Coach Joe Is On The Warpath/Moss Doubtful

Wow, Coach Joe wanted no part of the media today (can't blame him for that) and engaged in some of testy exchanges. Made for good theatre.

Okay, Ill get back to that in a minute. First the news.

Santana did not practice and is listed as doubtful. He didn't rule himself out, but after not practicing all week and just running a few routes Gibbs did not sound like he would play. Said there is a chance Santana could take warmups Sunday and maybe sneak into the active roster, but it sounded remote.

Also, Lloyd was back to practice and Mike Sellers missed most of practice with his heel injury, largely as a precaution.

As for Coach Gibbs, he certainly had his game face on. Any reporter who has been around here more than 30 seconds learned long ago that coach Joe is never going to say much the later you get in the week and people looking for flowery quotes on Friday in particular are barking up the wrong tree.

Today he was downright ornery - and if I'm a Skins fan I'm all in favor of that. He looked like he was ready to crack a head or two if need be. It started off well enough but after 90 seconds he got worked up, his arms started pumping. The man was animated

It started when one of the guys from the Times (DLD) mentioned the 0-20 record the Lions have here in DC - something Gibbs already talked about earlier in the week - and the man started getting a lather. "It's ridiculous," Gibbs started, and then went on a rant. Segued into: "We won Super Bowls here before, right now we can't win anything." He then dropped a "swinging soul" bomb - about as close as this man will ever get to cursing. "We need to get A win someWAY, and it's going to take every swinging soul we've got." (Am I the only one who smells a Swinging Soul T-shirt here?).

Seemed like this would be a good time to let the man walk, and Coach Joe was already heading towards the locker room as he concluded this response, then my fellow Baltimoron, Jerry Coleman from Sportstalk 980 alluded to some comments that Gibbs allegedly made to George Michael during an interview about wanting to run the ball 70 percent of the time, and I turned the recorder off and just took it all in.

Coach Joe must have grunted the word balance six times in the exchange. "I have never said that my entire life! It's balance." (This reminded me of two things - a geology professor I has in Syracuse who would randomly yell out "Balance!" during his lectures to wake people up who fell asleep, and also the dude in Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science" video, whose yelling "Science!" in the background.)

So, now we're ready to play some football! That's what I'm talking about. Bring on the Lions.

that is what we need around here! Let's get pissed off and keep a chip on our sholder ALL season long! Peace loving Norv Turner is making the Chargers SUCK b/c he has none of this. I hope coach Joe pisses on a reporter by the end of the year!

NO PORTIS UPDATE?????

Just getting it out of the way for that one guy that is obsessing over every detail... better now than later.

Abide brothers, abide.

Awesome. I can't wait to see the repercussions of a fired up Joe Gibbs. Thanks Jasno.

they're gonna kick the livin' soul outta the lions.

Posted by: sniksder | October 5, 2007 1:58 PM

did he really say "swinging souls" or does that stand for something??

Posted by: Chris Larry | October 5, 2007 1:58 PM

I'd rather have a "Swinging Sole" t-shirt. Nothing like a dead flatfish hanging from a line doing nothing.

Maybe we could title it, "Brandon Lloyd Flops".

Thats the Gibbs I want to see, I want him all fired up, I know when I played ball that when the coach gets fired up so does the team, Its getting closer to gameday and with this I feel alot better about it.

Gibbisms page on wiki, anyone? I wont have the time this weekend. Maybe tonight after I start drinkming some Jack n Cokes.

But I may not know all of them like the rest.

Posted by: SkinsRealist | October 5, 2007 2:07 PM

Wonders what words Buddy Ryan would use instead of "swinging souls". We might not agree with the methods Coach Joe uses as far as game planning and clock management ect, but the man really cares about the Redskins and did not have to come back for this. InGibbsI(we)trust.

I LOVE IT! thats what this team needs is a dose of bitter nastiness. The meaner Gibbs gets the better. I want him chewing nails by Sunday morning and I want our boys to be cracking skulls all over the field.

The O needs to run up the score on the Lions joke of a defense and the D needs to teach Kitna et al that their greatest show on turf BS doesn't play on the grass battle fields of the NFC east. We got to lay a hurt on them at least as nasy as philly did.

SAK;

I should be getting my Reaper throw back tomorrow. I usually wear my Cooley Storm Jersey home and Moss white away, but this might be a special occasion as you say.

