Portis and No. 21
There's been a lot of discussion about whether Clinton Portis will request a change to No. 21...Dan Steinberg reports:
"21 was Sean's number, and for me to put it on, I can't go out and emulate Sean's style. I can't go out and be Sean Taylor. There's no need to drag it along or carry along, or even tease the fans or the people that admire him in putting that jersey on. All I can do is go out and give everything I have. That's what Sean did week in and week out, time after time, always. I've been telling you for a while, that was the best player I've ever seen. For me to go out and put that jersey on, I can't live up to those expectations and I can't be Sean Taylor, so I won't even try it."

I would love to see Portis wear 21, at least for the Bills game, but I totally understand where he is coming from.

Agreed. No one should wear TAYLOR'S number. I would still like to see him in the ring of honor.

I am trying to get up to DC for the Bears game. Is there any close-by hotels that I could walk to the stadium?
Thanks for any information

Im not sure about the jersey number controversy. On one hand I do like the idea of someone wearing the number, but not the name. I dont want to see a "Taylor" running around out there without it being the "man".
I envision a impressive, emotional victory on sunday and then a win at home versus the bears. That will set up a huge game against the giants in ny. The playoffs are the best way to honor Sean.

This week, Espn radio's Colin Cowherd has been outrageous in his accusations and assumptions about Sean Taylor. Please tell Colin how you feel by emailing him on this page:

It is the right thing to do not to wear 21

slckrick - If you want to stay at a hotel, I would suggest any one near a Metro stop. FedEx has a Blue line stop nearby. It is a little bit of a walk from the metro to the stadium (but less than a mile), but it is probably worth it sdo you don't have to brave the traffic. Weekday gameday traffic is the worst.

I agree. I think Portis is right in not wearing 21. I know a lot of people are against it, but I think the Redskins should considering retiring the number. I understand the arguments against that, but I think the magnitude of the tragedy warrents its consideration.

Barno - What has he been saying. I heard him for a few minutes today and agreed with most of what he was saying, but didn't catch the whole conversation.

I am not saying this in a bad mean or blaming way. But technically Portis been wearing Taylors number since day one. Taylor wore 36 initially, and then 21. He was 26 in college so in the pros he danced on both sides of that number. He preferred 21 over 36 but smoot had it when he got there. Portis been wearing 26 the whole time, so he is already wearing Taylors number...

I just want chants of TAY-LOR ... TAY-LOR...TAY-LOR raining down over Fed-Ex on Sunday!!

slckrick - I am looking on Google and if it is the one on corporate drive, then it is pretty far. I don't remember there being any hotels within walking distance. Could be wrong though...

If they don't retire the number, give it to Landry. He's such a fantastic raw talent. Let him look at that number every time he puts on a jersey and be inspired to match Sean's intensity.
Otherwise, don't give it to anyone.

Sickrick --
Wearing Taylor's jersey means wearing his number.
Where did you ever get the idea that someone would wear Taylor's name as well?

Agree that CP not wear 21. His work ethic is not the same. Perhaps he can commemorate 21's memory by adopting ST intensity; his drive to succeed; and his willingness to make other players suffer who dared to enter his territory. CP: stop avoiding hits, lower your shoulder, stay in bounds, make others pay for trying to stop you. Thats how 21 would have done it.

Good Morning Everyone,
I love the sentiment regarding wanting to do something special for Sean like retiring his number.
However, has anyone stopped to think how many players have had their number retired?
#33 Sammy Baugh
That's it.
Absolutely, I hate it that Sean was murdered, but having only played three full seasons Sean did not deserve to have his number retired if Sonny J #9 or Darrell Green #28 have not had their numbers retired.
I don't think being murdered is reason to have your number retired. It is reason to be mourned and missed, and so we continue to mourn w/ the family and the Redskin nation, and Redskin organization.
Posted by: RedskinRay1 | November 30, 2007 9:12 AM
Exactly. Darrell Green, Sonny, Art Monk, Riggins, the Hogs...the list of Redskins more worthy of having their numbers retired is long. With all due respect, you earn that on the field, not off, and three good season on lackluster teams doesn't really get it done. But it's a nice sentiment.

it is ironic that Portis is wearing The Reaper's # from college. And another coincidence (correct me if i'm wrong) but I believe Taylor played some rb in high school. 5 straight to the playoffs and another trip to Tampa Bay.
Hail!

Jason, It woud be interesting to see what Buck Ortega has to say since he seemed to know him well from reading this. Buck was on the Skins practice squad (i believe) and had some stellar preseason games with the Skins before being a late cut....
