Randy To Have Surgery Wed.
Not looking good for Thomas. Gibbs says it's a significant enough tear of the triceps to need surgery. They won't know the exactly length of his absnece until after the procedure, but it's certainly looking long-term if not season ending.
Gibbs says that Fabini will be the starter for now. I hear they are bringing in at least 3 linemen. Vincent and Rick DeMulling - former Lion and Colt - are two of them, league sources said. The other may be Zach Pillar - do not have that confirmed at all but they did flirt with him this offseason - but they definitely told people they were looking for veteran guys with starting experience.
May the best man win.

Fabini is a tackle. Pucillo is a guard.

Hey Jasno--no Tuesday Morning H-Back?????
Hopefully they can bring someone in this week and if they feel they are a better player than Fabini--then they will have the bye week to prepare them for the Lions. I did think Fabini and Wade asserted themselves pretty well last night.
Posted by: PSUAsh | September 18, 2007 5:40 PM
Who is Heyer going to room with on the road now?
Posted by: periculum | September 18, 2007 5:40 PM
Did Vincent play with Rabach? Do they have any chemistry there?
Maybe we're good with ex Ravens the way we're good with Jetskins. Kendall and Thomas, meet Rabach and Vincent.
Hail.
Posted by: Bryan | September 18, 2007 5:41 PM
Wade is a starting tackle. Fabini used to be a starting tackle. They need a guard. Fabini was good on pass protection after the initial gaffe. Not so good on the rush.
Posted by: periculum | September 18, 2007 5:41 PM
sure looked like fabini was a guard there last night, percolator. but hey, priest is a wr, right.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 18, 2007 5:41 PM
From Jansen to Wade is a modest change. Jansen was no longer Pro Bowl level, may even have been our weakest starter at the start of the season ... which is also a compliment to the other guys on the line. Wade is certainly starting material.
From Thomas to Fabinin is a huge change ... Thomas may have been our best lineman. This one really hurts. Glad the Skins front office did a lot of things right in the offseason and got a little cap room. It may be a difference maker. See who comes in and how they play. Or hope Fabini is an overachiever ... because this is his shot.

Best wishes to Randy Thomas, couple of tough injuries in recent years

I would feel a LOT worse about this situation but for Joseph Aloysius Bugel. He can turn these lemons into lemonade. Yes he can.
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 18, 2007 5:44 PM
Nate, Doc Walker was saying the same thing this morning.....that if the player has the talent, desire, and work ethic, Buges can work with him.
Posted by: Lisa | September 18, 2007 5:50 PM
Aloysius . . . Seriously?
Posted by: stevie in gp | September 18, 2007 5:52 PM
Fabini is a stop gap measure. He was rough in pre-season. We need a real Hog.
Buges is good, but he can't change a boot into a banana.
Posted by: Stumped | September 18, 2007 5:54 PM
I am hoping Fabini can step it up, I didn't really notice any kind of problems when he was in there last night.
And I know this has been talked about, but it is my first chance to post. Carlos Rogers was great last night, dare I say it was his break through game. A Monday Night coming out party!!

I'd like that order "super pleased". With cackle.
Posted by: 4-12 | September 18, 2007 5:58 PM
Offensive line dynamics are interesting. I think an O-line is measured best by looking at its weakest link. A great tackle next to a mediocre guard isn't nearly as good as a good tackle playing next to a good guard. I refined it a little bit for the best way to look at a line against a specific opponent. Look at each matchup and the matchup where the o-lineman is the weakest compared to the d lineman he is to block is the issue.
On opening day, the Skins had no obvious weak link. And with Wade filling in for Jansen, still no obvious weak link. So no defensive line could overwhelm the Skins without the very best lineman in the biz. Go back to the playoffs without Thomas a couple years ago ... RG was the weak link that stalled the offense.
Now the o-line depth that I and many others worried about ... and wondered why we didn't draft for ... is showing up. We now have a genuine weak link and a strong DT can exploit it. Lets hope the front office ... which has made some pretty solid moves this offseason, comes thru. Or that we have someone on the roster who is much more than we imagined.

Gutted that Randy is hurt. He and Samuels are our best lineman and this definitely hurts more than losing Jansen. I'd worry about going with Fabini for the rest of the season but I don't want us to bring someone in just for the sake of it. They have to be better than Fabini.
Just gutted we've lost Randy.
Anyway - we're 2 and Oh!!! HTTR

Homer,
You're missing the point, with Miss SC and Priest Holmes starting in the depth charge, there's no way that maps can help the kids in Iraq, no matter what the FO does, so Buges makes concrete boots for Lloyd, Brandon and is super-pleased with Reche. You're such a Homer Homer. So Heyers to ya.
Posted by: Stumped | September 18, 2007 6:06 PM
I'm still remaining optimistic about this whole thing. I've heard that guard is the easiest position to learn/fill. I guess we're saving Heyer just in case Samuels or Wade goes down.

