NFC Playoff Calculator (and More)
Hey all ... Jon DeNunzio, sports editor at washingtonpost.com, here. The tech and design teams here just finished our NFC Playoff Calculator, which allows you to enter hypothetical results from the key games in Weeks 16 and 17 and see who would make the playoffs in each case.
We'll update the calculator on Sunday as the results roll in, too.
We tried to calculate seeds, as well, but the number of variables that would have come into play was unbelievable. Maybe next year.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it ... have a great weekend.
LATE ADD: Sports producer Lindsay Applebaum posted the Top 10 Things the Redskins Have Done Right This Season on "the List" discussion board. Check it out.
Ok, done shilling for now ...

Methinks the snowcam didn't do enough to keep in shape through the offseason. Looks like some bad warping in the lamination. That can only spell trouble in the winter ahead. Unless it's just a trick of the eye, one of those trump loyals.
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 21, 2007 12:02 PM
That is, if winter ever actually arrives, for real. It looks like rain storm after rain storm for DC into January. That isn't any fun!

Nope, Nate, you got it right. This ain't one of them trump loys. The webcam stick pulled a hammy.

toddcoat, I won't let the kids watch the WonderPets anymore. I caught it once (after being illuminated here) -- the show perpetuates ethnic stereotypes in the worst ways.
Posted by: dcsween | December 21, 2007 12:32 PM
Agreed, charlie.
It was a shame the gnome's agent and the union had to get involved and put the kibosh on that whole deal. Now it occurs to me that the gnome maybe could have gone through back channels and negotiated directly with the WaPowers-that-be. Oh well. Bygones.

trink, agreed. Every time I use the calculator it has the Skins going to the playoffs.

We need a little blogsprint to run up the numbers for the Toddimatum before people bolt out of town.
How about words (including proper nouns) that end with the syllable "-ij"?
Being that this is nominally a football blog, examples would include words like "scrimmage" or "yardage". [I curse myself for not splitting those two up into separate entries.]

I really think that Heyer will end up being a hidden gem on this line for years to come. In the next two drafts I think we need to plan on drafting 4 more rookie OL so that we can prepare to replace this entire starting line up over the corse of the next few years.
Samuels, Kendell, Rabach, Thomas and Jansen. I will be shocked if any of these guys are still playing 4-5 years from now. Don't get me wrong I like these guys a lot but they are in the last years of their career.

The only way I can kick this habit is to focus back onto Skins jibba jabba. Is it just me or does it feel like Jasno is reporting a mild undertone of "writing on the wall" for Cornelius. I don't have the link (linkage), but how does Griffin's cap number compare to the other top players? Even Jason Reid reported something about the young DTs today (yesterday?). What makes me wonder is a quote from Cornelius HIMSELF where his opening clause is about "maybe losing your job" or something like that ... it was right before the part where he talks about helping out young guys. I had a civics class in high school where the teacher integrated movies into the class at key points in the curriculum. Movies watched:
1776 (the musical, actually somewhat appropriate as it's about the Founding Fathers)
Nostradamus: The Man Who Saw Tomorrow (documentary, watched it all the way through twice at two different points of the semester)
Batman (ummm... Is vigilante justice a viable alternative? Discuss.)
Jaws: The Revenge (nothing says civics like Mario Van Peebles with a Jamaican accent, doing battle with a growling shark)

Vikings fans usaully aren't that bad, however this year may be an exception because its about the fourth time the team has had a chance to exceed 9 wins in the past 30 years.
It's going to be funny when they do nothing as usual.
P.S:
Lost Second Round (Redskins) 21-7 1982
Lost Conference Championship (Redskins) 17-10 1987
Lost Wild Card Playoffs (Redskins) 24-7 1992
The Vikings are also one of the few and great franchises to have never won a superbowl.
I'm fairly certain that no one, and i mean NO ONE is scared of a few fat slobs in the middle of the d line that WILL be torn apart.

Wonder what the the Sunday night game is next week. Seems to me the best rivalry in pro football woulda been a fine finale for NBC. Too much burgundy/gold for their sensibilities?

