Jason Campbell Update
Howdy and a happy day to all of you! Paul Tenorio is at Redskins Park and just saw the "other" QB...
Jason Campbell was one of very few Redskins that came in for treatment today; he took time to talk about his recovery, the team's recent success and the timetable for his return.
On how he's doing in recovery process:
"I'm doing pretty good, you know, walking and all, but we have yet to do anything on the field and to try to do any kind of running, so it's still hard to say. The hardest part is sitting back watching all this. We're having a lot of fun right now as a team, we're winning, and you feel like you're an outsider looking in, watching. But I'm just proud for our team. We've been through so much this year and for us to be 8-7 with a chance to go to the playoffs is a huge deal."
On steps going forward this week:
"This week probably first thing we'll try to start running on the treadmill. Try to do some different other things, different movements. The one thing you want to do before you do any of that is get the swelling out and once you accomplish that, then you try to move on to the next step. It's still a work in progress."
On Santana and Clinton back healthy and offense finding success:
"That's the key. We've got everybody back healthy, all our key players are healthy, Santana, Randle El and Clinton are back healthy. And then, at the same time, we're running the ball good now, so we're able to keep people off-balance because we're moving the ball in two different phases. And when you can run the ball successfully, play action really opens it up. So it's doing an outstanding job of that. And our defense is getting turnovers, we're not turning it over ... "
To fight through to this point:
"To be in the spot we're in is a blessing. To be 8-7 right now with all the things we've been through this season, during that stretch during the...Buffalo game and the Chicago game, it was a hard week because of what happened to Sean. And I think guys, we're finally getting back to normal and you can tell we're really dedicating it and playing hard. But during that time it was a really hard span."
On if he's still looking to return for the playoffs (if they make it):
"The only thing I've got to do is just take it day-to-day and just see what happens, see how we can improve it and right now we're winning so that's the key."

Just take care of that knee JC and ride the Toddmobile baby!!! This is still your team (I think)

BTW, whoever thinks Childress is like Ned Flanders doesn't watch the Simpsons. Flanders may be ugly but he's not stupid. I'm thinking more along the lines of the father of one Milhouse Van Houten (first name anyone?)

Good news from JC! I still think we shouldn't be messing with the mojo and playing in the playoffs (should we make it), but that's amazing to be that far after popping a kneecap.

I watch the Simpsons faithfully and Childress is a balled headed Flanders.

That should read "we shouldn't be messing with the mojo and playing JC over TC in the playoffs"

RI'ers in the colorado area (COskins, milehigh, others?)
I'm thinking the dallas game deserves picking a friendly neighborhood bar (kid-friendly hopefully) for a solid root-your-guts-out effort
I'm in golden and can offer up at least one sugggestion with a cozy bar area and 1 large HD TV

If we make the playoffs, it'll be on four Todd Collins wins, following four straight JC losses.
Maybe JC is the better QB. I think he is. But I think you seriously screw with your team's confidence and chemistry if you pull Todd out and bring in Soup. Better to let it ride.
Posted by: jvwright | December 24, 2007 12:13 PM
If, by a some sort of chance, we beat dallas and go to the playoffs. I'm gonna lose all faith if campbell is healthy and they start him. He is the quarterback of the future... but the reason we've won the last 3 are in large part due to The TODD!
Posted by: pcreeldeal2 | December 24, 2007 12:13 PM
I hate to say it, but if JC is ready for Seattle (fingers crossed), there is NO WAY he can step in and take over for Todd at this point. Todd led the team here and it's his show. JC will come back and get them next year, as long as there is no shady QB controversy like Brunell/Ramseygate '05.
Posted by: RickyBobby | December 24, 2007 12:13 PM
I agree with jvwright on that one. Pains me to say it because, clearly, JC is the QB of the future. But you can't argue with results. Granted, TC has the benefit of a healthy Portis and Moss, but still...
Ellipsis. Punctuation Mark of the Day...
If (if, if, if, if) the 'Skins make the playoffs 2 out of 4 years in the St. Joe Part Deux reign, I think that has to be pretty convincing, don't you. Particularly given the sheer insanity of this season.

Cindy, do you know who got the game ball?
Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 24, 2007 12:15 PM
Speaking of QB's, did I see Sam Hollenbach holding a clipboard last night? The same one who never met a defender he didn't like to throw to at UM? When did we sign him? I need to pay more attention

P.S. I'm looking for a parking permit to the game on Sunday. Hit me up if anyone has an extra. Thanks.

