New QB On Practice Squad
The Skins have no immediate plans to put Jason Campbell on IR for now, but they did sign QB Jason Fife, who played at Oregon, to the practice squad (LB Tyson Smith was released from the practice squad).
Campbell said he has a sprained MCL as well as the dislocated left knee cap, and that he figures he is out probably four weeks at least, but will not know for sure until another week, when they evaluate the degree of swelling. Jason said no one in the organization had clarified specifically whether or not he would be put on IR, but he was holding out hope of getting a chance to play in the playoffs.

JLC-
I wouldn't be so quick to "stand behind" that guy Ken's stats regarding the Redskins playoff chances. He claims that if the Redskins win out, they have a 92% chance of making the playoffs, but only a 22% of becoming a 5 seed (and a 70% chance of becoming the 6 seed). That is ridiculous.
Let me explain.
If we win out, that would mean we beat the Giants. In order for us to get the 5 seed, the giants have to lose their remaining 2 games as well, which are at Buffalo (who is fighting for a playoff spot) and vs New England (who is fighting to become the first ever 16-0 team). So, according to this guy Ken's website, the Giants have a 68% chance of winning either at Buffalo or vs New England.
No way.

That should say: "according to this guy Ken's website, the Giants have a 58% chance of winning either at Buffalo or vs New England"
Posted by: Barno1 | December 11, 2007 11:10 AM
Guys, why are we talking about Playoffs. Have any of you watched us play over the past month. We have looked terrible.
Lets just win and look good for one game before we even consider the Playoffs.
I think 6 -10 looks far more likely for us than 9-7, but I hope I eat these words!

More odd comments from JLC:
"The Skins have no immediate plans to put Jason Campbell on IR for now"
followed by:
"Jason said no one in the organization had clarified specifically whether or not he would be put on IR"
It would appear that Jason la Canfora is again trying to embarrass the organization, but in his latest bizarre attempt, he screws up by contradicting the insinuation that Campbell doesn't know his status...
Posted by: Barno1 | December 11, 2007 11:15 AM
I think the Giants will beat Buffalo but they will lose their other two games left. The only the Giants fall from 5 to 6 IMO is if Minnesota wins out.
Beside the point, we only need to worry about the Skins winning games because if we don't then what the other teams do or the perecentage don't matter.

Why are we talking about playoffs, waaaaaah! Let's talk about intentionally losing so we can get a slightly higher draft pick, waaaaah! Yeah let's lose every game for the next 5 years and then we'll have some really high draft picks and maybe 10 years from now we'll be good, waaaaah!

Posted by: X_1967 | December 11, 2007 11:32 AM
Cambell is the starter next year regardless, but I don't think he should play another snap this year.
If the Redskins do by some chance run hte table and make the playoffs, then obviously Collins is on fire and it would make no sense to change a QB who has just won 4 straight games for you. Similarly, if the Skins don't run the table, it doesn't make much sense putting Cambell back in for the last game of the year where he could agravate something and probably would not be 100%.
There is only one scenario where Cambell should play again this year (and the only reason he should not be put on IR), and that would be if Collins takes them to the playoffs but gets injured in one of the playoff games.

Plax, and Shockey are going to be tough to contain, the Redskins are going to need to get HUGE pressure on Manning. From watching some of the Philly game, the Eagles seemed to be able to get pressure just rushing their front 4.

But I think from looking at their D stats on nfl.com that the one area where they seem to be particularly susceptible is to the big pass. They have given up 37 pass plays of 20+ yards (which ranks them 20th in the nfl) and 9 plays of 40+ (30th). That's almost 1 40+ pass play per game and almost 3 plays of 20+ per game. Todd is gonna need to make the big play when it's there.
Posted by: WrongDog | December 11, 2007 11:00 AM
The only way the current incarnation of the team is going to make a 40+ yard pass play is for TC to throw 20 yards downfield to Randle El, who in turn stops and throws the ball another 20 yards downfield to Cooley or Moss. However, last time I checked, that play was illegal in the NFL.
Reality: with the Giants' defensive line and the Skins' offensive (in every sense of the word) line, TC will only have enough time for the receivers to run 20-yard patterns. Considering the below-par efforts of the Giants' secondary, that should be enough for the Redskins to move up and down the field at will.
The logical approach would be to run Moss deep on every play (taking with him a cornerback and a safety), and have Randle El, McCardell and Mix ready to catch passes on 3 out of every 4 plays.

