Omar Stoutmire Coming Back

According to league sources, the oft-signed-and-released safety has agreed to terms and is on his way back. The Skins have some ailing safeties, with Vernon Fox and Pierson Prioleau nicked in the Giants game they need reinforcements.

I imagine this is why they were willing to let CB John Eubanks walk.

Been getting a lot of emails about the Skins alleged cap hell situation in 2008 - trust me, they'll be fine - so I'll post on that on Thursday. Also, got the webchat on washingtonpost.com at 1 as always.

Barney
Pip Squeak? LOL, yes sir grandpa! I haven't heard that word since watching classic eighties high school movies. Tenure? What the hell do I care about tenure? I just want the Skins to win, I don't care whose at the helm to do it. And where in my post did you read that I was demanding he get fired? I'm against him getting a contract extension for up to this point a 500 record. And where were you old chivalrous one, when this team was losing game after game and over half the people on here were calling for his head? And I could really care less what you personally have problems with in regard to other peoples opinions. Any don't YOU forget this is the NFL, and without the fans there would be no Skins and Gibbs would of never got the opportunity he did.

And just because you keep the Burger King restrooms sparkling clean day after day, it doesn't mean your job is guaranteed for life, right? He's got a job just like every other American out there, and no matter how good you WERE at your job, doesn't mean your entitled to keep it if you don't keep producing. That's life...Old man.

Orville Redenbacher isn't a real person? F my childhood memories.

Posted by: Dorf | December 19, 2007 9:34 PM

Nate, I think "agreed to terms" means that Omar wanted to be called "Exclusive Defensive Back Reliever," but the team wanted to call him "Pre-Approved Seasonal Consultant."

Posted by: michael_b_clegg | December 19, 2007 10:33 PM

I'm really not interested in following the trial, either. No matter what happens, it won't bring Sean back, and even if I follow every iota of the trial, it won't change the verdict or the sentence. A bright light was snuffed out and stolen from millions of people. That's plenty for me to be sad, angry, even hopeful about, right there.

Not sure what the vet min is but guess its around 800k. So he'll pocket about 100 if he sticks for 2 weeks. Not bad for 120 minutes of work and some practice time.

Skins are getting no respect once again by the books. 6.5 point dogs for the second consecutive Sunday night. Same result I hope. F NYG and NO.

I'm getting this feeling that the Skins are coming together as a TEAM since Sean death. I really believe that they will win the last two games.

Posted by: cmecyclist | December 20, 2007 3:17 AM

When I'm playing Madden and my star playmaker gets a season ending injury, I just press reset. It is really encouraging to see this team rally. I especially see it in Smoot and Landry. I liked the "suicide mission" story. I really hope Smoot fights his guts out in Minnesota. Last tie he was there it was the "love boat," this time it will be the Boat of Pain.

I believe in two more!

Posted by: Zebraskins | December 20, 2007 8:12 AM

After one heck of a lot of soul-searching, I have to write this publicly. Joe Gibbs, I apologize.

I have been loudly critical about Gibbs 2.0. I've asked, begged, screamed and prayed for a new coach since last year. From poor clock management to sticking with shaky veterans to questionable signings and play-calling, it just seemd to get worse rather than better.

But what happened at Giants Stadium last Sunday was nothing short of awe-inspiring. And it has nothing to do with playoff chances. I figured this would be their Little Bighorn; get slaughtered in about 20 minutes and season over. They had almost no reason to play well or to be expected to. Especially the way they've played in New Yorok in the past.

A funny thing happened on their way to oblivion, though. The Washington Redskins found themselves amid the ashes of their season. They were our Rocky Balboa. Long odds, almost zero chance. But what they had that we all missed was heart. And that starts with the coach. For all his foibles in 2.0, he erased them all with the heart he and his team showed in one blustery night in the New Jersey swamps.

His bust is once more shining brightly in Canton. Forgive me coach. Win or lose this week, stay and coach as long as you want. You earned it in way no one should ever have to.

Posted by: Soups1 | December 20, 2007 8:43 AM

Amen, Soups and cmecyclist.

