Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Monday Afternoon H-Back (UPDATED)

Man, where should we start? So much to cover. Bottom line is that was about as thorough of a win as you can have, even taking the score out of it. The Skins defense completely turned the Lions into what they never want to be - a run-first team for much of the third quarter with the game still in the balance - and Washington's offense systematically picked apart Detroit's secondary and had that defense begging for mercy and gasping for air by halftime.

Every single swinging soul I saw pretty much played his guts out. And you can't ask for anything more than that.

First, here's some sick stats to consider from halftime:

First Downs: Redskins 15- Lions 4
Yards: Redskins 236 - Lions 41
Pass Yards: Redskins 171 - Lions 15
Plays: Redskins 41 - Lions 17
TOP: Redskins 22:14 - Lions 7:46

The last time they beat a team by 31 points was the 52-17 "Dinner Bowl" against San Fran 10/23/2005

The Lions had 144 net yards, the lowest of any Redskin opponent since Joe Gibbs 1.0

According to my pals at The Elias Sports Bureau - you guys rock, thanks for letting me keep you on speed dial - the last time the Skins gave up fewer than 144 net yards was Oct. 12, 1992 vs. Denver, when the Skins yielded 128 yards. Guess the final score at RFK that day? You got it, 34-3. Weird, eh? October home game almost 15 years prior to the day with the indentical score?

D Line Dominance/Defensive Effort

But to me, the defensive line was the key to everything (and that's pretty much the consensus in The Park today as well). They took the Lions biggest strength - their aerial game - and completely stuffed it before it began. Jon Kitna never established a tempo in that rhythm offense, and was often running for his life. The Redskins had to exploit Detroit's weakness at O Line to give the DBs a fighting chance, and they completely dominated the game. All five D Linemen who took regular action - Daniels, Griffin, Montgomery, Carter and Evans - had standout performances and made plays. That was some vintage 2004 Cornelius Griffin right there. Amazing how much the bye week can help heal a man.

Gregg Williams called a brilliant game as well. He mixed up his underneath coverage, did some smart stuff moving Shawn Springs around and going man-to-man in certain matchups and had everything set up under a deep cover-2 shell. He relied on his speed and personnel to make plays from the D Line to the LBs to the DBs, resisted the urge to blitz and completely flustered Mike Martz. People at The Park are convinced that Martz got a mandate from head coach Rod Marinelli to start running the ball in the second half - the Skins knew they had Detroit where they wanted them at that point - and were surprised the Lions did not go 4-wide or 5-wide more than they did.

The defensive backs played a physical game and the overall tenacity of the hitting - from Sean Taylor's brain-dislodging hit on special teams on down - by the secondary was imperative. They are relying on teams to think twice about going down the seam or over the middle 30 yards downfield. Also, Taylor and Landry did a great job of sticking to the system, not being lured out of their responsibilities and sitting on the deep routes. Sean is back to picking the ball off, and positioning has been the key. On most of these picks he hasn't had to do anything but wait for the ball to get to him and the simplification of the system is benefiting him greatly.

Offense:

Finally, all the fantasy-football plagued people begging for a big-number game from JC got it. The anecdotal evidence over his first 10 games should have been enough, but in case it wasn't, how's 23-for-29 work for you, with two TDs and no picks? Let me guess, when I do a webchat this week someone will be complaining about when's Jason going to get his first 300-yard game?

He spread the ball around to 8 teammates. He hit on all types of routes, made some incredibly accurate throws. Sure, he still delivered the ball late a few times - no one is perfect at that position and this kid is so far ahead of where most youngsters are - but even those were caught. Also amazing what a dude's statline will look like when his wideouts don't drop the ball 5 times (kudos to the receivers for that). Love the way he drifts out of the pocket around the goal line, buys time for something to open up and delivers the ball with some sizzle on it.

Antwaan Randle El is proving that if you give him a little cushion off the line and don't press him hard, he will make you play. That little slant would have been a TD had he not suffered the hammie injury, and if he plays the second half you can't convince me he doesn't go for 175 yards yesterday even without Santana there to compliment him.

The old goats - and I say that lovingly - should get game balls. Keenan McCardell comes in here having not played a game since like the third week of preseason and having been on the team all of a six days and goes out and makes two key catches. And James Thrash, what can you say about that guy? The ultimate team guy and a total selfless warrior. Fills Santana's role, becomes the first WR other than Moss or Randle El to catch a pass this season and then, with Randle El out, drops the hammer on the Lions with that 62-yard punt return despite not having caught a punt all year prior to Sunday.

That's deep depth people.

I thought the O Line did a great job of limited Detroit's LBs - Ernie Sims had been looking like a rising star - and after a flow start Fabini settled down.

The overall offensive approach was vibrant for a change. I know the repeated direct snaps - especially in the second half with the lead - had some defensive players a little unnerved, but there was a lot more "going for the gusto" in that game plan and a lot less trying to manage things not to lose. Coming off the New York debacle, that was huge.

Loved to see Coach Joe spitting some fire on Friday afternoon at the media, and maybe this is all total psycho babble BS, but it seemed to carry over into the offensive mentality of this game. Of course, when you have a ManBeast in your backfield setting the physical tone for your offense, that helps too.

Which brings us to last but not least, Iron Mike Sellers. As the regulars have known since the origins of this blog (Training Camp Insider circa July 2006) I am in the tank for this dude, would have a No. 45 jersey with "Flesh Eater" on the back if I rooted for the Skins, etc.

