Omar Is Back, As Expected
Safety Omar Stoutmire gets the roster spot vacated by Marcus Mason being released. Signed today.
He is insurance this week against a team that will throw the heck out of the ball with two safties (Vernon Fox and Pierson Prioleau) trying to get back from injuries suffered Sunday.

From previous thread:
Personally, I'm fine with one of the most dangerous returners in the league, ARE, and it is more dangerous to return punts than play offense, keep Sean exactly where he is, we have the talent to compete at every position as is. We just need to stay healthy.
and Peri, do you just not care what double G said all offseason? that he wanted to free ST up to get picks and force fumbles, not blitz or play in the box. And I guess Ed Reed and Troy Polomolollloo don't get any INT's.
Posted by: Jack | September 12, 2007 11:27 AM
I don't mind that Taylor plays center field. I just hope he's up to it. Always seems a second late on throws. Polo and Dawkins are far more disruptive against the pass than ST.

Jack, would love to help you out on this, but I can't consider it a "debate" when the one on the other side of the argument is just contradicting for the sake of contradiction ... with an occasional name drop of some Skins of years gone by thrown in as if it lends credibility or persuasive force.
Posted by: dcsween | September 12, 2007 11:30 AM
Ed Reed is better than Sean Taylor. Hopefully Sean can be even better than Reed, but he still has a lot to learn and I hope this year will be another step....

Jack, I hear ya. Sa-da-tey has him some hands... he picked up that blocked kick return against Dallas on the fly, didn't he?
Posted by: Dik | September 12, 2007 11:32 AM
The way Philly throws the ball, Sean Taylor will see a lot of action this weekend which means that we will see a lot of carnage.
Hooray Carnage!
Posted by: etrod | September 12, 2007 11:32 AM
Skinz, in the past I totally agree with you, but last year he was worried about the run too much and Arch Delux. Now, all he has to do is hang back and flow to the ball or decapitate anyone silly enough to go over the middle. I didn't see a single pass over 30 yards in the Miami game and we gave up like 3 a game last year. And that long bomb down the sidelines to Chambers over Smoot that was overthrown, if it isn't Taylow makes that catch very uncomfortable for Chambers, he was right there.

Jets extend Moore's contract
The Jets refused to give left guard Pete Kendall a $1 million raise this season because he still had three years remaining on his contract, ultimately trading him, but they've done just that with Brandon Moore. The veteran right guard has signed a new contract that will raise his base pay this season to $1.8 million, according to an NFL source - coincidentally, a $1 million raise. -- NY Daily News

Tank Johnson on Cowboys radar?
As the Cowboys look to bolster their nose tackle position with Jason Ferguson out for the season with a torn right biceps, former Chicago Bears tackle Tank Johnson's name has come up, according to sources. On Tuesday, Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones would not comment on the team's potential interest in Johnson, who is serving an eight-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, but acknowledged that any player's off-field behavior is discussed. "That's part of the equation," Jones said. "On the field, off the field, medical, we look at all of that before we decide whether to sign anybody." -- Dallas Morning News

When a player has been cut by his team, does an eight-game suspension include a bye week?,

POSTED 10:58 a.m. EDT, September 12, 2007
TANK'S SUSPENSION IS SHRINKING
NFL spokesman Greg Aiello, responding to a Wednesday morning e-mail inquiry, tells us that the eight-game suspension imposed on defensive tackle Tank Johnson is being served, even though he's not currently on a team.
So, as a practical matter, Johnson apparently will be eligible to return after Week Eight.
This news conflicts with our prior understanding that a suspension can't be served by a player who isn't under contract with a team. For example, we thought that receiver Andre Rison's NFL career ended prematurely had ended because he would have to serve a four-game suspension promptly after signing with a new team.
We've believed the Rison rule to be accurate for so long that we couldn't recall how we first came to believe that it was the standard practice. To support our misimpression, we found a 2003 Tip Sheet from ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli, wherein Len writes as follows: "Rison, 37, faces a four-game suspension if he ever signs a contract because of past sanctions resulting from a repeat violation of the NFL's substance abuse policy."
But, per Aiello, the standard practice is to give players credit toward their suspensions for games that are played even if the players aren't on an NFL roster. We've since confirmed, for example, that receiver Antonio Bryant's remaining two-game suspension from 2006 will be satisfied after Week Two, despite the fact that he is not currently on any team.

