Daniels Not Looking Good/Who's Really To Blame?

Phillip wasn't even taking part in the stretching. Looks like he still can't put any weight on the sprained foot. Very rarely will any player on this team play in a game after missing practice all week. I'd have to imagine Demetric Evans starts at this point but we'll see what Coach Joe has to say about the situation after practice.

Anywho, was thinking about the beat the other day and, being a stat nerd, came up with this:

Which Postie beat writer schlub has the worst record of the game he's covered during JJG 2.0? (Regular season only):

La Cantreporta: 22-27 (the only one here for the whole enchilada) - .448 win %

Howard Bryant: 10-13 - .435

Len Shapiro: 3-4 - .429

Nunyo Demasio: 8-10 - .444

So there you have it folks, blame Lenny. The only guy of this bunch of to have covered JJG 1.0 is the fall guy. Direct all of your hate mail his way. No seriously, Len is the man, dean of NFL writers and one of the beat, most helpful people I ever met in this business. It's amazing cold calling personnel guys around the NFL, if you drop Lenny's name and say you used to work with him and he gave you the phone number, 9 times out of 10 they say how much they love Len, and proceded to help you out any way they can.

Actually, though, we're splitting hairs here. We all have essentially the same win %, which means if they go on a roll this year the new guy, Jason Reid, is going to get all the glory. Figures. Story of my life.

Randoms: In the last two weeks I have procured tickets to see The Wiggles, Milkshake and The Doodlebops (this will be a second venture into Doodle-dom for me and Chloe). That pretty much sums up where my life is at this point. I can't even remember the last "big-people music" show I went to. I am starting to get Chloe hooked on "Pet Sounds" at least, so we're making progress ... Best two-person karaoke tune of all-time: Iggy Pop - Some Weird Sin. Do a couple of car bombs, arm wrestle your buddy for who takes Iggy's part and who does the Bowie backing vocals, be sure to rip off your t-shirt at some point between verses (and no, I'm not being gender-specific here) and become a rock god. It's really that simple ... If you are in one of those survivor pools, I suggest taking whomever plays KC for the next 4-5 weeks at least. Loved Houston last week and, though Chicago is a decent enough team to maybe not waste using them now, I don't think you can go wrong with them, either ... Terry Francona is killing me softly with his moves, killing me softly with his moves, killing me softly. Strumming my pain with Okajima, leaving him in far too long/ Go get him after the walk, Tito, don't let him face that punk Damon/ Oh no, not Paps in the 8th now/At least you spared us Gagne/Killing me softly with his moves/ I hope it's not slipping away.

Big people music is over-rated anyway. Last night I had a dream about Beyonce and all I could think of was, "she'd be a great babysitter..."

Daniels is a 10+ year vet. He can get away with playing without practicing if the coaches believe in him. This is a key divisional game and we have and early bye. I just care if he plays......

One of the great JLC posts of all time.

I feel like I'm listening to a beat cat hit time and weave the words out of thin air.

That's me on the bongos, man, keeping it alive! Oh yeah, play on, playah!!

For kids music that doesn't split adult ears, you should listen to the local band Rocknoceros.

Jason,

You sound like me. I have taken my kids to see the Wiggles, Milkshake, and the Doodlebops (met you at the Doodlebops show). Its all fun with the kids though.

Lets hope Jason R. brings a good record to the 'Skins.

farstriker gets 5 TCCLs for using "desuetude" to end the last post. First time the word has ever appeared on RI. (Please verify, MV Dame, I'd hate to be wrong about this.)

Now, Jason has to work it into one of his print columns and Cindy has to urge us to use it 4,000 times before the bye week. The Boren Multimatum. Of course, the "Sign Chris Cooley" dude could accomplish that with one post.

Greatest rendition of the greatestkid's song ever?

RUNNERUP: Old MacDonald Had a Farm--Frank Sinatra. He recorded it when he claimed he could record any song written and make it a hit, and some fooled dared him. It was a hit.

WINNER: I'ts not Easy Being Green--Ray Charles. Oh yeah, sure the frog nailed it too, but Ray takes it to a new universe. Without changing a word of the lyrics, he makes it his song, now the story of a black blind kid trying to survive in the segregated south. Made me weep like a little girlk who's lost her pony.