Of course that is why we lost two sundays ago... I was at Dover not wearing a jersey.

Posted by: Zebra | October 5, 2007 2:27 PM

I love this. I do get the feeling like it was directed at BLloyd though. Either way I love it.

boop boop boop - she blinded ME with Balance! Sounds like a plan.

So I need to do:

1) Blinded me w/ Balance
2) Balad of Soup ( I think it's on the wiki, right?)

There's an extra day this weekend - so I'll try to tackle 'em then if not befo.

In the meantime, it's not me, but ENJOY!

skinswest - you think Shanahan really cares who he has running the ball? They're all gonna run for over 1200, get signed to lucrative free agent deals or get traded, then fail to produce anything close to what they did in Denver. I still love CP, don't get me wrong - but that system is amazing.

Well, an unhappy correspondent named Redcoat, late of London, wrote to say he disagreed with our assessment of soccer as a particularly boring sport compared to football. While he had interesting things to say about rugby (also known as "thugs in striped shirts"- Editor's Note), Mr. Redcoat tried to defend soccer's non-stop action, compared to timeouts and huddles in real (American) football. Well, Mr. Redcoat is probably a fine bloke, but how does he explain the fact that at any given time in a soccer game, 80% of the players are standing still or shuffling around, whistling Milli Vanilli tunes and waving to their girlfriends in the stands? Meanwhile, there are riots going on in the bleachers and in the parking lot. Sorry, Mr. Redcoat, but the action should be on the field, even if it means only 15 seconds of real violence every minute.

A special thanks to RB in Maryland, who had wonderful things to say about my books and also asked my recommendation for a wine that goes well with Popeye's Chicken. Well, RB, I don't know about you, but I really like the extra spicy chicken with a chilled glass of Riunite Lambrusco. It really hits the spot, and always reminds me of the time I was in the Italian section of Atlanta, but that's another story for another time.

Posted by: mile high | October 5, 2007 02:30 PM

He gave Henry a big FA contract knowing he was on his third strike and was predicting a 1500 yd season from him this year. They've got a great system no doubt but they haven't been nearly as dominant since CP left, particularly late in the game and in the red zone. So yes, I think this will definetely sting Shanahan.

Posted by: skinswest | October 5, 2007 2:40 PM

Zebra I just got mine 2 weeks ago, my white samuels jersey is getting a little old so I decided to upgrade, got an awsome deal an authentic red landry jersey for 60 bucks.

Posted by: SAK | October 5, 2007 2:42 PM

Yes yes and YES. That's what I like to hear.

I see lots of running and it's gonna come down to whether or not we can be successful running.

I see lots of bend but don't break defense and the lions settling for FGs. I see a close game and a redskins win. httr

Posted by: WrongDog | October 5, 2007 2:42 PM

skinswest - saw a quote from Shanahan this morning to the effect of - signing someone who has only one strike left is much safer than signing someone who has two strikes left.....sad but true, I guess.

That's right - Tank Johnson. I hate to wish bad luck on people but I would love to see Jerry Jones if/when Tank gets in trouble before he can even set foot on the field. That guy is stupid for even being at a club after all that he's been through.

JLC quoted Gibbs saying: "We need to get A win someWAY, and it's going to take every swinging soul we've got."

Ha ha... When I played football in college the coaches would say "swinging d*#k" rather than "swinging soul."

I guess "swinging soul" is used for the media.

2nd half of Giants game his team gives up 21 straight points ... and coach gets mad 12 days later. Better late than never? This team needs some killer instinct. Maybe Gibbs is finding his?

Posted by: AL | October 5, 2007 3:04 PM

No Gibbs is so old it takes him 12 days to realize he lost to the giants.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 5, 2007 3:05 PM

With the media, Gibbs is either a cliche-filled near-dead zombie or a raving rude, hysterical lunatic.

Are you kidding me - he has not made hardly any game day decisions and it's Friday.

Go watch the interview and see for yourself.

They lose Sunday and he cracks large.

Now we get this post that's more inside Gibbs than anybody but his proctologist, and they're nowhere to be found, until the next soccer post.

And to make sure I'm perfectly clear on this; F SOCCER. And FLOYD!

Sweet Swinging Soul, who p!ssed in my coffee today?

