2006, and gave the shortest speech in the history of mankind, thanking God, the team and his teammates; I believe that is the proper order but it flew by so quickly that I didn't have time to jot it all down.

Sean Taylor was the D MVP - by default it seems for the 31st ranked unit - and he actually spoke much longer than Samuels, thanking a few more people like his family and chiding Gregg Williams a bit for how hard he rides the safeyt. Sean saved the Big Man Upstairs for last, but certainly not least.

"I want to thank God most of all," Taylor said, "for always keeping me on the right track."

Rock Cartwright got the Special Teams MVP, and expressed similar sentiments, giving a shout out to his deceased mother and offering heartfelt gratitude to special teams coach Danny Smith and running backs coach Earnest Byner.

So that was pretty much it. The food was pretty good for a banquet - hard to beat a free steak when you're a media schlub like me - and I've got some stuff to do before I head over to Comcast for WPL.

Skins have no called about Keydrick Vincent - he's talking to a few teams and should have a deal by the weekend, possibly with the Jets in Pete Kendall's old spot.

Also have a decent story going for tomorrow's paper, and I'll leave you with this statistic as a preview:
Take a wild guess as to what the third-down QB rating was against the Redskins last season? No one I asked around The Park guessed high enough. Think about it for a minute and I'll drop the answer way down below...

109.3, by far worst in the NFL (Detroit second worst at 102.something. NFL average was 78.something
they also had just 4 third-down sacks last season (that one blew my mind) and forced just 4 third-down turnovers (another mind-bender).
they've got to find a way to win third down this season, and I think they're well on the way.

Sure, the steak was good, but all steaks are good. What about the potato, the salad, and the desert?

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 29, 2007 2:53 PM

God then thanked Sean Taylor for letting him stay in charge.

etrod, funny, funny.

Third down was huge last year. Couldn't get off the field on D and couldn't keep drives going on O.

Also Peter King lists his top 500 players, and first Redskin is Chris Samuels at 122. He also says of Champ Bailey, who is number 6, that "Skins rue Bailey-for-Portis deal, big-time." Marcus Washington is next Skin at 149, then Taylor at 159 and Moss at 191. Check it out. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/peter_king/08/28/1to100/

Why, oh why, do they persist in calling this event the 'welcome home luncheon'? They don't freakin' leave home any more!

Sure, they're sleeping in a hotel or whatever, but it's not like they break camp in Carlisle or Frostburg after a month away and caravan home.

Enough already, Dan Snyder and Vinny Cerrato! Stop your lying!

Awesome negative stat! You're like the 'Rain Man' of Doom. You go, negative man, keep it real!

There you go again Jasno...accurately reporting on past failures and backing it up with facts. SKINS HATER!

Posted by: Mike H. | August 29, 2007 2:59 PM

Jason is right. There's a new sheriff in town on this defense. And it ain't just Sean Taylor. Teams will dread 3rd downs against this defense this year. Its going to be big plays for and to all opposing teams a good night.

Stumped sez:
"Peri,
If the Skins drop the season opener to Dolphins, who do they beat this season?"

Hmmm my analytical brain that apparently has claimed that Portis would make a good QB (where does 4-12 get his stuff I can do better than that in my SLEEP dude!!) sez:

Dolphins are NOT, I REPEAT NOT (to all you miss teen South Calinky types out dere) IN our conference. AND especially NOT in our division.

That said I am not unhappy with the idea of an extended "preseason" trying to iron out the OL, the running backs etc.
in that game. In fact Jason mentioned in his article that holding
back Portis was probably a mistake as it will take a few games
to get him rolling. Then he mentions Betts. I like Betts. He works hard. Portis is too busy worrying about dog fights. Then there is the wide receiver snafu. Its going to take time.

But a loss out of conference, out of the division I can live with as long as it prepares them for those all important division matchups.

But on the defensive side of the ball it will be a wake up call. It will wake them up to the fact that they are going to be the driving force behind the team this year. That as THEY GO so go
the Redskins. Then the leaders will rise up, Griffin, Godfrey, Fletcher, and Washington and in the second game there will be hell to pay.

Posted by: periculum | August 29, 2007 2:59 PM

That 3rd down stat is horrible. Just horrible....

Posted by: Skinz | August 29, 2007 3:00 PM

It's the Ritz. How bad can the side dishes be?
FYI, we're at 81,975.

Posted by: Cindy | August 29, 2007 3:00 PM

I think with at least 3 tds per game the defense should be able to lock up the win...agree/disagree?