Okay, sorry I got all sentimental mushy there, so let me make amends:

JJG II is a reflection of the ownership situation more than anything else. And the salary cap's affect on mistakes made.

I was thinking if Goodell REALLY wanted to punish the Patriots as he has so many players HE would not only take away draft picks but cut the Patriots salary cap down to between 75% to 50% of the rest of the league for 2 years.

Pet Sounds or no Pet Sounds, whatever you do DON'T take Chloe to see Brian Wilson. I wish him all the best, but seeing him perform live now is disturbing.

"Brian Wilson. I wish him all the best, but seeing him perform live now is disturbing."

Rampant drugs seems to lead to a short life and bad death ...
whether legal or illegal.

Looks like I was right about the 'Skins playing Springs less, more as a nickel back ... if I am right he will play a lot Monday night. And against every single divisional opponent. He will be held back depending on the importance of the other games.

Hey, it's our first Jason Reid sighting!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/14/AR2007091402142.html

"The 12-year veteran acknowledged time was running out for him to play in the first game of the season against an NFC East opponent that has defeated the Redskins 10 times in their previous 14 games."

For all of you grammar experts, here is a sample JReid sentence for you to diagram. Good luck!

Here's more from JReid's debut. See if you can find the misspelled word.

"One bad experience in Philadelphia apparently hasn't prompted Clinton Portis's mother, Rhonnel Hearn, to change her travel plans for Monday. Hearn intends to attend the game at Lincoln Financial Field, the site of her altercation with an Eagles fan in the final game of the 2005 regular season."

Back to the SJK "Jack" and DE draft

Dear Jack,

Here is a great young cornerback who is expected to be an unrestricted free agent next year.

Nnamdi Asomugha | #21 | CB

He is expected to get more money than JaMarcus Russel just got from the Raiders. He would be perfect for the Redskins. He is a cornerback and he and any good cornerback (including long-in-the-tooth Shawn Springs) are expected to make more money than most QBs.

Now what do you think would fit the Skins salary cap situation? Signing a very expensive free agent cornerback or drafting 2 next year or beyond? Or signing a much less expensive DE if such is needed?

If you use your head for something other than a hat rack you will see that cornerback is best obtained through the draft.

Posted by: periculum | September 15, 2007 5:21 PM

Here are the most lucrative free agent deals signed by position:

Cornerback:
Nate Clements - 8 yrs, $80.0 million, $22.0 million guaranteed

Defensive End:
Dwight Freeney - 6 yrs, $72.0 million, $30.0 million guaranteed

Posted by: Just for the Record (Not Jack) | September 15, 2007 5:34 PM

Who do the Redskins play this weekend?

Posted by: JJ | September 15, 2007 5:42 PM

Defensive End:

BNnamdi Asomugha #21 CB 6 year veteran:
Predicted to be in the $100 million neighborhood.

Imagine Champ Bailey on the open market today?

Know any defensive ends that will be able to ask for that?
You get more for the buck drafting corners from the draft
period.

Posted by: periculum | September 15, 2007 5:58 PM

"What does philip daniels do to warrant still being on this team? He should retire, today."

He is actually effective in passing situations from the tackle position because of his strength. His speed is down but the strength and leverage is still there. Evans might be more effective at end at this point but he will have to prove it in game situations. Wilson is raw, needs to bulk up, but he could push him and Carter.

IMHO if the Skins still had Champ Bailey and Shawn Springs, plus Rogers and Smoot they would unequivocally be the very
best defense in the NFL. DL schmeeee"L". They are one player away and that player is a cornerback.

Posted by: periculum | September 15, 2007 6:03 PM

"The 49ers agreed to terms with cornerback Nate Clements on a eight-year, $80 million contract. $22.6 million was guaranteed. Clements can say he's the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, but he didn't get the most guaranteed money and the deal is essentially six years and $44.5 million."

rotoworld.com

"Colts signed DE Dwight Freeney to a six-year, $72 million contract with a $30 million signing bonus. That makes him the highest paid defender in NFL history. Freeney may be too one-dimensional to be worth it, but he'd still get more on the open market. He gets $37.72 in the first three years, although the Colts actually save over $3 million in cap room in 2007."

rotoworld.com

Key issue: Clements hit the open market, while Freeney gave Indy the hometown discount.

