Guess that means Jimoh won't be getting burned deep in our secondary anymore...

Posted by: No more! | September 1, 2007 6:12 PM

What does "waived injured" mean, exactly? Which of the cuts do you see on the practice squad?

Posted by: Wichita Falls | September 1, 2007 6:12 PM

4th! I've always wanted to do that......

Posted by: 4th via Home Floor | September 1, 2007 6:12 PM

Can't some of these younger guys like Palmer, Westbrook, Hoag, etc. still be signed to the practice squad?

Posted by: Guy | September 1, 2007 6:12 PM

YEAH Marcus Mason!!

Posted by: NikiH | September 1, 2007 6:13 PM

Thank the Lord!!!!! no more torch I mean Jimoh. You can't tell me that the guy was that much better on "teams" that he was worth the instant touchdown if he ever saw the field. And hooray for Wynn being gone too, great guy, but can't play a lick anymore and is expensive. This staff might finally be seeing the light! I love the cheap youth movement.

Posted by: Jack | September 1, 2007 6:14 PM

Did the TE from DC make it? He was #41 and had dreds..........

????

Posted by: 4th via Home Floor | September 1, 2007 6:14 PM

I hope we sign Trucks to the practice squad. When do those signings happen?

Posted by: Brandon | September 1, 2007 6:15 PM

Anyone who isn't on the 53 man roster can get signed to the practice squad....

Posted by: 4th | September 1, 2007 6:15 PM

It happens as soon as they clear the waiver line....

Posted by: 4th | September 1, 2007 6:16 PM

Looks like they left two roster spots open...

Posted by: Cliff Huxtable | September 1, 2007 6:17 PM

I sort of liked Trucks...maybe it was the name, or the fact that announcers may like saying it, but that guy always seemed to be involved in the play. I would have liked to keep him...everyone else, including Wynn, I can live without. If only they could let go of James Thrash.

Posted by: NikiH | September 1, 2007 6:20 PM

Right. If you been on the 53 man roster at least 8 weeks in season you can't get signed to the P Squad...

Posted by: Bryan | September 1, 2007 6:23 PM

Posted by: Yeah Mason! | September 1, 2007 6:23 PM

Leigh Torrence made the team.

So that means they left one roster spot open, not two, maybe to sign McCardell?

Because they only have 4 WRs now...

Posted by: Cliff Huxtable | September 1, 2007 6:24 PM

Considering they cut 4 WRs, whatcha bet they are talking to Mccardell.

How in the hell does Reed Doughty keep making the team. He hasn't proven crap since he's been here. I know the guy has a sick kid but this is the SJKing NFL not UNICEF

Posted by: Doughty Sucks | September 1, 2007 6:28 PM

So only 4 WR's kept and a spot open. Got to think they are watching who is released around the NFL and will be picking up another wideout or doing some dealing maybe.

He's only been here one year and he was injured part of that. What is it that he should have done by now to make the team a second year? Who should they have kept, Stoutmire?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2007 6:32 PM

Guy - I think you are right. They would have to give him an injury settlement 1st I think, though...

Posted by: B | September 1, 2007 6:38 PM

Heard that the Packers are shopping their drafted kicker and punter and that the Redskins are among the 3 teams they're shopping to. (A reminder that the punter and kicker were both tauted to be among the best ever clutch kickers to come out of college football in the last decade)

What do the Packers need according to the report, you ask? A Running back.

Hmmmm... could that be why we kept Mason? Don't me wrong, I love the guy and am thrilled he's here, but do you think the Skins would drop an RB for 2 clutch kickers potentially?

Discuss.

Posted by: | September 1, 2007 06:32 PM

I'd rather have Stoutmire than Doughty. At least he has proven that he can actually play in the NFL. Why don't you tell me what exactly Doughty has done to make the team? I haven't noticed him do squat myself. It's another case of Gibbs bringing his feelings into play. Just like Boonell.

Posted by: Doughty Sucks | September 1, 2007 6:42 PM

I'm stunned that Fabini wienie is still here. CUT HIM.

Other than that, I expect to see them make a move for a released WR, and possibly those Packers kickers for Rock Cartwright. We have had some problems with kicking since Moseley for goodness sakes.

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 6:44 PM

Or Portis? Or Betts?

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 6:45 PM

Picking up Gabriel is a bad move. He cannot seem to stick to any team. If he were any good he would be on a roster and not cut repeatedly.

Posted by: Skins realist | September 1, 2007 6:53 PM

Posted by: Redskin Ray | September 1, 2007 6:56 PM

I liked Trucks, I thought he played well enough to make the team. I am surprised they cut Wynn and Jimoh, not because they were so talented on the field, but for the character they provided within the locker room. The fact they have only four receivers is very eye opening, they definitely wll get wr in here soon, likely McCardell. I still don't think they are sold on Lloyd and I am almost certain he will be released in the offseason. I guess in the end as everyone says, it is a numbers game.

Posted by: Thoughts | September 1, 2007 6:59 PM

kickers? no way. if so highly touted, the Pack would keep them. maybe the Pack is looking to deal because those kickers are "taut". every rumor has 'Skins in the bidding to drive price up. 'Skins have gone the highly touted route before - John The Quad Hall - and got nowhere. stand pat is the proper course.