Jack,
IMO Chambers would have made that catch and gotten out of bounds. Maybe Taylor lays the wood once he catch it and drills him out of bounds.
Either way a great play from the Safety is an INT (which i'm not saying was possible on that particular play because of the overthrow) , a good plays is to break it up. Hitting the guy hard after he caught a 40 yard pass isn't a good play, just a good highlight.

skinz,
thanks for the airport advice.
I don't understand all the noise over the Caldwell signing either... unless of course the Skins gave him a big deal. Caldwell now becomes the 5th option for JC behind Moss, Cooley, ARE, and Betts/Portis (whoever is in the game). I wish the Skins would focus their attention elsewhere, especially since we already have 30/12 and 2 mid round picks invested in the 5th WR option.
about Ed Reed... he is the best defensive player in the game, period. The guy changes games on a weekly basis. Taylor does not do that, and to be honest, I don't think he has the potential to ever do that. LaRon Landry does though, IMO of course.
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | September 12, 2007 11:46 AM
It's silly to say what would or wouldn't have happened if the ball wasn't overthrown, it looked to me like Taylor held up and wasn't closing full speed seeing where the pass was so I think he gets there when the ball does if it is thrown right, remember, Chambers laid out and the ball was still way by him, in stride would have been 6 to 8 yards shorter. Anyway, doesn't matter, can't crucify him for a coulda been mistake, it wasn't, and there weren't any other truly deep balls completed which is the reaper's new job.

Taylor won three games single handedly with INT returns in our playoff year. Last year was a throw away year across the board. Taylor is a top three safety physically and is now in a system that hopefully will highlight his strengths. And its silly to say Landry has that kind of potential after a decent preseason and 1 game where he made not impactful plays of any game changing significance, lets hope he has a solid year, but don't tell me he is already better than the reaper, or that he has more talent then him.

I agree with you on ST vs L-squared. I think ultimately LaRon will be the more well rounded player if not the talent.
Jack,
*Sigh* I think you just like to argue...
It's not really silly to say what I think would have happened. I watched it on DVR (which doesn't really show the play in relation to Taylor all that well.) and saw it in real life from about 20 yards away.
I'd bet dollars to donuts that ST doesn't get there in time to disrupt that play if it's thrown in stride. It's not a huge deal but I'll stand by what I said in my last post. He makes better highlight reels than spectacular plays.

Sounds to me like someone is confessing to be the nickname-faker, and trying to explain away the faking as an effort to turn the conversation on this blog "back to football." And I am guessing I was picked out because I am the most prominent poster of non-football comments.
I appreciate your fessing up to this, dude, if that was in fact a confession, but you have to know this blog is bigger than me, or you, or anybody at this point.
It's going to be heavy on football when there's football to discuss -- see this past weekend -- and in other times it will be heavy on the jibba jabba. Jason set the tone for that from the very beginning, over a year ago now.
Ticking me off by faking my nickname doesn't seem to serve any purpose, does it?
Thanks..,

Am I the only one who thinks that Rogers needs to be moved to safty, No 24 and 27 become CB1-2. I would not be annoyed by the 22 yrd buffer zone I see he gives every play if he was a 3rd down coverage safty type. I sware while watching Sundays game, (i taped it and watched after work), I never saw him on the screen when lining up.
Posted by: 35332 | September 12, 2007 11:58 AM
Jack,
Please name the 3 games Taylor had picks that "single-handedly" won games for the Skins? I remember 2 games where he got lucky bounces on fumbles, and made a nice return, but nothing in the secondary that requires coverage skills...
Posted by: Ricky Bobby | September 12, 2007 12:00 PM
I don't just like to argue, but I also can't let someone say that a rookie, with no significant plays of any sort, and who by all accounts is a great "in the box" safety but doesn't have the best hands or cover skills is better or has more potential than Sean Taylor. Last year was a down year for this defense, but the reaper the previous year had diving INT's, multiple strips and fumble recoveries, scored 21 points down the stretch in a play-off push/run, made many WR's get alligator arms including TO, and is one of the most physically gifted players in the league. Yes he has some work to do to become an elite safety and we all hope he gets there, but don't tell me Landry is already better or has more potential.