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 5, 2007 3:15 PM

Nothing sings swinging soul like a Danish band ... http://www.swingingsoulmachine.com/

I wonder what got the guy so fired up? It couldn't have been the question about the Lions not winning here. Who's in contract negotiations (that could have pooped today)? Did something bad happen with the racing team? Did he get some news about a player that he wasn't expecting ... is the league getting ready to suspend somebody? Did a player or coach just fess up to him first about some off-field whoopsie?

Or was it just straight up piss offedness about lacksidaisium? Was this the last practice before the game?

The fire is encouraging, but hopefully it was inspired by football-game-winning reasons and not something nefarious.

Posted by: Redskin Robbie | October 5, 2007 3:17 PM

Someone has kidnapped the real Peter King or he has started drinking. 2 positive points in his outlook for the weekend.

2. This is the week for the Redskins' Clinton Portis to make the quantum leap to big fantasy player. He's playing the Lions, he finally feels close to normal, and Joe Gibbs is going to feed him a lot.

3. I really like Washington's Jason Campbell this week, and not just because he's going up against the Leos. I like him because he's starting to show signs, in practice and games, of being the kind of accurate passer he was at Auburn. Now, he may have to use Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell this week, which could be a worry, because he hasn't had much practice time with him. I still think it's going to be a big day for Campbell.

Posted by: cdubb | October 5, 2007 3:17 PM

Why was Gibbs pissed off? Probably at the prospect of having no Moss and a whimpering Lloyd at practice.

As good as done as in we won't have to wait till 2nd half to know they will lose.

dcsween, whether Gibbs will admit it or not, he is superstitious as all get out (just like I am) and everytime someone comments about things like us always beating a team (the Lions, etc.) he fears a jinx. Since this has been brought up ad nauseum all week, I'm not surprised he got angry.

I, for one, am rather concerned about Receiver, The practicing today. Not because he shouldn't be available to finally give game like he apparently did in San Fran. He should. Not because the more time he's actually suited up means the less he earns on an hourly basis. It does.

I'm concerned b/c I picked him to be inactive this week. I don't remember, is this pool the one involving a ham sandwich?

Lisa, I'll buy that. Makes sense to me. I, myself, have been known to fake Turrette's syndrome to ward off a jinx. Frankly, the current little pee-pee session btwn Squez and others might be inspired by the need to ward off a jinx.

Posted by: dcsween | October 5, 2007 3:50 PM

Lisa!! Angelic Voice of Redskin Reason!

This is entirely true. Gibbs 1.0 would always chide those meaningless stat quotes, when confronted.

Can we hope his fears are unfounded? :)

Posted by: Dik | October 5, 2007 3:51 PM

Sween - Maybe Receiver, The checked his blog last night and saw that he got bombarded yesterday with hate mail and decided it's best that he at least suit up...

Posted by: CC | October 5, 2007 3:55 PM

"Computers are about trying to kill you in a lake"

"Make a U-turn, if possible"

Lisa, I was serious. It completely makes sense that St. Joe would lose it over that question. [The possibility hadn't really occurred to me ... I feel better now ....]

That said, my game plan still entails physical removal of Kitna from the field. This runs counter to my personal mojo of not wishing injury or harm on anybody. I wonder if there might be another way to get him off the field ... Ex Lax in his Gatorade? That's not really injury or harm, as much inconvenience.

That being said, Joe has always side-stepped the questions that he didn't want to answer. Then there are those rare occasions when a media rep's question just sets him off.

I think that this particular episode was a long time coming and long overdue. Joe's at his best when he's angry. Focused. Determined. Ready to kick butt & take names later.

Please stop comparing the redskins to us losers....we were 15-1 the previous season and we were stacked with about 8-9 pro bowlers.

The redskins were 5-11 last year and have maybe 1 pro bowler on their roster.

There are no similarities between those 2 teams other than that they both have yellow in their uniforms

Posted by: Heath Shuler | October 5, 2007 4:25 PM

Predictions:
- five plus false start penalties from the Lions' O-line
- three picks by the Skins
- a fake FG attempt by Skins
- five completions by Jason Campbell for more than 20 yards
- four fumbles total (both) teams
- Betts and Portis each of a rushing TD

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Posted by: Redskin Robbie | October 5, 2007 4:30 PM

Sheesh do I get nervous about not jinxing ...
should be 4 fumbles total (btwn the two teams) and Betts/Portis each HAVE a rushing TD

Figure all of that is non-jinxing, but depending on how the rest of the game is played ...