Posted by: lifelongfan | September 1, 2007 6:59 PM

"I understand the youth movement going on, but the Redskins have let go of three top-class human beings in Renaldo, Joe and Lemar."

Gonna pull this from the other blog....

Com'on Jason, those guys stink and it showed last year IE - 31st ranked defense.

I'm sure they are "class acts" but we are talking about the 31st ranked defnese last year.

Did I mention 31st ranked defense last year??? Oh yeah, 19 sacks...dead LAST!

Keeping those guys around too long is what got the Skins into trouble last year. Anyone who knows football could see it coming and it showed on the field.

Ade Jimoh stinks too.

Glad they kept Vernon Fox however. I thought he played admirably last year and deserved a shot this year.

just visiting Redskins.com... Wynn was the player profile highlight. Sad.

I was encouraged at looking at the potential starting roster and seeing our own guys that have been here a while or have been drafted. We're heading in the right direction.

Posted by: Dorf | September 1, 2007 7:01 PM

The Redskins had a ton of character in the lockeroom and went 5-11. Character is very important but the Skins need a talent infusion. Wynn is a standup guy but he was making a ton of money for a guy that could not sack QBs. He could not stop the run last season either so his walking papers did not surprise me. In fact I am surprised that Daniels is still around.

Did I see that the Skins kept Chris Wilson and cut Renaldo? I mean I like Wilson, but is he really better than RW?

Posted by: RambleOn | September 1, 2007 7:07 PM

Doughty is the new Jimoh.

Posted by: sir W | September 1, 2007 7:10 PM

I disagre re Gibbs and Doughty. I know Gibbs has the final say, but I'd speculate that he defers to Williams on how the defensive roster shapes out. Actually the special teams coach gets a lot of say around cut time, since most of the borderline guys will see most of their action in special teams anyway.

McCardell was injured most of the preseason and only caught one pass with Houston. Why do we want someone like that? We just got rid of the other one who spent the year on the bench.

Posted by: AJ | September 1, 2007 7:43 PM

Also, why would we trade anybody for kickers somebody else doesn't want and will cut today anyway? Haven't our kickers looked prety decent so far? I mean everyobody else you wonder what preseason means, but kickers are just playing against themselves anyway. Or os it playing with themselves? whatever.

Posted by: AJ | September 1, 2007 7:45 PM

Last as far as character in the locker room goes, I think it is hooey. We have let the least character go this year of the last three, and at least none of these guys had anything left. Anybody remember some character guys that actually could play? Clark? Pierce? Have to admit I haven't heard of a few of the guys they kept, but it can't be much worse than reading about crippled veterans like salavea and wynn every week.

MV Dame's team didn't "lose." They were crushed by the mighty Yellow Jackets. They will never recover. Actually, they're just not very good. Appalachian State would have beat them by 45 points.

To me no real suprises there and expect the skins to sign a wr in the next few days. Yes Cris Wilson is better than Renaldo Wynn. At least Wilson can run after the qb. I like all of the moves that we have made all offseason. Good job to the Gibbs,Cerrato,Snyder trio on getting more talent and less high prices free agent that never produce for us

BUCS KEEP FOUR QUARTERBACKS by Michael David Smith

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released their final cuts, and you won't see the name of any quarterbacks on the list.

The Bucs will keep four quarterbacks, in a bit of a surprise after many expected beleaguered quarterback Chris Simms to get the ax.

Ellis Wyms, Jamie Winborn, Julian Jenkins and Alan Zemaitis are among the most recognizable names who got cut today. Winborn and Wyms were among three vested veterans terminated; the other was tight end Keith Heinrich.

I have to agree with a previous poster about Reed Doughty; He just plain sucks. You can't cut high-character leaders such as Wynn, Big Joe and Marshall, and then court Omar Stoutmire as a free agent with options, detain him all training camp / pre-season, and then turn around and cut him. That makes no sense. If the 'Skins are going to run their team as a business, they have to be consistent (cutting Big Joe, Marshall and Wynn were called 'Business decisions), and then turn around and keep Doughty because they feel sorry for his son. Hell, I have kids, so I feel for him too, but he sucks as a football player. Unlike keeping at least one of the aforementioned high-character guys, Doughty has not, and cannot contribute ANYTHING to our team; besides, the dude is a moron, (he soaked his contacts in what, Visine, the night before the Titans pre-season game? The dude is stupid, he's slow, and he stinks). It just ain't fair to guys like Trucks who played hard and well enough to make the 53. Doughty can't even play specials (A. Trucks can).

Posted by: guisher | September 1, 2007 8:22 PM

4th - i generally agree with your sentiment when it comes to free agency - thought they should have kept Clark and Pierce to say the least - but when it is mano y mano in training camp, i have no trouble with going with youth, athleticism and talent versus experience.

Posted by: lifelongfan | September 1, 2007 8:24 PM

thanks 4th
good stuff on the locals too

Posted by: RBD202 | September 1, 2007 8:27 PM

LLF - I def agee with that point as well. If someone earns a spot then because we can only keep 53 - we def need talent over leadership. especially when leadership gets 33 and over...