I'm a bit jealous -- all I've got on hand is Sam Adams; was hoping for a bit of Mackeson's Triple Stout at the grocery store this evening, but alas, it would appear they've moved on to the next great thing -- mike's hard lemonade.
they will learn to rue their choices!

Dallas can't be the national game after this Saturday. There is a six-game prime-time limit. Otherwise, I'd bet you they'd take that trade.
Interestingly, I thought they had to make the call by yesterday to move games; however, the rules are different in week 17:
"In Week 17, in order to ensure a Sunday night game with playoff implications, the decision to move the start time may be made on six days notice."
Also, apparently the 1:00 start time for the CowPies game is only a placeholder: "The majority of games on Sundays will be listed at 1:00 p.m. ET during flex weeks except for games played in Pacific or Mountain Time zones which will be listed at 4:05 or 4:15 p.m. ET."

Okay, so from that beer site I found this article on Yorkshire squares, a particular brewing system they use up there. It's so weird and amazing and inscrutable that I gotta share it.
"The yeast used in the Yorkshire system is unusual in that it acts particularly slowly and requires frequent rousing and aerating if it is to work properly. This action is due in part to the yeast's strongly top-fermenting qualities, which cause it to rise rapidly to the surface of the fermenting wort and thereby reduce its ability to perform its task of converting sugar into alcohol and carbon dioxide.
"The beers produced by the system, however, "drink very full for their gravities, and which, since they retain large quantities of carbon dioxide, are full of life." The effervescent nature of the beers brewed by the stone square system help to protect them from airborne infection during fermentation; it may also offer an explanation for another, peculiarly Yorkshire tradition, that of dispensing beer by means of handpumps fitted with autovac equipment, utilizing a very tight sparkle.
"The agitating action of the handpump displaces much of the dissolved carbon dioxide gas and at the same time introduces air into the beer. It is the air which produces the smooth texture to the beer and supports the long lasting, creamy head, so beloved of all serious beer drinkers in the Yorkshire area."

I'm sorry for your loss.
I use a 120 GB Western Digital Passport drive for iTunes. It's small, shock resistant, and doesn't require an external power source. iTunes was filling up a lot of space on my PowerBook's hard drive, so I decided to spring for the Passport, and it's been a great purchase.
(And no, I'm not a Mac snob, I use both Macs and PCs. The Mac is my primary personal machine, and my PCs I use mainly for work.)

So, even though we're not really big into basketball, we still went and enjoyed ourselves. The funniest thing I saw all game though?
Several times, when a Kings player would be at the free throw line, they'd put either the Cowboys logo or pictures of Jerry Jones and Troy Aikman up on the jumbotron. It worked perfectly - everyone in the building started booing their guts out. It was a different sort of BYGO

Prediction:
REDSKINS 24 VIKINGS 10
Here's why
1. Over the last five wins, Vikes have played the 25th ranked defense (Oakland); the 7th (Giants); the 31st (Lions); the 23rd(Niners); and the 29th (Chicago).
2. Those teams have the 31st ranked rush defense (Raiders); the 12th (Giants); the 21st (Lions); the 23rd (Niners); and the 25th (Bears).
3. The Giants game: picked off BBM 4 times with 3 returned for TD's. In two meetings with the Jints, they've picked off Eli 8 times, taking back 4 all the way nearly a fifth. They just flat have the Jints' number...
4. A rebuilding team going for a sixth straight win is extremely hard to do. They're a good young team but still learning to win.
5. Last week's performance was bloody awful. Any team with an offense would've beat the Vikes last week. They won't be that lucky this week.
6. Gibbs likes the Metrodome......He wins there.
Posted by: Soups1 | December 22, 2007 10:46 AM

