Monday Afternoon H-Back
Rantings from a printer-smashing lunatic:
27 rushes ain't going to get it done. 40 is the magic number, we're all in agreement on that up here on this blog, right? So when you have a 14 point lead against a division foe at the half, you don't rush the ball just 10 times in the second half, right? Betts and Portis should have clsoer to 21 carries each, than 21 carries combined, right, for a smashmouth NFC East team?
Betts and Portis combined for 6 carries in the second half - TOTAL - and both of Ladell's came on the final two offensive plays of the game. Wanna guess the first time in the entire second half when a RB got the ball handed off two straight times? Yep, Betts at the very end. The only prior time the entire half they even completed two straight runs was on their first drive of the fourth quarter, when Moss, a WR, went on the end around and then Portis got the ball. (they would have run two straight times on the next drive, but Campbell and Portis could not execute the hand-off on second down and the fumble cost them the possession.
They had to try to at least pound it 3 straight times at some point to keep the defense off the field, and never did. Yeah, it was tough sledding - 10 rushes for 17 yards in the second half as a team - but neither runner was ever given a remote opportunity to get in a rhythm. Some are saying the Skins were too conservative in the second half. Not me, I think the cutesy end around on first down after the Giants tied it at 17 sent the wrong message. Run Portis behind Samuels/Kendall 3 times and see what happens. You can't give up 14 first downs over a 24 minute stretch of the second half and not produce a single one on offense. without really playing to your strength.
And yeah, so then you find yourself down 24-17, but you have good field position with 5:32 to play (Washington 38) and 3 timeouts plus the two minute warning. What would you do? Try to finally establish the run a bit, or put it entirely in Campbell's hands?
Here's what they did:
1-10 WAS 38 - INC to Moss deep (good call, not a bad time to take a shot and JC overthrew it, a bad miss on his part)
2-10 WAS 38 - pass to Portis for 2 yards
3-8 WAS 40 - pass to Randle El for 12 (ARE was a stud again, more on him later)
1-10 NYG 48 INC to Randle El
2-10 NYG 48 pass to Betts for 13
1-10 NYG 35 INC (Sellers)
2-10 NYG 35 INC (deep to ARE)
3-10 NYG 35 SACK - gee, you don't think the Giants could tee-off now, eh, after 7 straight passes???)
PUNT
Now, somebody explain that me? Seems to me coaching had a whole lot to do with this choke job all around. And the firedrills at the end of halves are comical now. Let me get this straight, watching players run towards the sidelines and back four times at the end of the half, that's normal? Should the Hall of Famer on the sidelines have a tighter ship?
Riddle me this: Six days after they nearly blew it in Philly in the first half you spike the ball on first down at the goal line in order to get Pucillo and your jumbo package in the game, then throw on second down? Couldn't you throw on first down, and if incomplete then get you other personnel in there? Do you have to waste that down? The second-half adjustments - or lack there of - and weird coaching stuff never stops, and they continue to abandon the running game (anyone else have visions of the loses to Oakland and San Diego at home in 2005? Think I've seen this rodeo before back when Gibbs was calling the plays).
While we're talking about coaching/management, it seems to me something is awry when the wide receiver you gave $10 million guaranteed can't even get on the field in four-wide sets with the game on the line and you need big yards downfield, and when guys like James Thrash and Todd Yoder are deemed more helpful even in these critical situations, then just sit the WR. If nothing else, at least Lloyd has speed, but if you're not using him here, then don't dress him at all
That situation is a joke all the way around. Have Caldwell, who at least has some size and has made some plays, up and make No. 85 inactive, whether Caldwell is allegedly ready to help out on special teams or now. It's not like any WR on the roster other than Thrash is playing teams, and 85 surely ain't, so I'm not buying the rhetoric about Caldwell being inactive because of special teams.
So with the offense in desperation mode on the final drive, the franchise RB and a WR you just gave $10 million a few years ago aren't even on the field? Strange. Portis has been the only part of the offense actually getting in the end zone, but on the final two plays Betts gets his first carries since being dropped for a four-yard loss on third-and-1 from the New York 25, when 46 seconds remained in the first half?
Watch the Right Side of the O Line: Randy Thomas's absence is huge. Back in 2005 it took about 2 weeks before the running game stalled, and I wonder how long before DeMulling, who is more athletic than Fabini, gets his shot. Of their 23 scripted runs as a team Sunday (excluding JC's scrambles, 9 went to the right, including Randle El's end around). Those nine rushes produced 28 yards, and 5 of those runs were for two yards or less.
I don't blame them for going left on the final two plays of the game (though I was thinking at one run would be a QB keeper or maybe Sellers inside) - and they had success slicing that side of NY's defense early in the game - but I think a lot of the tackle eligible stuff that used to be so effective on sweeps and outside zone plays have now been switched to the left with Randy and Jansen out, and they'll have a hard time being as balanced with the run now.
Carlos Rogers - Is he really anything other than an average corner with above average skills? I'm willing to give him more time, but we shall soon find out, 'cause he's going to be getting attacked. I actually thought the Skins would win this game with ease - something I based to large extent on Burress not practicing all week and me thinking he'd be limited at best - and figured they'd stumble against Arizona and Detroit, because of what those teams can do through the air.
So now you're talking about facing some huge WRs out of the bye - Johnson/Williams, even that Furrey dude makes plays for the Lions -then going to Green Bay, where Favre and Driver are killing people, and then facing the best WR tandem in the NFL with the Cards (Boldin/Fitzgerald), and then going to Foxboro for the 38-point-per game Pats. Down the road there's two meetings with Dallas - the best offense in the NFC - and somehow I doubt the Eagles will take so few deep shots at the Skins the second time around in November
So trust me, a month from now we're going to know plenty about Carlos and just how improved this secondary is. The problems with tight ends and big WRs going off on 20-30 yard routes from the slot reappeared. It was a killer last year in the Cover-2, and the Skins ended up playing a lot of that Sunday as well (early in the game Landry was playing centerfield a bunch in the Cover-1, and seemed okay, which is a nice idea to get Taylor active near the line. 'Cause Grim Reaper wasn't getting much action in centerfield, and his INT yesterday was a gimme. Still waiting for some big plays from him.
Going back to last season the Redskins have yielded 32 TD passes to just 8 INTs. Over the last 19 games only one player - Reaper - has more than one pick for them (he has 2). The Redskins had not had two INTs in a game since Nov. 26 of last season.
JC was not OK. A lot of guys were bashing him on my webchat the other day and I was kind of stunned. If you want to be hard on him, now's the time, but people were jumping the gun before. He still sails too many balls and his intermediate stuff - save for some crossing routes - is generally erratic. The fumbles have to be a concern. He got away with a couple of poor throws that could have been picked. He has trouble throwing left and I'm not sure why they roll him left, 'cause that seems real problematic right now.
Bottom line, he looked his age, and that's no surprise, not in the least. If he hits the second deep ball to Santana (and you're not going to see a better catch than the one Moss made on that 49-yard bomb in the first half) and he's 5-5 as a starter and getting more praise. But in reality he still has a ways to go and there are going to be some days like there were he completes less than half his attempts and doesn't have it for stretches of the game. But they were in it 'til the end and they're still dropping too many balls as well.
He's going to be very good, but not on every single Sunday. It doesn't work that way.
ARE is a gamer. Got to give him his props again. Dude plays way bigger than he is. His punt return on the last drive and fearless dive to catch that high ball down to the 1 would have been remembered for a long, long time ... had the Skins found a way to get the longest yard.
Derrick Frost is getting off. He's playing big in a contract year, folks. Was booming the ball again yesterday.
Antonio Pierce lives to play the Redskins. He has their number and he has a mojo. Has a way of snuffing out the running game and anticipating where the ball is going. No surprise he comes up with that big fumble recovery
And, last but not least: "We're all in it together," in case you weren't certain of that. (PS - missed that riveting Dan Snyder interview. Let me guess the synopsis - He's disappointed by last year's 5-11 record but has faith in Coach Joe and thinks the future's bright? And, why would they ever mess wit their front office structure, right? Did Golf Cart George throw him any fastballs with the questions?)