I really didn't want an over the hill gang 2.1 in the 1st place. But I will fall in line if we can win a SB this year....

Posted by: 4th | September 1, 2007 8:40 PM

Yeah Boschetti is big ... a big load of crap; they kept this bum over Cedrick Killings last year and paid dearly, (Killings had at least 3 - 4 sacks / QB pressures in the one dominant 10-6 playoff season; Boschetti had none, and will continue to distribute Gatorade this season from the bench). Williams or Gibbs, or whoever the hell keeps making these stupid moves has to understand this is the friggin' NFL, not an adoption agency. If you love the 'no-talent' kid, invite him to marry one of your daughters and have him over for Sunday dinner - don't cheat a guy who's busting his butt out of a roster spot that he's earned!!! Why is this so hard for these bloody geezers to understand. I don't know, you can try to pin these two bone-headed moves on Williams and the defensive coaches, but this has Gibbs' name all over it, (see keeping Brunell, and setting Ramsey adrift, for no intelligent reason other than love). Also, I sure hope Trucks doesn't have to clear waivers before going on the Practice squad (if these idiots even plan to put him on the practice squad), that kid is pretty good, and for once, a 'Skins player doesn't make you cringe in an interview, (note to 'Skins' staff: a guy who can't speak English, is probably pretty stupid - see LaVar Arrington, - and stupid guys can't learn the playbook, and therefore, can't play).

Posted by: guisher | September 1, 2007 8:52 PM

...keep Doughty because they feel sorry for his son.

Posted by: guisher | September 1, 2007 08:22 PM
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

guisher--The coaches see every player in practice everyday. You don't. Why do you assume that Doughty isn't one of the best at safety?

Gibbs has limited time to make his mark in Gibbs 2.0. Why would he throw away an opportunity by keeping the wrong man? If he really feels sorry for the man and wants to throw him a bone, he can hire him in about 300 different positions in the Snyder empire or in his racing team.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 8:55 PM

Quinten Moses was cut by the Raiders. During a couple of months before the draft this guy was talked about as a top 10 DE. He ended up slipping to the third round but he has talent. Any chance we make a push to get him?

Posted by: Rbruce | September 1, 2007 9:04 PM

Guisher 8:52 pm making a strong push for deranged rant of the day! Looking good for him, too--only three hours to go.

Angry, one long paragraph, a triple exclamation mark, and, perhaps most impressively, heroically gathering new steam near the end with the surprising 'speaking English'/intelligent angle.

The only weakness: no all-caps. A bit more study of other top-drawer crazy/angry posts would have helped him on this important element.

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 9:15 PM

Hard to believe that you guys really think that anyone would use one of the precious few 53 spots on their roster to keep a guy that can't help you win. There is a much better chance that even though his overall talent isnt as obvious as some who are gone, he is the best they had at a need situation and they feel his future upside is better. Sometimes you have to carry a guy a year or two before you reap the rewards instead of letting him go and watching him star later somewhere else. Maybe he never comes around, but he is not here because of his son. Freaking ridiculous.

Talent evaluator, I know you don't believe that crap about Doughty; and please don't bore me with that "Gibbs sees him in practice" crap, I've seen him in the GAMES, as have you!! He is constantly out of position, he is slow to the ball and he CANNOT tackle!! It wasn't just Kenny Wright getting burned last year, (I've got all of last season on Tivo, I'd LOVE to burn a DVD and share it with you, so you can see it); I don't want to hear any bloody excuses about him being a rookie, late round draft pick either; so is H.B. Blades, and the Blades kid is obviously going to be awesome. I watched every excruciating play of last season, and I have to believe, if Doughty didn't have a sick kid, his a@@ would not have been let back on the bus after some of those performances!! Nobody's making excuses for any of the other bums on this roster like Jimoh, (their getting cut), so the Skins need to be fair and smart, and keep the BEST players. Stoutmire was a major contributor on another NFL team last season (if not a starter), and the 'Skins brought him back because he was good enough to rotate in at Safety; Gibbs has a grandson with cancer (so I can understand him feeling bad for Doughty; hell, I feel for him, too), and that is why that scrub is on this team. As for Gibbs thinking about his legacy, give me a break! He has become a confused old geezer right before our eyes, (yes, I too was a Gibbs apologist his first two 2.0 seasons), and hopefully, he has the good judgement to admit the game has passed him by, and step down after this year with a shred of dignity left, (if that ESPN report about Cower is correct, where he is trying to up his price for next year by playing hard to get, no worries -- Danny will write the check). Bottom-line Boschetti and Doughty should be gone, right along with Ade Jimoh (who should have been either cut last year, or converted to Safety; it's like the guys at 'Skins Park exist in an alternate universe; Jimoh can hit like a truck, tackle well, and support the run, and is pretty good blitzing the QB, but he couldn't cover a bed with a sheet; why was he not converted to Safety two years ago?)
If you ain't a part of the solution you're part of the what:________?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2007 9:30 PM

Guisher is da man. Reed Doughty sucks. Gibbs needs to realize this is not UNICEF. This the SJKing NFL. So do the rest of you!!!

Posted by: Doughty Sucks | September 1, 2007 9:31 PM

you haven't given us your assessment of the final cuts. What's the good word?