On paper, this team has so much less strength than at the beginning of the season.

But when it comes to heart, guts, and fight, this team is so strong. It staggered, it got knocked to the canvas. It struggled to get up against Buffalo. It got its legs back against Chicago. It got its wind back against New York. And now Minny had better look the F out.

"Dear Santa,
My Daddy says that if you were real, you'll bring the Resdskins the ability to seriously beat down the Vikings and Cowgirls as a Christmas present. I believe you are real, but I'm not sure if being involved in NFL games is what you're about. Could you please let me know?

Dear Virginia,
Yes, Santa is real. In fact, he nearly lost his home at the North Pole trying to beat the spread on Redskins games this season, and he was getting creamed by starting Campbell on his fantasy team. Santa so much likes the Skins, that his outfit is burgundy and gold (not that red nonsense you see on the fake guy at the mall). Santa would like nothing better than to see the Skins win out, but he's no miracle worker (that's the boss's area of expertise). Santa will do his best (Vikes and Girls are getting nothing but coal) but it's up to the coaches to figure out how to deal with the Vikes 8-in-the-box plan to stymie the running game. Santa wants Collins to play out of his mind again, and that should be very helpful. And please tell your Dad that using God's name like that when he watches Skins games is counterproductive.

Merry Christmas to all and to all, Hail.

Larry Fitzgerald WOULD be expensive, but after he gets cut, the meter gets reset, so pay no attention to the current salary number. It seems like it could be a value choice though -- where they get what you pay for (i.e., more like London Fletcher than, say, another big money WR from SF or the safety from St.Lou).

I may have Morris Danced at some point in my past, but I'd prefer to draw a veil of discretion over that period of my life.

Seriously though, the dancers traditionally dance IN PUB GARDENS. It's really just an excuse to go on an elaborate pub crawl... "I'm just going dancing with the lads dear, I'll be back later. No, don't wait up for me, you know how long these dances go on".

It's right up there with going Wassailing, how many 'historic/traditional' excuses to go drinking can you come up with? :-)

And thanks Cindy for your boosting on the Fins yesterday. If it has to be the Big Fat Tuna to help us get going again, then so be it. I just hope we don't lose Cam.

Bunch of fair weather bandwaggoning j-holes.....fun to listen to WIP right after they lose......I can't stand when people call them the greatest fans in the world.....let's talk sellouts and we have a clear cut greatest fans in the world winner.

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 10:55 AM

Parcells and Cameron are old friends jspace, I would be astounded if he is gone.

The other thing this means is that Huizenga will not sell out majority control, he had to assure Parcells of that before he would sign (which he hasn't yet as far as I know).

Posted by: toddcoat | December 20, 2007 10:58 AM

Dolphins should see if they can strike a deal for B.Quinn. Maybe now that the Browns have Anderson, they might be able to get Quinn for 75 cents on the dollar.

I wonder how Parcells will feel about buying ingredients for another chef?

I can see him pulling a Pat Riley, building a championship caliber team, then canning the coach and taking over...oops, I mean taking over so Cam can spend more time with his family.

i'm posing a sincere question here; in the situation the skins are in right now, with two games left and the season on the line, who would you rather have playing for us, portis or bailey? my vote still goes to portis.

Posted by: psps23 | December 20, 2007 11:00 AM

I would be shocked in Cle trades Quinn. A no 1 draft pick will cost a ton in return and if they put him on the block, there are a lot of teams that will be going after Quinn, I would expect Mia, Atl, Chi, Det, Min, Bal, to be on the QB market.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 20, 2007 11:14 AM

I always will call the Portis move the right move, the only thing I think you can question is the draft pick we gave up. Maybe a 4th round pick would have been more suitable.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 20, 2007 11:16 AM

We'd be looking at a much different Clinton Portis with Randy Thomas and John Jansen together. I'm still pleased as punch with the Champ/Portis trade.

toddcoat, from what I've read, they are only acquaintences through Bob Knight.

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 11:19 AM

O)n the Portis vs Bailey trade, so we dont have to rehash it every 6 months.

