Jim Mora, This One's For You (Yeah, We're Talkin' About The Playoffs)
Huge game tonight. To most of the country, this is another disaster on Monday night. But for Redskins Nation, it is a vital match-up of good vs. evil. Even the most PETA-friendly Redskin fan has to be a Falcon supporter tonight. It's your obligation to watch (is some of this a ploy to get my man Kornheiser better ratings? sure. I love the dude. Totally in the tank for him. But hear me out).
You see, if the Falcons pull the upset (I guess this is still considered an upset in the patently-putrid NFC), then the Redskins are assured at least the second Wildcard spot should Washington finish 9-7. Yep, Saints lose tonight and the Redskins run the table and they will be in the playoffs.
And, a Saints loss tonight also means the Redskins would need a lot less help to get in at 8-8 (a very real possibility still after another weekend of NFC follies). Despite a four-game losing streak and the Sean Taylor tragedy and the scheduling quirks, the Redskins remain a postseason threat even should they limp in with a .500 record.
Okay, so here's what we know (and were are calling Dallas, Green Bay, Tampa and Seattle division champs for the purposes of this blog, and conceding a wildcard spot to the Giants as well, to keep this from getting even more ridiculously complicated than it already is)
At 9-7 the Redskins would hold tiebreakers (through head-to-head wins - Minn, Det, Ariz) over all other possible opposition for the final wildcard spot. Except New Orleans, the only team of the bunch they do not play directly.
A 9-7 Skins team would have a 7-5 NFC record (currently 4-5 with 3 NFC games left), while a 9-7 New Orleans team would be 8-4 vs. the NFC, so the Saints would get in (Saints are 4-4 vs. NFC with 4 NFC games left including tonight).
Now, should the Saints lose tonight, and also happen to drop one of their final 3 games (vs. Arizona, vs. Philly and at Chicago), then the chances of the Redskins getting in at 8-8 get much better (assuming one of Washington's final two wins is over Minnesota - lose that game, obviously, and the season's probably over).
(New Orleans hosts Arizona next week, and, as best I can tell, root your guts out for a tie in that one. )
So let's say the Skins win Sunday night at New York and beat the Vikings. They could still lose to Dallas in Week 17 and get in at 8-8 assuming the following:
The Carolina Panthers do not run the table (Carolina is the only 5-8 team that could hold a tiebreaker over the Skins at 8-8. At 8-8 Carolina would have an 8-4 NFC record. Of course, to get to 8-8 the sinking Panthers would have to beat 3 straight division winners - Seattle, Dallas and Tampa Bay behind the eternal Vinny T at QB)
The Saints lose 2 of their final 4 games and finish 7-9 or worse
The Vikings lose at Denver in Week 17
The Lions lose one of their final 3 games (at San Diego, vs. KC, at Green Bay)
The Cardinals lose one of their final 3 games (at New Orleans, vs. Atlanta, vs. St. Louis). The Cards could do the Skins a favor and beat the Saints, and, then manage to choke to a weak team in one of the final two weeks, and the Skins can be in good position at 8-8)
So, how realistic is this? Who the hell knows in this conference? But personally, if the Skins win their next 2 games - and I by no means think that's close to a given - then they get a Dallas team with nothing to play for at home in Week 17.
I think overall the Saints game tonight is beyond huge. If they get past Atlanta I think they could be a danger to get to at least 8 wins, which means Skins have to run the table to get in. But with Bush and McAllister hurt, the Saints could blow it tonight and end up tanking completely down the stretch. Also, a Saints loss tonight and they could beat Arizona next week and still face a tougher sked down the stretch than the Cards, which would help the Skins' 8-8 chances.
Minnesota is the only team of this wildcard bunch to be playing truly good football right now, reeling off 5 straight wins, but I don't think they are good enough to close with 8 straight wins, either. They do however, have an identity, which is more than 85 percent of the NFC can say. They run it down your throat and don't let you run it and they kid QB there, Jackson, has been infinitely better in the second half of the season and lo longer a turnover machine). The Vikings will be favorite to beat the Bears Sunday, but if they lost would anyone be truly stunned?)
And, again, as I said before, a Saints loss tonight and the situation is crystal clear for Washington: Run the table and get in.
Okay, my brain hurts.
So, how exactly can a team lose 4 in a row and not have a 3-game winning streak since 2005 and still be in the thick of the playoffs? Well, let's see:
The Lions lose 5 straight
The Cards find a way to give up 37 points at home to the 49ers - that's 6 weeks worth of scoring for San Fran - and lose 3 of 5 overall
Carolina loses 4 of 5
The Saints lose 3 of 4 after a 4-game winning streak, losing at home to a previously winless St. Louis outfit. (Had they not called a ridiculous bone headed double-reverse in their own territory against Tampa last week and blown a late lead, then New Orleans would be 6-6 right now and 5-3 against the NFC, and the Skins would be in deep trouble).
The Eagles lose 3 in a row (they had New England on the ropes two weeks back, blew a game to Seattle amid a flurry of turnovers, and had a game-tying field goal hit the upright Sunday).
The Bears lose 3 of 4, most importantly to the Redskins Thursday night.
And, just like that, your Washington Redskins are in the hunt. Enjoy!