Posted by: farstriker | September 1, 2007 09:19 PM
...........................................

That depends.

If this is the talent evaluator for Jasno to quote in the Post then "As usual, the Redskins organization has lost sight of what plagues their team. They've chosen a bunch of unproven rookies while letting go the character-type guys who know what they're doing. They're probably trying to save money to make another big splash in free agency that will leave them with cap problems until Dan Snyder's in a nursing home."

If it's the other talent evaluator, the one who blogs his guts out just to pass time, then "I'm ecstatic they got rid of so many old guys on defense and started building talent."

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 9:31 PM

Compliment guisher and now he just keeps ranting... first one was better imo... and well about doughty... the whole secondary was consistently out of position last year including the Reaper... so i have a hard time believing that its bc of doughty's kid...

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 9:32 PM

i could read guisher rants all night, keep um coming!!! Also, guisher is right on with every point.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2007 9:34 PM

to the TE who is blogging his guts out, two thumbs up.

Posted by: lifelongfan | September 1, 2007 9:35 PM

TE, they're both good takes. In blog-world I share your RI perspective--I'm glad the team is moving to youth.

Based, of course, on virtually no actual knowledge or impression on my part, just general dissatisfaction with last year and a desire for 'change.'

Posted by: farstriker | September 1, 2007 9:36 PM

guisher,

Thanks for setting me straight on Doughty. I thought you were talking about that guy Chris Daughtry from American Idol. My kids like him, but I don't think he has a son.

You might me right on Doughty. Look, I'll keep an open mind, and I'm sure you will too, on the off chance that I'm right.

Do I understand you're only upset with two of the 53 playuhs on the squad? They got a 96% and you blew a gasket and concluded that none of them know what they're doing?

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 9:41 PM

I feel doggone good about these fifty-three, and I am still ecstatic about Cooley, and if it's all right with you guys I'm just going to enjoy the next week or so and think about all the possibilities... things just feel good around this team right now.

T-minus seven-and-a-half days to kickoff.

HAIL!

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 9:42 PM

Hold up, TE, is guisher complaining about Roger Daltry now? That is completely out of line.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 9:45 PM

Who?

Posted by: farstriker | September 1, 2007 9:46 PM

I'm optimistic about the season but I think we could have done the Redskins nation a lot better if we would just cut Doughty loose now. FDK. Why waste a roster spot on someone who hasn't done SJK?

Posted by: Doughty Sucks | September 1, 2007 9:47 PM

Reed Doughty made the team for his prowess on (kick) coverage.

Posted by: Doughty4Life | September 1, 2007 9:48 PM

Nate, Get serious. You know full well that Roger Daltry uses a walker now and was a complete no-show at camp this year. Can you imagine how guisher would react if he was even on the practice squad.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 9:49 PM

Seriously, this sure is a lot of vitriol to expend over a special teamer/depth secondary guy.

What's your beef with this guy, Doughty haters?

Who would you rather see in that roster spot, Jimoh?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 9:50 PM

I LIKE THIS ROSTER

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 09:50 PM

Nate, I'm thinking some of the haters went to school with Doughty and he was poking their girlfriends, sisters, and/or mothers. Earlier today someone said that Doughty's going to take Ade Jimoh's place on RI.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 9:57 PM

By the way, Doughty has a cool name--a great old-fashioned word meaning 'possessing stout-hearted courage.'

Back in the day you'd speak of a 'doughty warrior.'

So perhaps Gibbs was thinking lexically.

Does that help?

Posted by: farstriker | September 1, 2007 9:58 PM

Nate, how about stoutmire? you don't think he would have been better to keep?

Posted by: T | September 1, 2007 9:58 PM

Posted by: May not be the only one | September 1, 2007 09:54 PM

May not--

Look at the list again, especially the last line in it.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 9:59 PM

I don't care what we saw in training camp or these exhibition games. Roger Daltrey could kick Chris Daughtry's butt today, tomorrow, or ten seasons down the line. Chris Daughtry couldn't carry Roger Daltrey's jock strap.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:00 PM

My Bad. Nice pickup TE

Posted by: May not be the only one | September 1, 2007 10:01 PM

Just to pick one dude off that list of Doughty (not little-d doughty) alternatives: what exactly did Omar Stoutmire ever do for us? The epitome of 'just a guy', IMO.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:02 PM

Anyone have any idea with cooley resigned and wynn now gone what our cap looks like? We had 5-7 mil extra space if i recall correctly... enough to do some damage... or restructure some contracts where we pay the players more this year for a reduced salary next year where we are already over the cap

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 10:02 PM

"Do I understand you're only upset with two of the 53 playuhs on the squad? They got a 96% and you blew a gasket and concluded that none of them know what they're doing?"

