M. Washington is a major loss to the defense. He always has to be accounted for not just in blitz packages but also in coverage. Tremendous news about Daniels. After Fred "Capt. Stubing" Smoot played with a cracked sturnum it was clear the guy deserves warrior status. I read an article yesterday in ESPN Magazine while waiting to get a haircut. They referred to Randel El as barely a 3rd WR. Does Jason write for them too?

That shows what ESPN knows... El is going to continue to open eyes this year. I think he will only get better as a receiver as the season progresses and thus far he's been our best (no knock on Moss).

Nate in PDX, you've gotta point, but I doubt they will come into this game over confident.. Favre & Lambeau alone give cause for concern.. but match up wise, I believe favors the skins. Pack have a potent d (against lousy offenses mind you), o-line is nicked up, they have not faced a D with the speed that the skins' d has,2 of their top 3 receivers are inexperienced, their TE is big but he's not gonna stretch the field like say a shockey,they have no run game.. Hopefully the skins can put together 4 qtrs of hard nosed football and bring home a win, but I am not saying it will be easy.

Marcus is less critical against the Pack who throw short and quick. And we have depth at LB. D-line won't sack Favre much because of his quick passes, but they need to get their hands up to tip passes. ARE is important because he and Santana are really both dangerous and open up the whole offense. In case no one noticed, the Skins may think they are a power run team, but the offense is more effective with a pass first mentality. I think a big part of that is Campbell getting his rhythm down early. Still, its football and injuries will always be a part and so far, our depth has been good enough.

Clinton Hill, are you being serious? Marshall on the field last year was akin to playing defense with only 10 guys.

E in VB, I concur. Randel El is a bona fide threat any time he touches the ball. It's just funny reading articles from September and what all these experts predict. They're all the same anyway. It's like one person writes an article and everyone else regurgitates it so either they're all right or all wrong. Man, dare to step outside the box once in a while.

Getting back to the injuries, I still think Randel El will play because he has value on the field even if he just runs a rout to draw coverage away from the primary WR. Also, with all the modern 'treatment' available to por ballers these days, isn't a week plenty of time for a hammy? Could this be a case of JJG fudging the IR's again? I'm thinking yes. Watch for Favre to look for screens and short dumps to RB's and TE's because Marcus has the speed and the smarts to make those plays - he's proven it.

Now we have a real 'chicken or the egg' theory. Is the D-Line playing well because of the brilliant secondary play - or vice versa?

Watching NFL Network online, i watched the preview of the Lions game. Bill Mass and two other slubs basically saying the Skins had no chance... we all could do that job... it isnt that hard as long as you dont get flustered in front of the camera.

Marshall, I wasn't so down on. I think that had the Assistant Deity - Defence gone with game planning similar to the pared-down lean-and-mean scheme now instead of his super-fancy confuse-everyone-5-ways-to-Sunday work of 'genious', he might have actually performed a bit better. Not that I don't mind LoFleBaker being in the mix now...

But Holdmann, ugh. Godfrey might not be great, and might not be putting himself on the highlight reels anytime soon, but at least he doesn't draw attention to himself for playing badly. Ummm.. El isn't on IR, how can JJG be fudging IR when none of the players mentioned were even considered for IR.

But it could be a case of making the inactive decisions easier on the ol' man's heart strings. It's got to be easier to sit the guy with the injury. So far, injury has been his main reason for sitting starting players for a game all year (Springs, Smoot, Moss). Part me thinks he is trying to keep these guys off the field till they are closer to 100% to ensure we still have them come playoff time!

Hamstring tears are almost impossible to heal correctly and take forever to do so. So hamstring pulls are treated very carefully and conservatively. A severe hamstring pull can take weeks or months to heal.

Wayne P...let me try to explain it to you like I would to a 3rd grader...Our good friend from Public Enemy (Chuck D.) was merely trying to state that given that El has a hamstring injury, the coaches and trainers do not want to make it worse. If it gets worse, it could turn into a more severe injury, such as a severe pull or tear, which may take longer to heal.

A little anatomy lesson.