Posted by: Burg w/ a U | August 29, 2007 3:00 PM

The Skins D is gonna be nasty. Nate long time reader first time blogger, After watching LL, thus far seems like a better choice than D-line, no? With this D we should win a lot more of the 3 point games we been losing the last couple years.

Posted by: Club 320 | August 29, 2007 3:02 PM

"I want to thank God most of all," Taylor said, "for always keeping me on the right track."

Did Sean misspeak? Did he mean to say "mostly" when he said "always"? Jason should ask him about this.

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 29, 2007 3:03 PM

Burg w/ a U,

Agreed. But thats the magic formula for just about every team in the league.

I think the Skins will do it though.

Yeah, Jasno, but we beat Dallas.

There... now I feel better.

Does anyone else feel that way too? That you'd rather beat Dallas twice than win the division?

The trouble is the 3 TDs per game.

I'm betting the we'll average 2 per game and maybe 2-3 FGs.

As goes Suishman, so goes the Skins.

Posted by: Stumped | August 29, 2007 3:11 PM

Beating Dallas is sweet, but it's the ring, man.

It's not winning the division in and of itself, but getting home field in the playoffs.

I would bet we gave up the most third down conversions of 10yards or more. We stunk last year. In years past, when the defense held to a third and long we got our punt return team ready, last year we bit our finger nails. Plus, I bet we led the league in illegal contacts, holds for auto first downs. Probably not pass interference, but we had quite a few of those, too.

I expect our defense to be much improved and have seen this in the preseason games. We must pressure the qb with our front four, which I haven't seen yet. Another weakness, our blitzes are inward routes, players can not improvise. If blocks are made, expect a big offensive gain.

Posted by: JonTPK126 | August 29, 2007 3:15 PM

I had to read the last two paragraphs 5 times before I understood it... kept thinking OUR third down QB rating was 109..

I was like.. um.. hows that bad?!
=D

Posted by: Izzy | August 29, 2007 3:16 PM

To win the division, there is a good chance of at least splitting with 'em. Can we meet halfway?

Posted by: Club 320 | August 29, 2007 3:17 PM

Dik,
Losing to Dallas is unthinkable.

Beating Dallas (twice) is more important that winning the NFC East.

One playoff victory is equivalent to beating Dallas twice.

A Superbowl appearance trumps everything else.

A Superbowl victory...unleashes the burgundy and gold cherubs of heaven.

Posted by: Stumped | August 29, 2007 3:17 PM

There's a reason they call this business "news".

I want the real season to start so bad so that we can stop talking about last year's failures and get to overanalyzing this year's with our pal Jasno.

"So detailed that inevitably, some players will lose interest. Saunders has toyed with the idea of putting $100 bills in the middle of his playbooks. If the money is gone when the books come back, he'll know they've been used."

Of course the money could have just dropped out while the dude was walking with it and he never opens the book on his own time (the name "Portis" springs to mind).

Posted by: Not Anonymous | August 29, 2007 3:19 PM

Fantasy Draft steal of the year. Not picking my defense til the very last round and simply grabbing my beloved Skins! Ahem, well, I mean, Chicago, NE, and SD were already gone.

Posted by: Club 320 | August 29, 2007 3:20 PM

"Yeah, Jasno, but we beat Dallas."

And that's why we no longer see Parcells on the sideline.

That's THE FOCUSED GOAL: WIN 2 against Dallas. 2 against the Giants, at least split with the Eagles. 5W 1L in the Division. All you need to do is win at least 4 other games out of 10 preferably 5. So, a 5 and 5 record against all the others like the fins is not bad as long as you CRUSH your division foes.

"Some players grasp the complexities much faster than others. Redskins backup quarterback Todd Collins, an honors student at Michigan, was called "Rain Man" by his teammates in Kansas City because he almost effortlessly knew Al Saunder's play book forward and backward. "

F-THAT, I really am from the "old school". Beating Dallas TWICE is better than any steenking ring. ONLY WAY ITS BETTER IS when both teams make the PLAYOFFS, and we meet them again and BEAT THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS out of them AGAIN AND AGAIN. Especially since its the CONFERENCE playoff game.

After that its usually a hop skip and a jump to winning the superbowl.

SITTING here dreaming about the surging Nationals beating the tar out of the Yankees and OREEOLE in some future world series.

Posted by: Choo Choo | August 29, 2007 3:44 PM

OKay, here is my guest post. I will be near a computer this evening to see what you all have to say. As said before for all the regs putting in work on the blog, i suspect this is not an issue and you are as I am. But I wanted lurkers to see it at the top and read.