I don't think we need "Tuesday Morning H-Back" this week. It seems like the blogging group has covered most of the points completely and concisely. Let Jasno have the day off, rather than listen to another week of:
1) League insiders tell me that having Heyer on the bench is a severe liability.
2) Jason Campbell made too many mistakes.
3) Portis had another sub-par game after sitting out the pre-season.
4) The O-Line isn't deep enough and the D-Line isn't good enough, with too many old guys.
5) The Redskins would be better if they had more draft picks.
6) The Ravens have a superior FO.
Been there; done that. Thanks, but no thanks!

John Riggins show is currently being broadcast.
Whoever is with John now; Kevin maybe?
Not sure, but he just said, "You are not gonna say it, but I believe we can go 16-0".
I waited for him to laugh or reveal his sarcasm, but he did not. Riggo then said, "Well, I'll let you say it" but of course Riggo knew he was absolutely ignorant and caught up in the emotion to suggest this team could go 16-0.
Folks look at the margin of victory in the two Patriots wins and then our two wins.
We could be 0-2 folks...

I do like the idea of Whitticker though, when we cut him I sort of got the impression it was only a temporary thing. I think initially he was Plan B if the Wade/Guard experiment failed. Then he had to go and get injured.
The advantage with him is that he knows the offense, and we know Buges likes him.

Just a thought on the upcoming Patriots game, for all you doomsayers -
Remember how bad the Skins sucked last year and then how well they played at New Orleans?
I'm not saying - just don't put the game in the loss column before it's played. Gibbs and his staff know how to game plan. He doesn't have three rings because he was just lucky.
Posted by: TM | September 18, 2007 6:34 PM
Redskins Ray - What's your point? The Patriots give up more points per game than we do? So we've got a better defense than the Pats? It's good to see you being positive!
Posted by: kost52 | September 18, 2007 6:34 PM

Maybe it's early, but I'm thinking that the Redskins have some positions to zero in on next year's draft. My predictions:
1st- O-Lineman, whoever is best available
2nd- WR, James Hardy, Indiana (or another tall deep threat)
3rd- FB, Owen Schimitt, West Virginia (a bruising blocker and definitely a possible heir to Mike "The Mack" Sellers down the road)
4th- taken by Kendall, right?
5th- D-Lineman, whoever is best available
6th- QB, best available
7th- O-Lineman, whoever is best available
I'm calling for OL, WR, FB, DL, QB, and OL, with undrafted signings of WRs, OL, and DL. Secondary looks good for now, maybe some free agency depth will do nicely.
Yes, this is all silly. Yes, I'm doing this for fun and to kill time until we start gabbing about the Gints. Anyone else wanna take part in the charada?
Posted by: TDawg | September 18, 2007 6:36 PM
It's a long season. They will probably bring back Whittiker closer to the bye week or thereafter. He can learn more as a backup or on the P.S. and be ready in case another guard goes down later.

If someone thinks they can beat the Skins, they should have to prove it. The won't get the benefit of the doubt from me.
If I'm a player, should I go into that game thinking, oh, we're bound to lose that one, because the Patriot beat everybody...No!
Was it over when the Germand bombed Pearl Harbor? No. It's not over till we say its over.

Hello Kost52
Not trying to be negative...
I did finish w/ HTTR!
My point was Riggo saw how ignorant it was for the other guy to suggest we could go 16-0!
And it is not negative to say we could easily be 0-2, because we could be.
But there is no way the Pats could be even 1-1 after their first two games.
Of course I want the Skins to win it all, but I am not a naive simpleton that believes and gets on Radio at 2-0 and says we could go 16-0!
You are a reactionary who knee jerked to the other extreme declaring I am negative.
Not at all, and I am hoping we are back!

Diesel - Deion has been in trouble also. A mans gotta fish though.
Posted by: bigfish | September 18, 2007 6:47 PM
Sorry, TDawg - it will look like this:
1st round: CB or DE (best available at the time; need one of each in first two rounds)
2nd round: CB or DE
3rd round: Offensive Line (highest need position)
4th round - no pick (Duckett trade; Kendall pick will be in 2009)
5th, 6th, 7th rounds - more O- and D-Line depth, maybe a project quarterback
Backup QB need is less critical, as there will be lots of available FA QBs (McCown, McNown, McClown, McFrown) that no one wants next year, as young QBs take starting and backup slots elsewhere (Oakland, KC, Atlanta, Tampa, etc.). Redskins can get a project QB late or undrafted because JC will be around a very log time, assuming he stays healthy.