Hamstrings are the largest muscle group in the body and run down the back of the leg from the pelvis to the knee. The groin muscles are in the upper inside portion of the leg and across the lower front pelvic area. Both are very slow to heal since both are used for most everyday functions, including walking, running, sitting down, standing up, etc.

Santana has a groin muscle pull. ARE has a hamstring pull.

Muscle pulls and tears can be the result of improper stretching, but are most often caused by imbalances in muscle development. The hamstrings are balanced by the quadriceps (front of the thigh), for example. Over-development of either one will cause problems in the other.

Earlier this week, our scouts filed their advance scouting report on this week's matchup between the Redskins and packers. Now they're back with a second look.

Matchup to watchWashington offensive coordinator Al Saunders vs. Green Bay defensive coordinator Bob Sanders
Saunders has kept defenses on their heels this season and his feel for when to call a run or pass has been exceptional. And his use of screens and some gimmick plays with WR Antwaan Randle El gives opponents even more to prepare for. Saunders also likes to use TE Chris Cooley on option routes and on the backside of play-action passes to force the opposing safeties to come down and help in pass defense, which in turn opens up deeper routes.

Sanders will have a lot of his plate this weekend his defense must be the aggressor and dictate the tempo of the game. The Packers can do that by penetrating upfield with defensive lineman and hurrying Redskins' QB JasonCampbell. The right combination of blitzes and coverages can confuse the Washington and get Campbell in a panic state. The advantage goes to Saunders and his hot hand, though.

How can the Redskins force turnovers against the Green Bay passing game?
It's always easier said than done, but if Washington can put enough pressure on Packers QB Brett Favre and keep him uneasy in the pocket he is prone to make mistakes and throw interceptions. Favre has limited his mistakes so far this season, though, and Washington defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will have to find a way to not only pressure Favre but also disguise coverages. The Redskins defense shutdown the Detroit passing game last week with pressures and tight coverage and the recipe for success will likely be the same this week. Washington FS Sean Taylor and CB Carlos Rogers have been playing well and have become ball magnets, while DE Andre Carter has been relentless off the edge and OLB Marcus Wasington has timed the blitzes well in recent weeks. All four will have to play well again this week to force mistakes from Favre and get a win for the Redskins.

Can Washington QB Jason Campbell remain hot against a solid Green Bay defense?
Campbell is one of the most underrated and improved players in the NFL this season. He has been playing at a high level, making big plays and limiting his mistakes. Campbell is finally comfortable with offensive coordinator Al Saunders' play book, which is as thick as a phone book, and Saunders is adding new wrinkles and concepts each week.

On the other side of the ball, the Packers come with very solid coverage players in CBs Al Harris and Charles Woodson. Both are capable of being shutdown corners in man coverage and taking away Redskins' WRs Santana Moss and Antwaan Randle El. Injury could force Randle El out of the lineup this week, but if he does play he is capable of stretching the field vertically. Green Bay LBs A.J. Hawk and Nick Barnett will be tested on play-action and must stay disciplined and get good coverage drops. Overall, it looks like Campbell should still have a solid day even with the talent on the Packers' defense.

Can Green Bay run the ball against the Redskins defense?
The Green Bay offense has two capable running backs in DeShawn Wynn and Vernand Morency and is capable of getting over 100 yards in most games. However, the Packers are facing a Redskins defense that has been stingy against the run and is playing with a lot of intensity. In order for Green Bay to be successful on the ground there must be a commitment to getting Wynn and Morency more carries than the 22 they had last week against Chicago. The offensive line has been playing well and moving defenders off the line of scrimmage and if offensive coordinator Joe Philbin can establish the running game early it will open up play-action for Favre, something the veteran excels at.

The Redskins are on a roll and everyone in Washington is playing well, while the Packers are coming off a loss to the Bears in a game they feel got away from them. Lambeau Field is a tough place for a road team to win but the Redskins still get the edge this week. Washington should be able to establish the run game well and control time of possession, and if they stick to their strengths they can get the win. In addition, Washington should be able to keep Favre on the sideline with Turnovers and three-and-out possessions, and avoid it second loss of the season.