Anyway, have at it.

"Hey Jasno, I have the following as a guest blog. Put it up anytime you are slow on news. The last one was ripped into pretty hard for coming right after some real news... and this guest blog isnt that important.

THE STATE OF FEDEX

I wanted to share with you something that has bothered me for years about Fed Ex Field.

We have the most seats in the NFL, 92,000 plus. I have sat in the nose bleeds (last row has that nice wood and metal fence to bang on as well), down to the lower level and everywhere in between. There is not a bad view in the house (save for the 200 level). The way the stadium was designed was to have the most amount of people as close to the field as possible, hence the ridiculously steep stairs.

In reality we should be the loudest stadium, but we are not. An old place like Arrowhead, which is supposed to be the loudest, does not have the fans as close to the field as at Fed Ex. Capacity of 79000

Seattle claims to be the loudest, and as a newer stadium, it has fans close to the game. But one end zone is almost completely open, and the other has only half of a bowl. Capacity of 68,000

Some will argue that the acoustics play a huge role in those stadiums. But a completely enclosed bowl with the most fans in the NFL and closest to the field of play should be loudest. All those people shouting down at the field, thats acoustics. But we are not the loudest. Why?
THE FANS!!

I go to at least 2 games a year, and I have never heard the stadium as loud as it was opening day against the Bears two years ago. 9 - 7, defensive battle and the stadium was rocking with chants of DEFENSE, DEFENSE. It bolstered our players and we won.

Its nice to think that we can affect a game, even though we were not playing. But we need to bring that kind of energy every game. Last year I sat in dismay as we lost a 14-0 lead to the Falcons. Our team got complacent, as did the fans. Maybe if fans yelled as loud as they did versus the Bears when the game was tight, things might have been different.

I'm not trying to say the team did not lose that game, because they did, and badly, but the fans could have played a role.

So I ask, for everyone reading this blog, if you are going to a game or know someone who is, tell them to yell their head off. I'm tired of people looking at me like I am crazy because I yell. Too many stuffed shirts, too many people remain sitting throughout the entire game.

Keep it clean, keep it fun, but with that ticket comes the responsibility of making soo much noise on D that the visiting offense cant think straight. And since we all have to pay so much for said ticket, might as well get something out of it in return, like that feeling I had that day, knowing we helped our beloved team win.

HAIL!

Some fine US American poetry should send the rats back to their warrens.

Edgar Lee Masters - Alfred Moir

Why was I not devoured by self-contempt,
And rotted down by indifference
And impotent revolt like Indignation Jones?
Why, with all of my errant steps
Did I miss the fate of Willard Fluke?
And why, though I stood at Burchard's bar,
As a sort of decoy for the house to the boys
To buy the drinks, did the curse of drink
Fall on me like rain that runs off,
Leaving the soul of me dry and clean?
And why did I never kill a man
Like Jack McGuire?
But instead I mounted a little in life,
And I owe it all to a book I read.
But why did I go to Mason City,

Nice 'guest blog' zebra. I've noticed the same thing over the past couple years on tv. never been to a game. It seems to me that there is a large component of corporate tickets... i.e. people who wouldn't be caught screaming.
Solution Danny needs to sell cheaper beer... maybe 1/2 the cost. Everyone would then drink more and get louder and more boisterous. Opposing fans would be scared to come to our stadium and opposing teams would fear our crowd noise.

Zebra,

Thanks for the guest blog and for pointing out that you'd posted it. Can't see why Jasno didn't give it prominence -- maybe he's just too busy to focus on it.

My own experiences with Fed Ex have been strongly negative and I'd never go back. The ride there and back are enough to put me off. But, worse, I don't want to be among the people who are there, especially not with my wife and kids. It's not a healthy environment. My last time was to the Jets game when LC made his debut, and when people weren't physically fighting they were throwing epithets and beer at each other. Not a good scene, and not worth the money or the hassle.

Maybe it's like this everywhere the NFL plays now. But it's not that way in my living room, and that's where I'll sing "Hail to the Redskins."

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 29, 2007 4:04 PM

This Lloyd thing smells awfully fishy, just like the SeanTay MRI rumor a few weeks back.

F unsourced rumors up here!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 4:05 PM

Was Lloyd really released?

Posted by: Skinz | August 29, 2007 4:05 PM

yeah - you'd have to trade Lloyd for the cap issues, wouldn't you? regardless of what you got back. (supplemental draft pix?)

