Other Moves

The Skins needed to create an extra roster spot for another move, so they have released Marcus Mason - from what I imagine they really hope he clears waivers so they can put him back on the practice squad because - ... they also released LB Anthony Trucks from the practice squad and WR Burl Toler from the practice squad, giving them an extra squad spot.

The Redskins also signed Justin Geisinger to the practice squad, an OL from Vanderbilt - one of the guys they brought in for a workout today.

so they have released Marcus Mason

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Posted by: dealer | September 11, 2007 4:27 PM

Bummin about Mason. THAT is the gray cloud around the silver lining (which was the outstanding performance of Portis).

Posted by: dcsween | September 11, 2007 4:28 PM

Janson is on fire today with the blogs, well done you bastard.

Posted by: WikiWikiWoo | September 11, 2007 4:28 PM

Another move? So Caldwell takes Jansen's spot and you say this kid from Vandy is on the practice squad...why the need to let Mason go?

The hampsters need more!!

Posted by: Gibby | September 11, 2007 4:28 PM

What is the "another move" that will be upcoming?

Posted by: 4-12 | September 11, 2007 4:28 PM

I really liked what we saw from Marcus Mason in the preseason. Darn. Oh well. Good thing good running backs are a dime a dozen up here.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 11, 2007 4:29 PM

i'm walking over to the 14th street bridge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: dealer | September 11, 2007 4:29 PM

I don't get that.... Who are they signing if they cut Mason... I don't like that move at all!

I'm getting the sense that there might be a little panicking going on at The Park. Bodiford, Boyd, Caldwell, Mason, Trucks, Toler ... that's ALOT of roster moves since the end of the pre-season.

Posted by: dcsween | September 11, 2007 4:32 PM

I thought they'd let Bodiford go before Mason. But I'm glad they see that much in Bodiford.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 11, 2007 4:32 PM

Brandon Lloyd is a cautionary tale about signing a guy just based on his highlight reel, and not considering his body of work.

[Like if I were to get a job writing for WashPo based on the couple of print-worthy blog comments I've put up amid ten months of heavy jibba jabba. (The blind squirrel/nut thing, also the monkey typing Shakespeare thing.)]

Now who in our organization would sign a guy just based on his highlight reel? You, over there, with the bug eyes! No, not you, the other fellow with the bug eyes!

From the intergoogles (maybe this was from the Combine last spring):

Bench press by Titans offensive lineman Justin Geisinger: Max - 600 lbs. and 43 reps of 225 lbs.

Posted by: dcsween | September 11, 2007 4:33 PM

Maybe a vet OLineman on the way in for added depth?

Posted by: 4-12 | September 11, 2007 4:33 PM

Mason was on the active roster, not the practice squad so who is going to take his place? We'll see him in the Pro Bowl for someone else in a couple years.

Posted by: bigfish | September 11, 2007 4:34 PM

I need a Tampax

Posted by: Period | September 11, 2007 4:35 PM

Mason will clear waivers. I think they will go after Jeno James

'SKINS SIGN CALDWELL

Jason La Canfora of the Washington Post reports that the Redskins have signed received Reche Caldwell to a one-year deal.

To create room on the roster for Caldwell, tackle Jon Jansen has been placed on injured reserve.

Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that the Jets and the Vikings were also interested in Caldwell, and that Caldwell believes that the Jets were genuinely interested in him -- and not just trying to get information from him about the Patriots.

I'm getting the sense that there might be a little panicking going on at The Park. Bodiford, Boyd, Caldwell, Mason, Trucks, Toler ... that's ALOT of roster moves since the end of the pre-season.

Posted by: dcsween | September 11, 2007 04:32 PM

I think "panicking" is a bit strong. A lot of teams are shifting around marginal role players and practice squads. People get hurt; people become available.

In the Redskins case, though, they just lost a starter and their experiment with the third WR came up a failure. I think a lot of people were looking for him to "get it." What would you do if you could replace him with Reche Caldwell? That's not panic.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 11, 2007 4:37 PM

Jenna Jamison? Me likey.

Posted by: bigfish | September 11, 2007 4:38 PM

How long before Calwell reads through the 700 page playbook and can actually play?

Posted by: CoSkins | September 11, 2007 04:21 PM

With his eyes, CoSkins, hell... he's already finished!

Posted by: MV Dame | September 11, 2007 04:34 PM

Dang it Dame! You took my one liner! Oh well. Be prepared to be 0-3. Hail to the Victors!

Posted by: 4th | September 11, 2007 4:39 PM

If the Gints pick up Mason I am going to puke.

Posted by: Daddy-O | September 11, 2007 4:40 PM

I'd love to see them cut the receiver and sign Gabriel, then get another vet olineman for depth with the open spot.

Posted by: Jack | September 11, 2007 4:41 PM

MV Dame - Also this will be the begining of the 3 or 4 year battle between Mallet and Clausen. Did you see them play in the US Army High School All Star Game a few months back? Mallet got the best of Clausen in that one too....