Try as one may, there is no way to determine the real difference in value between a premier CB versus a premier DE. (Both positions are very valuable.) Most of the premier DEs in the past two years have re-signed with their own teams. Clements was not a premier CB and still landed the "biggest" contract to date on the open market.

Based on the availability of premier position players coming out of college, the most sensible approach is to target both a DE and a CB in the first two rounds of the draft. The final determination of "which comes first" should be based on "best available target position player" and "best position depth" at the time that the first round pick is made. This approach would usually dictate a CB picked in the 1st round and a DE picked in the 2nd round.

We should be so lucky if the Redskins keep their draft choices in 2008 and draft a topnotch CB prospect in the 1st round and a solid DE prospect in the 2nd round.

A little dap for my Virginia Cavaliers on the occasion of their 22-20 win at UNC. In football. No passing game to speak of, but you can't argue with 220+ rushing yards from Peerman and Pearman.

The Wahoos are 2-0 in conference play and alone atop the ACC Coastal division, which really means a heck of a lot three weeks into the season.

Wahoowa!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 15, 2007 7:54 PM

"We should be so lucky if the Redskins keep their draft choices in 2008 and draft a topnotch CB prospect in the 1st round and a solid DE prospect in the 2nd round."

That makes much more sense to me. I would draft another corner in the 3rd round if a sleeper is available or wait until the following year to draft high. They also need a wide receivers or two. By then Brandon Lloyd will be out of the picture.

Posted by: periculum | September 15, 2007 7:56 PM

They definitely need many more draft picks not less. And that's the truth. The mistakes in free agency and the dearth of picks has left them in an unenviable position. Even with a good year.

Its interesting how huge an effect losing a premier starting cornerback can have. Versus losing a starting DE or even a starting receiver! The only two positions that have a similar effect would be feature back and quarterback.

We haven't even played the second of sixteen games yet. We don't know who will play well, who will play badly, who will end his career. Tonight, the general consensus is: let's go to the casino and then the "gentleman's club".

Now, I love craps, and I love, well, the other stuff. But it's Saturday night. Can't these people do something civilized? Like go to a dive bar, shotgun PBR, do shots of Hornitos, and lick the floor?

Others: "Bionic Woman" is ridiculous. Incredibly, incredibly, incredibly stupid. And the chick isn't even that hot. Flavor of the week hot, but not exotic, cool hot. And she has no talent, either. Blech.

"Chuck" is awesome.

Nate,

I just put the brat to bed after all 4 feet of him sat on my lap while we watched "Arthur and the Invisibles."

I most certainly do consider my little person to be a brat. He's demanding, stubborn, rude, defiant, mouthy, spoiled, and prone to temper tantrums. But, he's also intelligent, affectionate, generous, kind, witty, and expressive. I love that kid more than anything or anyone I've ever set eyes on. But, I'm not blinded enough by that not to recognize that he can really be a little pisser. So, I say it half in jest, half not, and never to him either way.

Posted by: JustMe | September 15, 2007 10:50 PM

Perfect time for my flingin' flangin' iTunes to stop functioning (app will not open no matter how sweetly I cajole it), as I'm trying to put the new Black Francis album on my iPod for my trip to NYC.

Oh itunes, why hast thou forsaken me, now when I need you the mostest??

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 15, 2007 10:51 PM

Drinking a Whiskey Sour here while I watch Redskins Report and then the Joe Gibbs show once that is done.

Posted by: JustMe | September 15, 2007 10:52 PM

I hear ya, JustMe. Just like chris Larry's description of the in-laws visit, I think you adequately described a lot of peoples' experience with the wee vexatious ones. And I didn't *think* you would address him as a brat. Again, just making conversations...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 15, 2007 10:54 PM

iTunes always has problems for me with my iPod nano. No problems with my iPhone or 80G iPod. Just shut down iTunes, reset the iPod (hold down Menu and Play at the same time until the Apple shows up on the screen, I think), and retry syncing.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 15, 2007 10:55 PM

Posted by: cload and daggar | September 15, 2007 11:01 PM

Hmm... a whiskey sour does sound good. So does shotgunning a PBR. I am easy. Another Haymaker for me, then.