Posted by: Dik | August 29, 2007 4:05 PM

Lloyd getting released would really hurt our salary cap next year but Gibbs must have seen nothing out of this guy to make him think he is an asset to this team... good bye Lloyd, we wont miss you!!!

Posted by: bethesdaboy | August 29, 2007 4:06 PM

Understood. As a "sarcasm does not translate to blogging genius" I will be more diplomatic.

Posted by: Club 320 | August 29, 2007 4:07 PM

Clarke Judge:

Rookie to watch: Safety LaRon Landry could be an All-Pro in waiting. An AFC personnel boss I trust last week told me the two best safeties in football are in Washington. Landry is fast, instinctive and has great ball skills. In short, he's everything this club needs to shore up a leaky defense.

Overview: There's a gap, though not much of one, between the upper and lower tiers of this division. The Redskins should battle for third with the Giants and might not have the players to reach higher. I like Joe Gibbs too, not only because he's a class guy, but because he's a winner. But he's 21-27 since returning in 2004.

Posted by: Skinz | August 29, 2007 4:08 PM

At this point, why would you release him? It's not like there is any wr depth at all. We've gotta give him another chance this year. Who could come in and learn the playbook at this point?

Posted by: nah | August 29, 2007 4:09 PM

"This Lloyd thing smells awfully fishy, just like the SeanTay MRI rumor a few weeks back."

Well if you listen to Jack, Sween and Stump they could always use Sean Taylor or even LaRon Landry as receivers and dump the rest. Maybe bring Darell Green back from retirement to catch some balls.

Posted by: periculum | August 29, 2007 4:09 PM

Don't get me wrong, Club 320, sarcasm is the strainer through which the drink is almost always poured.

It's just that these are sensitive times, delicate times, and we gotta stick together up here.

"At this point, why would you release him? It's not like there is any wr depth at all. We've gotta give him another chance this year. Who could come in and learn the playbook at this point?"

Marshall Faulk.

Posted by: periculum | August 29, 2007 4:10 PM

As long as I've been on this blog and as many times as I've seen it, I still don't know from the context what ITA means. I even googled it and learned that it means "I totally agree" which is never correct in any of the contexts I've seen it here. I'm almost embarrased to ask, but...

Now, now, periculum, I'm just saying I'm highly skeptical of this rumor. I didn't meant to set you off, dude. Goodness knows.

I would also say that we're ten days from kickoff in a Real Game, and it's going to take something HUGE for Lloyd not to be starting as the #2 wideout in that game.

would like to see Campbell hand the ball to Portis in a game ... because that has NEVER happened before. Even in preseason. A few carries on Thursday seems like a very good idea ... too bad Clinton doesn see it that way.

Posted by: AL | August 29, 2007 4:14 PM

Speaking of WR didn't sean taylor line up to catch a pass or two on offense last year or the year before that?

Posted by: Dante | August 29, 2007 4:14 PM

ITA = Ignore those @$$holes

Posted by: Dante | August 29, 2007 4:15 PM

That's perdiculous, there is no way we would release Lloyd, Brandon. If he is in a slump at WR, we just convert him to corner, where he won't have to take shots from LL and The Reaper (Oops, I may have stumble across the real problem with Lloyd).

And to set the record straight I though the Briggs acquisition was a bad idea (he's too hard on machinery).

Posted by: Stumped | August 29, 2007 4:15 PM

Marshall has started as many games at wr in the nfl as I have.

Posted by: nah | August 29, 2007 4:16 PM

Really, talent-eval?

Ignore the A$$clown was our mantra for a while when there was a wave of blog skirmishes, when interlopers were perceived as coming in to ruin our good time. It was shortened to ITA.

So it was used to admonish each other (the Good People of the Blog) not to enjoin the intruder in any kind of sparring, which only encourages him.

But then it was correctly pointed out that even the admonishment (saying "ITA" to each other) served as an acknowledgment of the intruder and therefore stoked his trollish flames.

Plus I was abusing the term, myself, and basically making the blog an unfriendly place to newcomers, a not-Mayberry, which was unbecoming.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 4:17 PM

Ignore the @ssclowns...

Btw, the calls to sack Snyder are ridiculous. He owns the team. We can't get rid of him, regardless of how we may or may not feel.

Still think a brand new stadium back in the heart of Old DC would be just the ticket. One designed with RFK's acoustics in mind. And the bench shaking ... what a way to intimidate opponents!!!