Let's take a look at the first four times the man touches the ball Sunday:
First Qtr:
run for 5 on second and 1
Second Qtr:
catch pass for 4 on third and 2 (1st TD drive)
catch pass for 24 on 1 and 10 (second TD drive)
run for TD on 1st and goal

That's a first down/TD the first four times he touches the ball. Plus, that safety Kenoy Kennedy's jersey is still stuck in parts of Mike's teeth. That's levitation, Holmes.

Now, what do they need to work on?

Well, you can't put the ball on the ground 5 times (luckily they recovered four of them). (Weirdest stat of the entire game - teams combine for 9 fumbles but just one is recovered on either side).

The running game on the whole is still iffy (and with the shuffling of the line that's to be expected somewhat). The Lions are weak against the run, especially on the outside, and the Skins tried to get CP outside the tackles a bunch, a few times with great success. But over the last 3 games - including Philly when Randy went down - the Skins have rushed 95 times for 330 yards, a puny 3.47 average. That's more than a yard off of where Big Al wants them to be, and with 5 of the next 7 on the road, they are going to need to pound the rock.

Portis at least is chugging along at the NFL average clip in those 3 games (49 rushes for 201 yards - 4.1 per), but Ladell isn't anywhere close to the 2006 form now that he's a sub again (21 for 45 - 2.14, ouch).

Still trying to figure out the replay challenge on the third and 1 that got stuffed in the third quarter. Going to take a helluva camera angle to overturn that (as Green Bay later found out last night).

The punter needs to step up. Ups, sorry, just fell into an old habit there of MAH-Bs of yore. Dude put 3 of his 4 punts inside the 20. Booted one 52 yards. Dare we say the words "in-season contract extension?"

TALENT EVALUATOR, YOU ARE AN IDIOT!!!

GO SKINS 4-2 AFTER SIX GAMES!!! 10-6 BABYYYYYYYYYYY....

Posted by: bethesdaboy | October 8, 2007 1:48 PM

When the running game really starts to click, look out. I just hope the o-line continues to gel and build some continuity.

Posted by: Wes Mantooth | October 8, 2007 1:53 PM

Wow, you really BYGO Jasno. Nice.

Posted by: Dorf | October 8, 2007 1:55 PM

Anonymous Giants fan,
here to compare weekly records, per our agreement! Skins: 3-1. Giants: 3-2. Another interesting stat, since you spent so much time dissing JC. JC: 23-29, 248 yds, 2 TDs, 0 picks. Eli Manning: 13-25, 186 yds 2 TDs, 1 INT.

Skins still ahead....

Posted by: Alan | October 8, 2007 1:56 PM

Jason,

Go back to 1991 in September, a 23-0 win over the Eagles at home. I was there, and I recall the Skins D holding the Eagles (and Jim McMahon!) to less than 100 net yards. I think it was somewhere around 80...

Posted by: Shaun | October 8, 2007 1:56 PM

Not to be too critical... ARE was probably thinking of his hammy 1st and foremost...

But it seemed to me (this is going back to Jasno's ARE quote from the last thread) that ARE still could have scored on that 4th and 2 slant if he had kept running to the center of the field. I saw someone coming up from the right side (the other side had the 3 guys tailing him) but it didn't seem like that guy was going to catch him vs. the 3 that did.

We still got it in (thanks Mr. Sellers) so I can't complain too bad.

Nice catch and run ARE. YAC BABY!

Lloyd, Brandon catches a pass
Carlos Rogers has an INT
James Thrash shows he still has a heartbeat
Redskins demolish the competition
Jasno gushes over the Skins

If Buffalo wins tonight I'm going to build my bomb shelter and wait for the meteor to hit.

Cant wait to see this D matched up against the Packers, we need to SECURE turnovers and make them pay! Go skins!

I think I am one of the only people at fedex w/ a MIKE SELLERS #45 jersey... and boy did my man come through yesterday.

Posted by: sniksder | October 8, 2007 2:07 PM

keep your heads together people...this was a nice win all the way around...but it means nothing...

nice to dominate all facets of the game...get jc and the passing game clicking...especially w/the depth at wide receiver...seller getting involved..d looked awesome and made plays...so did teams...but really...i think both sides benefited from great game planning and a detroit team that was just waiting to be exposed/exploited on both sides of the ball...

keep it in perspective...we dont play the lions every week and we got a pretty tough schedule ahead...gotta win the games we're supposed to and maybe that is/will be the difference this year...can prolly steal some we arent supposed to as well...maybe this week against the pack...

still its an encourging performance all the way around...but thats all it is...remember the victory over the niners that jasno referred to above while BHGO...i remember that game and i rememver everyone thinking that game meant the rest of the season was smooth sailing...and we sailed right into a 5-6 record...

hopefully it in instills a lot of confidence in both the players and coaches and we can game plan to win instead of not to lose...especially in the second half...

enjoy a satisfying victory and keep the faith but keep it in perspective...

Now that is a post, JASNO! Good Stuff and well said...

Today is a good day. They just need to find a way to keep this team rolling on both sides of the ball. We don't want to hit a skid like we did in 2005 where lost way too many stupid games after starting the season strong.

I agree with WesMantooth, that once the running game gets clicking the ability of this offense should be impressive. Hopefully, this is mainly a matter of the O-Line still trying to Gel. They did look much better running the ball this week then we did against NY. And Detroit has some big boys in the middle of the that D-Line. but Green Bay's D is much better all around.

This game was a big step in the right direction for the entire team all around.