Aha! There was a software update I had missed. Installed, all's well now, Black Francis is coming with me to NYC on my Nano... thank goodness.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 15, 2007 11:01 PM

I understood, Nate. :)

Posted by: JustMe | September 15, 2007 11:01 PM

Wow!

Posted by: cload and daggar | September 15, 2007 11:02 PM

CL,

I can't make up my mind which would have been more painful -- having to sit through Unaccompanied Minors or holding in a fart for the duration of it. LMGO

The brat normally harasses me to take him to the movies to see anything with kids in it. Fortunately, I dodged that one.

Posted by: JustMe | September 15, 2007 11:03 PM

ahh, was that iTunes 7.4.3.1 (afternoon) or itunes 7.4.3.1 (early evening)?

"You're watching this game on ESPN Classic for a reason"....

Posted by: cload and daggar | September 15, 2007 11:08 PM

"And now, the 2005 World Series of Poker".
Ummm, no.

Posted by: cload and daggar | September 15, 2007 11:09 PM

SC, so with Daniels and Smoot downgraded, would you say our chances on the whole (to have as stout a D as we saw last week against a much better O; to win) are accordingly downgraded?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 15, 2007 10:22 PM

**************************************

I don't like our chances any less. I feel better with the idea of less Smoot or Rogers, and more Springs. I'm also not uncomfortable with Macklin, so I'm not worried about the corners at all.

With Evans, you get someone younger, faster, and determined to be noticed more this season (wasn't he the one yapping off at the beginning of training camp about all of the stuff he was going to do this season???). Let's see what he can do for a full game, with maybe Chris Wilson getting some spot pass rush duty. It'll be a good opportunity to see what the young dudes can do.

Awesome article about Stephon Heyer in tomorrow's WashPo:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/15/AR2007091501362.html

Posted by: P Diddy | September 15, 2007 11:19 PM

Really good article on Heyer: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/15/AR2007091501362.html

I don't mean any harm, but thank goodness it wasn't up to our favorite plaid shorts wearing beat reporter to write it.

Posted by: JustMe | September 15, 2007 11:24 PM

SC, JustMe, I remain cautiously optimistic about our D. This is their first of several good offenses on a row -- really good, if McNabb looks better -- and I think they're playing with a purpose, an attitude, and the proverbial chip on the shoulder pad, that were lacking last season. Hoping that all stays true even if we have a few key dudes dinged up...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 15, 2007 11:25 PM

I was so engrossed in that article, I didn't refresh before posting the link too. LOL It's a really good read.

Posted by: JustMe | September 15, 2007 11:25 PM

And, you're right, JustMe. Good thing JLaC didn't have to write it.

The article should have said "everybody likes Heyer...except JLaC".

Posted by: P Diddy | September 15, 2007 11:27 PM

Posted by: Dante | September 15, 2007 11:28 PM

Nate,

I think the D will be fine. I'm looking for them to have a few more games where they look really good at times, and not so much at others. Kinda like the 2005 D. To me, they started much slower than they finished. They're adjusting to tweaks in the scheme and to new personnel. I think by midseason, they'll be great, barring major injuries.

Posted by: JustMe | September 15, 2007 11:29 PM

Anyone else want to post the link to the Heyer article? :-)

Alrighty hamsters, time to head out.

Enjoy your Saturday night.

Reppin TX, I would love to see a barn-burner that's close all the way, something like 23-21. Like you, I have visions of Swish booting another game winner late.

Just want to see us play for sixty minutes like we want it more than they do.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 15, 2007 11:51 PM

I would LOVE LOVE LOVE for us to go into Philthy and win. I know it is WAY too early to say.."Big Game" , however, it would be nice to put the B"eagles" into a 0-2 hole. By the way...the answer is Beyonce

My idea of a perfect Monday Night....

Home from work, a light bacardi and Coke to get the mood right... a quick "who's your daddy" from the wife... a pre-game intro from Mr. Tony... 4th play of the game, CP takes it 62 yds for a TD.... 2nd qtr Fletcher tips a pass into the hands of LL for a nice 14-0 lead...from there Beyonce decides to leave Jay-Z and find her way into my heart. The rest of the story falls into place...if ya know what I mean. !!!

Living in Texas as a Skins fan has to be as bad as living in Philly as one. They better play tough on Monday night so the Linc clears out and I can party with any remaining Skins fans.