Talent Evaluator, to be fair the rest of us - fans and Stevie Wonder could have picked the rest of the roster; Jesus, this is not rocket science, as much as I hate to give them credit, the B-More Ravens have been doing this for years; the formula for picking players for your final 53 is simple - either they have talent OR THEY DON'T!! I'd like to believe that 'Skins execs "Have a plan, and know what they're doin'" (quote from Vinnie Cerrato), but I have to believe that they are still throwing darts at a dart board; I hope I'm wrong this year, (but after Miami clobbers us at home in the opener, you may be as bitter as I am); I've been a long suffering 'Skins fan since 1978. I just wish they would copy what's working (see New England and Baltimore) and stop doing stupid stuff.
I know; It's hopeless -- Goodnight gents.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2007 10:03 PM

And I feel like we've had enough hand-wringing up here already re: Salave'a, Wynn, Marshall, and Jimoh. These are NOT going to be players we miss!

These aren't the regrettable cuts you're looking for. Move along. Move along.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:05 PM

Ah, yes, Stoutmire. Dude's 33 years old and has 11 years in the league. Five different teams have given up on him: Cowboys, Jets, Giants, Skins, and Saints. The man shows lots of promise.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 10:05 PM

Anon at 10:03, it's the opposite of hopeless!

If you haven't taken heart at the front office's behavior since the middle of the last season, you haven't been paying attention.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:08 PM

guisher--If Miami were to beat us in the opener as you predict, it's not going to be because we kept Boschetti and Doughty, is it?

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 10:09 PM

I know, I know, we need results on the field, we're all waiting for the Skins to show us something for multiple consecutive seasons.

But if we don't have hope, if we don't have at least a tiny glimmer of hope, what's the point of being a fan?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:10 PM

"this sure is a lot of vitriol to expend over a special teamer/depth secondary guy.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 09:50 PM "

I guess me and Guisher are the only guys that watched Pierson Prioleau go down in a heap on the opening kickoff last season; this is the friggin' NFL not little league; if one guy goes down, another must step in and at least play the assignment. If you don't think one guy or one play can cost you the game, I too, have the season on Tivo; would you like to watch a few of Warrick Holdman's awesome plays from last year (with a side of Adam 'wrong side' Archuleta)?

Posted by: guishers-revenge | September 1, 2007 10:12 PM

We're really gonna have to buckle down to have any shot at the Penultimatum. It's not likely to get more 'newsy' than today, though I know interest will escalate as we get closer and closer to gametime.

Who the hell planned a holiday weekend when we need people posting comments on the blog??

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:13 PM

Holdman - gone
Archuleta - gone
Prioleau - last year's starter, demoted to backup behind Landry

hello... our roster is getting better. It's getting better. It's getting better.

Posted by: farstriker | September 1, 2007 10:16 PM

Okay, Guisher family, I see your point -- you want someone else occupying that #53 spot on the roster aside from Doughty, who you see as a welfare/pity party case.

I'll concede that it's a strong, reasonable, profound argument, but I'm just not convinced he's a worse player (for what we'll be asking him to do) than any of the other dudes you list.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:18 PM

a fan since 1978? try since early 60's. now those were some bad teams. doughty, stoutmire, wynn. does it really matter if the FO gets only 52 of 53 right? i see jjg as setting the table for his departure as coach -- leaving the cupboard better replenished this time around as compared to his first departure.

Posted by: lifelongfan | September 1, 2007 10:18 PM

Look at it this way... do you have a much better feeling about this team looking at the roster this year... than last year going into the season... i mean come on... we were all scratching our heads about 10 mil for AA, ARE, and BL (plus draft picks for this one)
Plus we got rid of contributing players added no depth cause we had no more money / were blinded. Fast forward to this year... how many FO moves have really made you shake your head and wonder.
Not only am I excited about this team going into this year... i'm also excited about this team for the next several years. We've gotten an influx of youth at multiple positions and don't have to worry about the whole team heading to the geriatrics ward end of the season. The front office had a good offseason... And I attribute this to Gibbs. He's not stupid... he's failed before... but he has always learned from his mistakes and gotten better. We are seeing that I feel with the front office moves this year.

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 10:18 PM

I swear some people like to get worked up over the stupidest SJK...on a day we resign Cooley and make some tough but smart choices on the roster people still be hatin...

Players cut that interest me for two open spots:

- defensive tackle Kimo von Oehloffen

- de kenard lang

- wr mccardell

- wr gabriel

- rb wali lundy

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 1, 2007 10:18 PM

Nate,

Skippy was back and slipped in a few good ones earlier today, so it was a good day if for no other reason. No one does it quite like the Skipster.

What the blog needs is a bit more leadership from Jasno -- what are they doing with the other position on the team, who's going to be the fifth wideout, what were they thinking about the last three cuts/saves, etc. This is the insider stuff that stirs the pot, not all the vitriol.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 10:20 PM

There are plenty of guys who could go down in a heap and drastically alter our season. Duh! This is the NFL. It gets said every few days up here: you don't have starter-quality deep depth at every position. No team does.

We're getting younger, we're getting more talented, and we're starting to keep our own. That looks good from where I sit, blogging my guts out.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:20 PM

Question for everyone who would they have liked to have seen on the roster who didn't make it? I know I was hoping for hoag and trucks... though don't see how trucks could have made it... to many lb's already..

"guisher--If Miami were to beat us in the opener as you predict, it's not going to be because we kept Boschetti and Doughty, is it?"