Prediction: Redskins 24, Packers 14

Redskins tight end Chris Cooley told Washington-based radio station DC101-FM that the Lions quit in the second half of their 34-3 loss this past Sunday, partly because of the heat.

"I think it was a contributing factor in why we won the game," Cooley said. "I mean, Detroit's not practicing in 90-degree heat. We have been. It's been hot every day. We were pretty used to it. They were dead in the second half. They didn't care. It seemed like they didn't care what happened.

"When you get tired, fatigue kind of takes over. We were dominating the first half of the game and it stayed close, but we really pulled away in the second half when they made a lot of errant plays."

When asked if he could tell the Lions' heads were not into the game, Cooley said, "You could definitely tell."

"For example, we come out (in the first quarter), we come out and try to run the ball, and they're real physical. They're playing solid. It's tough to get yards -- everything's high-speed. And then, a couple plays into the second half, and it's just like, I get into blocking a guy, and they pretty much just stop and let me block them.

"It's like, 'Well, thanks, buddy,' I'll just hold you here and we'll run away from you."

The Packers' defense has been solid, but not spectacular, and has fallen far short of the preseason hype it helped create, PackerReport.com's Steve Lawrence says.

With 5-0 Dallas hosting 5-0 New England on Sunday, the media are frothing at the mouth like a couple of rabid dogs sitting in front of the meat counter at the grocery store.
Oh, what could have been, though.

Had Joe Gibbs not forgotten how to coach in the waning moments against the New York Giants and had the Packers not treated the football like it was covered in angry hornets last week against the Bears, the Packers and Redskins would be entering Sunday's tilt at Lambeau Field with a combined 9-0 record.

Alas, we'll have to settle for merely a combined record of 7-2, and, frankly, a bigger game in the grand scheme of things.

That's especially so for the Packers, who are riding high in first place but could be riding low if they suffer a second consecutive loss heading into next week's bye.

When you looked at the schedule back in late August, you would have thought the games against San Diego and Chicago would have been the toughest on the first half of the tricky season schedule. Looking through the prism of today, however, it's safe to say Sunday's game against the Redskins will be the toughest.

Much has been made of the matchup between Brett Favre and the Packers' receivers against the Redskins' star-studded secondary. Washington is allowing a ridiculously low 4.52 yards per pass attempt this season, while Favre is having a sublime year at this late juncture of his career.

The opposite matchups, however, are just as intriguing, and not just because the Packers' defense needs to step up should the offense falter.

Led by budding quarterback Jason Campbell, Washington ranks fourth in the NFC in offense, including third in rushing and ninth in passing. Campbell has been sacked just five times, a testament not only to his line but the third-year pro's unexpected poise in his first year as the unquestioned starter.

"He's young at quarterback, we know that, but I felt like he made some real good decisions," Gibbs said. "And many times your quarterback, the best decision he makes is when it's not there, when he chooses to do the smart thing."

The Packers' defense, meanwhile, hasn't been bad -- not by a long shot -- but it hasn't been the standout unit everyone expected.

That group talked boldly of developing into a top-five unit this season. Instead, after five games against not exactly the most potent offenses the NFL has to offer, the Packers rank 17th in the NFL in yards allowed -- 14th against the run and a surprising 23rd against the pass -- and 12th in points allowed with 18.6 points per game.

Fortunately, the Packers' defense has come up huge at some opportune times -- Aaron Kampman's sack and strip of Eli Manning against the Giants, Nick Barnett's interception against the Chargers and Atari Bigby's interception against the Vikings -- but overall, this group hasn't met the lofty expectations it set for itself.

A few players haven't taken their necessary and expected steps forward. Chief among them is safety Nick Collins, who has been little more than a tease during his brief career. A.J. Hawk, like the Barnett of last season and 2005, has made a bunch of tackles but few of significance. Bigby was all over the place in the preseason but largely quiet during the first five games.

"I think our defense has played outstanding in spurts and has played very good for the most part," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said this week. "But we're having those explosive gains come up ... three, four a game that's really not giving them the opportunity to close an offense out."

