Redskins Insider, by Jason La Canfora Redskins Insider

Sunday Details

Everyone at FedEx Field should be in their seat by 12:15, as I mentioned before.

CBS will be televising the moment of silence before the game, I've been told, and several people have emailed me about being able to watch all of the pre-game activities.

Much of it will be part of a video tribute the team has put together, and the Redskins expect that you will be able to view that on-line at their website at some point after the ceremony. CBS may end up broadcasting that video on Sunday as well.

No one is scheduled to speak, and the ceremonies will be subdued. Fans will be given commemorative towels and the team and its employees will fly to Miami early Monday morning for the funeral.

Still a very somber vibe around Redskins Park. Former center Cory Raymer, who lives in the area, just stopped by with his young children to say hello and express his remorse with his former coaches and teammates, just as former kicker John Hall did earlier in the week.

Towels? They better not have a sponsor logo on them.

Posted by: jrraley | November 30, 2007 2:46 PM

I hope they sell the towels on line for those that can't make it to the game.

Posted by: jm220 | November 30, 2007 2:46 PM

Agreed jrraley. All it need is "21 Sean Taylor".

Posted by: jm220 | November 30, 2007 2:47 PM

Towels sponsored by Johnny Rocket's and Six Flags.

Just a theory.

5th!

Posted by: nunzio768 | November 30, 2007 2:51 PM

Jason, have you heard anything from Lavar Arrington this week? It appeared to me that in 2004 and 2005 Lavar seemed to have a good relationship with Sean. I'd be curious to hear his response.

Thanks!

Posted by: robert.lane | November 30, 2007 2:52 PM

I can't imagine any sponsor wanting their name on such an item, it wouldn't be appropriate.

Posted by: Redcoat | November 30, 2007 2:52 PM

Guys, give Snyder a break here would you please? Name ONE mis-step he's taken in this whole thing? He's been exemplary through this. Give credit where credit is due.

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 30, 2007 2:53 PM

I wish I could go to the game on Sunday.

Posted by: jessie31202 | November 30, 2007 2:54 PM

jc,

I don't know if Sean's death has anything to with his past. But what I do know is Sean Taylor grew up in a place similar to the one I did. I don't play football or even make a six figure salary but people in my old neighborhood are jealous of me for some reason. Success will always breed jealousy.
I think he was definitley targeted by people who had grew up in the same place he did. Antrel Rolle said this also, they grew up in the same neighborhood.
Also, when you start to cut the negative individuals out of your life that will also incite envy and jealousy. They tend to have the attitude of: "What do you think? That you're better than me."

From the last post...

I know this is too soon to speculate...

You know what is sad? If these are the people that did it they won't be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I'm sure their lawyer will find some sort of loophole. If the ages of were 17, 19, and 26 then the lawyer will have the 17 and 19 year old accept a plea bargin, if the state makes one at all. The lawyer will incite that the 26 year old had "control" over them and they were forced to take part in the robbery/murder. Sort of like the case with the DC sniper.

I'm sure Sean Taylor had numerous friends, probably as many he had enemies. If these are the individuals responsible, they won't last long. The state won't have to worry about executing them.
Who ever murdered the people who murdered Taylor, will have to worry about retribution from the people who murdered Taylor. Even if the people who are expected of murdering Taylor actually didn't do it.

The last sentence is confusing, I know. But it explains THE problem with young black males.

A confusing and senseless cycle.

The Dan has behaved admirably during this tragedy. Lets give him the benefit of the doubt here.

Posted by: puttinforbird | November 30, 2007 2:55 PM

I think the only time Lavar has spoken was on Tuesday on the John Thompson show. I missed it but i'm sure he was on there.

Posted by: cfletcher__iii | November 30, 2007 2:55 PM

There are some idiots bashing the WP for their coverage of Sean's death:

We were appalled to see so much of the Nov. 28 Post devoted to the death of Sean Taylor. Granted, the death of any young man at the height of his career is tragic, but your coverage is emotionally over the top. This young man, who played professional football and obviously made a very great deal of money, is now mourned as if he were a tragic hero. How dare you give such lavish coverage to a football player at the expense of all those military heroes serving or who have died serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

LA has spoken to someone though I can't remember who. I think there is a link to it on one of JLC's posts.