cL, I need 24 points from Brees tonight to close the RI league out with 5 straight wins and NOT make the playoffs!
I need all those points because one of Kost's mates had the Clots D against B'more last night. Ugh.

One of the media's hobby horses this year has been how much better the AFC is than the NFC. They've played 54 interconference games through 14 weeks. The NFC has won 27 and the AFC has won 27. Sounds pretty even, so far.
Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 10, 2007 10:45 AM
OK my head is spinning from reading that post. lol

(Apologies...this is from the last thread.)
First, about the guest post: I agree with Tandler on most of his points. When Spurrier left the Redskins, he left NOTHING worth mentioning in his wake. Any good players Spurrier left behind were acquired before he arrived, with the notable exceptions of Randy Thomas and Laveranues Coles. The player evaluation was poor, the team was run horribly, the starting QB was a shattered shell of the player he was when he was drafted due to poor schemes, there were no RBs or WRs of note besides Coles.
Gibbs as a coach has been below average. Gibbs as a GM has been slightly above average.
I think people often make the mistake of comparing Gibbs to the best GMs in the league, primarily because the good ones are the ones they know. Gibbs went out and got a legit starting RB, a decent #1 WR (who probably would ideally be a #2 -- but let's face it, #1 WRs don't grow on trees). He got a whole bunch of starting-quality defensive talent, already mentioned in other comments. He went out and got a potential franchise QB.
Yes, he has had misses in free agency - but I defy anyone to show me a team that hasn't. The problem was that the 3 biggest mistakes happened last year, and people have very short memories. Archuleta, Duckett and Lloyd are the big ones. Who else was a total bomb of an acquisition? Instead of taking Carlos Rogers in the first round, I suppose the team could have taken Antrell Rolle...or Pacman Jones. Gulp.
The biggest mistake Gibbs made was taking a good offensive line for granted. He didn't do enough in his time so far to shore up the line, and he is paying the price this year as all those 30-somethings are getting hurt all the time.
There is no doubt the Redskins have underachieved on gameday, and you have to point at the coaching for that. But in terms of raw talent, there aren't too many NFL rosters I would trade the Redskins' roster for -- particularly in the watered-down NFC. There are teams that might make the playoffs ahead of the Redskins that certainly aren't as talented from top to bottom, but are better-coached (read: Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Posted by: jcabana | December 10, 2007 10:50 AM
Seems to me that the Jints might -- might -- relax a little bit this Sunday, since they are coming off a tough win over the Iggles, they have no shot at the division crown, they only need one win to clinch the playoffs, and they are two games ahead of Minny (who does hold a tiebreaker with a win over NYG) and three games ahead of us and everybody else vying for that sixth spot. Their playoff position can't get better, and they have a cushion.
Regardless, we have to show up. The D has to be strong to the finish. The O has to be efficient, convert third downs, and score some more of those "touchdown" things which were introduced last Thursday. (I can't wait to see what Colonel Saunders has cooked up for his boy Todd!) The special teams just gotta keep being special.
We can do this.
HAIL!

Can't decide if I should reach for the Advil or the Midol.
All of this goes to show you just how much pressure parity has placed on these coaches and players. One play, one poor decision, one instance of bad game management, or one turnover can cost your team everything. Every play counts...

I'm pretty sure it's going to take a miracle for the Skins to make it.

I love this. Love it, I say! If so-and-so wins or loses, then such-and-such happens, and so on. It's brain excercise, and I don't have the time or patience for sudoku, so I'll take it.
Plus, last time we were faced with running the table or being eliminated from contention, we reeled off 5+1, so that gives me hope. Of course, it could all come crashing down next Sunday night (I don't think 8-8 will get it done, despite everything), but I'm eager to see how TC fares in a start with a week to prepare.
I'm with macaro. I'm going to enjoy the heck out of this week, because it might be the last week like it for a year.