How Bout them Cowboys
Posted by: Anonymous | September 24, 2007 12:56 PM
Screw the Cowboys.
JLC, great stuff. I agree 100% on everything. Why Portis wasnt in the game, along with the WR, befuddles me and prolly will all season. Just put him on the practice squad and have someone else dress. Its kinda ridic how this coaching staff picks up on a player every year they hate and pretty much embarass him and make all of skins fans angry as well.

Brutal post...but true stuff.
Skins starting to look like posers once again.
Gibbs has gotta be the worst game day coach in the NFL (for the last several years).
Posted by: GAD | September 24, 2007 1:02 PM
(1) Why do these games still surprise fans ? Strip the numbers off the jerseys and these games look the same for the past 15 years. This organization has bred a culture of losing. It does not matter which coach, which players, which venue - the end result has been the same. LOSING. Finding new ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. This game could have been played under Norv Turner, Marty, Spurrier or Gibbs - same plays, same script, same result. The Giants are a dog and the Skins had every opportunity to beat them down and did not. But the players and coaches will gladly collect checks tomorrow for a farce. How many coaches really need to be reminded to play their best players when it counts ? Portis is one of the most physical backs in the NFL and he is watching the team lose on a goal-line stand they must have. Where was the vaunted 3rd down defense against a very pedestrian QB ? Rather than pass, why not run Portis, Betts, Carwright and Sellers at the Giants until they collapse ? Then look to open routes off play action ? Where are the angry and sullen players and where are the leaders on the sidelines ? I am a born and bred DC area native who has followed this team for decades. No more. I just turned down season tickets. I will not give Snyder and his organization the benefit of my hard earned dollars so that I can watch and feel this fiasco in person. Time to pack away the fan gear and watch SportsCenter. As they have famously said "Game over. Good night. Drive safely." We've seen this before over and over and over and over again. Insanity is doing the same thing expecting a different result. No more. So it's good night, season over, drive safely. I never thought I would see the day that the Skins are consistently outplayed and outcoached by the worst teams in the league. We have reached the level of the "Aints" and "Bungles."
(2) For all the postings which are pleading to show some hope, the point is being missed. If the loss today was out of the ordinary, then there can be some optimism for the season. However, this organization just continues the same trend season to season. They need an intervention of epic proportion. The Skins barely beat a horrible 0-3 Miami team at home and caught the Eagles on a bad night. The Eagles regrouped and opened a can against the Lions. Teams don't fear the Skins on the road or at home. The Giants have used them as a doormat for years. Now when the opportunity comes to return the favor the Skins are AWOL. Mentally and physically. Shameful. Despite losing today, Detroit - mind you, the Lions - racked up hundreds of yards of offense against the Eagles. The Skins used to beat the Lions without mercy adn owned them. Now, get ready for the Lions to torch the Skins - another loss. The Cardinals gave Baltimore all they could handle with a defense far better than the Skins. Chalk up another loss to a lesser team. And that;s not even considering the teams that are far better than the Skins at the moment - NE, Dallas, GB. Even teams like the Jets and Vikings will mount a challenge to the Skins not becuase of parity but because this team is afflicted with an underachieving mentality that has festered the last 15 years. Every season, the schedule is loaded with teams that the Skins should beat but they find ways to lose. Show me a season where this has not happened in the last 15 years. You can't. And despite the delusional thinking that things will be different, the evidence is right before you that things are just the same. THe columnists will just add a new date to a previous column and the press clippings from the team will be the same inane fodder that spews from an organization buried under the weight of futility.
(3) There is NO EXCUSE for losing at home to a division rival which was ranked 28th in total defense and 0-2 coming into the game. This was a chance to bury a dog team in disarray. Yes, teams do have off games - case in point, Philly. But they rebound (just ask the Lions about how it feels this morning)and do not repeat the same mistakes over and over and over again. The Skins did not lose the game due to flukes or extenuating circumstances - they lost because that is their culture. Players, coaches, owner. Miami, another 0-3 club, took the team into overtime at home. And Philly slept throgh their game - classic trap game for them and Andy Reid righted that ship.
Ever notice how other teams manage to change successfully ? Pittsburgh replaces Cowher with a young and untested Dungy disciple in Mike Tomlin and the team thrives. Years ago the Eagles stopped the culture of losing and brought in Andy Reid, an obscure QB coach at GB. NO hired Sean Payton and despite their woes this season he has made substantial changes in bringing a culture of success and winning. The Niners hire Mike Nolan, a former Skins coach, and he is turning that team around. Marvin Lewis, another former Skins coach, has transformed the Bengals from a joke to a playoff contender.
Keep telling yourself that because the team is 2-1 that good things are happening. You are blind to what is unraveling in front of your eyes. You cannot rationalize it away despite your hurculean efforts. The same patterns of behavior are in place. With time, Jason Campbell will be an excellent QB. That is not the issue. The issues are much larger and infect the entire team. Heart, desire, motivation, courage, passion, execution, yearning for excellence and pride, "manning up." All lacking in addition to the foul game-planning and play-calling. You can't refute history and current facts with pining away for hope.

The secondary is not improved. It just isn't.
Posted by: Wes Mantooth | September 24, 2007 1:04 PM
I agree with everything. I'm concerned with how they will respond to this out of the bye week. That will tell us whether we are looking at a contender or a pretender. The veteran leadership needs to step up. This is a good team and a season needs not to be wasted on "could haves."
Posted by: sicwidit | September 24, 2007 1:04 PM
Cowboys look pretty good, I must admit. But their D is a cause for concern. The only offense they have really stopped is the laughable Chicago offense. They outscored Miami and New York, but Miami moved the ball against them effectively and New York torched them.
Whoever is responsible for Betts being on the field instead of Portis at the end, unless Portis was injured or something, should be fired. I don't care if it was Byner or who. Betts is AVERAGE! Our O-line, when healthy, is dominant and that is why Betts puts up above average numbers when he gets the carries. Anyone who thinks he's a better power back between the tackles than Portis does not know much about football.