Ron Mexico will be playing in the Cowboys Prison Developmental League next year.
Posted by: Anonymous | September 18, 2007 6:55 PM
TM,
Your order is more probable than mine; I'm definitely wishful thinking, but I think that we should be shooting for a stud possesion receiver in the 2nd or 3rd round to solidify our receiving corps. I think it could go a long way.
Definitely a stud FB to start developing into the next Sellers is also a smart move, IMHO.
But I have to say-- we need o-line depth badly... hopefully we'll pick up some depth in free agency (on both sides of the line), but we should try to draft well at those positions and look for Bugel to polish a diamond instead of a turd.
Posted by: TDawg | September 18, 2007 6:55 PM
Something I just realized (food for thought):
The Iggles need a wide receiver. Badly.
We hate one of ours: Lloyd, Brandon, The (supposed) wide receiver.
Does someone smell a 4th rounder next year?
Discuss.
Posted by: TDawg | September 18, 2007 6:57 PM
Backup QB is not a draft issue. There will be decent backups available. Even Patrick Ramsey was a decent backup. Culpepper, Leftwich, etc are QB's that have come on the market for cheap. And the two we have now, Brunell and Collins, might be good enough for a while longer. Nope, don't need to draft backup QB project ... even though they did this year. Why, I don't know!!!!
Posted by: AL | September 18, 2007 6:59 PM
Yup, trade Lloyd to Philly for a 4th round pick. I think the 76ers would agree to that ... just not the Eagles ....
Posted by: AL | September 18, 2007 7:01 PM
The problem is that we don't have a 4th rounder next year to give to the Eagles to take Lloyd.

But c'mon though-- given how cruddy they're receivers are now, you don't think they'd bite if we dangled Lloyd, especially as a conference foe?

From Jason's story, which will go up shortly:
"It's got to be surgically repaired," Gibbs said, adding that the triceps "came off the bone." Bubba Tyer, Washington's director of sports medicine, said the injury is significant and that Thomas will have to wear a cast or splint on his arm for at least six weeks.

TDawg...I would be paranoid of trading a player with intimate knowledge of the offensive playbook to a division rival (I said knowledge, not ability to execute on the field).
And Receiver, The, in no way justifies a 4th rounder.
Posted by: SCSkinsFan | September 18, 2007 7:10 PM
TD -
Rounds 3 & 4 are good spots to pick up quality O-Line prospects, so that is where I expect they will be targeted. If all the other needs were equal, they might go for a 1st round O-Lineman, but CB and DE are the highest needs. (DE is sorely lacking - Daniels is done after this year; starting rotation CBs are getting old as a group except for Carlos)
As for WR, the Lloyd signing was a good indicator; WR is a tough spot to draft and get a guaranteed return. I expect the Skins to get another WR via FA next year, much like the Pats did this year with Moss and Welker and company. Getting rid of Lloyd after the season as a post-June 1 designated cut will move a chunk of his cap hit into 2009, leaving cap room to sign a FA WR.
Finding real talent in the draft is the key. The Redskins should go back to doing their own private scouting and stop depending on the scouting combine. What the Ravens do reliably well with their scouting group is find higher quality in the middle and late rounds. The Skins need to do that better to help with the depth issues at O-Line and D-Line.

TM - The Redskin do bring in prospects and work them out in Ashburn. Every team does it the same. There are rules to scouting in the NFL. The Ravens can't/aren't allowed to do anything that we can't/don't do.

Posted by: bigfish | September 18, 2007 7:17 PM
Redskins Ray - Fair enough you gave a HTTR.
My point is that we've played 2 games, the best possible result we can get is to be 2-0, which is what we are. You don't get bonus points for big scores, or big margins, I'm pretty sure they don't even count when it comes to tie breakers.
If you're saying we still need to improve to be able to compete with the powerhouse teams, I agree. But I think it's silly to say we COULD easily be 0-2, we ARE 2-0.

Posted by: TDawg | September 18, 2007 7:18 PM
2-0! Woo! I can't believe I had to actually work today and teach and stuff. But made it a nice day to walk in after a good game.
I have few original thoughts to add to everything that's been said but I'm gonna add them anyway.
1. Dead horse - ESPN coverage sucks. Jaws is the best guy around to break down the game and really let the average fan understand. But last night holy shti! I know I'm a homer but here's the thing it was a decent game and some good stuff was happening so why not cover it? The 3rd quarter was a lost quarter in terms of viewing. Does showing replays cost extra $ cause I've noticed when we have the Fox Z team for tv coverage frequently things aren't replayed. Will give props to TK who did that awesome hommage to St. Joe at the beginning and hit home that what he did in the 80s he did without a Montana or Elway or Aikman.
2. I said this last night I'm going to repeat. Soups has a remarkable arm and touch. When he throws it well he puts in a place only our guys can get. Haven't seen it in the burgundy and gold since Rypien. Brunell had the long ball a few times (Dallas game!) but it was labored and to some extent hurled. Then his dinks and dunks looked pedestrian. I know I'm so biased but watching Soups gave me goose bumps. Banks at SI.com and Pasquerlli and Wise and others all noted him too which leads me to believe I'm not looking through the Kool Aid glass.
3. Double Move had a good game. Totally agree. Looked like he was playing with confidence and with his head on rather than trying to play catch up.
4. Call to Moss for TD was awesome! Why? Cause it meant we were going for the kill. Cause it meant the coaching staff had the confidence in the 4th that they didn't have at the end of the first half with the initial FG call. We were up and up by enough that it showed confidence in our defense and why not go for the kill shot?
5. Hear hear! Giants is absolutely a trap game. And I think St. Joe knows it. His presser said it all. He's obviously thrilled at the outcomes but sees there is a lot of work to do. No division game is a gimme. Remember when Cowpaddies when 1-15? Remember who was the 1?
But I'll tell you what for the first time in years I feel honest to gawd excited and good and for lack of a better word solid about the Skins.
2006 - I felt vaguely surprised when we made the playoffs and didn't really think we'd go all the way.
Marty ball - felt okay but the sinking feeling never went away.
Norville's playoff - again we made? Yay! Wait really we made it?
Haven't felt this way about this team since 1991 when we ended teh 90 season with 5 wins and no one saw us coming.
Okay enough I ramble because I am so happy.
Posted by: sfskin | September 18, 2007 7:19 PM
Oh and hey Insiders a big thank you to all of youse guys.
A#1 "watching" the game with you is super fun

