Gibbs' Contract Status (Updated)
A quick post to share what we know about the possibility of a contract extension for Coach Joe Gibbs.
Mike Wise reported today that "All indications are that the team owner, Daniel Snyder, never waffled regarding whether Gibbs should return. According to a team official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Snyder is ready to offer Gibbs a contract extension beyond his fifth and final year in 2008. I've heard two years, because that's the realistic feeling of how long a genuine Super Bowl run will take. But another team official said a duration has not been discussed."
ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that a two-year extension offer is on the table, however, our sources aren't saying that.
A Redskins spokesman just got back to us and said that, as of last night and his last contact with Gibbs, nothing had changed with regard to the coach being offered a contract. He called the ESPN report inaccurate and said he doubted the situation had changed in the last eight hours. He reiterated that Gibbs isn't open to considering it until the season is over.
And as recently as Friday night, sources on the coaching staff told us that Gibbs has discussed the roster beyond this year with coaches. He has talked about long-term plans for the team with coaches. They're all assuming he is returning and say that there is every indication of that, but that he has not explicitly said he's coming back.
They say it would be totally out of character during a playoff run for Gibbs to focus on something like that.
Here's the Wise link. Give a read. Let's get ready for some fubball!

Time to fire up the game centers. Go Bills and (gulp) Iggles!

Let's get ready for some fubball colon? Is the length of the ascender meant to convey "some, but not a lot, of excitement"?

Gibbs has proven himself after the Taylor tragedy and the Bills Debacle. Any other coach would have lost the team and packed it in for the year. Gibbs seems to be at his best when his back is against the wall and there is no room for error. Hopefully he has learned his lesson on game management issues and the Skins will finally become a dominant team. We could have easily won every single game this year, minus the Patriots Game!!! I think we have a solid foundation for next season. Also everything seems to indicate that it takes 3 years to really understand Al Saunder's offense. Next year should be exciting. Hopefully we will have further momentum from a play - off run.
P.S. If the Skins make the playoffs, I would be very scared of playing them! They have already proven that they can play the elite of the NFC at their stadium. They should have beaten both Green Bay and Dallas this season.

Actually, Daggar, that's a typo, although I have made a New Year's resolution to no longer use exclamation points.

14-0 Bills
I think this one may be over at the half
Adam
Posted by: argh | December 23, 2007 1:22 PM
Well, we started well, but the D got shredded on drive #1 and DMac fumbled deep in our territory to start their drive #2.
I see a ton of points being scored in this game, so a 14-7 deficit in the 1st quarter doesn't give me cause for concern (yet).
Guess we'll see
adam

So awesome to see the Giants struggling.
Now if we could only get the Iggles to man up and play some football.

14-7 Saints what happened there?

14-zip Bills. I rocked the Wallaby's dulce de leche the other day and found it most enjoyable. I have key lime for later today. I'll probably eat that around kickoff of the 4 p.m. games. I'm working from home until halftime of the first games.

Just teasing...go figure an ESPN report inaccurate? I'm SHOCKED to find there's crappy journalism going on in Bristol. SHOCKED!

Diddy, looks like the last team with the ball in our game is going to win
Defense may be optional, though I think we've got a better chance of getting a couple of stops than the Aints

Wow, you have to see the LBM play just a second ago. Threw the ball, but it fell out of his hand, flopped behind him, fumble, LBM recovers. The guy looks like a Looney Toons cartoon under center.

Reggie Brown TD. 21-14 Philly. All that matters is how we play tonight but things are looking nice this afternoon so far.

I don't much like that Oreo pizza thing. It would taste better cold. This Iggles-Aints game is just like the Cards game last week. Just trading scores. Hope it ends better

Why the heck didn't Moorman just go ahead and punt that ball. He had plenty of time.
He must still be rattled from Sean Taylor's hit.

Gints recover a fumble at the 25. My God, if you aren't watching that game, find it. The weather has just changed to a blizzard...in literally five minutes.

Conditions are supposedly great up on the mountain. I'm definitely going tomorrow (heading eeeeeearly to get to Mt. Baker). But I wanted to get some mileage in today...I still struggle with getting off the darn chair lift, so the more practice, the better.
Surprise! Crazy weather in Buffalo! 14-7 Giants.

That may be the wind speed. The cheerleaders just blew away
Adam
Posted by: argh | December 23, 2007 1:58 PM
That's too bad about the Buffalo weather. We all saw last week how unstoppable LBM is in harsh weather conditions. Oh, wait...
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 23, 2007 1:59 PM
They just had this massive rainstorm roll in with buckets of horizontal rain. It was perfect, and then it started pouring. Sadly, the cheerleaders ran into the locker room to get their rain gear. It would have been better if they had stayed out and, you know, took off their clothes and stuff.