I have said it many times....but Gibbs should hire Russ Grimm next year while he still has power, go be president of the team...jettison GG and weird Al...
That would be true Gibbs 2.0: Russ Grimm

Well as usual, I agree with everything sween says. I also agree with the scouts inc. article someone posted about needing to take the handcuffs off Campbell. We have had plenty of time to learn the offense good enough to open it up more. Campbell is the real deal if they would just let him play and stop worrying about making mistakes. Our first two games JC made three mistakes and we still won them(2 in the 1st game and 1 in the 2nd) . Yesterday he didn't but we got conservative trying not to make mistakes and lost that way. We were conservative until we couldn't be anymore, then Campbell took us down the field. Yeah, he made a couple of high throws, but he completed the 4th down passes with the pressure on even more. He is capable of doing it if we let him. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd rather lose taking our shots than to be conservative and still lose, I mean, the iggles almost came back on us like yesterday (but no one talked about it cuz we still won).

Disgusted, again, I say, go root for another team. Take your whine and cheese somewhere else. You gave a laundry list of team's that are according to you better than the Skins, so go root for one of them, and quit your b*tching.

The secondary is improved. You'd have to be a fool to say otherwise. Last year Carlos was the No.1 corner for much of the year with Springs out and the Reaper was paired with Archuleta. Springs, Rogers, Taylor, and Landry are significantly better. They aren't at 2005 levels. At least not yet. But they are clearly improved.
You cannot blame this game on the D. They got 3 turnovers (the Taylor interception was a gimme because the D line got great pressure) including two short fields. Culprit No. 1 was offensive playcalling in the second half (not enough running the ball and not enough attempts at a kill shot) and Culprit No. 2 was just poor execution by the offensive players.
I disagree with some of the criticism of Campbell. He is a young QB, but he is clearly a clutch performer and is unfazed mistakes by his o-line. I'm going to watch the TIVO tonight, but I would be shocked if it was his call to spike the ball. I'm going to bet Gibbs and Bugel were showing him the spike signal.
Posted by: Mike H. | September 24, 2007 1:12 PM
My Three Things:
1) Saunders is not calling the plays.
2) The defense is overrated and still significantly flawed.
3) Portis must be on the field at the end of the game.

Take the handcuffs off Campbell? What on earth are you talking about?
Didn't you read what Jason wrote above? Seven consecutive passes, of which he missed the two deep passes. Look at the dude's statistics: 44/84 for the year, 2 TDs and 3 INTs. A qb rating of 69.6. The man needs to play better before we can rely on him to win games for us.

It always cracks me up when sports journalists think they know football.
The 40+ run rule is a RESULT of winning, it doesn't CAUSE the win.
You get to run 40+ times in a win because the run is working, and you are winning.
The run wasn't working for the Skins. You can't run the ball 40+ times for 1 yard and expect to win just because you ran it 40 times. That is the worst logic ever, but expected from a beat writer who doesn't know football.
It doesn't work that way. That rule makes sense because most the time TEAMS WHO ARE WINNING RUN A BUNCH IN THE 4TH QUARTER.
Unfortunately for the Skins, the run was going nowhere.
Sports journalists aren't even qualified to cover high school football games.

I am glad to hear your JLC's comments about the lack of running game in the second half. Absolutely agree that the end around is not what this NFC battle demanded. It's been clear to me that when we run the ball and stick with the run, good things happen. It was true in Gibbs I and it's been true in Gibbs II. Playing with a lead, run on first and second with Portis to the strength of your line. If they stop us, fine, but let's give them our best shot. Let's run time off the clock and take pressure off of our young QB. The coaching staff put entirely too much pressure on Campbell, not to mention our D, by not continuing to pound the Giants. What a debacle!

Jason, did you get a new printer? I have been waiting all weekend to find out what you decided to purchase. My preference is Canon, but the ink can be pricey.
Maybe this has been asked before, but would it have been that hard to run a play, any play at the goal line on first down when the Giants were catching their breath instead of telegraphing a spike into the turf? Seriously, how bad could the outcome have been?
Posted by: CheekyMonkey | September 24, 2007 1:19 PM

I think it was Wynn or Daniels last season who said something like "Its never as bad or as good as it looks." Yesterday was a much closer game than it feels like now ... and Miami was WAY closer than we remember it. [I enjoyed the Philly game too much to remember if it was really as good as it looked ... whiskey may have been involved.]
Yesterday, nine games were decided by one scoring opportunity. Of those, four by a field goal. I don't want to start talking loser-talk, because I still think the Skins are on the plus side of the bell curve, but I only see teams on the far ends of the curve -- New England and Buffalo (coming soon, the Toronto Bills!).
Sure would be good if the Skins could do a mid-season trade for a healthy (and dependable) WR and/or CB. Feels like the rest of the season is going to be decided by one score ... just feels like the rest of the Skins games are not really going to feel like they're over until the final seconds of the game (like yesterday).
That said, it does feel better to feel like the team is competitive (as opposed to, say, having Brunell as the starter). Only thirteen more games of needing to avoid serious injuries. Woo hoo!
Posted by: dcsween | September 24, 2007 1:22 PM
Hire Ron Meeks. Defensive coordinator for the Colts, Dungy school of coaching, and former secondary coach for the Skins. Find a sound offensive mind who can run a true "West Coast" offense - power running complemented by passes that strech the defense.
Seems the Skins years ago found an unknown coach named Joe Gibbs and resurrected a franchise. Time to repeat history.

Any news on a Portis or Moss injury? I agree sween, but my nerves can't handle the nail biters every week!lol
Posted by: RockyTopSkin | September 24, 2007 1:25 PM
Lets face it,we are trouble this year. Our offense was fine in 2005 but no....we had to change it for a big name coordinator and now we can't even score on the 1 yard line with three attempts at it. Our starting corner can't tackle while the other plays with a chip on his shoulder becuase he almost got traded or cut. The fact is folks this team is a pretender. Whatever they have tried to do and thye have tried, isn't working. If this team was a contender, they won't have let an 0-2 team the worst defense in the league walk all over them and allow them to make smart adjustments. You have to finish games off in this league and capitalize on turnovers and broken moral....this team didn't. Even in Joe Gibbs press conference yesterday he even said he doesn't expect this team to "dominate " games. C'mon, isn't that what you want to do every week.
Thats what Belichick preaches to his team, just don't beat them...destroy them. Joe I love you and you deserve your Hall of Fame honour but you need to adapt to the new millenium style of football...destroy and finish youor opponent and exploit their weaknesses; something you didn't do yesterday. The Giants were 32nd...yes 32nd in the league against the pass and you chose to run it when you couldn't run the ball at all in the second half. I hope Joe and this team have learned something.
Posted by: Jeff | September 24, 2007 1:26 PM
As for JLC's analysis that the 'Skins should run 40 times a game, smart teams exploit what the defense gives them. Chicago was stuffing the 'Boys run attack, so they passed like crazy in the second half.
If the Gints have 8 men in the box, is Soups supposed to NOT audible out to a pass? Ludicrous.
There is no magic rushing/passing ratio, JLC.