Hail.

Posted by: cdubb | September 16, 2007 12:17 AM

Brian Baldinger is a huge, dry, salty, sour, dildo. lisa, don't listen to a thing he says!

Posted by: JG | September 16, 2007 12:19 AM

Actually, for the past 15 years, living just about anywhere as a Skins fan has sucked.

Posted by: farstriker | September 16, 2007 12:19 AM

I've lived outside of Philly (Coatesville) and I'm living in TX (DFdub) now. TX is nowhere near as bad as Philly. People down here are generally pretty easy going.

Posted by: bigfish | September 16, 2007 12:19 AM

Very true farstriker. Sad.

Posted by: Reppin TX | September 16, 2007 12:21 AM

Come on, JG. You know that's not a proper thing to say.

. . .

You don't need the comma before "dildo," dahling. It's the noun.

Posted by: farstriker | September 16, 2007 12:21 AM

Rip Hamilton - pride of Coatesville. There are some cool people in Philly bigfish but a lot of SJKholes as well.

Posted by: cdubb | September 16, 2007 12:22 AM

Beyonce is cool but I could think of others that I would prefer above her. CP is great and Bicardi is alright too but I prefer my Brandy. Hail to drunk blogging while the wives are asleep!!!

Posted by: bigfish | September 16, 2007 12:24 AM

Baldinger was not making that statement about the Eagles D line in an ugly manner...they were talking about all the teams. He was just stating what he saw. That's why I'm worried.

Posted by: Lisa | September 16, 2007 12:25 AM

I would be soooooooooooo excited if Jason Campbell had a good game. It would be great for him to go into Philly on Monday Noght Football, on the road, against his idol, and go toe-to-toe with D.Mac

Posted by: Reppin TX. | September 16, 2007 12:25 AM

cdubb - you up in that area?

Only reason I lived in Coatesville was because I had along time girlfriend up there while in the Navy. We both got out around the same time and lived together for a bit. Had to get back to DC because the jobs were better.

also, I finally gave in and got a white Cooley jersey... the contract signing helped me in the decision. I'll still wear my Champ Bailey jersey though. Here's to at least 6 more years of the Coooooooool man.

watching the banter between Baldfinger and Sterling not-so-Sharpe on a bellyful of Chinese rotgut is possibly the most disgutsing thing in life. seriously, has anyone seen this show?

later, gotta get home
nate once again, hopefully see you monday

Posted by: connskins | September 16, 2007 2:38 AM

Be well and drive safely, connskins. Hope to see you Monday in NYC. See you back up here soon, for shore.

Aye, 2:41, aye.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 16, 2007 2:42 AM

whoa, is my computer playing tricks--a gap from Nate at 2:42 AM to now, 9:09?

In season?

Wow.

Posted by: farstriker | September 16, 2007 9:10 AM

Mebbe it's because of the Monday nighter/A$$CLOWNZ/beautiful Fall weather here on the East Coast. Either way, it will heat up the closer we get to game time.

Good game on tonight, will Bill "Director of Photography" Belichik and his troubles be a distraction for his team?

Posted by: Pulldownclaw | September 16, 2007 9:27 AM

Just posting so we don't have another 6 1/2 gap.

Yowzers!

Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 16, 2007 9:38 AM

Off to son's hockey game. I hope there is blog activity this morning.

I wouldn't want someone posting a bunch of Office quotes just to keep us on life support :)

Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 16, 2007 9:41 AM

That Les Carpenter article on Heyer was one of the better stories I have read in sports section in a long time.

Posted by: LH | September 16, 2007 9:44 AM

Wasn't it was Philip Daniels who asked Gibbs to let them have it their way with regard to offseason conditioning? Didn't he say that Gibbs'program was too hard, and caused them to get injured. I seem to recall Daniels saying something to the effect of "Before I came here I could run through a brick wall". Well he got his wish, and after one game he's got another injury and will be out next week.

Daniels is a BUM. He's always hurt, and he can't put pressure on the QB. He now lives by the old 5 mississippi rush backyard football rule.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 16, 2007 10:23 AM

Next offseason is going to be very interesting with guys like Daniels, Springs, Griffin (class of '04) getting older and their cap hits getting larger...