RB,
Whats wrong with ST being a hard hitting safty?

We fans certainly obsess about the DMZ between our CBs and the opposing WRs. Does anyone know if the coaches have been questioned about it? Do they see it as a problem (I wouldn't think so)?
Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 12, 2007 12:02 PM
Skinz, I'd say singlehandedly winning the Dallas game was a spectacular play AND a highlight.

Ricky,
The Philly game to clinch the playoffs in '05 comes to mind. I remember it being a fumble recovery, too.
Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 12, 2007 12:04 PM
The Arizona game, the St. Louie, the Philly game, and the playoff game in Tampa. The above people were right they were fumble recoveries returned but multiple picks during the five game win streak, and we don't win any of those above mentioned games without the reaper.

glad to see nate and diddy and the hole blog recognizing that burning thru 17 Qb's over the last 15yr s is probbally 15 too many....anyway you know my many times repeated stance on that .....this year is the time for sean to maximize his physical gifts and translate into a consistent play maker, free saftey is the right place for him.....the reciever needs to step up before the bye week, i said they would give him the early part of the season to show something .....he gets 2 more weeks.
Posted by: Old School | September 12, 2007 12:10 PM
Jack,
Please name the picks you are talking about during our 5 game win streak... Taylor has had very few picks in his career and I remember zippy in that 5 game win stretch.
Also, there is no doubt that LaRon has better natural instincts than Sean. I could see it from day 1 in the pre-season. Just watch...
35332,
There is nothing wrong with ST being a hard-hitting safety, but I fear that is one of the only things going for him. You have to be able to cover to play corner or safety. Ed Reed is an unbeliveable hitter, he can cover, and he is natural instincts no one can top. ST needs to get better in coverage, and hopefully he's headed in that direction...

Posted by: Troy Vincent | September 12, 2007 12:13 PM
35,
We don't need another safety we need another corner lol.
Jack,
You are confusing who said what but in this case I'll disagree just the same. He picked up the ball and ran it back to get in long range field goal range to be sure.
However, to say he did it singlehadedly diminishes the roles of the man who actually blocked the punt and the dude who kicked the 50 or so yarder....
Posted by: Skinz | September 12, 2007 12:13 PM
Cindy's, Joe talked about it yesterday on Redskins Radio, paraphrasing:
that they know what they are doing, they you don't always play press or else the defense knows whats coming, that carlos and fred prefer to press but that sometimes they are dropping them back on purpose and that a LB is supposed to cover the short lane and sometimes they press and other times they are supposed to jump the route with safety protection over the top.
Personally, I hate the buffer and rogers and smoot have always done it and it drives me nuts, but that was Gibbs response to a caller who directly asked about the "buffer" on third down by our corners.

JAck - Gibbs 2.4 also said the the coverage called dictates wheather you press or you back off as well....

Re: serving suspensions
So if these players (tank johnson, antonio bryant) are "serving" their suspensions even though they aren't on any nfl team then why did ricky williams have to serve his drug-related suspension after coming out of "retirement" a couple of years ago. I seem to recall that he sat out the first 4 games that year...
And the suspensions shouldn't include bye weeks, it's the number of games not weeks they're suspended
Posted by: Gibby | September 12, 2007 12:21 PM
PS when I say potential I'm not speaking in a physically gifted sort of way.
We drafted ST in 04' and 4 seasons later do you think he's improved demonstrably? I don't.
Like most of lifes endevours the gifts you are born with only get you so far.
I'm not down on Reaper either. I love the guy and hope one day he goes to the HOF. If i had to put money down on it right now I'd put it on LL. Not for what he HAS done but for what ST HASN'T done.
Posted by: Skinz | September 12, 2007 12:21 PM
This debate as to who the better safety is, is downright ridiculous. It's like who's the better date: Scarlet Johansen or Salma Hayek? They both have their upside but it is never going to happen.
Posted by: bangkokben | September 12, 2007 12:22 PM
ST had two FF, two Ints, and 2 TD's during the month of December in 2005, doesn't break it down by game, and my memory isn't good enough to remember when, but come on guys, Landry is not better than ST now and doesn't have more potential. Maybe his "instincts" are better, I'm not as qualified as Ricky Bobby to say that or not, but I know there wouldn't be anybody on that team or in the league that says Landry is better, more physically gifted, or has more potential than Sean.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2007 12:26 PM
Sean's only problem is that he got stuck behind a really crappy front seven last year and everyone says he "regressed", he's going to have a monster year this year and he and Landry are going to be a dominant pair for a long time.
Posted by: Jack | September 12, 2007 12:27 PM
I was born in D.C. and grew up Maryland. Die hard skins fan and not one of these guys that is always pointing out the negative, but Sean Taylor is not good. He should have never made the pro bowl. He is always late on pass plays or overruns tackles. The only reason he had a lot of tackles last year is b/c our d-line couldn't stop anyone. I have no idea where he got that ridiculously unfit nickname. I will be glad if we don't resign him.
Posted by: craig | September 12, 2007 12:27 PM
Let me correct myself... ST might have had a pick in the Arizona game in '05, but I don't remember any others.
Seriously, how many does he have in his career? The one against SF that he almost returned for a TD, the one to clinch the Carolina game, the one in AZ, I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