A couple of things:
-HP Printers do in fact suck, but I can tell you that without question Lexmark are a million times worse. In fact, I recently swapped out my 7 year-old HP and trashed my Lexmark PSC, which was only 18 months old.
-With regard to the right side of the line, am I the only one who noticed that we had Cooley on the right side matched up ONE-ON-ONE with Strahan? Textbook definition of the term "Mismatch". I dunno wtf the coaches were thinking putting Cooley in that position- he's an excellent pass catcher, but blocking- especially in pass protection- is hardly his strength, and putting him on an island against a first-ballot Hall-Of-Famer is beyond bizzare.
Posted by: Dallassucks17 | September 24, 2007 1:29 PM
The Boys passed more in the second half and then came back to a crushing rushing offense that had attitude - they wanted to hurt the Bears. They were knocking heads with LBs and safeties.

Other highlight of yesterday's game ... the Harley Davidson Washington Redskins Cheerleaders! Great quarter squad captaining by my fave, LeAnne.
Also, I don't want Cowher to be the Skins coach. I'm thinking that 4 out of 5 of the posts calling for hiring Cowher as head coach are by The Owner himself (i.e., focus group marketing). Splashy and fashionable? Sure. Screw that. Too much risk in relying on someone who remembers how HE supposedly won a Super Bowl.
The next head coach should be some guy in his mid-30s with no kids and no life outside of football. Some zen master who happens to enjoy sleeping on the couch in his office. Maybe one of Buddy Ryan's boys. [I think one is a coordinator in Baltimore (?) and the other one maybe in Oakland (?).]

Why does everyone bash the Skins when they win saying it won't last? Why does everyone bash when the Skins when they loose, saying i told you so?
As much as I like the information Jason give us, I hate all the rocks that are thrown no matter how the Skins do. In my opinion, a TRUE Skins fan would root the Skins on, no matter how good or bad they are doing.
As for the Cowboys fans.... You SUCK! However, the Philly fans are worse.

Your longest post in a while. I guess you've been waiting to unload like that for a few weeks. You make some good points, but your tone certainly doesn't help dissuade the anti-JLC crew.
Also, I'm glad you deemed that Snyder interview not worth covering without even watching it. Who needs "all-access", when we have such worthy filters as yourself. Seriously, who cares if it's an inflated PR-piece; you can sometimes read between the lines on those things. And as a journalist, I can't imagine you favoring no access to information over access to controlled information.

I'm sorry, but it wasn't the drive with 7 passes in a row that lost the Skins the ballgame. By then it was already way too late to attempt to "establish the running game." Hell, that drive gave the Redskins their 1st first down of the 2nd half.
What killed the Redskins yesterday was their obvious play calling on their previous 4 drives... you know, the ones that resulted in 0 first downs. A ten-year-old could have guessed what they were going to do.

I agree, Gibbs need to step down. Please Joe..... Either Cowher or Grimm
Posted by: realist | September 24, 2007 1:34 PM
I think we saw the true Skins yesterday, same ole story. I was there & it was worse in person than on TV. They looked like an unorganized HS team, they got way too conservative in the 2nd half, & once again they blew a very winnable game. I am through kidding myself. They are 8-8 if they are lucky & until little danny stops playing GM they won't be any good. I hate to say it but I also think they need to take a hard look at Gibbs too. I think he has lost his edge, the game has semi past him by. What's more , he has got to start letting the O coordinator make the calls or fire him.

Because the fan base has been taken advantage of. The total disarray of the team does not create any trust that the wins can continue and to expect the worst. Losing, especially in demoralizing ways, breeds more of the same. And then being fed platitudes just adds insult to injury.

WOW, talk about piling on.
I find it funny that after the Eagles game on Monday night there was no Tuesday recap of the game on this blog, simply the names of some O-Lineman they were bringing in to replace Thomas. Maybe b/c JLC picked the Eagles to win.
Now they lose their first game and we get the longest blog post of the season ripping every facet of the coaching staff and team. I don't want you to love the Skins, but do you have to jump on them every time something goes wrong?

One of the reasons Gibbs handed over the offense to Saunders was to be able to focus on game management, no? Wasn't that one of the things that was said when Saunders was hired? So what does it say when we continue to show the worst game management in critical situations in the entire league? We already know Joe called the last couple plays, but I bet you The Receiver's bonus it extends far beyond that.
Joe Gibbs has neutered Al Saunders.

Interesting macro points, Jeff, but the head coach alone doesn't make or break the season. The season also involves a roster of guys whose day job is to play football professionally and personally. Some big egos on the Skins roster, which could translate into real December leadership ... or a pity party.
The farthest I could go to join your reasoning would be something like "let's face it, we are in trouble next week." After yesterday, I'm on the chRIs Larry bandwagon of "F season predictions."
Also, I don't think we are in trouble next week ... I'm thinking we kick the crap out of the Bye Week. After next Sunday, I'll be ready to talk about the Lions game.

JLaC,
Ordinarily I'd be right there with you on running the ball 40 times and pounding it. But the achilles heel of the Giants is the passing game and I think that showed. The thing that killed them in the 2nd half was that drive where JC and Moss were running different playbooks. More mis-communication. And speaking of playbooks, sure Al didn't pull out the Brunell version for the 2nd half? Even if he was hurt I would have put Portis in for those last 3 plays just to put it in the Giants mind that he would get the ball. The would allow JC to play-action and maybe spot Cooley (who spent much of the 2nd half in protection!) in the end zone.
BTW, Loved the HP story. Great! Just great! Keep up the good work.

