McCardell Visit
Scheduled tocome 9in on Monday for a visit. This will be his second trip to The Park and I wouldn't see them bringing him in without planning on signing him assuming he is in decent shape and passes a physical.
Don't see them taking a cvap hit on Lloyd now and might as well wait throught he end of the season to see if you end needing WRs, but you have to think if they get back to carrying 6 WRs then he his days of being active are dwindling.
We shall see next week.
Cheers.

SCskin - nope you were the only one and you are of course correct. One of my fav movies ever.

sfskin, I watched that hamster video several times. I agree that Yoder was out of position.
Anybody else hurt enough to be put on IR? Fox? I know he's a solid teams tackler, so maybe that's bad. Anybody else notice Lloyd, Brandon as the second to the last guy on Suisham's right during kicks?

McCardell visit is curious-
1. Keeping 6 WRs? - doubtful
2. Moss more injured than team letting on? - really hope not (spells certain doom for team)
3. Cutting The Receiver? - unlikely due to cap hit
4. Cutting Ricochet? - unlikely since he was just signed
5. Cutting Thrash? - the only option left
Am I missing something? Thoughts?
Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 27, 2007 5:54 PM
Will Keenan be coaching? Because honestly that is where we need to tap free agency, is for a bit of a better coaching approach, not necessarily another WR.Being a LONG time fan I know I will be sent to Redskins hell, a Super Bowl Party in the mid 90's where the Cowboys win, for questioning Saint Joe however all 3 weeks this year there have been some odd situations.
1. Kicking FG on 1st Down in OT in Miami = +
2. The whole pre-halftime debacle in Philly = ?, we lucked out
3. Final drive against the N.Y. Gints = - - - - bad bad bad
I love ya Joe but with Danny boys $ maybe we need to hire a million per year game manager.
Posted by: Mofass | September 27, 2007 5:56 PM
For what it is worth, Adam Schefter said he thinks it is more the Skins looking for a 3rd wide receiver they feel comfortable with rather than Moss being badly hurt. Schefter said they have been searching for awhile (guess he meant all offseason) so that probably means Caldwell is not lighting them up in practice.
He also said McCardell will be signed on Monday - so I imagine that Randy Thomas will be placed on IR, right? Or will they release Caldwell? Or someone else?
Posted by: Lisa | September 27, 2007 5:59 PM
lisa, they're still carrying 6 safeties. won't be surprised at all if one of them gets cut.

hey kost, would to re-post the pool.
I think that I am SJKed, cause it seems less and less likely that he will even catch a ball. He should be inactive very soon!
Posted by: gethanr13 | September 27, 2007 6:49 PM
I don't see the point in signing McCardell; they are probably going to leave him inactive for several weeks and even if he gets in the game they are not going to throw his way. The Skins passing game is elementary at best and that has nothing to do with Campbell or Al Saunders (Gibbs is the answer).

Which is a bigger athletic achievement?
x) Setting the all-time homerun record?
Q) Setting the all-time touchdown pass record?
(let's assume all athletes involved are not juicing)

All time home run record is more of an achievement. It has only been broken twice in 75 years.

Thrash won't be cut. That you can take to the bank. His value on special teams outweighs any thoughts of that. McCardell might be coming in because Reche Caldwell wasn't what they expected in practice. Another possibility may be that they cut the Receiver to set an example. I believe that even with a cap hit that example is more important than the financial considerations. Hopefully, they can finagle a way around them ...

Do the Redskins really need a 37 year old receiver? Thrash seems old, but is only 32. He's a more than adequate #3 or #4 receiver, down field blocker, and special teams player.
Given the injuries on the O/D-lines -- it would make more sense to pick up an additional backup guard, tackle, or defensive lineman...