Bailey wanted out.

Luckily we got something in return.

Granted it should have been straight up or a draft pick from Denver, but they knew they had us by the short hairs.

We got a back who is explosive and a playmaker. He has the all time rushing mark for our franchise and single handedly (with the olines help) got us to the playoffs despite Brunell in 05.

Once again, not the greatest trade, but at least we did not get 3 minor leaguers, a pitching prospect and cash ;)

Posted by: Zebraskins | December 20, 2007 11:20 AM

dlhaze,

I don't think Bailey is the reason the Broncos arn't going to the playoffs. They can't stop the run, and thats not his fault! I still like Portis though, he is a warrior!

Posted by: redryan400 | December 20, 2007 11:20 AM

Cleveland appears to have a Drew Brees/Phillip Rivers situation shaping up. My money goes on Anderson being the one that goes.

Do you think they should keep him just because of what they gave up to get him? He could bring in some picks that could turn into valuable assets on defense. I'm not a big fan of the sentiment "because you made an investment in the past, you HAVE to see if the investment pans out." San Diego was in a similar position, and while Rivers is OK, i'm sure they'd much rather have kept Brees and dealt Rivers away if it happened all over again.

Posted by: psps23 | December 20, 2007 11:20 AM

Skins flying way under the radar. Mike and Mike broke down the SB chances of all teams still alive for the playoffs and didn't even mention the skins this morning.

I think Parcells' goal is to eventually coach every team in the AFC East.

Posted by: mtnskinsfan | December 20, 2007 11:21 AM

I wonder if Mike and Mike ever had a fight over whose name would go first in the title.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 20, 2007 11:25 AM

"Would you rather have a guy who scores points for a team or one who saves them?" If the team is struggling to score points in general the answer is easy. It's a BS debate either way to my mind.

Portis is a useful back, perhaps not 'elite' but then there aren't many who are, and they often off their perch pretty quickly anyway.

Bailey has been a shutdown corner, and possibly will be again. Denver has had a winning record for years and this year's 'failure' could be that they only end up 8-8. Denver's whole defense has been bad this year, Champ has gone with it.

It's been a real down year for the 'strong, defense-led' teams in general I think, look at the Ravens and Steelers. Even the Jaguars have had plenty scored on them by the teams with potent offenses.

All things being equal though I'd probably rather have the Corner, because a running back needs an o-line to make him valuable, a corner can usually do it on their own (see Green Bay's corners).

And I'll go on record on this for anyone who cares. NO WAY Miami takes Quinn, he's not worth anything. If we go after any QB it would be Anderson who I think will be a FA, not Quinn.

Posted by: toddcoat | December 20, 2007 11:25 AM

Thats because Mike and Mike are Dallas guys.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 20, 2007 11:30 AM

Amen Toddcoat. I'd rather have Champ. And as you said a RB needs a OLine.

Posted by: 5-11 | December 20, 2007 11:30 AM

I dont see Cleveland getting rid of either. They are not in tight cap constraints, you NEED two QB's to win in this league (what, one starting QB made it through the whole year last year?).

And Anderson may be a one year wonder. But it goes to show how good a QB can be given time and an running game.

Posted by: Zebraskins | December 20, 2007 11:31 AM

Also I think Cle. will hold onto Quinn for next year because they will want to see if Anderson is more than a one year wonder. Remember when they thought they were set with two QB's a few years back.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 20, 2007 11:32 AM

toddcoat - a running back can win you a game. a corner can only really help you not lose it.

Posted by: psps23 | December 20, 2007 11:32 AM

A RB needs an O-line IF he doesn't have a flying unicorn.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 20, 2007 11:33 AM

Toddcoat got it. Anderson is a free agent. BUT, the Browns should LEARN from the Brees/Rivers experiment, and re-sign Anderson. The difference btwn the Browns/Chargers circumstances was that Brees was no where near as exciting in SD as he has been in NO (plus the bad leg).