Posted by: Ghost of Jack Kent Cooke | September 24, 2007 1:42 PM
Jeff,
To re-hash points already made:
1) League stats don't mean anything when you're only 2 weeks into a season;
2) You may be right about the coaches - I think too many coaches are on staff, but others have addressed this;
3) Most teams in the NFL aren't dominant. If you expected the Redskins to turn into a dominant team based on what happened last year or early this year, then you were fooling yourself.
You mentioned Belichick in your post. Belichick also probably preaches "Don't just beat them...destroy them using this tape that decoded all their defensive signals and calls." Sorry - just trying to add some levity.
Finally, I'm beginning to suspect that DisgruntledFan is a troll. Ignoring him might be the best course of action from now on. It would take someone truly insane to waste time posting on a Redskins message board who actually feels the way he says he feels.
Posted by: jcabana | September 24, 2007 1:43 PM
Have the courage to look at the situation clearly and succintly - the team is in a continuing negative posture that dates back 15 years ago so address it and drive change. Teams in worse shape have been transformed. And as a fan, there is no excuse for accepting this situation.
Posted by: DisgustedFan | September 24, 2007 1:44 PM
Ghost of JKC, I don't see anything that happened since the end of last season looking like The Owner has been playing mini-GM. Seems like all the moves look kind of understated and conservative ... like the Team President might actually be making the football decisions. [Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of The Owner, but that particular gripe sounds a little outdated right now.]
Posted by: dcsween | September 24, 2007 1:45 PM
Dominant??? They couldn't put away a team that was 0-2, had lost their starting RB, had a QB with a bum shoulder, & a D that was scored on at will by 2 other teams.... dominant? They look pathetic....
Posted by: Ghost of Jack Kent Cooke | September 24, 2007 1:45 PM
Ah, young Jason. Now I see that you are the "26-year old reporter who doesn't know anything" that the Danny referred to in his interview.
Here's the thing, kid: Paraphrasing Bill Clinton, "It's the offense, stupid". The offense failed to give the defense any time to breathe in the second half. Why? 40% of the starting O-line -- Pro Bowl-caliber guys -- are essentially out for the season. Portis dropped both a simple handoff and a 3rd-down pass when we really needed him. The young but improving QB was indecisive in critical moments. Sure, it's hard to be tough on a kid who got us a yard from overtime, but the fact is his growing pains are the biggest reason the second half fell apart. While I was not fond of the play calling from the 1, I also recognize I am only a fan. On my best day I can't measure myself against any NFL coach (not even Norv!).
Observe, comment, even criticize (with dignity and respect) if you must. But please don't presume for even the briefest instant that anything you think now or anytime in the future will measure up to the most mundane thought Joe Gibbs has ever had. I mean, after a game like that the best you can offer is "where was Lloyd"? Your ranting today ranks up there with the incompetent Brian Mitchell, who is as much a team cancer on TV as he was in the locker room. Maybe we can send you both to Philly where you belong.
I've read my last Redskins Insider. You're not a bad writer, but the clear conflict between reporting and blogging has a corrosive effect on your integrity and reputation. Your malice and obvious bias while doing the latter has simply gotten out of hand and destroyed the credibility that any true reporter would strive for.

Posted by: Ghost of Jack Kent Cooke | September 24, 2007 1:51 PM
It's obvious there are a lot of things to *like* out there. The problem is simply that they lost a game in a fashion that we have become all too familiar with the last three (or fifteen) years. 2-0 gave us hope that they had moved beyond that. They clearly have not, and it's particularly ranklesome to the fanbase.
Posted by: Wes Mantooth | September 24, 2007 1:51 PM
Jason:
Nice analysis. So much for the "the offense was too conservative" argument. Why the shot at Dan at the end? It's giving ammo to those who say you are a bitter little man.

I think everyone should freely express his/her opinion on here without being told to go somewhere else. I respect everyones opionion from the optimist to the realist, everyone always has an intresting view on a subject whether I agree with it or not. I don't agree with everything DisgustedFan has to say but I do say I can agree with 65% of what was posted. Until the Redskins get a real front office, this team will be the laughing stock of the NFL. Gibbs as great of coach he is, is not a GM. I really do not want to bash Joe Gibbs, nor am I blaming him for the losing that has occured during his return thus far, but even Gibbs will say "It starts with someone", usually that is followed up by, "And it starts with me", I don't believe that, and deep down I think Gibbs dosen't believe it either. Dan Snyder was a genius for bringing back Joe J. Gibbs. He knew if the team faltered he didn't have to worry about fans calling for the coach's job, it's Joe Gibbs. He knew if he was to kinda indirectly suggest that Joe Gibbs is in charge of player personnel and calling plays, and have Joe Gibbs week in and week out take blame for loss after loss, he could just sit back and watch the money roll in while a 66 year old man is suffering mentally and emotionally. You wanna blame someone, blame freakin' Dan Snyder, I really don't know how he is/was forgotten in all of this. He is the worse. WashPo had a survey of if you could who would you bring back to the skins. I don't remember all of the choices but the three I do remember were: 1)LaVar Arrington 2)Champ Bailey 3)The Cook Family. Make mine the Cook's. Yeah the Skins were bad six years before Dan Dan showed up but were coached by Norv Turner. I think all of the grief and fustrations can be traced to Snyder. He fires Schottenheimer after one season, brings in Spurrier -FLOP, and finally not because of childhood idolization but as pawn, front man if you will. Kinda like that guy in Casino who signed all the documents giving people loans (Ah, The Teamsters. Isn't that what Jimmy Hoffa did too?) but took all his Q's from the mob. Gibbs is out there taking blame for player personnel moves, a percentage should be placed on Gibbs as well, but Snyder knew Gibbs was probably not the best fit for this team -right now.

Jason/JLa,
I must compliment you on this post. I think it was an excellent breakdown of the game. Let it not be said that I never say anything good about you.
For those of you who don't agree with him about the run/pass ratio: sometimes, all a team has to do to win is run straight up the middle for no gain every down. I know it seems odd, but it's true.
At the same time, I do find this point made earlier to be interesting:
"I find it funny that after the Eagles game on Monday night there was no Tuesday recap of the game on this blog, simply the names of some O-Lineman they were bringing in to replace Thomas. Maybe b/c JLC picked the Eagles to win.

Yes...very interesting indeed. I wouldn't go so far as to say you ripped EVERY facet of the coaching staff and team, but you must confess it's an interesting contrast.

Way to go Jasno, nice post. Being there in the stands and slowly watching our lead dwindle until it was all but lost, I kept asking myself why we weren't running the ball... and why oh why the SJK couldn't we stop the gints on 3rd and longs?
What topped everything was trying to flee FedEx, my car was stopped for about 45 minutes in the parking lot right next to a Giants post game tail gate. Salt in an open wound brothers and sisters.
I am 0-3 at Fed Ex field and 6-0 at RFK for the Nats and the United. Maybe I should go to more Nats games and stick to watching the Skins on the couch.

The ONLY good part about paying $100 for a tix to see that mess right now is the bimbo cheerleaders. Which one is the future Mrs Cooley? I was curious which one will be divoring him a few years & taking half of that bonus he just got.
Posted by: Ghost of Jack Kent Cooke | September 24, 2007 1:55 PM
My rebutal to dcsween and jcabana.
Lets face it guys the coaches call the play. The team executes the play. If you were coaching the Skins yesterday on a 1st and goal, would you have run to the left side twice knowing that you didn't run the ball effectively in the second half and knowing that the giants are going to go after the left side because it is obvious that was where we were running all day.
2 games into the season is early for stats , I agree but if a team has given up 80 points in two games and sucks in the secondary; wouldn't you expose that? I don't expect the Skins to dominate every game but the should dominate an 0-2 opponent at home up 17-3 at the half. You can say what you want about Belichick but he is the master of modern day football. Listen I want the Skins to have a great year because I don't see Joe sticking around if they don't make the playoffs. The offense was fine in 2005, we did we tweek it; ITS NOT WORKING!
Posted by: Jeff | September 24, 2007 1:56 PM
J Campbell isn't the answer either. He makes me think Jay S when I watch him , but even more unsure.
Posted by: Ghost of Jack Kent Cooke | September 24, 2007 1:58 PM
Yeah, you can't run 40 times in the second half if you only get 4 possessions. The defense couldn't get off the field; these things work hand in hand... None of this is new: Campbell didn't play any differently than he did the first 2 games; the Giants just didn't catch his picks. If McNabb could get some accuracy last week, they would've lost that one, too. This team is what it is...