"Don't make Coach Joe angry.....you wouldn't like him when he's angry"

Maybe that intensity will carry over to the second half on Sunday!

Posted by: JAH | October 5, 2007 4:39 PM

Man, this reminds me of an encounter I had with Coach Gibbs during the 1991 SB season. (and Stev Buckhantz telling Gibbs b4 the 91 season that Playboy mag., had picked them to win it all) I was shooting a "inspirational" video at Redskins Park (the old park) with some players and coaches, to be used for a firm that was having a meeting at Lansdowne. The Skins were still undefeateded at that time, with the Cardinals on deck. The question was asked of Gibbs of "how he thought they would do against the Cardinals". Gibbs was gratious as ever to the Cards, "tough game, division opponent" etc.. I somehow got the courage to speak up just as he was finishing his sentence with "If WE RUN THE BALL". DOH! Gibbs got instantly out of his cherub face and looked me straight in the eye and said "what?" I had no choice but to repeat the stupid stupid statement. I thought right at that moment how serious this man really is. How intense. I could see him choking the life out of me right then and there.
Best part is, I have it all on tape. I have only had the courage to show this embarrassing moment to a select few...and then only once.
I told Joe Gibbs to run the ball.

Rocky MacIntosh, near the top of the second round, was the 7th outside LB picked in the 2006 draft. There were a TON of good OLBs in that draft.

The second OLB picked, Ernie Sims, was picked 9th in that draft, and he leads the Lions in tackles. This week, Sims said this as he talked about Washington QB Jason Campbell: "As a linebacker corps, I really believe that we've just got to read the quarterback's eyes and break on him because I think we're going to have a lot of opportunities to have some interceptions."

For his own good, Mr. Sims should be cursing like a swinging soul because he has JINXED himself and his fellow LBs. JINX!

Posted by: CMoney | October 5, 2007 4:59 PM

Thanks for the heads up, Redcoat. I care so little about the fantasy matchup, relative to the real game the Skins are about to play. But I do appreciate it.

(And best of luck to your fantasy team, to look as good as possible in a losing effort.)

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | October 5, 2007 5:00 PM

I just give Emmitt credit for correctly naming one of the two teams.

Posted by: SMACK | October 5, 2007 5:01 PM

No problem Nate.

You must realize that even at this early juncture in the season fantasy football is probably more meanigful to me than my senselessly irrational Dolphins addiction.

What a thrill it is to feel out of the running by week 5....

Posted by: Redcoat | October 5, 2007 5:04 PM

SMACK, even you have to admit that Emmitt has about as much in common with coherent thought as Joe Gibbs does with Travis Henry.

Going from Moss-ARE-Thrash-Lloyd to Thrash-ARE-McCardell-Caldwell, the Skins' WR corps gets three inches taller.

Posted by: dcsween | October 5, 2007 5:09 PM

I guess it doesn't bother anybody that Old Coach Joe DID -- repeat, DID -- say the "70% run" line to George Michael last week on George's show, and then SCREAMED at the reporter today that he'd NEVER said that.

So Coach was stone cold wrong. He said it. I guess he didn't REMEMBER saying it, but it's not very smart to get all shirty about something that you actually DID SAY, clear as day.

Who cares if Gibbs contradicted himself..."you-play-to-win-the-game!" and we're trying to get to the "...playoffs!...playoffs!(mickey mouse voice)! and if we don't beat the Lions then, "they were who we thought they were", and then we'll need more practice..."we're talkin' about practice...not a game, practice." If we don't practice..."well...5-11...not very good"(in a hillbilly drawl)

I wonder what soul swinging looks like from afar. You know how you look across the street and you see someone jamming to their iPod and they look like idiots, but they don't know that they're even doing it? Somehow that's what I'm thinking soul swinging is like. Is it more of a sideways-sideways-arms swaying motion, or more of a bop-up-and-down-arms-flying motion?

How can I be St. Joe for Halloween without knowing such things?

I'm an old skool hip hop fan and a 70's baby... and I swear I've been listening to "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen and it's one of my favorite songs of all time (Queen too!) They are the rock version of Earth, Wind and Fire!!! RIP to Freddie Mercury.

Make it so!

Posted by: Zebra | October 5, 2007 8:00 PM

I'll have to go back and check but I'm pretty sure it was either Wednesday or Thursday. Work-SJK has kind of made the days blur together this week...