Milhouse's Dad is Kirk Van Houten:

they signed him after Campbell went down in week 14.

Thanks Diddy, that was bugging me

Sam has been the third QB ever since just prior to the Giants game, I believe. Suffice to say, if Hollenbach plays, this team is screwed.
I still say that Brunell will have something to contribute to this run before it's all over...

diddy, thx for the gramatical clarification, however, I don't believe there is a band called elipsis . . .

Woo hoo! Merry Christmas everyone! (from up here in snowy NH!)
Watched the game with the family and got all the nieces and nephews permission to stay up late - just in time to have us all yell "COOOOOOOOOOOOLEY!!!" The three year old was driving her father crazy by singing HTTR all day long waiting for the game!
SO EXCITED for Sunday!!! My VERY FIRST Skins/Cowboys game!

hmm, todd collins seems like a more grown up version of the QB on Friday Night Lights.
anyone else see that?
Posted by: spotter | December 24, 2007 12:27 PM
and would that make cooley riggins, and portis smash?
Posted by: spotter | December 24, 2007 12:32 PM
For sure! Cooley = Riggins, Portis = Smash!
Now, where's Lyla?
Posted by: PDiddy | December 24, 2007 12:34 PM
Kelli Johnson? Dunno can't think of anything else
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 12:38 PM
Sellers would be Riggins
Posted by: MadDog | December 24, 2007 12:38 PM
sort of wondering if Buddy is Snyder :)
but coach taylor's return is somewhat gibbsian, and this season is very gibbs v2.0'ish (though perhaps we've hit the upgrade point, and we now have Gibbs v2.1, where the bugs have been somewhat ironed out)
Posted by: spotter | December 24, 2007 12:39 PM
MadDog: I was thinking more of atitude. You can see cooley in HS going to mexico, pondering if I could see Sellers (As sellers is now, not old bad boy sellers).
Posted by: spotter | December 24, 2007 12:40 PM
dude, Gibbs will not take out Collins if Campbell comes back. Lets not forget how much Gibbs LOOOVES veteran guys, and Collins is his type of man. The way St. Joe has gushed about Todd the past few games shows how much more confidence he has in the veteran. If there is anything you guys should be worried about it is the possibility of a QB controversy in 2008.

Hey kids, just got a report for NORAD that Santa's sleigh was spotted on radar over our military bases in Iraq! Yes, cousin Eddie, I'm serious about that
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 12:47 PM
So there seems to be near unanimity for riding the Todd until he can't get it done anymore. Is there the same unanimity for giving Joe Gibbs a 2 (or 3) year contract extension at the end of the season?
Adam
Posted by: argh | December 24, 2007 1:01 PM
you can pretty much count on Gibbs keeping Toddball goin' on until either this season is over or Todd gets hurt (not wishing this at all).
Soups knee won't allow him to be ready to go unless it's an emergency. . .
I'm pretty sure that storyline is already solidified and will not change, so don't fret this year, next year could be interesting though . . .
Posted by: skinsfan8KaboveMSL | December 24, 2007 1:02 PM
Gosh, I have to think if JC is healthy (or healthy enough to play) that JG has to start him.
What will it do to his psyche if he's healthy and the coach sticks with Collins? Collins will be out of football in 2 years; JC will be here for another decade.
It's a tough call.
Maybe start JC and if he's not "moving well", bring in Collins.
First, we have to beat the 'boys.
Posted by: SteveMG | December 24, 2007 1:10 PM
Gotta stick with Collins in any playoff games regardless of Soup's psyche. You can afford to massage a guy's ego a bit in the regular season but there's no room for that in the playoffs. You gotta dance with the one that brung ya, and if the Skins make the playoffs it'll be via 4 straight W's from Collins.
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 1:17 PM
Love JC, but totally agree. Todd's the bus driver.
It's a moot point, anyway. Unless the 'Skins improbably make the Super Bowl, JC won't be healthy enough to play.
Now THAT would be an interesting decision for St. Joe.
But first...Beat Dallas.
Posted by: PDiddy | December 24, 2007 1:19 PM
Because of Toddball, I got a little feeling that next year Brunell is gone.
Whata ya guys think?
Posted by: cmecyclist | December 24, 2007 1:23 PM
I think it's been a fait accompli that this is Brunell's final season. He has handled his situation with grace and dignity.