Kudos to SkinsRealist for the respectful posting.
What many are missing here is that I have been a fan for four decades of this team and have been a diehard supporter until I reached my disgust threshold last season in the opening game. I don't switch teams, I don't root for winners, I'm not a "termite." I endured years of abuse as a Skins fan in Philly and never wavered. But at some point, as a fan you need to take a critical view and decide how best to support the team. For me, that means not buying merchandise or tickets and denying the team that small token income, watching the scores and highlight (or lowlight) on ESPN and cable on-demand but also not rooting against the team or for another team. I am dismayed that too many fans line up and check their common sense at the stadium - YOU as fans drive the success of the team and should be outraged that the organization is so contemptuous of your support.

LAVAR ARRINGTON SPEAKS:
The Sideline is scheduled to open in December and it sits practically in the shadow of FedEx Field, where Arrington played six seasons and became the face of the Redskins' franchise.
Instead of sitting in on daily linebacker meetings, Arrington now huddles with marketing, financial, architectural and culinary advisers about his 7,500 square-foot restaurant, which will feature a bar that sits inside a towering makeshift football and a VIP lounge that hovers above the restaurant floor like a press box.
"I am so at peace with my life," says Arrington, who had just bought his motorcycle days before the accident and was issued two citations by police for not having a motorcycle license and for the crash itself. "I don't feel lost, I don't feel any depression. I feel great. Me and my wife, we have a fire pit on our deck outside of our master bedroom and we have been sitting out there at night roasting marshmallows."
Arrington gets all soft and mushy when talking about retirement and the Giants, who released him in February. Unlike Tiki Barber, Arrington is a Tom Coughlin fan.
"Coughlin took care of me, man," says Arrington, who signed a seven-year, $49 million pact with the Giants as a free agent in 2006. "I am not supporting Coughlin over Tiki and I am not supporting Tiki over Coughlin. They took care of me. Ownership, management, I wish them all the best because they are a class act."
Arrington does not say the same about Daniel Snyder, the Redskins owner who drafted him second overall in 2000. After making the Pro Bowl from 2001 to 2003 and signing an eight-year, $68 million extension with the Redskins near the end of the 2003 season, Arrington clashed with Snyder over a nasty financial dispute. The linebacker and his agent claimed that he was shortchanged $6.5 million of the extension.
Arrington, who suffered a knee injury that required surgeries in 2004 and 2005, fell out of favor with Joe Gibbs' coaching staff and was labeled a freelancer who didn't fit in defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' scheme.
"I hate the way that Dan Snyder and Joe Gibbs handled things," says Arrington, who settled his dispute with Snyder and surrendered $2 million to get out of his contract in 2006. "So I don't have a liking for them particularly. I made three Pro Bowls under crazy circumstances. People wouldn't even know how complicated it is to be a Washington Redskin. I am not a mudslinger so I won't get into details of it."
Arrington credits Snyder - who once called his franchise linebacker "a Redskin through and through" -- with teaching him how to become a shrewd businessman.
"I will be a successful businessman based on probably 85% of the things I have learned from Daniel Snyder," says Arrington, who is starting a clothing line with Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis and former University of Miami linebacker Rohan Marley and is doing analysis for a local network. "It appears that (the Redskins) pay more money (than other teams). Dan Snyder is brilliant in that he knows how to backload, he knows that if he wants to pay, he has at least two to three years to decide if he really wants to pay you what your contract is (worth). Or he will restructure you and guarantee you more money and you will get some, but it is not what people think it is.
"Watch what they will do," Arrington continues. "They will get rid of (running back) Clinton (Portis) before they have to pay him his crazy amount of money. They will get rid of (offensive lineman) Chris Samuels. That is how they do business. Or they restructure you."
Still, Arrington's logo for his restaurant is painted in the Redskins' burgundy and gold. He loves the franchise and is still beloved here by its rabid fans. Dozens of shoppers wished Arrington a speedy recovery while he was standing outside his restaurant in an outdoor mall located where the old Capital Centre used to stand.
With designs on a charity initiative called "Grand Destiny" that will house 100 foster children from the area, the man once labeled the next Lawrence Taylor has no problem moving on from a seven-year career that fizzled due to injuries and ended with him limping off the Texas Stadium turf last year. After escaping his crash with just a couple of broken bones, Arrington wants to focus on mending the lives of the needy now.
"Probably the reason why things didn't pan out the way I would have liked them to is because I was more than an NFL player to begin with," Arrington says of his charities and business aspirations and his life now. "I'm busy, bro. Make a tackle, eh, that's cool. You'll make a million. Run fast, eh, that's cool, make a million.

Gossip: Shaq's wife fell for Cuban personal trainer
We've heard some juicy new info on why Shaquille O'Neill so abruptly filed for divorce. Shaq,35, says he found out his wife Shaunie Nelson, 32, had been hiding money and investments. But the financial shenanigans weren't the ONLY reason Shaq called the marriage off. According to our source, Shaunie has been having a raging affair with one of Shaq's personal trainers - described as "a muscular Cuban." When Shaunie fell for this guy she started stashing money away and went so far as to put a secret down payment on a HOUSE that she plans to share with the Cuban! Shaq's team Miami Heat pays him 20 million a year so he's not suffering much, and remember, Shaq originally stole Shaunie from his BEST FRIEND so maybe it's a case of just desserts. -- Janet Charlton's Hollywood Gossip

i for one think we were too conservative...but by that i dont mean we shouldnt have run the ball more...youre spot on with that...especially in the second half...what i mean is we need to stretch the field when they do pass...too much intermediate stuff...we need to get back to old school skins smashmouth football and big passing plays...pound the rock and stretch the field...stretch the field and pound the rock...we need to be throwing those 20-30 yard routes that are killing us on the other side of the ball...pound the rock...and more shots down field...oh and pound the rock!!!!
stretching the field opens up the run and the intermediate stuff...its hard to get the running game going when you only go 10 yards deep with passes...
the weakest secondary in the league and we didnt take advantage of that often enough...stretch the field and pound the rock!!!

While I appreciate Jason and his work on this blog, today's post was chock full of piss and vinegar for the team. If you just read today's post you'd swear that we hadn't won a single game yet. Seemed to be a little too angry and too critical if you ask me.
We're 2-1 right?

DisgustedFan,
THAT I can totally agree with. Maybe you're a real fan after all. If so, please accept my apologies.
What you just described in your last post is tough love. Shouting at a group of hardcore fans about how you've abandoned the team and how they've never amounted to anything in over a decade? That's not tough love. That's just obvious -- and kind of rude to boot. We all know about the negative front office issues, and I'd still rather be a Redskins fan than, say, an Orioles fan.
I agree: if fans hit Snyder in the pocketbook, he would have real incentive to turn the team around. Until he does, he'll keep making marketing moves designed to generate hope instead of hard, less-glamorous decisions designed to win games.
Posted by: jcabana | September 24, 2007 2:16 PM
That last series of downs will go into the NFL Films archive as some of the worst game management on every level. It rivals what used to pass for football in forsaken markets like NO and Cincinatti. Piss and vinegar is called for.
Posted by: DisgustedFan | September 24, 2007 2:17 PM
Maybe the worst logic in the world is taking the one long run out of somebody's total and then saying "now look." I mean, there is really nothing more absurd.
Posted by: Wes Mantooth | September 24, 2007 2:18 PM
The Lions being 2-1 tell you the same thing as the Redskins being 2-1: that it's not time to jump off a bridge because your team lost one game.
Posted by: jcabana | September 24, 2007 2:18 PM
Greg, we are all pissed today. The game was not only ours for the taking but it was the manner in whcih we lost. All Skins fans thought that those kind of losses were a thing of the past....we were wrong. We are angry because we feel that this frnachise will never turn the corner and that for evry step forward that we take...we take two steps back. So understandably....were are pissed.

