Odds and Ends
Santana Moss and Clinton Portis were sent home with the stomach flu, but both are expected to be fine for the weekend.
Gibbs decided to cancel practice today and do more of a walk-thru today, after such a physical game Sunday night, but will return to normal practice Thursday.
TE Todd Yoder is still suffering from a sore knee, and his status is uncertain. "We have to wait and watch it," Coach Joe Gibbs said.
Coach Joe said he didn't watch the game Monday night between the Vikings and Bears - as a rule he watches the game film only (except for Thanksgiving Day games at Coach Don Breaux's house, my favorite topic of all time - check out the entire press conference online for full details). But owner Daniel Snyder was watching the game and, after watching the Bears running game getting blown up, called Gibbs with a playful message: "Don't run it on third and 1."
Vikings Coach Brad Childress would not reveal much about the status of two key injured players - stud corner Antoine Winfield (dude is having a monster season) and receiver Sydney Rice. Childress said both would be assessed in practice this week (big surprise there).
Tried to get Coach Joe going a bit and, going back to the well, let him know that he's never lost in the Metrodome. "Don't start that," he said, then took a few verbal jabs at me in good fun. Didn't turn into Angry Joe by any stretch ... I won't be here Friday - driving the family up to my in-laws near Cooperstown - and my man Jerry Coleman is in Aruba (he's got the life) but if you can convince some other media schlub to ask Coach Joe about his record in Minnesota again on Friday, maybe he'll flip out.
Gibbs said he thought a few players named as Pro Bowl alternates should have been starters or alternates, and was touched that Sean Taylor was voted as a starter posthumously.

Hmmm, I'll take "sack him" for $600, Alex.
Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2007 4:10 PM
I am actually thinking, you want to make sure that if you sack him, stay away from his legs, go for the mid section. Let him jump on every pass as that has to reduce his accuracy by 25%. I am no pro QB, but I know you want to keep the feet on the ground to throw accurate.

Seems like, if a QB is in the air when he throws, he wouldn't be able to get the ball downfield very fast, i.e., without a back foot to plant.
Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2007 4:14 PM
Seems like it also might be a good opportunity to remove his shoes.

Throwing a basketball when your feet are already off the ground, your arms already need to be partially extended and in motion to get any distance on the shot/pass. Seems like keeping a QB in the air would limit his distance too.

F Dr. Z, but he has us at #14 this week and picks us over the Vikes Sunday:
Washington Redskins (7-7)
This has turned into a very tough team, coming back and beating the Bears and then the Giants in a pair of slugfests, after the Sean Taylor tragedy. I sure like them over the Vikings Sunday, even if it is in Minnesota, and then they face Dallas when the Cowboys could be resting people. The playoffs? Why not?

I think everyone is still in denial about the prospect of three more years of Gibbenstein. I mentioned it yesterday, it seems if true, it seems that Snyder is so impressed with a 500 record, that he's willing to bet the farm that they can do the same thing next year as well.

Normally, I would agree with the F Dr. Z meme. [F? meme? out of hand!]. This week, however, he has a point. Five game winning streak phooey!
Week 10, Vikings get shut out 34-0 by the Packers (this is a Packers team who, a month earlier, the Skins held tough with at 17-14).
Week 11, Vikings beat Oakland
Week 12, Vikings beat Giants (who are who we thought they were)
Week 13, Vikings beat Detroit
Week 14, Vikings beat San Francisco
Week 15, Vikings beat Chicago
This winning "streak" (and accompanying speschy speschy from the national media) leads the Vikings to the fabled "trap game". They don't know what's going to hit them.
The Skins current two game streak is built on grit and resilience. This is a TEAM right now.
I'm just sayin'

Posted by: trailblazer658 | December 19, 2007 4:48 PM
The guy coached the Pats for 4 years and the Jets for 3, our two worst enemies (in recent years).
To get an idea of how I feel about this, imagine that Jimmy Johnson decides he'd like one last go as GM of the Redskins? Or better still, Barry Switzer?
Posted by: toddcoat | December 19, 2007 4:52 PM
At a minimum, Gibbs will sign a one-year extension (option) so that he can coach like he's coaching for the future, instead of a farewell tour. Then, at the end of the season, he will retire after fulfilling his original five year contract.

I am confident the Skins will pull out a win this weekend and I don't think it will be that close either.
1. Vikings have no passing game, they rely on the run. The Skins are better against the run than the pass.
2. If Winfield doesn't play, or plays injured with that strained pectoral, Moss could have a field day against them.
3. The Vikes have one of the worst pass D's in the league, Moss and Cooley will be a focal point for the scheme this week. Also, all the plays in the playbook will be utilized with Collins at the helm. And is it me, or does Collins have that Peyton Manning extremely long head and neck syndrome? That's got to be a good omen.
Posted by: ga8085 | December 19, 2007 4:58 PM