Is the tie breaker for home field between Dallas/GB the head to head?
Posted by: lhege | December 23, 2007 2:11 PM
yep, in Dallas' favor. Packers should win out though which means we can kill the Boys home-field dreams and make the playoffs in one fell swoop next week
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 23, 2007 2:13 PM
Chicago looks to be making a game of it. Not exactly the storybook scenerio, but I'd prefer Dallas have home field locked up going into next week.
Posted by: lhege | December 23, 2007 2:18 PM
Of course as soon as I say that the other Adrian Peterson puts the Bears on top. Can the Vikes and Bears trade Petersons for a day?
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 23, 2007 2:20 PM
If DAL has it locked up, there's a 0% chance of TO playing. We all know what he did the first go-round
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 23, 2007 2:21 PM
Note to Andy Reid:
12 rushes - 128 yards
Please run more

Doesn't sound like TO is playing next week regardless of situation. High ankle sprain they are hoping he can be back for the playoff game after the bye. Their offense shut down last night after he went down. Makes it much easier to slow Witten and Barber.
Posted by: cdubb | December 23, 2007 2:25 PM
Here's the last Eagles sequence of plays
B Westbrook 8 yard run
DMac incomplete pass
B Westbrook 16 yard run

DMac incomplete pass
Andy Reid, run the ball you idiot!

don't you think that reid has to pass to see if he's got his 'QB of the future' for next year?

The NO-PHI game center just posted Brees pass to Brees for 8 yards. Huh?

Posted by: JS26121820 | December 23, 2007 2:46 PM
Dear Adam, The eagles are trash. They scored a few points on a team that can't defend anything. They only reason they are even able to do that is because the only defensive back with any ability is in the locker room. It's easy to run the ball when the other team is trash.
Posted by: sams3 | December 23, 2007 2:46 PM
The only thing seperating the teams is a trash TD that shouldn't have happend. The saints are down to an undrafted rookie a rb and they will still lose this game.

Meanwhile:
Raiders defensive tackle Warren Sapp was ejected from Sunday's game against the Jaguars after receiving three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
Sapp received all three of the penalties in a strange series of events that started when Jacksonville right tackle Tony Pashos was flagged for illegal use of hands to the face.
Officials said the Raiders declined the penalty, and the Jaguars lined up for a 43-yard field goal attempt with 21 seconds to play in the first half. Officials then said Oakland would accept the penalty, making it third-and-20 from the Raiders 35-yard line.
Jacksonville's offense went back on the field, but a few seconds later, the officials called the first unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Sapp. That gave the Jaguars an automatic first down, and Sapp started jawing at officials.
Sapp and defensive end Derrick Burgess were both flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during the arguments. Sapp kept talking, and he got a third one that also came with an ejection.
Teammates had to restrain Sapp, and an assistant coach escorted him off the field.
The penalties gave the Jaguars a first-and-goal at the 2, but David Garrard's pass at the goal line was intercepted by Kirk Morrison and returned 36 yards.

No they didn't cancel the Dallas game.
Dallas has nothing to play for at FedEx next week.
Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 23, 2007 04:30 PM
I assume you do not, but it would be foolhardy to now assume a win over Dallas considering their now home-field lock.
Afterall, the Bears destroyed GB out of the blue. This league is highly unpredictable.
Skins win today, they're one step closer.
That's it.
Posted by: gdennie | December 23, 2007 4:42 PM
LOL, Nantz just said "Miami made a play!" and it came out with a tone like "The band is out on the field!" That's funny

It's time to get fired up---gonna be a great game tonight!
Posted by: budgriff1 | December 23, 2007 4:46 PM
Sainst lost...SOOO that means we win the next 2 we are in...So we control our own birth
Posted by: leevi98 | December 23, 2007 4:48 PM
adam,
don't you think that reid has to pass to see if he's got his 'QB of the future' for next year?
Posted by: daggar | December 23, 2007 02:34 PM
If it were Kevin Kolb in there, this might make sense, but it's Donovan McNabb who is throwing the passes. Andy Reid has seen Donovan play for how many years? I think he can figure out if he wants to keep DMac or not without a pointless audition.
No ides why you would do anything except run the football until the opposition's d shows that they can stop you from gaining 8-10(or more) yards per handoff.
Dear Adam, The eagles are trash. They scored a few points on a team that can't defend anything. They only reason they are even able to do that is because the only defensive back with any ability is in the locker room. It's easy to run the ball when the other team is trash.
Posted by: sams3 | December 23, 2007 02:46 PM
- I know the NO defense stinks, that's why I guaranteed an Eagles victory before the game.
- My team can't be so bad. It beat your team in FedEx last time we played head to head.
Adam