I agree with the suggestion that the Browns should trade for the back up QB spot. Quinn might make some team a fine QB one day, but he should get into whatever that system is ASAP to get onto the learning curve. If I were the Browns, I'd want to trade for a servicable backup QB, plus a replacement starter at a position of need (e.g., good solid player approaching retirement), like Ted Washington (I THINK that is the name of their nose tackle).

So if Phil Savage calls one of you guys by mistake (b/c he would be meaning to call me), tell him Quinn plus a late round pikc (5th? 6th?) for Rosenfels and their starting nose guard. Oh, also tell him to call the Texans.

Posted by: dcsween | December 20, 2007 11:33 AM

mtnskins...did you call in the mike and the maddog show yesturday? if it was you nice take.......don't want to come across as the resident portis hater cause i really like cp, just don't think he is all that special ....my guess is our running game wouldn't look a whole lot different if betts or some other back were get the carries....but can you imagine a defense with springs, smoooooot and bailey at the corners...no contest,I think thats a fair and totally unbiased opinion on that hypothetical....bailey is a dominat shutdown game changing player, clinton is solid back, but a level below elite.

Posted by: Oldschool | December 20, 2007 11:34 AM

"And Anderson may be a one year wonder. But it goes to show how good a QB can be given time and an running game."

Posted by: Zebraskins | December 20, 2007 11:31 AM

Anderson is legit, but you got the bit right about time. The Browns offensive line is the reason they are in the hunt (not Jamal Lewis).

Posted by: dcsween | December 20, 2007 11:36 AM

can anyone tell me how you would have kept Champ here?

Posted by: alex35332 | December 20, 2007 11:38 AM

Ok, but if they hold on to Quinn and Anderson turns out to be more than a one year wonder, then you start to have a real dilemma. Every year you hold on to Quinn without playing him, he loses value. So if Anderson is the real deal, you've basically just wasted a 1st rounder on Quinn. And if you trade Anderson away at that point and Quinn doesn't pan out, then you just look like an idiot. So I think there's a serious argument both ways. I personally would go with the "safer" bet and keep Anderson (who you know already has a good repoire with the two young offensive stars; Edwards and Winslow), and trade Quinn while he still has value for you.

Posted by: dcsween | December 20, 2007 11:42 AM

I don't think Quinn's value is going to go down in a single year. I think if Anderson's contract is up next season then you decide then on who to make your starter.

One of my main reasons for advocating the portis for bailey trade was that bailey was gone anyway, and getting portis was a great bonus. I was just advocating my opinion that in our current situation, even if I could swap portis for bailey, I wouldn't do it (for this season). To me, Portis will be more valuable down this stretch than Bailey would be.

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 11:51 AM

psps, totally. The Browns should call the Quinn move what it was -- unnecessary. As a Clevelander, I know the Browns fans are loving Anderson. They loved Quinn for a little while after the draft (mostly b/c he was saying he used to love the Browns as a kid), even for a while after he got whiny. The jibba jabba up here about Eagles & Giants fans being fairweather fans does not apply to Browns fans. Browns fans love their Browns, win or lose, and they really love underdogs who step up. They are loving them some Derek Anderson about now. The counter to that is that they distrust the famed and fabled, esp. before its earned. They got burned on Kellen Jr. (and PISSED after missing the SECOND season with the motorcycle (ATV?) accident), but are with him now that he's performing. Btwn Anderson, Edwards, Kellen Jr., and Jurevicious (sp?), plus the kicker (Dawson?) and league leading KR (better than Hester) Josh Cribbs, Browns fans are grateful and happy for their MANY YEARS of devotion with no success.

No one would shed a tear if the Brown's FO realized the return on the investment in Quinn (who was a value where he got picked late in the round as it was), and turned it into a roster building exercise.

Posted by: dcsween | December 20, 2007 11:51 AM

clinton is solid back, but a level below elite.

I won't disagree that CP is a step below the elite level when viewed strictly from the perspective of running the ball, but that's not the only responsibility that a running back has. I would rather have a dependable, workhorse back like Portis who will flat lay out a defender on a block, than a guy who's just a flashy runner.