MEMO TO FANS WHO TRASHED THIS TEAM AND CALLED FOR JOE GIBBS TO RETIRE: Please do not show up on Sunday at Fed Ex stadium for the redskins-cowboys game. If you must come to the stadium, it should only be to turn in your Redskins replica jerseys. The team does not need you. The real fans do not want you there.
If you think it's okay to jump back on the bandwagon now that the team is on the verge of the playoffs, you are sorely mistaken.
It's not okay to trash the team and their hall of fame head coach when they are losing and then jump back on board after they start winning.
You are the worst kind of fans.
Posted by: Barno1 | December 24, 2007 1:28 PM
Maybe Mark's last in DC, but not his career unless he wants to be done. Look around the league. Someone will take a flier on him. Testaverde got a start this year! Atlanta, Chicago, Baltimore, Carolina, Miami, N.Y. Jets and maybe Minnesota after what I saw last night all have no quarterbacks to speak of. I'm sure there's other teams, but that's just off the top of my head.
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 1:30 PM
Say, is 26121820 just a random # or does it mean anything?
Posted by: cmecyclist | December 24, 2007 1:35 PM
Gibbs will ride Wolverine Todd (a shout out to my fellow Alum) until the offense stagnates. Remember his fondness for experience, and TC's brought that in buckets.
JC should be learning from TC, and come back next year with the similar command and quick decisions TC has shown. When JC develops this skill combined with his deep-ball skills I still feel the 'Skins have a better franchise qb than the cowgirls.
When Russ Grimm comes in as coach in 2010 he'll be smart to retain an Al Saunders protege as O-coordinator for the continuity. The young kids on offense and defense (are you listening, Danny boy) must be locked in for the next 3-5 years, because this team can contend for the Bowl if the 'Skins lock in on this philosophy and approach.

I took those numbers years ago as my favorite NASCAR drivers at the time (R. Wallace, Martin, Mayfield, Labonte, Stewart) and they just stuck till now they're imprinted on my brain. I suppose if I were a powerball player, those would be my numbers. I'm sure I'm the butt of a Foxworthy joke in there somewhere...
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 1:40 PM
pd, you're right IF (big if) we build through the draft and stockpile picks. One thing that scares me to death if we make a playoff run is Danny getting the mentality that we're just a step away from elite and blowing draft picks for FA's/trades to make "the next step".
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 1:44 PM
See 2000 (Smith, Sanders, George) and 2006 (Arch, Lloyd, Duckett) for examples from the other two playoff runs under Danny
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 1:45 PM
Reminds me of Tony Kornheiser's "Bandwagon" series, with all the fake numbers thrown in.
Barno, chill. Yeesh. This isn't exactly the most important thing in people's lives. Fans have the right to be impetuous and twist with the wind. This team, despite the injury problems. has underachieved for the bulk of the year, don't forget that. Also don't forget that as much as we all love St. Joe, his mistake against Buffalo is plainly obvious and particularly egregious.
In any event, I hope Santa gets you your DVD.

Stealing away from the fam-in-law in the mid-morning, post-breakfast lull to say:
WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
How 'bout them Redskins?! :)
Man, I'm proud of what these guys have accomplished in the last three weeks. They were handed every reason to just mail in the rest of the season, but instead they've just been getting better every week.
My favorite play last night was on the third down that we converted prior to our final TD. All week, all I heard was that we had no chance of running between the tackles, and we did just that on a crucial play and got the first down.
Also, I loved CP's touchdown pass, and actually predicted that play earlier last week while talking with my dad. I figured that with the Vikes' run pursuit, coupled with their young secondary, that they were a perfect defense against which to run that play.
One more thing before I get back to the fam, and that's that I love Jason and think he'll be our QB for a long time, but I don't think he should see the field in the postseason should we be there, unless something happens to Todd. Todd has shown the ability to pick apart each of the three teams he's faced. Don't mess with a good thing. And I, too, think Mark Brunell is done for us after this year, and I'm with Diddy as to the man's classiness. Mark's a good guy and will always get my respect.
Okay, I'll try to get back on later. I'm looking forward to going back and reading some of what I've missed. You peeps have been busy. :)
(Hey, Diddy, how are those nerves today?)
Merry Christmas!