Stop the run, force Jackson to throw and Skins should be in decent shape.
Posted by: budgriff1 | December 23, 2007 4:50 PM
You forgot, don't be afraid to throw it your self.
Posted by: alex35332 | December 23, 2007 4:55 PM
sams3, are you trying to jinx us by dissing another team??? Not to take up for the Eagles but they almost beat the Pats (we did not come close) and the Cowboys. It will be an absolute miracle for us to make the playoffs.
Posted by: Lisa_R | December 23, 2007 4:57 PM
Move to strike all comments speaking to a Redskins berth from the record. WAY, WAY too early to call that putt.
And no, there is no backing in. They have to win both games. If the Vikings win tonight, they're in. If they lose tonight, and win next week, with a Skins loss to Dallas, they're in.
Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 23, 2007 4:58 PM
I take that back...if they beat the Vikes and then lose next week, but both the Vikes and Saints lose, they're in. Thank Todd for the CALCULATOR.
Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 23, 2007 5:01 PM
I'm hope it doesn't come down to this, but mathematically it is possible to lose to Dallas and still make it as long as we win tonight
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 23, 2007 5:02 PM
I saw on Fox today that the Skins game has been changed next week to 4PM. Is this true?
That would suck--i hate going to 4 o'clock games
Posted by: budgriff1 | December 23, 2007 5:05 PM
Correct me if I am wrong but last time we ended the season with Dallas at home was the year Green retired, and we won that right?
Posted by: alex35332 | December 23, 2007 5:08 PM
I don't assume anything.
I said a win tonight - IF they win tonight -and they're as good as in.
And I think they are.
If you want to worry and bite your nails over a Cowboys team that has nothing to play for next week and no reason to play its starters, go ahead.

Sorry bud can't feel bad for you having to go to a 4 game when I've only been able to go to one my whole lifetime. Have fun though

Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 23, 2007 5:15 PM
I wish I could afford Skins tickets
Posted by: alex35332 | December 23, 2007 5:16 PM
Next Sunday's game is still at 1 p.m.
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 5:18 PM
The Redskins now control their destiny and if they win tonight DC will go crazy for next week's game against the Cowboys. So let's go Skins!
I hope Joe Gibbs gets an extension and stays. But that's the last thing he is thinking about now and it's just a distraction at this point. It looks to me that what they need is better strategic personnel management and conditioning.
Maybe they are getting better at the former and will curtail throwing away draft choices and salary cap. As far as conditioning, football is a very tough sport but with some better conditioning (think Pilates type stuff) they could probably avoid some of these hamstring and other muscle pulls and strains.
Anyone who followed the Skins during Joe Gibbs 1 era knows what an unbelievable coach he is. Joe, please stay!

And happy holidays to TJ Duckett

So who will be the new Ravens Head Coach? I assume they are changing the guard.
Posted by: alex35332 | December 23, 2007 5:30 PM
We're not hearing that Billick will be fired; Bisciotti just extended him last year. He might be giving up playcalling, tho...
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 5:41 PM
It's not the plays, it's the actors. Billick needs to go. I don't know a single Ravens fan who wants that guy back. How do you not have a QB for ten straight years?
Posted by: SMACK1 | December 23, 2007 6:03 PM
Everything is going according to plan!
If SF wins, Seattle has the edge on the #3 seed.
NO lust, putting the 'Skins in charge of their own destiny.
TO is out, Dallas has clinched. They'll pull their starters in the second half next week.
'Skins at Seattle for the first round of the playoffs.
This nightmare season could have a happy ending after all.
Win and you're in. Let's go 'Skins! I'm nervous and totally amped up for tonight's game.
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:08 PM
Just popping in to say that I prolly won't be popping in much for the next few days, as we've set up camp here at my in-laws' across town until Wednesday. I'll get on when I can.
Looks like our destiny is now in our own hands, thanks to Philly.
I received special dispensation from my wife to go watch the game over at my new gentleman friend's house again tonight, so I'll be together in agreement with another die-hard Skins fan. That can only be good.
TheCindy, I'm confuzzled now about our game time for next week. I saw the numerous Fox promos earlier saying that our game is at 4PM next week, and I have to wonder how Fox would make such a boneheaded error, if indeed it is one. But like you, NFL.com still says 1PM for next Sunday.
If for some reason I'm not able to get back on RI before Tuesday, a hearty Merry Christmas to all to whom it applies, and also Happy Hanukkah to all to whom that applies. :)