In other words, I'd rather have a guy who's just very good across the board, rather than great in one area but average in another.

Posted by: freakzilla | December 20, 2007 11:55 AM

Anderson is RFA after THIS season. Would seem like a BETTER idea to lock him up and avoid the QB "controvery" by dealing Quinn. The more I think about Quinn for Rosenfels, the more it makes sense (if I do say so myself ... which I did). As it is, the Texans have a QB controversy coming up b/c Schaub didn't live up to (overinflated) expectations and is getting paid more than Rosenfels, who exceeded expectations. Swap those #2 QBs and the controversy on each team is delayed a year, the new #2 develops in the new system, and if either #1 performs worse than expected in year 2, then let the controversy begin, no crying.

Posted by: dcsween | December 20, 2007 11:58 AM

This is all moot guys, the trade got made and everyone (well, almost everyone) moved on.

Miami are at least $20M under next year's cap and will probably be way more after season's end (about 6 weeks ago really). If they thought Anderson was worth it, they'd get him. The one interesting thing for me about Parcell's with the Dolphins is could he find us another Romo?

CleoLemon will never be more than a career backup, you really don't want him to be starting. Beck may or may not have what it takes, but irregardless (I know that's not really a word) he needs more time to learn the game. So, we need a QB to keep us going while we create the QB of the future. Maybe the Tuna can help us with that.

Posted by: toddcoat | December 20, 2007 12:00 PM

I also like Portis as a blocking back, not just because he hits them hard, but he seems to love it. On his show players club, he and El were arguing about who has pancaked more defenders this season, they ended up making a bet to who will have the most by the end of the year.

Portis is also an okay option as a receiver. Though so is Betts in that regard.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 20, 2007 12:00 PM

thank you freakzilla. he's not the home run hitter anymore, and nowhere near as shifty as westbrook or tomlinson, but he does so much more for this team than most realize. there's just something about watching the smallest guy on the field (almost) absolutely lay out guys twice his size.

Posted by: psps23 | December 20, 2007 12:02 PM

DL you are my favorite dude of all time. NO ONE inthe world is more fair weather than a Philly fan. Any sporting event you go to, when that team gets blown out, they start an eagles chant. now that the eagles are bad they go with whatever team has one good moment in the city, It's pathetic. There is NOTHING better than listening to WIP after a loss. After a loss everyone sucks, this team has no talent, they are going no where. After a win they are the best team in the NFC, no one can stop them, the D is amazing.

When the Philies lost int he playoffs this year you no longer saw the phillies hats. When the Iggles proved they suck you no longer saw any Iggles hats. The hat is whatever flavor of the week the city has going. After they beat Dallas by 4 points when Dallas played the worst they could of and the Eagles played the best they could have, now all you see is eagles hats. It makes me want to vomit. After the skins lost by 500 to the pats i rocked my skins hat harder than ever just so i would never be one of those people.

Posted by: sams3 | December 20, 2007 12:03 PM

He's a great blocking back. And I think a fair bit of the blame for his lackluster numbers this year can be put on the JJ injury. Am I the only one who thinks this is an 11 win team had Jansen not gone out?

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 12:04 PM

Isn't Greenberg from Connecticut?

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 12:06 PM

JJ and Randy T. Portis would be a certain pro bowler if they were playing this year.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 20, 2007 12:08 PM

its the pancake breakfast. we do it every month.

Posted by: psps23 | December 20, 2007 12:10 PM

A big question is whether this team can maintain the level of play from the past two weeks. The passion, mostly. Or will there be a letdown. I sure hope they can keep it going. Would LOVE to see them go up there and punch those uppity Vikings in the mouth. Every swingin' soul, including the ones who were very recently swingin' on the unemployment line.

But we all know it sometimes takes a little extra something to get the team riled up.
So, will J-Reid or this Tenorio fellow step up and put a bee in Joe's bonnet at the Friday presser?

HAIL.