"the patently-putrid NFC"
of course, when last I checked the "patently -putrid" NFC was above .500 against the "ridiculously-overrated" AFC this year. Its parity. Even between the conferences. Deal with it.
People think the AFC is so much better because it has the only two teams that have risen above the pack: NE and Indi. Of course, it also has easily the worst two teams in the league in Miami and the Jets.

cl,
I'm just worried about the following:
We never play well at Giants Stadium. Minny runs buck wild at home. And Dallas is Dallas.
Saying that, do you like mexican or italian, Lisa? If you wouldn't dare look at my face, I will send lunch to your office.
I will also write Gibbs a letter of apology and will post it on the blog before sending it off.
So that's two things for me. What is everyone else willing to do?

They were both chosen ahead of Rogers. We got sloppy thirds, and still got the best of the three.
Other free agent busts? Coles, Hall, and that kick return dude we got in negotiation.
Lloyd and Duckett were not free agents. We traded for them.
Gibbs' biggest failures as a GM have been in wasting draft picks and in overpaying.

p.s. I'm even farther away from the jcabana/te talk about free agency and the draft. We still got us a game to win this weekend!
Posted by: dcsween | December 10, 2007 11:09 AM
Nate:
If I were the Jints, I don't know how much I'd relax against the Redskins if the other two remaining teams on my schedule were Buffalo and New England. But if they do want to relax a little, that's okay with me.
As for playing Tampa or Seattle, I was thinking about that the other day. If we were to play Seattle, then good for me, because the game is but an hour's drive away and I'd be able to go. But Qwest is a hard place for visiting teams to play, especially in the playoffs. I was at the game two years ago, and it was louder than heck.
So I'd be willing to take one for the team, so to speak, and be relegated to watching us play on TV at RayJay if it means a better shot at a win.
Especially since Seattle seems to be getting hot again. They looked great against AZ yesterday.

Posted by: trailblazer658 | December 10, 2007 11:10 AM
Look at it this way: Saints are going to lose at least one more, so the Skins essentially control their own destiny with three to play. How many people would not have taken that in August after a 5-11 debacle with a QB with 7 starts under his belt?
EVEN BETTER: if you'd known coming into the season that we would lose Jansen for the year in Week 1, that Randy Thomas would miss about 10 games, and that our best player would literally be murdered about mid season, and we would control our own playoff destiny with 3-to-go, I bet you all would have said it was impossible. Kudos to the coaches and players I say.

It's a good thing Dallas is the final week, as Romo and TO will probably see limited playing time, eh? Maybe Wade will even throw ol Joe a bone and sit them entirely. You never know. This is definitely doable.

Good grief, freakzilla, it hadn't even occurred to me that the Skins might be playing in the first weekend of January, just a few hours up the road!
I have been making advance plans for Seattle and maybe SF next season, when the Skins are definitely going to be visiting those fair cities... but this possibility totally escaped me until your post.

Complaint of the day:
Watching the Pats game yesterday it dawned on me that they MIGHT (again, MIGHT) not be trying to run up the score on the opposing team. They throw up 30 points because that is the best way they know how to move the chains and control the clock.
Soooo, why in the heck can't we try something like that? 5-7 yard, short, high percentage passes is a whole lot better than sending in the jumbo (79 eligible????) and running 40 gut into the line for 2 yards three straight plays. I understand a dropped pass stops the clock, but that is why you incorporate short, safe passes into your run-out-the-clock strategy.
I don't think I'll ever be able to get over the way we've lost some of these games over the past 4 years.

RB, you just described Brunell version 2006. There is a big difference between the players and the play calling. Brady & co. were able to pull that off b/c they can figure out (in real time, not "game planning") how to beat a team.
My favorite thing about the Skins' win against the Bears was how the Skins' did a "half time adjustment" ... where the adjustment was to play the second half based on what worked in the first half (admittedly, not too much till the two minute warning), rather than some pre-formulated "game plan." I swear that the second half cratering this season has NOT been b/c the opponents have figured us out at half time ... its b/c we have followed some "game plan" from practice rather than actually adjusting to and sticking with what worked in the first half.