Probably already said in an earlier post, but I liked seeing the WOW (week over week) improvement. Really, other than avoiding key injuries, there is no other means by which to judge a team: Do they get better through the season? If every week brings improvement, thenwe have a good chance in the post-season. Don't forget there have been many teams that come out of the gate like gangbusters only to peter out as the season goes along because everybody else improves and they remain stagnant.
We improved WOW. That is good. It's what good teams do. And scouting seems to have players to plug into an injured O-line, I hope.
Posted by: Neil in Durango | September 18, 2007 7:23 PM
I think the Gints game is a possible trap too! I want to be 6-0 before we start that stretch where we play the Jets, Pats, Eagles, Cowgirls (I think that's the right order) 3 of 4 of those are away. I'll take 5-1, but I wanna be 6-0. All of the teams we play before that stretch are beatable, but you can never predict the nfl and that's what makes it awesome!!! HAIL!!!

The Lions stink. I watched a bunch of their game this weekend, and they are horrible. The Cardinals are scary because, as we all know, Russ Grimm knows where all of St. Joe's bodies are buried.
Actually, come to think of it, maybe they could suit Russ up for Randy Thomas...
I think the Packers are absolutely a legitimate team. Favre's swan song? Yikes.

I was very pleased to see them get the ball to Sellers the past 2 games, that was something they did not try to do on a consistent basis last year. I think that they should try to get him involved in the passing game for short yardage more though, he will beat up on anybody he meets in the open field.

A woman sitting in an Adelaide restaurant suddenly began to cough.
After a few seconds it became apparent that she was in real distress and
two locals, Brian and Bruce who were sitting at the next table, turned to
look at her.
"Can ya swaller ?" asked Bruce.
The woman signalled NO !!, desperately shaking her head.
"Can ya breave ?" asked Brian.
The woman shook her head NO !!.
With that, Bruce calmly walked behind her, lifted up the back of her dress,
yanked down her knickers and ran his tongue up and down the crack of her bum.
This shocked the woman into such violent spasm that the obstruction flew
out of her mouth. This was followed by an almighty scream and she began to
breathe again.
Bruce swaggered back to his table and took a deep swig of his beer.
Brian, in total admiration of his mate, said: "Ya know Bruce, I've heard
of that bloody Hind-Lick Manoeuvre but that's the first time I've ever seen
somebody do it !"

bigfish -
The scouting combine that the Redskins subscribe to is employed by around 25 teams, so all teams get the same reports on college prospects, whether those reports are accurate or not. The combine tends to focus on the large 1-A "football factory" schools as well as "name" players, and often miss the hidden gems who are out there playing for smaller 1-A schools and the other NCAA divisions.
The Ravens and several other teams do not subscribe to the combine and do all of their own scouting. They scout specifically according to the needs of their own organization and see every player they are interested in personally, generally months before the February combine get-together in Indianapolis. This independent scouting process has yielded many good players who were not on the combine's radar.
The Redskins could do this also, but choose to subscribe to the scouting combine instead. The result is mid- and late-round draft choice mediocrity, with most of the choices being 2nd and 3rd round players from big schools.

Thanks for the explanation there TM. I am not familiar with this "combine". Sounds like team employed scouts to me. I think the bigger problem here is that the Ravens have Ozzie and we have bug eyes and Napolean.

Anyone know a team that needs a decent cornerback?
The Cowboys had to release a player in order to sign Tank Johnson and make the cut-off 53 man roster. Once Johnson is on the roster for 24 hours, he goes on the suspended/inactive list, and the Cowboys can sign someone else.
The Cowboys cut cornerback Nate Jones. Jones is the dime cornerback for the Cowboys and saw significant action in both games 1 and 2.
If a team needed a decent corner, or just wanted to wreck the Cowboys dime package, they'd pick up Jones in the next 24. After that, chances are, he'll be re-signed by the Cowboys.
After last week's performance, couldn't Cincinnati use some new blood in their secondary?
Posted by: mugamack | September 18, 2007 8:06 PM
Is Vinny working for the Cowboys now or something? First of all Tank can't practice or play until week 10. Second - He has never played nose tackle in a 3-4 defense and may lack the size to do so. Oh well - maybe their defense will suck it up even more.

P Diddy - I want to take this opportunity to commend and praise you for your recent posts. Ever since those anon's blasted you a week ago, you have been smart, witty, knowldegable and back to basics (football). Maybe it's a coincidence, but I just wanted to point this out. Thanks.

I mentioned it last night, but are any of you guys interested in Antonio Bryant now that his ban has been lifted?

