NFL Says No Change To Thursday Game/Redskins Say Same Thing (UPDATED)

Just got off the phone with Greg Aiello, Senior VP of Communications for the NFL, who says that to the best of his knowledge there has never been one discussion about moving next Thursday's game between the Redskins and Bears. It has garnered no consideration.

Aiello said the NFL has not been contacted by either team regarding moving the game, there have been no internal discussions at the league office about it, yet he hears the same constant rumors and speculation we all do about this topic. Aiello says the only precedent for moving games in the past that he could immediately recall dealt with earthquakes and the Katrina situation with the Saints last year, obviously, and the league has always operated in this case as if next week's schedule would proceed as normal.

"I have not heard any discussion of any of it," Aiello said. "We haven't been contacted about it, not that I am aware of. There's nothing to it. No one here has heard about it. It's just some rumor that won't go away, but there is nothing to it."

Again, perhaps, at some point the Redskins could contact the league about this, but no one at the NFL office is expecting it at this point. We're now a week away from that game and if the Redskins have not petitioned for a schedule change at this point, then it's hard to see it happening.

Jason Reid is checking with the Redskins to make sure that by chance they have not called the league within the last few hours to ask to move the game, so I'll post whatever feedback he gets, but this appears to be a moot issue.

UPDATE: Chris Helein, head of Skins PR, said the Redskins have not asked to change the game and have no plans to ask the league to change the game. So, finally, this should be resolved once and for all.

Personally, I can't understand why the Skins have not asked the NFL to reschedule the Thursday game. The Skins are going through an extremely taxing time, already have a short week, and a funeral to attend. Not at least asking to reschedule would appear to put them in a great disadvantage.

JLC - You have been the consummate professional in covering this story. All facts, no speculation, rumors, or opinions. The Redskins Insider has been my #1 source for info since the story broke. My opinions of you have completeley changed in the last 4 days. Thanks for giving us what we so dearly needed throughout the week: Truth and Raw Emotion from inside Redskins Park. You've won over a new reader in the process, and have proven to me that all media is not out to stir the pot. Thanks again, and RIP #21 - the backfield of heaven just got one hellava safety.....

Moving that Bears game makes sense to me. Its obviously way to late to move the Bills game, but because its FedEx revenues -- and a game that one half of the fans are not going to be able to see (Thursday night NFLN) -- seems like it would be fair that THIS team not have to play again after only a three day break (subtracting out Monday for funeral services, including travel).

Also, searching the web to find out more about his lady, I found a Miami latino site that had some info on her. Something tells me their daughter is going to be really stunning when she grows up. http://hurricanesports.cstv.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/garcia_jackie00.html

I wouldn't expect the Redskins to ask for a change here.

The NFL, however, should have stepped in regardless of anyone asking and moved this game to Saturday night as I've heard suggested (I think it was Mike Turrico but not sure).

Lisa - You have to also take into consideration the whole production and logistics that have already been pre-planned for that Thursday game. Also, I would assume Monday would be a day off for players regardless if the Taylor situation had arisen. So, funeral or no funeral, they would still be left with Tuesday and Wednesday to practice/prepare for that Thursday game. I know it's going to be tough on the players after laying a friend to rest, but unfortunately they'll have to play as scheduled.

Lovie Smith told the Chicago Sun Times that the Bears would agree to move the game to either Dec 8, 9, or 10 should the Redskins make that request.

Fine, This will give us more time to prepare for the Giants. Just need to get through the two home games which are winnable. The Giant game will be key for our Season.

This is surprising. Seems like the NFL could take the initiative and 'do the right thing' by moving the game to Sunday the 9th.

Perhaps Coach Joe did not request because he feared if the request was denied, his team would then adopt a victim's mindset, lose their edge and go out and lay an egg?

Is the Lovie Smith statement a fact?

If so, I wish the Skins would have jumped on that.

Too bad the NFL did not think about the impact a murder might have on a team in a short week, rather than having a single game on a Thursday night [$$$$$]

chris_skins_balt:
Logistics can be overcome. The NFL did it a few years ago when they moved San Diego's home Monday night game to Arizona when they were having wildfires, and almost did it again this year for the same reason. Of course, there was the Katrina year Saints and the postponing of all NFL games after 9/11.

Monday is usually team meeting and film day, so they probably wouldn't normally have that day off and in fact are losing that time.

This game should be moved to the weekend, but nobody in the NFL administration has asked me yet.

Taupecat - Yes, that's true but in those cases, the NFL was forced to move the games as it was impossible for either team to play under those circumstances.

Don't get me wrong, I wish they would move it but I don't see it happening even if both teams were okay with it.

Maybe the Redskins just figure they should push on through the two games in 5 days and get it behind them as soon as possible so they can catch their breath for the division matchup against the Giants. Maybe the players and coaches discussed it privately, and decided that they'd rather immerse themselves in football instead of asking for a couple extra days. Could be any number of reasons.

The bottom line is that Roger Goodell SHOULD have taken the initiative to at least discuss moving the game in light of this situation. It's simply amazing to me that the league never even considered the possibility, unlike many, many other people, hence all the "rumors".