Well right now weather.com is calling for a high of 35 (no doubt sub-30 at kickoff), 70% chance of snow, and high winds (25 mph+) for the game, so maybe defending the deep ball to Plax just got a little easier. See below:

Sunday for us is gonna be all about the YAC.
And as we all know, YAC spelled backwards is TODD.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 11, 2007 11:40 AM
Tafka, don't misunderestimate the value of actually hitting a receiver in stride even on a short(er) crossing pattern. How many of Favre's TD passes this year have had 3 or 4x as much in yards after catch because he's hit the guy at the right time?
The Toddler looks like he can pass that way, so if you have ARE, and Cooley running those patterns while Moss goes deeper you could see bigger completions than you think.
Everyone is vulnerable to those plays.

I posted about three hours of yesterday's Toddmania on the Wiki. It's edited somewhat although I couldn't get rid of all those misspellings by Redcoat/Toddcoat. His people are so backwards writing stuff like "favourite" instead of "favorite." Don't they have schools over there?

It's a wiki, so if your favorite was left off, add it. And if your favourite was left off, it was deliberate.

Why would they bring someone in who was not here in the preseason? Were Bramlet, Hollenbach, Baby Palmer that bad off that we would bring somebody in totally new? This could be critical as we need to get younger at the backup QB going forward. Unless COllins pulls off a miracle.

Bless you for the do-Todd-Todd-Todd, tafka. (there's a sentence I'll likely never utter again.)
It's not a stretch to imagine Wade sitting TO y Romo for most of, if not all of, the game in week 17. It's possible that the Cowboys could have an inept offense.

4-12,
Did not want to get on that tangent today but I thought the same exact thing last night watching the game. How could they get rid of that and keep Lloyd? Maybe we can get him back. I would think the Saints were able to sign him to a one year deal not knowing what he would do.

Posted by: Soup17 | December 11, 2007 11:29 AM
The only saving grace to this is that all three of those teams' offenses have looked inept against good defenses. For the coming week, Eli always looks inept for about 75% of each game. The key is to get a lead and then keep playing aggressively on offense so that he can't get on the field in the 4th quarter.
Posted by: tafka | December 11, 2007 11:50 AM
Were Bramlet, Hollenbach, Baby Palmer that bad off that we would bring somebody in totally new?
Posted by: straub21 | December 11, 2007 11:44 AM
Yes. Why do you think they didn't keep any of them on the practice squad?
Look, at this point of the season, the Redskins need to be looking at as many players as they can for next year. What risk is there in bringing in a QB they haven't seen?
Anyway, the dude will probably run scout team plays so he doesn't need to know the Redskins' offense. Just the Giants, Minnesota's, and Dallas's.
The guy has to be the next Romo, which everyone up here is always asking for.

It feels like the Skins have DEMONSTRATED they can beat the Giants, at least in the first half ... its just a matter of containing Burress and not running the jumbo package on the goal line with Yoder as the key blocker. Last week, for what seemed like the first time in a long time, the Skins had a better game in the second half than they did in the first (this could be colored by the fact that I may or may not have stopped drinking during the game at the arctic outpost previously known as FedEx).

Patten didn't make a play for the Redskins. In his two years here he made 23 receptions for 242 yards. Those 23 receptions were on 57 balls thrown his way.
Why did we keep Lloyd? He was under contract and we couldn't afford the cap hit to let him go.