When Jasno wrote on Thursday that LaRon was having difficulty running in practice because of the quad injury (apparently suffered last Sun. night), I was actually somewhat encouraged, because Jasno didn't say that LaRon was having trouble walking.
I partially tore my left quad a couple of years ago doing squats, and didn't notice it at the time of the tear. That's probably why LaRon didn't seem hobbled by it in the game, since it's not like pulling a muscle.
The evening of the day that I tore my quad, I could feel some tightness developing, but I thought it was just post-workout soreness, because I hadn't worked out in a while. The next morning, I could barely get out of bed, it hurt so badly.
Then I had to drive myself to the ER, and my truck is a manual, so I had to clutch with my bum leg. I was on crutches for a week, then the doc said to ditch the crutches and start putting weight on it again, and I hobbled for a few more weeks before I was able to walk normally again.
So if running was the issue on Thursday, I'm pretty hopeful about his limitations against Minny.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 22, 2007 4:13 PM
Okay, I was just playing with the NFC playoff calcumulator, and found an error.
I just ran the following scenario:
Week 16
Carolina beats Dallas
Buffalo beats NYG
New Orleans beats Philly
Skins beat Minnies
Week 17
Patriots beat NYG
Tampa Bay beats Carolina
New Orleans beats Chicago
Skins beat Cowgirls
Denver beats Minnies
The calcumulator says that in this scenario, the wildcard teams are:
Skins
Minnies
But that's not possible, because the Vikings would only be 8-8, while the Skins, Saints, and Jints would all be 9-7.
Saints would get in as the #5 seed, Skins would be #6.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 22, 2007 4:57 PM
that's what happens when you let Jasno loose with the Javascript. He's got the pluses pretty well down, but the minus key is his mortal enemy.
Posted by: daggar | December 22, 2007 5:24 PM
Of course, R, T, and E are also firmly in the enemy camp. If they can get Q, W, and Y to shift alliances, we'll never hear from Jasno again.
Or at least, never understand what he's trying to type.
Posted by: daggar | December 22, 2007 5:26 PM
So I've pretty much eaten only vegetables and fruit for the past 24 hours, to offset the next three days, which will involve a steady stream of ham, sausage, herring, lox, rice porridge, ris ala malta (dessert of leftover rice porridge mixed with cream and oranges, so good), the dozen different kinds of traditional cookies and chocolates that my mother-in-law makes, saffron bread, beer, wine, homemade Bailey's, and aquavit.
I believe someone will be working from home on Wednesday.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 22, 2007 5:30 PM
That calculator sucks-
it says if the Skins go 2-0 and NO, Jints and Minn all go 1-1
then Minn and the Skins are in the playoffs.
WTF?
Posted by: cmecyclist | December 22, 2007 5:40 PM
Everyone in the national sports media is loving the Vikings in this game...everyone. They say Tavaris just had a bad game Monday night but he still drove his team down the field to a victory. Also they predict Peterson will not be held in check tomorrow night..he will run all over us....and CP will not be able to run against the Vikings at all. Collins will be forced to pass and it's gonna be ugly. Makes me scared to even watch.
Jeremy Green from Scouts, Inc. gives the Vikings very high marks to possibly even make it to the NFC championship. Of course Jeremy is Denny Green's son...but STILL.
Posted by: Lisa_R | December 22, 2007 5:45 PM
that is - Jints would get in and not Minn.

Should be a great game tomorrow night. I'm a Vikes fan and we have a huge fan club at The Tortoise & Hare in Crystal City. But putting aside my partisan cap and putting on my football cap here's what I see.
Last year with the Skins at full strength the Vikings came in with a rag-armed Brad Johnson and no AD and managed a win on opening night. Williams will no doubt blitz, blitz, blitz. Look for the Vikings to counter with quick stick throws on slants and run some counter stuff and pitches to get AD and CT to the edges. They'll probably throw a good bit on first down too.
On the Skins side of the ball they should try and get Darren Sharper and Dwight Smith looking into the backfield with some flea-flicker, play-action stuff and try and get Moss behind them. Quite doable. As for running the ball. Just forget about it between the tackles because that ain't happening. The only back to pass a buck against them was GB's Ryan Grant running toward the edges where Antoine Winfield's sure tackling will be missed.
Game will probably come down to who makes the fewest turnovers. Vikes kick coverage isn't that hot either. Advantage there to the Skins.

Lisa,
Listening to the "experts," it sounds like we've got nothing to lose tomorrow night, so our guys might as well go have some fun out there. :)
Reminds me of the Redskins 1991 video yearbook, where one of the coaches (Don Breaux, IIRC) tells his guys in a pre-game huddle, "There's a lot of great things we could be doing today, and the best one is kicking their ass!"
I think of that line every time I need some motivation.
I'm not worried.