Mr. Evaluator, in the NFL, as in every sport if you lose by 1 point -- you LOSE! So yes, because Williams plays everybody on defense, and if your cousin, Reed Doughty happens to give up a big play, (like he did time and again last year) that gets the opposition down to the Redzone (on third and long, no less), and then let's say the juggernaut, Ryan Boschetti, over-pursues on a running play, like he does every other time he is on the field, and they score -- guess what, they win, we LOSE. And dude, that makes all the difference, (Remember 5-11 last year? More than 4 of those losses were by less than 10 points 5-11 or 9-7, which do you prefer?)

Posted by: guishers-revenge | September 1, 2007 10:24 PM

I don't know if i missed it earlier in the day... but how did the fantasy draft go for all you RI peeps?

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 10:24 PM

Bramlet has been cut from Atlanta.
Can we pick him up and work out a Brunnell trade?!?!?

I see CB as a guy who could settle in (eventually) as a Charlie Batch kinda guy-- dependable to fall back on in a pinch. That's just me though.

Thoughts?

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 10:25 PM

I'm glad to see we wrapped up cooley... and from the way the contract is structured it seems to be fairly managable cap wise especially over the next two years when we don't have much room.

A few suggestions for posts this week, to stoke the flames and get us rolling to 88,888:

+ how you're hazing, er, welcoming the new Skins beat reporter
+ special Labor Day edition of Monday Morning H-Back
+ battle of the Jasons: which one gets saddled with the permanent nickname?
+ Mike Wiseacre guest blog, with tips on looking smug in photographs
+ heavy metal update
+ Friday morning TCCL's
+ anything that looks even remotely like Redskins news

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:26 PM

In the interest of contributing more to the 88,888, I'm splitting up a few more of my comments! Woo hoo!

As for the Pack trading kickers to the Skins-- I don't see this as a bad choice if we can find a way to pick up a solid NCAA kicker to test out. Frosty looked good in the preseason, but there are still some question marks with Suisham-- he's been a bit inconsistent, and not only that-- an injury puts us in deep schnike.

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 10:28 PM

I wish we could put bramlet back on the practice squad for a year. You have to figure brunell and collins are going to be gone next year ( collins contract up i think) and brunell's is cap hell) then we could have him around.

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 10:28 PM

Nate,
I'm also relieved that they worked out Cooley's deal now. It'd be great to see him as a lifelong Skin in the mold of Tony Gonzalez. That'd be great!

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 10:29 PM

we are going from "say it ain't so Jimoh", to "oh no, it can't be, Doughty".

Posted by: Anonymous | September 1, 2007 10:29 PM

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 10:25 PM

Been there, done that. The coaches know him well and had zero interest in him. They cut him once already. Atlanta is desperate for quaterbacks, and they can't use him. I'd say this one is dead. I'd say Bramlett's had his shots and he will never throw a pass in the NFL.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 1, 2007 10:31 PM

Dante,
Thats why trading Brunnell would be ideal. We cut Palmer (likely headed to the practice squad), where he can potentially be developed into a #3 guy. Brining Bramlet in at #3-- the Europa MVP-- simply can't be as risky as Brunnell down the stretch if both of front guys go out.

I won't be surprised if they renew Collins for another year if they can work Brunnell out of there. All I'm say, if there is any remote truth to Seahawks or the Falcons wanting Brunnell, lets go get Bramlet and get the guy out of here!!

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 10:32 PM

"There are plenty of guys who could go down in a heap and drastically alter our season. Duh! This is the NFL. It gets said every few days up here: you don't have starter-quality deep depth at every position. No team does."

Nate, dude, what are you talking about? Have you seen the Ravens defense play? Their special teams could be our starting defense! No depth?! Are you kidding me? You want to talk about lack of quality depth, look at Boschetti at DT!!

Posted by: guishers-revenge | September 1, 2007 10:32 PM

I have to say nate... I "burned you" as you said it in the rush to 50k before the draft for all the random non-skins comments... but the blog has grown on me quite immensely since then... so hear i am on a sat night doing my best towards the boren penultimatum... and all those guilty of non redskins chatter now have higher level of hell reserved for them

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 10:33 PM

TE,
Possibly true, but how many times have the third stringer had to come to the rescue? The guy has some talent, albeit not a starter's talent, but enough to manage a team and make some solid handoffs or PA-passes in a pinch. And certainly he could move better than the retarded clone of Drew Bledsoe, Brunnell.

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 10:33 PM

1 | Redcoat | LaDainian Tomlinson (RB SD)
2 | Aussie #1 | Shaun Alexander (RB SEA)
3 | 4th Floor | Clinton Portis (RB WAS)
4 | SMACK | Steven Jackson (RB STL)
5 | He Nate Me | Peyton Manning (QB IND)
6 | Aussie #2 | Larry Johnson (RB KC)
7 | dcsween | Carson Palmer (QB CIN)
8 | 4-12 | Frank Gore (RB SF)
9 | kost52 | Joseph Addai (RB IND)

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 1, 2007 10:43 PM

dante - wise's column this am provided food for thought. i remember when allen jettisoned jurgy to the curb in 74 or so and then rued the move when late in the season he couldn't pull jurgy off the bench when the season - making the playoffs - were on the line. contrary to my prior comments about youth, athleticism and talent over experience, i think that qb is the one position where an exception is made. and i say that as a former ramsey fan who thought jjg made a huge mistake with brunell.