Did anyone see Gibbs hugging Carlos Rogers after the game last night? Priceless.
Posted by: Lisa | September 18, 2007 8:19 PM
kost - Bryant may be a good pick up for someone else but with the recent injuries I'm not sure that we should exhaust our cap room on yet another receiver. Plus the whole ex-49er receiver thing has left a bad taste in our mouths. I think he may have a shot at doing well for another team though.
Posted by: bigfish | September 18, 2007 8:20 PM
If Carlos has another game like he did last night then we will have to give him a new nickname.

Skipped salsa class to nurse my hangover, and that got me thinking for a sec...
...Jason Campbell vs. Tony Romo for the next 10 years. Pretty cool, huh? Consistency at QB and head coach are critical if the NFC East is going to make a resurgence. I don't expect St. Joe to coach beyond his contract, and Wade Philips looks like a short-timer. Coughlin is good as gone. Andy Reid may coach up there forever, but McNabb appears to be on the decline.
But JC vs. Romo? That's just awesome for football fans...
Posted by: P Diddy | September 18, 2007 9:10 PM
Has anyone considered posting an "urban dictionary" of RI terms (SJK, Jasno, ITA, The Receiver, Area 51, etc)?
Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 18, 2007 9:12 PM
Think Romo will last for ten years?
Romo=Aikman; L2=Lavar
Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 18, 2007 9:14 PM
The Giants are a "trap". They are NFC east rivals. They aren't going to play the patsy when they get to FEDEX.
At this point forget 6-0. Try to find a way to get to 3-0 with a bye week coming up. Then its time to figure out what to do with O-line for the rest of the season. To work out the wide receiver issue. Thrash was lining up for Brandon for the most part. He got in when Randle El got cramps. They need to decide what they are going to do. The rotation between Portis and Betts really isn't working. Neither is getting into a "groove" or rhythm. At times Sellers looked better going up the middle.
On defense they have not been blitzing. They've been playing more of a Petitbone defense. Wonder if Gibbs is behind that? He did say he would be working on defense this offseason? Rocky Mac and Fletcher have looked good. Time to work Godfrey in for Washington until his elbow heals. Safeties are still tentative at times. Corners are still getting beat ... with the exception of Springs. If they had a real receiver out there in Philly things might have been different. Detroit is going to come in after the bye week with a 4 wide receiver set featuring Roy Williams and Calvin Johnson speed burning on the outside and Furrey and McDonald working the middle. Got to be the best receiving corps in the league. Kitna must be in heaven slinging balls to them.
JACK, let's see wait to see what happens in the Detroit game before you start touting DE's in the draft. Let's see how your "deep corners" do in that game. Springs will only be able to cover one and that will likely be Williams. McDonald and Furrey will be catching most of the balls. Smoot and Macklin covering. Then Carlos gets Johnson. Detroit is going to be a real test for the defense. Millen finally has a really dangerous offense up there. Given the number of times Gibbs and the Skins have humiliated the Lions I am sure they will be itching for some revenge.

I love football...I hope Romo is there for a long, long time. Games like last night's are just awesome. Games like last year's make me want to vomit. Cowboys vs. 'Skins playing meaningful games every year just like the old days, that's the kind of stuff we fans drool over.
That said, I hope L2 pounds him into the turf. The hit last night to win the game was unreal.

P Diddy - JC vs. Romo - never really thought about it like that but you're right! A continuing battle between two quarterbacks about the same age in the same division. Not to mention the rivalry that already exists between the two teams. Could be epic!
Posted by: mmok | September 18, 2007 9:19 PM
It'll be interesting to compare the long term contracts these guys get, how the negotiations go, whether the franchise tag is involved for either.
If Romo throws 4 TDs against the Bears, I hope we send him to the drive-thru lane with a check for about $20 mil.

And Jack if da Reaper and Landry aren't looking Detroit's premier tight end Dan Campbell could split the seams ....
Let's see what happens in that game. But first they have to get to through the Giants and regroup as if they are 0-3 at they bye. Because offensively they aren't hitting on even half the cylinders they need and defensively they still have some kinks to work out.
Posted by: periculum | September 18, 2007 9:19 PM
I agree diddy. I hope Romo is around for a while too. Although not as good as JC. And I would like to see L2 or Reaper put him out just like Lavar did to Aikman. Is that too much (cruel) to ask?

So much for "America's Team" when they sign criminals. I guess Vick will play in Dallas too in a few years.
Posted by: Redskinrex | September 18, 2007 9:22 PM
It's a bit too early to gloat, but I think some early props are due:
1) Give Joe Bugel credit. He has coached up the O-line reserves well.
2) Give Joe Gibbs credit. They said the game has passed him by, but we have established our identity as a smashmouth, run first team, and we even see shades of 91' with the deep ball
3) Where are all the "Grilliams" comments? Some of you practically ran him out of town
4) I haven't heard one comment about Al Saunders' 700 page playbook. Seems like they know it now.
5) Finally, we have to give the FO some credit. They found some key reserves for cheap. They found a gem in Heyer. They locked up Cooley and Sellars. They went young on defense and they found a gem in the late rounds in H.B. Blades. They bought in a field general in London Fletcher and seem to have a very good safety for years to come in Landry...Can they get some love?
I know it's only 2 games, but it seems as if this organization is turning the corner, although Brandon Lloyd is the last of the mistakes we need to correct.