Posted by: 4th | September 11, 2007 4:41 PM

Jack - ITA

We can't cut Lloyd. What are not playing what IFs in the reg season. Only offseason.........

Posted by: 4th | September 11, 2007 4:43 PM

Jack, Your last comment ranks up in the top 3 dumbest post you have ever made. Well Done Sir.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 11, 2007 4:44 PM

Daddy-O, that was MY thought too! Not that I think Mason could be ready to start right away, but I think with the Giants, he COULD start right away. Jacobs, OUT. Droughns, fizzle. Webb, maybe saves Coughlin's career. Why WOULDN'T they grab Mason?

Also, still seems panicky to me. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop ... to see who they opened up the regular roster spot for -- another WR or a CB perhaps? Probably another O-lineman.

Banana Hammock

Posted by: Is That Wrong? | September 11, 2007 4:46 PM

Come on, Sween. They cut a rookie who hasn't played a down and was inactive last weekend and they cut two guys from the practice squad. If this is "panic" I'm your Auntie Emily.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 11, 2007 4:48 PM

I think that you guys are perhaps overstating the abilities of Mason. I mean, i liked the kid and was glad he made the team but It's not like anyone was confusing him for LT or anything.

Posted by: Skinz | September 11, 2007 4:50 PM

The other roster spot is for me. Me and the Danny are working out the numbers. Should be around 30 mil guaranteed over 3 years. Of course I can't play for the first year but he's going to pay me anyway.

When this is done I can make it rain on Cooley's fiance!

Posted by: Pacman Jones | September 11, 2007 4:51 PM

why not? we just cut people, the browns just traded their starting qb, why can't we cut an underachieving, lazy, locker room cancer of a wide receiver who recorded the worst statistical season in the modern era for WR? Would we really be risking anything 4th?

Posted by: Jack | September 11, 2007 4:51 PM

'Skins can't cut Lloyd this year because it would be too big a hit on the salary cap. Best case scenario is that he cuts himself shaving and the 'Skins put him on IR, freeing a roster spot for a player who actually gives a damn.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 11, 2007 4:52 PM

I'd love to see them cut the receiver and sign Gabriel, then get another vet olineman for depth with the open spot.

Posted by: Jack | September 11, 2007 04:41 PM

Just when I thought you couldn't get any dumber.....try paying attention or doing some research.

Again, Jack, follow on this one, you can't cut LLoyd, his salary and bonuses would be accelerated, thus cap suicide.

Posted by: k Squared | September 11, 2007 4:52 PM

talent eval,

What did you mean by this: "What he did was too obvious to everyone. Hell, even I saw it"

Posted by: Joe in Raleigh | September 11, 2007 4:53 PM

That's so wrong, Lloyds cap number is really not bad, its like 1.5 mil, that could be taken this year.

Posted by: Jack | September 11, 2007 4:53 PM

beep beep

Posted by: Anonymous | September 11, 2007 4:54 PM

Joe,

He quit on the route, didn't fight for the ball, and he didn't make the slightest effort to tackle the guy who intercepted the ball. They showed it on replay and it was obvious to everyone -- George and Sonnie asked Bugel about it last night and he said "That can't happen" or something to that effect. It was just bizarre and I can't imagine any talent evaluator in the league would think that he deserves another chance.

Posted by: talent evaluator | September 11, 2007 4:56 PM

I never said "panic" ... I said "panicky."

[I'm willing to back off this point, but stuck with it for a few minutes b/c some recent hater balked at peeps posting then not defending when challenged.]

Panicky, panicky, panicky! OK, now let's hope they pick up some solid special teamer.

Wade to Start At Right Tackle
By Gary Fitzgerald
Redskins.com
September 11, 2007

Todd Wade will take over at right tackle for Jon Jansen.
Head coach Joe Gibbs made the announcement during the "Joe Gibbs Show" on Redskins Radio with Larry Michael and Bram Weinstein.

The team considered starting undrafted rookie Stephon Heyer after he impressed as a replacement for Jansen in Sunday's game against Miami.

Redskins' 2007 Salary Cap Situation
Last updated: September 2, 2007

$3.211m under the Skins adj cap of $109.656m.

after the finalising of the final roster.

And by the way, since after June 1st, his hit wouldn't come until next year, and do we all really think he'll be here next year.

Posted by: Jack | September 11, 2007 5:02 PM

True Jack however, if we release him next year the hit comes in 2009. Are you tracking now Dufus?!

thanks. I was at FedEx for this one and didn't see the replay. You have to figure after that, he'll be shown the LaVar seat.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 11, 2007 5:15 PM

I played Mason 3 years straight in high school, and from the first TD run he made on us I knew he'd be big time. I hope he stays with the Skins on the practice squad, but at the same time if he gets picked up and is active on another roster, I'll be happy for him - he deserves it.

Posted by: skins32 | September 11, 2007 5:21 PM

Why is Steve Czaban pushing this conspiracy theory that Springs didn't play because of a vendetta by Snyder? Unless he has proof, then he should'nt float that turd. That's irresponsible, but what else is new. Even if that's the case, you can't say it without backup.