THEISMANN OUT AT ESPN
ESPN spokesman Mac Nwulu tells us that Joe Theismann is no longer affiliated with the network.
Here's the official statement: "We have reached a settlement with Joe Theismann to end his association with ESPN. We thank Joe for his many years of work for us and wish him well."
The move isn't surprising. After taking Theismann out of the Monday Night Football booth, ESPN refused to fire Theismann, since to do so would have required the network to buy out his contract. And Theismann wasn't going to quit, since taking whatever piddly assignments that ESPN threw his way -- and getting paid a salary based on being on MNF -- was a lot more financially attractive than getting nothing. So after several months of each side waiting for the other side to blink, a deal was reached.
Presumably, Theismann will get some of the money that remained to be paid under his contract, but not all of it.
So ends a relationship that extended over more than three decades. And it came about without a party or a press conference or any other proclamation. Instead, ESPN replaced Theismann with Seth Wickersham on the expert picks page of ESPN.com, and apparently presumed that no one would notice.
The fact that ESPN had nothing to say about the departure before the departure was detected by visitors to ESPN.com tells us that ESPN isn't particularly happy about how the relationship ended. The fact that Theismann spent a good bit of his time whining on the record, and on the air, about his removal from MNF probably had something to do with that.
UPDATE: Nwulu says that, under the deal, Theismann is free to work immediately with any other media company. (Maybe he'll send us an application.)
Guess who will have a new XXX Radio Show?

Oct 7, 2007: Clark Going in to Ring of Fame
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Site Staff
WarpathInsiders.com Sep 27, 2007
Landover, MD- The Washington Redskins announced today that wide receiver Gary Clark will be inducted to the Redskins Ring of Fame at FedExField during the October 7, 2007 game against Detroit Lions.
"Gary is a well-deserved addition to the Ring of Fame," said Redskins Owner Daniel M. Snyder. "A Redskin to the core, he has displayed intelligence, toughness, integrity and a winning attitude. That's something we all applaud."
Clark began his professional career with the USFL's Jacksonville Bulls in 1984. Later that year, he was drafted in the second round (55th overall) by the Washington Redskins in the USFL Supplemental draft. During his first season with the Redskins in 1985, Clark finished with 72 catches for 926 yards and five touchdowns despite starting just ten games. In his second year as a Redskin, he earned his first of four trips to the Pro Bowl (1986, 1987, 1990, 1991).He was an integral part of winning Super Bowl XXII and Super Bowl XXVI with the Redskins. He played eight of his 11 NFL seasons with the Redskins, finishing his career with 699 receptions for 10,856 yards and 65 touchdowns. Clark also had twenty-seven 100-yard games as a Redskin.
After eight seasons with the Redskins, Clark went to the Phoenix Cardinals for the 1993 season. As a Cardinal in 1994, he became the first NFL receiver to catch 50 or more passes in the first 10 seasons of his career. He retired from the NFL after spending the 1995 season with the Miami Dolphins.

You know, I can honestly say that I have never talked about B. Lloyd. I have never really viewed him as a player. But after that blow up he had on tv at the end of the season last year, I have had nothing but hate for the man. And he seriously looks like a turd burgler after he actually catches a pass. Unfortunatly we have not seen this g a y parade since he has not caught a ball yet this season. But we did see a glimpse of this during the one of few catches against the Stillerz in the preseason. If any of these words are mis-spelled, or this makes no sense, its becaue I am 12 deep and 1 too many blizzies to be able to spell or speak. If you don't know what a blizzie is, let's just sum it all up as a single rolled stale philly.

I really like sayinf Keenan McCarDELL, but he ain't the answer.
This team has squandered too much money on bad signings from Deion ro the WR to Archulettus to Spurrier to George to Arrington td nauseum, made too many bad draft picks to be a major challeneg to the elites for at least three to five years.
MAYBE if there was a Betherd style genious makign the picks instead of VInnie Baby and Joe Gibbs, but this team is middle of the road toast.
Posted by: Corkcynic | September 28, 2007 1:43 AM
I agree to an extent, Corky. But I don't think anybody signed off the street in week four is ever thought of as "the answer." Unless it's a really dumb question.
This feels more like a stopgap to me, an insurance policy against something Serious afflicting Santana.
And it also makes me think that Ray-Shay hasn't exactly set the practice field on fire.
Picking up TWO old dudes off the street during the season to help out at WR sure ain't inspiring much confidence. -Capt. Obvious

DTC--In the 2005 draft, Pacman was taken #6, Antrel Rolle #8 (Arizona), and Rogers was #9. Next DB was Fabian Washington, #23 (Raiders). Personally, I think the Redskins picked the best of those four.

So many of you called me names.
I'd also like to point out that I asked Michael Wilbon if we'd go after TJ Duckett in one of his chats well before we actually did. Wilbon answered my question like I had two heads. Something like, "are you kidding me..."