Posted by: redskirt | October 5, 2007 8:02 PM

I think bigfish let me know. it was about Betts not being a complimentary back, but a good replacement.

I dont know of any others. I dont live too near DC, so the post print edition is hard to get to.

If there are others, then hooray me!

Posted by: Zebra | October 5, 2007 8:06 PM

I just picked up The Band (1969) on CD. This is some amazing sjk, and it was just not working out trying to play the record in the car.

EW&F, awesome. In line to pay at Borders, I saw that someone had ditched an EWF CD atop some pumpkin carving literature, and I almost bought it. But I am not a big greatest hits guy. My wife and I were at an EWF show once, and we were shakin' it so good that we received the ultimate complement. A black couple came up and invited us to their church. Sadly, I don't church.

I just had to post after 6pm to cement my loser status.

Posted by: SMACK | October 5, 2007 8:06 PM

Total loser - I'm down.

que es EWF?

Posted by: dik | October 5, 2007 8:16 PM

Earth Wind & Fire. And while I'm typing one more non-Skins question.

Why did Marion Jones pick now to speak up? Guilty conscience or was the sjk about to hit the fan? Anyone know?

Posted by: Stating the Obvious | October 5, 2007 8:47 PM

I will try to succinctly address the globs of posts that I have missed:

1. I love soccer (seriously). Can never have enough soccer posts.

2. The Office has disappointed so far this season.

3. Lamont and Elizabeth = Sanford and Son
Lionel = The Jeffersons

4. It is after 6PM. You draw your own conclusions.

5. Redskins w/out Moss this weekend is too frightening for me to think about.

6. BALANCE!

Very jealous tonight... my dad and my big bro (live in NoVA) are going to the game on Sunday!

I'm fired up like Coach Joe...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | October 5, 2007 9:02 PM

Coach Joe - throw some chairs! We are so gonna win like I said so cause I said so!

Umm I'd rather Oye Como doesn't play and heals the hammy more otherwise we risk a total season loss . . . . I'm smacking my own dam head for saying it out loud.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 9:29 PM

And very happy to report that some of us are on the west coast posting after 6pm local time... if you're gonna crown us, crown us.

Hang on baby jesus it's about to get bumpy up here!

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 9:40 PM

Hey Jasno,

I've been an insulin dependant diabetic for 30 years now and I'll be dollars to donuts that Joe's blood sugar was low when he was addressing the press today. Low blood sugar makes people very cranky and cause disjointed speech.

Of course it's also possible he was just pissed.

Posted by: Redskinrex | October 5, 2007 9:41 PM

SHHEEOOOTT I am so fired up!

I say they play that sucka on the jumbotron at FedEx afore the game and get the crowd going.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 9:42 PM

I'm hosting a dinner party at, uh, a restaurant because I'm too lazy to be bothered cooking today. That and I've elected into a bet with some chick (some crazy chick!) to see which of the two of us can go longer through the month without drinking. I already feel like SJK. Whoever came up with sobriety as a concept is a SJK.

All of that said, GREAT clip of St. Joe. I'm psyched!

'Skins 77, Lions 3. It'll give us something to SJK about on Monday. "Fire Man Boobs! 3 points! What a loser!" Oh, and should we trade Betts to Tampa Bay?

Posted by: P Diddy | October 5, 2007 9:43 PM

And you know what else has lit a fire in my pants . . . no I'm not taking Valtrex . . . it's fleet week aqui en San Francisco which means the Blue Angels are performing which means I watched them zoom above the city for practice today as I drove home and I get to see them zoom about tomorrow. It totally kicks A$$!

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 9:44 PM

Hey Nate,
So who do you think were the best Skins #80 and in what order?

Stephen Alexander
Roy Jefferson
Virgil Seay
Desmond Howard

Who am I forgetting?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 9:49 PM

The other great thing, sfskin, is that Fleet Week brings sailors to the Castro. Get out there and shake it, girl!

Posted by: P Diddy | October 5, 2007 9:54 PM

Back when my seats were in the front row, I remember Stephen Alexander came up into the stands from the field during warmups to hug his wife and newborn kid.

Stephen Alexander's wife was, of course, THE star of "MILF Island".

ESPN insider advanced scouting report:

Will the Detroit passing attack be too much for the Washington defense?