"Has anyone been able to shut down their running game? If so how?"
Posted by: alex35332 | December 19, 2007 04:55 PM
I think it happened the first week Peterson was out with an injury, and before Chester Taylor was not into a rhythm ... not sure whether that is a strategy as much as a set of circumstances.
My guess is that their running game cannot be shut down, just outscored. Two solid backs (plus a Pro Bowl fullback) and a road grading line. Just need to make sure that they don't get too many yards after contact. That plus force fumbles.
Anyone notice how hard the Steelers try to strip the ball? For them, the first guy to the ball carrier has to make the tackle. The second guy goes for the ball. The third guy assists on the tackle.
Skins need to force turnovers on D.
Posted by: dcsween | December 19, 2007 5:02 PM
He had like 14 rushes for 3 yds. Taylor picked up the slack, but didn't dominate by any means. They're too one dimensional...
Posted by: ga8085 | December 19, 2007 5:02 PM
The best way to stop their running game is to kneecap the left side of their offensive line.

alex####, the Curly R reports on other people's reports that Peterson is mostly a liability when he breaks it long, but that he has lots of carries for losses and runs east-west plenty. Sounds like an important part of the plan is to contain him on outside to keep him from breaking upfield (like Clinton does). http://curlyr.blogspot.com/2007/12/quick-scouting-report-vikings.html Unfortunately, that was one of the things Rocky did really really well.

ESPN says now they're certain Tuna's coming to Miami. Of course, last night they were certain he was going to Atlanta. I'm not sure even the Tuna knows where he's going.
But if he goes to Miami, he'll turn that sorry franchise around faster than anyone else could do it. Personally, I'd welcome him or Jimmy Johnson at Redskins park.

You ever do any time, doc?

I see you've remodeled the garage. Musta cost you hundreds.
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 19, 2007 6:24 PM
whats up with mix are we gonna see this kid on offense?
Posted by: trailblazer658 | December 19, 2007 6:26 PM
Can I borrow your towel? My car just hit a water buffalo.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 19, 2007 6:29 PM
Collins to Mix thats a combination I would like to see!
Posted by: trailblazer658 | December 19, 2007 6:30 PM
I hope we see Mix *in the mix*. Guffaw. (A pun so obvious deserves to be highlighted.)
If not on offense, I hope we at least see him on steams again this week. Dude can tackle.
How's Thrash's ankle?

I think everyone is still in denial about the prospect of three more years of Gibbenstein. I mentioned it yesterday, it seems if true, it seems that Snyder is so impressed with a 500 record, that he's willing to bet the farm that they can do the same thing next year as well.
Posted by: ga8085 | December 19, 2007 04:42 PM
Speak for yourself. I personally feel that anyone who would make the above comments simply has no understanding of history, doesn't understand the meaning of the word loyalty, and isn't the type of fan the team needs.
Posted by: Barno1 | December 19, 2007 6:39 PM
Toddcoat, I think you should be happy about Tunaball coming to South Florida. He knows how to build a winner. And, as everyone knows, I adore Cleolemon; Tuna is good with the young QBs. Even tho it would be a front-office job, I'd think Cleolemon would benefit.
Posted by: TheCindy | December 19, 2007 6:44 PM
There are a lot more shut down corners in the NFL than there are good head coaches.
I expected more from Gibbs by this point in time, and he's made some mistakes, but honestly, how many head coaches are there that are better than Gibbs? Of those, how many would you offer the job to? Of who's left, who do you think would take the job?
There are plenty of Norv Turners out there. Great guy, just don't want him to be head coach.

I dunno, Barno, the problem I have with ga8085 is not his opinion (with which I disagree) but the selective reading he apparently did before posting that deliberately, though mildly, provocative comment.
First off, that Gibbs item is just a rumor.
After it was posted, some of us said we were 'fer it' and some said they were 'agin' it'. A response roughly identical to every other issue that has come up up here.
This notion of "denial" ga8085 cites... that's what sticks in my craw. I'm fully aware it would be "risky" to keep Gibbs around, but my stance is that keeping him around is less "risky" than having anyone else take over.

Look at Cindy with the boosterism!
(Psst! Maybe dial it back a bit. If we lay it on too thick 'coat might figure out that we're just trying to make him feel better about his Fins. Did you see the overwrought bathos up here after they got their first win?)
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 19, 2007 6:55 PM
I enjoy the Tuna. Pro fubball is a more interesting place with him in it.
Posted by: TheCindy | December 19, 2007 7:02 PM
"Bathos," Nate?
Are those the little round soaps that smell like oats?
Posted by: freakzilla | December 19, 2007 7:04 PM
Stupid question #57:
How did the Tuna get his name?
Posted by: _Stumped_ | December 19, 2007 7:04 PM
Regarding Sir Anthony Mix-a-Lot, I e-mailed sports journalist Jason LaCanfora of the Washington Post, and he replied:
"With yoder hurting I doubt 6 receivers are up so my guess is no on mix"
He also said Thrash played last week and is fine. Guess I just didn't see him last week.

Any relation, I wonder?
Awfully pleased to encounter the unusual names Horatio (the H in H.B. Blades) and Hezikiah (Tom Mix's original middle name) on the same day. For some reason both of those were nixed from our baby name list.