Well said, couldn't have put it better myself. Only addition I'd make is that when the fake fans turn in their jerseys, it is to Mike Sellers....LOL

Have to keep Collins as starter. Though Santana was dropping even better passes from Campbell earlier in the year. Campbell, if he gets healthy, is backup only for 2007.
I do see Sunday's game as a trap game. The 'Boys are pretty deep and Brad Johnson is a dangerous backup ... a vet who knows how to win. A lot like Collins. Would be helpful if they rest Demarcus Ware and Terrence Newman ...
Posted by: zcezcest1 | December 24, 2007 2:04 PM
oh yeah, and give the coaches credit -- 12 men on the field was THE BEST CHALLENGE OR THE YEAR!!!!! By any team, any time. Nice to see Gibbs look comfortable doing it.

People who keep referencing the Buffalo game and Gibbs' timeout gaffe forget: A) the guy already made the kick from 50+ and B) Jason Campbell's back-to-back turnovers (a fumble and an INT) let the Bills into that game, not Joe.
I'm a big JC fan, and I don't think this team has underachieved at all. Salvaging a 9-7 record for a team with a QB starting his first full season isn't bad.
I believe if JC had not been injured, we'd be looking at 6-10 or 7-9.
I just hope he (JC) studies as much as Collins has all these years and is prepared to run Saunder's offense NEXT SEASON the way it is meant to be run: Quick reads/decisions and timing.
Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 24, 2007 2:21 PM
Happy Christmas from London!
Gotta stay with Todd. No Q JC is the future, but TC is in the zone and the team is in the zone with him. Also this is 'no second chances' country, and given that Jason is still learning how to close out the crunch-games flawlessly, you have to go with the man making no (or v few) mistakes.
Got to be happy that pretty much all the receiving corps plus CP & Betts r all firing. With the injuries and 'everything' I figure how far we go is how far we go this season. But - with the 12th man, with the 21st man, bring on the Boys! Bring on the Hawks! Bring on them all!
God bless you lovely Nation...(ellipses rule!)
Posted by: mikeysuperdons | December 24, 2007 2:22 PM
Barno, where is it written that to be fan of a team you must proclaim that it craps rose blossoms? How can you blindly profess the greatness of a team and refuse to give any kind of a critical eye? I am proud to be a Redskin fan and would not trade it for the world. That does NOT mean that I would relinquish my right to question or critique the front office/coaches/players. I never questioned Joe's ability to rally a team or keep the guys playing hard. That's his strength. Game management remains his weakness although it was outstanding last night. I will not be turning in my jersey/paraphernalia to Mike Sellers or anybody for saying that. Loving the team don't mean you have to drink all the kool-aid!
Posted by: JS26121820 | December 24, 2007 2:25 PM
I don't think Barno was referring to fans with a critical eye. We all (should) have that.
I think he meant the people who called for Gibbs to be fired immediately after certain losses, people who made Depends diapers jokes about Gibbs, called him senile, said his bust should be removed from Canton, etc, etc, et al.
Fortunately, there were only a few of those people. I hope they've found a new bandwagon to ride. Maybe up in New England.
Posted by: MrRedskin21 | December 24, 2007 2:31 PM
What I see is that Gibbs has really allowed this team to come together after Sean's death. That has allowed the players to really come together and perform tighter and better.
Having said that, he still went super-conservative in the second half which allowed Minnie to come back. That's still the same old "problem" that he had earlier in the season.
Posted by: cmecyclist | December 24, 2007 2:35 PM
If Jason tries to comeback in the playoffs, dislocate his other knee!!!
Posted by: Soups1 | December 24, 2007 3:15 PM
Agree tho that we went ultra conservative as the game went on. The Vikes got some proper momentum going in the 2nd half, and I don't think the team has enough healthy talent to do that if/when we get into the playoffs. Who knows what the "Boys" will be like with resting players, but the Hawks in Qwest Field is not going to be a laugh - we'll need to be like the first half vs Minnesota for 4 full quarters
Posted by: mikeysuperdons | December 24, 2007 5:13 PM
Does anyone really want JC back for the playoffs? If they get in I OD NOT WANT JC TO START...They would just turnthe ball over and lose...The reason for this teams recent success is indeed Todd Collins...I do not want JC back in this year
Posted by: leevi98 | December 24, 2007 7:00 PM