Ok, and I still dont understand. Because you are not making sense. You are reading into the fact that I did not say they suck and thinking that I like them?
To Clarify:
Caldwell should be cut since he hasnt been activated, obviously he hasnt shown anything.
McCardell hopefully will actually see the field so we can assess if he is a 3rd wr.
And I hate B Lloyd and I have stated as much in the past.

Reche will still be on the team and Santana will be fine for Detroit. Thrash will be on the roster. I really don't know what they will do with Lloyd but his future isn't looking good. You know what really makes me sick, two years ago Plexiglass was looking for a home and nobody really wanted him. He didn't sign with the Gmen until his second trip to NY which was on March 17th. My question....why didn't the Skins bring him in? Now look what he is doing to us. Again poor personnel management.

Also in response to DTC above, the visions of Plaxico running past Double Move are fresher, and therefore more horrifying this week, but they have not completely supplanted the brutal visions of our entire defense chasing Tiki Barber downfield.

Posted by: Chris Larry | September 28, 2007 9:55 AM
Hi Greg, I think you've missed my point. I'm not trying to say "my team is better than yours" or spin anything.
What I AM trying to say is that I think both teams find themselves in a similar position at this point in time - regardless of current W/L count.
Both teams had misfiring elements last year (defense for you, offense for us). Both teams invested significantly in addressing that in the off-season.
Both teams had elements that seemed to be either good or improving enough to not need so much investment (offense for you, defense for us).
And yet we find ourselves in similar situations inasmuch as our defense is now our Achilles heel and your offense is misfiring.
All I'm sayin' is the teams are closer than the records suggest. We're supposed to have an 'inferior' offense to most teams yet we've scored 61 points this season. We're losing because we can't stop people on D when we need to.
You're D has worked hard to get off the field but the offense isn't (always) cashing in on that and if they can't you might find yourself looking at a season like last year.
Do I think Miami is better than Washington? No. But I don't think a 16-13 O/T win at home suggests that Washington isn't much better than Miami either.
We had 3 first downs inside the 10 in the game, you had none. The final score doesn't lie - we didn't do enough to win so we didn't deserve to win; but let's not make that fractional difference into some vast air of superiority for you over us - our teams are not that far apart right now.
And maybe that's why Gibbs is still erring on the conservative side - not always, but a little more often than I think some of you would like.

This is how bad it's gotten with the inability of the front office to improve the WR corps for three years now.
Kennan McCardell? Reche Caldwell? There's a reason these guys were on the street.
It's pathetic.
If Moss is a no-go for Detroit we will have a really hard time scoring more than 24 points. That means 2-2, folks.
And I don't know how this gets fixed for next year -- the potential free agents are not attractive and even first round WRs rarely find success in their rookie season. And there isn't a Demetrius-Williams-type project on the roster to hope for either.

And the reasons I say we don't compare to the Saints is twofold:
5. The expectation on them was/is orders of magnitude greater than on us.
7. The Saints offense (if fit) is probably still good enough to get them to a wildcard in the NFC. NO WAY ours is from here, even if we could somehow conjure up a 10-6, which would be incredible from 0-3 when we still have to play the Patriots twice this year.

Okay Greg, let's try this statistically.
Redskins 2-1, versus teams with a combined record of 2-7.
Dolphins 0-3, versus teams with a combined record of 6-3.
When you've played Dallas twice, the Eagles again and the Patriots once, and we've played the Patriots twice and the Giants and Eagles once, maybe we'll have a better idea of who's record is better.
I have a feeling that the records will look pretty similar by then because we will have played the woeful Bills twice as well.
If you're record is still better than ours I shall happily bow to your superiority - intellectual as well as footballing.
What say you?
By the way, I too would take close victories, but I would worry that we would fall away at some point if we couldn't get clear of other teams. Although it's certainly not an issue for us this year!! :-)

I know Moss has some clutch catches, and long catches, as well as drops.
But ARE has really stepped up, with a TD and key catches as well. Really he and Moss are the same type of player.
So losing Moss wouldnt be crippling. It would make it hard as ARE gets single cover on the lesser of two CB's and now would get more attention.
But Maybe B Lloyd is the #2 and he shows something. You gotta figure if he is #2, he would be on the field more with more opportunities.
Not saying he will produce, but he def did not have many chances as #3, not that he warranted more looks. But if he is forced into the line-up by injury, maybe he will surprise.