All of you are right in some ways, but going way overboard on other items... Carlos Rogers is who he is, same as last week. CALM DOWN. He's decent, but no shut down... He's got work to do...
Biggest problem was we could not run the ball and the Giants D imposed their will on us when tried to Run...
The Reaper is a load of over-hyped BS. I'm in a love/hate relationship with him... He cannot keep over pursuing guys like he did w the P Burress TD pass/run. That is BS... He's not a rookie or 2nd year guy andymore and GW better stick it to him. That cannot go unmentioned. IF he did his job as centerfielder he would have made a solid tackle to PREVENT THE BIG PLAY. BTW - His interception was a gimme from LBM. Taylor gets too much credit. I was a big proponenet of him, but his performance seemed to go down in the middle of last year. He was being relied on too much to make too many tackes because of the porous line and LB's... He doesn't have to be a a highlight machine. If those secondaey/safety coaches can't get him straight they need to go...
Coaches need to address why Cooley is pass blocking so much that is BS. If our line can't protect JC well enough then we need a better O line. End of Story. Stop F'in away picks and build this team's foundation on the O and D line.
We are what we are this year... 9-7 at best... but that was a game we needed and simply gave away, like last year and the middle games in 2005.

ITA skinz for not recognizing the reality between 4.4 & 3.3
Posted by: Anonymous | September 24, 2007 2:23 PM
I don't know how you can fault the defense for this loss.
The offense couldn't run the ball and sustain drives. JC is young, he's going to be awesome, but he's young. He showed flashes of brilliance on that final drive, and lots of youth on the drives previous to that. Like Rypien's first full season in 1990, JC makes some dumb mistakes and some brilliant plays. It'll take time, you have to give the kid a chance. Meanwhile, when you have a young QB, it is positively inexplicable to me that they didn't put the game on CP's shoulders. They have a franchise back and they're not using him, or they're not telling us the truth about his injury condition.
And, once more I have to reiterate: three-fifths of that offensive line were not starters in training camp. The running game is purely one-dimensional at this point, running behind Samuels and Kendall. This is why Randy Thomas isn't on IR: the coaching staff knows that they're a .500 team with the state of the line as it is, and they are praying that he gets back in time to help them make a run.
Finally, we need to give major props to Rock Cartwright, ARE, and the whole special teams. Aside from Shazam's one missed FG, they were close to perfect.
Oh, and one more thing...because I love football as much as I love the 'Skins: the Cowboys were pretty impressive last night. It would make me cry to see them in the Super Bowl, but you have to admit that they look pretty good.
Posted by: P Diddy | September 24, 2007 2:23 PM
Wes Mantooth, I agree it is absurd to take the 16 yard run out of Portis average. He had 4.4 ypc and 1 TD. The statistics are incomplete though ... his fumble was a game changer and, if he had held onto the pass in the right flat in the 3rd quarter, it could have been 2 TDs. Portis had a bad day.
What surprised me was the bit from the previous thread that JustMe posted ... about how Saunders didn't know why (or that) Portis wasn't going to be in the game for that last series.

Last year Baltimore owner basically told Billick (a guy who has won a Super Bowl for him) that his job is on the line. Billick ended up taking over play calling because if his job is on the line, he will get the team to play his way. Ravens went on a roll.
Danny need to basically tell G2.0 (let's not call him Gibbs until he proved that he can still coach) the same thing. Basically right now G2.0 is getting about 1 million per win with his huge contract. If he were anyone else, Danny would have fired him. Norv was a better head coach for Redskins than G2.0.
G2.0 - call your own plays. If you suck, you get fired. And we know you suck. You lack the motivation and work ethics of the real Joe Gibbs.
The real Joe Gibbs would get his team to beat up on teams they are supposed to beat up on. The real Joe Gibbs will get his teams to surprise and find ways to win against teams they are not supposed to win.
G2.0's teams look confused and lost most of the time. They always lose to better teams and find ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory against sucky teams.
Fire G2.0. I don't want to see Cowher next year either. Find a young Offensive guy who is hungry for Wins and want to establish himself.
We may no longer be Over the Hill gang for the players...but the coaches sure are Over The Hill..
FIRE G2.0
Thank you

Hey, people, CALM DOWN. I have some good news...the Skins are 2-1. Not 0-3 and 1-2.
They have a bye week, they can work on some things.
I agree with J-Lac's comments. But who knows who's calling the plays. Joe and Al have to be on the same page.
I am angry just like everyone. Recall my post on the chat on Friday, about being 2-0 in the division.
The one time Rogers wasn't looking at the QB, he lets Burress take it to the house.
I remembered the report on him coming out of Auburn was that he was physical...but more like lackadaisical. I missed Smoot on Sunday. They could've at least rotated him in with Rogers.
That said, the handling of the last 4 plays of the game was embarrassing.
Why not run a naked bootleg? J-Cam is fast.
As for him struggling to roll left and throw, I think he lost some confidence...in fact the whole team did.
Jason was making his 10th start, and he is a WIP (work in progress).
You hear some say that the handcuffs should be taken off of him, and others say that they should've run the ball more.
I say it should be both. It's time to let Jason start walking on his own, rather than continue to crawl as an NFL QB.
Having said that, I still believe that he's going to be a good one (or the The Truth as J-Lac has said).
My only plea is this: stop comparing him to Schroeder.
Because that is almost as embarrassing as the clock/play management at the end of the game.
Go Skins!

Both teams are inflated at this point - try to take a longer view than just week to week. What do you see in place that will change the direction of the team against mediocre opponents much less the stronger teams ? It's just not there for me.
Getting the Lions at RFK used to be a laugher. Now the Lions will come in and Martz will have no fear in slinging it all over the field.
Where are the tangible signs that this organization has learned and has made changes ? Gibbs is entrenched, Saunders is entrenched and certainly Williams is entrenched. Who at the end of the day hurts more in losses - the players who treat this as "business" and pick up game checks or the fans who have to keep deluding themselves that the times will change ?

There's a reason we don't see Portis as a receiver out of the backfield a whole lot, and yesterday shows why. We're all enamored of getting CP out in space, but he's not LT or Faulk in the day. I'm not going to kill him for that or for the fumble, of which JC was partly responsible.
In the end, CP needs the carries at the goalline. Backs like Portis don't score a lot of TDs by accident or by being lucky or opportunistic. And you feed a back like Portis because you never know when the long run of 16 might instead be a long run of 45 and a touch.