The good of Moss and El (2nd Half) being out for this game was it allowed JC to build some chemistry with the other guys and that should only help the offense in the coming weeks as they try to double team Moss or El....

I think will need our Running Game to be more productive against GB.

Hail!

F perspective! It's the day after a huge win over a team that a lot of people up here were nervous about. It's mini celebration time. We can bring perspective back after mid week.

They should think twice about putting 45 out there on special teams. I know he's a huge contributor, but it puts him at risk in a bad, bad way. Taylor is a super athlete, and can handle his own on teams, but Sellers is still a 280lb guy that other teams are going to be looking to damage on purpose now that he's so vital to the offense.

Posted by: sniksder | October 8, 2007 2:24 PM

I had to watch this game from home...but it looked to me like Big Mike was looking for a fan sporting his number, in the stands, so he could give that person the ball from his first touchdown.... unfortunantly, he didn't find anyone.

let this be a lesson. Mike is the man. we should all begin treating him with respect.

let's play the mike sellers nickname game.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 8, 2007 2:27 PM

See Bears vs. Packers last night. That's all the reasoning needed to believe the Skins will beat the Packers. And don't tell me the Bears D is better than ours. They are miles away from the Bears D of last year. And I don't even think it's necessary to bring up the Bears offense.

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 2:29 PM

I've never even seen a Mike Sellers jersey.... Where can you get one? I have been thinking about which jersey to get since Training Camp and have been leaning towards #17, but a Sellers would be a nice change up... He is the Man. I hope they send him out on pass routes a little more with the way he hauled that sucker in and plowed over Kennedy!

Posted by: E in VB | October 8, 2007 2:30 PM

Gregskins, They usually only show the close games from the previous week on NFL Replay. I doubt they show the 34-3 blowout.

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 2:30 PM

I have had the sellers jersey since he came back to the skins in 2004, & I have not missed a game at fedex since 2002... I have only seen one other person with the jersey.... i'd tell ya where i got it but i'd have to....

So, Me picking up JC and the 'Skins D in the RI Fantasy Post wasn't a bad idea after all, huh? That's what I call forward thinking.......

Unfortunately we only play one other team similar to these guys, and its next week. Their last in Rush Offense. But their D is a lot better.....

If I found a sellers jersey, I'd have probably bought it already. The guys hawking jersey's outside of the Metro station 2 weeks ago didn't have any Sellers jersey's, it would have made my decision a lot easier -I went with the CP instead.

And I don't want to buy from skins.com, I already give too much of my $ to danny boy. but if I find a sellers jersey on the street, I'm all about it!

fair enough...as long as its brought back...

just hate it when we have a good game and see everyone get all cocky and send their expectations through the roof...when that happens we always get slapped down to reality...case in point...philly game / giants game...

maybe im too superstitious...but just appease me and see if it works!!! ;)

btw...prolly have to get it custom made...but be sure to get Man Eater or Bone Crusher or the like as the name on that #45 jersey!!!

Oh I get it. When the Redskins play lousy and make all sorts of ridiculous personnel and coaching moves, there's Jason pointing it all out with negative facts and stats. But when the Redskin's put together a complete game and dominate their opponent across the board, all of a sudden his posts are one positive thing after another. Ridiculous!

Still love me some Sellers.

Sorry to put a damper on everyone's parade, but this WAS just Detroit. Detroit will be Detroit forever.

Also, I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but....

Al Saunders and Mike Martz were on the same team as recently as 7 years ago when Martz was running the greatest show on turf and winning Super Bowls. You didn't think Saunders knew exactly what (did I say exactly? I meant it too) Martz was going to do and what would be the best way to stop it?

You think GW came up with that game plan all by himself with no input from Saunders who, did I mentioned, won a Superbowl with Martz 7 years ago? They spent atleast 3 years on the same coaching staff together. He knows how Martz thinks.

Saunders should get a lot of credit. I don't know if the media ever picked up on this angle, but they should have.....

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 8, 2007 3:02 PM

If the Redskins are who we think they are, then they've got to do what all good teams do: beat the mediocre and bad teams, and beat them badly. Yeah, we didn't do that so much in week 1, but the Skins responded this week drubbing the lions the way they deserve to be drubbed. Sure, it's "just the Detroit Lions" but this is what we are supposed to do if we are a good team.

If you're such a hater, go take your Romo man-crush somewhere else.

Posted by: Dorf | October 8, 2007 3:10 PM

Umm... 4th? Wouldn't that work both ways? If Saunders was telling gWilliams about Martz's offense wouldn't Martz be telling the Lions defense the same thing? It's already be discussed and dragged through the mud, every team already knows what the good teams are going to do. They still have to stop it. gWilliams knew what Martz was going to do, ie: Titans vs. Rams Superbowl, and Redskins just plain out-played the Lions in every facet.

Posted by: both ways | October 8, 2007 3:11 PM

I understood the guy... a hit to the knee of a d lineman is essentially an attack on his livelihood. It was dirty on Green's part, but also understandable too. He wasn't going to make that block any other way...

But there is no excuse for taunting a man who's laying lifelessly on the ground. He got up, looked around for a flag, didn't see one and walked immediately over to Green and talked ish to his unconscious body. Messed up.

Posted by: Dorf | October 8, 2007 3:13 PM

Larry Bud,
Yea there should have been no celebration that was pretty bad, but you dont just dive at knees, especially when they dont see you. I was a lineman when I played and those hit hurt, and they will blow your knee out in a second. But again I dont like to see people go down like that but he shouldnt have done a block like that.