While hardly disappointments, Charles Woodson -- who had eight interceptions last season but is looking for his first this season -- and Al Harris haven't been quite as dominant. That's led to the pass defense's disappointing ranking and an abundance of "explosive plays" -- 26 completions of at least 16 yards, including the huge breakdown that led to Desmond Clark's late 34-yard, go-ahead touchdown that lifted the Bears last week.

So far, it's been the surprising Packers offense that's been carrying the team. Sunday's showdown would be a perfect time for a talented Packers defense to play up to the hype it created.

The Packers have had trouble covering opponents' tight ends for a year or so. The Redskins have a good tight end in Chris Cooley. He has some crazy hair but will be a challenge for the defense.
I hope Washington goes with two tight ends, though. Their backup TE is Todd Yoder. He went to Vanderbilt and I was one of the folks who recruited him. He came to Vandy for his visit and nobody was around, so Eric Johnson, who is now a coach at Iowa and I had to host Yoder. Not much was going on, so we took him to a Women's Basketball game against the USA national team. He was a high school running back his senior year, came to Vandy as a wide receiver and has now bulked up to play tight end. This is his seventh year and he has played for the Bucs and Jaguars in prior years. He is a special teams guy mostly but he has good hands. As a freshman, he was Vandy's only offensive weapon. They would just throw it up for him and hope he caught it.

Probably the most coincidental part is that he married a young lady who also went to Vanderbilt. After I finished my graduate degree at Vanderbilt, I was an assistant coach of the women's lacrosse team (it is a long story) for about six months and his wife Sue was the team's best player. Todd is about 6-5 and Sue is close to 5-foot so they are a contrast in styles. She was as fast as they come though and a fierce competitor.

The world is a small place.

Small-town Mississippians Favre and Campbell face off on Sunday

ASHBURN, Va. -- Brett Favre and Jason Campbell grew up 100 miles apart in rural Mississippi. The combined population of their hometowns -- Kiln and Taylorsville -- is less than 4,000.

"You have nothing else to do but sit outside and throw footballs at trees," Campbell said Wednesday. "That's how you work on your accuracy. Knock some bark off a tree."

Small-town people not only have their own set of jokes, they are also quiet neighborly. So during the offseason Campbell figured he would pay a visit to the Green Bay Packers legend, who now lives in Hattiesburg. The Washington Redskins quarterback walked up -- unannounced -- to the call box outside Favre's gated home.

No answer. Campbell waited five minutes and went away.

"I didn't want a helicopter to come by," Campbell said.

Told on Wednesday that Campbell had come calling, Favre seemed bemused.

"I didn't know he came by," Favre said. "What did he say he was coming by for?"

My guess is no, the scabs did not get SB rings... just seems like that would be beyond the pale.

So let me guess, smeone is implicitly or explicitly saying that our SB win is tainted because we went 3-0 with replacement players? F anybody who says so. We played the same schedule as everybody else, and hello, we did win those playoff games.

Nate - No one said that. But Marino/Carter/Collinsworth collectively bashed all SCABS for playing and taking food from their plate. Of course non of their teams won more than 1 game during those games.

Costas made the point that Gibbs and Walsh knew these games would count and they did there best to motivate and coach up these players to win these games. The players gave those coaches the credit for that...

Also Nate you may want to talk with Cindy about getting some $$$ since you are on Page 2 about 2-3 times a week.

They (WP) are abusing the rules they set (about reusing comments and names) if you ask me.

Maybe we (reg bloggers) should go on strike until we come up with a better deal?

Everyone seems so confident about beating the Pack. Kinda the same vibe b4 the Giants game. No prediction from Cindy this time though. I'm worried about a strong D exposing the right side of our o-line. Though Wade and Fab have filled in admirably.

I guess the WashPo people pick out stuff from their online comments and publish them. Their standards (obviously) are pretty low. I get the impression this is a regular feature, but I don't know how frequent, and I don't know if it's limited to Sports or other sections.

Bear in mind that I haven't seen a brick and mortar WashPo in over a year... so it's up to me old mum, back in the wilds of Prince William County, to compile me clippings...

JustMe, I freaked out when I saw Sellers behind Portis on that one play! I was practically yelling at everyone at the sports bar, pointing madly at the screen.

Needless to say, I am probably a difficult person to watch a Skins game with.