LOL people leave the rumors up to the people who follow real news. The Brandon Lloyd rumor was started on here by some idiot who just typed it in all caps and didn't even cite where this was. Then someone else says "rumors at Redskin Park" without citing anything or anyone. Honestly just wait to see if this comes out from the professionals who are covering this team. Not some fools who just care to throw a rumor out there. Don't believe this at all until either the media or the Redskins as an organization report it. Anyone else saying it honestly needs to get a life. Stick to your job and let the professionals deal with these stories. You crack me up. LOL

TWO YEARS ... Hmmm they should be getting to know it at some point this year? Maybe?

Bobby Wade lugs his playbook just about everywhere, in his bag, just like Bennett does in Kansas City. Bennett had a similar problem going from the Vikings' offense to New Orleans to the Chiefs ... in the span of less than a year. He says it takes about two years for him to feel as if he really has a playbook figured out.

Wade's never had the luxury of two years.

"Any break that's not a sleep break, I just try to get into it," Wade said. "That's the biggest thing younger guys don't understand. Everybody's going to be able to compete physically. It's going to come down to what your mental capacity can hold and how long you can hold it for."

Brandon Lloyd cut? Yeah it could happen. Gibbs will have to do it if the guy acts out again. Salary cap hit not withstanding. Maybe not now but during the season? I could see it happening.

Right now Portis is worst. Lloyd just has to make sure he stays beneath the Portis level.

Mike H and Stumped,

Those are good calls. I know 3 is a stretch but not impossible. Suisham looks like he has a consistent leg which will be necessary to win. We always seem to be in close games no matter who the opponents are. I know there are similar formulas but after last year we just look to damn good right now with that youthful line and secondary. I think the Front Office did something quite well there for a change.

It's always embarrassing as a remote fan when the teevee people come back from commercial and the stadium is dead silent, no background noise aside from crickets, and then Brian freakin' Baldinger is staring out at you with those blank pig eyes of his and that weird eyeliner he wears. Ugh.

Oh, the ignominy to which we're subjected as fans of this team.

1. I don't believe for one minute that Lloyd was released.

2. I think Snyder Park does get as loud as anywhere when they have something to cheer for. I was there, in the lower bowl, for Snyder's first game...a Monday nighter versus the Eagles. It was the loudest thing I've ever heard until about 10 minutes after kickoff. By the time we played the Falcons last year all hope was gone for our D.

3. Ignore the morons and they'll go away.

I sure will be glad when the teenagers start school again.

All player transactions have to be approved by the league. The NFL will not allow a team to trade or cut a player if the move results in a cap hit that exceeds the cap. In other words, for the NFL to approve of B Lloyd being cut or traded (they have the same cap hit effect), the Redskins would have to present a package deal of cuts to the league that would result in a net cap hit of near ZERO dollars.

I know this is hard for some of you to wrap your brains around, but it is the way things work in the NFL. No team can exceed the spending cap, whether by signing or cutting players.

Full,

I was there when Portis ran the first play run for a TD in Gibbs' first game back. It was very loud.

It was no where near as loud as RFK i don't think.

Posted by: Skinz | August 29, 2007 4:59 PM

Hershey Skins, I'm afraid we're gonna have to agree to disagree on the uniform our beloved team wears.

At home, whether in DC where we belong or out in Maryland, our uniform is a white jersey and burgundy pants.

The white on whites do not look good, and moreover they do not look like the Redskins! In my opinion, anyway...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 4:59 PM

CW,

Well put. Now you should save it to post, repeatedly, everytime Lloyd's name is mentioned until he actually is cut. I've almost never seen Lloyd's name mentioned in a sentence on RI that didn't also have the word "cut" in it.

It will take as long for peeps around here to accept your explanation as it will take Al Gore to accept the Florida election results, or for George Bush to admit there's global warming -- that is, never.

Posted by: talent evaluator | August 29, 2007 4:59 PM

I was at Lincoln Financial in the 2005 stretch run for the Eagles-Skins season finale when we were in must-win mode (Marshall INT and Portis TD next play was the dagger), and that stadium is insanely loud, even in a losing season for the Iggs.

Posted by: Hershey Skins | August 29, 2007 5:02 PM

Nate

Yeah we shut him down. I am in agreement with you on James Arthur Monk. My point is that ESPN selected those clips out of their huge database for that story. I could give a SJK about Steve Largent.

Farstriker

Open you eyes and pay attention when watching ESPN. You will see what we are talking about.