Posted by: SAK | October 8, 2007 3:14 PM

SAK, Dorf

I played DE at TC Williams in the 80's and then very briefly at FSU (That's Frostburg State, BTW)

I remember those hits by guuys bigger than Green. OK, maybe not bigger than Green but that played bigger positions. There's no way to defend either guy, really.

No, no, Larry. That would actually be the Motor City Mamas. I think someone was calling out Kenoy Kennedy for doing a poor imitation of a trip tackle after having his flabber ghasted, instead.

As to Mike Sellers, I'm settling for "The Pain Train", myself. Somehow, I take delight in the thought of Mike Sellers perhaps hollering "Wu-WOO!" as he bowls through people on a full head of steam. Mike is perhaps the closest incarnation to Terry Tate, Office Linebacker to 'grace' the team.

Hey I know those guys! That's Miami's starting lineup on offense isn't it?

The Green block hasn't been discussed on here that I saw.

I think it was pretty bad (dangerously low), but what Jackson did afterwards was just plain stupid.

If you watch it happen real-time you can see that Green is trying to help Ginn out on a busted play - he can't see where he's going to hit Jackson because he pretty much has his back to him. That doesn't excuse Green, but Jackson did himself no favours at all.

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 8, 2007 3:28 PM

I don't really have an issue with what Green did. CB's do that all the time to take down bigger dudes and it's a legal hit. I've watched Favre do that 10 times.

Taylor drilling that guy while he wasn't looking on the KO return was both more malicious and premeditated. Don't be lemmings to the media hype that's all it is. No concussion + no theatrics by that lineman and no one says a word.

Posted by: Skinz | October 8, 2007 3:29 PM

Woah - whut a great feeling after the gints debacle, eh?

sKINS Just demoralized them. And for you 'just detroit' people, detroit beat Chitown setting an NFL record & chitown just beat an undefeated Green Bay.

I also like that Detroit put plenty up on the Goils too. That bodes well for November!

Bring on Favre!

I disagree. Martz was the Offensive Coordinator and Saunders was the WR Coach. So, Martz had the say the final say so on everything. It has been well documented that Martz is a hard SJK and he's going to do it his way or no way. Which is evident by the fact he never leaves anyone to protect the QB (ala Spurrier).

Of course everyone knows what everyone is doing, but like I said Saunders worked with this guy for 3 years and they won a SB together so I am sure that GW and Saunders got together and Saunders basically explained the basis as to what this guy is all about and what the key to the offense is. To me, it was evident in what happened. Read the Mike Wise article and see how he writes that GW was no where near his usual self and all this restraint he had not to blitz but be patient. I hardly doubt he just woke up one day this past 2 weeks and saw the light......

Posted by: 4th | October 8, 2007 3:29 PM

I agree there is no way to stop a block like that, when your running full speed its worse, I use to step on the person who tried to block me like that thats the only way to kinda teach someone to stop. But to talk trash when someone is knocked out, theres no excuse for that.

Did I blog that out loud?

You want me to knock you up Larry? I fear that may be medically impossible!

Do you mean fags (cigarettes) or fags (student at British public school, used to do menial tasks for another older student)? Either way, I probably can't help you old fruit.

OK,OK

*hugs* to all my blogger peeps. Great article JLaC. Today was starting out so well ... coming of a win, getting to sleep in for an extra hour because of a semi-annual teeth cleaning appt. at the dentist ... then it falls apart. Can you believe I have a cavity? OMG!! Haven't had one of thos in over 30 years. Then, to top it off, I get notice of a special assessment from my condo board of directors telling me I have to pay $1500 to repair some pond erosion damage. WTF?

Did I actually see BLoyd catch a pass yesterday? I guess that would be the $10,000,000 catch, huh?

Mondays *sigh*

*hugs* to every one.

You're forgetting...

God allows Taylor to hit people like that.

Posted by: Dorf | October 8, 2007 3:34 PM

SAK,

I usually found them somewhere on the field later in the game. In my case it was usually a TE and I would shove my fist between his face and his mask coming off the line. I only ever got called for it once.

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 8, 2007 3:34 PM

Skinz,
When tackling someone its different, you have a chance to react, and taylors hit was to the body not at the knees. I would have noticed even had he not been hurt, the dude did a flip after the hit it would have been hard not to notice.

Posted by: SAK | October 8, 2007 3:35 PM

Thanks. I figured they probably wouldn't show the replay but thought to ask. I'm a Tampa resident now, although I grew up in NE DC in the Kingman Park area right near old RFK stadium. Talk about memories! I could feel hear/feel the roar after a Skins TD. I was able to watch the 1st 3 games down here but they didn't air this one on FOX. Gonna have to catch them on the Ticket.

Posted by: SAK | October 8, 2007 3:37 PM

As a college tight end who took a number of hits to the knees from smaller d-backs, I hate the kind of block that Trent put on that guy. But it's legal. However, a guy with that many prior concussions probably should not be doing it.

There's no room for that kind of trash-talking in that, or any other, situation in football. Disgusting.

Posted by: GKC | October 8, 2007 3:37 PM

I have to agree with SAK on the Taylor hit, though he was making a block not tackling on the Thrash return.

Taylor hit the guy in the chest on a play where the guy should have known he was gonna git blocked.

Green went low on a fairly blind angle which is really bad.

Maybe he was just asking Trent if he was okay or whether Trent would like him to call an ambulance or something like that?