Posted by: jessie31202 | November 30, 2007 2:57 PM

greg,

I know you feel. People shouldn't be ready to return the status quo just yet (making fun of Gibbs, Snyder, and talking football in general) but I honestly think some people are trying to deal with this in their own way. Of course you still have fools that will say whatever brainless thought that comes to mind, or lack thereof. I do agree with you though, Dan Snyder has shown nothing but class in this entire ordeal.

It's tough for everyone that is a fan of life, overall good people, and football.

Posted by: RedDMV | November 30, 2007 3:03 PM

I am going to be pissed off, if the Boston area coverage is not showing this game.

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 30, 2007 3:03 PM

click on the last CBS early in blue greg

http://www.the506.com/nflmaps/index.html

Posted by: Zebraskins | November 30, 2007 3:06 PM

Greg, that looks like a no. They are showing the indy game.

Although this was wrong last week, it still shows the skins in York County PA where I live. The tabel below the map shows changes... and I should have said the CBS link in blue.

Posted by: Zebraskins | November 30, 2007 3:08 PM

...Although this was wrong last week, it still shows the skins in York County PA where I live.......Which it wasnt being shown. They switched to the Giants game and the map never told me.

Sorry, I type too fast, this should have been in my last post.

Posted by: Zebraskins | November 30, 2007 3:09 PM

Red, agreed on Snyder. Not a single mis-step during the whole thing. He's really jumped up a bunch in my book.

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 30, 2007 3:09 PM

Thanks Zeb....my Friday now sucks...

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 30, 2007 3:12 PM

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm going to wipe the slate clean for Mr Snyder.

He is not perfect; he is human.

He is a life-long redskins fan and wants the team to win as much as anyone.

He has handled this tragedy with honor and has shown great compassion.

Posted by: Zebraskins | November 30, 2007 3:15 PM

Thanks, Zeebs! Thats a cool site...

Anyone catch Broohaa's post bashing Janso....

Just proves everyone's got an axe to grind at some point...

Glad they caught some suspects, just like we said about others, lets not jump to conclusions but see how it plays out...

Posted by: chrislarry | November 30, 2007 3:17 PM

Good post Stump, I've sort of felt that way for a while now.

Posted by: gregmarino88 | November 30, 2007 3:17 PM

Stumped right on the money. He gets major points for this one. I must also give credit to double G. I have bashed him but after watching him on Skins.com. He cares for his players and I respect that.

Posted by: jm220 | November 30, 2007 3:19 PM

Although it is tragic everytime someone in Iraq or Afghanistan spills blood in the sand, I think the reason it is covered or people tend to mourn on a larger level because when a celebrity (Especially athletes) dies they've connected with so many people, sometimes on different levels.
I don't think Sean Taylor should be painted as a hero. For me, there aren't any true heroes anymore. There are people I have admiration for and that is it. I think someday he may have had that distinction. But giving his acts in life, which were as recent as two years ago, makes me feel otherwise. But it still doesn't diminish the fact that he was a good person in my eyes. Anytime a man dedicates his life to change because he is trying to live righteous deserves a lot of respect to me. I think Sean Taylor was finally on the right path in life, but was once again detoured by those who wanted him to do deviate.

Sad.

my mom told me about that. i think it was in the letters to the editor section. although everyone is entitled to their opinion, that was a classless post. as with any coverage in the paper, on the tv news or the www, you have a choice to read/watch. classless of them to write in. regardless of whether you are a football fan or not, this murder was worthy of the around the clock coverage because it affected a lot of people and transcended football. i wonder if they wrote in when len bias died too. wouldn't surprise me. just have to shake my head at them and move on.

posted this on another but thought others might want to see just how much talent we had on the field... Sean played some rb in high school. check out the amazing #'s and he wore 26 in college which coincidentally is cp's # (was smoots) when sean was drafted which is why he initially wore 36.

found this about Sean here:

http://hurricanesports.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/taylor_sean00.html

Jason, It woud be interesting to see what Buck Ortega has to say since he seemed to know him well from reading this. Buck was on the Skins practice squad (i believe) and had some stellar preseason games with the Skins before being a late cut....