Oy VEY!
I just couldn't take thinking about this crap this week. But my job is now so boring, I can't take that either! lmgo.
I apologize for crawling under a rock for a few days, but after the way I shot my mouth (fingers) off about Area51 last week, I just couldn't deal. Sue me.
In my defense - they weren't put in position to lay a lickin' on no one in the 2nd half - so it's not exactly their fault.
Obviously, the O-line has a way to go to keep this team in games. The way this team is set up this year, we can't have the offense completely stymied for a half. It just won't work that way.
So I offer my condolences to all and my support to the team for their ol' college try after the ARE return.

CMoney--
Most would say that they have improved the WR corps. In the last three years they've added Moss and Randle El. Isn't that an improvement over Rod Gardner, Taylor Jacobs?
As for this inane comment "there's a reason these guys are on the street" isn't that a tautology. Is there anyone on the street who's not there for a reason?
In the third week of the season, if someone's hurt, you've got to sift through the "on the street for a reason" guys. What is your solution? Trade some future draft picks for someone else's third or fourth receiver?
Look, there's enough wrong with the front office without having to stretch and blast them for looking at McCardell or Caldwell.
Posted by: talent evaluator | September 28, 2007 10:19 AM
Dik,
It definitely seemed like the whole team lost their lust for may hens in the second half.
Maybe after eating some crow, they will come back hungry against the Lions.

Boy these 'not' jobs are tediously unimaginative aren't they....

Hi SC. It's actually fairly restrained right now. The people who have been calling for Cam's head ever since we hired him are still calling for it and will continue to do so until we %) win something or C) he quits.
However most people are in the "we are who we thought we are" camp. We're not good enough to contend and the point of this season will be to see if we've finally righted the ship on offense, and secondly if we have to totally blow-up the defense in the off-season (my gut says we do and we will).
We got way younger on offense this year - I think an average of about 5 years per player - although that gets worse if you factor in Trent!! - and that part of the team is showing signs of life, but the D - ugh....
Posted by: Redcoat | September 28, 2007 10:22 AM
I'll talk some Saints:
Lay off the skill positions - they're doing fine. No one could have any production when the O-Line is a siv. (See Washington game against Giants....durrrr).
I am flabbergasted why the national media hasn't reviewed this point at all, other than "it ain't sexy to talk O-Line"...
Posted by: Dik | September 28, 2007 10:24 AM
Re: Saints, I think they're all surprised that Drew Brees looks SO sketchy back there Dik.
He's looking more like David Carr than Drew Brees right now. I appreciate that's at least in part because of the o-line, but boy has he made some BAAAAD throws too.
Posted by: Redcoat | September 28, 2007 10:26 AM
RC-
I agree with your analysis of the 'Fins-'Skins in terms of talent and upside. Both teams should be happy to get to 8-8. In the sorry NFC, that is a wildcard appearance. In the AFC East, probably bottom of the division.
How's Zach looking for this week? How do the 'Fins match up against the Raiders?
Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 28, 2007 10:28 AM
Oh yeah, I was also wondering what RI Nation was thinking about the upcoming Iggles-Gints street fight Sunday night.
I predict the Iggles put up more points than the Gints in an offensive shoot-out. Should be fun to watch.
Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 28, 2007 10:32 AM
I just chevcked it out, Brees has 1 TD and 7 INTs this year, yuk. He has a total QB rating of 57.1 and he's 32nd of the 34 on the list at ESPN, above only Grossperson and Tarvaris Jackson.
Posted by: Redcoat | September 28, 2007 10:33 AM
Way to work the metaphor, SCS! ;-)
Again, if they weren't so darned tired (O-Line problems) & placed out of position (Prevent D) - I'm sure we would have heard from them in the 2nd half.
Redcoat - I do think that there is a fundamental philosophical difference between our teams. Additionallly, we're a year removed from our coaching switch.
But we have certainly both screwed ourselves in draft pics & cap room.
Posted by: Dik | September 28, 2007 10:36 AM
Greg has def. been a bit salty. I've noticed as well.
RC, I always laugh at people who show the records against. It is flawed logic. After two weeks we had played two teams with a combined record of 0-4. Guess what two of those 4 loss' those teams had were to us. You have to remove both teams records from the equation or it's a self fullfilling prophecy.
Posted by: Skinz | September 28, 2007 10:39 AM
Yeah - but count how many seconds Breeze has when he drops back - it's like 2! Every Dropback! No one could produce in that situation. Something happened to that line. They can't run block and they can't pass block. The pics are a direct result of panic.
This is a situation where the obvious stats belie the situation - the offense has no time to do anything.
Posted by: Dik | September 28, 2007 10:40 AM
I think ZT will be a game-time decision SC, but he's certainly practising. Longer term it may be good for us if he doesn't play because Crowder is getting experience at MLB which is where he will play when Zach retires. Crowder screwed some plays up on 3rd and 'x' situations that kept drives alive for the Jests, but how else is he going to learn?
As for us vs. Raiders, I think we will be able to move the ball on them - not tons, but enough. And I think we should be able to stop them - you can be sure there will be plenty of blitzes on Daunte, that's for sure!
My gut says we maybe win 17-13, it will probably be a game much like our one in week 1, I just hope we can finish a little better, as 0-4 would be real ugly.