Ummm.. isn't that Gregg Williams job? Watch oodles of game film, figure out what does work and what doesn't work and adjust your game plan. I mean in a few of the post game articles he is quoted in saying he noticed that Kitna's completion rating against the blitz was actually pretty high. Maybe he realized he was better off not blitzing. Maybe it had more to do with both Martz and Kitna saying they don't even need to run public in papers all over the place after the win over the Bears, that set off the light bulb.

Why is it so hard to believe that when a team proclaims itself a pass first, pass only team and the stats and film completely back it up, that a defensive coordinator being paid as much as Williams can't figure out that stacking the box may not be his best option?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 8, 2007 3:43 PM

Fewer beans LB :),

My point is it happens all the time and it's perfectly legal. That idiot just freaked out.

Posted by: Skinz | October 8, 2007 3:45 PM

As long as Taylor had his head in front of the shoulder pads and not below the waist, the hit was totally legal.

When the special teams coach tells the coverage team every day in practice to "keep your head on a swivel," he means it. Else, it might go rolling off after the Reaper wields his scythe.

Posted by: GKC | October 8, 2007 3:46 PM

Sak, it's called a cut block and it's perfectly legal 5 yards on either side of the line of scrimmage (or 7 yards). The Broncos use the chop block often and while some people have tried to get the rule changed it's never gotten enough votes.

Posted by: Skinz | October 8, 2007 3:48 PM

Posted by: talent evaluator | October 8, 2007 03:41 PM

I believe he admitted to as much during post game interviews, basically saying he was pissed off about the cheap shot Green had made. Though I do wonder if he was taunting or yelling.

Posted by: FBChick | October 8, 2007 3:49 PM

Give credit to the guy from Houston. He admitted that his 'ish talkin may have been over the top, but offered no apologies, and rightfully so. Goin' for the knees in any sport is morally wrong. Athletes know that a man's knees serves as the heart for the career. Once your knee is finished so is your career. With that said you really hate to see Trent Green go down like that again. Give credit to Green also for doing what many QB's opt not to do. On the other hand, Green should've known he can't de-cleat the guy head up, physics won't allow it. If he wanted to delay the defender, it's obvious that he wasn't going to block him, he should've just kind of did one of those back/chest bumps, in other words, throw yourself at his torso. Some will say thats suicide and maybe so, but 80% of the time don't you see the QB as far as possible from the play when a pass is not involved. So if you didn't like the injury to Trent Green, think it was his fault in the first place, or that the d-linemen from the Texans is a grade-A piece of crap for taunting, relax and chill. It's just the sport we all love and crave, and if injuries were never involved it would have been one of the top plays on Sunday. Football is like everything else, taking the good with the bad.

Posted by: Inigo Montoya | October 8, 2007 3:50 PM

For the record I didn't mean to suggest that what Taylor did was against the rules or cheap. Both hits were legal and therefore I have no problem with either one.

I find it funny that a 315 lb lineman, who would use all his weight to hit and fall on T. Green and then lay on him for the duration of a play given the opportunity, would act that way.

or to use a line from our friends Walter, "Am I the only one who give a SJK about the rules anymore?"

bigfish,

I stopped reading after grazing it and reading this:

Adam Archuletta. Pay a guy a boat load of money to come and play in D.C. and then put him at free safety instead of at strong (where he belongs) when he gets here

and this:

The Redskins moved Antwaan Randle El to the number two spot. With all due respect to El, he just isn't a number two guy and now he's just playing at a position that doesn't really allow his particular skill set to be showcased. He had a great first game, but he's really struggled to get open and make much impact at receiver since then.

Anon - This isn't the 1st game of the year. And the Lions were 3-1 coming in to the game. Everyone has plenty of Game tape on these guys. They played Da Bears last week. You don't think the Bears have a Great Defense? You weren't watching the game last night, then. The comments during the week are directly related to Martz being a hard SJK, as I said earlier. Who better to know this than Saunders?

Last year GW had the same job and the Redskins D failed. GW was/is a hard SJK (Just like Martz). They both refuse to change. That's what JLaC was pounding on about the offseason about not retooling the D Line. GW can't be a hard SJK and decide to change his mentality for one game. Think before you write......

fish--

Thanks for putting up the link with Lloyd's fingerprints on it. Just amazing -- Lloyd's using it to trash not only the coaches but Thrash, Randle El, McCardell, and Caldwell. What a great teammate!

I wonder what the guy's agent says to him? "Keep it up Brandon. You're looking at a big contract and huge signing bonus next year after the 'Skins let you go."

Posted by: talent evaluator | October 8, 2007 4:14 PM

JLaC wrote yesterday before the game:
"A few things got cut from my story today...including what I thought was one of the more important sentences in the whole piece.

So I'll paste it here:

The Redskins ignored their maligned defensive line this offseason - a potent four-man pass rush is mandated this month - explaining that an improved secondary will create more time for the linemen to attack. That thesis will be tested against the next four opponents."

Well, JLaC? How did you say you liked your crow?? I'm thrilled the Redskins answered your every call in yesterdays thread "Can You Dig It? (AKA, Lions, Come Out To Play)" You sound awfully cheery today after the thumping the 'Skins gave Detroit yesterday. I hope you aren't becoming a bandwagon journalist. In fairness however, I did like your post today: Informative, unbiased, and entertaining (except for your little dig at JG: "Every single swinging soul I saw pretty much played his guts out."). Unless you sit in on the coaches meetings, none of us can truly say why they make the decisions they make. Thanks for giving them some props today.

I know I shouldn't be responding to Anons but I can't help it. Read above. First he says next FOUR opponents, not one. Second he says it will be tested. He didn't say it will be proven false.