Off-topic for a sec -
Dorf, are you doing your grad work at JMU?
I was driving thru H'burg with the fam after Thanksgiving, and we were listening to JMU vs App St - and just as we're driving through campus, and I'm thinking we're gonna pull off the upset...game over. 2+ weeks later and I'm still disappointed. I hope Delaware beats the pants off App St in the championship.
Back to our regularly scheduled Redskins chat...
I know this has probably been hashed out already, but what happens if we run the table with Collins at the helm, make it to the playoffs, and win the wild-card round with Collins(!), regardless of what happens next? Is it the start of another QB controversy for the Skins? It's been a while since we've had one around here...
Also, who would have more success as HC of the Skins, should Gibbs retire again - Saunders, Grilliams, or an outside candidate?
Re: this week's game @ the Jints - I say it's even money. I watched the first half of the Jints-Iggles game this weekend, and neither team looked that good after the Eagles' opening drive. The Giants' O-line looks like it was cut from the same block of Swiss cheese as ours. Eli did not play well for most of the game, and if not for Akers missing that kick (HAHAHA! I'm not a fan of Akers), the Giants could easily have lost in overtime. The only reason they're at 9-4 and we're at 6-7 is that they won their close games and we lost ours. Wins at GB, Buffalo, and Tampa would tie us with the Giants and practically lock us for the wild-card spot. I know, nothing new being said there. But that does bring me back to my Collins question above (assuming his game on Thursday was not a fluke) - if he proves himself capable of sealing the deal in close games, or making more TDs than INTs per game, do we have a brand-new QB controversy in DC?
Posted by: jaradel | December 10, 2007 12:08 PM
I would think that it does.... If we not only win with Collins but play well absolutely. Especially with Gibbs 2.0 in it's last year.
1. We know Gibbs prefers a veteran (Brunell overstaying si welcome for half a season). 2. Remember this the TODD is Saunders boy and knows the offense. 3. There is no question JC is the future of the skins (we hope) but going back to my first point Gibbs is going to want to finish out this part of his legacy strong (if possible). Really if the TODD comes in and manages this offense and we WIN why take him out Campbell is young and will get his chance.

Actually, liberalmike, the top two teams in the AFC are 24-2 combined, as is the top two teams in the NFC 24-2. Indy beats the pats in that game, they all have 12-1 records.
So really, it is even in my mind, and it scares me to think but the girls could win it all this year.
Posted by: Zebraskins | December 10, 2007 12:19 PM
Soooo, why in the heck can't we try something like that? 5-7 yard, short, high percentage passes is a whole lot better than sending in the jumbo (79 eligible????) and running 40 gut into the line for 2 yards three straight plays. I understand a dropped pass stops the clock, but that is why you incorporate short, safe passes into your run-out-the-clock strategy.
I don't think I'll ever be able to get over the way we've lost some of these games over the past 4 years.
Posted by: RickyBobby | December 10, 2007 11:22 AM
It's personnel as well I believe. The skins don't have someone like Randy Moss(especially combined with Stallworth) that scares the bejeebus out of the secondary and leaves the underneath stuff open all the time.
Have to agree with Wise's(?) column that it's do-or-die time now for Saunders and his vaunted 750-pg playbook since he's got his guy at QB now.

Skins run the table
Lisa and RB fall madly in love (Rick shaves his stray chest hairs that tend to scamper over the top of his shirt, and Lisa concedes pessimism is indeed a wonderful companion of fanaticism when living in DC - a lethal first date combo)
JLC finds himself at PG's mercy during the Vegas bach party - waking up with a donkey - two midget prostitutes, and his entire body painted blue with his head shaved
During the bachlorette party in Phoenix super bowl weekend - pics escape of Megskin and Lisa placing on fire brown paper bags filled with unknown substance in front of Patriots players hotel room doors.
At the wedding PDiddy dares me to "splash the cake". I agree. Perfect night.

We need some better laws in the United States. Think of what you could do and not get 23 months. Either dogs are over valued or people under valued.
I think we will beat the Giants and Cowboys. The vikings scare me.

The Giants in NY are the team that worries me most. We haven't played well up there in a looong time. The vikings seem to one dimensional. I may be wrong (and often am)

Ricky Bobby and Lisa could be the blog wedding we've been looking for to boost those numbers during the dull days of July!
And, can we please refer to this era of Redskins fubball -- however long it lasts -- as Toddball? That would make me happy.

* Fantasy Post *
My bad 4-12, I forgot that team was you. I'm regretting that Vinatieri miss against San Diego even more now, if he makes that kick I'm 7-6 and wanting 24 points out of Brees to win our division!
Good luck later, but I think you end up out of the running for the post-season, like me. :)
Posted by: Redcoat | December 10, 2007 12:33 PM
In case you were not aware the TODD has his own blog here is a small excerpt from it;
I am now undefeated as a starting QB since 1997. The 144.6 QB rating that I'm sporting this season is second only to my legendary 156.9 rating in 2002. And most importantly, the interception streak is still alive at ten years. You saw me throw 54 yard bombs to Clinton, exhibit deft touch to Betts and make Yoder look like Cooley. I don't want to book my ticket for Hawaii just yet, but let's just say that my travel agent should be hearing from me sometime soon.
Ok, well I gotta get back to partying. No practice for TC since I've had Papa Al's playbook memorized for a good seven years.
Take Care and you'll be hearing from me early next week.