Posted by: lifelongfan | September 1, 2007 10:44 PM

My fantasy squad looks just good enough to lose a close game every week. Just like every fantasy team I've ever fielded.

The one thing I'm miffed about is getting the Iggles' D. Barf.

Lifelongfan,

Yeah last week i was all over trading brunell and now i'm not sure for the reasons mentioned by you and wise (i'm not old enough to remember 74)

i think the nfl would get much better overall quality of play from its quarterbacks if every team was allowed an 'untouchable practice squad' for 2 qbs to develop for a couple years

Posted by: Dante | September 1, 2007 10:48 PM

I got the Dolphins D, Nate. Here's to them getting me minus-12 fantasy points in week 1!

Posted by: 4-12 | September 1, 2007 10:50 PM

And anybody got any QBs to trade? Upon further review, Jon Kitna and Brett Favre aren't going to get it done

Posted by: Real | September 1, 2007 09:59 PM

Real, competition for roster spots generally takes place at particular positions - so they did not keep Doughty over Marshall, Wynn or Salavea. We needed a back up safety and I hope that you are not suggesting that you would rather see Salavea or Wynn chasing wide receivers downfield? Only Stoutmire and arguably Jimoh (who is a cornerback but is good at special teams) competed against Doughty. The reason they kept Doughty over Stoutmire is simple - one player is 24 years old while the other one 33 years old. As for Jimoh, I cannot think of another Redskin player, who was burned more for touchdowns. He was only good on special teams, but now the team has enough players, who are just as good or better in this area, which made him expendable.

Posted by: 4-12 | September 1, 2007 11:00 PM

the problem I have with Gibbs, since his 2nd return is that he has too much favoritism, towards his assistants after dockery left as a free agent they had a chance to snap up Edwin mulitalo, from the Ravens, and pay him the same amount of money they are paying kendall the only reason they didn't get Mulitalo, is because Buges, didn't want him despite the fact Casey Rabach, and Earnest Byner, vouched for him what that says to me is that when it comes to football, adding someone no matter the position Gibbs, always tries to get their opinion i'am not saying that is a bad thing, but you can't allow your assiatant coaches to make the decisions for you that's when you lose credibility.

Posted by: armen | September 1, 2007 11:18 PM

That was something, wasn't it?!?!??!

App State deserves madddd props for that win. I'm a grad student/ teacher at Indiana U, a Big 10 rival, so to see them go down like that... priceless.

I bet Mike Hart and Chad Henne are wishing they went out for the draft now! Suckers.

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 1, 2007 11:21 PM

Dante,
Thanks for the Brunnell article-- that was a great read!

Wise definitely has a point there about Brunnell, but I still think that we should only have one veteran QB here now and pick up Bramlet as #3. That's me though.

Posted by: TDawg | September 1, 2007 11:24 PM

From the AP:

"Former star running back Priest Holmes was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list, guaranteeing that his absence from the game will stretch to almost two years.

After their first six games, the Chiefs will have a three-week window to activate their career rushing leader.

Holmes, 33, hasn't played since Oct. 30, 2005, when a brutal hit from San Diego's Shawne Merriman aggravated a potentially dangerous spinal condition. The three-time Pro Bowl player spent last season at home in Texas."

Periculum . . . comment?

Well, clearly, it was the only way KC could hide Holmes from us.

Re: The Mulitator... betcha we made him an offer, but the Lions offered him a better chance to start.

Or else the Mulitator thought the Lions gave him a better chance to get to the Super Bowl -- hey, 375 lbs., but only 3 lbs. of brain.

Or who knows, maybe the money was better.

Maybe Palmer aced his wonderlics. You know how we Up Here like our "super smart" players.
I don't think that there could be any way to edit the game film into a quality performance. Unless they spliced in scenes from Rudy.

Wow, what a day of sports... I'm truly speechless (Michigan loses to App. State on the same day that a rookie tosses a no hitter for Boston?!)

I'm about to head out for the night, headed to the Mock Crest to try my luck with the Univ. Portland girls (I keep telling myself that at 27 it is still o.k. for me to go after the college crowd--as long as they're juniors/seniors.).

So Nate, what's a "Staggering Pirate"?

Almost one week to go! We can make it!

I'm sure Renaldo Wynn is a fine human being, but as a football player: good riddance. He hasn't made a play (that I can remember) in his 5 years as a Redskin. Locker room leadership is great, but if you don't make the plays, you have to go. Especially if you make the money Wynn made.

This is what Sonny would ask Sam when Ade Jimoh got beat for many yards and/or a TD. Sam's response in a 2005 preseason game:

'Doesn't seem like he can cover anybody!'

May Ade find his way onto the 'David Terrell Redskins Practice All Stars' for guys that must have been great practice players to have been kept around for so long.

No problem, good sir. You see, they don't cancel colleges on Labor Day-- staff gets to go home, but we teachers have to wipe the sleep out of our eyes and show up dissheveled and slightly pissy.

Consequently, I'm taking this lovely weekend to get ahead in prepping for my classes, so I'll be dropping in and out at inordinately incongruent times to holla a bit.