Are you seriously telling me I didn't think? But somehow deciding that our good defensive show yesterday is based solely on a hint from our OC who played with the other teams head coach 7 years ago, makes more sense and more thought then thinking we hired a guy with half a brain? Yeah... I get that!

First and foremost, you don't have game film to have a light bulb moment if it's the first game of the year.. so yeah, I obviously got that.. but aparently you didn't THINK it through well enough and made the comment anyway.

Do I think the bears have a good defense? Never said they didn't. Where in my post did I even make that claim? What they didn't have is a good enough offense to keep them defense off the field and give them a break, so they were able to hold the lions to 3 points as well until in the forth quarter, a worn down defense finally couldn't keep up anymore. At least I "THINK" hard enough to know our good defensive play had as much to do with our offense performing and controlling time of posession, as it did with GW defensive strategy.

And last years debacle? I never said the guy was mistake free, but he obviously learned his lesson. I mean come on.. the defense managed to fall apart two weeks ago as well, so I ain't claiming GW is god or anything. Just saying I doubt Al played that big of a part in the defense changing it's ways.

Posted by: talent evaluator | October 8, 2007 04:25 PM

Well, yes, it would be something like that. Or "kicking a guy's SJK while he's down".

In this case, though, the guy had it coming. He had the audacity to proclaim to the people sitting around him that our D couldn't stop the Lions offense at the start of the first Lions' offensive series....

Posted by: FlimFlam | October 8, 2007 4:35 PM

I wonder how many Redskins fans go to Dallas games when they're playing some other random non-NFC East team just so they can boo Dallas? Not saying it doesn't happen, just curious.

DC area Dallas fans are haters by nature.

FlimFlam--Hey, I'm all for the low-hanging fruit. Makes sense to me. That's where I always start, and usually where I finish. And the guy does deserve it. But, never get too busy with a Lions fan that you neglect the real enemy -- Dallas fans getting kicked out of the stadium.

It's great reading the Detroit paper right now:

Their running game set up a precision passing attack by Jason Campbell. The pass rush from the defensive line let the secondary choke off the passing lanes.

There was no answer from the Lions. They couldn't run, pass, block or defend. They couldn't even score a touchdown. They looked like Washington tourists who'd lost their street guides.

The Cowboys fans in the DC area are nothing but trailer park trash who were raised to hate the Redskins, bandwagon jumpers or they were abused by their Redskins fan parents and are looking for a way to get back at them. (Sorry SMACK - not you)

Maybe that's because the Cowboys fans you see are all Texans, and Texans are just good people. They can't help it if their local team is the Cowboys. Being Texans they have to be good fans for the local team. Our Cowboy fans are mostly not-Texans. And the ones that are Texans probably got kicked out of the state for not fitting in very well.

Just a theory.

When losing by 41 points in 4th quarter, it's wise to use your backup QB and 3rd string RB, SMACK.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 8, 2007 5:36 PM

SMACK, don't forget the wells. Most 'Skins fans volunteer their free time building fresh water wells in Africa. Oh, and curing AIDS and cancer. It's what we do. We don't need the accolades, it's just who we are.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 5:37 PM

You got us there, SMACK--thanks for the pass anyway.

Speaking of passing...that game tonight might be *too* nauseating to watch.

Who'm I kidding, I'm gonna watch anyway.

And Diddy, good catch. There was definitely an argument. Multiple dictionaries checked. Possibly a visit to Urban Dictionary. No way a bunch of writers can do a headline like that and not argue about the spelling.

Posted by: redskirt | October 8, 2007 5:38 PM

SORRY SISSY REDSKINETTE FANS you have no chance against BOYS! They are CONTENDERS and as always REDSKINETTES are PRETENDERS!!

Posted by: SISSY FANS | October 8, 2007 5:38 PM

Campble soup isnt even in the same group of QBs who suck? Cant play DETROIT LIONS every week!

Posted by: wawawa | October 8, 2007 5:40 PM

Diddy--

Well put. Personally, I'd rather dig a well for a poor African than watch the Redskins beat Dallas. That's what it means to bleed burgundy and gold.

This Skins fan spent his Pulitzer award money on prosthetic limbs for victims of random dismemberment. It's a silent epidemic.

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 8, 2007 5:45 PM

Oh, and I'm doing research into human spontaneous combustion. Nothing would bring me greater satisfaction, not even a 'Girls loss, than knowing that I could get Spinal Tap Back together.

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 8, 2007 5:49 PM

Larry Bud--Don't you have anything left to send to Trent Green or Gus Frerotte -- QB's who are victims of bashing their heads against walls?

Posted by: talent evaluator | October 8, 2007 5:50 PM

SMACK, you offer up a prediction for tonight yet?

I'm going 28-20 Cowboys.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 5:51 PM

Since I seem to have the Bully Pulpit, allow me to bend your ears on another pet cause of mine; the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide.

Some colleagues of mine have put together a very informative site, partially funded by Nobel funds from Redskins fans, that sheds light on this terribly frightening threat to our way of life. Take a look and see if you aren't as upset about this as I am.

Nice blog...that should be evidence during the live chat on friday when all the naysayers come out saying you have an agenda against the team. if they give you something to rave about, you will....and that was quite some rave!
You rock dude!

Posted by: CANTREPORTA! | October 8, 2007 5:53 PM

Love corny, but i think i'm gonna watch tonight on mute. Romo has had a good start, but cmon! How do these "analysts" get off comparing romo to favre? It is nauseating(sp?)