This team just lost it's focus in the 2nd half. They got ahead, they got complacent and then they got beat.
This game should serve as a reminder that they can't just show up and win. They have to bring it every week.
If they can match the intensity they had in the Philly game and the 1wt half of this weeks game, they'll be competative week in and week out. If not--we're screwed.

Printer Recommendation: Canons, baby, all the way. I replaced a Lexmark last year that was actually a pretty good printer, but it was five years old. The replacement is the Canon MP600 inkjet, which runs around $150.00. Separate colors in the ink supply, so you can replace them as needed. With the photo paper, you can't tell the difference from photo lab prints. As for HP, the Lexmark was purchased AFTER I spent two days trying to get an HP installed -- unsuccessfully. Check the Canon reviews on cnet, and buy Canon.

Or do you mean that in order to run ladies you need first downs?
Repeating ambiguous statements multiple times, even in all caps, only further confuses us. It doesn't reinforce your point.

Figures don't lie but liars do figures. Is this supposed to be analysis? If you look at any starting running backs numbers you will, more often than not, find that they have many short runs interspersed with a few long runs. Most of the time it's those 3.3 yd carries that wear a D down and lead to the longer runs. The problem yesterday was that the team did not mix up the play calling which presumably would have sustained drives and permitted more runs.
Posted by: LH | September 24, 2007 2:34 PM
couldn't disagree more. we tried to establish a run game and got denied. we needed to take more shots down field when we had the learn to stretch the field- get those safeties out of the box. We failed. we lost our best lineman (thomas) and his mate to the right...we simply aren't as good running as we think we are- thus we need to help the RBs out. and little dump passes aren't what i'm referencing...

I personally believe that Ladell Betts is unable to score touchdowns because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have touchdowns, and, uh, I believe that our education, like such as in South Africa and the Iraq -- everywhere like such as -- and I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help Ladell Betts, or should help Mike Sellers, and should help the Jason Campbell and the receiver, so we will be able to build up our touchdowns for us.

2 TCCLs for Jasno's printer retirement.
Maximum possible score would have been 4 TCCLs (on degree of difficulty), but would have required (1) not keeping it inside a plastic bag and (2) climbing onto and throwing it from the roof. Could have been 4.5 by waiting for the Customer Support supervisor to come on the line, putting the supervisor on speaker phone, and THEN destroying the printer.

Posted by: realist | September 24, 2007 02:35 PM
I dunno if I agree about how hard they tried to establish the running game before deciding that it was "denied." Skins killed on time of possession in the first half BECAUSE of the running game, which wore down the D. Giants used the same strategy in the second half. Not sure why the Skins abandoned it ... unless Portis really did re-injure his knee.
Am I the only one who saw him hop-skip across the field before the end of the half, which became a hop-limp by the time he reached the sideline? It was right before the first Skins' timeout (when Betts subbed in mid-series on 3rd and 1, lost 4 yards on a RUSHING play with 46 seconds left on the 25, and then the FG team came on with 4 seconds left).

JLC shows how little he knows about football by talking about run/pass ratios. Those ratios only exist because MOST of the time teams who are winning can run in the 4th quarter. AGAIN, that stupid run/pass ratio is a RESULT of good running teams running it a bunch in the 4th quarter. IF YOU AVERAGE 2 YARDS A RUN, YOU CANNOT RUN IT 40 TIMES. People who know football would laugh at this recent post.
A team like the Skins, who are faced with 3rd and longs because their running game sucks HAVE TO PASS ON THIRD DOWN TO KEEP THE BALL AND RUN OUT THE CLOCK. And if they are keying the run, like the Giants were, YOU HAVE TO PASS ON 1ST AND 2ND DOWN SOMETIMES. Otherwise you will have 2nd and 15 because you got stopped for a loss cause they knew you were gonna run.
JLC knows so little about football, and the fans that congratulate him for his "great analysis" know even less.

I would place even more blame on the failed offense of the 2nd half on Portis as much as I love him. One drive stalled when he had strahan one on one out in the flat and couldn't catch a perfectly good pass and the second drive failed when he fumbled the ball in our territory.
Sure the play calling at the goal line there was suspect. I personally was expecting to see 3 wrs and then a hand off to sellers. It makes the most sense. But lets look at why we got there in the first place. Two stalled drives courtesy of Portis didn't help matters.
We are seeing the lack of practice with Campbell and Moss has he keeps overthrowing him while wide open deep.
Also the coaches have to give campbell some more room. A veteran QB would have walked up to that first and goal and faked a spike and tried to sneak in a quick pass to the end zone... doesn't work then its just like spiking the ball and there is no harm no foul.
The margin of victory is so small in this league. If we could have made one play on 3rd down on defense all second half we would have won. The D got complacent against a hungry veteran giants team with its back to the wall and it showed. Its something we were afraid about all week and justifiably so.
As another commentor posted the magical 40 run number really is more a result of being ahead but It would have been nice to have seen 3 straight portis runs in the 2nd half. Oh wait we were and then he FUMBLED.
Guys I was really down about losing to the point that I was seriously considering taking a break from all Redskins articles blogs etc... for a couple days then I realized that in spite of all the mistakes we were quite close.
In many ways we are a very young team. We got rid of a bunch of veterans and are letting the youngsters have a chance. I expect us to gel more and get more of that killer instinct of the season goes on especially after the pain in their gut from losing this past game. We all knew this wasn't our year. It is our year to come together as a team play solid football and make the playoffs and make a serious run to the superbowl next year with JC in his 3rd year of starting.
Ok I've mind dumped long enough.

Excellent analysis.
One nit to pick: Caldwell and Lloyd are both 6-0, Caldwell has no height advantage. This has no bearing on your argument overall. I understand why BL gets the treatment he does on RI. How the team treats him is (almost the same)...go figure?

Remember the time we debated in circles about 'effective running' and how easy it is to say 'run the ball'? oh, we're still doing it? GRRRREEEEAAAATTTTT.
When were the extra runs supposed to occur? The 3rd and 8s?
Bottom line: at a certain point, no matter what it chooses to do, an offense has to be effective. We couldn't throw or run in that 2nd half until the final drive. You can take the number of runs and throw them out the window (though they'd be dropped). The numbers that matter are the 3 and outs; the number of completely ineffective plays on offense. What also matters is our 'improved D' is better than last year; in the same way that 1 is more than 0. We've still got the same problems. Absolutely embarrassing that we validated the worst general managing decision in NFL history for the 3rd straight year by allowing eli manning to beat us.
Everything else JLC says is on point. There was a giants fan at Hill Country on Sunday. He celebrated and made noise during the worst times. I had nothing to say to him. No response. (*^&% the Redskins for putting me in that position.

biggest conserns:
Has Campbell been even close to a 300 yd game yet? I like the kid but we need to see some production, I could throw for 190 yards against the giants D. I think he averages 200 a game, which is great compaired to Brunell. Somethings not right there.
I get the feeling that we are playing AFC ball in the NFC East, and we need to stop that now.