Listen up here you old coot, my sense of history spans basically from 1994 Skins, in which I started following them. Therefore, I have no allegiance to the Hogs, the Smurfs, or whatever other historical moments that your old and withered mind can conjure up. I still would like to see Grilliams take over if not next year than the following year. My opinion on that has not and will not channge. Loyalty? I wasn't there for "the good old days" only for countless losing seasons. Yet I still root for them every week. So put that in your geratol and swallow it.
Nate
That selective reading came from the Washington Times and Fox Sports if I remember correctly not the National Enquirer. Next time I'll be sure to call Wilbon to make sure it's the "real deal" before posting it here.

How we doin' Cindy?
Ultoddimatodd-wise, I mean.
I miss MV Dame.
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 19, 2007 7:18 PM
And the denial comment was just sarcasm.
Posted by: ga8085 | December 19, 2007 7:18 PM
ga8085,
Comments on Saunders?
I'm pretty sure in a Gibbs-less world, either Saunders or Williams would go.
Posted by: _Stumped_ | December 19, 2007 7:21 PM
I gotcha, ga. We're all entitled to opinions and opinions on opinions and like such as.
And I'm not even sure who's tweaking whom most of the time up here. Just hard to tell. Was I being serious with Barno and razzing you? Or was I being flippant with both of you? Or was I on the level with both of you but goofin' on myself? Yeah, that's it.
Okay, so anyway, you are on record as saying you are not in favor of Joe Gibbs getting a contract extension. Check.
Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 19, 2007 7:21 PM
Stumped
In an ideal world, if Gibbs goes Grilliams takes over and Saunders stays aboard with full control of the offense.
Posted by: ga8085 | December 19, 2007 7:27 PM
I don't see Coach Gibbs getting a contract extension offered at the conclusion of this season either. If by great graces we do in fact make the playoffs, the topis will be brought up at the conclusion of whatever the post season affords us. I personally believe that Coach Gibbs may simply say "no thanks" to the Daniel and put this second coming away. I also believe that Russ Grimm and Bill Cower's names will be thrown into the mix along with others.
Posted by: johnt424 | December 19, 2007 7:36 PM
ga,
Yes, in an ideal world. I'm just betting that if you promote Williams, Saunders may not stay for more than, say a year, before he's tapped for a head coach position somewhere else (hence there is value in having Joe the figurehead).
I think it would be great if Gibbs were promoted to GM that might be the best possible outcome.
I'm just wondering if folks like yourself would be so anxious to show Gibbs the door, without the storybook ending "and they all lived happily ever after."
Posted by: _Stumped_ | December 19, 2007 7:37 PM
stumped
Saunders is in his sixties, we all know older assistant coaches don't usually get promoted to head coaches and whose to say he even wants to be a head coach somewhere else? I wouldn't mind seeing Gibbs in the front office, his qualities would be much appreciated in that aspect. I just don't want to see another year of what we've seen this year as far as conservo playcalling, ineptitude, and blown leads. I don't think I could handle it...
Posted by: ga8085 | December 19, 2007 7:51 PM
Know what would be funny?
A Week-17 FedEx Field full of fans holding up posters of Jessica Simpson in her Daisy Duke outfit.
Posted by: freakzilla | December 19, 2007 7:53 PM
I just heard on the NFL network that escalators in Larry Fitzgerald's contract will kick in next season raising his salary to more than $14 million for the season. It sure would be nice to get ahold of him if the Cardinals can't rework his deal and let him go. I, personally, like Anquan Boldin's style of play better because he's so physical. But, he's still a beast in his own right.
Posted by: JustMe | December 19, 2007 7:55 PM
ga,
I know what you mean about the play calling. But it seems from what we've seen that that's all on Saunders, given how he's opened things up with Todd.
The mistakes on the sidelines do make me wonder about Gibbs.
zilla,
maybe all the fans should dress up like Daisy Duke.

Old? No, not yet my friend.
Now you listen to me you little pip-squeak, I have no problems with younger fans. None. Or even older fans, who didn't become fans until after the Gibbs I era. Maybe that's you.
But what I do have a problem with--what I absolulte, positively, abhor--is fans who publicly diss Joe Jackson Gibbs in any way, shape, or form. It's disgraceful.
An opinion is one thing. But to publicly call for any man's firing--any man--you better have damn good reasons. I mean DAMN good. And when that someone is a person who has risen so high to the very top of his profession and set a new standard for excellence that will probably, realistically, never happen again here...to call for that very man's firing in such a time is simply disgraceful.
I'm just calling it as I see it. Some Redskins fans are simply disgraceful.
The man has tenure in this town for Christ's sake. He has earned a lifetime pass to coach this team. Lifetime! And when you little pip squeaks who don't know jack shEEt about appreciation of greatness, nor have any clue really what this man has done for this team and this town. We as residents of this area and fans of this team do not have any God given entitlement to having winning teams year after year.
Don't forget that.