After eading comments by posters and watching how Jason write for a week....I do not buy this I'm a writing stating facts crap. Jason I'm sorry but you wrote with a sort of tone that makes the Redskins sound like they are completely clueless and same old boring and nothing will ever change attitude...If you are so unhappy being a beat reporter for this team...get another job. Because You are not reporting facts as you see it...You are reporting opinion all in a negative light...I have seen you report things that are somehwat pisitive but it's very short lines here and there....I'm sorry but I'm done with this blog...The news is not really inside news etc...It's nothing I don't read on espn or some captain obvious news.

So I shouldn't automatically dispute you about Sportscenter bias.

Posted by: farstrike | August 29, 2007 5:09 PM

Leevi, this is from Jasno's post:

". . . they've got to find a way to win third down this season, and I think they're well on the way."

Ain't that positive?

Posted by: farstriker | August 29, 2007 5:11 PM

What rumors? That article was Portis saying If I don't get on the ball I might not be back here....He is jsut stating that Betts is good and Is in the wings and common sense tells him if he doesnt show something...He knows they will move on cause thats what teams do.

Posted by: Leevi | August 29, 2007 5:13 PM

Leevi, let it go, dude.

Jasno's tone has cooled off a lot from a couple of days last week, when he was getting attacked on all sides. I still don't see what the big deal was in the first place, but in any event he's been writing pretty doggone "positive" stories for days now.

Just one blog loyalist's opinion. I don't agree with everything he writes, but I do trust Jasno to call it like he sees it, and I appreciate his candor about our beloved team.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 5:14 PM

Yes farstriker and if you read what I wrote

"I have seen you report things that are somewhat positive but it's very short lines here and there"

Posted by: Leevi | August 29, 2007 5:15 PM

Rob, sorry, I do agree with your point about our prominence as whipping boys in other teams' clips on espn. But everybody who roots for a down-on-its-luck team probably feels that way.

Fans of the Texans, Browns, Cards, etc. all probably feel like they show up way too often as "highlight victims."

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 5:17 PM

Honestly, for as much as I crap on BLloyd, it would make absolutely zero sense to release him at this point. We are less than 2 weeks from the start of the regular season, his cap hit would be a nightmare (unless he gave all of his SB back), and we have no other depth at WR.

Cutting him now would also prove just how terrible of a trade/signing it actually was. See what the guy can do this year, then pull a "Lavar" or "Coles" with the guy if he doesn't/can't produce.

Zebra,

Good post. In my personal opinion, FedEx is an embarrassment, but I don't really blame the fans. Yes, there are wine and cheesers who would rather a) not show up or b) sit inside at Hooters instead of in their actual club seats... but I lay most of the blame on Napolean (shocker, right?).

He put 13,000 more seats in the place (1/2 with obstructed views), he controls the ticket prices, he struck the deal with stubhub that allows so many visiting team fans to get tickets in our stadium, and most of all, he controls the product on the field. We are a 5-11 team, with the 2nd highest ticket prices (I think), in a 92k seat stadium. To make matters worse, he doesn't make the game day experience any better for the loyal fans that continue to support his slumping franchise.

Blame Snyder, not us. But still a great post.

Leevi, I also don't dispute that Jasno tends to "get his back up" when he responds to harsh criticism. It's not his most flattering side. That was in play last week, and certainly did nothing to defuse the situation. But again, I like that he is free to be that candid up here on the blog.

Once we started getting real news again, from the Kendall signing forward, I think things got back on track. Or "back untracked," as some idiot color commentators would put it.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 5:20 PM

One factor in why there are so many outside fans that get tix for games at Fed Up Field is that other than Dallas, your other divisional foes are within easy driving distance. There are plenty of Dallas fans in the area anyway--last year Jerry Jones said that 40% of Cowboys merchandise is purchased in this area. So you figure you got mostly down years, frustrated fans and fan experience at one of the WORST game day stadiums, with overpriced product and waalaaaa!!!: "Hey, you in the Eagles shirt, I got two, real cheap."

Posted by: Not Anonymous | August 29, 2007 5:25 PM

talent,

I meant it as a joke that Fox News reported it, since they always seem to be making stuff up.... Fiction News or Fox Noise as Obermann call them... nevermind it was a joke....

Posted by: bethesdaboy | August 29, 2007 5:26 PM

Adding to my previous post, I miss RFK too, but I look at the place with mixed emotions. I can count on one hand the amount of times I was lucky enough to attend a game at RFK, but the place still rocked. It was special.

FedEx is light years away from being that special. You can buy tickets in the parking lot for 5 bucks. Parking is in higher demand than a game seat. I count thousands (sometimes 10's of thousands) of empty seats on game days... BUT the place did finally give me, and many other fans, the chance to attend games on a regular basis.