I hear what you're saying Skinz, but they will be meaningful over the course of the season.
On our side: Do I think the Cowgrrls will have a winning season? Sadly, yes. Do I think the Jests will have a winning season? Sadly, yes (grrrr). Do I think Washington will have a winning season? Maybe, if you can get the offense working, yes.
On your side: Do I think we will have a winning season? Probably not, 8-8 would be good. Will the Eagles? Probably yes if the real McNabb is back and stays healthy, but boy you met him at a good time!! Giants? Probably not.
Oh, it doesn't really matter what I'm trying to say, I hear you Skinz - bad comparison on my part.
Dik, when you say "different fundamental philosophy" what do you mean? I'm intrigued.

That was a terrible loss on Sunday but we have to maintain some perspective. We are 2-1 and a very competitive team all around. I summoned the courage to watch the second half tape of the Giants game and it actually, strangely, made me feel a little better. No doubt about it. We got whipped. Coaching was bad, execution was bad, false starts and fumbles were bad. And the Plax catch and run was actually far worse on tv than it seemed in person.
But after all that, ARE had a great gutsy return to the 35. And, Jason, for all the things he did wrong Sunday, stood in the pocket in the face of great pressure and made some bigtime throws repeatedly on that final drive (even after a 3rd and long completion was called back for holding on Rabach). He looked unfazed.
Moreover, though occasionally Cooley was left alone with Strahan that was largely a factor of the Giants blitzing which the line picked up fairly well given how little time they have been together. One time Wade went to help Fabini instead of helping Cooley and that allowed Strahan to take Cooley one on one but this side of the line is all back-ups and has never played together. It will get better with time.
That is not to say we should accept this loss. We shouldn't and the team shouldn't. But I am not ready to press the panic button yet.

Seems to me the difference between G 1 and G 2 is a lack of killer instinct. In G 1, when we had a tema down by 2TDs to start the second half, we would come out and try to lay a couple more on them, especially within the division. KILL was the word of the day. Has a kinder gentler G 2 come to coach us?

Kost,
Thanks for reposting the pool.
I really don't see the obsession with 3rd WR. I agree with 'the reporter' that we should have ran the ball more last game - especially with the running backs. On the other hand, I don't have any faith with the right side of the line to open holes. If Moss is healthy, I wouldn't mind throwing deep ten times on the Lions to try to set up the run. However if he's not 100%, I would like to see five or six runs in a row to set up the occasional deep ball.
I was a big optimist going into the season - primarily due to the health of our starters. Now health is an issue and consequently my optimism has waned. Still, the knee-jerk reactions from some 'fans' is nauseating.
The 'skins should be competitive in every game this year. If the quick decision making improves from the top down, we may have football in January.
Posted by: bangkokben | September 28, 2007 11:00 AM
I'm going to side with Dik and James Tuthill and say that if you guys can fix the current issues, you could still have a 9 or 10 win season, but you're going to have to fix them this week before things start going backwards.
Now for us? Not so good.

Redcoat - Don't get too down, you'll get a win soon! The Dolphins are scheduled to play Notre Dame this year yeah??