Lets get one thing clear BARNO;
J La was commended by one blog guru himself; Peter King; on how to do a blog, during ST tragedy.
People who's job it is to oversee the post sports and this blog seem to think he is doing a great job. Last time I checked, your resume does not say Sports editor or know it all emeritus.
We all keep coming here, so he must be doing something right. He is the lead beat writer for the most important topic in washington.
And last but not least, you must admit the ferver which ever skins fan has in his blood. So dont you think your opinion of Jasno might be slighty altered by the burgundy and gold glasses and all that kool aid you've been drinking all these years?
I for one would bet my life savings on the fact that our bias outwieghs anyone else negative bias by a million fold.
Jasno came in, as an outsider to a team who had only made the playoffs once and was told to cover them and write about them. And so he has, about inept coaching, blown leads, crazy personel moves etc...His slant on the team is much more objective than any of ours since we have lived, breathed and died with this team for how many ever years
Lastly I will say this, he gives us much more inside info than any other reporter/blogger ever has. So ignoring his personal preference for the team, it would be a disservice to all involved if Jasno was not running htis blog or reporting.
So either you DO have an axe to grind, or you are just simply blind to the facts.
** End of Soapbox Rant **

Another way of thinking I don't get. Yeah, if something is wrong in the world, don't try to do something about it, just ignore it. If everyone thought this way, there wouldn't be any Jews left because the Nazis would've continued with their holocaust. Now, I'm not in any way trying to compare JLC to a Nazi, but I am saying that you don't just ignore things that you think are wrong. You try to do something about it.
And I am to do something about the agenda-driven coverage Jason La Canfora provides by bringing it to the attention of his readers.

Re: Jason La Canfora must be doing something right.
Zebraskins,
yes, he is doing something right: He is helping sell papers and helping generate advertisement revenue by creating controversy. Controversy sells. When he claims "many" unnamed veterans on the team bash Gibbs privately, that sells...whether it's true or not.
And is it really true? Does JLC really have this magical rapport with so "many" veterans that he is able to get them to routinely criticize their Hall of Fame head coach privately to him and no other reporter in town? Haven't you wondered why don't you see that stuff reported elsewhere?
Ever heard of Jayson Blair?

Barno! Bingo! Godwin's Law:
"As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one, and the person who makes it is a hopeless twit."
Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 11, 2007 12:43 PM
Now, I'm not in any way trying to compare JLC to a Nazi, but I am saying that you don't just ignore things that you think are wrong. You try to do something about it
Posted by: Barno | December 11, 2007 12:34 PM
Barno,
Friendly word of advice: Anytime you can compare making comments on a blog to fighting Nazis, you have to do a "tad" bit of rethinking your level of self-seriousness.
Posted by: dandhhilton | December 11, 2007 12:43 PM
And keep posting your stuff up here, but dont go crying foul when people call you out on it.

Hypocrite..er...I mean Zebraskins,
the people on here never asked for your HELP on enlightening us to YOUR opinion either.
No one on here "asked" for anyone's "opinion." It's called a "comment section" for a reason. You don't need permission from the others on here to give your opinion.
What a douche bag.

Did everyone have to name their child Jason?????????? It's very confusing.
Posted by: TheCindy | December 11, 2007 12:39 PM
Only the first child, Cindy. The second can be named Jasno.
Posted by: talent_evaluator | December 11, 2007 12:47 PM
Barno, if Jasno has a bias, I would say it's against people who come on to his blog and shower him with undue amounts of criticism.
Some of your criticism of Jasno's work is founded, but so much of it seems like overkill. That's what I mean by having an axe to grind.
Parsing his every word, combing through text and subtext for any grievance... come on, dude, you need a new hobby! There have to be more fulfilling ways to spend your days, bro!
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 11, 2007 12:48 PM
So your saying there is no controversy on this team, and it is all made up by Jasno. The benching of LaVar? The benching of Archibingus, Lloyd? Trading up, Trading Down
Jasno has it easy, this team writes itself. I am the perpetual optimist, but god we look DUMB to the rest of the league and Jasno is unbiased enough to see it.
Posted by: Zebraskins | December 11, 2007 12:49 PM
Actually, Barno, Zebra's opinion is one of the most valued up here. So we always like it when he weighs in. Usually, he throws a flag. Yours might be 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct -- it's up to Zebra, of course. Others might get a flag, or at least a warning, for piling on. There again, it's up to Zebra.