I wish we could strike a balance somewhere. I want my season ticket to mean something like it did back when RFK was around. At RFK you were looked at as a God if you had season tickets, now people laugh at you... happens to me every day. Simply put, I wish we had a stadium that wasn't quite as big (75k) and wasn't as easy to get into, especially for the opposing team fans. Even in the playoff year of '05, there were countless empty seats, face value tickets, and hoards of opposing team fans. That tells me that the stadium is just too darn big or that tickets/the game day experience just isn't worth the price anymore.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | August 29, 2007 5:28 PM

winning is the only vindication....win consistently will quite the critic's and attract better more rounded coverage....the media loves to pile on and we have been the mostly defenseless weakling getting sand kicked in our faces .....the team has to win on the field to get any respect

Posted by: Old School | August 29, 2007 5:30 PM

I have only been to 1 home regular season game (RFK or Fed Ex)but it is painfully obvious the difference on TV...the "yellow ring" is depressing to see on TV.

I have been to a bunch of away games and that exp from a fan exp aint great either....in philly and meadowlands cheap tix were available...

But cheap tix....hmmm maybe me and some NYC bros should roll down and gobble some up for a HUGE RI tailgate...keep the tix outta the hands of opposing fans anyway....

BRANDON LLOYD WAS RELEASED!!!

Posted by: | August 29, 2007 03:46 PM

There is absolutely nothing on the interwebs to corroborate this anon flamer.

I am looking forward to the receiver having a big year.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | August 29, 2007 5:41 PM

4-12,

I hear ya, bud. You know I struggled with it too.

It's such a double-edged sword. You want the team to do well so it makes it all worth it. But then you also know that if the team does do well, Danny will bump ticket prices by 20%.

Either way, I am OUT if my upper deck tickets go over 100 a pop. It's just so hard to justify a 200 day when you can watch it at home for free, without many (not all, because it's still great being there) of the distractions.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | August 29, 2007 5:43 PM

Ugh, cL, the yellow ring of shame!

Worst... paint color decision... ever.

I always picture the fancy lads with their colleagues, clients and dates sauntering around the lounge level, going from the humidor to the spa to the gourmet restaurant, ignoring the perfect-view seats which any of would give our pinky fingers to sit in, oblivious to the football game going on just outside.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 5:46 PM

Posted by: Anonymous | August 29, 2007 5:47 PM

stumped,

It's sad. On many occasions I've actually been able to count numerous rows of empty seats... FULL rows with 30 seats in them!

It shouldn't be this way in DC. Arizona, maybe. But not here. Something is wrong.

But the bad news is that it doesn't affect Danny one bit. He gets his money regardless, especially with the lucrative deal he was with StubHub.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | August 29, 2007 5:48 PM

Though those should-be seat occupants are more probably sitting in traffic on the Beltway, miles from the stadium, at kickoff...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 5:48 PM

Since I gave up my tickets, they'll probably end up hosting the NFC Championship this year. Oh well...if I've got to be the sacrificial 4-12 to make it happen, I'll gladly take it. But I'm coming to your tailgate, RB!

Posted by: 4-12 | August 29, 2007 5:51 PM

If I understand it correctly, RB, StubHub lets the Skins profit twice: the first time for the original ticket sale (the massive package including parking and so forth), and the second time by netting some kind of fee from StubHub as well as a kickback from each sale.

I'm just guessing at some of this, but it sure does stink.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | August 29, 2007 5:51 PM

Zeeb,

Solid glog. Alas, I have never been to Fed Ex, so I cannot comment either way.

Just speculating, but I tend to think a large contingent of Redskins fans are effete, namby-pamby, metrosexual boys from Dupont Circle who are there to be seen and not heard.

New Power rankings. Skins move up 9 spots to 18. Enjoy

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/powerranking?season=2007&week=1

Posted by: Forrest | August 29, 2007 5:52 PM

No no, Nate. There is at least one new breed in the yellow ring. I moved here recently. Born in Va. life long Skin. Me and my brother will be at the games, at our seats and RAISING HELL. I bought these tix, hence the Club 320, by the way, because we wanted the best VIEW. I know we may be in the minority, but I promise the wine and cheesers wont know what hit em. Guys, the product on the field is the key. Skins win, and things will change. Though I am in support of RFK being demolished and a better than new dallas being built. Thats why I signed a 10 year lease. they can only bump me 2%!