HIGH SCHOOL: Gulliver Prep... the No. 7 prospect in Dade County by the Miami Herald... rated the nation's No. 18 skill athlete by SuperPrep... a SuperPrep All-American... the No. 23 overall prospect in Florida, regardless of position, by SuperPrep... an Orlando Sentinel Super Southern Team selection... listed as the No. 1 athlete on the Florida Times-Union Super 75 list... the No. 14 player in Florida by the Gainesville Sun... accounted for three touchdowns (two receiving, one rushing) in the state title game victory over Marianna... a teammate of Gulliver Prep quarterback and fellow UM signee Buck Ortega... helped lead Gulliver to the Florida Class 2A State Championship in 2000... was a star on both sides of the ball in 2000, Taylor rushed for 1,300 yards and a state-record 44 touchdowns... played running back, defensive back and linebacker at Gulliver... rushed for more than 200 yards twice during Gulliver's state playoff run... racked up more than 100 tackles during the 2000 season... displayed excellent hands as a receiver... coached by Steve Howie at Gulliver Academy.

Posted by: gregskins | November 30, 2007 3:34 PM

Could we call someone a hero who died protecting his family from violent intruders? What would have happened if Sean Taylor wasn't in the house and his daughter and fiancee/girlfriend were alone? I know everyone likes to bring up the court case from two years ago, but maybe you should consider the actual circumstances of Taylor's death.

BTW, I think the Post, the Times, and other major news outlets have devoted a lot of time discussing the war in Iraq and I think plenty of people, including myself, are really upset about that too. No need to say the one has anything to do with the other.

Posted by: Ehren | November 30, 2007 3:35 PM

ChrisLarry,
Yes, I read Broohaha going off on Jason.

The irony is that Jason has been exemplary in this refusing to make any loaded statements.

If anyone wants to hear the initial loaded "journalism" simply go to ESPN.com go back to Monday's PTL and listen to Wilbon and the swagger and certainty with which he spoke
"I am not surprised" he said so confidently and not just once I might add.

I love PTL, but the only way Wilbon cannot be "surprised" was to be implying Sean Taylor's previous choices or present choice had something to do with the shooting.

Would he have been surprised if Tony K had been shot? Absolutely.
Case closed on Wilbon's comments.

Just dawned on me that it's a CBS game and I like the fact that James Brown is in control of the studio pre-game while all of the remembrance ceremonies are being held at FedEx. I know that a great Washingtonian like JB will keep the tone and coverage appropriate for the afternoon.

Posted by: kohastings | November 30, 2007 3:39 PM

KATHRYN TATKO- Probably upset her husband devotes Sundays to watching football. In other words she is sexually frustrated.

JACK RICHARDS- He was likely hung from the flagpole by the offensive linemen in high school. Never got invited to the cool parties, maybe was cut from the freshman squad and so on...

However, they're entitled to their opinions, but you know the old adage, and this one plain stinks.

We'll see.

Atleast you guys have a chance to see it live at a bar. Here at my place in California, it faces in a way were I can't even get a dish. All the bars near me don't open until 11:00, maybe 10:45 at the earliest. so unless cbs/fox shows the starts of the game to the entire country i won't see the start of it. unless any of my buddies gets the dish between now and sunday or i find a bar (near or far) that opens before 11.

The great - really great - tragedy in the death of Sean Taylor is that listening to his teammates, his family, his friends, talk about him, I get the sense that he was just starting to figure it out.

Figure out life (if we ever really figure that out), figure out football. Figure out what really counts.

Loved ones, family, friends. And figuring out his love - football.

No more games with the "posse" or acting cool or being a tough guy. Getting rid of all of that baggage and discovering what really counts.

I get the sense that, maybe, he was starting to find that out.

It's always a loss when young people die. But if we find out that they were just starting to build something, just starting to shed all of meaningless stuff in life, it's particularly tragic.

BREAKING NEWS OUT OF FORT MYERS:

I just wanted to let you know some new info. coming out of Fort Myers since I live here. Four people detained..a possible fifth is being searched for...and this local tv station NBC2 reported moments ago that one of the four suspects..maybe the alleged shooter...confessed to pulling the trigger but this very very preliminary info. They still have to confirm that with Miami-Dade investigators. Here's the link.
http://www.nbc-2.com/articles/readarticle.asp?articleid=16112&z=3&p

FYI the confession is not part of the story it was just mentioned in a live shot here at 5:30 p.m. Just letting everyone know.