Posted: Wednesday September 12, 2007 05:38AM ET
Eli Manning is a longshot for Sunday's game against the Packers but hasn't been ruled out. If he can't make it this week, the Giants are confident Manning will return Sept. 23 to face the Redskins in Washington. Perhaps believing the Giants are looking for help, the Buccaneers, according to reports, have contacted the Giants to gauge any interest they might have in Chris Simms, son of Phil.

Back to Pats for a minute, I agree with Kornheiser. Start by docking them high-round picks. Then, if it continues, keep taking the lower picks.
Realistically, Goodell isn't going to dock the guys he works for first-round picks for a first offense (well, first-time-caught offense).

Having conversations back and forth is what this blog is about so I don't understand why some people have a problem with it. It's on topic and not name calling so what's with all the whining?
Taylor has been Johnny on the spot many times in his career and I think had a fumble recovery in the Tampa playoff game no?
I'm not diminishing who he is. I like the guy but I'm not seeing him turn into what Dawkins was, Reed and Polo are. I don't see his football IQ or reads improving like they should.
Posted by: Skinz | September 12, 2007 12:36 PM
Okay. My two cents. Drawn in like a moth to a flame.
Sean Taylor: More like Alvin Walton than Ronny Lott. Good safety. Better than Roy Williams - for sure. Unlimited potential. Let him go and its Champ Bailey lamenting all over again.
Laron Landry: Disciplined. Great potential. A real strong safety.
In the past Williams never refered to Taylor as a free safety but everyone who follows football knows that that has been his position since at the U and in DC. Unfortunately, he never had a true strong safety to play opposite him. Sean will be better this year because of LaRon. Can't tell how much better LaRon is with ST unless he's there without him.

I'm glad Coach Joe finally took my advice and signed Reche Caldwell - not because he's an ex-Gator, but because he was cheap and available (and better than #85). Gibbs didn't listen to me when I told him not to trade ex-Gator Taylor Jacobs for Mike Rumph. Jacobs is still with SF, and Rumph is out of the league.
I may not know anything about the NFL, but the Ol' Ball Coach knows his old Gator receivers!

Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2007 12:41 PM
Skinz I actually agree, I don't think he will either, those are hall of fame safeties, but after those guys and Bob Sanders, name me one other safety you would take before Taylor? maybe a couple names are close, but nobody is better after those 4. and a young top 5 safety aint bad and certainly is worth signing. The only question is will he demand ridiculous money, if so things then get tricky, if he wants top five money he's worth it, if he wants biggest contract ever money then who knows. But I think they extend him this offseason before he ever sees FA.
Posted by: Jack | September 12, 2007 12:42 PM
Maybe you're right, Anonymous person. I think it's also possible Belichick was just messing with the Jets' minds. He loves to do that sort of thing.
I agree that they have to make this punitive and it has to increase with number of times an offense is committed.