Posted by: Club 320 | August 29, 2007 5:53 PM

I have sat in the club level as my friends father has season tix up there. the section we sit in is pretty loud, but its at least 1/3 empty everytime.

I go inside and people are sitting in lounge chairs, eating hors-de-ourves. And yes, they are in hooters as well.

Posted by: Zebra | August 29, 2007 5:53 PM

What's also disturbing, and shocking, is the walk I take from the Blue Lot every Sunday. By the time I start my LONG walk to the stadium, my lot is full. As I approach the ring of parking near the stadium, the green lot (the outer ring) is also pretty full. But once you clear the green lot, and get closer to the stadium, it's empty. There are hundreds upon hundreds of open parking spots in the orange and purple lots, which ironically are more expensive and reserved for the whine and cheesers.

I've seen 70-year old men and women struggle with the 1/2 mile walk from the blue lot. It's sad.

I know it's a business, but how about forfeiting a few thousand dollars to let some of your older fans park closer to the stadium. The parking spaces aren't being used anyway.

That's what frustrates me sometimes. It's NEVER EVER been about the fans with that man. He cares about one thing and one thing only, money. I know it's like that in some other cities too, but does that make it right, especially for the loyal fans that pad his pockets?

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | August 29, 2007 5:58 PM

Club 320, that is awesome.

I hope you and your bro are tall and fat (Back to School reference, anyone?) so you can fill up some of that empty space which is so hard on the eyes.

Posted by: Club 320 | August 29, 2007 6:03 PM

4-12,

Bring it on. You will love our tailgate... if you remember it.

Nate,

I'm not sure about the arrangement, but I think you're right. What's even more alarming is that the ticket brokers usually have to sell their tickets (the same ones they bought from the Skins at cost plus 20%-I don't know) back to the Skins for a reduced price. The Skins then turn back around and sell them to fans for face value as "visiting team returns". Have you ever seen SO MANY visiting team returns spread throughout the stadium in your life?

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | August 29, 2007 6:03 PM

My God forgive me, Burgundy gear.

Posted by: Club 320 | August 29, 2007 6:04 PM

I sat in the WJFK box on the 50-yard line a few years ago when the 'Skins beat Balmer during their Super Bowl year. Food catered by Ridgewells. Half the people in there were looking at the big screen TV and the other half were talking to each other. A few of their kids were crowding into the few seats that faced the field and climbing over people continuously to get back to the food. Even with the sliding glass window open, you couldn't hear the crowd noise. It was such a sterile experience that it may as well have been a polo match. But the food was great.

I smelled some sarcasm beneath this post from Jasno.

I think I'll counter his jabs at Reaper with the following nugget from Saint Ray-Ray of the dirty bird Ravens.

Ray Lewis: "Pain is only temporary, no matter how long it lasts."

Posted by: DTC | August 29, 2007 6:15 PM

I love all the pessimism, doom and gloom. I would have liked to have seen this blog last year this time. With the Brunello SB or bust etc type stuff. Give me the old clip of Gibbs rippin a reporter for asking him about the SB because Playboy predicted it, and Joe just lost it. Oh, that was before the 91 season, SB win. Man, does anybody know how to get that clip?

Posted by: club 320 | August 29, 2007 6:17 PM

I sort of forgot with the Sean Taylor and Fred Smoot stuff just what happened with Ray Ray...I guess his charges actually stuck..obstruction of justice and lying to police......

"The Super Bowl's Most Valuable Player Ray Lewis isn't going to California's Disneyland or to Florida's Disney World, but his Ravens quarterback, Trent Dilfer, is. Reports say that Dilfer got the nod from the Walt Disney Company to star in its well-known "I'm going to Disney World" (or, for those west of the Rocky Mountains, "I'm going to Disneyland") TV ads. Usually the honor goes to the game's MVP, but Lewis's brush with the law last year is being viewed by some as making him not terribly appealing to the family-oriented Disney people. The Baltimore star linebacker was charged with murder in the stabbing deaths of two men outside an Atlanta nightclub after last year's Super Bowl game. The murder charges were later dropped, but Lewis, as a witness to the killings, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice and admitted that he lied to police. "

Posted by: DTC | August 29, 2007 6:19 PM

We've seen the D play in pre-season, when it doesn't count, up here. I want to see them bring it on game day, take the game in their own hands. I think we'll see some turnovers too.

The offense probably won't be explosive out of the box, but against all but the best defensive units they'll do well. Maybe, just maybe, they'll get a multi-dimensional O going.