Posted by: suzannepdc | December 11, 2007 12:51 PM
JC shouldn't play any more this season, even if we make the playoffs. Three reasons:
1. If we make the postseason, it will be because of Todd. He'll have earned the PT.
2. If Todd's grasp of Al offense is what propels us into the the postseason, then it would be foolish to remove the key cog just so that you can put the less-experienced franchise QB back in. Do what gives you the best chance to win.
3. Suppose JC "can come back" in 4 weeks. "Can come back" is not the same as "be 100%." Not even close, and he'll be just one tackle away from re-injury, possibly even exacerbating the injury. Plus, playing on his hurt knee would make him tenuous and give him something extra to think about, and that can only be a negative as he tries to make good decisions with the ball. And any mobility that he might normally have over Todd would be largely negated.
Jason is still our franchise guy, but he needs to sit the rest of this one out.

The difference is barno, that I didnt give my opinion. I stated the facts in the first post. You went on to tafka as if you were saving our dumb little herd pee brains from what we know not.
Thats when I made the comment about your opinion, and yes, it was my opinion of your opinion. But I do believe the overall sentiment of mine is shared here, and that is how this whole thing started.
Deflect somewhere else. I said go ahead and comment, free country blah blah but dont cry foul when people call you out on it, re: the DVD thing.

RE: "Anytime you can compare making comments on a blog to fighting Nazis, you have to do a "tad" bit of rethinking your level of self-seriousness."
What I said was: you don't just ignore things you think are wrong. Any comparison I could use there to something else in the world that is wrong would seem like a stretch.
I could've said: "you don't just ignore things you think are wrong. if you see someone who is about to get killed, you don't just ignore it" then the fools on this board would scream "oh my god you just compared criticizing a reporter with saving someone's life."
So any comparison I used there would've been taken out of context by the nerds on here.

"The Skins have no immediate plans to put Jason Campbell on IR for now"
followed by:
"Jason said no one in the organization had clarified specifically whether or not he would be put on IR"
This appears to have more to do with the Gibbs Method than anything else. The same problem occurred specifically with the 1987 team. Bostic didn't know why he got benched at center in favor of Grimm; Doug Williams didn't know why he wasn't starting rather than Schroeder. It seems that Gibbs has a tendency to forget telling the affected players exactly what is happening. Maybe the players should attend Gibbs' press conferences to find out.

NateinthePDX,
I appreciate your comments, and you have a reasonable suggestion--that I shouldn't comb through every article, every post, etc to looking for any grievance. I understand where guys like you are coming from; you enjoy the forum, are grateful for the amount of information Jasno passes along to us, etc.
All I'm saying is that he needs to be more responsible. That is it.
I'll drop it for now...

And Barno, lest my words above be misinterpreted, I wholeheartedly agree with chris LArry that you should keep it up!
The point I was trying to make above is that, for your own sake, it might be good to find another outlet for what appears to be the considerable amount of energy you're investing in tilting at this particular windmill.
(If you could make it a wee bit more entertaining and a little less pedantic/preachy, that would be swell! But that's just a suggestion!)

I'm torn up here. I'm pro-Barno (except for the family sex thing), but I'm also pro-Jasno (especially for the anti-The Owner thing).
What troubles me most (other than the insufficient amount of cowbell), is that Shockey (who I stopped hating for about 45 seconds during the Sean Taylor memorial service) has figured out a way to get chicks to auto-porn him, come to his party, and get drunk. If only I had thought of THAT! (that and remembering to be a stud tight end at The U).
Though my feelings for the loss of the recently former best overall talent on the team are still very raw, I think that now is the time that the Skins faithful can all join together (Barnos and Jasnos alike) in their abhorrence of the abomination called Shockey. Lust for mayhem on Shockey!

why does everyone assume bad weather will benefit the Giants. The main thing it does is negate the deep pass. I don't think there's any question they rely more on that part of the game than we do. Eli has trouble hitting the short and medium stuff in good weather.
Look for the Skins to loosen up the Giants with short passes. The Todd will hit the receivers in stride a couple of times to get the safety out of the box. Once that happens, look for 100+ (4.5 per carry) from Portis and a Redskins victory.