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 20, 2007 12:11 PM

Of the O-line, dating back to when Dockery was here, I always thought that Jansen was the weakest link. I don't deny that they guy has a huge heart and is "core" Skins (the longest tenure on the roster after the Red Snapper, right? more than Albright?), but he has had some consistency issues that were highlighted by Wade's breakout game in New Orleans.

Turns out, the weakest link has since been pinpointed further to be the connective tissue in Jansen's ankle.

Posted by: dcsween | December 20, 2007 12:11 PM

Skins should do a pancake breakfast, after each game. You get one in the game get one for breakfast.

Posted by: alex35332 | December 20, 2007 12:12 PM

JJ and Randy T. Portis would be a certain pro bowler if they were playing this year.

Posted by: psps23 | December 20, 2007 12:07 PM

It seems obvious to me. Which is why I don't get the anti-CP sentiments. With the JJ/RT kingpin back in the offense next year, they're going to be nasty. ANd I understand you have to stop making excuses at some point, but you have to admit, the Gibbs luck has been pretty poor. He's due for a break (read: no more *bad* breaks).

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 12:13 PM

Posted by: NateinthePDX | December 20, 2007 12:11 PM

Yes, Cindy or someone needs to draft up the question for a direct feed at the presser, e.g., "Coach, were you aware that you have NEVER lost in Minnesota? Do you feel extra pressure to win because of that?"

[I think something similar evoked the soul swinging presser before the Lions game.] Looks like Jasno tried this week, but might have fired prematurely.

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 12:30 PM

I am with dcsween on this one. I don't see much of a difference between Janson and Wade. Losing Randy Thomas was huge though. He's one of the best in the league.

That said, no one without a star on their helmet is a guaranteed pro-bowler as long as fans can vote.

Sad but true.

Posted by: Original_etrod | December 20, 2007 12:40 PM

Posted by: 4-12 | December 20, 2007 12:42 PM

The difference between Janson and Wade is Janson is good.

Last year he blew people up off the line. Wade may be a SLIGHTLY better pass protector but in the run game it's not close. Wade looks like he is wearing roller skates.

Posted by: sams3 | December 20, 2007 12:46 PM

I'll take Jansen blocking for Portis and Betts 10 times out of 10 out of those two. He's fierce. (thanks to LD for that one.)

I'm on a bacon sabbatical. Things had really gotten out of hand.

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 12:49 PM

i'd love to see heyer step up and replace jansen one day.

i remember how inept he was in the preseason. couldn't hit his bum with both hands. seems like he's been really getting better. from miserable to serviceable. i think the next step in that chain would be "pretty ok."

sadly, i think jansen's best days are past. seems like the hogs back in the day played FOREVER. until they were all like 38 or 39, still drinking beer, wearing camo, and flattening guys.

also, i know jasno mentioned it in a post earlier in the week, but what are the chances we see some #79 jerseys hit the shelves?

we are not an 11 or so win team because we simply don't make enough plays offensively and (this year at least) our young franchise qb was a turnover machine....we simply didn't have enough offensive firepower to overcome that....million other factors clock management, some of the gameday decisions etc....but our play makers didn't make enough to overcome our own mistakes....its an offensive league dominated by the few guys that make big plays on a consistent basis...you only need a couple , and the ones we have mostly come up short durring thier time here....if we make the playoffs this season it will be because 1. the qb protects the ball and gets it to his playmakers and 2 his playmakers moss, Portis and cooley make clutch big game changing plays....The defenase has been and will be fine....mark it down.

Posted by: jspaceman72 | December 20, 2007 1:16 PM

I agree, Oldschool, except that I'd put a little more emphasis on 2nd-half play calling in most of our losses.

But I have a lot of confidence in Todd's ability to put the ball where it needs to be over the next two weeks, which will help our playmakers to make plays. As for the defense, agreed, I'm not worried. I'll admit being a little frustrated in the heat of the moment sometimes at the bend-don't-break scheme of our D, but when they pretty consistently deny big plays and hold other teams to FGs, it takes away any bad taste.

In a world of highlight clips, it's easy to forget that winning (and losing) is very much incremental, and that doing a lot of little things right typically results in wins.