Posted by: nah | October 8, 2007 5:54 PM

please learn how to speak English

Random politics thing...Dan Balz's blog today is awesome. It shows what anyone who has actually met Rudy Giuliani knows: once you see him up close and personal, you instantly hate the guy. It doesn't surprise me in the least that he's now in 3rd/4th in Iowa. The guy is an SJKhole.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 5:55 PM

TE,

I am truly spread too thin. But aren't we all? Redskins fans, that is. I'll do my best to finish up my seventh doctorate in nueroscience and get right on it, though.

I think Frerrote may be beyond help, however.

Posted by: Larry Bud | October 8, 2007 5:56 PM

How giulani is even mentioned is a candidate is a mystery to me. Oh wait, w was "elected" twice! I guess that explains it.

Posted by: nah | October 8, 2007 5:58 PM

is there a link to the blog on giuliani? i had an impression he was a good guy and not a bunghole.

Here's the blog: http://blog.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2007/10/08/post_123.html?hpid=topnews

Not surprisingly, the WashPo's political bloggers (Dan Balz and Chris Cilizza) are top notch.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 6:03 PM

random topic - Anyone else ever try to listen to the Skins online on TripleX Radio? Since I live on the west coast i'm probably not picking up any of the 3 stations so I gave their online player a try and it sucked! They had about 30 seconds of game play followed by a few minutes of random elevator music and then some silence (this pattern repeated for awhile but it didn't always include the game play).

Sorry to be late to the party but I was teaching my autistic students how to splice genes in order to cure autism. Took all day which was a little longer than usual.

Posted by: sfskin | October 8, 2007 6:07 PM

Okay here is my lame Mike Sellers nickname contribution:

Iron Chef - cause everytime he gets in the game he cooks up something special. . . I know ppphhpptt . . . it's Monday.

Posted by: sfskin | October 8, 2007 6:09 PM

David, lots of people have complained about the free player on redskins.com. You have five options:

1. Subscribe to NFL Field Pass from nfl.com. You get paid-for radio broadcasts from all teams.
2. Get Sirius satellite radio.
3. Get DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket.
4. Go to a bar and watch.
5. Skip it altogether and go dig wells in Africa.

For those who want to watch from an international location, Yahoo broadcasts games over the Internets. It is not available within North America. This is because of DirecTV's exclusivity. I suspect Internet rights will be HUGE when the TV contracts are renewed in 3-4 years. For now though, you're SOL. I would think the addressable market for people willing to pay $250 (the price of Sunday Ticket's SuperFan package) for the entire season over the Internets is rather large.

For those who get the broadcasts but travel a lot (like me), I highly recommend Slingbox.

And just to be clear this week (well after this evening).

F Green Bay

Posted by: sfskin | October 8, 2007 06:07 PM

sfskin, Does this mean that these autistic students were more autistic than your usual autistic students? Or were you perhaps multitasking -- say, getting stays of execution for wrongfully convicted prisoners?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 8, 2007 6:16 PM

some people call it a kaiserbox, i call it a slingbox. mmmmmmmhhhhmmmmm

Posted by: billly bob thornton | October 8, 2007 6:17 PM

David: Try Sirius radio. Its what I have to do for the games not on tv in TN. its just $12 and some change each month compared to $50 something for sunday ticket. HAIL

Posted by: RockyTopSkin | October 8, 2007 6:19 PM

I'm fairly certain Mike Martz got 4x the number of TV cutaways that Rod whatever-his-name-is got...

I think that's pretty funny, actually...

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 6:20 PM

Re-watching the game (via Slingbox, from a Starbucks in SF, as it turns out)...

Campbell really was brilliant on those goal line plays. The scrambling for time to hit Sellers for the TD, then Cooley for the 2... That's veteran QB play there.

Now, I'm also in total agreement with the "It's the Lions, ladies" guy (unless he meant it was the Lions Ladies, in which case I question his vision, but I digress). The Lions stink: no pass protection, no pass rush. You would think that a team that is going to pride itself on its passing game would field an offensive line capable of blocking for the pass. But I guess not.

I hope the team doesn't let this go to their head and that they come out soul swinging on Sunday...

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 6:29 PM

F Pressure! That has to be the most awesome play in that 1,810,280 page playbook.

Quick, trade Brunell to the Dolphins

Posted by: Mombo | October 8, 2007 6:31 PM

Miami Dolphins quarterback Trent Green was knocked unconscious with a grade-three concussion -- the most severe -- and he'll undergo further tests on the career-threatening injury to determine his future.

Posted by: Mombo | October 8, 2007 6:32 PM

I wonder what we could get for Betts and Brunell to Miami? Maybe a three-way trade with KC for Priest Holmes.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 6:33 PM

BTW, Tim Ryan fans: just caught at the tail-end of the game, Sam Rosen mentioned that he and Ryan will be back in DC for the Cardinals game. Probably one of the first analysts I've ever listened to that was worth not-muting...maybe Madden way back in the day and Matt Millen as well...

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 6:37 PM

Mombo,

Delhomme's out for the year, too, with elbow surgery. Panthers and Dolphins will bid mightily for Brunnell. We might get mustard and swiss on our ham sandwich.

Posted by: talent evaluator | October 8, 2007 6:37 PM

So negative... Plus, I think we should hold out for Christian Okoye

Anyone see the hit on Dallas Clark? He was screaming like a little girl!!!