I think it does that because if you dont post for a while, it removes the comments box and you have to 'click here'. But sometimes you can still write in the box even though it is inactive, and when you hit submit, it is more like a refresh and goes back to the 'clikc here' screen.
Just an issue with the programming. they have a loop they have to close so it calls the right page.

Try making a comparison that doesn't involve "saving a life" or the Holocaust. Arguments work better when you make a comparison that's comparable. Sadly the only thing comparable to your ridiculously contrived campaign against JLC's supposedly biased Skins coverage is your ridiculously contrived campaign against JLC's supposedly biased Skins coverage.

A pox on your house, SMACK! Colston putting up TWENTY ONE points! I was biting my tongue (well, knuckles anyway) not wanting to jinx my six point lead going into last night's game. I didn't want to jinx it by talking smack ... and it turns out I did jinx it b/c talking smack to SMACK has a double reverse counter-re-jinxing effect. Damb! Our #1 receiver (Cooley) is no stranger to playing in the snow He went to Utah State University
Besides let's not forget TODD 1.0 was in Buffalo. He is used to playing in bad weather.

On the game this weekend, I am not saying this out of any love and I'm probably going out on a limb, but I'm saying that Plaxico Burress is the most dangerous receiver in the NFL right now ... and this includes T.O. and Randy Moss (who have comparatively reliable QBs throwing to them). Burress is a friggin liability for the Skins ... and he's HURT!
The one little luck blip for the Skins this weekend (there aren't many) is that Derrick Ward is out on IR. Jacobs and Droughns? pfptpffft. The Skins MUST control Burress to keep this game real. [On Cooley v. Shockey, its a push. We have the proverbial tit for tat ... though I'm guessing Shockey has more of the former in store for New Year's Eve.]
Posted by: dcsween | December 11, 2007 3:31 PM
Its also lucky for the Skins that Burress is banged up.

Since many folks confuse Todd Collins the quarterback with Tom Collins the drink, we've combined the two. Our drink of choice during the Skins-Giants game -- bourbon and ginger -- so the concoction is heretofore known as the Todd Collins. And it's delicious.

Comeback player of the week: Todd Collins
Remember him? You couldn't blame the Redskins backup quarterback if he were a bit rusty in replacing knee-injured starter Jason Campbell during Thursday's win against Chicago. Collins -- a 13th-year pro who once started in Buffalo as the successor to Jim Kelly -- had completed just one pass since 2003. But he was extremely sharp off the bench, completing 15 of 20 passes for 224 yards with two TDs, zero INTs and a whopping 144.6 passer rating. The Redskins hope he's got more of that

Posted by: trailblazer658 | December 11, 2007 7:32 PM
Dick Vermeil's comments on Todd-mania:
"He's so bright. He, better than anybody I've been around, can play well without taking practice reps. The reason is, he mentally takes the snap. In his mind, he envisions himself as the starter even when he's not starting."
I wonder who's super smarter? Mark Brunell or Todd Collins? If Todd Collins can fight his guts any where near how much Brunell can fight his guts out, we have a very bright playoff picture.
Poste
The Giants rush D is good:
96.1 y/g
3.9 y/c
7 TDs
7 of 20+ y
1 40+ y
But I think from looking at their D stats on nfl.com that the one area where they seem to be particularly susceptible is to the big pass. They have given up 37 pass plays of 20+ yards (which ranks them 20th in the nfl) and 9 plays of 40+ (30th). That's almost 1 40+ pass play per game and almost 3 plays of 20+ per game. Todd is gonna need to make the big play when it's there.