The Lions' offense is based on QBJon Kitna throwing the ball to a talented stable of wide receivers. Wideouts Roy Williams, Mike Furrey, and Shaun McDonald have been very productive this season in offensive coordinator Mike Martz's passing attack, and the offense will continue to produce as long as the offensive line is able to keep Washington defenders off Kitna. Redskins' defensive coordinator Gregg Williams has seen the tape from last weekend's win over Chicago and knows that pressure on Kitna will affect the productivity of Detroit's offense.

Another factor that will dictate how well Kitna does this Sunday is the Redskins' secondary, led by FS Sean Taylor. They have had a week to get talented players like CBs Shawn Springs, Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot and rookie SS LaRon Landry healthy and come up with a scheme to confuse Kitna and give the Detroit offense looks it's not accustomed to seeing. The Redskins defense will be ready for Jon Kitna and the passing game on Sunday.

Can the Lions stop Clinton Portis and the Redskins' running game?
The Detroit defensive, line led by DTs Shaun Rogers and Cory Redding, is capable of denting the line of scrimmage and keeping Portis' yards to a minimum. The Lions have improved against the run in the past few weeks but their biggest test of the season is coming this week. The Redskins' offensive line has been playing well as a unit has had the bye week to get even more in sync. Washington is a top-10 rushing offense on the strength of offensive line coach Joe Bugel's tried and true counter and power gap schemes as well as inside and outside zone plays. The line is disciplined in its technique and the Redskins do a solid job of controlling time of possession with the running game. It will be difficult for Detroit LBs Boss Bailey and Paris Lenon to stop Portis, who should get 100-plus yards against an overmatched defense.

How can Detroit better its chances to win?
The Lions chances of winning the game will increase if they get the ground game going. It's true that Detroit has won three games practically without running the football, but Martz and head coach Rod Marinelli have to find a way to eat up more of the clock and keep the defense off the field. Throwing the ball as much as the Lions do makes for shorter possessions. The Lions don't have to rush for 200 yards to win this game, just make Washington aware that they're capable of being productive. That will make the Redskins respect the running game and open up more play-action, and the more things the Redskins have to worry about the less time they have to concentrate on what the Lions do best, which is throw the ball.

Scouts' Edge

The bye week will pay off for the Redskins at home against the Lions. After performing the usual self-scout during week off Washington should improve in all facets of the game. The team that controls the clock should win this game and the Redskins have the better running game and are more capable of doing that. Washington QB Jason Campbell is improving every week and getting more comfortable with the offense and the two weeks the Redskins have had to game plan for the Lions will help him.

Detroit pass for a lot of yards and Kitna will get the ball to his playmakers. The Lions will move the ball down the field but the Washington defense will keep them from finishing drives with touchdowns. The Redskins will play well at home this weekend and should get their third win of the season.

Prediction: Redskins 28, Lions 23

Posted by: JustMe | October 5, 2007 9:56 PM

Would you put Desmond Howard ahead of Laveranues Coles? Hmm... a couple of nice catches Sunday, and McCardell jumps both of them...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | October 5, 2007 9:56 PM

And my vote for #1 #80 is Virgil Seay.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 5, 2007 9:57 PM

Just don't mistake me for MVDame, because I look nothing like that chick.

SMACK, don't hate me cause I'm beautiful...

Speaking of great 80's:

Do you remember that time Desmond Howard downed a punt at like the opponent's 3 or 4 yard line by catching it cleanly? Wow. That was awesome. He's definitely the number one 80 in my book...

Posted by: MV Dame | October 5, 2007 10:02 PM

Jasno's soccer/family post was genius. Even the timing.

This post is great.

Posted by: farstriker | October 5, 2007 10:05 PM

Ok, good, I didn't even recall that Coles was 80.

Yes, as a Skin, his production was definitely beyond that of all four of those guys.

Agreed?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:05 PM

Dame in DC, how's it going, dude? Feel good to be on the mainland?

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | October 5, 2007 10:06 PM

So, I am still finding myself thinking of the Giants game and the last two plays from the one and we can't get it in.

So I say to myself what Redskins would I have rather had in the game for those two last plays?
How about Joe Jacoby and Russ Grimn on the left side?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:07 PM

Actually back on the Island right now, Nate Dogg. The Swamp (sf's term) was great, but up here for the weekend before I head out to Cali for a week.

The hardest part about DC and my new place was the sporadic internet access and, thus, infrequent and limited BMGO time...