LBM Update
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Giants quarterback Eli Manning was at practice Wednesday, taking snaps and handing off as he tested his bruised right shoulder.
He was scheduled to throw later in the day.
Giants coach Tom Coughlin gave no indication whether Manning would play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers but said, "I am encouraged by his progress."
Coughlin also said Manning is not as sore as he was a few days ago and that the swelling in his shoulder had subsided.
Jared Lorenzen took snaps with the first team, and would make his first career start if Manning can't play.
Manning, who was hurt in the fourth quarter of Sunday night's season-opening 45-35 loss at Dallas, has started the last 42 regular season and playoff games for New York.
Coughlin said Manning's status is day-to-day.
"We'll take everything into consideration, realize that he wants to play and is extremely competitive, and at the right time, we'll make the proper call," Coughlin said.
Coughlin refused to set a deadline for Manning, who completed 28-of-41 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns in the loss.
"We'll give him every opportunity," Coughlin said.
Coughlin also was encouraged by the injury report on defensive end Osi Umenyiora. He hurt a knee in the first quarter against Dallas. He also is being listed as day-to-day.
Halfback Brandon Jacobs will be out up to a month with a knee injury.
Kicker Lawrence Tynes did not practice Wednesday because of a calf injury. He is expected to kick on Thursday.
Coughlin said that free agent Josh Huston, who was barely beat out by Tynes in training camp, would be among his top choices if New York needed a new kicker this weekend.

I was still optimistic about lloyd, brandon coming into this season. I was blinded by the lights of those absurd catches and recall the days in San fran when he was the only person on their roster you were the slightest bit nervous about. I think this Caldwell signing signals the end (clap) of the road (clap) for lloyd, brandon.
That dude failed me.
Also, we have 12 WRs and safeties on the active roster. Does that bother anyone? It bothers me. That's the answer to that little riddle.
Let the Wade era begin. I promise you all that you won't be disappointed.

Yes, Taylor was a RB until he went to Miami. They happened to have Portis, Gore, McGahee and Davenport on the roster so Taylor moved to safety. Man that team had talent.

I'm going to step away from my normal "Lloyd sucks" stance and play devil's advocate here for a minute. Lloyd was thrown to twice on Sunday (that I noticed). He actually caught one but it didn't count because we took the penalty on the defense. As far as the interception goes, I look at it like this....I love Soup but if that ball would have been thrown on the money then he wouldn't have had to jump so high and worry about wrestling it away from the defender. We tend to blame everything on Lloyd because of last year. We need to give him at least until the bye week.
Let the bigfish fry begin.
Posted by: bigfish | September 12, 2007 1:19 PM
bigfish, jumping so high is the only way Lloyd, Brandon plays. He doesn't make pedestrian throws. Its one thing if you are Carlos Rogers and have a ball between your hands and don't hang on. Its another if your roster spot is actually called wide receiver. The ball was thrown comfortably btwn his palms.
Posted by: dcsweeb | September 12, 2007 1:21 PM
btwn, 1:12 really was me ... trying on my new 'dcsweeb' disguise.
So does the mean that Stoutmire is more valuable on special teams than Marcus Mason?
Posted by: dcsween | September 12, 2007 1:24 PM
We will have agree to disagree on the ball being thrown comfortably between his palms. If that were the case then he wouldn't have been fully extended at the highest point of his vertical leap.
Posted by: bigfish | September 12, 2007 1:25 PM
Zeeb wondered if this was a frame job by Mangini. No, it wasn't.
According to PTI, the Pats camera guy was first escorted from the Packers stadium on Novermber 19 for filming coaches. Security failed to confiscate his camera, so no visual evidence was available to prove cheating allegations.
During the Jets game on Sunday, the same Pats guy was detained by NFL security, and his camera was sealed in a box and sent directly to Goodell. Based on the Commish's response, he now has direct visual evidence of the camera guy filming the Jets' defensive coaches.
In the last post, etrod questioned the utility of filming the hand signals. Filming signals is especially beneficial against divisional opponents who you will meet a second time that year. But in the same game, coaches can also compare hand signals to pictures of plays in the first half and make second half adjustments.
Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 12, 2007 1:25 PM
I have been on the take all along that the receiver can play and we should just let the guy do that this year and let the chips fall where they may. Then the guy gets two looks when the top two targets are blanketed all day. I also remember the FO jettisoning the safety whose name escapes me but he's playing in Chicago. ;) I think the writing is on the wall. "Make a bigger effort or watch the games on this nice plasma."
Posted by: bangkokben | September 12, 2007 1:27 PM
I actually don't want to fry the big fish. Lloyd is this year's Bingus. The scapegoat of the team. He needs to do more with what's being given to him (catch TD passes) but you can also argue that JC isn't throwing to him because he has no confidence in his abilities. He seemed as open as anyone, but if I'm the QB and the guy keeps letting me down, I'm throwing to guys I know will get it done.
Its like back yard football. That chubby fat kid is always going to be open because the D knows when you pass it to him he'll just drop it. I'd rather make sure I get into the hands of the guys I know will get results. Lloyd, Brandon is that chubby fat kid that the QB doesn't trust with the ball. Remember Lloyd put himself in that situation.