Cindy,
If opposites attract, the this will be a collision and the wedding will be late winter, not July. And, the Redskins have to roll off three wins.
Toddball sounds good. Let's see it in the print edition, first.

Cindy, I have been waiting for an opportunity to refer to this part of the season as "Wicked ReTodded." Thanks for providing that opportunity.
Also, a belated Happy Toddukah, and an early Merry Toddsmas, and a very early Happy New Todd to you all.

Watched the Gints/Eagles game just to torture myself and concluded
the Gints O isn't that good and can easily be stopped
the Gints D is pretty damn impressive, especially if you can't keep their D Line from pressuring the QB
If I'm a Skins fan, I'm hoping Crazy Al is looking at a 65/35 pass to run ratio with a lot of slants and looks to Cooley to exploit the Gints D's limited coverage skills.

Okay ladies and gents, time for a dose of reality here. The Redskins are NOT going to make the playoffs.
I don't see them beating the Giants in the Meadowlands, and I certainly don't see them beating the Vikings and their two-headed monster running attack with Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor.
And even by some miracle the Skins beat the Giants and Vikings, the ultimate irony in all of this is that Redskins fans will need to resort to cheering for (you guessed it) the Cowboys. If for whatever reason Dallas loses to Philadelphia or Carolina, they will play all of their starters in Week 17 to avoid losing the home field advantage throughout the playoffs to the Packers, who have a much easier schedule.
Posted by: owiz | December 10, 2007 12:45 PM
Wow, thanks, owiz! Appreciate that dose of reality! Glad I can now embrace a loser mentality this week! What a relief!

This blog doesn't deal in doses of reality. It deals in angst, strife and name-calling mixed with liberal doses of fanaticism and Kool-Aid drinking.
Reality is not welcome on a 6-7 team, thank you very much.

owiz,
You saying that the big night out with Lisa and Ricky Bobby isn't happening? Take that somewhere else. We're not buying your so called "reality." We do romance and fantasy on Mondays. Reality's for Sunday after the game. Or Mondays after a Sunday loss.
And rooting for the Cowboys? You bet. Started yesterday and I'm for them all the way to the Super Bowl if they can stick a fork in the Patriots.

Of course, the Toddskins have a chance against the Gints. The Toddskins always do well after their bye, do they not? And this is practically a bye week....ergo, they will win this game.

Is there a combination of skins losing + somebody else winning that makes the skins-vikes game irrelevant? That may be the NBC flexi-schedule calculation....

I am conflicted. While I would like to see the team make the playoffs, what benefit would that be? Let's face it, the Redskins would lose no matter which team they play. So if they make the playoffs and lose, they sacrifice a higher draft choice (which they should trade to get additional draft picks). This team needs to build depth. This quick-fix approach has put the team in a position of vulnerability with injuries(see 2007 season). To jcabana: Gibbs as a personnel man leaves much to be desired. This team has given draft picks away like candy. Let me ask you a question: Tony Romo or Jason Campbell? I would take Romo any day of the week.
Posted by: svtodoro | December 10, 2007 1:38 PM
JLC loves Kornheiser.
This explains sooooo much!
I'd say he is the worst announcer ever but a Byrant Gumbel is the king in that castle!
Posted by: filmchis | December 10, 2007 1:54 PM
Wow...I wonder what speech Ole' Joe can come up with to get the team to run the table? I think he may have used it up two years ago...and oh' yeah, he used the old "swingin' soul" line already.
Maybe he should play a clip of Herm "you play to win the game" Edwards.
Hail!!!
Posted by: rickyroge | December 10, 2007 1:57 PM
Keep in mind that we actually have a realistic chance to shutting the evil Giants out of the post-season. They have yet to take their turn in the woodshed with the Pats (last game) and I doubt that NE takes the day off with perfection on the line (and I doubt if they would anyway). Buffalo is looking less like a push-over (in BUF wk #16). We beat NYG and win out then we would tie them in overall, conf and divisional records. We go based on "Strength of win" because we beat MIN and ARI and they beat SF and ATL. --Cookie
Posted by: scook121 | December 10, 2007 3:21 PM
Despite the fact that ANY playoff talk is horrible yet pleasurable torture -- and the sentiment to only raise an eyebrow if they beat NY -- anything can happen in the post-season with the craptastic teams in the NFC (including DALLAS - ripe for a karmic upset since the Patriots probably are insulated from it).