just curious to take a sample among the bloggers online today...
who do you hate most?
cowboys?
eagles?
giants?
Posted by: RedskinWillie | December 23, 2007 6:09 PM
We're doomed :( Sportsnet just reported that Lavar will be on their pregame show. I love Lavar but EVERY time he has been a part of the Sportsnet show this season we have lost :(
Posted by: Lisa_R | December 23, 2007 6:10 PM
Damn you LaVar!
At least there's no damn Pam Oliver on the sidelines.
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:16 PM
I'm asking our peeps on the ground in Minny to confirm game time.
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 6:20 PM
Freakzilla, are you nervous about what to wear?
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 6:22 PM
Thanks Cindy! Fox advertised it as a 4:00 start time about 30 minutes ago - which would be great for me...but I understand 4:00 PM games must be a hassle for those that go to FedEx
Posted by: johndinhouston | December 23, 2007 6:23 PM
Also, can't you and your gentleman friend blog together?
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 6:24 PM
Willie:
Cowpies are by far the most hated team in my book. No doubt about it.
Posted by: puttinforbird | December 23, 2007 6:27 PM
freakzilla, don't wear too much cologne!
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:28 PM
Jasno is on his way to the dome; he's in a cab in the midst of what he calls a blizzard right now. Ordinarily, I'd be skeptical, but he went to school in Syracuse. He should know from snow.
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 6:30 PM
too bad they don't play outside. love me them snow games!
Posted by: puttinforbird | December 23, 2007 6:31 PM
Cindy, if the 'Skins make the playoffs, are you going to make the trip out to Seattle? I have the perfect restaurant and bar scoped out to host the WashPo crew.
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:31 PM
Good point, Diddy. Freak should wear just enough to hint "come hither."
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 6:32 PM
Oooooh, I don't think I'd do the first-round game, sadly.
Posted by: TheCindy | December 23, 2007 6:33 PM
You're going to miss out on the most fabulous wine I've had in years: the Brian Carter Tuttarossa. DEEEElicious.
Is anyone else as nervous as me?
It's great to play meaningful games in December!
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:35 PM
Interesting...Jerramy Stevens ended up in Tampa Bay. I thought he'd be out of the League for good now. Of course, he just committed a false start...
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:37 PM
It's awesome to see ol' Emmitt Thomas on the sidelines in Atlanta. Remember St. Joe's old post-game saw..."Richie, Torgy, Pec, and Emmitt..."
Ah, memories.
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:41 PM
Awesome INT and return for Nate Clements...Tampa Bay looks like the #4 seed...
Posted by: PDiddy | December 23, 2007 6:42 PM
Beyond comprehension how the Giants are 10-5. Eli is at best a backup quarterback. Eli's had enough time: he's a career 70 QB rating, and will always be a career 70 QB rating, and that's not going to get it done against TB or Seattle. Both defenses won't worry about Eli, and will shut down the running game. One and done, and it will be ugly. Coughlin and Eli must be turned over. By comparions, the Skins are far more settled and more spirited that the Giants: very pleased that Gibbs may not walk away from this just yet.
Posted by: jrizzo | December 23, 2007 6:53 PM
And don't tell me about Gibbs/coaching staff time management issues after watching this( I think this was in the 3rd quarter): Giants have the ball, play clock is running down, Eli calls a time-out (first one). OK. Play back in, and ELI CALLS ANOTHER TIME OUT!!! WHAT??? What is this: college basketball? Next play, proceeds to fumble and turns it over. And they're 10-5.
Posted by: jrizzo | December 23, 2007 6:58 PM
The 49ers Shaun Hill (Terp) looks very good again this week.
He's thrown 3 TDs so far today.
Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 23, 2007 6:59 PM
I can't take waiting for the night game. Could these games on today be any more boring!! Go Skins!
Posted by: puttinforbird | December 23, 2007 7:03 PM
Adam -- I just thought it was funny to think of Reid needing to see anything of McNabb, particularly since the odds of either of them being back are -- well, a lot more in question than you'd reasonably expect.
And I turned on NBC to setup the Tivo for tonight, but had to turn it away before I saw too much of Buffaloes on Ice.
Posted by: daggar | December 23, 2007 7:04 PM
It's Gibbs, hall of fame football coach, winner everywhere he has gone (that redneck racing thing too as I'm told). We'd be a fool to let him go (never mind push him away). When, before Gibbs came back there were rumors that Cowher might be available I was hoping for that. As it is, I'm disappointed just the same as the rest of you that the team hasn't gone farther. But they fight and fight and fight. Had they quit I'd think differently but I believe they will gel and be scary.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. Can he get it done or is he just being stubborn. More years of game mismanagement will just be wasted, but the players will run through walls for him