Redskins 2-1, versus teams with a combined record of 2-7.
Dolphins 0-3, versus teams with a combined record of 6-3.
Redcoat it's too early in the season to make the above comparison. Plus it doesn't help you. Five of the six wins by teams who have defeated the Finless come from two teams. That means one team's sole win for the season is vs Miami. Redskins record demonstrates they have feasted on the poor, which is what they are supposed to do. At the end of the season, it's Ws that determine whether you make the playoffs and they don't use video of how your got 'em.

Posted by: kost52 | September 28, 2007 11:11 AM
Yes it was. No issues with the Argies Z, there are a few who have graced the EPL for many years now.
The issue that some people have with Tevez is more about him playing for West Ham last year and his goals keeping them in the EPL when he wasn't actually their player!! Me? I could care less.
The thing I've enjoyed about Man U in these last few years of Ferguson's reign is that they play high-tempo soccer but still play it with a great deal of skill. They're always fun to watch. Unlike Chelski....

I think we're neither. We're just not very good. :-(
Posted by: Redcoat | September 28, 2007 11:21 AM
Randle El has a 21.6 yards per catch average. He hasn't been too shabby on punt returns either. They have Thrash. I am thinking they just need a 3rd young wide receiver from the draft. Moss seems to have become injury prone. And then a 4th receiver to back up Randle El. Fourth/Fifth wideout has to always be James Thrash.
At least they now have 2 starting wide receivers instead of 1 plus an assortment of backups led by James Thrash.
Its the OL that is now a problem. Jansen has had two major leg related injuries. Randy is now injury prone. They are going to have to come up with some youngsters who can step up next year. Its why they are having so many problems running the football.
And then there is cornerback.
I think the DL is reasonably set. LB's reasonably set. Obviously safety is their deepest position.

Hope you're right, but not so sure about the shootout prediction. Dawkins and Brown (PB safety and corner) are probably going to be back in the Iggles secondary, so this should greatly improve the pass D. As for the O, Westbrook has rib issues and Lions D is god awful. Gints D seemed to get their act together in the 2nd half of the Skins game; think this would be a much better test of if/how well and Iggles O is returning to form.
Still, I think this is an away game we can steal to get back into the division race.

Thanks Skinz, I'm happy to be here.
Z, Man U have never really used Ronaldo as a central striker, he is much more of an old-fashioned winger whose job is to make goals for others. When you think Ferguson bought him for about half of what he got from Madrid for Beckham you can see what a great piece of business that was!
Everyone got p*ssed with him to begin with over the stepovers, but he's always been much more than that and he's shown that for the last couple of years, he's really matured as a player.
I saw the Brazilian girl Kost and she does look really skillful, although there's some truly awful defending going on with her a lot of the time - she looks like she uses the same moves a LOT and the way to play someone like that is just to stand off and wait rather than dive-in. You can usually take the ball right off their toe when they start spinning.
I use it on the 20 year-old guys I play at soccer all the time!

There once was a time when I too came here for the inside scoop on the happenings of my favorite team. But the inside information turned into a society of blogocrats that bragged about their aristocratic instrumentalities and unparalleled genius and wealth while snubbing the average fan.
Not all of us can be private financiers of our own mega dork enterprise or spend valuable time wasting away wine tasting and lusting after hot babes. The society of anons believes most of the diatribe is smoke and mirrors that help your poor geeky tormented souls feel better about your pocket protector and taped up glasses.
We must at some point come to a time and place where the cybersophisticates not allow themselves to denigrate the paper hat and burger flipping generation just to get a decent night sleep.
Also in regular attendance are the pompous and self appointed sophisticated and thoroughly boring blogocrats that go on with the endless diatribes of blah, blah, blah about everything that is not related to the subject at hand. Don't get me wrong I love a nice cool refreshing PBR but you dorks have turned a national icon of a beer into another one of your trashy microbrews.
So now you have some insight as to the thoughts and motives of the name droppers and the anons that frequent your blogosphere. Not all the droppers and anons are strangers to many of you but feed off the hypersensitivity and the over zealous defense of your great blog name.

And if we're on the subject of the WWC, Greg Ryan may have put in the worst coaching performance of all time. Replacing Solo with Scurry for the game was incredibly stupid, but using his last 2 subs for defensive players when down 3-0 in the second half was just mind boggling.
Brazil looked/showed to be the better team last night and the horrid second yellow call on Boxx was a huge blow, but that game should/would have been significantly closer had someone benched Greg Ryan prior to it.