bigfish,
Al Saunders remarked last season that Lloyd, Brandon is the best WR in the NFL from his wrists to his fingertips. OK then, now we have our target zone. Let's roll the tape. Look at picture #15.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2007 1:37 PM
Big fish, you're right, the ball was not between his hands. The reason was not a bad throw however, Lloyd had bad timing and jumped too early. If he has waited another step to jump, it would have been a relatively simple catch for 6. That INT is on Lloyd. Hopefully they encouraged Campbell to continue to take shots when he has single coverage. Sometimes thats as close to "open" as you get in the NFL.
Posted by: Mike H. | September 12, 2007 1:37 PM
I'm not ready to give up on Lloyd, either. But, we need to start seeing some improvement REALLY soon. If he's going up against the #3 cb on the other team, he needs to be getting open, and he needs to be catching the ball.

For prespective, I am re-reading JLC's section on Lloyd in the January article "Problems at the Core."
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/31/AR2006123101079_pf.html
Lloyd is an a$$hat (e.g., pulling off his helmet in Atlanta; blaming a completely catchable ball as 10 feet over his head).
Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 12, 2007 1:44 PM
All I ever hear is that Lloyd has amazing physical skills, I watched the play, I you tubed the play, and I saw the still shots, a corner who is 3 inches shorter was behind Lloyd, the ball absolutely went right through his hands and the CB was higher and behind him and caught the ball after it went through his hands. At the very least he should have touched the ball, and then didn't even attempt to tackle the guy. It was pitiful.
Posted by: Jack | September 12, 2007 1:46 PM
How about David Boston for a WR... I know he's been banged up the past few years and hasn't come back as strong, but does he still have the talent to be our #3....
I heard on 980am that TB just released him. He used to be an absolute beast (albeit a beast on Roids)... I don't see why we don't work him out.
Posted by: E in VB | September 12, 2007 1:46 PM
Erratum: the receiver claimed Soups' pass was 10 yards underthrown. He also yelled at assistant coaches when he disagreed with them and really seems like a locker room cancer and distraction.
I say sit him now.
Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 12, 2007 1:48 PM
prolly 'cause he roofied himself. don't need someone who tries to date-rape themselves on the team.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2007 1:49 PM
It's also been noted that Lloyd slowed down during his route. If he had been going full out the entire route he doesn't have Travis Fisher take the ball from his outstretched hands. Maybe Lloyd just drops it there. =\
Posted by: bobzmuda | September 12, 2007 1:50 PM
I can't believe Lloyd doesn't realize that his Career in on the line this year and if he doesn't step up he could be done... Jack said it right... pitiful! Missing a completely catchable ball like that (we've seen him catch with one hand) and not even running to make the tackle.... BAMF!
I hate that guy so bad right now... He better have a big game on Monday to redeem himself or he's a worthless piece of SJK!
Posted by: E in VB | September 12, 2007 1:50 PM
Here's the solution to the receiver. Put him on the scout team and repeatedly send him over the midlle. Let Boonell loft some passes to him and Kapow! Meet the Reaper. Maybe then he will be get the point.
Oh Yeah Jack, I bet you are a Hoot at family gatherings. Keep it real
Posted by: TBag | September 12, 2007 1:52 PM
E in VB, Boston is still going to have a suspension to work off. From the incoherence above about how suspensions work, the only pattern I can see is that suspensions for second time substance abuse policy offenders have to be worked off AFTER you are actually on some team's active roster.
Posted by: dcsween | September 12, 2007 1:53 PM
Are we done? Bodiford stays and Lloyd, carry 6 wr's on the active roster? I think we see one more move, they can't keep 6 wr's can they?
Posted by: Jack | September 12, 2007 1:55 PM
What I love about Sean Taylor is how Terrell Owens is deathly afraid of him and hears footsteps everytime he goes across the middle. I've seen him drop passes because he was worried about Sean. Can't quote you game and verse, but I've seen it.
Great game for Pete Kendall -- the guy looks like he's been here for years.
Also great game for Portis, Sellers, and Cooley. The blocking was very physical. Even though some blocks didn't seem effective, Cooley did block well but the ball carriers didn't always set up the block right or use it right and cut back into the arms of the guy Cooley had blocked. Nevertheless, everybody was puttin' a hurtin' on them Fish!
Posted by: rb | September 12, 2007 1:57 PM
Jack, I'm thinking they keep as many players at whatever position on the roster to insure a starter at every position, plus a bunch of other guys who can contribute on special teams.
Posted by: dcsween | September 12, 2007 1:58 PM
With cooler temperatures on Monday night, I expect the Philly game to feel "faster" than the Miami game. That game felt a little "sluggish" esp. by the second half.
Posted by: dcsween | September 12, 2007 2:00 PM
The solution to Lloyd is the next time he cuts himself shaving, we put him on IR. That will free up his roster spot for a player who cares.
He has no value to the Redskins. Jack described the play well. Joe Bugel admitted the problem to Sonnie and George on Monday night. We cannot trade him for anything because no one would want to take on his contract or his attitude. And, based on what he's produced with the Redskins, I question whether he will ever earn more than the minimum.
The man has taken Snyder's money and retired.