Posted by: MV Dame | October 5, 2007 10:09 PM

Ray, how about Lachey, Grimm, Bostic, Schlereth, and Simmons, with Jacoby off the bench?

:-)

Posted by: P Diddy | October 5, 2007 10:11 PM

Gawd the Daily Show is so genius!

MV - we have plans to make I believe.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:14 PM

Agreed. That was a fun exercise, Ray.

Let's rank Redskin #86'ers next, since that's the number Reche Caldwell will be wearing... I imagine we'll be seeing him a bit on Sunday as well, though it seems McCardell has leapfrogged him...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | October 5, 2007 10:14 PM

Ahh P Diddy you are thinking of the 91 team?
Jacoby actually started at RT
Somebody help me out here, what I can't recall is by the 91 season was Bostic starting C or was Raleigh McKenzie?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:15 PM

I vote Stephen Alexadner as best #80. Didn't he go onto Denver and have a solid if not florid career?

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:16 PM

You know it becomes confusing after awhile because Bugel over the years had
Jacoby at LT ,and RT
McKenzie at LG and C
Grimm at C then LG
Bostic I think was always C

So for the 91 team I "think" it was
Lachey, McKenzie, Bostic, Schlereth, Jacoby
And off the bench were
G- Grimm [he was losing it his last few years]
T- Simmons

Am I missing anyone?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:20 PM

I believe McKenzie started, but Bostic played quite a bit. Was Jacoby on that team as well?

I was thinking more of: "all time favorite Hogs", but 1991 team works for me as well. 11 sacks allowed (3 of which were in that final Philly game).

Posted by: P Diddy | October 5, 2007 10:20 PM

Posted by: P Diddy | October 5, 2007 10:22 PM

sfskin, last night's "The Daily Show" was AWESOME.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 5, 2007 10:23 PM

Was it '87 or '91 where Bostic was on the bench and then won starting spot?

I feel like once Bostic was a starter he stayed that way till retirment.

Gonna go look it up.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:24 PM

Hang on baby jesus it's about to get bumpy up here!

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 09:40 PM

I'm going to save this for the next time some a$$clown asks why a cowboys fan lives on this blog.

Posted by: SMACK | October 5, 2007 10:24 PM

Why the SJK does a cowpoke fan live on this blog?

Posted by: farstriker | October 5, 2007 10:28 PM

'91 / Bandwagon / Russ "The Flea" Grimm. F the Patriots throwing TDs to LBs (barf)... we were throwing to an old guard!

Ah, memories...

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | October 5, 2007 10:29 PM

It was 87 when Grimm was injured and Raleigh McKenzie did a good job and Buges decided to not change it though Grimm was said to be back and healthy ready for Super Bowl vs. Denver.
I recall announcers talking about it on TV and thinking that had to be agoniznig for Grimm.

Someone help me here:
LT Jacoby
LG McKenzie
C Bostic
RG Theilmann
RT May

Is that right?
I watched the game about a month ago on my old VHS tape that I recorded that night.
I should have said I watched "the quarter" just for fun.
It was fun!!!

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:31 PM

To paraphrase Jasno, bigger forces than us at work here, my friend.

Posted by: SMACK | October 5, 2007 10:31 PM

I just watched Coach Joe on Redskins.com today's q/a.

he was joking around with that goofy laugh and then one question seemed to change his mood. he was markedly intense and he seemed to grow increasingly frustrated with with the questions.

The question that began the transition for Coach Joe?

A question about .........................
drum roll please..........................
"the receiver, Brandon Lloyd".

Anyone else see the change in Coach Joe as visibly?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:36 PM

Okay here are the starters for SB 1991

LT Lachey
LG McKenzie
C Bostic
RG Schlereth
RT Jacoby

Now not sure this was it at start of the season but Bostic played 16 games and so I think McKenzie spelled him at C on certain plays but he was starter.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:42 PM

BTW I'm sure this is a creampuff question but name the punter on that '91 team.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:43 PM

And we kicked the Leo's arses 45-0 in game 1! REPEAT!

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:45 PM

In all honesty I had forgotten Sfskin
But I also watched the first half of that SB victory over the Bills as well recently.

So, I saw him and therefore do remember it was Kelley Goodburn

Great memories though, huh sfskin?
Wilber Marshall was an animal in that first half! Man, fun to watch!

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:47 PM

I just ate what must be the equivalent of the entire Gilroy garlic crop. Good thing I'm on a dateless streak.