They went "vet" instead of rookie, as in the past, for OL backups. Wade is a bonafide starting tackle. Exceptions are Heyer and Lefotu on the practice squad. Notice no one mentioned moving him up. Must be something Buges sees in that 3rd year pure guard.
The big difference (except for Lloyd) character guys. Gibbs kind of character guys starting at QB. Character guys like Bodiford and Boyd picked up just before the 1st game. That is leadership.

I think Lloyd is due a breakout game. Also, I think the argument that we need a "big" receiver is overrated. Smaller receivers are more elusive, and many of those first downs we got yesterday came from their ability to duck and break tackles.

It wasn't good enough that he had to call Gibbs decision making "inexplicable" in yesterday's game recap article, but today he writes yet another article going after Gibbs for the confusion at the end of the first half. And the idiot La Canfora gets the sequence of events wrong:
"While Gibbs and special teams coach Danny Smith tried to get it together, Reid inexplicably called a timeout that bailed out the Redskins.
Given time to think, Gibbs decided to go for a touchdown. After consecutive false starts by backup guard Jason Fabini backed up the Redskins to the 16-yard line, quarterback Jason Campbell completed a momentum-changing touchdown pass to tight end Chris Cooley."
Actually, no, the consecutive false starts did NOT occur after Reid's timeout. Fire La Canfora already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DTC Shout outs- (The "U" products had a good night in my book) As Madden says "Winning is the best deoderant".
(1, not a U) Fletcher, getting in some hits AND pressure up the middle in terms of Blitz pass rush (that has been missing for years). Knocked the snot out of the ball carrier couple times in Red Zone. Plays BIG!
(U2) Sean Tay. Big hit on Iggle receiver, run support, and SACK on Nabby.
(U3) Portis. Strong running, wicked hit on Iggles DB after the pick. (2) TD's.
(U4)McIntosh- Perhaps a better Pro than college player. The guy is all over the place, sacking people, making tackles, good speed.
(U5)Santana Moss- A bunch of good sideline routes for first downs. Great downfield blocking for Soupy (dismantled a DB) one time.
(6 not a U) Sellars. This dude was fired up AGAIN. I say he should lead the team out of the tunnel against Gints. The dude straight runs people over. Sweet first dwon pick up with extra effort had Bugel belly bumping fellow space Cowboys on the sideline.
7- SWISS HAM- Professional. Nuff said.
Honorable mentions- Cooley (TD, gutsy first down conversion) Wade, Fabini, Randle El, Betts, Soupy, Rogers (good run support).
ALl in ALL, the Skins wanted it more than the Iggles. They played physical, professional, poised football. Any other team would be drawing accolades from the "experts" for such a methodical road win. Keep the chip right on the shoulder where it belongs.

We need us a Giants fan to serve as this week's Redcoat (week 1) or Eaglesfan Adam (week 2), the guy we can be nice to and playfully banter with so we can prepare him for the big ripping-his-heart-out sacrifice on Sunday.
Any takers?

Sheesh Barno no need to yell. I am happy to stand corrected but wasn't it the '90 season where we were written off and then we won the last 5 games, getting better each one (Gibbs' famous Decembers) and took a lot of so called experts by surprise and then we picked up right where we left off in '91. It was one of those season I think where only 11 wins or better got you into the playoffs (remember those days?)
Am I remembering wrong?

Thanks Lisa, but I thought he said the 72 season uniform.
The old mustard helmet with the "R" was only used for two seasons as I recall. Those were the 70 and 71 seasons.
I was 7 and 8 years old but the Skins were the most important thing to me in life, so I vividly recall the new helmet came for the 72 season when they went 11-3 and went to SB VII.
So if it is the 72 season [35 years ago] they are commemorating they will still wear the current helmet.
Thanks Lisa

It prolly is legit. However there is a RI tshirt location as well. Nate in the PDX is the main source to get the link, and the one who usually creates/uploads those shirt ideas.
Some have created, like Bucktown Skins Fan who has considerable skills, these shirts have proceeds that go to NOLA charities when the man, jm 220, takes the $ down there when he volunteers.
Dont have the exact link, but someone will post it following this message.