Adam, Team USA would have lost that game regardless of the coaching decisions. 1-0 or 2-0 or 4-0: it's all the same a loss in the semis. Brazil was better - period. It is my hope that our flame throwing goalie gets a chance to go solo with Marta in China so we can see how well she does. She showed a real lack of class.

Gotta agree SMACK, Terry is definitely getting a free pass on that one. I suppose there has to be some advantage to being England captain!
I think you're right too LH, the calls made by the coach we're horrible but he didn't make the USA offense completely punchless. Solo should be benched for a good long while after throwing people under the bus like that. For her to say "I would make all those saves" is just arrogant.

Not only do I know who we should and should not pickup. I also know who the skins will pick up--regardless of whether they should have or not.
I find it irritating that folks reading posts are not smart enough to interpret them correctly.

RedCoat! I didn't mean to leave you hangin' - dang work!
Well, first let me address that McNabb comment - lol. I believe we beat the Eagles, not that they beat themselves. Their recievers were dropping balls because they were getting drilled. McNabb was being pressured at times and the effects were evident.
This now speaks to the philosophies I mentioned. To whit, the Redskins under Gibbs are designed to control a game through metered offensive success (let's not bring up execution here) and defense that stops scoring. Even with a small lead, as we saw against the Gints, the concept is to not give up the farm by taking chances.
I believe the Phins approach differs in two fundamental aspects. The offense is supposed to eat up a lot of yards fast (let's not bring up execution here... either! hehe) and score score score. The defense is meant to threaten, cause turnovers and chaos.
I do believe if Gibbs has any true success in the next two years, it will be an anomaly that may, but most likely may not, be attempted by future teams.
I also believe with the continued emphasis of individual performance and outclassing vs. team building and team play at the High School and College levels, not to mention leaving before 4 years, also contributes to a culture counter to Gibb's ideology.

LH - Brazil was the better team, but...
1st goal seemed a direct result of zero communication between goalie and field players; if goalie calls off defender, that's an easy save/catch. I'm putting that one squarely on Scurry and (by proxy) Ryan.
2nd goal was a great move by Marta (as well as so so defending) to get off a good shot, but the general rule of thumb is that goaltenders should not get beat from that angle on the near post. Not an easy save, but a very important one because...
If the US loses Boxx but goes into the half at 0-0, they could bunker down and play for pks/hope Brazil over commits to scoring and get a fortuitous counter attack to Wambach. Plus, it would have explained Ryan's sjking ridiculous 2nd half substitutions. Down 2-0 and having to chase 10v11, they were dead.
I feel Solo's comments were bad because they did dig a bit at Scurry and (ideally) they shouldn't have been aired in public. But I've got zero problem with her thinking she could have made the saves (to be honest, I'd be pretty pissed if she thought she couldn't make the saves; you want your goalie thinking they are a brick wall, regardless of how true/untrue that is) and she was 110% correct in her assessment of Greg Ryan.

Adam,
Thanks for your thoughts on the womens national team. I wholeheartedly concur. As for the Eagles against the Giants, I think the Giants 2nd half D was more to do with the 'skins not attacking with their strengths (running game) or against the Giants weaknesses (deep ball). There were obviously a few shots downfield but very seldomly were the receivers covered down field.
Posted by: bangkokben | September 28, 2007 12:19 PM
Ah, I see some ChickenSJK who won't post his ID is calling me out. Well, gutless wonder - let's look and see who DC can beat:
Lions - W
Pack - W
Cards - W
Pats - L
Jets - W
Iggles - L
Girlz - W
Bucs - L
Bills - W
Bears - W
Giants - W
Vikings - W
Girlz - W
Now I said - CAN, not necessarily will. But you never know - you really don't. No one had us beating the Eagles and we did, and we can again.
Now, if you want to play a game of what if, I can match you call by call. Pick a game & say why we're going to loose and I can explain why we're going to win.
Bottom line, you don't know until it happens.
So, If you're actually a skins fan who is just SJKing all over his own team - you need some anti-depressants. And if you're a fan of another team coming over here to compare DIK size, a) I got ya beat and b)if you're so confident we suk, why are you even here? You must be scared o' somethin... impotent weasel.