Posted by: SMACK | October 5, 2007 10:49 PM

I looooove driving through Gilroy when the garlic is in the air (or is it that way all the time?). I'm a big garlic fan.

Posted by: Nate in the PDX | October 5, 2007 10:50 PM

Hey sfskin,
Yes, I recall that was a Sunday night game in week one, right?
Don't remember any particulars but one, didn't Mitchell return a kick for a TD?

45-0 that was a great year!

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 10:50 PM

RRay - yep great memories, I think they've been keeping us all going for 15 years.

And you win a new Roomba! Kelly Goodburn indeed. Easy paycheck for him that season.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:51 PM

Sadly Ray I was at college and it was waaaayy before Sunday ticket so I caught only a few games that season. My memories are all a jumble from beer and seeing many of the games on tape over the years.

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:54 PM

Smack - what kid? what ball? The little shti who stole the game from Orioles back in the 90s and sent them down the long road of doom?

Posted by: sfskin | October 5, 2007 10:55 PM

No no sfskin, not quite that dramatic, but a kid in Boston just picked a fly foul ball out of the 1st baseman's glove, saving an out. A few people began swooning, but it seems to have passed. It's on TBS if you can find that amid the channel universe.

Posted by: SMACK | October 5, 2007 10:59 PM

I've been catching up on all the posts from today and I have to say I'm amazed at the amount of disrespect directed at Gibbs. I just don't understand it. Maybe it's because I suffered for years before He came along and delivered 3 superbowl championship teams in 9 years.

Let me ask you this: Would you rather we have Norv, Marty, or Spurrier leading the Skins? I think not. What has Gibbs done for this organization since his return?

1. instant credibility
2. hope
3. playoff win
4. consistency

I'll be the 1st to admit I had higher hopes and we have not achieved as much as we hoped for. But remember, Gibbs inherited a team in disarray, and he has turned it around and has them on the right track. So lighten up and enjoy him while he's here. A few years from now you may be reminiscing about the halcyon days during Gibbs tenure.

Posted by: cosmofla | October 5, 2007 10:59 PM

Wasn't that kids name Jeffrey Mayer

Posted by: cosmofla | October 5, 2007 11:00 PM

Redskin Ray,

In my humble opinion, Wilbur Marshall was the missing ingredient. Once he joined the Skins, good things happened. He was incredible. My lasting image of him is seeing him airborne, parallel to the ground, delivering a knockout blow. How we got him from the da Bears was criminal(plan B).

Posted by: cosmofla | October 5, 2007 11:06 PM

Hey Cosmofla,
I too love Coach Joe
In my post I was just pointing out to me a clear transition for him today was the Brandon Lloyd q.
He got really serious when he answered that one, and it was an intense coach Joe from that moment on...

I love Coach for bringing us the victories, and yes, I do recall the winning days of George Allen, the three years of jack pardee, and I even recall as a little kid, Lombardi and Bill Austin.

You live in FL?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 11:06 PM

Charley Casserly was the best at getting guys via Plan B, but actually we got Wilber via 2 1RD picks!!!

We won the SB so had the last pick and figured we could get rid of two of them for Wilber.

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 11:09 PM

sfskin,
You were in college for SB 22 or 26?
I was married and have videos of both of those games taped.

However, I have looked and cannot find a copy of SBVII vs. Miami!!
Yep, you guessed it, I was in college!!
Haven't ever seen the game since just a couple of plays on highlights.

I even contacted Redskins.com pleading with them to put the game on DVD but they never responded.

Anyway you know I can get my hands on that game to see it?

Posted by: Redskin Ray | October 5, 2007 11:13 PM

Ray, I do live in Florida, Port St Lucie. Are you in Florida?

I had the good fortune to meet Coach Lombardi as a kid while playing CYO ball. Larry Brown was there as well. I remember Allen and Pardee. But my lasting memory of the Allen era is losing to the Dolphins(the bain of my existence). What sweet revenge beating them for our 1st championship. Didn't Pardee have cancer?

Posted by: cosmofla | October 5, 2007 11:14 PM

Yes, Pardee had cancer when playing for the Rams, had to miss a season or two and then returned.

I recall when he was with the Skins they referenced this frequently.

Yep, in FL as well.
have to follow the Skins by web site reading, and listening to games on webcast.
I don't want to pay for NFL Ticket