Cooley on DC101
Did you get a game ball? No
W/o the TD at the end of the half, we dont win - It was all mine, i won the game (j/k)
There were two guys on you? Yep, Dawk was on his back, and he could see the corner. It was his. Had to catch it since he dropped one earlier
Do you get nervous when the ball in the air - No, excited. Looked at JC, "I'll make a play"
Thees said it was a great throw - Yep, perfect. Moveing back helped. Fabini said the extra room his FS provided, Cooley owes him a dinner. Jason is doing a great throwing downfield. Would be better if we dont drop 6-7 passes during game.
After the first drop, does JC say anything?
In practice i throw my helmet if it happnes... so they know how I feel about drops. He does not let anything bother him.
JC took hits? Yep, he is bigger than me, so he should be able to take the hits.
How was halftime, celebrate? They were pumped up.
How come you didnt dance like CP? I would need time to practice a dance. ESPN only gave CP a 5 out of 10 on his dance. What do you think they would give me?
Thees talked with us about being 2-0, but peeps say we should have crushed the iggles? Gibbs teams run the ball, not throwing it all over the place. We dont blow out people.
- Great matchup this week. We are 2-0. Last year we were 0-2 and panicking. So it is flip-flopped. Then we have a bye and then 2 non-conference, so they are excited.
What about what McNabb said about race and QB's - He has to realize he is Philly, so any QB will get it there.
He has had his opportunities there, going to a SB - Its hard to say, it is a weird subject. But do you think Brunell has had more criticism than JC? Maybe cause he is old, but he got booed when he came in for JC last year. But you cant take away his feelings. He has done a great job in philly, and it is a tough place to play.
You have been booed at home? Yep, its horrible, especially when you are still trying to win the game, and its the 2nd game, why boo them. It does not help.
When Brunell was booed, did it bother him? At that point it was a joke. We all knew, as did he, and we laughed at him in the huddle. It still bothered him.
Dance suggestions from Callers - After you score. Go pull up the field goal nets, help the guys...

yowsa, The Crickets and HaikuMan rocking!
================================
The RI Insider view:
After starting out 0-1 with an ugly week 1 loss (due largely to the unexpected loss of all-pro QB Nate in the PDX, and a rash of free-agent wire signings that didn't work), this week was a must-win.
And RI came through big. Every phase of our game is clicking--analysis, rants, jokes, haikus, jibba jabba, haiku, links, spelling corrections, etc.
Look at the codification, for instance: this week The Crickets compile a list of RI code, putting together the contributions of a host of RIers. That's professionalism, folks--that's the kind of discipline that wins blog wars and reaches ultimatums.
And of couse this season we've added a new vertical threat to our game, the epic poem.
Shakespeare, Periculum, and yours truly have all added length and a deep threat to RI posts.
It's impossible to really prepare for RI this season. We can just throw too many weapons at you.
J3 hasn't even learned the playbook--when he's on the field for us, look out!
Finally, as for this week: the effort was incredible. Clearly, we just wanted it more than Extreme Skins.
1-1: RI is back! The beast of the east!
Blog power ranking: #!
Posted by: farstriker | September 19, 2007 8:12 AM
Amongst our diverse weaponry are such tactics as . . . redundancy (two instances of "haiku")
All in the service of the ultimatum.
Posted by: farstriker | September 19, 2007 8:22 AM
Wow, so when Cooley says they were laughing in the huddle when Brunell was being booed... were the other ten guys laughing with Brunell or at him?
Posted by: Nate in the PDX | September 19, 2007 8:23 AM
If we are to remain #1, we better go BOGO to achieve the Ultimatum.
Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 19, 2007 8:25 AM
Nate;
Kind of both, he understood why he was booed, and was laughing with the rest, but as he said, the boos still bother him. But he understands the team, not just him, finding the humor.
They are his friends, so they could all laugh about it.

farstriker, Zebra, bless you lads for your excellent work up here. We've got a lot of work to do for the next four days, a ton of work, and I couldn't imagine a better bunch of guys to do it. All our work in the offseason, all the commenting we did through training camp, it's all coming to this.
As dealer suggested, we can stop counting after 100k, after we reach the Ultimatum. That should be incentive enough for everybody to blog their ever-lovin' guts out for the next four days.

I AM WRITING THIS IN CAPS BECAUSE I WANT ALL THE SKINS FANS TO READ THIS. RELAX AND RELISH THAT OUR TEAM IS 2-0 RIGHT NOW. LOSING RANDY THOMAS SUCKS, IT REALLY DOES BUT FABINI DID A NICE JOB STEPPING IN . YES , HE TOOK TWO FALSE STARTS BUT THE CROWD NOISE WAS HUGE AND HE NEEDS TIME TO GEL. HE IS A 10 YEAR VET WITH HIS CAREER COMING TO AN END, HE REALIZES THIS IS HIS CHANCE TO STEP UP AND SHINE. WE ARE GOING TO SIGN ANOTHER GUARD IN FREE AGENCY AND MOST LIKELY IT WILL BE KEYDRICK VINCENT, WHO RABACH KNOWS AND PLAYED WITH. WE NEED FABINI TO HOLD THE POSTION DOWN FOR A COUPLE OF GAMES AND THEN VINCENT WILL BE FAMILIAR WITH THE OFFENCE AND STEP IN. WE MAY NOT EVEN NEED VINCENT, FABINI MIGHT SURPRISE SOME, HE MY BE A FLOP; WHO KNOWS. WE HAVE LOST OUR STAR RIGHT GUARD AND WE WILL MISS HIM, ESPECIALLY ON PULLING PLAYS BUT SOME PEOPLE SAID THE SAME THING ABOUT JANSEN, AND I DON'T RECALL HEARING ANYTHING ABOUT JEVON KEARSE ON MONDAY NIGHT. THE FRONT OFFICE, GIBBS AND BUGEL WILL MAKE SURE THE RIGHT SIDE WILL BE FILLED ADEQUATELY WITH THOMAS TURNING TO COACH FOR VINCENT, FABINI OR WHOMEVER FILLS THAT SPOT. WE WILL STILL RUN TO THE RIGHT SIDE.REMEMBER WADE LOVES RUNNING PLAYS!
WE ARE BRUISED BUT NO BROKEN.