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | September 16, 2007 10:30 AM

I may end up with tix to the giants game. Has anyone taken the shuttle bus to the stadium from the Landover station on the Orange Metro line?

Posted by: Hopeful | September 16, 2007 10:32 AM

Hopeful,

Maybe I've talked to the wrong people, but I've heard horror stories about those shuttles, especially trying to get one after the game.

I would change over to the blue line and take that in... it's like a 3/4 mile walk to the stadium and you don't have to be dependent on shuttles.

Posted by: Ricky Bobby | September 16, 2007 11:02 AM

Hopeful, whenever I have gone to the game without a parking pass, I have used the shuttles and it has never been problem either going to returning. If you don't mind about a mile walk to the stadium, you can take the subway (blue line) to either the Garret Morgan or Largo Town Center stop and walk to the stadium. Many fans make that trek from the pay lots near the Largo Town Center stop.

Posted by: LH | September 16, 2007 11:38 AM

Awesome article on Stephon Heyer by Les Carpenter. Hard not to root for that kid.

Posted by: skinswest | September 16, 2007 11:51 AM

Ricky and LH, thanks. I think I would prefer to rely on my feet and walk the 3/4 mile. I'm coming south on Amtrak. I can go into New Carrolton or Union Station. If I go into Union Station I can take an Acela otherwise the Amtrak regional train. I would prefer the Acela but how much time am I wasting by going into Union Station then getting out to the blue line stations you mentioned? You mentioned Morgan or Landover. Is one better than the other? Are there signs pointing to the field or can you just see it and follow the sound of money being loaded into Brinks trucks?

Posted by: Hopeful | September 16, 2007 12:02 PM

Looks like if I get out at Morgan I can just walk up Summerfield to the stadium. Do yuo know what time they open the stadium?

Posted by: Hopeful | September 16, 2007 12:27 PM

I'm taking the day off... if you were wondering about how I was abiding.

Go Dolphins! Go Packers!

Posted by: Dorf | September 16, 2007 1:15 PM

I'm watching the Red Zone Channel on DirecTV. It's like having a personal assistant channel surf for you while you sit on the couch eating buffalo wings.

DirecTV Supercast requires a Windows PC. Damnit!

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:38 PM

Steelers throwback unis are hideous. They look like someone squirted mustard all over poop.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:40 PM

I was talking with my friend, a Steelers fan we'll call Steely McBeam, and I told him the Stillers looked hideous. Very few of the thrownback unis work for me.
Titans giving the Colts a bit of a game here....

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 1:43 PM

I liked the 'Skins throwbacks from a few years ago. They were pretty cool...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:47 PM

Dan Dierdorf on Colts/Titans. I have to figure out which of my three remotes has the mute button...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:48 PM

And...this is the part of the game where the Colts run away with it...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:50 PM

News flash from the Steelers game...

Solomon Wilcox thinks that Troy Polamulu has good instincts and is going to be a good safety.

I'm speeching by this blinding flash of insight.

Adam

Posted by: EaglesFan | September 16, 2007 1:55 PM

Yeah, you're probably right. Maybe I'll toggle 'tween Niners and Gints for a while.

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 1:55 PM

Hey Adam, are you nervous about tomorrow? :-)

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:56 PM

or maybe that was speechless? who knows

Adam

Posted by: EaglesFan | September 16, 2007 1:56 PM

Cindy, surely you have Sunday Ticket...Red Zone Channel rocks.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:56 PM

Gotta admit, though, that this 3rd-string crew doing Steelers/Bills actually does take the time to point out who blocked who and why things are happening...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:58 PM

Vince Young doing his best to make the Colts/Titans a good game...he's simply amazing.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:59 PM

It's too bad Vince Young failed the Wonderlic.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 1:59 PM

Yes.

Even though Brian Baldinger is an idiot, he's right that the Iggles D Line is a lot better this year than it was last year. I just think the offense is (currently) a mess and won't do much against the Skins improved D.

If the game's low scoring, the Iggles will be alright. If it get into the 20s, I think we're cooked.

Adam

Posted by: EaglesFan | September 16, 2007 2:00 PM

Steelers/Bills game just had one of the most impressive 1 yard lesses I ve seen in quite a while

Adam

Posted by: EaglesFan | September 16, 2007 2:01 PM

We should do, like, a story on this Polamalu guy.