Posted by: kost52 | October 8, 2007 8:21 PM

Some good highlights yesterday, the Reaper hit on special teams, Kenoy Kennedy running into a brick wall, Andre Carter bringing out the WWE moves.

Anyone know where I might be able to see the Rogers INT? It's not in the NFL.com highlights package, and wasn't on Sportscentre.

Posted by: kost52 | October 8, 2007 8:26 PM

kost, that's because (shhhh) it didn't really happen. Double Move dropped the pass and the Lions came back to win. We're all in denial.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 8:28 PM

kost are you getting the Cowboys game down there? How about my boy RVP?? Arsenal baby!

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 8:28 PM

ESPN should stop doing MNF. Buffalo is hosting the game tonight but all they ESPN has talked about is the flippin' Cowboys. I realize that Dallas is the so-called "sexy" pick but they are showing Buffalo no respect. The Bills fans should wage a complaint to the network.

Posted by: Lisa | October 8, 2007 8:28 PM

Emmitt speaking English is like a one-legged man trying to back a stick-shift up a steep hill.

Damn I'm p*ssed those rocket packs never went mainstream. We get Segways, come on.

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 8:31 PM

Is there really any chance the Bills win this game?

In other news Yankees are losing 4-0. F the Yankees!

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 8:33 PM

kost,

The INT is at the end of this youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMYk-Yv1YmM

Posted by: JustMe | October 8, 2007 8:34 PM

Nothing to talk about in Buffalo. Talk about your lake-effect boredom.

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 8:35 PM

I guess TK answered my question.

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 8:38 PM

SMACK, you are on fire. I was just thinking the same thing about those jet packs. The last time I saw one was in one of those 1980s Super Bowls and prior to that, an episode of "CHiPs".

"Lake Effect Boredom" is awesome.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 8:38 PM

I'm watching on mute. Who is the fat guy in the Bills hat?

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 8:40 PM

Was he committing crimes and escaping via jet-pak, and then Ponch 'n' Jon tracked 'em down...

alright game time gotta focus

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 8:42 PM

Ok, maybe I jumped the gun on ESPN. The actual game telecast seems more Bills related. But the Pregame Show reeked of Cowboys.

Posted by: Lisa | October 8, 2007 8:42 PM

Nice fake by the dude that Reaper nearly decapitated.

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 8:45 PM

SMACK - Yeah it'll be on, I might watch the replay tonight. RVP saved me this week, I have to give you some credit mate, I was a bit unsure about letting Henry go, but boy hasn't it paid off! I don't think many people expected this kind of result. The game the other night was awesome to watch wasn't it!

Posted by: 4th via Home Floor | October 8, 2007 8:51 PM

I think Romo overcooked that one a little!

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 8:52 PM

Going back to my previous comments on Romo. He cannot complete passes from the pocket. He is only effective outside of the pocket.

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 8:52 PM

Bills might as well onsides kick here. Everything else is working. And buy some Lotto tickets too.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 8:53 PM

Going back to my previous comments on Romo. He cannot complete passes from the pocket. He is only effective outside of the pocket.

Posted by: 4th | October 8, 2007 8:55 PM

It'll be interesting to see how Lee Evans goes tonight, during the pre-season, a lot of 'experts' were touting him as the next big thing, but he's started the season terribly. Maybe the National stage will kick him into gear.

Posted by: kost52 | October 8, 2007 8:56 PM

wtf! jaws just said excellent job by romo when talking about the pick! Get off of him already!

Posted by: nah | October 8, 2007 8:57 PM

Sorry SMACK, but I just can't stand your peeps being undefeated.......

Posted by: 4th | October 8, 2007 9:02 PM

Smack - I wouldn't call it a loss yet but if the Bills show us that they actually have an offense then this could be a better game than we expected.

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 9:02 PM

No bigfish, I was just referring to my comment earlier today. But really even I had gotten arrogant about this game, and nothing is working on offense.

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 9:06 PM

Bills D swarming tonight. Impressive.

bigfish, I think there's a better chance of Double Move catching an interception and Brandon Lloyd catching a pass in the same game...

Wait...

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 9:08 PM

The Wash Times is calling Sellers "The Force" owing to Joe Gibbs calling him 'a force' after last night's game. Now there's a nickname....... as much as I do dig 'Pain Train'.

Posted by: Heath Shuler | October 8, 2007 9:18 PM

Posted by: bigfish | October 8, 2007 9:23 PM

Yeah, I think they were cute and plucky for a quarter. This baby's about to be over. All you East Coast peeps might as well switch over to "Heroes" now.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 9:27 PM

Really, nobody saw that bogus graphic? Someone is getting sjtcanned tomorrow. Or maybe promoted. That was almost as good as the Howie Sucks banner from like 1978

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 9:28 PM

The skins really shoulda been more conservative.

Remember the mantra joe-

Take a knee, take a knee.

Posted by: 10 cent | October 8, 2007 9:31 PM

aaaaagggg has been on pretty much every single MNF broadcast this season. I have no idea why they keep making the same mistake, but if you go back and look at the previous games, it's in every single one. Usually the production team will build all the graphics in the Chyron with placeholders for stats or whatever. Not sure if it's a bunch of interns running the truck for these games or not, but it's pretty amateur.

Posted by: P Diddy | October 8, 2007 9:32 PM

I'm still pretty sure we got this.

Posted by: SMACK | October 8, 2007 9:45 PM

If only poor Buffalo could get some run blocking happening, they would win this game. Otherwise, unless they trade for Trent Green at the half to put a nasty knee-block on Jason Witten, I think the PoBoys are gonna take this one.