For those who are having an issue with the division of carries between Portis and Betts, back when Clinton was with the Bronco's, he was averaging around 270 carries, and 1500 yards a season. 270 carries over the course of a season breaks down to about 17 carries a game, or there abouts. Right now after 2 games, Portis has 34 carries. There is no point in running Portis into the ground, with Betts backing him up. Use them both 50% of the time, and we'll be HUGELY successful. I'm not saying that Betts and Portis are equals, I'm saying look at Portis's career, when he was getting 1500 yards a season, he was under 300 carries.
Just my .02....

Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 19, 2007 9:26 AM
You want Portis to be healthy for the final 5 games and "playoffs". If that means splitting the load now, great. But in those final games, it's on CP's shoulders.
Posted by: P Diddy | September 19, 2007 9:28 AM
so how many left until Ultimatum. breakdown by day? how about breakdown by regular blogger (this prompts another question)
Posted by: Cindy's boy toy | September 19, 2007 9:28 AM
I hear ya Greg(Boston). Your post sounds like what I was saying on here a couple of days ago. Certainly Clinton Portis is not built to carry the ball 28+ a game. As the season goes along and if Portis can stay healthy, I don't see why he can't have at least 1300 yds. this season. I would like to see him and Betts in at the same time. You can run some crazy misdirection plays at the defense (Portis one way, Betts the other). But what the hell I know? Thats why I sit in a cube for 8 hrs. a day and Joe Gibbs has a bust in Canton.

dc, farstriker -
periculum has quality in addition to quantity. So much better than the random "F whatever" cut and paste posts that stretch from here to forever.

Posted by: P Diddy
P- I can understand why you would say that. Clinton is the featured back, makes good cheddar, and feels he has something to prove, and well all know you are at your best when your playing with that proverbial chip on your shoulder. But with Clinton is more like a boulder. Anyway my point is, if the Skins continue on this path of winning games and beating opponents they're suppose to beat, why come playoff time would you start giving Clinton 70% of the rushing load. I think Betts proved to the world is a capable running back. He is owned in damn near every FFL I participate in. I assume its about 55% Clinton and 45% Betts now. On the other hand if Portis has that one game where he can go off for 150yds. on like 25 carries but not have a run for over 15yds (Thats the kicker) then maybe for the next game you can give him maybe 30, no more than 35. For one game only. As I said a few post ago the ideal number of carries Portis should receive in the game is about 18-22.
Posted by: nex2no1 | September 19, 2007 9:48 AM
Cbt, F chRIs Larry is kind of like blog calesthenics. Among the various F things, its the best. Also a fan of FJK.
Also, I will hold off for a second ... find me a "quality" periculum clip (that doesn't repeat something that has already become blog consensus or is not contradictory of something he's said within the preceding 3-4 days), and let's discuss.
Posted by: dcsween | September 19, 2007 9:49 AM
The problem with the rotation as it is now is that the use Portis first then Betts gets more carries late. They should go the other way around. Portis should get his carries in the second half. Not all of them but i'd go 60-40 Bettes in the first half and 70-30 Portis in the second.
Posted by: Skinz | September 19, 2007 9:51 AM
dcsween, if that's your definition of quality, then are there really ANY quality bloggers on RI?
Posted by: farstriker | September 19, 2007 9:55 AM
BAMF = Bad Ass Mo Fo
Posted by: SMACK | September 19, 2007 9:57 AM
farstriker, normally, I'd say 'touche' but from the get go, I've been an advocate for quality over quantity. The blogcountpushes have definitely reduced the quality of the reading, extended the time necessary to actually keep up, and diminished the stature of the community (e.g., by driving away the really quality posters like the bloggerette Megskin). Jibba jibba (if clever) and good snark are one thing, but actual posts about Skins football SHOULD meet some standard of quality.
Posted by: dcsween | September 19, 2007 10:01 AM
I realize I'm a bit of a newbie, sween, but some of these tomes - though they may be quality, are just mindnumbing to get through.
Given the conversational nature of a blog, I would think shorter posts would be more appropriate.
But - that's just my opinion. And I do have to say, it's very enjoyable here. I appreciate everyone's input.
Yes, even SIGN CHRIS COOLEY. (don't over do it! hahahah)

Posted by: farstriker | September 19, 2007 10:15 AM
I also want to take an opportunity for a shout out to the departed Megskin (see posts from the archives of last season). As a football eye, she had PERFECT vision, esp. on defense. As a writer, she was concise and typically hilarious. In my opinion, she set the tone and gold standard for the blog. There were other posters from since the beginning, but its her absence that inspires me to curse quantity over quality. Stepping off the soapbox (which I believe to be a closing made famous by sfskin).