SCSF & E in VB, re: that Tank Johnson to Dallas rumor ... that's what I mean by incoherence about how suspensions work. When I heard about the rumor, I heard that Johnson could be considered currently to be serving his suspension (even though no longer on the Bears' roster). If that's true, is it b/c he's a first time offender? Not offender of the substance abuse policy? It all makes me wonder b/c I've heard different things about Falcon's reasoning for keeping Vick on the 53 man roster.

My $.02 on Lloyd:
1. This is not a receivers' offense. BL's success in SF came in a pass-happy system where there were a lot of balls to go around. Skins have 20 pass plays per game? #3 receiver is going to get 1, maybe 2 opportunities.
2. Last year Brunell did not look his way, always favoring his safetynet Moss, with the exception of one tremendous 40+ yard diving reception on the 1 yd line (forget which game). His best play of the year, still no TD.
3. Apparently this guy exhibits amazing skils in practice. He's easily capable of a 2-TD 100+ yard game, and then we have a #2 controversy.
4. He better do something quickly or he's gone. There have been far more productive receivers in recent years who Gibbs let go (Coles, Gardner, even McCants, and that kid from Florida whats-his-name).

Redskins at Eagles
This is a key divisional game in an NFC East race that should be tight all season long. The Redskins got by Miami 16-13 in Week 1 and the Eagles lost at Green Bay by the same 16-13 score. Neither team is very explosive on offense but both play well enough on defense to stay in the game. Philadelphia needs a better passing day from Donovan McNabb while Washington needs more consistency from young QB Jason Campbell. Still, this game will likely come down to which team does a better job of running the football and controlling the clock.

Much as I hate to admit it, we need Brandon Lloyd. It is a long season in the most physical division in football. Santana Moss is great but chances are his hamstrings, which he often struggles with, will limit him in a game or two this year. Randel El is tough as they come, but he is a little guy and returns punts, so he could get popped at any moment. I think Reche Caldwell is a good pick up but chances are, due to injuries if nothing else, Lloyd will get some starts at No. 2 and No. 3 this year. Everyone loves james Thrash, but he cant stretch the field to get Santana and Randel El some room to work underneath.