I'm thinking that a role call is order the next weekend! I'm actually gonna be back in Maryland for a couple days-- anyone want to meet up in Fredneck or some place close to it?

Posted by: TDawg | September 2, 2007 4:30 AM

This post is merely a statistic.

Posted by: TDawg | September 2, 2007 4:31 AM

"Tyler Palko lacks the prototypical height and arm strength for the QB spot. His arm is not poor, but he doesn't have a cannon. His height may cause him some problems seeing the entire field behind his line while in the pocket. Palko has also had the tendency to try and force some big plays and it leads to questionable decisions at times."

A short back-up QB with a weak arm? We already have one of those.

Posted by: The Crickets | September 2, 2007 5:03 AM

Posted by: cload and daggar | September 1, 2007 11:45 PM

It will be interesting to see if the league lets that slide. He was injured playing, and hasn't played since. Non-football injury, my SJK.

Posted by: O-O | September 2, 2007 5:06 AM

Didn't Jasno suggest that they would put TE Tyler Ecker on the practice squad after he recovers from his groin injury?
For that scenario, and I would guess Sartz as well, they still have to clear waivers, right?

Posted by: cload and daggar | September 2, 2007 12:08 AM

Tyler Ecker went on IR. He has already cleared waivers. Regular IR means he is done for the year (no chance to go to practice squad). Otherwise, they have to agree to an injury settlement, release him, and later sign him again.

Sartz has to clear waivers before he can be signed to the practice squad. With the waive/injury designation, it seems likely that he is headed towards IR also.

Posted by: O-O | September 2, 2007 5:13 AM

I sort of like it, but I don't quite get "Area 51" as a name which invokes lust for mayhem, ferocity, imminent pain, etc.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 2, 2007 12:33 AM

Hey Nate,

Believe it or not, someone up here mentioned that "Area 51" nickname for Landry/Taylor back in April, either just before or right after the draft. It might take a lot of reading to find it again, unless Cindy can do a phrase search with her admin software.

"Lust for Mayhem" - maybe not as eloquent and elegant as "Endeavor to Persevere", but it works for me.

Posted by: O-O | September 2, 2007 5:23 AM

Jasno's column this morning has this tantalizing nugget -- "The roster is at 52 players, with one open spot that seems to be earmarked for a wide receiver, and additional transactions are likely next week." Oooh, oooh, oooh, Mr. LaCanfora, tell us more!

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 2, 2007 7:59 AM

boy if our scouting department is this good... who needs draft picks... ;-)

Posted by: Dante | September 2, 2007 9:09 AM

From the times article
"By releasing Wynn and Jimoh, linebacker Khary Campbell is the only defensive player who predates Gibbs' return in January 2004."

Why is Khary Campbell still around?

Posted by: Dante | September 2, 2007 9:12 AM

As a Michigan alum yesterday was FAR from a dark day, but the beginning of the end of Lloyd Carr's follies. Another 7-4 year (at best) and another loss to O-St. will seal the deal and allow Michigan football to move into the 21st century by removing the vestiges of the 70's.

Funny how ex-Michigan coaches like Frank Beamer and Cam Cameron can move on and move up with their program, but da' Blue gets stuck with the dinosaurs.

Posted by: adinasi | September 2, 2007 9:13 AM

Dante,

What I was wondering about was the contrast between "several rookies made the sqaud" and "despite long odds." It seems to me that if several made it, the odds weren't really that long.

I wonder how many rookies there are on other NFL rosters. Are we above or below average?

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 2, 2007 9:17 AM

TE... i would guess we are right about average when you figure that 5 rookies made the team... 2 drafted and 3 undrafted... what i think is abnormal (and i could be wrong... its why i was bringing this up) is the fact that we had 3 undrafted rookies make the team.
So in the case of several rookies making it despite long odds... jasno is talking about the undrafted rookies... as they always face long odds to make the squad... so I think that 1 undrafted making the squad is rare but probably still happens a decent amount of time... but for three undrafted rookies to make it... well that says something either our team is that bad or our front office was really lucky

Posted by: Dante | September 2, 2007 9:27 AM

either our team is that bad or our front office was really lucky

Posted by: Dante | September 2, 2007 09:27 AM

My money's on "really lucky." There just seems to be a large, random element in predicting who can make it in pro football (said the talent evaluator), even at the top of the draft where the scouting is most intense. It's like five-card draw. The scouting gives you two cards, then you bring them into camp and draw three. Sometimes you have a full house, but mostly you just fold 'em.

QB - Nate in the PDX. The blog simply goes to hell without Nate starting at QB. The leader of the RI hamster quest for the Boren Ultimatum.

WR - AMTTS (an obvious choice) and ...

Ah, crap, I am procrastinating from work. Can I get some help from RI Nation on our starting lineup?

None of the Pats' second-day picks survived. After the first two rounds, all the elite athletes are picked over, your third rounder may have one or more limitations but fill a need, but beyond that you're either trying to restock (like the Pats) or reload if you have a lot of holes to fill (like, ummm, you-know-who).
I'm sure there's some minimal difference between a 4th rounder and an undrafted player, but it seems to me that the physical and mental tools are too close to call.
Then it comes down to: does the