You're right about your game with the Eagles Dik, but I think it gave McNabb a wake-up call. He seemed to believe he could get well in his own time and could coast through games until then (the Packers loss was put on the punt returners not him).
When the Skins D stopped the run and roasted the receivers he couldn't do anything about it as he obviously wasn't mobile enough to either scramble until they could get open or even run himself on occasion. McNabb may only be an occasional scrambling QB now, but with 500lbs of metal on one leg he sure as heck scares no-one.
IMHO the biggest statement he made in that Lions game was that he took the brace off. That said "I'm back and I CAN beat you all on my own if I have to". Now the Lions D is NOT the Skins D, I grant you, but if THAT McNabb turns up in your second game you will have all the trouble you can handle. And I hate to think what he might do to us....
Interesting thoughts on the philosophies of the teams. I think you're just about bang-on with us, although our offense is supposed to be more balanced than it has been to date.
The funny thing is I think the Gibbs philosophy as you expound it IS high-risk. If you don't go for the kill when you're in front, ANY mistake could let the opposition back into the game. The timidity of the play-calling at the end of the second wquarter and in the second half (two-minute drill aside) was fundamental in allowing the Gints to build and maintain all the momentum in th egame. Only one team was trying to win, the other was just trying not to lose. Big difference.
I can't comment on college/HS football as I don't watch it (no interest) but if you're right and that is the emphasis it's going to be very hard to assemble Gibbs-type teams in the future.

The worst thing about Keyshawn is that he is as bad a presenter as he was good as a receiver. He should have played another year and got some serious coaching before embarrassing himself like that on TV.

RedC - I have absolutely NO idea how the NFL rates their fines. I understand you're not supposed to "disrespect the ball" (TO) but I don't see how it's the same as taking a player out w/ a cheap shot. And the fines are similar, it turns out.

I am starting to think of Gibbs 2.0 in similar terms as Jimmy Johnson 2.0 in Miami. HOF coaches who probably had the game pass them by in some way that I am too mentally deficient to comprehend.
I like Jimmy Johnson as an announcer, although he did predict Washington would "struggle" this year back in Week 2.

Posted by: bigfish | September 28, 2007 1:45 PM
You may be right about Johnson and Gibbs SC, but at least Gibbs 2.0 hasn't had a 'sacred cow' like Marino to deal with.
JJ built half a decent team here (defense) and wasn't allowed to tinker with the other half for fear of upsetting Danny too much. I'm a fully-fledged Marino-worshipper but even I think he might have been better off playing his last 5-10 years as a Viking or something. He may have won something too!!

Thanks for the link SC, "never knowing who to throw to, when the blitz came in" LMGO!
Bigfish, Brunoodlenell was Gibbs' self-created sacred cow, I guess that's even worse. From what I understand even Shula thought long and hard about getting rid of Danny but just couldn't bear to do it, and if the Don couldn't do it, no-one else was ever going to be allowed to.
Maybe that's the key. Gibbs 1.0 was loyal but unsentimental (he kicked Joey T. out once he knew he couldn't get back) but he's definitely lost that edge now.
Do the Redskins need the avuncular 2.0 Joe Gibbs today or the 1.0 guy who would NOT accept anything that stood between him and success?

I used to work for a guy who knows Marino well, and he said that although Marino cultivates a friendly "everyman" sort of image, he's actually extremely hard-nosed. When he's serious, he's deadly serious and doesn't suffer fools at all.
Only to be expected from guys who have performed at the highest levels I suppose.

"Don't see them taking a cvap hit on Lloyd now and might as well wait throught he end of the season"
k. What's a 'cvap'? Is that like 'kvetch'?
6. I thought that if Receiver, The gets cut right now his cap acceleration takes teh Skins over the cap which therefore makes that option impossible.
If 6. is correct, doesn't JLC know that or are we mistaken about the implications of cutting Retriever, The right now?
I'm just asking because if we're wrong on that, maybe he will get cut this year - at least that will cheer a few people up!!

I don't see much of a difference between Gibbs 1.0 and 2.0 myself (that may be the problem). It's people like Al Saunders, Dan Snyder and Vinny C that are thrown into the equation that make his 2nd run so much different than the first. That and the salary cap. Gibbs, JKC and Bethard could still field a Championship team these days IMO.

To jump in on the Wilfork, elbow, and subsequent fine issue. Goodell just set the standard for knocking a qb out for a bunch of games. What team is going to say to themselves, for 12-grand, its worth it to dive at Tom Brady's knees, and knock him out for a while.