Mike H. is right. Santana is fragile and AEL is no bruiser. It wasn't long ago that BL was the skins #1 receiver when Moss was out last season (notably in Campbell's first game when BL let that opening bomb slide through his fingers). Oh so close.
Also, jmo, but from the end-zone camera it looked like the BL interception was thrown too far outside, given that BL had inside position on the db and the safety wasn't anywhere in the area. If Campbell leads BL a bit more inside the play goes for 6. jmho, but there's obviously a lack of chemistry between QB and Receiver,

"Richochet" Caldwell.
HaHa. I like it.
Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 12, 2007 3:51 PM
Key note from Rich's blog:
"A friend of mine from San Diego told me that he was called "Ricochet" when he was with the Chargers in honor of his propensity for having passes bounce off of his hands, chest, and other areas of his body.
It's hard to get worked up over this move one way or the other. I would seem that Caldwell will push Brandon Lloyd for playing time as soon as the former learns Al Saunders' massive playbook. Of course, given his habit of running wrong patterns from time to time we don't really know how much of the playbook Lloyd knows.

rumor has it that the skins FO has contacted sfskin of sf of ri. she could become the first female wide receiver in the nfl. unnamed nfl executives think that eventhough sfskin doesn't have any nfl experience or college or highschool and she runs a slower 40 than #85 at 9.95 and her best vertical was 10 inches at the age of 12(in a highschool play) that she would STILL be an upgrade over #85. because of the intangibles she posesses such as the will to compete.
they're also working out another female wr lisa of ri. lisa has the innate ability to see a catchable ball even when it's over/under thrown by "10" yards. eventhough lisa stands only at 5 "4 with 2 inch heels she still is viewed by some nfl execs to be an upgrade to #85.

Dawkins, Reed, and Polamalu never played on a Gregg Williams defense, did they? This ongoing argument is about apples and oranges.
Sean is touted by many (here and elsewhere) as one of the best safeties in the league. Yet, in the Williams' defensive schemes, even the free safety isn't entirely "free". It goes back to the old axiom by Williams that "it isn't about the players, it's about the scheme". (In other words, Williams believes he could plug Nate into the FS position, if necessary.)
Put Sean on a different team where he is allowed to use his skills, and he compares favorably to the others. The problem he has (even now) is he always has to be concerned about 1) "the Williams scheme" (too much thinking, not enough acting and reacting), and 2) the not-so-great talent in front of him, such as shaky CBs and (last year), LBs that couldn't tackle and Arch, who couldn't cover.
More apples and oranges issues to consider as well: Polamalu is basically a SS (monster; rover) who plays in a totally different scheme; Dawkins and Reed play in defenses where the talent in front of them on defense has generally been better or much better than average.
With the improvements on the Skins defense this year and his position change, let's give Sean a few games under his belt before we toss him under the bus.

Technical note on "vast army": while there are in fact only six RI bloggers, through the magic of CGI we'll turn them into a vast army, with war elephants.

Though I know this will appear in the middle of thousands of best movie lines ever, I gotta say I'm liking the postgameheroes site. Lots of analysis with pictures. Educational Xs and Os. That said, I'm guessing they get shut down by the League (or one the networks) for use of photos.

my personal favorite is frankly maam i don't give a damn.
sween, i went there last week and my opinion was the same. and i truely hope they don't get shutdown cuz of the pics. i think the nfl can tell 'em to stop using their pics and they don't have to. just use the numbers...we'll get the pic cuz we've already seen the play...

And looking over at the Sports Illustrated website reminds me of one of my occasional rants:
The ridiculous pomposity of "POWER" rankings.
What, "Dr. Z's NFL rankings" isn't good enough? It has to be "Dr. Z's power rankings"?
Yeesh, world, enough with the pomposity.

TM,
No one threw him under the bus. I'm not sure if you read the two posts worth of discussion about it. I said he hasn't progressed, which he hasn't.
I don't buy the Scheme excuse either. This defense plays alot of Cover 2 and while I will agree that last year he was so busy making tackles that LB's should have been making he still was late to almost every long throw.
I'll stand by my main argument which is that he hasn't improved much since the Rookie ST I saw a few years ago.
Other than that, the discussion has worn out it's welcome with most here so that will be my last post on it. Much of what you said is has merit just not in the context of the larger discussion we were having.
or as a far more intelligent man than me once said:
I am the the Walrus...

speaking of unimproved players. on the postgame show on CSN. ray brown "mistakenly" thought that rogers was a 3rd year players. and when corrected he said "well he plays like a 2nd year guy". he said carlos has no confidence...