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 2:02 PM

I think it's another nailbiter, pace around the room, rub the lucky dog kinda game.

I also think it's another one of those occasions that is appropriately celebrated with Oreo Pizza.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 2:02 PM

Diddy, you're right that SW's in game color commentary is very good. He just needs to be banned from doing those canned shorts for the forseeable future.

Adam

Posted by: EaglesFan | September 16, 2007 2:03 PM

I agree, Cindy. This Les Carpenter guy has skills with the puff pieces. You should send him to Pittsburgh to profile Polamalu. He's an under-reported story if there ever was one...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 2:04 PM

Think the Bills found a keeper in Marshand Lynch. Steelers are a pretty good tackling team and he's making a lot of people miss.

Adam

Posted by: EaglesFan | September 16, 2007 2:06 PM

This dude doing commentary on Red Zone Channel is awesome.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 2:06 PM

though he's being very effectively negated by JP Lossman

Adam

Posted by: EaglesFan | September 16, 2007 2:07 PM

While we have the Directv package, we don't have the superfan pkg, so no redzone for us. And don't call me Shirley.

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 2:08 PM

Cindy, you should do a "Where are they now?" piece on Michael Vick. Maybe time it with the WashPo's annual Watergate Anniversary celebration.

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 2:13 PM

Whatever happened to Michael Vick? And his brother, Marcus? You don't hear much about them anymore.....

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 2:14 PM

So, with 2 minutes left in the first half, Buffalo has 57 yards of offense and 1 first down.

9-0 never looked so bleak

The Browns are starting a QB named Derek Anderson. Who on Earth is Derek Anderson??? He just threw a TD.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 2:14 PM

The Skins will be wearing their throwback unis next week against the Giants. Bright yellow helmet and I believe the uni pants are bright yellow as well.

Posted by: Lisa | September 16, 2007 2:16 PM

Come on P, Derek Anderson is a solid wing player; I remember him when he played at Kentucky

Oh, you meant Derek Anderson the QB?

Oops

One thing in JC's favor: he doesn't have that Madden '08 curse hanging over him.

Watching Peyton Manning right now reminds me of what it was like watching Joe Montana win those 4 Super Bowls. He is in a zone that is completely, totally unreal. No matter what you think about BBM, he is playing on another planet right now...

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 2:36 PM

I've got the Carolina-Texans game.

Kubiak has brought the Denver O with him to Houston, and they are looking sharp after falling down 14-0 early. Matt Shaub is the real deal.

Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 16, 2007 2:36 PM

Mario Williams finally emerging, too...

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 02:35 PM

Wasn't the Reaper running his own sting operation a few years ago?

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 16, 2007 2:38 PM

Red Zone Channel commentator has the biggest ears I have ever seen. He looks like a Star Trek space alien.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 2:38 PM

They should let OJ take the lead on the investigation to find the "real" culprits.

Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 16, 2007 2:39 PM

Good point.
Memo to self: It's against the law to run your own private sting operation.

Posted by: Ciindy | September 16, 2007 2:40 PM

I stand in awe at the creativity that yielded "Texans" as a team name.

If "Mr." Snyder ever decides to do the right thing and change the 'Skins name, I shudder to think what they'd come up with. Personally, I'd go with the Washington Red Tape, along with team mascot, Filibuster, the costumed timeout.

"I'm just a Bill, just a little ol' Bill, sittin' here on Capitol Hill, and I KNOOW I'll be a law someday, but today I am still just a Bill."

Oh man, that's awesome.

Even though the Skins aren't playing, I have made Skins Mix today. And what might that be? Candy corn and peanuts, a delicious combo that I feel should be named for the local NFL team. We'll have more tomorrow night.

Posted by: Cindy | September 16, 2007 3:19 PM

I'm pretty sure the Bengals had no clue they were going to be in for a fight like this today. Too bad CBS sucks and the game isn't in HD. I hate CBS.

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 3:19 PM

Cindy, assuming the 'Skins end up in the Super Bowl, will the WashPo see fit to let you out of the office and get you to Arizona?

Posted by: P Diddy | September 16, 2007 3:21 PM

So Chad Johnson jumps into the Dawg Pound, gets a beer tossed on him, is thrown back to the field and a guy flips him off! They don't show THAT on the replay!
